or it's EA or whoever trying to recoup their losses from another shitty NFS game so they put it on a 90% sale and it finally has some proper player numbers
Yeah, they are kinda crazy with the sales lately. If you already know you like the game then great, if you don't mind their app. Otherwise it has the feel of a fire sale, IDK.
Still haven't played Titanfall 2, but I got it for a couple bucks one time.
Filet for vday
Didn't get a Pic of mine which was on the more rare side of medium rare
Very hard
I ended up knowing where I was more by what color I was than by seeing the location clearly.

imma file a bug report, I just tried to set the replay buffer to 1 frame and it didn't work
160p, the color is dying
probably chroma subsampling artifacts
hard to tell how much is also just compression, probably a significant amount of both
could i get any tips based on my pc specs for what kinda obs settings i should use?
Please run the OBS auto-configuration tool. To use the auto-config, click on the Tools menu in OBS, select Auto-Configuration Wizard, and then just follow the on-screen directions. You can use this tool to get a set baseline settings for your hardware, and adjust as necessary from there.
There are no "best settings." Please understand that every setup, for every use case, will be different. Any guides or videos that claim otherwise are misinforming at best.
We recommend that you start off by using Auto-Config to get a baseline of where your settings should be; click on the Tools menu in OBS, select Auto-Configuration Wizard, and then just follow the on-screen directions. You can test and adjust from there.

Oooh. Sβmore Money Sβmore Problems sounds like my jam.
Got a new car today. Grabbed an Audi Q3.
shiny
Nice! Congrats!
After nearly getting flattened by a semi today, I thought it'd be a good idea.
Totally reactive decision, and not proactive.
Eek! I'm glad you are taking steps to get yourself safer. That must have been quite scary
didn't you get another new car like
Oh, no. Bought the Veloster in Aug 2021. Had it until today. Would have kept it longer, but it's really not made for snowy mountains.
hm must be thinking of someone else then
Yolo bought a new car from Carvana last month, I believe. I know he did, but not sure if Jan, or Feb.
ah yeah that was it
the wave at function in Discord seems broken to me
I don't see how forced pings make any sense
I think servers should leave that disabled
it can be like 5 to 10 waves over the course of a few hours in not small/socialable servers
a.k.a. 5 to 10 pings
I think a lot of servers just don't realize how bad it is until someone tells them.. I know one server, that was the case.. once I sent a modmail in and explained it, they disabled it
kind of wild to me how this is still a thing, it just seems broken... guess it's called Discord for a reason
either that or you are vastly overstating the importance of pings
I mean, I got pings days later in some servers that had it enabled
it just... it doesn't seem good
yeah, so?
I think it should be disabled
you don't need the wave at function, you can still have a welcome channel that people can say hi, if they want
they can send a proper ping to you, if they want
maybe there is a way to disable pings on your end, I never found out how
(no, it's not right clicking the server icon)
tbh I think you're making mountains out of molehills
a ping is nothing
you're making it seem like if you get pinged there's a localised earthquake
I don't think ten pings over a few hours or even days later is a good thing
I don't understand getting butt hurt over pings(I like to use these
just out of boredom when pinged)
I posit that it doesn't matter and the vast majority of people don't care or don't mind
it can be a bit overwhelming when you join a server and you keep getting pings and have to go back to the server and see someone waving at you, imo
yes, everyone is different
I don't like getting bombarded with ten people saying hi when I join a server and notified about that every time...
sucks to be me, I guess
then imo your problem isn't with the wave function but with the join message function
which yes, should be disabled in anything but small friend servers
if you don't get a ping about it, it can be easily ignored
I guess you can ignore pings and just let it pass over a day and then clear it.. but it just.. meh
As with everything, I am late to the party in watching Star Trek Discovery. We only recently got access to Paramount+
What a cool Star Trek show, I've binged the first 5 episodes today. Absolutely love it. Lots of action.
STD is pretty good yeah
If you like Season 1, you'll really enjoy 2 and 3, at least.
Awesome, thanks!
It had a lot of hate but like most things it's usually a lot of loud ppl jumping on the bandwagon
What a terrible acronym.
yeah, they shouldn't have called them sexually transmitted diseases
star trek strange new worlds is pretty cool too
the fact that std is the abbreviation for standard is also rather unfortunate, seeing that std also has meanings as an acronym
Language sure is fun
What about DST instead, "Diseases, sexually transmitted "
Nobody wants to use daylight savings time anyway
saving
it's not a bank account, you're saving daylight
hence, daylight saving time
this notwithstanding that DST sucks and we need to get rid of it
I save all the daylight I can get cos uk
More important than money
Wish I could put it in an account
Yeah it it could just stay +1 hours all the time it would be great
+1 is wrong, the correct time is winter time
Nah I'd prefer it not to get dark at 15:30
What's the point of living when you never see daylight because it gets dark around 3pm
I'm excited to watch that, and Picard too.

If you need help or have questions about OBS, check out our #support-portal first!
can there be more multistreaming plugin for obs or can obs implement integration for multistreaming?
there's currently 4 multistreaming plugins that I know of
not counting se.live because I do not count it as a valid option
Vertical
they can but why would there need to be
i need more options for multistreaming i am currently on a free trial of the streamlabs desktop and it's ending next month
How many in total?
why do you need more options
what in the current options does not work for you
Aitum Multistream should give you 3, easily
because it doesn't fit my needs
in what way
I assume streamlabs isn't free enough
tried that ran into an issue
define "issue"
please try to actually detail
encoder overload
If you need help or have questions about OBS, check out our #support-portal first!
or a network frame drop
pop by support and we can likely have a look at it
but it's likely a limitation of your hardware/network, so more plugins wouldn't solve it
i actually been addressing this issue and i had trouble resolving it
That's an resource issue of your pc, for encoder overload. Too many encoding sessions, one for each stream output plus each recording output. The more outputs you want, the better a pc you need.
well streamlabs works fine with my pc
while obs doesn't
i can multistreaming
with streamlabs
Yes, and each stream is like adding another passenger to your car. If you only have room for two people and you want to take 3... you see the problem?
likely not using the same settings in streamlabs as you are in obs
multistreaming
Then maybe one output to restream, and let their servers do all the heavy lifting.
well
(but once again people creating more plugins won't somehow solve your performance issue)
that can only be solved by tuning your settings
i did recently
someone should just make a plugin that doesn't have performance problems, duh
adjust my virtual memory settings on my pc
π€·ββοΈ
none of this matters
your pc and internet just aren't fast enough if you're getting both encoder overload and network frame drops
I refer you to this regarding ram
and yet you have issues. You can still give that hardware more than it can handle.
which is my family internet
wells thats pretty much why i am streaming to 2
or three
Try streaming to just one stream service, one at a time. Build up your channel and your audience at each one, just not all at the same time. Give each stream a quality look and feel to it. Don't try to divide your hardware and internet resources to 2+ streams at a time, giving each one an inferior quality.
You said you were using streamlabs ultra, right?
yes
free trial
the server of streamlabs does all the work
of my multistreaming
30 days
so just keep using that if it works for you
Yeah, the reason that works is because you're only creating a single stream and sending it to one of their servers. Your system can't handle encoding multiple streams, so that's pretty much the only option you have.
yes, restream would be the same as well.
ok
And that kind of service will always cost money, because servers cost money.
You want someone else to run the hardware/do the work for you? Got to pay up for the service.
!sources
To learn about the various sources and how they work in OBS Studio, see the Sources Guide.
Heck no
then, get hardware that can do what you want
Your choice
I cant do that
Actually I am kinda out of options here
Because my pc is what my parents bought me for Christmas present
You may be limited in options by your hardware and internet, but your choice to not multistream is still an option.
you have two options : either pay a service to do the multistreaming for you, or do the multistreaming yourself but limit it to what your computer can do
I am with streamlabs
congrats
But I cant seem to continue because it cost money
you have two options : either pay a service to do the multistreaming for you, or do the multistreaming yourself but limit it to what your computer can do
I am also in process of saving things up
You keep bringing up the same details and expecting different responses from us.
Yeah I know because I am desperate for these options
there is no other option than those two
We have given you options. This was your reply to one of them: #off-topic message
Because I do not have that much of a income
Besides, does multistreaming help you in such a way that it is worth the risk of sending out an inferior stream?
Whats a inferior streaming
If you have encoding issues when multistreaming, those are inferior (bad) streams, vs sending out one good stream.
It is
Good ones
With streamlabs it is
But not with obs
I am also in a process of obtaining xsplit license
Because with Streamlabs Desktop, you send one stream to them, and they do the multistreaming. With OBS, you and your pc do the multistreaming. Streamlabs does that as a service, so your pc can handle one stream.
Do you understand the difference of one being a service and the other as active functions you have to manage on your pc?
Ok
"ok" is an odd answer to a yes or no question. I'll will assume it's really a "no" and you can enjoy the rest of your free trial.
γ
Looks like xsplit is similar to aitum and multi rtmp
So if those are causing overload, xsplit will as well
Oh ok
which brings you back to the two options for multistreaming:
Better hardware/internet upload
Pay for a subscription multistream service to do it for you.
I looked at that
I currently just yesterday got a 25 dollar visa gift card
From a family member
They just gifted me that
ok, but you understand how literally none of this changes one iota to what we're telling you?
then either multistream directly from your computer in low quality or don't multistream at all
As Streamlabs Desktop is not maintained by the OBS Project, we are unable to provide support for it. For help with Streamlabs Desktop, visit the Streamlabs Support Center.
Note: You can also use Streamlabs wide selection of on-screen widgets directly in OBS Studio. To learn how, follow Stream Layout Tutorial 2: Alerts & Chat Box.
and that's an issue of your internet service, something out of anyone's control from here.
Your hardware and internet are not very good at all for multistreaming from your pc. You should consider single stream content until you have the hardware and internet service that can support multistreaming to your satisfaction.
doesn't matter

My computer is gonna hate me for the next few hours >.<
it does it's job or it gets the hose
That's among the few genuine usecases for ALL THE CORES!!!11 so let its hate for you fuel it's encoding.
These days when I plug in a new device (for instance, a PlayStation Controller, a new monitor, or if I upgrade Nvidia drivers) I instinctively open up Windows Sound Control Panel so I can right-click perma Disable the audio device that gets setup with it...because Windows will always make this the new Default device. In addition, I've made it a habit of setting OBS audio devices (input and output) as explicit devices rather than relying on Default. And I always recommend this to my friends who use OBS.
Is this not a frequent experience for other folks? Just for instance here's an excerpt from my Sound Control Panel showing two of my monitors as Disabled playback devices, as well as the Nvidia HD Audio stuff disabled. Granted, my setup is atypical but this experience seems to have bitten other folks I've helped in the past. (Pen was just explaining t things to me in #audio-support around Windows Device IDs changing under everything and OBS being unable to find devices as a result.)
(This isn't a support question, I swear π Mostly a sanity check to see if this is in fact something specific to my hardware / something I did at some point that set me up for this Default Device Cannot Be Trusted situation I'm in.)
I've seen this happen and not happen. Not sure what the root cause is. Even at work where we have about 200 workstations - with many from the same lot - some do it and some don't.
Generally Windows only does this for devices it hasn't seen before, once you've plugged it in once it should remember whether it's supposed to be the default
Is there a way to tell Windows to NOT do this? haha
Really boils down to a pet peeve of mine. Audio routing is complex enough without Windows trying to help.
I load a preset from sound volume view on boot and anytime some audio device is not configured correctly, it sets the correct default and volume levels and all that
But I also don't have a lot of variance in audio devices on my system, things are pretty static
I've found using ear trumpet has helped π
ooo this looks good, ty Sapiens
Once you have a preset saved you can make a shortcut to SoundVolumeView.exe /LoadProfile whatever.spr to load it, and then have a quick "unfuck my audio" button
That is precisely what I will name it lol
anyone on?
Nope
Never am
Just wait until you find out that sometimes windows will just randomly change the GUID of all your audio devices.
I have seen this (and been tutored in it recently on this Discord)
I've tried jumping ship to Ubuntu; if the Elgato support was better on there I'd be there π€ͺ
It's maddening.
I asctually wanted to write something that would look to see where audio devices were on the USB bus and look up their GUID and set OBS appropriately, to fix that problem on my music streamer's setup (which is really complex, with lots of audio devices), and ... best I can tell, there's no actual way to map where something is on the USB bus to the audio device's GUID. Arrgghh.
I recently had to fight with this for my employer for multiple GPUs (for passthrough to VMs) and the solution so far has been to "the specific GPU doesn't matter, so long as all of them are accessible, we'll just name them after"
But for audio it matters a LOT
Yuuuup. And it'd be ok if the GUID would just stay the same after it was set, but when it periodically changes because of windows being windows... yeah, bigger problem. Fire up the stream and a bunch of audio devices just don't work. (and for us it's even worse, because we've got multiples of the same type of device, so we can't just say "set the monitor device to the UR44" because we have several)
Yeah, same here with mulitple 4000 Adas
They all have precisely the same identifier string, only the bus ID differs
I think the real solution is for OBS to use hardware ID instead of GUID but this is without really thinking about what issues that might cause itself
but if hw ID was used it could just be mapped to the GUID anytime the device is loaded
Can it be, though? I've never found a way to do that mapping.
I think this still runs aground on the issue deadvix and I were groaning about... if for instance the user has two Logitech C920s they'll have identical HW IDs
I think it can, I looked into this months ago
@neon spoke I think they're talking about the PCI\VEN_1234&DEV_5678 type of string that hardware devices have.
If you have even a vague reference to look at for this, I would love you.
I must misunderstand you both? Or maybe this is more specific to GPUs than I realized, but for instance:
% ./iommu_group.sh | grep -i nvidia
IOMMU Group 7 0000:3b:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation AD104GL [RTX 4000 SFF Ada Generation] [10de:27b0] (rev a1)
IOMMU Group 7 0000:3b:00.1 Audio device [0403]: NVIDIA Corporation Device [10de:22bc] (rev a1)
IOMMU Group 9 0000:af:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation AD104GL [RTX 4000 SFF Ada Generation] [10de:27b0] (rev a1)
IOMMU Group 9 0000:af:00.1 Audio device [0403]: NVIDIA Corporation Device [10de:22bc] (rev a1)
The HD IDs for both of those cards are "NVIDIA Corporation AD104GL [RTX 4000 SFF Ada Generation] [10de:27b0] (rev a1)" ... which are bitwise identical. They're different because being in different physical slots lands them into different IOMMU groups (which can be exploited to uniquenly id them) but the hw id string was of no use to me.
(Each of them has an audio device of course, which is the paired device in its respective IOMMU group)
(I ran into the same issue trying to differ them in Windows 11 on that same hardware.)
Hmm. Yeah, you're right, I guess the actual device path isn't actually part of that id.
I had PKEY_Device_ContainerId in my notes that I found but don't remember what that meant π
working right now but can look in more detail in a few
I've been chasing this for years, a few more minutes/hours/days I can handle. π
^^ Speaking of HDMI audio, am I the only one that finds it really, really strange that in the nvidia control panel, you can turn off the HDMI audio for some devices, but never all of them?
I'll never forgive Nvidia for wading into audio <_< stay in your lane, geez
I think you can just only do it for the HDMI output
Audio is a really normal thing for HDMI to have, though?
that other HDMI you have is a DP->HDMI conversion
and that is probably because of DVI devices
...how do you know that it's a DP->HDMI conversion?
Don't mind me, I'm just always going to be fussed at the number of useless nvidia audio devices I have in my control panel
because it numbers from DP 1 to DP 3
Ooh, lol
and because nvidia 4090s have 3 DP ports and 1 HDMI port
Though I don't really see why that should matter in this case, it's still weird!
agreed
yeah so it seems like you can enumerate all audio devices, PKEY_Device_ContainerId will be linked to the physical device and not change, and then from there you can grab what WASAPI needs which is the endpoint string that looks like {0.0.0.00000000}.{f6f0255d-9cf4-41e7-b99e-6ed06a911b30}
so in a perfect world, OBS would store the containerID and then grab the endpoint that WASAPI uses every time the device is loaded
I am sure there is some complication to this I am not seeing/understanding though, I am not an expert by any means just spent some time reading through docs
but without OBS storing the containerID there wouldn't be any way for you to link an outdated device guid to the updated one after it has changed
Hmmmm, Interesting. I'll investigate that, thanks for the pointer!
For those playing the home game, I see https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/install/overview-of-container-ids and https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/install/how-container-ids-are-generated as being potentially interesting on this topic.
My understanding is that PKEY_Device_ContainerId can also change across major Windows Updates (or if you unplug and replug the device) but I have yet to find again the thing that led me to believe that π€ͺ so I guess just rumor for now. It would be pretty great if this is the trick.
Way to pass the buck, Microsoft
well, no
if two copies of the device report identically to the system then the system can't make anything unique about them
so the device has to report something like a serial number
that note exists because many vendors of really cheap clone hardware (usually from China) don't go through the trouble of doing that
Yeah, that makes sense
But it can make something unique, because it knows where stuff is on the bus.
(arguably this can also be useful in terms of having a plug-and-play backup that doesn't require any reconfiguration)
tbh "where something is on the bus" is useless for almost everyone
no one expects their computer to lose track of their webcam because they plugged it into a different port
IDK if we are talking about the same thing still but containerID should persist between swapping USB ports from what I understand
My gut tells me / wants it to be deterministic: like, okay, I have two devices that are identical plugged into different slots. Those slots are not identical. So like...okay, if I have two houses that are perfect duplicates of one another on different street names but both in the same town, there's still a part of that address specification that helps to tell them apart. And it is not remotely that simple due to how USB and PCI each surface device information. (This is more about my lack of know-how around the stuff, not so much a criticism of how it works.)
the fact that those slots(/ports) are not identical is useful to the computer so that the computer can tell which otherwise-identical device to talk to, but the user does not generally expect what port she plugged the device into to matter
or at least, that would be a very niche use-case
What about the he's and theys plugging in
I mean, that's a fair indictment. I am in fact a niche use-case.
(it does happen in some cases btw, like hard drive cages)
Windows already has lots of places where plugging the same device into a different port gets it treated as a new device, though, specifically because many devices don't have a unique identifier, so it uses the location on the bus.
arguably this is behaviour to fix a broken device
Yeah, I have seen that in practice. One smoking gun for me is the GoXLR which, notoriously, would wind up becoming a different device if moved to any new USB port, even if moved back to its original USB port.
I mean, I trust you, you clearly know more than I do π but as a user in my niche it does bite me from time to time.
goxlr did indeed do that(and still does) adds a number to the name, right?
Last I knew, yes
Are there any audio devices that actually have a unique serial? I just look through all of mine and don't see anything like that (...though I might be looking in the wrong place)
I "think" my beacn stuff does but not 100%
mine does afaik
I'm pretty sure my RPC2 does, I've had to move it around quite a bit
or at least I've never noticed anything to the contrary
and I don't have more than one of those in WIndows π yet
Admittedly, on my system here I only have cheap audio devices (but it's also not the system I actually care about).
Still, though, windows has gotta be tracking bus location for some part of some id, as evidenced by the fact that audio devices don't shuffle around literally every time a computer is turned on.

I've got two dual sense controllers
swapping them on the same port, each shows up as audio device4
I moved ports, still showed up as device4
uninstalled device then replugged it in, still device4 (it's in the events log tab)
plug in the second controller on another port... hey that's a 'wireless controller' not a 'dualsense wireless controller' but it's the same GUID?

did the white lotus always release week by week or is that new and something I should be complaining about
is it really so bad waiting a week between episodes vs. waiting months to watch at once?
yeah I hate it
it's so easy to forget shit
I haven't started Severance S2 for this reason either
I don't generally watch a whole show in one go though so I can start somewhere mid-way through a season
Is it not possible in OBS studio to resize a video without the black background that is upright?
If you need help or have questions about OBS, check out our #support-portal first!
Ya know. Me personally I'd rather just binge big chunks at once vs waiting weekly. But there is something about conversing weekly about the recent episode
I prefer to wait years until an entire show gets completed or cancelled, then binge watch the whole thing. I hate waiting week by week, or many months for the next season and forgetting half the character's names, who did what, etc. and having to rewatch the previous seasons all over again to frame where things are at.
Unless it is something where the episodes are not linked to each other as an ongoing story.
"Here's a cliffhanger, wait 9 months until next season to find out what happens next!" no thanks!
I'm waiting to watch Severance all at once too. I find I can forget little details that connect the story together when it's weekly. Binging gives me the full picture. That's probably just my brain, though LOL
that's beyond my level of patience lol
Well, for me... I have like 200,000 TV series already to watch, and 500,000 movies, so lots to bide my time waiting for a series to end. π
If I run out, I have ~= 4600 video games. And I can fill in more time converting Shadertoy shaders to OBS. π
@left mulch guessing you're looking into the "can't access streamkey" errors, any specific things you want us to gather info on for this one?
π
I've been running 30.2.3 since it dropped, still running it now, I stream to Twitch 2-4x a week and haven't seen this happen at all; my streamkey remains accessible.
Not sure if that's helpful, but it does mean I've failed to reproduce
oh you were having this issue and no longer are on 30.2.3? yes that is helpful.
It did happen to me a couple times prior to the upgrade, yes, but it wasn't happening constantly; it didn't happen so much that I came on here to ask for help π
Not sure if still helpful? Let me know if I can offer any futher info
well what I am looking at is a specific issue where you are streaming to Twitch, you get a message that the stream cannot be found when it tries to reconnect, and then you can't start a stream again until you restart OBS.
there's a bunch of shadertoy stuff I'd love to have in OBS, I need to look into how to do this sometime
I've been programming for a long time but shader stuff is a mindfuck to me
I'm actually learning to do ShaderToy -> obs-shaderfilter conversions now, actively. I have a repo of my recent work as well as some how-to notes if that's helpful!
neat, thanks
It's mostly generators (Exeldro has already converted a LOT of solid filters) but they're fun
I also fixed a really niche bug in the glitch.shader which only happened if you left OBS running for 48 hours plus.... I dunno what kind of criminal would dare do that BUT he did figure out how to change that shader to account for it.
gonna give this a read tomorrow. kinda late here now, so gonna snooze for now π«‘
@left mulch #windows-support message
november 23 so before 31.0.0
granted, with a grain of salt, but
That is a problem that can occur in shaders due to elapsed_time being used in periodic functions and the sort. Over time it can cause the shader to gradually slow down or speed up or otherwise cease to function properly. Could be minutes to hours to days depending on how it's used. Can be tricky to work around timing issues like that.
It's really too bad there's not (that I know of) some bit of compilable code where you can basically give someone a binary that does a pcap only on a specific port, and you just have a user run that, duplicate the problem, and send you the resulting pcap file, without needing to understand how to do packet captures themselves. That'd be great for troubleshooting things like that.
In that specific case it was because as elapsed_time got larger (the accumulator was a larger and larger value) the floating point accuracy reduced, which meant it was no longer granular enough for the way the shader used the number
will obs come to chombook @everyone
no
don't @ everyone and no
any good one for chombook
not really. Most Chromebooks don't have the encoding hardware to make effective captures and composites for streaming and recording. Maybe in a few more years.
ok thanks
I donβt think this is the same. What I am looking at is where someone is able to stream but gets disconnected mid stream, hits that error when the reconnect happens, and are unable to restart their stream until they restart OBS.
hmmm yee fair my bad, hadn't seen that was on a first connect
looked into repro steps, looked into microsofts 'fix', but now I'm looking into this 'fix' linked to by reddit
https://superuser.com/questions/1710178/how-to-stop-windows-10-changing-my-default-sound-device/1771947#1771947
last EVO tournament had 16,252 entrants.. that's a lot of controllers.
It ended up taking a hair over 4 hours to render.
Now for this waiting game.
The joy of 1440p videos π
Though it "looks" like it finished processing which has me confused
and here's the result
the overlay that announces the switch can be turned off
ponders if old windows source code is out there, and the sound control panel is legacy af... couldn't we just swap in something that doesn't suck by default?
Nirsoft has some tool related to that
and here's me scheduling SoundVolumeView on event 410
may not address when something else triggers audio device remuneration
cleared my dualsense again, ran balatro, connected it, black screen flashes when the task runs
so having task scheduler run a cmd script instead of launching SVV itself with the arguments was the cause of the blackscreen flashes (lost in focus)
My Android phone keeps shuffling my apps around constantly and last week there is an app that got removed and I have no idea why this is happening
For example the YouTube app will be on the right side of the app drawer and then after a week it's location will be moved to the bottom and the right
The only time the apps should move is if you install a new app
But I'm not installing anything new
sounds like a bug with your launcher honestly, the app icon moving around when the app gets updated (which I assume is what happens here) shouldn't happen
Yea I think it happens when an update occurs I think
yeah that'd make some sense at least, still ridiculous that ye launcher shuffles the icon around when that happens tho
it's an update, not an uninstall&reinstall but newer version this time around
π
Point is to say: Never seen that before on neither me lineage devices (running the stock lineage launcher) nor me current p7a which is currently running a16 beta 2 /w lawnchair
The thing is, if if it was uninstall and install, the app would be at the bottom
In my case it just moves to the left or right 1-2 spaces
O.o
yup def wonky launcher business
android itself doesn't decide where app icons go after all, that's the job of ye launcher
It's actually nuts how many people try to phish you on discord with a fake account. Only mutual server is here.
Yesterday someone tried to DM me, his username showed up as 4 separate accounts on here
M.O. seems to be "find a big public / open discord and spamming as many as possible". Fishing in a pond where there's lots of people and you're more apt to get a few bites.

all pixelated 2d games are 60fps locked?
uh no? Also dunno why ya make this abt "pixelated 2d games", there's plenty of 3d games with a 30 or 60 fps lock too π€·ββοΈ
I have 165hz monitor.
I am looking for some 2d pixelated games to play at 165hz so
Try google the specific games you find to see which support it/aren't 30/60fps locked
Pc gaming wiki will show if a game supports 60 or 120+
Probably doesn't have EVERY game but I haven't gone very deep
it has a shitton of games, but not always all details for everyone
Most pixelated 2D games won't, though, since those usually have animations locked in for a certain time frame, with 30 or 60 frames. Ain't nobody got time to do 165 unique frames for one character.
I mean, you might be able to unlock it, but it'll just be more duped frames often times
After the shutdown, offline features like βbattery levelβ will still work, Humane says, but βany function that requires cloud connectivity like voice interactions, AI responses, and .Center accessβ will not.
whoever wrote that is actually insane
what the fuck use is the battery level for a device that can't do anything else because all it did was talk to a server!?
Ohhh lol that's already shutting down? Lmao
what is your favorite note-taking apps for windows? I'm not very happy with microsoft onenote as the writing code is laggy and not well implemented, and the note-taking space seems too "open" in a way. If you have suggestions I'd love to try them
Text files, my Windows note taking app
Notepad ++
VSCode + the VSNotes extension
Obsidian if you know a lil markdown
I came across that when searching the web! It seems promising!
It also has a lot of plugins so you can get it exactly as to how you want it
I have to 2nd notepad++, also an unlimited amount of plugins for it
I switch between that and vscode
tbh a lot of my stuff goes into evernote, but I really want to get away from it. Still kinda looking for a good replacement. About half the potential options I have to throw out right out of the gate because one of the big things I use that kind of app for is snipping full web pages to be able to reference later, and a lot of things just... don't do that. (not that evernote is particularly good at it, mind you)
I don't think notepad++ fits my needs. I need to be able to put things into tables, place pictures and sometimes draw a line or cirlce on them, put down blocks of code and write mathematical equations. while also having a little control over styling, like writing headers, main text, small text etc. (without too much customization like Word or Docs)
so far my impression of obsidian is good. I'll give it a try for a week or two! Seems promising
Hey, does anyone know a good ai model for translation that I can download and run locally? need to translate from English to Polish
I guess so yeah
will just be the next wave of archived speedruns that get killed like when they made highlights mandatory for permanent storage
is there any good settings to use on radeon 680m igpu with AMD h.264 HW encoder?
i'm trying to record at 1080p and the footage just comes out so laggy and bad
the quality of the video is somewhat good but it's so laggy
If you need help or have questions about OBS, check out our #support-portal first!
then head to the support channel which matches the operating system of the pc where you use OBS.
aight thanks
was absolutely horrible to search for anything through highlights, anyway
which resulted in most people just looking it up on YT
I definitely know people who have openly been abusing the system because "it's allowed" for years of daily streams
Well they ain't gonna be too happy today
yeah, there's someone that I might download some stuff.. there's like 80 hours of skyblock I wanna download
there's like 200+ hours total, but I don't wanna download the whole thing.. just what I haven't seen yet
I could just look up on YT, but Twitch would definitely be higher quality... and why not
well, people could just.. you know.. download everything on their own drives, pfft
I realize it's about 10GB for 7 and a half hours of video (assuming 6mbps)
wait
no.. 20?
yeah, 20gb
I find the static bitrates a little silly, sometimes 2 to 3mbps at 1080p60 looks extremely high quality.. you don't need 6mbps all the time
I follow one streamer with 3,400 hours
This is a streamer I follow. Streams about 9 hours a day.
3400 hours would probably cost them 30+tb of storage
eh... I mean... hmm...
like $300 of storage?
yeah, but have they marked every one of those past broadcasts as highlight to ensure they persist on twitch's servers indefinitely? π
I'm assuming it's on 3 to 4 drives.. but I guess then you need a system in place that costs more money than just the drives
it also has to be mirrored to each region in some way
yeah, you're probably looking AT LEAST double that
and then you factor in that no one thinks to look up past VODs on Twitch
probably not.. this guy is a goofball and just streams his job as we all hang out and just BS around π
exactly π
and, again, there's no search function or anything... they really didn't want it used as this
so it's just.. horrible to look up anything
looking for a specific game? nope, ctrl+f doesn't work, either... it just shows the image of the game, not the name....
so unless it's in the title...
that 7 day limit for non prime/turbo/affiliate people is kind of gross
idk why I thought it was 14 days for everyone
I had prime, so it was 60 days for me
crazy how just linking a prime account to your Twitch will give you 60 days of VODs...
Well data storage is expensive(especially for something that probably only gets a super slight fraction of watch hours vs live)
Twitch isn't built for that. YT is
and I guess if you are not affiliate, you probably don't have many viewers to begin with
And lets not forget there have been a couple of VOD purges over the years at this point, one right when Amazon bought Twitch due to how different the switch over to the new system (at the time) was
These few users who are highlighting thousands of hours...why
it's a hack to have indefinitely persistent vods
instead of reuploading/transferring to youtube, which takes time & lowers bitrate
Tbh anyone even streaming that much and having thousands of hours highlighted, I imagine they must be pretty big streamers with some $$$? In that case maybe there's a business opportunity there if they really don't want to put those vods on YouTube due to reduced quality and time, time is money so maybe twitch can offer increased limits for some $$$?
But I think the reality is nobody would cough up the money cos nobody watches those highlights really lol, so yeah
don't be silly, streamers don't pay money, they get paid π
it's not viable for either party imo
True
Just a random idea but just highlights how useless the highlights are
100 hours is pretty decent tho
yeah 100 hours is a sane limit
Reminds me of the Google photos unlimited storage, a few people exploited the hell out of it
I think google deletes accounts now after 2 years of inactivity?
I mean, that's what I was thinking
but they would need to improve the system, first... BE ABLE TO SEARCH FOR A GAME.. you can't even do that
have to scroll down for... minutes, because it lags and takes ages to get to what you want... and then have to remember the title and ctrl+f! can't ctrl+f game, because it doesn't have it in text, only an image!
it's... horrible.. there needs to be a search function
it's definitely doable to come up with a system like this, but idk if the logistics are worth dealing with
Yeah, honestly always felt the twitch UI really could do with some work
like, you could say $250 a year for this... but if someone is uploading like 8 hours of content a day, maybe it'd cost them more? but they could say you are giving us a lot of money in subs, so
They probably calculated it's not worth it also because it's just a few accounts really hoarding data
But people moving vods to utube is benefitting the competition
yeah
people just don't think to look up past content on Twitch.. they think YT
honestly, a 1080p stream uploaded to YT looks... good enough? I'm not super picky
even 720p looks... okay? as long as the video isn't heavily compressed to begin with
main issue are dark areas, YT just absolutely butchers those
Used to butcher the colour red, too
that's chroma subsampling classic
maybe compression was combining with chroma subsampling and making the issue far worse
In nvidia app i dont even see gpu vram option :/
hope nvidia add it soon.
not sure how this will help https://videocardz.com/newz/nvidia-launches-verified-priority-access-for-geforce-rtx-5090-and-5080
it won't. It's like the way recycling is messaged. Blame the consumer for the company's choices
that doesn't seem particularly useful but I guess better than nothing?
sheesh
assuming 65TiB, that's $1500+ a month to store
or half that if they use S3-IA
you could argue that's likely only a few percent of cost that Twitch made
but you also factor in that
- this is not designed as a backup service and
- views basically turn to zero pretty quickly.... and I can see why this change is being made
I guess if someone wants their VODs in full viewing quality of what they were streamed, they are better off uploading to like Google Drive or something (not sure I'd trust Google Drive, actually)
I also don't think it's great because it's 30 fps limit and recompressed until you download... but, yeah, something like it
well if only one streamer had that kind of archive I'm sure they wouldn't care
even if that one streamer was deeply unprofitable
they said "less than 0.5% of active streamers" but twitch has a fuckton of active streamers, so that number is still large
a quick google says twitch has 6.9 million streamers, taking that generously and rounding down to 6 million that's still 30.000 people with over 100 hours of video stored
if even a fraction of that (say 100-ish) has that level of archive, it's over a $100.000 every month
so it seems to me like twitch has found an easy way to save probably several million usd a year, while affecting only a very small percentage of users
wait, Google Drive highest tier is 2TB anyway
lol
but, again, I wasn't suggesting it..
I did some napkin math based on what a few people posted they're using on Twitter of # of hours of video, and it seems that Twitch is likely to save a half a billion to 1+ billion dollars from this move easily.
One person appears to be using around 67 petabytes of storage there, which is about 2 million dollars of storage.
Gotta be others like them, and with millions of streamers on the platform, some percentage are using this loophole. Hard to predict how many, but even conservative numbers add up to hundreds of millions of dollars in storage.
That one person using 60+ petabytes... would have to download a petabyte of video per day, and then also upload them to YouTube simultaneously or buy 1+ petabytes of local storage in order to preserve their video in the next 60 days. Plus it would take time to find that storage, buy it, receive it and set it all up, upping the daily download/upload requirements in the process. If they didn't transcode most of it upscaled to 1440p or higher, YouTube will mangle the quality of 1080p uploads making it look like crap too, so they'd need to process 62+ petabytes of video in realtime. Good luck. LOL That doesn't take into account any file size, total disk space usage, or per-day total size or number of files that YouTube would rate limit someone to either.
Some people gonna lose a lot of their videos.
who has 60PB?
Yeah, what
60PiB at 8Mbps (being generous here) is 2100 years of video
I don't think anyone has streamed that much
the only way around that would be the trick where (afaik) videos uploaded (as opposed to streamed) to twitch aren't subject to bitrate limits, but even then it'd be pretty ridiculous
Sixty Petabytes of streaming for one person is unfathomable that sounds flat out wrong
yeah someone either mathed that wrong or has been keeping an uploaded archive of multiple streamers
The math was calculated but boy was it wrong
Where are people getting these numbers from? I doubt its $2m USD. Maybe retail but Twitch isn't paying retail costs for storage.
If it was 67PB, it would be easily 2 million, if not more
But 67PB is insane
60PiB a month costs 120k usd a month to store
so times 12 for a year -> over a million usd
Have to factor in multiple copies of storage, network infrastructure, more than just the hard drives themselves, maintenance, etc.
It adds up quick
though again it's likely to be 60TiB rather than PiB, which would cost a lot less but still a lot
also, those numbers are from Amazon S3 which is what twitch uses to store this data
even if Twitch gets a deal from Amazon (which people say they don't, but I think is likely), there's still the opportunity cost for Amazon
Is that the retail cost though? or the actual cost
storing 60TB of twitch vods is 60TB of storage they can't sell to someone else
Amazon still passes the margin onto their subsidiaries?
so for all intents and purposes it costs what they say it does
tbh amazon's S3 storage is so cheap I doubt they're making bank on it; I think they primarily use it as an enabler for other services
(I'm not suggesting they operate it at a loss, but that the margins on it are slimmer than other services they offer, given especially there's more competition in that space)
I wouldn't be surprised if they're operating it at a loss. It makes sense to get as many people on there as possible and then incrementally raise the prices over time as the vendor lock in hits.
there's no vendor lock-in for object storage however
So this streamer has reported that they have 22,699hrs 36m of video data on Twitch. To estimate the numerics on this, I will make the assumption that all of this video content was live streamed at 6,000kbps which is arguably the standard bitrate that most streamers use for their live streams. All of the math can be scaled up or down from this to any other average bitrate to produce a range of possible disk usage scenarios at other bitrates if one desired. I'll simplify it to 6Mbps to make the numbers more palatable.
So, at 6Mbps, one hour of video would be 6 * 60 * 60 megabits per hour = 21,600 Mbph. Dividing that by 8 to convert from megabits per hour to megabytes per hour we get: 21600/8 = 2,700 megabytes per hour.
I will round off the number of hours they stated to the nearest hour for simplicity giving 22700hours of video. Multiply that by 2,700MB/h and you get: 22700 * 2700 = 61,290,000 MB of total data. Divide this by 1024 gives 59,853.515625 terabytes of data, and divide that by 1024 gives 58.4506988525390625 petabytes of data total.
If you then divide the total amount of data by the approximately 58 days that they have remaining until Twitch deletes the data it works out to 1.007770669871363146551724137931 petabytes of data per day that they would have to download locally and store, requiring over 60PB of storage (remembering that not all space on a hard disk is usable due to filesystem overhead). They would also need a massive server to hold all the data. It would take time to requisition the hardware and build such a storage array, which would delay being able to initiate the preservation, and increase the daily downloading and processing requirements accordingly.
There's my "bad napkin math", feel free to improve it.. π
there are hundreds of object storage providers, most of which S3-compatible meaning they're drop-in services
yeah that person has 60-ish TiB of storage, not PiB
I didn't calculate what the network bandwidth requirements would be for downloading yet, nor how an ISP would respond to having that much data pass through their network on an "unlimited" plan. π
I think it really depends on what you're doing with it. Once you're an enterprise and you're using a specific service provider it gets harder to switch over time. Maybe if you're using it for just storage but that seems to rarely be the case.
yeah the vendor lock-in comes from the other stuff, not the object storage
No, I converted kbps to Mbps first, that is petabytes, not terabytes
Yeah but that's what I'm talking about it being used as a loss leader to get people on there and locked in
Once you're already using a platform for one thing it makes sense to start using it for other stuff too
I will round off the number of hours they stated to the nearest hour for simplicity giving 22700hours of video. Multiply that by 2,700MB/h and you get: 22700 * 2700 = 61,290,000 MB of total data. Divide this by 1024 gives 59,853.515625 terabytes of data, and divide that by 1024 gives 58.4506988525390625 petabytes of data total.
you forgot a step
namely, gigabytes
61,290,000 MB / 1024 = 59853.515 GiB / 1024 = 58.450 TiB
Is there any additional lossless compression you can do on video data encoded in formats like H.264 and H.265 if you have a huge data set of similar content? Because I know small scale there's really nothing to gain but over hundreds of gigabytes of content there has to be more similarities? Unless there's just too much randomness/noise introduced.
One sec, let me go through it again to double check...
the quote is the bit where you went wrong, the rest is fine
you went MB -> TB -> PB, skipping GB
Oh crap, you're right, I just noticed. LOL
btw there's also a significant digits problem, because your numbers are too precise :P
58.4506988525390625 * 1000^5 58450698852539062.5000000000000000
half bits
Ok, I get 58.4506988525390625 terabytes now, which is a lot but is feasible at least. I downloaded around 6TB of data in a week about a year and a half ago and that wasn't full bore, spread throughout the week. So it could be possible to download that much data on high speed Internet throughout 2 months and convert it afterall.
Well, this is why it's good to publish work so it can be verified. π
it's feasible to do yeah, though for this size of archive 2 months is admittedly a bit tight
It would still be a tremendous amount of work, but it is not difficult to download 1+TB of data per day on a good modern Internet connection. An ISP may not be fond of it though depending on the provider and plan.
But then they'd have to either straight upload, or convert and upload it on the fly too, or buy probably around 70-80TB of storage to hold it.
(due to power of 10 versus power of 1024 math, and OS filesystem overhead)
HDDs are sold with power of 10, while traditional computing numbers are power of 1024
The whole MB vs MiB nonsense π
the number in my wolfram alpha screenshot is in base-10
One could custom format the drives with HUGE block sizes though to recover a lot of the usual overhead to make more efficient use of the disk space though.
of course that's assuming this streamer was a twitch guidelines streamer, at 6Mbps
For massive files it makes sense to use the largest possible blocksize.
which given they were doing the "highlight all the vods" trick I doubt they were
Also if it was Linux, you could compute the number of files and specify the max number of inodes to further reduce overhead.
so more realistically I think they're dealing with this
Right, that's the assumption I made also. If it is incorrect the worst case would be scaling all the math by 1.33
I got 77.739429473876953125 from that
Not sure what the disk overhead is on NTFS default format, but for data like this I would totally custom format it.
But I'd actually do it in Linux to control it further. π
Another factor is with that many disks, the chances of a bad disk get higher, so one would probably want to use RAID 5 or 6 with 6-8 drives in each array to avoid data loss.
So additional storage would need to make up for the redundancies.
Can you imagine being tasked to pull off a preservation like this within the time constraints? π
given enough budget I could do it
$3000CAD for the storage should more than cover it I think, but still a lot of unexpected expenditure if one was in that situation.
Not counting storage space for file conversion to retain max quality on YouTube (preserving the originals)
dead server...
A lot had been said in the four years you've been here, but haven't said a word. LOL
I.. how do you classify a dead server?
π€·ββοΈ
well it's easy
you just say "dead chat" and then a bunch of people come to say that you're talking shit
Ded server
so then you've achieved your goal of making people talk
Which I am still in and don't really know why
I'm in a few like that
thats what i just did lol
yall does changing the fractional fps actually work and make ur fps 240 if i wanted it to be?
What a boring way to start a boring conversation
Yes
Is it almost bedtime there?
About to hit 1am, was doing final skim before sleep
π
Dang. It's nearly 9am here. Cracked my redbull at 515. Feel like I need a coffee
Good Morning Everyone
Iβve already had my Welches grape ghost. Now itβs time to heat up a TheraFlu.
man skipped gigaflu and went straight to tera
I hope you feel better soon
I've just brewed my coffee. Looks like another day of beefing up a bash script so much it really ought to be a service.
Guys question if you had to choose a world to be a part off would it be the infinite warfare world or Walking dead world
Why would I ever not choose infinite warfare
I think the stench alone could kill people in the walking dead
Hot corpses walking around in the summer? Holy fuck
ROFL, agreed. Maybe if I lived in a perpetually frozen area, but that presents its own extreme survival challenges
Yea. This seems like it would be better as a zombie esqu world a vs zombie esqu world b
Otherwise it is indeed a no brainer
Hmmm
π€£
Like walking dead world vs world War z world
WWZ = good luck
Those zombies in world War z are.dicks
Well itβll be worse than WW2
True, but there's an actual government that can still protect, no?
I'm only going off the movies
They scream like hell too
28 days/weeks later vs world war z
Well sure but itβs one planet vs the other
Pick your poison
The movie only scratches the surface on how shit things get
The book goes harder
Wait I mean Cod Infinite warfare
I should really get to reading that

The short answer would be "no". You could use conventional compression software like 7-zip, but that'll only save 1-3%. But you could trim the unwanted bits and remove them.
You're gonna wanna update 7-zip if you use it, btw

Randomly, it's pretty funny that Best Buy has a "free item with purchase" link on their 5090 pages (at least for the 5090 FE), and that free item is ... a single month of discord nitro.
next thing best buy is gonna try calling you kitten
ONE MONTH?
Twitch was giving three months, that I could have gotten if they didn't fuck up the details...
one.. month...
it's a scamβ’οΈ
two months
`There are much cheaper ways to start a fire in your house than buying a 5090. π
can anyone recommend a place to find some desktop wallpapers?
If you want to use photos for wallpapers, browse Flickr.
Wallpaper Engine, if you want really fancy wallpapers.
I steal all of @prisma dove s photos LOL
The dogs, seeing the price on the gas pump...
"well shit, no treats for us"
tosses them some pumpkin
https://www.simonstalenhag.se/
I have made my wallpapers out of Simon's work for many years now
i know Twitch says in its rules to not display other websites chats on screen...
...but has anyone actually ever gotten in trouble for it yet?
Only ones they'd look at are the top .01%
Honestly they have to have a wide reaching ToS
So it does help with those actually making them money I suppose
Rule must have been born out of some kind of event or problem they were looking to fix though
"Warning: Contents of this cup may be HOT!"
after this 100hr crap im sayin fuck it
Are you part of the affected 0.5% of users or whatever
I quit using it for that when they stopped archiving VODs
Sucks but they don't want to be YouTube
yeah the writing should have been on the wall
but i myself included didnt see it
the only thing Twitch offers superior are stuff like channel points and emotes anyway lmfao
I would say the main thing Twitch offers is an actual audience and some discoverability
If you've already got an audience and you can bring them with you somewhere else then that works but otherwise, eh
I am excited for this. Three freaking years waiting since this content came out for new gen consoles almost.
I 76%'d the game and got sidetracked. I need to get back in and finish it off.
Oh boy, anticheat. Another game on the "needs more setup to capture" list

Thank's mate
it's a scam btw π
yeah you can, just not in the same tab
plop 15 in there, and 15 in another tab, it's just 15 in queue max
ohhh, interesting
thanks
I never knew
that's so funny that you can just open a new tab
Echo with the life hacks FTW
sadly it loses file ordering for sequentially named uploas, but youtube seems to fuck that up anyway at random so i dunno
yeah, trying it now and it seems to work fine. although all my files in the other tab are staying on 0%, I'm guessing until some more bandwidth frees up
and yeah Youtube Studio is an absolute disaster and things like ordering are a mystery to me anyway
like you'll add something to a playlist or change it from unlisted to published and suddenly Youtube Studio will be like "ok now it goes to the top of the list for no reason"
but not always
yeah playlists are a free for all of mess π it's insane when my stuff is uploaded in sequential order
IIRC CommanderRoot has a tool that just
does all this work for you
(if it's still on twitch)
ah, this is different, I'm not directly moving stuff from Twitch to Youtube, I'm on a project for an esports tournament I help run to fill gaps in the youtube archive for vods we have locally
im starting to come around on kingdom come 2, but man the UI really needs fixing on console
Can i have a moderator?
What for?
A random user friend requested from me on here.

whadidido
i had a random user from this server who disguised themselves as a twitch streamer trying to sell a scam promotion service.
its kind of gross that theres no way to protect users of the community from this type of thing, leaving it up to discord who typically doesnt care enough to do anything about it ime

it's unfortunate but ultimately it is up to discord
in a public server this big it's impossible to deal with otherwise
idk, ive been in servers this big and bigger with ticket tools and ways to actually report it and remove bad faith users.
yeah but then you get people faking screenshots to get someone else banned
since the only ones who can have any idea about dms is discord, that's who should deal with it
and discord itself doesnt care enough.
and you have random users like boneshooter who make it more frustrating by just using !report
Β―_(γ)_/Β―
What rule of this community did the account violate? Most moderators don't want to do Discord's job of policing your DM's and friend requests. That's between you and the other user.
Besides, kicking them from the server does nothing to punish the account in question. Reporting it to Discord adds it to their list of data, including login/account information, public IP connections, and any other things they can use to see patterns.
it would be an individuals responsibility to protect themselves against this type of thing, this is a public server after all. you can disable DMs in specific servers as well as just in general.
My intention was not to make things more frustrating. I was using a command that provides information on how to handle this situation.
how can someone know who typed a bot command?
be fast
yeah, and from seeing it before the bot deletes it

Today I learned that awk can do floating point math. I had no idea it could do that. (Don't dwell on why I needed this. I'm trying not to.)
duuuude
I was searching for the name and release date of my laptop and came across an old review/test report from 2020. I knew the display in my laptop was bad, but I had no idea it was THIS bad!! Sad thing is, I'm quite happy with this laptop, except for the screen. It's awful
In comparison, my cheap 2nd monitor from 2015 (as well as my main) reportedly scores 100% in third party tests
ok
Is this overkill? I dunno...
yes
unless you are a dog
in which case I'm extremely impressed at your language skills
overkill for a dog too
Reminds me when I saw an extreeemly expensive pair of headphones for sale on a website boasting a frequency response range of 5hz - 75,000hz
doggo headphones
People argue that anything higher res than 8k is useless because one canβt tell the difference. But at least every additional pixel still is technically able to be perceived and has an effect on the image. But no matter how life changing and cool a piece of music is, if it is in that extreme high frequency range it is literally impossible to perceive
And no they were not actually βdog headphonesβ
gotta love audiophile stuff, i just want a cheap pair of headphones that dont sound like ass , how hard can it be?
Thatβs like a TV that has such a wide gamut or color spectrum that it goes well into infared and ultraviolet. Wanna watch Oppenheimer with IR and UV colors? Oh cool it looks exactly the same.
sony has one that does upto 120khz
costs like $2k
Wow thatβs really cheap compared to the 75khz one I saw
i dont think i can hear past 15khz, so what would i do with the other 105khz
Mine aren't anywhere near that.
fairly certain a lot of headphones can do well past the rated frequency, just it may not be "as good"
I know my headphones said 50khz as the top, but I recorded with my microphone, and it did pick up 96khz (very, very, VERY faintly)
so, who knows if like the Sony 120khz ones are actually better than a headphone that only rates for like 30khz...
Sony seems to like to boast ridiculously high frequencies, so they are gonna put it on the spec sheet.. the ~$400 ones are rated for.. is it 80khz?
and the 96khz being picked up very faintly was probably the microphone's fault more than the headphone's.. I would guess
interestingly, a higher quality microphone I have now really only picks up to like... 30khz? but that is... more than enough
I always wondered what my cat was hearing that I can't, guess I need a good mic
You'd need to use a 192kHz+ sample rate to actually pick that up however, and a DAC that can convert it and speakers that can output it to actually emit the audio though.
a lot of audio interfaces can do 192khz, yeah
Well I don't need to worry about emitting the audio as I can't hear it xd
But the sony headphones should do
of course, there's the nyquist frequency.. but I think that just means there's less accuracy past a certain point
like only 0-20khz is accurate with a 44.1khz sample rate
but you do have 22050hz of frequencies
Yes, with Nyquist Theorem you need 2x+ sample frequency
fancy sounding words
It is not about accuracy past a certain point. For a digital signal, it can reproduce frequencies up to the nyquist frequency perfectly, which is half the sample rate. Anything above that is either lost through band-limiting, or introduces aliasing artifacts that fold back into the lower frequencies.
then why did they do 44.1khz sample rate
I thought the goal was to just get 20khz of accurate frequencies
Because no band limiter is perfect and they all have some amount of rolloff
The extra sample rate provides the headroom needed for that
Honestly that's one of those "okie so might not quite understand why but analog stuffs is messy so that's prolly why yes" things
so ya do sample more often than what would be strictly necessary (as it would be if ya think of it in a digital way, at least) to account for analog mess

In an ideal world, you'd have a low pass filter that cuts off at exactly 20kHz, and then you would only need 40kHz to represent everything up to that perfectly. In practice, every filter has a transition band, so if you cut everything completely above 20kHz, you will also have some amount of frequencies below that being attenuated.
yup, in an ideal world, but nothing is ideal so it's much easier to go with "okie let's just store more data than would be strictly necessary if everything was perfect"
who ping
sure i understand that yep
Interesting, Iβm not sure I understand everything, but I always thought the reason 44khz and 48khz sample rates were the standard, was to support those with super-human hearing. In case your hearing went slightly beyond 20khz.
And in turn I wondered why the standards werenβt just designed to top out at like, 18khz or something to save on cost and bandwidth. Most people I know canβt hear beyond 18khz
I can't hear beyond 12-14 ._.
from what I am reading, in order to properly capture 20hz-20khz range, you need to have the higher frequency window of 44+ khz.
There is also sampling and reprocessing to take into consideration when it comes to editing or real-time effects processing
@sudden adder With this lighting, it looks like you were punched in the eye.
punched by content
comes from this image. and yes, I am activly screaming into my hand to make all of my characters react via the Scale 2 Sound plugin
I have also heard that modern codecs/encoders like AAC and OPUS outright ignore anything above 14khz unless they are provided a significant amount of bandwidth or encounter significant amounts of noise in those ranges
I sometimes wonder what its like to be a dog or cat in a human world. Due to me needing to watch out for my hearing I downloaded a few apps, and in turn discovered that a lot of appliances produce constant noise around 20khz, give or take a few kHz.
I imagine itβs like walking into a television store in the 90βs - 00βs, with a constant CRT whine from all the television sets. Although Iβm too young to know what thatβs like.
I'm not
the high frequency noise that CRTs produced was audible (to younger people) but not really annoying or anything
Interesting. I always thought it was like hell for the young ones.
nah, it's high-pitched but not very loud
in high school, i could easily tell when the home room TV would turn on without having to even see it. The buzz was so subtle, barely anyone else noticed it. It was more of a feeling than a sound almost
(the tvs auto-activated when Channel 1 programming started in the mornings)
Same, I imagine it's not very fun and there's people who purposely use machines that make noises to scare animals that can hear them without any human hearing it
yep, ultrasonic pest repellers
I know those as ultrasonic youth repellers
The spec for some codecs specify a lower cutoff frequency for really low bandwidth encodes, but at the bitrates used in normal circumstances, most go to at least 18kHz, and frequently 20kHz+ (and sometimes it depends on the specific encoder, as well)
worst of it was CRT in an enclosure and you wanted to hook something up while it was still on
my parents could hear a muted tv in another room at night, perhaps the intensity of noise could be related to the model
walking into a store that sold tvs? might've been plasma on display around that time... when Saturn was out but not the N64
why Saturn but not N64?
Saturn pre-dates the N64 by about a year or two
i dont remember many plasma TVs around in 1994-1996 to be honest
Plasma TVs in 2000 were like $10,000
So def no plasmas on major display mid 90s
I remember my roommate buying a 42" plasma in like 2006 for $2000
π
perhaps I went to sears in 2002
... I'm not sure, swore I witnessed plasma tvs in stores before 9/11
my elders probably have a better grasp on the concept of money at that time and paid attention
to help ground myself in the time period I look back at my hobbies
95/96 I was introduced to magic the gathering, ice age booster boxes were still in the card shop.
walmart didn't open up near us until unglued was out (98).. at my location target, bestbuy, circuit city didn't exist so that just leaves kmart, sears, I did play a wario game in a Toys R Us on the virtual boy which is around that time period too
but walking into a dark section of a department store and looking at this huge flat panel.. had to be plasma but since nothing else of note happened I can't put a date on it
looking at a sega console in a glass case none of my friends in town had was a mystery, I believe to be the saturn and not the segacd
Now I'm remembering Ice Age. Not the best set but I liked it. Fun art.

I mean, I enjoy a tiny little space heater.
Usually my space heaters aren't very good at rapidly jamming out polygons anyway
does your heater catch fire tho?
This well known smart person says its a vrm failure
So, ONCE, the very first PC I ever built for myself as a kid (I was 17?) it was like 1997...it did NOT have sufficient fans in it and the fans were cheap and basically all died. The PC naturally started overheating then power-cycling to recover from it. I pulled the case off of it and the frame had begun to bend and warp from heat damage
I couldn't get the case back on (this was still the days of those gross off-white cases, solid metal covers that fit like a partial shoebox cover) so I set my box fan next to it and the thing had never run faster.
Lessons learned.
I always go WAY overboard on cooling now.
...to answer your question, it did not catch fire
according to Technology Connections, many small space heaters actually have a sensor that turns it off it it gets too hot, but also keep the sensor warm so it doesnt cool off and turn back on

the biggest safety feature of the 5090 is the price
I lol'd, ty for that haha
Chimkin. Nice and fried. Lettuce lookin' good too. Looks like a Caesar salad under there. Nice.
Yeah, feeling $2.7k is a bit high, when I paid $1.7k for the same model of 4090.
I wish my apartment payments were lower. :/
I'd love to have a 2br/ba for less than $1.7k in Bozeman.
I have a 3br/ 3 1/2 ba on 2 acres for $1270 - coastal NC π
I have an 18 month lease. Will look for someplace cheaper to live I can transfer to then.
I pay more than this for my studio :(
Honestly - it's why I live where I do. Used to drive an hour to work but not having to live in that chaos is WONDERFUL
Heh yeah Iβll be paying $1300/mo for a 2 bedroom and it is a pretty nice areaβ¦I think the midwestern prices are just amazing tbh
My per month is a bit different south of Boston. I wish I was paying 1300/mn that's awesome
Boston and surrounding is STUPID expensive
My BIL lives in Boston
Even 14 years ago, he had a 2br/1ba that he had a roommate. They each paid $2000/month
I think that was in Dorchester
Jeebus, that's bad.
Yea, Boston real estate is NUTS
Selling this place is my retirement plan. In this economy nothing else will work for that π€ͺ
