Hi all,

Recently took my ATV 4 and downgraded to OS 13.4.8 as I read this was the shiest possible OS you can JB. I used Checkra1n and Jailbroke the device with ease using a USB C Cable.
I then had a NitoTv app on the home screen which I then used to install and configure Kodi. All was working perfectly and after watching a couple films I went to sleep. When I woke up I fired it back up but Kodi and the Checkra1n app were missing from the Home Screen. NitoTV app is still there though but when you attempt to launch it it just flashes and will not open.
The only way to get Kodi back is to repeat the steps of connecting the device to my Mac and running the Checkra1n to enable the Bootstrap again. Surely this can't be the case? Is there a fault with my device? How do I force the ATV to boot into a Jailbroken state after powering off? Please if anyone is able to give me ANY info I would be greatly appreciative.

You need not power off the device. You can simply place the device in sleep by holding down the menu button and select "Sleep" in the pop-up menu. This happened because the jailbreak you're using is only active in its state during boot and upon rebooting, will disable it until you rejailbreak again. This is normal. If you have blobs, you can downgrade to 13.4 and take advantage of Unc0verTV but if not, then checkra1n is your only hope for a jailbreak at this time.

Thanks, after seeing some information regarding tethered and untethered JB’s it made sense as I used checkra1n. At no point in any of the 20+ guides I read was this ever mentioned or explained so I was loosing my mind.

What is a blob though? Surely I can just download an older tv OS and flash that to the ATV and then use Unc0verTV?

It's unfortunately not that simple. The modern Apple TV devices now have a paired-processor called SEP which the blob (a file to allow downgrading) is required to pass through Apples servers during the restore process. Without this blob file, you cannot downgrade. You can, however save them now with a program called the blobsaver which works for windows, mac and linux.

It "was" for me... except I lost functionality with too many vital apps I use to the point where the jailbreak walled me in moreso than to upgrade the tvOS. Apple won.

I am currently on 16.5 waiting for palera1n. Last night I turned on the ATV and caught it beginning to download 16.6. Bugger! I know I had auto updates off, yet when I went to Software Updates it was set to on. No idea how. I pulled the plug knowing it's a risk of bricking the device but it worked... for now.

I'm on 16.5 with the 4k waiting for a potential jb. Regardless of setting all software updates to OFF, the darn thing keeps going attempting to update. Twice now since 16.5.1 landed a week or so ago I've caught the box attempting to update as soon as I turned it on. When checking software updates, the setting switched to Automatically ON. I suppose I could unplug but others at home will not remember to do this and eventually it will update.

I'm willing to try but not soldering lol. What's a PITA, the other day I flipped over to my appletv and go to click an app I want to open. Just as I was clicking the darn OTA update popped up and of course it defaults with Update already selected and was triggered as I clicked the remote. I quickly unplugged the device to stop it. That has happened once and twice on other occasions it was in Step 1 of 2 in the download process when I didn't click anything and all updates were OFF.
