So it wasn't the blocker view thats dismissing it/hijacking the event, it was the tap gesture that is added to the system gesture manager whose handler method you hook to do nothing (rather make it not dismiss). So the gesture code was giving precedent to the system gesture manager one over the one you added to your view.
