yup, amdgpus on linux aren't dependent on amd for continued support

now that 30% perf upgrade is overblown. What happened is that HD7000 series&such got switched over to amdgpu by default rather than still using the radeon driver. Hell I've been running my hd7870 with amdgpu years ago already back when I still had it (cause doing so is literally required for vk support) 😅

so like... sure, amdgpu on gcn&rdna cards is obviously faster than still running radeon on first gen gcn. But nobody has been doing the latter in years, it was just a silly default that stuck around (iirc cause native VGA output didn't work /w amdgpu)

well nobody cared to fix native vga output cause like nobody used it and if you did need it using an hdmi to vga adaptor rather than breaking out the analog pins from the dvi port did the job too. now whether favouring the driver that made the analog pins on the dvi port work over the driver that could do vulkan is actively supported to this day AND everything was the path to go.... that was debatable. Either way switching those cards over to use amdgpu was the common thing to do cause yeah ya had to if ya wanted VK

I think that why the emulators don't work so nicely with game capture on Linux is that the emulators don't seem to release the layers when closed. So those live on till the emulator is closed.

@modest totem If a pcie-e 2.0 x4 card like the 4k60pro mk2 can deliver up to and including 1440p144 in xrgb, a capture card with nearly 1/3rd of the bandwidth will likely have to use a lossy pixel format like yuy2 or nv12. (I wish they'd put these things directly into the description instead of having to cross-reference known data and make calculations.)

Resolution is the width x height in pixels.
FPS is the frame rate.
So, do you play at 1920x1080 120fps? 2160x1440 120fps? or something else. Once you determine that, then you will know which capture cards to look for, that can capture the resolution and framerate you want to capture.

@modest totem Some capture cards connect with pci-e 4x (internal), some use a 5 Gbps or 10 Gbps usb port, some use usb2.0 (480 Mbps). USB capture cards typically can't deliver lossless video at higher resolutions, instead having to deliver lossy video. This is also not ideal in the sense that if you have a buggy USB controller, you have to deal with that.

You look at the game console.

That's the source that the capture card will capture. OBS will take whatever the capture card gives it. And for streaming, Twitch doesn't support high resolutions or a framerate above 60. 1080p and 720p will look fine.
The main use for capturing anything higher than 60fps would be for recording. 120fps can be slowed down to 60 or 30 fps for slow motion edits.

No, USB cannot work at all. Analog is fine.

You just connect the headset to the chatlink, and then add an Audio Input Capture source in OBS and select the Elgato Chat Link (or it might be called Analog Input, I don't recall offhand) as the device.

It'll be called Elgato something or other.

Or you can try going in to the video capture device properties, click on "Configure Video" which will open the driver configuration utility

and you can select analog as the audio source there.

You aren't listening to it from your computer, you're listening to it from the console (from the controller output). The chat link cable acts as a Y splitter, one copy goes to your headset and the other goes to the capture card

If you did want to hear it on the computer side of things you could turn on audio monitoring in OBS. But that wouldn't be for listening through the same headset

OBS should still receive the audio (you'll still see activity in the audio mixer) if you set it up correctly, but you won't hear anything unless you turn on audio monitoring. Capture card audio is treated like mic input, captured but not played out loud by default

Like I said you're going to be listening to that from the console not from your computer. If you hook up another headset or speakers or something you could certainly make it play out loud from the computer too, it just doesn't work that way by default

The headset you're hooking up with the chat link cable is for hearing console audio and using the mic and making sure all of the console audio including party chat gets captured

Hearing what it is capturing playing out loud from from the PC is kind of secondary in the process

I plugged the long Jack into the elgato. I put the female one and my Headset one together. on my Ps5 my output device is going to my HDMI Device (TV) as it says it, My microphone input is my Headset (controller) . I don’t hear anything in these headphones my obs is receiving the Elgato capture card aka my ps5 audio and the good Microphone I have connected to my computer.

My audio Monitoring on my Desktop, Elgato, and Mic is all “Monitor Off”, the 3 sync offsets are 0 ms
