Thanks
While I’m here with everything set to default, to Add my camera I select video capture device is that right?
Yep
I’m using apple plug in headphones for now. Which source should I add?
In OBS Settings -> Audio, make sure Mic/Aux 1 is set to Default
Is that right?
Yes
What should I do for the next resolution here
Right-click the screen capture source -> Transform -> Fit to screen
Beautiful thanks
I’ll give this a go 🙂
Is it possible to round the edges of the talking head
Indeed, but that's a question for #stream-setup
Thanks
There’s a little bit of glitch still at random times
Also do you know how I can optimise my audio through the iPhone plugin headphone microphone
I’ll be using iMovie to edit. Which file type produces the best picture quality?
Record to FLV or MKV. If you record to MP4 and the recording is interrupted, the file will be corrupted and unrecoverable. If you require MP4 files for some other purpose like editing, remux them afterwards by selecting File > Remux Recordings in the main OBS Studio window.
Hi everyone
I am getting the Green Video Output when using the Virtual Camera
Any fix already released for that?
Intel based Mac here
my live stream is ending after 43 sec i need to chance the obs settings or my youtube settings
Im from brazil
yes, update obs
To help resolve your issue, we need to view a log file from a fresh launch of OBS Studio containing an output session. Follow these instructions to upload a clean log file:
- Restart OBS Studio first!
- Start your stream/recording replicating any issues (meaning having any games/apps open and captured, etc.)
- Stop your stream/recording after 30 seconds or after the issue has occurred
- Click the Help menu → Log Files → Upload Current Log File
- Paste the URL into this Discord channel

Hi, I am using MacOS 12.6.8. I have updated to latest software. I have gone to screen recording and it’s OBS only selected - yet I am still seeing black screen on OBS. Any help with be m much appreciated.
Best regards,
Thabo
Try this
If OBS Studio reports that it does not have system permissions but they do show up in System Preferences/Settings, follow these steps to fully reset permissions for OBS Studio.
1. Quit OBS Studio and System Preferences/Settings
2. Open the Terminal app (located in /Applications/Utilities)
3. Copy-paste this command then press Return: sudo tccutil reset All com.obsproject.obs-studio
4. Type in your user password then press Return. Nothing will appear on screen while you do this.
5. Open OBS Studio again, then set your permissions straight away in OBS the OBS Studio menu → Review App Permissions
Furthermore, make sure you have only one copy of OBS Studio installed in /Applications. Multiple copies of the application can cause issues with properly setting permissions.
Thanks for this will try it and feedback
I actually disagree with that bot command - especially on macOS you should only record in MP4 or MOV, particularly because MKV will introduce inaccurate video framerates that you cannot fix even with remuxing.
I have several hard drives worth of unfragmented MP4 recordings without any issues and if one is concerned about crashes, we got fragmented MOV an MP4 support.
How can change my video to another app other then Apple Music
?
Because I can’t watch my screen record videos and Apple TV won’t open my video I made
No anyone
What other video viewer are you using? VLC? IINA? Movist?
- In Finder, click on the file
- Click on the File menu -> Get Info
- Expand the Open With… section
- Choose whatever alternative player you like, such as VLC
- Click Change All…
well when i recorded my first screen recording it lead to apple tv for some reason
If you are having problems with playing content created by OBS Studio in Movies & TV or QuickTime Player, this is because the media player does not have proper format support. This causes missing video, audio, or for the file to not open at all.
We recommend VLC Media Player for better, accurate format support. Like OBS Studio, VLC Media Player is a free and open source project.
Thank you OBS🙏🏽🙏🏽
https://obsproject.com/forum/threads/is-multiple-chroma-key-possible.149192/ should also work for mac yes? I'm having trouble figuringout how to nest this properly, image in #plugins-and-tools
It’s now showing this ⬇️ not my actual desktop screen
That is your screen, though
You’re showing your OBS window so that’s what it’s capturing
Sorry I’m a dafty For it to show the presentation I have on my desk top do I have to add it from somewhere or I need two screens?
Two screens, record the app with the presentation itself, or start recording and minimise obs
@tardy sedge
If you're using OBS Studio 27+ on Windows 10 1809 or earlier, your system must be configured to run OBS on a specific GPU, depending on the type of capture you are trying to do.
Click here for instructions on how to configure your system.
Should the M1 chip be able to handle console recording at 1080p60fps?
depends on the codec you intend to use
e.g. vanilla M1 does not have ProRes hardware acceleration, so that will cost more performance that HEVC with a high enough bitrate
in general recording with HEVC on macOS should get you best results because it's hardware accelerated, higher efficiency than H264, is supported out of the box by all Apple devices - depending on your usecase you might need to re-encode into another format later, but you'll always keep the better quality HEVC recordings
(ProRes is even better, but you want at least an M1 Pro for that and it takes up a lot more disk space because it's intended for video editing)
I appreciate the detailed response. I’m strictly looking to capture gameplay footage at 60fps and then edit it in DaVinci. It sounds like the M2/M2 Pro would better for this?
what M1 do you have?
The regular one (Max Mini). To my knowledge, it didn’t have the ProRes option.
that is correct, afaik the M2 added ProRes support to the vanilla variant
but in your case I'd probably just record with HEVC hardware, 25mbit
I haven't checked if DaVinci opens HEVC on mac just fine (it should but it's not first party, so ymmv)
fallback can be what Shadowplay does on Windows: H264 at 50mbit
it eats up more disk space, but the quality is high enough (because of the high bitrate) that you can work with those files in editing
I think I recorded 1080p60 gameplay at 35mbit with H264 before we added HEVC support
but usually increased the bitrate for high motion games or games with lots of stuff going on to give the encoder enough breathing room
I’ll be honest, I’m really new to all of this, so I really appreciate the help. So I need to use H264 at 35000 for the M1, or was that for the M2 line?
you can use HEVC, but I'd advise recording a small video (15 seconds or so) and attempt to open that in DaVanci
(because with HEVC you can lower the bitrate as the codec is more efficient than H264)
if DaVinci opens it fine, keep using HEVC
and start at maybe 25000 as bitrate and always set bframes to 2s to ensure that the files can be scrubbed through
Got it! I’ll give it a go a bit later. If I run into any issues, can I reach out to you directly on here?
just ask the channel in general, lots of people can help you here
so just ask away and if anybody is around, they'll probably pick up your question
Probably don’t want to record using a constant bitrate
if it's high enough it should be mostly fine, but ABR/VBR would give some flexibility for high-complexity scenes
though I did have audio sync issues with H.264 Shadowplay recordings after cutting them into clips
Hi,
I am trying to record myself in 1/3 of the screen and have a presentation on the other 2/3.
Source - I am using my iPhone 14 Max as the camera to capture my 1/3.
I am using the display capture to record the presentation.
Earlier messages I asked for help as my screen was showing black screen, now it’s working. The next two challenges I have are my videos are lagging, first I thought it was because i was using the iPhone to record via a browser, but I then tried using the laptop camera there was still a lag.
2. My presentation on the 2/3s is not covering the full screen is it because my laptop has Retina display of 1280 x 800. And I am trying to achieve 1340 x 1080.
Hello there, Im using OBS 29.1.3(64 bit) on a late 2014 mac mini, running macOS Monterey 12.6.8. Im using a Presonus Studiolive 16.0.2 for my sound imput via usb to the mac. I have audio coming into the mac that i can monitor and see in the macs prefernces screen but i have no audio in OBS. What am i missing? lol
This is what my recording looks like. It's super choppy. Is the M1 not capable of doing better?
did you try adding a source for it?
For high-quality, no fuss recordings, use the recording quality presets in Simple Mode:
- In OBS Settings → Output, set the Output Mode to Simple
- In the Recording section, change the Recording Quality to High Quality (better performance) or Indistinguishable Quality (better quality)
- Select your encoder. If available, select a hardware encoder (such as NVENC, AMD, QSV, or Apple)
Imagine, Im a complete Noob! lol. how would i go about that?
To learn about the various sources and how they work in OBS Studio, see the Sources Guide.
I'm recording my Nintendo Switch using a capture card, and am using an Audio Input Capture and Video Capture Device on OBS. While OBS is recording the audio and video fine when I record, it's not playing my Switch's audio through my computer's speakers while in preview mode (despite the audio mixer showing that it's picking up sound). Is there any way for it to do this? Thank you!
To hear your audio sources through your own speakers/headset:
1. In OBS Settings → Audio, set your Monitoring Device to the speakers/headset through which you wish to hear the source audio, then click OK
2. Click the Edit menu → Advanced Audio Properties
3. For each device you wish to hear, change Audio Monitoring to:
- Monitor Off: only hear in your stream/recording
- Monitor and Output: hear through your device and your stream/recording
- Monitor Only: only hear through your device; don't hear in your stream/recording
Note: ensure you use a different monitoring device than any device you capture. Otherwise, your stream/recording will contain an echo.
Installer for OBS macosx intel chip corrupt when trying to open (downloaded from OBS webpage) 😦
The currently-supported version of OBS Studio (29.1+) runs on macOS 11 Big Sur and higher.
- if you use an older version of macOS, you may see the "corrupted image" message (A). To solve this, download an appropriate older version of OBS Studio.
- if you are running macOS 11 or higher but still see this symbol (B), download the latest Intel version of OBS Studio
hello i have a question about the capture for my game
i already have the game capture but theres one issue
every time i record my clips and watch them, later on in the vid the screen angle changes to the side and i dont know why
for example
this is what it does and i need help
Hey mate I’m still getting a bit of lag and the audio isn’t really in sync with the video?
To help resolve your issue, we need to view a log file from a fresh launch of OBS Studio containing an output session. Follow these instructions to upload a clean log file:
- Restart OBS Studio first!

Not sure what you're saying it does, the screenshot is only partial and I have no idea what it's meant to look like
- MP4/MOV Recording
- 61.3% Rendering Lag
- 84.1% Encoder Overload
- macOS 13.5 (OK)
Intel Core i5-7360U @ 2.30GHz - Below cpu encoding requirements / Intel Iris Xe - Possible bottleneck
Any ideas on what I can do from here?
Wait a tick
Perhaps 1080p is a bit more than your Mac can handle, let's try 720p
OBS Settings -> Output
Change Simple to Advanced
Click the Recording tab
Change Encoder to Apple VT Hardware H.264
Change Bit Rate to 2800 kbps
OBS Settings -> Video
Change Output Resolution to 1280x720
Change Frame Rate to 30
<@&715347355565817879>
@frigid coral try those settings, let's start from a lower setting then work our way up
thanks mate. works better still not 100% https://obsproject.com/logs/sBbwMAbn5gqo2Sk6
- MP4/MOV Recording
- 36.6% Rendering Lag
- macOS 13.5 (OK)
Intel Core i5-7360U @ 2.30GHz - Below cpu encoding requirements / Intel Iris Xe - Possible bottleneck
Thanks sweepy team
Certainly better. The rendering lag means that there's probably too much activity happening on your Mac while you're recording.
Considering how relatively simple your scene is (only two sources), I doubt there's much to do on the OBS side
What are you capturing?
Yeah it must be the program “TradingView” that I’m using when recording my videos.
Perhaps. If it uses a lot of your resources, it may not be leaving enough over for OBS to use :)
However I’m only using about half of the cpu space with those two programs running simultaneously?
That’s still a lot, especially on a six year old machine

Hello everyone
I’m trying to stream on twitch with obs, once I press record my system basically unusable. I tried reducing the video and base output but it’s just maximises screen that is displayed, when I click the resize to source screen it change the video system back to 4230x2340 can’t remember that exact number, but the highest one.
My system is a 2019 mac, 500gb storage and 16gb ram, core i7

hello! i need some help with my OBS I've tried different things for hours and i could really use some help
It appears that the desktop audio isnt recording, but my mic is. I know in the most recent update there was an addition of a Application Audio feature, but i cant download it on mac. I'm wondering if this is my issue and how i can resolve this on mac, without reseting OBS. (I dont want to loose the 10+ files i have)
i mean at that angle when i record and i have the screen on a perfect fit it randomly moves to the side

i'm struggling with green screens/chroma keys
I'm trying to get multiple chroma keys working
it is possible to do multiple chroma keys/green screens in one scene right?
i have 4 glowsticks RGBY, I've managed to lock in the red one, i'm struggling to get the rest
in action: https://www.twitch.tv/shades_mccoy I'm trying with SDF effects and chroma key
I'lll be around for another hr if anyone is knowledgable
i don't know why the blue one looks different than the magenta one, both are set only to outershadow with min distance of 8
but the blue one loks like it's borderless or something the magenta one has this gradient to it
the magenta one also stays magenta when it's not moving but the blue one does not do that and idk why
I will post the vod in case anyone who isn't around now will know how to fix it when i'm not at my machine
Hi guys, I was just wondering if there is a feature that can trigger a scene when a Twitch hypetrain starts. I have a scene with overlays and music for a hypetrain.
That's not a Mac-specific issue. Try asking in #stream-setup
Hi. Can someone guide me on how to improve "projector preview" quality?
I am trying to use PS4 on my Mac using OBS (bcz no discord on Ps4) I have got video and audio inputs and outputs figured out. I have a second 50" screen i want to use for OBS projector display. But the quality is 720p at best while PS4 is outputting 1080p HDR 10.
Video quality on mac screen is good but too small bcz of OBS interface.
How do I improve video quality here?
I am using 1080p canvas
Hello, i've been having some issues recording applications with any sort of quality. I found a tutorial online for macos recording settings, and have done my best to follow it. I'm running on a macbook air, m2, with 8gb of RAM and 256gb SSD. I suspect my issue lies within my encoder, as the tutorial suggested i use "Apple VT Encoder". For some reason, I don't see that in the encoder list, just a long list of other encoders. I also cannot set keyframe intervals in seconds, but in frames? Is this some kind of settings issue, or something else I am unaware of? Thank you in advance.

For Apple Silicon Macs, does OBS use the CPU or GPU when you select hardware video encoding?
it uses the media engine hardware encoder
If I have a M2 Mac Mini and I upgraded to a M2 Pro Mac Mini, would I see much of a difference in gameplay recordings?
I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction or know a script to get around my issue. I used to be able to load a browser window just fine into OBS. Now It's not showing that it's depracated and there's no browser when trying to input a window. Anyone have any advice? P.S. I have a MacBook Air M1, But this was also happening on my HP with Windows 10/11 and Also was happening with my previous Macbook Pro late 2019 prior to M1. I thought and still maybe a hacking issue? Been experioencing them here and there since like january this year, not sure why but that's the only explaination I can think of since I used to make and upload videos almost daily, now without the window feature available, it makes it a lot more difficult to create the videos I used to create.
how can I disable this icon when capturing?
as far as i know, you can't
correct
i need to file a feedback about that. it's actually quite annoying. even more annoying is how the system places the same icon along the title bar of any window you are capturing, and sometimes it doesn't go away when you full screen the window, and just hangs out floating in midair
Use a full screen projector. Right-click the preview -> Full screen projector
But remember that the projector uses the same resolution as OBS Studio's base resolution, so if your base is 720, so will be the projector's
Use macOS Screen Capture, not a deprecated source
Hey team!
I have a question in terms of configuration. Whatever settings I choose, OBS Studio captures only the left upper corner of my screen. See a screenshot attached. Could you please help me find out what settings should I choose so the software captures the whole screen? Thank you a lot and have a lovely week!
first, get out of studio mode?
Hi! I was wondering if anyone had any idea as to why all my MacOS Window Capture properties lose their audio after I end stream/close OBS. I have to manually remove all my window captures, close out of the apps and reopen them and then readd them to OBS to get the audio to work on them again. It’s done this since I started like 2/3 months ago and I’m so tired of redoing it over and over everyday
you are talking of screen capture, right? because window capture does not have any audio
Yes yes I guess it’s the screen capture then!
am sorry I seem to remember smth similar but I can't find it anymore
Sorry, wasn’t sure where to put it & I use Mac. thanks for letting me know.
No worries, ty anyways 🙂
Hey mate is there anything I can purchase to help my cpu gpu for a better experience. Graphics card or anything
Unfortunately not
Ok thanks
I'm making progress, i'm 50% of the way there
I'm spinning 4 green screens (RGBY) around, and I've managed to chroma key the R and the B but I'm struggling with the Y. I used the eyedropper tool on it, but there's nothing in the preview window:
why is this?

So i got a new monitor and it runs fine but when i try to record the obs is like way behind the monitor(there is delay in my inputs) it wasnt like this before so im curious on how to fix it
ik it is prob something super easy i just am not very tech smart
Hi! is there a guide here to transfer settings and files from one mac to another? All the videos i found on google are windows and idk exactly where to put the things i exported from OBS. Thanks!
!export
exporting the scene collection and the profile, and then importing them back in will transfer respectively the scenes and sources, and the settings.
It will not however transfer the assets, that is the files you're using in your scenes, for example images, videos, html files...etc.
You'll need to manually transfer those and then tell OBS where to find them
To export OBS settings to back them up, go to Profile > Export (to export streaming/recording settings) and Scene Collection > Export (to export scenes).
Thanks! but will it also copy the settings i have for my mic and stuff? like the filters i added (no plugins)
ooops sorry i misread
sorry for the dumb question but where exactly can i copy the json files to the new computer?
anywhere you want, then in obs on the new computer, click scene collection> import and select the file
same for profile except profile is a whole folder not just a json
aha, makes sense. Thank you so much!
any reason why this is happening? im trying to do a test recording
Im running Ventura 13.4
https://obsproject.com/logs/xhnEEna1Tjbx4IUr
heres the log file and my settings. I just moved my obs to a new computer
- Unrecognised Encoder
- macOS 13.4 (OK)

you need to either create a new profile, or manually change the video encoder, both in recording and streaming
^
See how the computer is behind and slow
That’s what i want to try to fix
Being behind is normal
That is inherent to capture cards, they need time to process the signal to make it usable by the computer
No avoiding that
so when i upload the video will it look like that?
Well no
Because I only mentioned the delay
I didn’t say we were finished talking about the choppiness
oh ok
What kind of capture card is it
elgato HD60 S+
On macOS, some older Elgato capture devices may not be supported or require workarounds to use with OBS Studio:
- Game Capture HD and HD60 are not compatible with Apple Silicon-based Macs. On Intel-based Macs, use the Elgato Game Capture app in full screen, then capture it with a macOS Screen Capture/Window Capture source
- HD 60S is not compatible with Apple Silicon-based Macs. On Intel-based Macs, use the OBS Link app
- HD 60S+, HD 60X, Cam Link are compatible with all Macs and can be captured with a Video Capture source. Make sure you are using a USB 3-compliant USB cable or adapter, connected directly to your Mac if possible
@wide hearth check that bottom link about the cable
That choppiness usually comes from using a USB 2 cable or a hub

i just copied a youtubers settings
and when i record i have a voice deley like i hear my self while i record and i have a voice deley
but when i listen to my recording i dont have it enymore
well im just confused because im using the same usb(isnt directly in my computer tho) from my last monitor and now it isnt working
should i send a pic of the cable or smth

don't monitor your mic
Otherwise, your stream/recording will contain an echo.
set it to monitor off, as described in the bot's message above
i copied just settings in a tutorial
i cant see the bots message for some reason D:
If messages from OBS Bot appear blank, you must enable showing embeds in Discord:
- open Discord settings
- click on Text & Images
- check Show embeds and preview website links pasted into chat
The cable to the monitor doesn’t matter
The cable between the capture device and the computer does
ok thanks bot!
i hear my audio but i dont want to and even when i turn it off i still hear it and i have an deley
should i send a picture of that cable
You can just tell me where you got it from
All cables look alike, a picture won’t help
!log
close OBS, reopen, send a log
Hmm. Perhaps a photo would help then, because that cable has a USB-A ending on one side which Macs don’t have a port for. Could you photo how it connects to your Mac?
through an adapter
is that a bad pic
i can try getting a better one
Hmm, I would be interested to know what speed that hub runs at
ok so i send my log or whatever that text i copied
how would u like me to find that
I’m nearly at work, give me 5
ok
yeah, send the url in here
- Mismatched Sample Rates
- Windows 10 22H2 (OK)

so.??
the mic/aux source is still on "monitor and output"
also yes
oops sorry
- Click on the Apple menu
- Hold the Option key on your keyboard
- Click on System Information at the top of the menu
- In the sidebar, click USB
- Send a screenshot of the window
A-ha, it's a USB 2.0 hub
That's why the bot says not to use a hub, because the hub is slowing down the connection speed of the cable from USB 3.1 down to USB 2.0
That's causing the choppiness
You'll either need to buy a USB 3-certified hub, or a USB 3-certified USB-C cable
could u send me a link to one of those so i know im buying the right one
Not really. You need to look at the product specs from whatever store you purchase from or, if you go to a physical retailer, ask them to check for you
is it not online?
Sure, but do I live in your part of the world? 😄
oh sorry
does that look good to you
Not really, it's only USB-C at one end
If we're talking cables, it has to be at both ends so that you don't need to use a hub/adapter
More like this, I guess: https://www.amazon.com/Transfer-NIMASO-Charging-Thunderbolt-Compatible/dp/B0874HH4ZZ?crid=2TPPEO07ZZP8P&keywords=usb-c+usb+3&qid=1693942130&sprefix=usb-c+usb%2Caps%2C335&sr=8-10
Okay if you think that is right ill buy that one
(this is why I don't like making product suggestions lol)
But if the cable lives up to the advertising, then it should work better
okay ill try it out i can always return it
tysm for your help!!!
👍

I presume you're going to record or stream Splatoon, so a word of note
Because of the delay, if you're speaking over the game using a microphone, you'll be talking about events slightly before they actually happen, which can be a bit confusing
To fix that, you can add a delay to your microphone's audio source so that they're in sync by using Edit menu -> Advanced Audio Properties, then editing the sync offset
ok perfect
I've actually been rewriting the macOS capture source and got it in a place where I can play a game running on my Windows machine via the preview on my mac 😄
and that's with OBS capturing the game on Windows and throwing the full screen projector on the capture card's screen, if you pipe the display straight through the card the latency might be even less
also framepacing is much better because it's not being treated like a webcam anymore, but still have to polish the rework
yep, but haven't pushed the recent changes yet
there is a weird IOSurface exhaustion issue I need to get to the bottom of
but in essence I added a "sync" variant that takes the samplebuffer from the delegate and retains the IOSurface of it, so I generate a texture with it in a render call
so no more async frame caching or anything
the only drawback is that every frame is converted to BGRA by CoreMediaIO so I can throw it at OpenGL directly
so you lose a bit of colour accuracy, but it's damn fast
pushed the changes - it's ridiculously experimental though, so handle with care 😄
for sure. very neat though! will watch with interest
@neon lily hey mate I’m going to buy a new MacBook so that I can record high quality videos with good sound. Do you have any recommendations on which MacBook setup to go for? Thanks
Any of the new ones, they all work great
Hey, is it normal for OBS log to show an incorrect value for the amount of memory your system has? It says I have 98GB of memory which I don't
- Wrong Color Format
- macOS 13.5 (OK)
- No Output Session
- Third-Party Plugins (1)
Apple M2 Max 12 Core 3680 MHz - OK! / Apple Apple M2 Max (not in benchmark DB)
That is 96 Gb.
I thought that too, so I checked with google.
@west ibex I think both of these actually show GiB and MiB respectively, and 98304 MiB = 96 GiB
Thank you. I’m sorry I was assuming MB incorrectly
No problem. We should probably adjust the prefix in the log to be more precise.

Hello I'm new here.
Been streaming with a windows laptop but want to switch to a Mac book any Mac book user advice?
I don't know what my issue is in downloading the two streams at once plugin. Someone help please?😅
What part aren’t you understanding?
I am downloading for my intel mac, but its not popping up in OBS, and in package contents I am not seeing the plugin anywhere.
You wouldn’t see it in package contents, it doesn’t get installed inside the app
It should get installed to ~/Library/Application Support/obs-studio/plugins
Which package did you download? So I can test it myself
I just went there and nothing is showing up.
I've tried the universal and the macos x86
Okay, let me test on my machine. Give me a tick
Hm, plugin is definitely installed in the right place for me, when using the universal installer
Let me see if it actually loads
And it loads in OBS just fine
Could you send a screenshot of ~/Library/Application Support/obs-studio/plugins please?
And to be clear, that's the Library folder in your home folder, not the one in Macintosh HD
I am not seeing the folder
You can get there by clicking on the Go menu -> hold Option -> click Library
@neon lily do you think this will be suitable
Like I said, any of the new ones
Hello! Looks like I'm missing the OBS webcam from the Discord list of webcam options
Must have been either a Discord or MacOS update on my end
That being said the wiki to do the codesign fix appears to be removed? https://obsproject.com/wiki/MacOS-Virtual-Camera-Compatibility-Guide#discord
Is that because the codesign fix no longer works? I'm seeing an "Operation not permitted" when I got to sign again
not sure what happened to that page. it might have gone the way of the buffalo as they transition to obs 30, which doesn't need any extra code signing. i'd recommend either using the obs 30 beta, or else using discord in chrome with obs 29
if you have the old command, it should still work though, you may have a mistake in it if you're seeing operation not permitted
The codesign fix was never a real fix
It was a terrible bandaid at most
Using the Beta is much less of a bad idea in comparison, so the codesigning got removed
Although @charred heart you have the wrong link anyways, end-user information is (mostly) in the knowledge base now
This would be the correct one: https://obsproject.com/kb/virtual-camera-troubleshooting

Yes!
My obs is stopping again, everytime i record it pauses and i cant see the rest of the video it just gets stuck on the same screen
- macOS 13.5 (OK)
- No Output Session
Apple M1 (not in benchmark DB) / Apple Apple M1 (not in benchmark DB)
Wait so what do i do?
Not use Window Capture, for a start. Only use macOS Screen Capture
So that whatever you’re trying to capture can be captured
Also, do you use OBS in full screen?
no
I have OBS Studio installed and it’s playing my desktop audio very low even though I tried to up the slider as much as I could. Anyone know why?
I have a Mac OS 10.15 I cannot download OBS and use on my MBP 2012. However SE.Live works and runs. Will I run into issues?
Se.live might run the version of OBS that is compatible with your operating system. If you tried downloading OBS directly from our website, it might be trying to install the newest version of OBS which is not compatible with your operating system.
When you run the se.live, does it give a version number it is running?
27.2.2
64bit
!macversions if you want OBS without the se.live plugin, download the one specific for your operating system :)
I believe it is 29.0.2? I just referenced the guide myself and quickly forgot, sorry, tired brain lol.
I have MacOS 10.11
Yes 10.15 is Catalina
In that bot command I linked you, if you click the first link and scroll down, there is a link to an OBS version for 10.15 Catalina
But if you have 10.11, use whatever OBS version it recommends
If you don't want se.live I mean
Thanks!
@spark niche where can I ask questions that are more related to personal setup for twitch etc
#stream-setup could be a place. If it becomes something that is unique to Mac, ask here.
Ok did not see this channel originally
All good heh. :)
Which method of desktop audio capture are you using?
screen stuck like this, any ideas?
!macdocks
Docks in OBS can be managed from the Docks menu in the main OBS window.
You can toggle docks on and off, or lock or unlock docks to prevent moving and editing, as well as add custom browser-based docks here.
You can also reset the UI from this menu to return your docks to their original state (Docks > Reset Docks).
And any particular reason you're on that older version?

Hi 👋
I'm using macOS Ventura 13.5.1 (m1 max) and OBS 29.1.3
But I can't use the Virtual Camera on discord and web browsers..
There is no option OBS Virtual Cam on the camera options..
Could you help me? I couldn't find any solution on the forums and github issues.
Use Discord in Chrome
When the next update of OBS Studio comes, then you will be able to use the Discord app
But for now, you need to use Chrome
Ahh ok.. I got it know.. Thank you for answer @neon lily
Last question. I'm using apple numeric keyboard and its have F13, F14 ... F19 and these set this buttons on hot keys scene switch..
If OBS actively on menu-bar, F17, F18 and F19 don't work (F13, F14, F15 and F16 are works).. But if i click the desktop and MenuBar change to Finder, these (F13...F19) are works very well..
Do you have any idea? @neon lily
What do you mean?
Unlike on Windows, desktop audio isn't captured automatically on macOS version of OBS
So if you're saying desktop audio being captured is low, I need to know how you are capturing it. Look at the article below.
OBS Studio running on macOS 13 (Ventura) and later can capture desktop and app audio using the macOS Screen Capture source.
For previous versions of macOS, see the macOS Desktop Audio Capture Guide.
If you weren't aware of that, then you're probably just capturing it through your microphone 😄
I can't understand why these 3 keys (F17, F18 and F19) don't work when obs is active.. I removed the assignment and I reassigned it but it didn't work. its very interesting =/
Hello, I have a problem with OBS from 40 minutes when I stream on Twitch. I have my audio output which stops working after 40 minutes. Do you have any solutions to help me. Thank you all.
@magic raven The key instruction above is 2 — the log must replicate the issue
If you've done a stream like that today, you could send a previous log
!previouslog
Hi, I'm new to OBS and have experimented with it the past week. I'm encountering an issue, that seems to be due to an OBS setting only on my Mac. Inside OBS in the preview I get to see a sharp background picture behind my camera stream. I'm using the backgroundremoval plugin on the camera. When I use that scene as virtual camera then the streamed background is blurred. When I guide colleagues through my settings, their background is sharp. I fail to find the place in OBS that's causing that.
Can someone help me, please?
literally just earlier today I saw a post on reddit saying that macOS apparently has a system bokeh setting for cameras that can affect virtual cam. there should be a setting for it near the clock, for audio/video effects.
if this is the same issue that's a big coincidence since I didn't know about that before this morning lol
No it is not. I tripple checked that setting and even toggled it on and off. It didn't make a difference.
ah, shame
I feel like it has to be a setting outside OBS, though. OBS would not be doing this without a specific filter that you'd see the effects of in the preview
Lately I'm experiencing two type of problems: I open a link on whats app, I clik on the link to access the platform where my classes take place, the whatsapp screen is in a tab and the platform of my classes in another tab, both in the same window. I display the tab of my class (the one that I want to record) but OBS records the whatsapp screen instead; however I can listen to the audio of my class. This is one of the problems. The other problem is that OBS records the screen of my class but when I open the converted filed it's frozen so there is neither actual video nor audio. Today I checked the permits I granted to OBS and accesibility was unchecked. I have also eliminated my antivirus because I have read it could lead to problems. Could any of those be the cause of the issues? I use MacOs Ventura 13.5.1 Could you please help?
oh sorry, i didn't notice that you already ruled that out, i was scrolling back
apologies
Oops same
support team owning
big issue here cant seem to solve it with how i have done in the past, audio is playing in stream but not through monitoring headset but when playing youtube on desktop headset is playing audio so not a headset issue
HEEELP Getting really tired of the mac problems im getting right now, making it unusable for making recording and using OBS overall.
Everything seems to work just fine and then suddenly, the MACOS display capture freezes and the audio goes away. This doesnt come back until I either
- Uncheck and check "Show cursor"
- Choose display back and forth
Happens every 30 min or so and really annoying when you cant trust that the audio and video is being recorded. Seen lot of people having this issue on internet aswell and noone seem to have a solution.
Please tell me theres one, been dealing with this too long
MacOS 13.5.1 M1 Pro
what version of macOS are you using?
13.5.1 on M1
Saw people recommending to update to 13.1 when that released which seemed to help some people but thats quite some time ago now lol
13.1 was the problematic version, and 13.2 fixed it, but yes, the issue still exists and hasn't completely gone away
unfortunately the only thing that can be done is filing a feedback with apple =/
So annoying, paying shit loads of money for a laptop and cant capture audio properly
And people saying "Macs always works"
Thanks for your help tho! Cant quite understand how this still is a problem, I mean been through LOTS of updates and still here
Only thing I havent tried is to reinstall the whole system, which I would really like to avoid since I have a LOT of plugins for music production
And not even knowing if that would help.. ^
that's unlikely to help
It may or may not be fixed on macOS 14, from what I've heard? yam could correct me on that
replayd still freezes somewhat frequently in 14 from what i can tell
ah, meh.
So im not the only one with this problem?
no consistent repro though
nevermind then.
No, it's well known unfortunately
and something that would need to be fixed on the macOS side, nothing OBS can do about that
True! I just dont get it
Thanks for your help tho!
Ill keep my fingers crossed for MacOS 14 but nothing really happened when 13 came..
definitely do file a feedback though, if apple isn't actively looking into the issue they should keep hearing it from users
Will do for sure! Quite new to mac, howd you do that?
Hence my frustration, these things just worked on Win 😦
Thanks again!
no probs, best of luck
I presume the new macOS Audio Capture will be similarly affected by this replayd issue?
hard to say if an audio capture by itself can trigger the issue, but if replayd freezes, it freezes for all captures so audio capture will definitely be affected
Sorry but whats Replayd? What we just talked about? lol @neon lily
Sent Feedback to Apple bout the issue now
replayd is the macOS process that's responsible for handling macOS screen capture
it's a background process and when it misbehaves, thats what leads to the capture freezing
Oh! Makes total sense, didnt know that! Shouldve added that to the feedback!
I'm struggling a little, but I think it's a waves thing. So I'm trying to add some of my waves vsts to my mic input in obs, but none of them show up. The only "VST" wave installs (by default) on mac is "WaveShell?" All of the information I'm seeing on how to install waves plugins on obs seems outdated or targeted to windows. Has anyone come across this?
Am I missing something obvious?
I guess what I'm asking is, is there any known way to support vst3 on mac
meh I'm just gonna route audio from a daw and work around that constraint.
got a working poc, will do a test stream this week with it. I'm worried about sharing resources between the daw and the encoders, but we'll see how it goes
How do I show logs
there isn't currently
VST 3 support is planned, but no ETA
currently you can only use VST 2
And if you're on Apple Silicon, you may have to use the Intel variant of OBS Studio if the plugin you're using doesn't show up, as OBS can only load VST plugins built for the same architechture (and most VST 2 plugins are only build for Intel)
Don't follow the steps, but instead click "Show Log Files" or "View Current Log"
Right on, thank you.
Hi Mac Users, I wonder if MacOS (M1) can have the desktop Audio inputs like the Windows PCs?
OBS Studio running on macOS 13 (Ventura) and later can capture desktop and app audio using the macOS Screen Capture source.
For previous versions of macOS, see the macOS Desktop Audio Capture Guide.
If you do screen capture it will capture your desktop audio, but it's better to do mac os screen capture so it's just capturing audio from the application you select
Thank you, finally found this solution here.
Hello, does anyone can tell me where the content of this page went?
https://obsproject.com/wiki/MacOS-Virtual-Camera-Compatibility-Guide
Well, that unfortunately does not do, for me...
I was looking for these lines :
sudo codesign --remove-signature "/Applications/Discord.app/Contents/Frameworks/Discord Helper (Renderer).app"
&& sudo codesign --sign - "/Applications/Discord.app/Contents/Frameworks/Discord Helper (Renderer).app"
I found it on web archive...
you can also try OBS 30, which is in beta, with which the virtual camera should just work without the need for any code signing shenanigans

What version of OBS are you using?
i did check for updates and it says im up to date
OBS studio 29.1.3
the main thing im looking for is to be able to record game audio and my microphone audio at the same time but the issue is that my mic also pics up the game audio for some reason so there’s just a little muffled extra layer

you'll need to be more specific about what you mean by "my quality is garbage" because your log doesn't show any significant issues. in settings->advanced, your color range should be 'partial' and not 'full.' other than that, your settings are essentially fine, so if you need further assistance, you should post an example of your output, or else be more specific about what your issue is

OBS Studio running on macOS 13 (Ventura) and later can capture desktop and app audio using the macOS Screen Capture source.
For previous versions of macOS, see the macOS Desktop Audio Capture Guide.
Adding desktop audio to your stream is a deliberate act, so you have to know how you did it. It doesn't happen automatically.
I add it and it doesn't pick up the other people on my stream
But how do you add it. What are you adding?
I have 3 other people on my stream and we use Discord. My audio is picked up fine. Theirs is not
Of course your audio is being picked up, you're capturing your microphone
The Desktop Audio is suppose to pick up theirs
No, it's not
It doesn't
As per the bot message, that doesn't do anything automatically
How do I capture their audio from Discord?
Did you read the message sent to you by the bot?
OBS Studio running on macOS 13 (Ventura) and later can capture desktop and app audio using the macOS Screen Capture source.

I did and it wasn't helpful
I have a Multi-Output Device created
Why
Because that is what the directions say?
Oh wait, what version of macOS are you on?
I have the current version
The VB- Cable section literally does say that
Why are you looking at that section
Literally says that's for previous versions of macOS
Read from the top
The top has 3 steps all of which I have done and no Audio from Discord is being captured.
I didn't see your macOS Screen Capture in your screenshot of the audio mixer
Don't have an option to add MacOS Screen Capture
Seems like you're on an outdated version of OBS Studio
macOS Screen Capture has been available since OBS 28, we're at 29.1.3 now
What version do you have?
27.2.4 Guess that is why
Now that I added macOS Screen Capture to capture audio out of Discord, do I need the other two in the Audio Mixer?
@neon lily
How do I get OBS 29.1.3 64 bit to capture my screen with the display capture feature? The problem is the "device not connected or available" Also, I can't change the properties to select my attached monitor or my built-in monitor. I will also add that MacOS screen capture does nothing as well.
OBS Studio requires permissions from macOS to provide certain features. To grant them:
1. click on the OBS Studio menu → Review App Permissions
2. enable each of the permissions using the buttons on the right-hand side
- (a) click on OK/Allow for the microphone and camera prompts
- (b) grant Screen Recording and Accessibility permissions in System Preferences/Settings
3. restart OBS Studio
For more information, see the macOS Permissions Guide
@vernal compass did you get your issue resolved?
Hi team, was wondering if someone would be able to help me with a query.. I have OBS and the elgato HD60 X and want to start recording gameplay. However, when I try to record my gameplay I am unable to record in 1080p, and when I try to increase the quality, the recording keeps glitching. I am not technical at all but note that I connect the HD60 X into my late 2016 Macbook Pro, is the reason because the laptops specs not good enough?
Do you mean by glitching freezing and stuff? I have a 2016 MacBook Pro and I can’t even use OBS
So yes your laptop is not good enough but kinda depends on what you are recording

Should all be there, might be in a format like MKV which you cannot open right away
need a editing software or a encoder to transform that if you wanna see it right away
You can open it right up in Davinci tho, should be the same for Premiere or Final Cut

Hey guys! I do frequent recording for youtube with my iphone through OBS on my imac. Last week my continuity camera started messing up and wouldn't recognize my iphone. When it does connect it shows the start up date and time of all apple products which is January 9th 9:41. Sometimes it connects and sometimes it doesn't. Has anyone had a similar issue?

@old mesa @forest axle I figured out the reason. When I turn on the OBS virtual camera and use that as source in my app Mac OS shows me only the OBS camera in video effects. Toggling portrait on it has no effect as mentioned in the OP.
However, when I turn the OBS virtual camera off and select the MacBook's internal camera in my app the video effects controls of MacOS showed that portrait is turned on for the built-in camera. I turned portait for that camera off, turned on OBS virtual camera and picked that one in my app again: The background is not blurred anymore.
Now, I don't know how OBS processes the video stream coming from MacOS. But it appears that OBS is receiving a blurred stream from MacOS, removes that blurred background and MacOS is blurring the replaced background again before sending it to my video stream consuming app. MacOS doesn't seem to respect the OBS camera's portrait video effect setting but applies the built-in setting again.
wow, bizarre

Hello, I am not seeing virtual camera appear in discord when active in obs. Anyone have any advice on how to get it up and running. Thanks! specs: apple M1 Max ventura 13.0, obs 29.1.3. Discord 0.0.277
Use Discord through Chrome
When OBS Studio 30 releases soon, it will have a new virtual camera that works in Discord. Until then, you must use Chrome to use the current version of the virtual camera.
Thanks, I tried that and discord through chrome was only picking up the webcam, not the virtual camera. but I'll try it again. Thanks for the quick responce
You may need to switch to the OBS cam in Chrome's settings
Chrome Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Site Settings -> Camera
Thanks, I got it running. You're the best
Hi good afternoon I was wondering if anyone can help me with this weird issue...I use a macbook with a M2 chip currently running on Ventura
I had sucessful streams for a few months and I had great audio with no issues at that time my destok audio in the settings was not disabled
a few months later i tried installing an el gato capture card but i found out it was too old for my computer so basicaly I unistalled the software for elgato but now my streams have no audio and when i go to settings it says my desktop audio is disabled and i have no option to chnage it its like locked
what i find weird is that before i was able to record and do streams with audio and now it wont work , not even with audio input devices its all muted

Couldn't be more relevant if it tried

Be sure to restart OBS first
I have restarted my mac and obs many times
Yes, but I need you to specifically restart now before you send the log
If you don't restart now, the log won't contain the info I'm looking for to help solve your issue
@clear fossil?
I have a question. If I mount a hard drive via SMB protocol, is OBS remotely writing the video to that hard drive while recording?
i've never tried using OBS to write to a network drive. you'll most likely just have to try it and find out :p
I cannot get party chat to capture in the live so the viewers can hear the team. I’m on PC. I did it once before and it worked fine but, I can’t get it to work again. Could someone assist me?
sorry what do you mean by the image in obs?
a screenshot of what you're running into may help
Yes, and it'll suffer for it because it will likely not be able to store the video data quickly enough over the network connection and the remote storage.
Save locally, then move after the recording is complete.
worked great, thanks! Wish i could control the media volume tho lol
are you using macos 13 or something older? with ventura and above you should have normal control over the system volume and there should be an entry in the audio mixer in OBS you can adjust as well. if you're using a multi-output device, yes, your volume controls will be limited though
so i set up something for the visual camera
and its just loading
ill take a ss
later
and post it
sorry
no worries, post it whenever
its already scale to window only
i can't entirely tell what's going on there. i would honestly just reset your UI entirely with view->reset UI, and then fit your source to your canvas size by right clicking it and doing transform->fit to screen
or transform->reset transform followed by transform->fit to screen
is this ok?
it looks like obs is working normally, yes
ok thanks 👍
there!
the thing is just loading
i was using the discord reactive images thing
for the browser url
because thats what the guide said
idk how to make it load
hmm ok, so that's an application that's meant to capture your discord activity and acts as a browser source? i hadn't heard of that before. if the app isn't working that's unfortunately most likely an issue with the reactive images thing though. are you sure it supports macOS?
or sorry, not a plugin but just a browser source
i would make sure it supports macOS. it looks like OBS is showing the browser source correctly, but the browser source isn't picking up what it's supposed to be, which is yeah, most likely an issue with that application
well thanks for the info
ill see if it works with macOS
if not then 🤷♂️
it seems like the website has its own discord server
ill ask around there
if you want to know what it is search discord reactive images FugiTech
hello
when we are streaming an live from one youtube channel to another, how to give audio out from first channel
enable desktop audio
How to improve the quality of the video in obs?
depends what you mean. usually it's a matter of your bitrate or resolution needing to be raised. a good starting point is a clean log if you're seeing subpar quality:
To help resolve your issue, we need to view a log file from a fresh launch of OBS Studio containing an output session. Follow these instructions to upload a clean log file:
- Restart OBS Studio first!
- Start your stream/recording replicating any issues (meaning having any games/apps open and captured, etc.)
- Stop your stream/recording after 30 seconds or after the issue has occurred
- Click the Help menu → Log Files → Upload Current Log File
- Paste the URL into this Discord channel
i am not understanding exactly
hmm, what kind of video capture, and can you explain what exactly you mean by it disappearing?
if you're confused i'd say just try to follow the instructions in the bot post just above yours. i'm saying that usually when someone says their output looks bad or is of poor quality, they either need to raise their bitrate, or else their capture is just lower resolution than their display, so it looks blurry. but it could be a lot of other things too. so generally it's better to see a log, which the instructions will tell you how to produce
- 12.5% Rendering Lag
- Old Version (27.2.4)
- macOS 10.14 (EOL)
- Third-Party Plugins (2)
Intel Core i5-7360U @ 2.30GHz - Below cpu encoding requirements / Intel Iris Xe - Possible bottleneck
thanks. hmm, your machine is really at the very bottom end of cpus that can really run OBS, so you're going to have to make some tradeoffs.
you're hitting some rendering lag, which might be contributing to the perception of poor quality. to fix that, you might want to try making your canvas resolution equal to your output resolution (settings->video, change canvas resolution to 852x480 to match the output resolution). you may also want or need to switch from 60fps to 30fps. with a system this old, it's unfortunately a bit inevitable you'll have lag
the low resolution might also be contributing to the recording looking "bad." but unfortunately you're going to have a lot of trouble encoding at higher resolutions so you might be stuck with that
the rest of your settings seem basically fine, given the machine and the old OBS version
it's sort of supported, but your macOS, OBS, and your machine itself are all quite old, and so, from what i can tell, you won't be able to get much better results than what you're currently getting. i don't think that version of OBS supports the hardware encoder either, and even if it did i'm not sure how capable it would be unfortunately
Can someone help me setup an external microphone?
so what should I do now?
To make the quality better
i have a mac and i deleted obs but still have this on my broswer, how do i get rid of it?
OBS Studio contains a virtual camera that allows you to output your scenes' video to application such as Discord, Skype, etc. To learn how to use this feature, see the following guides:

How do I record screen with chrome window and show Mac like image in the background?
@neon lily can i please get some assistance mate
When recording a Window Capture, say the terminal and I choose that scene, OBS seems to use a greyish or washed out color for that app. If I record that application via the display capture as a scene, it uses the full and correct colors.
Why does this happen? Is there no way to capture the true colors of the Window being captured in a scene?
Welcome to the OBS community support channel. If you have a question, go ahead and ask it, and if someone is available to help they'll respond. Try to be detailed, and provide a log if you are having issues with streaming/recording (Help -> Log Files -> Upload Current Log). Please be patient if someone doesn't respond right away!
that shouldn't be happening. are you using macos screen capture, or the old deprecated window capture/display capture? the latter two definitely have incorrect colors and shouldn't be used on modern macOS/OBS, but macos screen capture should be correct
there are other reasons that colors may not come out 100% correct, but they shouldn't be relevant to the capture method
hmmm, I don't see a MacOS capture. Also, this is a Window Capture vs a Display Capture. When I use the Window Capture, the color of the window is completely washed out but if I use Display Capture, that app shows it's full colors
what version of macOS are you on and what machine? the best thing might just be a log
!maclog
For example, this is how it looks when I do a Display capture...it looks good and accurate
but if I use the Window capture, this is how it looks
I'm using an M2 Max running Ventura 13.5.1
oh
you're on a very old version of OBS
you should update to modern OBS which has macos screen capture, which performs much better than display/window capture
and has more correct colors
huh...just noticed that...I think I installed this via brew
ok, let me give that a shot. I didn't realize it
i didn't even know obs had a brew formula. yeah, i'd hit https://obsproject.com/download
Download OBS Studio for Windows, Mac or Linux
assuming you're on a p3 display, even deprecated display capture won't be capturing correctly despite appearances
yep, there is a cask. Updating now
it looks like the cask is on the correct version, so you most likely just haven't updated in ages?
Yea, for some reason that one never updated. So strange
I had to uninstall and reinstall just now so giving this another run! Thanks again for pointing that out
looks like that's installing the intel version as well, which you probably want the native apple silicon version
are you in an x86_64 shell?
nope, i'm on arm completely
not sure why brew is installing the x86_64 version then. there isn't a universal binary either unforch
are you sure your brew isn't the legacy intel version? what's the output of which brew
usr/local/bin/brew and homebrew version 4.1.11
ah yeah, that's x86_64 brew
i assume you migrated from an old intel machine
you'll probably want to deal with that at some point
yea...I think it might have been time machine...this is a whole other can of worms
I'm going to fix that first before solving the obs issue. This will break some of my automation for sure
Thanks a bunch for your help! Looks like I have some work to do
no probs! my personal strategy is, there's software i depend on that is only installable via intel brew. so i have multiple brew installs. arm64 brew installs to /opt/homebrew/ while intel brew goes in /usr/local/bin/brew. then i have automation set up so whenever i am in an arm64 shell, /usr/local/bin/ is completely removed from my $PATH. and when in an x86_64 shell, /opt/homebrew/bin is removed from my $PATH. this seems to work pretty well
good point! I'll think about this and see what I require. I may be safe but I'll have to do some testing
the good news is that my terminal does see arm64 when I run uname -m
yeah the shell stuff should still be normal. when i want an intel shell i use arch -x86_64 zsh
Looks like the terminal I use defines both architectures too:
file /Applications/Warp.app/Contents/MacOS/stable
/Applications/Warp.app/Contents/MacOS/stable: Mach-O universal binary with 2 architectures: [x86_64:Mach-O 64-bit executable x86_64] [arm64]
/Applications/Warp.app/Contents/MacOS/stable (for architecture x86_64): Mach-O 64-bit executable x86_64
/Applications/Warp.app/Contents/MacOS/stable (for architecture arm64): Mach-O 64-bit executable arm64
Amazing how this OBS issue surfaced a deeper issue...gotta love it
I'll report back later when I get this going and tested. Thanks again!
hey i was wondering if someone could help me with something ive had going on. whenever i have obs open or recording, my actual game lags whenever i try to play, but the second i close obs, it works fine
Just ask your question, no need to ping me, there are other people who can help
now running 29.1.3 and yep, using arm this time. If my source is either an Application Capture or Window Capture, the color is completely off. But if I do a Display Capture, the colors are absolutely fine
interesting. sounds like you may have hit a bug. what program are you capturing, and what display are you using?
I've tried using the macos display and my samsung 4k display. Both do the same
using Warp, Terminal, iTerm. I haven't tried anything else like a browser, etc just those three
it's almost as if OBS is trying to highlight the entire Window or Application I am capturing
can you send another screenshot that shows what you're seeing?
Sure
This is how it shows with an Application or Window Capture
and this is how it shows full screen capture, which is what I expect
notice how it's not washed out on the second one. The first one seems to do that maybe to block everything that isn't the application out?
hmm. is that image on the right a part of the actual program, or is that an image that is behind the program? it seems like the program is using system semantic materials that are somewhat translucent, and window/application capture isn't capturing the translucency, which i can't tell offhand if it's correct or incorrect
correct, it has transparency so that's the wall paper
Hmm...so I have all of my terminals like that...let me see what happens if I disable that
dang, that was it 🤦♂️
as soon as I disable transparency on the apps, it looks just fine
that's interesting that it can't look the same way it looks as if it were the entire screen being captured
especially if it's tied to the program
well that's the other thing. macos screen capture should be able to capture transparent windows including their alpha values
but im not sure offhand if that's a macos 14-only feature or if it's also in 13
maybe try putting something like a color source behind your captures with transparency on, and see if the transparency is working correctly
I could try that
i also can't remember if there might be an OBS commit that affects this between 29 and 30 (the upcoming release)
@warped mica i remember something being committed that had to do with SCK captures being given a clear background instead of white. do you think this would affect capture of a semitransparent window in macos 13? or do captures in macos 13 already have the 'clear' background?
I tried playing around with a color source but no luck yet. It's not a deal breaker at this point since I can just disable transparency when I need to record something. A nice to have, of course but at least there is a workaround
maybe an update of macos (that's right around the corner) or OBS or both will address this assuming
...it's an OBS issue
Semitransparent windows never capture their half-transparency
You can also see that by taking a screenshot of the window via Cmd-Shift-4 and then Spacebar
does anyone know how to fix this
If those colors (screenshot of the window and OBS) match, everything works as expected
correct but it does keep the true colors in the screenshot as opposed to washing it out (forgive me for the lack of a better term)
hmm, in macos 14 they do. this is a normal capture of terminal, which is 50% transparency in terminal settings, with a color source behind it. maybe it's an OS 14 feature then
and sadly, they don't
This is the screenshot
I’ll have to read up on the entire conversation then
and this is OBS
he means, if you command-shift-4+spacebar your window with transparency, what does the resultant .png look like?
@warped mica no worries...no rush
Did you manually draw the size, or did you press spacebar and select the window?
This screenshot looks like manual to me
looks like screenshots in 14 also capture transparency correctly
I did the key combo and then when the camera appeared, I clicked it to select the entire window
he means to cmd-shift-4-spacebar capture the window that OBS is capturing, not the OBS window itself
to show whether or not the system is capturing the transparency in general
^ correct
right, this
ah, sorry if that was posted before and we missed it. yeah, looks like ventura just doesn't do transparency in capture in general then?
so that one is outside of OBS
I guess not
...because it happens in iterm and terminal as well
and I guess the difference with full display capture in OBS vs Window or App capture is that it's grabbing the entire display stream rather than just an app
🤷♂️
yeah, display capture shows what you see on your display while window capture just renders that individual window, so the behavior does make sense
macOS sonoma is in the release candidate phase and supports transparency, so if you really want that, it should be safe to update
otherwise you could approximate the appearance other ways, like by setting the transparency of the source in OBS and providing another source to act as the background that goes behind your captures
understood
well, that solves that mystery! Thank you very, very much for your time. It is very much appreciated 🙏
no probs 👍
a clean log is a good place to start. no matter what, running OBS is going to slow down your machine a bit, because OBS is somewhat demanding
- Paste the URL into this Discord channel
can i mute a mic in OBS , i have 2 attached to audio processor
Yeah, click the mute icon for the mic in the Audio Mixer
thnx figured it out
- macOS 13.4 (OK)
- 0.2% Rendering Lag
- 0.2% Encoder Overload
Intel Core i5-7600 @ 3.50GHz - Possible bottleneck / ATI Technologies Inc. AMD Radeon Pro 575 OpenGL Engine (not in benchmark DB)
alr so now what
Your settings are a bit higher than your Mac can handle
I would suggest lowering your output resolution (or even your base resolution), possibly to 1280x720 as a starting point for testing. If you do that, you could also reduce the recording bit rate to 6000 kbps.
it won't let me fix up the properties
i don't even know what i did
i was trying to stream via google chrome cuz i'm tired of fiddling with the discord desktop app and obs virtual camera that way
actually nvm i'll focus on it tomorrow, it's late
Casks usually don’t get updated via brew if the app in question is self-updating (like OBS) though I dunno who packaged it for homebrew
hey there, i'm having really bad lag with obs. and i have the latest version i think, so i can't find the "process priority" option in my advanced settings. anyone have any tips? i checked my cpu usage and nothing is taking up that much. i closed all my programs pretty much
Hi Everyone ! I'm trying to use the virtual camera on OBS (connected to a Canon R6 via EOS Camera Utility), the virtual camera detects the signal but as soon as i press on start the virtual camera, the stream works for 5 seconds and then completely freezes. has anyone here encountered the same issue by any chance ? (for info all softwares are up to data on my mac as on my camera)
OBS Studio contains a virtual camera that allows you to output your scenes' video to application such as Discord, Skype, etc. To learn how to use this feature, see the following guides:
- Virtual Camera Guide for basic setup instructions
- Video Call Streaming Tutorial to set up virtual audio in addition to video
- Virtual Camera Troubleshooting for installation and removal instructions
alr ill try that, thanks
ok i tried it and the lag was a little better but still pretty bad
should i try changing something else?
hello! can someone help me please? I already have Blackhole set up for me and i've been using it everyday in my setup. however today, when i switched to it, my OBS cannot detect the desktop audio anymore even if it was working a few minutes earlier. I already restarted my mac but it's still not working 😦 here is my setup, tho i really didnt change anything tonight
!macaudio @fair beacon
@fair beacon
OBS Studio running on macOS 13 (Ventura) and later can capture desktop and app audio using the macOS Screen Capture source.
For previous versions of macOS, see the macOS Desktop Audio Capture Guide.
i tried this last week however it only gets audio from one app right? my blackhole was working just fine an hour ago but suddenly stopped 😦 its more ideal for me that way so obs can pick up audio from everywhere
What version do you have?
The instructions are both for app and system wide capture on the 13 option.
oh i didnt see the bottom part, ill check! thanks 😄
Some do, but I don't know if OBS is one of them. Either way, thanks!
why is my obs not recording roblolx?
What source are you using?
Hey folks, Im using a MacBook Pro m1pro as streaming machine via ndi while gaming on a windows pc. Works pretty well but - I bought a new oled hdr monitor and want to play in 10bit hdr now. Ndi is capturing but the picture is much too bright. The tone map hdr-sdr filter does not work. Do you have any ideas how to fix the problem?
Is anyone else trying to use continuity cam and gestures with obs? I am not getting constant results as it wont work most of the time. Im on the RC version of sonoma and ios17 RC. And it seems strange that the reactions are listed under my game capture card and not my iphone camera. Any thoughts?
As of now just deselecting and reselecting my capture card source seems to get it to turn on consistent
hey, also is it a known issue that obs doesn't work well with macbook air? is it that my computer just isn't powerful enough to run obs without lagging
hello, I'm having problems with OBS
- I save in original size, but it only takes part of the screen into account
- too much lag
my settings are original screen size (3456x2234), 120fps, Apple HEVC codec hardware, QuickTime (.mov)
MacBook Pro M2 Pro 16inch (12/19 cores)
I’m not aware of whether the NDI plugin is actually HDR-aware already. You’d probably need to set OBS on the gaming pc to run in an SDR colourspace and check if the tone mapping works right, then pipe this via NDI to your Mac
My hunch would be that this system does not really support apps that can tap into multiple camera devices at once and hence might be limited to showing the last ‘active’ device or something. I’ll have to test this theory later on my beta Mac.
how do i get discord voice cha in my strems??
OBS on my gaming PC? I dont understand what to do.
OBS on my gaming PC is capturing a bit washed out picture, but better than the over brighted on my mac
you capture your game with OBS on the Windows machine, have it tonemap to SDR, then use the NDI output of OBS to send that to the network and use that source on your mac as the game stream
but that will cost more cpu power on the gaming machine. With this idea, i could stream from this device directly
using NDI will always incur some cost, how else are you pushing the contents of your gaming PC to your mac right now?
im using screencapture HX on the gaming PC and on the mac the ndi-plugin
Using Screencapture does not use so much performance in comparision to obs capture itself
well you are faced with two options:
-
You can use ScreenCapture HX, which uses the H264 or HEVC encoder on your GPU to encode a lossy stream and send that via NDI HX to the network - as far as I can tell ScreenCapture sends it as-is, so I dunno if it supports HDR (probably by using HEVC) and I don't think it does tonemapping
-
You use OBS to tonemap the capture and use NDI (non HX) to send the high quality stream to your mac
The obs-ndi's source is not HDR aware as far as I know, so it cannot handle the HDR content it receives.
(besides, the preview on macOS will always look wrong even with HDR enabled because we haven't been able to make that work with Qt on macOS yet)
NDI's default format is also lossy afaik but less so than HEVC or H264, so if you got both machines on a gigabit connection you'll probably want to use that
both machines are wired on a 2.5G network
Ok, but how can I broadcast the OBS on gaming PC to the mac (streaming machine) via NDI?
set up OBS to not use an HDR colourspace (default settings should be good), add a game capture source, then enable NDI output from the "Tools" menu
you need to install the obs-ndi plugin on Windows first of course
it adds sending and receiving, so you use the sending part on windows and the receiving part on macOS
hm i have installed the plugin
hat it worked!
But the sound wont be streamed to the mac
i had no audio source. it works now
it should, NDI sends audio and video
you either need to add the default output device as an audio capture device in OBS general settings or add it specifically as a source
it seems to work. Thank you very much! Ill give it a try streaming letting OBS screencapture and using NDI without screencapture App. Maybe it does not affect the gaming performance as much
the NDI-plugin in OBS has better video quality than the screencapture hx?
it depends, HX' main usecase was being able to send NDI streams from mobile devices which required it be less resource-intensive and also use a lower bitrate that can be more easily pushed over WiFi
NDI has a much higher bandwidth requirement, but has less latency and if I'm remembering correctly uses only i-frames (imagine an "i-frame" to be a full video frame encoded in the video vs b-frames or p-frames which are like a codec saying "take the last i-frame and just store where pixels moved)
H264 and HEVC use a combination of i-frames and b-/p-frames, the more of the latter it uses between the former, the higher you can compress the stream
whether that difference is noticeable to you or viewers of your stream/recordings is a different matter
but technically NDI (non-HX) delivers higher quality with a higher bandwidth cost and lower latency
it is possible to compare the cpu cost of screencapture hx vs. obs running the plugin?
possible? probably, but I wouldn't know how to benchmark that properly
i think obs wont use so much - it only capture the screen and sending it through the plugin. no stream, no sources, ...
maybe i could compare screen capture vs. game capture
the NDI plugin will use CPU encoding to generate the stream, but because of the high bandwidth allowance and i-frame use, it is less computationally intensive to encode than - say - an x264 stream
so if you generate just a single NDI output, it shouldn't really be too noticeable on a multicore system
hola
me podrian ayudar?
coloco el chat en streamelements pero al momento de colocar en OBS no me aparece
aqui probando que si carga lo escrito en twitch

Hello, good afternoon, thank you, the reason for my doubt is that I am trying to place the Twitch chat in my OBS but as seen in the photos, streamelements does show my chat but when viewing in OBS it does not appear, how can I fix it? ?
??
Hello... new user to obs over the last year or so. I use it for running zoom online workouts with canva slides. I have used it with never an issue. This week I recieve the "Accept Cookies" error box. I want to accept and move on but the box is not clickable. How to I accept and move forward?
Click on the browser source, then click on the Interact button on the toolbar
yo i tried changing my resolution to 720p and it didnt help the laggyness
i also put the bitrate down to 6000
what else could i do to fix it
Might have to drop to 720p@30fps, then bit rate drops to 3000 kbps
exactly?
your specs aren't amazing, but the logs you've sent so far haven't had any significant resource issues. if your footage looks poor, you might want to post an example, along with a clean log. poor quality might be a result of some other issue that isn't just your computer specs
Hey Obs Community, when I record in mono sound the sound is very dark and weird... Do you know why?
i good morning. want show something my screen how can fix all in size. will show few min. ok

Hi there 🙂 I was hoping to get some help- my OBS wasn't able to connect to my Behance Livestream- things I have already tried: deleting old profiles, deleting and redownloading OBS, testing my internet speed. I tried connecting for over an hour last night and this morning once again, but it keeps showing a "disconnected, reconnected" in the bottom left status bar when I initiate the stream- any advice?
If your stream is disconnecting or OBS Studio reports dropped frames, follow our Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide for details on how to reduce these issues.
Great will give this a try
Hi I'm a new member to the server looking for some help with HDR capture on OBS V29 on my Mac. My image is really washed out. Almost transparent. When I check HDR tonemapping in Elgato Capture Utility app it looks much better. But still does not look right, not nearly as nice as the original image. Kind of like a lot of detail is missing.
That’s because for technical reasons it cannot send the actual HDR content - you need to have tonemapping on and manually adjust contrast/gamma to get a good approximation
Thanks for the reply! So are you saying OBS doesn't technically support HDR on Mac yet? Am I looking at an SDR image in OBS then on MAC even if the source is 2160p HDR? Is this true even with high end black magic capture cards feeding into OBS? So a software HDR issue vs a hardware one?
macOS doesn’t support hdr colour formats for uvc capture devices, so we don’t get an HDR output from them
You can use an HDR canvas, but the output will not show correct colours either (a Qt limitation on macOS) but in recordings it should be correct
Thank you so much this has been driving me nuts!
BlackMagic devices shouldn’t be UVC so maybe they expose it to OBS correctly but haven’t tested that personally
So my recordings look the same. Is that because I'm watching them on MacOS?
If I record in HDR then transfer the files to windows should they look true HDR as the source is?
Only recordings with actual HDR content
This is HDR tonemapped to SDR by the Elgato card and slightly adjusted gamma in OBS
Is this only a software limitation? If I boot to windows 10 on a mac machine. Should everything work correctly with HDR?
It’s a macOS limitation for capture cards
here ya go
I'm so confused by what that video is actually representing lol. I mean is that is technically an SDR video? I mean even if the source is HDR, but OBS can't see HDR on Mac so its displaying SDR on Mac. Then you're just brightening an SDR image at that point correct? So even if I record HDR in that manner on MAC technically I'm getting a brightened SDR image and not a true representation of the original source range right?
This is a recording without tonemapping. you can see how washed out it looks. So its not just the preview. the captured recording is not HDR
Correct, you have to manually adjust the SDR input to make it look alright
