Absolutely! My nephew has bought a bunch of games and got lots of free ones from Epic and elsewhere, and he has anxiety attacks because of games he owns that he hasn't played. He'll install a game just because he feels obligated to play it either because he bought it or got it free, and feels bad playing it, but feels bad if he doesn't play it.

I own almost 5000 games and have had people say to me "Why buy more games when you haven't played the ones you have?" also.

Seems like some people have this notion that because you own something you have to play it or you're a bad person or something. Or you "wasted" your money. When 66%+ of the games were free, and the average price of the rest were like $1-2. I'm like... ok whatever, you do you, I'll do me. 🙂

It's nice to get games when they are free or cheap and toss them into the pile as "someday/maybe" with the option but not obligation to play them. Play what is fun and what the mood serves at the moment.

Your comment also made me think of another time with my nephew where he wanted to play Starcraft MP with me, and I agreed, but then he wanted to play the game in a way and with options I am not fond of and didn't want to play. Told him I play it a certain way that I enjoy and don't want to play in a way I'm not interested in and he got a little pissy with me. Then suggested "We'll play it your way once, then play it my way once." and when I politely refused, he rage quit the game and voice chat. LOL

I sent him a message saying that it isn't fun for people to play a game together just to make the other person happy while not enjoying it, and then switch. I'd rather play what I enjoy 100% of the time or just play single player thanks.

I wasn't the one begging someone to play multiplayer. Beggars can't be choosers. My way, or the highway. 🙂

You know what was unexpected... A few years back I wanted to upgrade the GPU from Radeon HD7850 to whatever the newest GPU would be that had dual-DVI on it which wouldn't be CPU bottlenecked. Did research online that was mostly inconclusive. Those "CPU bottleneck tester" sites are all bogus nonsense. Found video evidence I could probably go to one of the 1600 series cards and intended to get a 1660Ti if the prices were ever sane, but COVID hit and prices of everything went nuts. Computer also died during the early days of that time, so left it sit there.

Now here I am several years later, temporarily stuck a loaner Radeon 5700 in it and despite the CPU being 5000 generations old, every game so far tested maxes out the GPU to 100%, no CPU bottlenecking. So so much for the CPU bottlenecking on old CPUs combined with new GPUs argument, at leats for AMD hardware. 🙂 I am getting 40fps on Cyberpunk 2077 even on medium-high settings. 😛

Yeah, Echo's suggestion of using an audio compressor is the right solution.

Whenever you have an audio source (in anything) where the loudest sound is too loud, and if you turn it down, the quietest sound is now too quiet, this by definition means that the audio source has too high of a dynamic range.

The only solution that actually works is to lower the dynamic range, which can't be done by raising or lowering the volume or adjusting the gain, as that applies to all sounds loud or quiet, and the dynamic range is unaffected.

An audio compressor applied to the full range using a threshold lower than the quietest sound, will reduce the dynamic range to the desired level via the ratio control.

You can then experiment to find the quietest and loudest sounds of a given input, which might be something like -40dBFS to -5dBFS, which is likely going to be simultaneously both too loud and too quiet depending on the specific audio at any given time. This will cause you or other people to have to turn up their volume to hear quiet things, or down to top blowing their ears.

That's a 35dB dynamic range, which is generally going to be too wide. So tossing a compressor with threshold of -40dB, and a 4:1 ratio on it will compress everything above -40dB 4 to 1, or down to 10dB. So now the output of the compressor is -40dB to -30dB which is now too quiet, so you can use output gain to adjust the nominal volume to be where desired, and now only have a 10dB dynamic range on that particular audio source.

As an additional option, a second compressor can be put at the end of the FX chain on the game audio with sidechain to the mic volume, with ratio 2-3:1 or more, and 750ms release time or so, to get semi-pro style audio ducking so loud game noises do not overpower the person speaking.

Thanks! I found a guide on reddit and youtube that do pretty much that exact thing, using a program called equalizer APO which should have lower latency than software with virtual routing since it supposedly intercepts at the driver level.

One guy on reddit really critized pubg's audio for being insane. Apparently the difference between the critical quieter and louder sounds can reach 50dB, which I imagine is pretty dangerous.

They do audio normalization, but it is client side. If someone uploads videos badly mixed above their maximum loudness, they just instruct the player to play it quieter basically. It's based on perceived loudness rather than PPM, so it helps helps combat the loudness wars phenomenon that has plagued music for decades.

Basically, it is "if you want to play that game, we just turn you down so you lose". Also, it lowers the quality of the audio a bit, encouraging people to learn how to engineer audio, and follow their guidelines before uploading it to YouTube.

A limiter serves a different purpose. It is just an audio compressor specially configured for a particular purpose. Namely preventing transient spikes and blowouts from plosives etc.

Think of a limiter as an audio circuit breaker in a way. It is like a brick wall, if audio tries to go louder than a specified threshold, it slams in and compresses the snot out of it as much as necessary to prevent it from being louder.

Naturally that is going to affect the sound of extremely loud things due to harsh compression, so it isn't something that should be triggered by normal content regularly to make it quieter, a compressor should be used to reduce the dynamic range instead.

The OBS built in compressor works quite well.

One approach, is choosing a nominal alignment level for stream audio. There is no official standard for this at all for online audio. Personally I choose to use the standards for broadcast television, namely SMPTE RP-155 because in abscence of any standards for online audio, the television industry has figured this stuff out pretty solidly for many decades so makes sense to me to just follow their standards rather than reinventing the wheel.

RP-155 specifies a nominal alignment level of -20dBFS, so I will align my mic and all audio sources to -20dBFS, which leaves good headroom for dynamics without clipping, and is high above the noise floor, which is pretty low on modern DACs etc.

OBS's audio meters are claibrated to SMPTE RP-155 specs, whether that is on purpose by the team or by accident. The green/yellow cross is at -20dBFS alignment level and the yellow-red cross is at the -9dBFS peak level of RP-155.

So I align my audio to -20dBFS as per the standard, which is easy since OBS's meters are calibrated to it (on purpose or not). Then through experimentation I've found with my mic the quietest sounds I want to pick up and consider legit audio are around -45dBFS, a quiet whisper. Bumping the mic or other loud things can push it to clip at 0dBFS. So I set up a gate with threshold at -50dBFS to kill non-speaking noise. Then noise suppressor at same level and nerf some noise that may be present but not harshly as it can reduce audio quality.

Next I add an audio compressor with -45dBFS threshold, the lowest audio I want to consider intentional and kept, this will ensure the compressor does full range compression.

Through experimentation I have found that having my voice or other sources have more than 20dB of dynamic range, makes for too quiet/too loud situations so I try to compress them to all be 20dBFS dynamic range or less.

So for my mic that would be from -30dBFS to -10dBFS max.

Since the starting dynamic range is threshold at -45dBFS, to get it to 20 or less means using at least a 2:1 ratio, but ideally 3:1 or 4:1 works better IMHO, at least for regular speaking.

So with 4:1 that's going to reduce the dynamic range to 45dBFS / 4 = 11.25dBFS

After compression then the audio signal would run from -45dBFS to -45 + 11.25 = -33.75, which is now obviously too low. You can calculate what makeup gain is needed though. If my alignment level was -20dBFS, and threshold -45dBFS, that means there was a 25dB gap before compression, so after 4:1 compression the nominal level will be 1/4 of that or 6.25dBFS above the -45dB signal. That works out to -38.75dBFS is where the nominal mic audio is now, which is 18.75dB too low.

So add 18.75dB of makeup gain in the audio compressor and now the audio is aligned back at -20dBFS.

And it has a dynamic range of 11.25dB, extending from 6.25dBfs below to about 5dB above, or -26.25dB to -15dB, which is just perfect for voice on stream etc.

Transients and plosives can still cause the output to spike and peak or even clip though, so adding a limiter at -9dBFS or -10dBFS squelches that.

Those mic bumps don't make people's speakers blow up then.

May sound complicated to some, but this is all like grade 3 mathematics so...

The advertising industry also employs this tactic in countries where it hasn't been made illegal, which is what causes advertisements to sound blaring in between content.

The meters in OBS are PPM, but music is typically mastered in LUFS these days, so there can be music with identical LUFS averages, that vary more widely with PPM as the latter does not measure perceived loudness, while the former does.

LUFS also has rules for what actually gets counted (or not), so if you have a reeeeeeally quiet part, it might not count and so doesn't drag the average of everything else down.

if you were getting two of them to connect in the same network, you'd connect them using one of the 10g ports on each

so even if you plugged in a 6-speed nic into a 4-speed port, you'd just get 2.5g instead of any sort of failure

If I wire a second router on the back half of the network ( through a 2.5Gb port on the TRENDnet ) and give them both the same SSID, will most wireless devices be smart enough to use the stronger of the two, or would I be smarter to just name them like, SSID2, and not worry about it? I know, you're not Google, but I'm getting mixed answers there, and don't want to feel that dumb when nothing works.

mesh networking products are smart enough that you can use EITHER wireless or wired uplinks to connect them to the internet and they'd work in a "more cordinated" way

Finally got the YouTube player updates. Other than it messing up some of my Firefox YouTube addons (which will no doubt update to fix that), the only complaint I have so far is that it is upscaled larger. yeah, it totally locks up and the audio is stuck. it's bizarre. I first thought maybe it's an overheating problem, but maxing out the cpu/gpu doesn't seem to have any issues, I did two full memtest runs that came up completely clean.
I did have an issue where my capture card's usb connection seems a bit balky, and it seemed to be connecting/disconnecting, but I thought I fixed that, so I don't know. I need to do an extended test without, I suppose.
also I should mention I'm on a hackintosh, but I've successfully streamed many times before on this setup and it basically functions like a plain x86 mac.

a while back I was able to trigger the same crash by running a very gpu intensive task outside of OBS though, so maybe it is the gpu? then again, running furmark doesn't seem to fase it in the slightest

Yes. I just stream physical media for my friends - VHS tapes, as well as whatever obscure or weird things we find. There are some fun video feedback loops done with OBS and some boring (for now) done with the hardware (sometimes a hybrid of both) - I am working on upgrading it right now

Clownfish and Voicemod are two apps you can try, with plenty of built-in preset voices. Other than those, you may have to go "full manual mode" and utilize VST plugins to adjust the voice sound until close enough to the target voice.

Well, those are the recommendations. Maybe ask on the Roblox community, they may have specific ideas on where to go because they know the same voice you are talking about.
Most of the support here is centered on using OBS as a content creation tool. VST plugins are tools too, just have to find the right one or two that do voice modulation, and maybe try out several to find the one that you like. That's all Voicemod is, a voice modulator.

I remember looking for something similar for twitch at one point, because I wanted my bot to reply in chat with messages that be filtered out so you don't see them on stream (but some messages DO need to be visible on stream, so I couldn't just filter out the bot account itself), but I didn't want to use ! since it looks a bit ugly. most weird characters end up getting filtered out, but I ended up finding some unicode character that looks like a space but "survives" sanitization

now I'm wondering why I can't actually find the code that does this anywhere

I think it's just that everything else in the message, after markdown is stripped out, is whitespace

I did a bit of testing and it seems that at some line length (or some amount of markdown tokens) it has some sort of issue, and that's related to this? and that would explain why there's a whole bunch of spoiler tags with zero width spaces, to exhaust this value

Out of curiosity... What was the purpose of selecting the Triskelion as the symbol for OBS? I assume there's an inherent meaning or relation the symbol has to OBS, but I probably just don't know what it is.

I love OBS, it's a phenomenal set of tools that has made my life much easier. I just always thought it was an interesting choice in symbols, especially since it's been broadly used by a very specific group/interest for decades.

(None of this is said with ANY amount of shade or disrespect to OBS or to that group, to be clear.)

For my streaming, I set up OBS to have two outputs - master (1920x1200) and analog (NTSC or PAL output), both outputs are represented as scenes

So the test pattern had to be universal between HD and SD content. It encodes tons of little neato graphics that help me to debug my hardware

I will explain them because I'm bored and this could inspire some people

1. Rectangles are filled with contrast test pattern: there are four steps of perceptual contrast represented by 4 colors and their additional shades. The main shade is overlaid with a wavey pattern because it looks cool & helps me to test real contrast (the colors are near the ones that get distorted the most by my analog system, but slightly modified to look unique and pretty)

2-3. Vertical & horizontal resolution check - these help me measure actual number of lines & columns as presented on the final output

4-5. Geometric distortion checks: circles for geometric distortion, as well as an additional contrast helper test (where colors change)

6-7. Multibursts 1:4 and 1:1, these reveal processing artifacts (one tests coarse frequency response of the system, other tests fine response)

8. NTSC staircase - it's a set of colors in descending luminance value modulated by increasing phase, the traditional NTSC staircase. Used for calibrating colors and for basic electric checks (line timings verification)

9-10. Edge geometry checks - they illustrate left/right cropping of the line width (or timing), indicate when content is correctly or incorrectly cropped horizontally for display

11. The rectangles themselves help to check geometry distortion, but this is usually not very convenient or useful

There is no vertical timing check here, since there is very little I could adjust in that regard either. First line of the test pattern is the first visible line in output content, and last line in the test pattern is the last visible line in the output content. All output outside of visible range is black/sync pulses

Most measurements work by relative measure of rectangle size, e.g. to check number of lines you just measure the size of the rectangle, measure the point at which all 5 dark lines are no longer simultaneously clearly visible, divide one by the other to get ratio, use a table to look up number of lines from it

Cause I rarely have any tools "in the field", rectangle size ratios seemed like the most sensible (adding little dashes or such was making image look busy, even if it seemed more readable)

I strongly suggest use of multibursts to test your video systems, if what you're doing is more complicated than just streaming on twitch haha

The thing about multiburst patterns like that is that they get visibly moired or distorted when transformed incorrectly, so it reveals presence of some distorting factor in your video chain

I spent a week hunting for fonts with my font nerd friend

And in the end all things considered, philosophy and stuff included, we settled on Futura as the best choice xD

I also previously designed a reference sheet for my flight simulation needs which used Futura. In that case it used Futura because of implicit and explicit connection to the old engineering technology (the manuals for the plane were originally set in Futura or something very similar)

Futura has a drawback of frame counter being variable width (and because it's a rapidly changing number field, it can't be centered or the entire field would keep jiggling around rapidly) xD

But I didn't find a pretty fixed-width font that would go with it better than just having frame counter strategically placed so it's pretty rare that it breaches the margins of the box it's in
