The point is, that obs is in comparison to vlc not a video playback software, it is a video compositor. Mixing different type of materials on a canvas. Where vlc (very easy speaking) only put the decoder output on the canvas.

Vlc is using the render method different as obs. So you can't compare it.

Just for a reference, for actual video rendering OpenGL on windows is orders of magnitude slower than a proper d3d implementation, in nearly all cases.

Also, most modern GPUs use gl on d3d anyway, and that translation layer makes it more expensive.

We are looking in to implementing d3d12 and vulkan though, as potential more modern options.

But with what we're doing there's not a super big gain to be had.

I think a formal #support-volunteers channel where the bot command URL can be pinned, and whatever current issues we keep seeing (e.g. the Valorant one in the last pass) could be pinned and general stuff could be hashed out would both be good in coordinating how support is done and in helping very new folks bootstrap. Right now all of tha is passed on by word-of-mouth. Why not a channel? 🙂

As for the information on current issues, that's what the github issues feature is for. If you're not already engaged on GitHub, I'd recommend signing up for notifications for issues and watching that, as that's what almost all the regulars do.

I'm a bit busy so I don't have time to dive in to everything here, but it boils down to anyone with a tag is a representative of the project, volunteer or not. We give them a voice, and they reflect on us. We're very protective of that, and have been burned in the past by not being as discerning as we should have been about those we give those elevated privileges to.

Anyone with any tag on the server (save the patrons) isa community member that has been recognized. Mods, contributors and developers, etc. are for the most part also support volunteers to varying degrees.

There are only 5 of us who work full time on OBS, everyone else is just a volunteer.

There's always plans to spruce up moderation and provide better support tools but it's a heck of an investment to get right, and frankly I just haven't had the time for it. I try to keep myself available for anything that comes up, and the regulars do ping me often with things that are important and need immediate action.

I feel like I'm speaking wildly out of turn here, but I'm motivated: I really love OBS, it's literally always running on my PC (sometimes two instances of it) and I think it's fantastic that it basically lets anybody broadcast; it has removed so many ancient barriers to people speaking their minds. And I get the desire to protect the public image of OBS, how if someone appears to be "sanctioned" by the project and they're awful, then that could really mar the public image of the project.

So it seems like there's a desire to sanction folks, but a sense that sufficient vetting will take a lot of effort and time, two things the maintainers don't really have a lot of.

But, sanctioned or no, the folks providing support in the support channels - tags or no - do represent OBS to the folks that come in for help. They're already building up the positive image that OBS has. And while I haven't been in here much more than a year at this point, the few times I've seen someone be crappy in support, they were dealt with politely and swiftly. And they're rare. For the most part, the folks carrying the weight of the support channels make OBS look amazing.

I don't know what my point was here 🤪 beyond that I like this place and appreciate you folks and I apologize for stirring up a hornet's nest.

What's the most efficient way to record? I want to record some 1080p 60fps video but the file sizes end up being huge. Interestingly, I've seen some people compress entire movies down to <10gb on sites like the Internet Archive, seemingly losslessly. I was wondering if there's any way to achieve that with OBS? Without having to re-encode an already huge file in something like Handbrake preferably.

those big compression ratios are not done real-time

!localadvanced here's a general starting guide, and then just keep increasing the CQ level untill quality becomes too bad for you, and you have your starting point. you can try and select a harder preset(Nvenc higher P number, x264 "slower" preset) means more time and resources is spent trying to compress it better to save some space
