Personally, I found something I find better than kodi. If you're using a tv, all you need is a web browser and you're good as long as you navigate it right. its a website called Showboxmovies.net

anything you want to watch, it probably has it. and I remember kodi a couple years ago had shit servers, thats not the case with showbox.

If you need App Store, regular updates for a while, series 4 is the way to go, you can even downgrade it to tvOS 13 or 10 or stay on 15

ATV3 you can’t do too much with other then media not too much with jailbreaking but you can jailbreaking it tho.

3rd gen is basically EOL except for some Apple only apps. Most popular 3rd party apps require an upgrade. I was trying to sell a couple I had for a friend for months for $25 including the remote and I had no interest in them.

I would love to stay on 13 for the convenience of Reprovision, but one of my sports apps with subscription requires min. tvOS 14 now and won't operate with 13. Oddly, on iPhone that same app requires a min. iOS of 12.

I have been airplaying but that is even less convenient imo. I generally do not like airplay as I need to have my phone plugged in the entire game and can't wander off too far from the TV.

So I successfully updated from 13.4.5 unc0ver to 14.7 checkra1n. With unc0ver, you can choose to block auto updates and it's persistent even out of jailbreak mode. How is it done with checkra1n? Does Nito do the blocking now by setting Software Updates to "Disabled"? And, does it work out of jailbreak in case of a restart?

I rebooted out of the checkra1n jb and I get a popup nag if I want to update (all options are turned off in settings). I never use to get a nag with unc0ver even when out of the jailbreak. Is the nag normal for checkra1n and is there a way to get rid of it?

I know your comment wasn't directed towards me but thought I'd throw in my thoughts on that:

The update promp usually happens when the toggles aren't turned off prior to jailbreaking (Settings - General - Software Update) but you could install the tweak MCPatchTV from my repo and from there install the iOS 16 beta profile. This should work even out of a jailbroken state seeing as the tweak only bypasses the inability to install but once installed, it should work regardless.

As for downgrading (even though you already did this, good job btw) the latest SEP (tvOS 16) is compatible as low as 13.4

I just futurerestored my second appletv, again from 13.4.5 unc0ver to 14.7. It went quite smoothy using the CoocooFrogger GUI. But, before hitting restore, I had to ssh into the device and enter:
nvram auto-boot=false
This prepares the device to enter recovery mode upon reboot. Then whey you hit Futurerestore, it won't fail. A few notes though... if iTunes opens, just cancel out and quit it, then go back to Futurerestore and start it again. Also, this will only work if you have blobs. Finally, before beginning, make sure to check the nonce in your blob matches what your device is set to.

To check your blob nonce, open it with a text viewer search for "generator" without the quotes. The nonce will be between <string> eg: <key>generator</key> <string>0x1111111111111111</string>

To change the nonce on the apple tv
Using Terminal, ssh into device with command:
ssh root@IP
where “IP” is the IP address eg. 10.0.1.9.
Enter password= alpine
Then, type (case-sensitive):
nvram com.apple.system.boot-nonce=yournonce
eg.
nvram com.apple.system.boot-nonce=0x1111111111111111
To verify enter:
nvram -p

I did not have to Restore rootfs ahead of time, although that would probably have been my next option if I had a failure. I used the latest CoocooFrogger GUI. Under options, I only selected "Extra Logs", Latest SEP and No Baseband. I chose not to select "Preserve Data", so the system is erased to stock. Even though for upgrading, it is supposedly safe to "preserve data", I wanted to minimize my chance of failure so I did not select it. I use AppleTV's One Home Screen option anyway and it saves a ton of time when setting up again.

Well porting them over is only difficult because they use different methods that tvOS isn't compatible with. The main reasons that most iOS tweaks don't work with tvOS despite having the same apps are because of how they're developed.

Seeing as Apple TV devices don't hold a lot of personal information, a lot of the features are stripped and instead replaced with different functions and headers. Some of which are server-based and bypassing something such as ads would require a powerful attack like a VPN or a DNS modification.

Not possible. You need physical buttons to talk with the IO interface of the device which usually requires a successful pair. Using virtual buttons won't work even with IR connectivity. This applies with the 4/4K as well with using the remote app.

What you'll need is a legit Apple TV remote or a knock-off (about 5-20 bucks) then you can initiate DFU.

You can downgrade a gen 4 HD model to 13.4.8 with iTunes, then use checkra1n to jailbreak. You can also go back as far as tvOS 10.2.2 but I wouldn't bother as some apps will not work. If you have 14.x blobs, you can then jump from 13.4.8 jailbroken to 14.x and jailbreak again with checkra1n. This would only work for the gen 4 model with the USB port on the back. All 4k models can not be downgraded at all.
