They make all kinds of prototype hardware to test limits and stuff, and probably 4-8 different configurations of each model to figure out the best profitable way to go, but just because they make prototypes like that doesn't mean they ever intend for them to be sold on store shelves. They can also purposefully put specs in prototypes that are different from what they plan to release so that people do not leak the actual real product.

Years ago in like 2002-2003 or so before AMD64 architecture was officially released, about a year before, I got an AMD Clawhammer prototype in an AMD Solo system. It was 800MHz. I still have it. AMD sent me a final silicon update at 1.6GHz, but the actual chips shipped to market at 1.8GHz.
So just because "some guy" has hardware before everyone else doesn't ever mean that what they have is what the company is going to ship to consumers.

I think CPU frequency is one of the least intersting elements of the performance of a CPU for over a decade. We had 4GHz CPUs over a decade ago, and a few that went above 5, and then more that were in the 3-4 range ever since, and now once again some in the 5-6+ range, but in clock speed alone it doesn't represent any major performance increase over a 10 year period of time. If it doubled to 10GHz it would only be twice as fast as they are now, and it would be a tremendous technical feat to pull that off stable without LN2 or whatever. At the same time countless other architectural changes have greatly increased both the single and multi-thread performance of CPUs far more in the last 10 years than the clock speed has. And now we're seeing the addition of other forms of accelerators becoming the norm to advance computing in other ways.
So yeah, clock speed is pretty uninteresting overall IMHO

I was working on a project recently and the funding I had was VERY tight. I basically knew this would be a financial faliure before i even started. So I went with the thought process that this would be my "exit" or "retirment" and just do it " 1 more time" and for almost a year I really was thinking like this
Then I did the thing and I exceeded all execations, except the financial one of course. The financial stuff is not my current worry, but the reception I got from everyone. Imagine your hero's telling you, you did something very very very few people could ever do and they tell you that you inspired them

Still haven't seen any solid info on whether 9950X3D will have dual-X3D or not. Technically it makes total sense to have it this time, but who knows what AMD will do. It'll raise the cost of the chip but IMHO it'll be worth it to pay more if it has that. There are rumours it has it and rumours it doesn't and no useful benchmarks or other info to back it up unfortunately, at least that I've seen so far. I hope that someone leaks more substantive info on it than Factorio benchmarks soon.

I assume AMD doesn't want to put out a mega-overkill product like that, spend wafers of cache and manufacturing effort on them, and possibly get mixed or negative reviews to boot.
Then again, intel 12900KS is kind of a meme and exists. But just because Intel has a meme product doesn't mean AMD has to or should want to. Just my thoughts.

3D vcache as a feature marketed to consumers is marketed as a gaming feature because it does greatly improve gaming performance and it is the single best use case for the broader market. Existing games are mostly targetted towards 8 or less cores with or without hyperthreadin due to history and game developers not having huge incentives to parallelize their code further, but that is slowly changing and will continue to change as we go forward into the future and higher core counts become more and more available.
It is however a huge mistake to conclude that due to gaming being the primary way these CPUs are marketed, that gaming is the only type of software that benefits from an increase in L3 cache. Software development is another area that benefits from higher L3 cache, as do various server workloads and various other applications. Any software that is constrained by memory latency stands to benefit from higher L3 cache being present, and that is not limited to applications that only can utilize 8 or fewer cores.
With Zen 4 AMD limited the 16-core chips to only have one X3D enhanced die because a lot of non-gaming applications benefit more from more cores running at full clock rather than with X3D at a lower clock, so putting dual-X3D would only benefit some apps but at the expense of lowering overall multi-thread performance, so their decision to ship with only a single X3D CCD on the 12 and 16 core units made a lot of sense both from a business and technical perspective.
With Zen 5 and the redesigned X3D v2 however that changes, because the primary drawback of lower clock speeds on X3D enabled CCDs impacting multithreaded performance negatively is not only greatly reduced, but in fact flips around with many applications now, giving performance gains in a wide variety of apps that are not video games.
Look at benchmark comparisons of a wide variety of non-gaming applications, content creation, productivity and other apps on 9700X versus 9800X3D and the performance gains vary from +5% to +20% or more on non-games. There are some that are still negatively affected by the lower clock but it is now marginally lower. Only apps that are likely to be affected are those that are totally CPU bound and not memory latency affected at all.
The take home from these revelations is that the reasons why AMD chose to only X3D enable one CCD on Zen 4 no longer are true on Zen 5 and it is now beneficial to enable it on both CCDs, improving both gaming and NON-gaming application performance.
So "games wont need more than 8 cores in 2024" isn't a great technical argument against AMD having X3D on both CCDs of the 12 and 16 core chips. I'd say it is a completely irrelevant observation. 🙂
Putting X3D on both chiplets probably raises the cost by $50, but raises the performance by 10-20% on that 2nd CCD also, and I think many people would happily pay an extra $50-100 to have that performance gain and a symmetrical chip, and not have to be forced to use Xbox gamebar or other hacks to constrain games to a single CCD.
Lots of people out there want it for non-gaming now, especially after seeing non-gaming results on 9800X3D. I think AMD is completely off their rocker if they do not put it on both CCDs.
And I think all the tech outlets will call them that in some words or another if they don't have dual-X3D for the reasons I cited. They're throwing away performance to not have it, and if they put it on there, the 9950X3D is likely to get insane rave reviews as the fastest chip in the universe blah blah blah even if they charge a lot more for it.
