In OBS Studio 30+, Intel QuickSync (QSV) is only guaranteed to work with Broadwell or newer Intel CPUs. If you are having issues with QSV encoding, you can try downgrading to OBS Studio 29.1.3, which may support older CPUs.

if i need to RMA a replacement, i send it to whichever company manufactured the product. For a GPU, it would be the GPU's brand (for my Radeon it would be PowerColor). In the case of an Intel CPU, it would be Intel. That wouldnt be a refund though, since you didnt buy it directly from Intel

So, yeah, riot vanguard quite clearly still didn't update their thing, and obs 31 just released with a new signature for the game capture hook, meaning that on 31, some games like valorant or LoL can't be hooked by the game capture (or apparently GC even crashes valorant??).

symptoms are :

[game-capture: 'Valo'] attempting to hook fullscreen process: VALORANT-Win64-Shipping.exe
[game-capture: 'Valo'] using helper (compatibility hook)
[game-capture: 'Valo'] hook not loaded yet, retrying..

if it's smth else than hook not loaded yet, retrying.., à priori it's not that.
solution is to delete the new hook files, and then reinstall 30.2.3

I think a good example is when there was a very short time where users had to use 24.0.3 (i think) to game capture minecraft....because of the "training through support" that happened there, it was common even up until recently for users to install that old version thinking it was the fix.

Yeah, I've seen people dox theselves, as well as leak text files loaded with Steam game keys for giveaways, private messages on Discord or toast notifications on live stream all because they were using Display Capture. Sadly I think most people don't realize these potential dangers. When I use DC myself, I do it on a secondary display with no taskbar, icons or other things showing, and no other apps on same display as well, which mitigates a number of the risks.

Sometimes it is the only way to capture things though.

I would really like to know why sometimes when I put my pc to sleep instead of doing that, it lingers in some sort of half-off state where the fans are running (faster than normal) and it's unresponsive until I flick the power switch on the psu off and back on again

Unlike laptops where suspend/sleep etc. are used all the time, PC BIOSs have traditionally been much buggier in implementing that stuff as less people use it I surmise, and they don't find and fix the bugs/problems as much as they do on laptops. I've had nothing but annoying problems and instability over time on many machines trying to use suspend etc, so now I disable all that stuff on any new Windows install.

Might want to check for BIOS updates tho if you haven't already

There's the whole "suspend" <passage of time> "resume" while an app is keeping track of the passage of time with some mechanism, but not keeping track of suspend/resume, so if 10 hours went by, does it count that, or does it treat it like 0?

I did learn a few things though, like leap years aren't every 4 years.

They're every 4 years except on centuries, except on centuries divisible by 400.

So, 1900, 2100 aren't leap years but 2000 was. Because lets make things complicated. 🙂

Yeah for sure. I mean, even at the peak of it's badness when it was railed on the most by gamers, it still got a 76% positive rating on Steam, so it was still a good but buggy game then. I've seen games that got less complaints land at like 30% rating on Steam post launch. 🙂 So once they got several of the major patches it took a positive turn, but then 2.0 sealed the deal, and 2.1 put a cherry on top. 😛

They wont have the sequel likely until 2027 or 2028 which is 4-5 years, so I've suspected that from time to time they might drop a new patch with some new content, features, weapons/vehicles, maybe new apartments, few new missions here and there. They are also doing a new TV series so will likely want to drop series swag for cross promotion in the future too, so I suspect there will be a 2.3. They've also spoke of wanting to do full motion picture without any more details than that, so if they drop a movie in the future I imagine we'll get a movie swag cross promotion update too. Time will tell though.

Each time they do things like that, the game soars to the top of Steam bestsellers for a few weeks, and the game surges in popularity into top 5-20 games for a while, padding out their financial quarter handsomely 🙂

Though I suppose it would be worth padding the instructions with "pester the anti cheat developers about this".

In the process of building a 3950x on an itx rog-strix board as a file server (gonna eco-mode, undervolt, etc) using a Noctua NH-L12Sx77 in an old silverstone case. I've been modding the case but everything fits now. That tiny little air-cooler is pretty impressive.

Got a be quiet air-cooler on my 5950x as well. I'm more of a productivity person than a gamer so the simplicity suits.

With Microsoft "buying out" Nuance there may be some improvements in the near future. Nuance and their Dragon Speech engine and lexicon are the primary voice recognition application for medical services. They have adaptive speech recognition along with regional dialect algorithms. I've seen it do amazing things with multiple users that have vastly different accents. Not only does it do speech recognition but does an analysis of corrections made by the user so it can improve the recognition instead of just using a "baseline"

Went on a tandem jump once, years ago. My anxiety can't handle it now.

I was curious how they got a 3070 to only draw 9w, I know I can get mine to report 13w in hwinfo however.. reality is more like 'your total system power without a dGPU can be as low as 20w idle, but with a dGPU plugged in it's like 57w' quite a bit more than their measurement. I have gpu-z open and see that it's reporting x16 1.1 in its idle state, and I followed some instructions on how people got their Arc cards to idle for less but I don't know if those reports have an physical meter running vs hwinfo
