Ok wth. My 4k is tripping.. or my tv is. Seems like every time hdr content tries to play it starts flickering and popping then just going to static snow and staying there. I have hdr off and match content. Any help?

the option could be triggered via CC if the user wishes, but as far as 'saving' the OS from corruption, it's not as critical as iOS/iPadOS imho

when connect 4K with dcsd+goldeneye to palera1n in normal mode (this can only be done when jailbroken already because USB), the process is very jank

the enter recovery will enter DFU, but then because auto-boot is false device goes into recovery while jailbreaking

Then restart palera1n and the process can go on as expected

Going over some of this, I suspect that UART works similarly to UART over Lightning on other devices (which requires an appropriate adapter). But it might be disabled and require demoting. And it sounds like the debug connector may have had JTAG on non-production HomePods, but components for that have been removed

Anyway, wish there was an audioOS/HomePod channel, hard to find the prior work done on this already

I am attempting to JB ATV 4k w/ GE/DCSC as I had years ago, this time using tvOS 17.4 (willing to go to 17.5 if that's also still a go)-

Config:
- ATV 4k (A1842) tvOS 17.4
- palera1n-macos-x86_64 (Current- 428) directly from https://cdn.nickchan.lol/palera1n/c-rewrite/artifacts/main/428/
- Host MacBook Pro (intel)

Steps

Connected DCSC&GE to MacBook to force DFU (confirmed fast flash)
Removed DCSC cable from Mac & GE, replaced with USB-A to Lightening cable (both are Apple official (USB cable, and USB-C to USB-A adapter)
Launch palera1n— ./palera1n-macos-x86_64 -f --cli
- Doesn’t see ATV after waiting reasonable time, ctrl-c the app
- Reverse alignment of Lightning cable at GE interface
Again Launch palera1n— ./palera1n-macos-x86_64 -f --cli
- This time it PARTIALLY works/fails per below (I think due to “unsupported target OS version”?

Questions:

Any reason NOT to update the ATV to 17.5 (current), and then JB as don’t want to deal with this again on this one for a while (I actually a total 3 ATV if I can get through this one).
Why is second half of install not completing on ATV (likely based on msg about catalog).
Had expected to have two override check for tvOS version (see unsupported)
USING CLI given comments about lack of current viability in t-gui.

This is an issue with checkm8 on I/O not detecting the steps, happens on HD too
is this a question?

I wouldn't recommend anyone attempt to jailbreak the 4K until the HD version is 100%... this being the case of accidental OS corruption which may lead to bootlooping

My questions (sorry if I wasn't clear were around the following issues).

1- Is there possibly a settting I was missing on the comand line arg for palra1n to ignore/bypass the version of tvOS when setting up as I have 17.4 which is not OFFICIALLY supported (at least in the MAIN of pailra1n)

2- What does the errorr msg I recieved mean? (you are correct that this one is more trroubleshooting)-- collection_remove: WARNING: element 0x7f7f50c05f50 not present in collection 0x10adba970 (cap 8)

3- Any reeason to stay on tvOS 17.4 vs 17.5 (other than the everr present statment stay loow of course). Reason being rather only do this once for this device and lock it down as I did in the past.

No. The command-line args are fine, it's not what you typed in, it's the constant connection/disconnection that palera1n initiates during the checkm8 process.. especially during the pongoOS boot. I had to restart the script several times just to get pongoOS to pick up the device in its state.
That is a kernel element that the patch finder collects to allow codesigning.
Unless apps nag for an update, I see zero reason to add more security to a 4K. It's already difficult enough Apple has killed the native USB port that we have to go on the internet to find a specific knock-off cable that Apple internal uses to flash the device.. Can only imagine what magic Apple is keeping inside these updates to kill jailbreaking further...

Got you. (confirming your commeent likly an interraction on the iboot process). The palera1n app does indeed show no boot args when I launch it on the ATV. Perhaps nuking it and trying again would help (tryying repeatedly 2 time so far- back the DFU dosen't seem to help). But don't want to wastee your time here on a config you are telling me is likely still problematic even with posts here to get things working. 👍
Yeah I did have a number of apps (and Apple Dev app) that were pushing me to update which is why I uped one of my ATV 4k's to 17.4 so thought that 17.4 vs 17.5 shouldn't be as material given vector of Checkm8t but it's been years sincee I was deep in the internals so will defer to others with more contemporary knowlege like yourself

I love that folks think "oh, just another update.. what could go wrong?" then after OTA-ing.. they find themselves stuck in a hole because of compatibility issues, then they turn to Reddit or Discord for help.. especially on how to downgrade. It's just sad really, They need to stop enforcing unwanted updates. ESPECIALLY when you buy new hardware like headphones for example. You shouldn't have to update to use something like that.

I just love how one little thing leads to a chain of events to lock-down. Kind of like someone coming in to a bank and accidentally giving the teller a fake ID.. then the alarms go off, sirens and bars lower on the window. I do understand this is a security breach but at the same time, third-party organizations are already locked down as is.. There's no real need to get this cynical over a movement to freedom.

Though some trial and error (most with I can log and hopefully reproduce for anyone looking to move this forward)...

I managed to get Palera1n installed & (perhaps) JB…
Installed purePKG (no icon & no top shelf image if that matters)
Unfortunately I miss-entered the repo URL and now have a bad/malformed repo that I can’t remove (using the UI reemove). Lets me select and delete but reeepoo isn't ACTUALLY removed. It SEEMS like this bad repo (dropped the https:// (from https://zenzeq.github.io/tv/). I was able to add it correctly but seems the INCORRECT entry is actually stoping me from installing TrollHelper even though I can find it in the repo and TRY to install.

I assume if I could ssh in I could nuke the repo list (or manually remove). Ironically had somewhat similar issue if I recall YEARS ago when I needed to kill a repo from Nito that I couldn't purge via ui.

Any thoughts? Really don't want to try removing the JB in hoops that reinstalling would wipe the files and allow me back in as might not get its reinstalled 😉

Yes… and no…

As I have done in the past, yes I did swap it out…. That led to the failure scenario I initially mentioned…

As part of many tests it tried once WITHOUT swapping and got further (to the point where I am now)…. Not yet to the point of recommending that yet

Bummer. I have a 4K 1st gen and decided to move off tvOS 13.4.5. Most apps weren’t compatible so updated to 17.5. Took a few ^C with Palera1n but got it work. Always kept the GE/DCSD cables plugged in. BTW Go Giants!

is there any particular reason that when jailbreaking with checkra1n on 13.4.8 on an aTV4, the home screen will just become inaccessible at random? i can still use the app switcher and everything else works fine, it's just that the home screen becomes a blurry nothingness

...and based on the discussion i'm seeing, should i consider updating to 17.5 while it's still signed? (if it's jailbreakable on that fw anyhow)

I picked up my GE and DCSD on eBay. I have 1st gen 4Ks on 14.2, 14.4 and 17.5 and was able to successfully jailbreak. Used checkra1n on 14.x and Palera1n for 17.5. Palera1n took a few attempts but was able to eventually jailbreak.

Ok in the interests of helping others (who take the time to search comments here).

Yes, GE/DCSC work to JB ATV 4k gen 1 using palera1n (as of palera1n, Intel- build 428).

The trick is NOT to disconnect the DCSC cable from the GE adapter as one would have done with previous generation of Palera1n.

Yes, said combination does indeed work with tvOS 17.5.1

Someone needed to test, so I took the chance so we know for sure.
Also my other 2 ATV 4k gen 1’s are on 15.1-15.5, and only way I can get my Giants baseball on NBCsports BA (or any of Apple's BB coverage) is by updating to at least tvOS 17... Plus with WWDC around the corner, helpful not having to work around Apple's restrictions for OS version on the Developer app... Thus the other 2 will EVENTUALLY update after I review their current settings and note current tweaks & repos- knowing of course most won’t work on 17 but that will be a education experience in the future when I have time to catch up on current state of which repos are useful/stable, tweaks, and package Managers.

Seems QUITE a lot has changed in the past 3 or so years since I have been out of the scene and clearly have a lot to (re)learn thanks again to those who helped or even just tried to help (and thanks as well for some good luck I seemingly stumbled upon along the way) 👍

One final question as I reach a logical pausing point. Is there ANY way to lock down software update? I of course turned off but know Apple tends to not always respect that setting/wish. In days of yore we used mobile profiles we knew would never hit as a way to block updates, hide the update process, or even had a JB or 2 that OFFERED to block updates. I don’t have PiHole operating so I can’t blackhole the update (if that would even work), so looking for a solution to ensure nothing changes my loadset on this ATV as I plan for updating the other 2…

ARM vs intel SHOULDN'T be an issue there are ARM & Universaln builds of the new version palera1n. As mentioned my test set is from Intel/MacBookPro. USB timeing should also of course be compatable

Can't follow up on hardware suppliers my rig (DCSD is ancient- old 3 LED version w/USB-A interface picked up from Jin years and years ago), GE at least 4 or 5 yrs ago via ebay sellar suree long gone

If I EVER found myself a week of time I didn;t know what to do with I would look into seeeing if I could get the Linux version of palera1n running in a container (or VM) on my QNAP NAS, so I didn't have to haul my laptop over to my ATV for reboot.... But way to janky for normal I suspect more just proof of concept and learning exercise but have too fix my ZFS issues LONG before tackeling that!

From CURSORY review looks like it COULD be viable with current builds (for ARM).... You of course still need to make sure you have a USB interface to your ATV but maybe that's a betteerr solution forr those cpu chaallanged folks. Just understand that this is VERY fringe so expect do do a lot of colaborative debugging with a good deal of paticence before you reliably construct a predictable rig.... but then yooujr are golden!

Seeems the joy neeverr ends... Dispite not yet having figured out the right way to block OTA updates on 17.5, I havee an old 4k gen 1 that I just can't update the system sopftware on..... Strangest thing. JB with OLD version of of checkra1n running tvOS 14.6....

Tried reverting FS using checkra1n app AFTER ensure in Nito that updates are turned on in the app AND sytem updates are on in the preferernces.... Retried twice (fails afterr downloading)....

Reboooted tried updatee again (anotther 2 times)....

Rebooted, tried to WIPE and update using prefernces..... Same failure right at end of step 1

Then went and reinstalled the OLD JB..... Am back in the boox with root/ssh... Any idea what's blocking and any ideea how to just FORCE it too pull new image off net? I know I can FORCE DFU with my DCSD connected to the GE but DOUBT I want to try trransfering an image from laptop and not supported (outsideee apple)

Guessing either update prefs or processes are still comperrmised so it won't update? Strange no way to just simpley for nuke & pave

Any thoughts from the brain trust?

You can enforce updates by setting supervisor on the device, then installing a profile. Also if you can't update regularly, make sure there's no profiles installed.

Don’t managed prefs only allow/disallow/trigger the same system process as the ui (at least in this case). And I have tried both update in place as well as erase/update (aka reset & update) both with same results…. Other ATV on same version (or close 15.x) worked like champ…. Restored via checkra1n, then sw update via prefs

Not at this point. Blobs won’t do u any good as u have no image to restore. There are VERY complicated attempts been made over years to try to SYNTHESIZE an image from OTA deltas but really not worth the grief and EXTREMELY low likelihood of success…. And this from some who had successfully used futureRestore from the command line years and years ago before things like delayOTA and even FutuRestore gui

No reason for apple to publish images for devices that they don’t have consumer based image restore interfaces. We have access to image restore using jtag or GE like apple but the GM images aren’t published by apple

If u try to force an update u get current for your device type.

Only way around that is DelayOTA not applicable in your case as u are years to late…

IF u are JB now u MAY be able to force a SUPERVISED updat to ANOTHER CURRENTLY SIGNED RELEASE. But can’t imagine ANYTJING for 4k gen 1 signed but 17.x

If AFTER jb I want update and a signed version IS STILL AVAILAVLE AND CAN BE JB then u MAY be able to mange your way to it but that’s just theory since apple NEVER leaves a competmised version signed for years so no point beating that dead horse

Played with kodi when it was xbox media play on my first hacked xbox back in the day…. Long since retired to basement.

U can sideload kode if u really want to hack up Plex to add your iptv streams. Look online u will find solutions that make iptv streaks look like Plex tuners

Sideloading anything will expire in 7 days on a free apple ID. If you were to enroll in a developer account, you'd be paying 99 dollars a year for 365 days of expiration.

Not really a tvOS jailbreak issues but has anyone figured out how to consistently get the CEC function to work? I used to have CEC connectivity with my tv, receiver and 4K APT. This morning it randomly stopped working and I can’t enable it through my APT. I’ve made no changes to my settings and CEC is still enabled on my receiver. Only option I have now is control volume via IR on receiver or tv.

Ok think I figured it out. Had to reset 4K. After reset “Auto via HDMI (receiver)” function came back. Re-jailbroken 4K and still have CEC controls again. CEC controls on APT’s are so janky.

Had to create later 2 levels of the heirachy. The search did present anything useful as private/var/root/Library/Preferences/com.apple.MobileAsset.plist refers to only Siri settings, and /private/var/mobile/Managed Preferences/mobile/com.apple.MobileAsset.plist is the file I created (with later 2 directories per sugestion linked above). Anyone have something different for an UNMANAGED system?

As someone who years ago worked for a DNS company (and met one of the original authors of DNS)…. Blackholeing the right apple subdomains (if I knew them) might work locally (as you were implying for the ATV) but won’t help me as my phone of course can resolve using WAN/mobile data services…. So I would also need to run a vpn or run something to attack the dns config.

Is there a version of secureDNS that runs on ATV? Recall seeing a version in AppStore years ago I think in installed on my phone

There's 3 stages at first, one is prep, then second is doing checks, then third is application

And the checks are in place to see if the firmware has been modified or if the filesystem is compromised (jailbroken)

I have it working on a ton of them but for some reason I have 2 4K 3rd gens that it just refuses to work on and just does this... i'm doing the exact same thing I'm doing for all the other ones I even factory reset the damn thing lmao

GOT IT. Finally. Found one guy that had the same error and said to disconnect the Internet while Misaka is attempting to install TrollStore so I did that and it worked instantly 😒
