I've got about 15 OBS installs all in parallel, starting with 26.x, including 27.x, 28.x, 29.x, 30.x. I can't imagine the brokenness that would transpire if they all shared configs etc.

I use 1-3 copies of OBS simultaneously for different purposes with this setup. Works smooth as silk.

The complexity of my setup would probably give most people a heart attack mind you. LOL

They all have their own private configuration (profiles, scene collection), but data assets are stored separately in C:\OBS{data,scripts,shaders,LUTs} which are used/shared between installations.

They all run in portable mode otherwise they would have configuration collision. There is some collision already however due to C:\ProgramData\obs-studio being shared across versions and things like Elgato Stream Deck and StreamFX installing plugins in there. Newer versions of OBS have disabled this directory in portable mode to avoid that problem, but I have to deal with it still on older releases. So I manually manage that directory myself.

Logitech likes to spam OBS with broken plugins too.

So for YouTube, I am using the current OBS directly by itself, which has no fancy filters/fx etc. and I use it privately to share my game/screen etc. in a private conversation with people to demonstrate something or whatever, so the current OBS works best for that due to supporting the latest cool things YouTube supports (HEVC+AV1 etc.)

For local recording situations I have several OBS setups across various releases to use the features I need. That is just for local recording and/or development, and a lot of it is legacy stuff that slowly is getting migrated forward.

For streaming more rich content with VFX etc. it is a complex mess. LOL I run the latest OBS to encode and broadcast+record, but most of the scene layout/vfx etc. is done in OBS 27.x and/or 26.x and piped to the current release via NDI.

It was a matter of having to make compromises and tradeoffs, and finding the tradeoffs that best aligned with solving the problems I cared the most about.

It came about for many reasons, but the TL;DR is I had a complex setup that evolved and got more complex up until 26.x, with over 1000 scenes. 27.x happened and the change from linear RGB to sRGB broke most of my visual FX and color processing, so I could not switch to it right away without adapting all of my stuff to assume sRGB by default which I still have not completely adjusted to. In addition there have been some changes to how alpha channel is handled which caused me some problems in the past and I have to re-evaluate that with the current release some time in the future.

I have to manually install plugins in each release separately.

Each has its own scene collections so I don't have a problem there.

I only pipe to a newer OBS via spout/whatever if I need newer platform support or codec support or similar.

Future goal is to migrate the rest of my 26.x FX/etc. to work with 27.x and newer releases by converting all my FX to LUA scripts instead of plain shaders and complex OBS configurations.

From LUA I can see what version of OBS it is running in and Do The Right Thing. So any new things I write are compatible with new OBS but also with my current setup running on old OBS.

Eventually I'll have everything converted like this, and it should all run under current OBS.

Plus be way simpler and more robust with far far less scenes and scene complexity.

There are a tonne of new plugins and updated plugins out there now that I have not yet dug into too, many of which will simplify the setup further as well.

Another thing that held me back for a while but is now workaroundable is a lot of my setup relies heavily on StreamFX, which for a long time there was no stable solution for OBS 28.x+, however that is not the case anymore, and I should be able to evolve the setup to newer stuff.

Yeah, I haven't done much coding or messing around with stuff for over a year now, but I do tinker a bit on occasion still, and am eager to dive back in one of these days. Music and other hobbies have kind of taken over for a while. 🙂

I do really want to recreate as many of my old FX and stuff as standalone LUA scripts and/or shaders though. It's going to take a lot of work mind you.

You can load shaders via LUA pretty much the same as OBS Shaderfilter.

Shaderfilter shaders can be used directly if the LUA is written to use its conventions. But I usually then change it to make better use of what can be done in LUA.

One thing I have not yet done but want to play with is multi-pass shaders in LUA. That will allow me to replace a tonne of old FX and complexity, as well as allow me to convert a crapload of Shadertoy multi-pass shaders to OBS.

One might think "why not make them native plugins?" and I did consider that also, but I've decided to lean on LUA for anything that can be done in it as there is less chance of ABI changes in OBS breeaking a LUA script, and they should in theory work across platform without needing to be compiled per platform.

Coding in LUA, the workflow is simpler but for anything I've done so far I have not ran into a "you can't do that in OBS in LUA" situation roadblock. 🙂

Only downside is having to manually load the scripts before use, which is fine by me although not as user friendly as a plugin, but then they're by me for me so... 😛

A few years ago I set up an OBS build environment and got it running fine, but the next time I set it up I couldn't get it to work as it was a new OBS release, couldn't get the Visual Studio version it needed anymore without a Microsoft login, and my MS account got disabled for unknown reasons and I was angry at Microsoft so I refused to bother with Visual Studio.

One of the reasons I prefer open source software is to get away from proprietary vendor lockin crap like that, so I wasn't fond of having to use Microsoft to do development and abandoned the effort for the time.

Eventually I got a copy of VS but was still hesitant to use it for the above reasons. I'm still up in the air about it. I'd very much prefer to use a pure GNU/LLVM setup instead, but I don't think it is possible to develop for OBS that way right now so my attention turned elsewhere.

I don't use OBS in Linux or I'd attempt stuff in Linux instead.

So LUA is the best solution for my personal use case to have my cake and eat it too. 😛

the lastest email will display in fullsize and the futher back you go in that email chains history of replies, the display gets narrower and narrower until literally only 1 character can show

Most email clients quote text by adding a vertical bar | at the start of every line of the reply. If someone replies to that, that reply also gets it, so there are increasing numbers of vertical bars stacking on each subsequent reply, which will eventually cause the text to max out at whatever the mail reader's right margin is set to (which may not be configurable). If this is the case, it's just the way it works. It's a good habit for people who reply to trim off any unnecessary reply quotes to maintain relevant context, which in turn can reduce the amount of reply quote spam in the messages, but most people don't bother with that in 2024.

The bad practice of top-quoting pretty much encouraged laziness like that. 🙂

The larger problem IMHO, is that this is all subjective and up to individual software and people to create such conventions, so there is no real standard other than defacto conventions that have been mauled by software over decades. If email wasn't so free form and instead had a specific structure imposed on it by some protocol like other forms of communication have, then the chronological order of messages and replies would be retained in that structure and it could theoretically be up to a given software client on how to display the information or even give the user choices on how to do so. Some mail clients might have advanced options on how to interpret and display all of the "| | | blah blah" too, but I haven't really seen much in lines of that.

But even if a client did have the option, everyone else's client might not or might not be configured the same way, so it's just really a limitation of are aged email system.

I think if email didn't exist already, and someone were to invent it in 2024, it would be more structured and probably use XML or something or some other DTD, and solve these problems a different way that would have it work the same at the protocol/document level but differently at the client display level, allowing preferences to choose preferred way of seeing things.

Well, technically email is 7-bit and a horizontal line does not exist in ASCII. There is the dash, but that is commonly used in text so it would not be a unique identifier for a reply quote. Also there are already conventions in common use for certain usage of the dash such as the signature delineator i mentioned earlier. Some mail clients might allow configuration of how the reply quoting appears however, either in color or by using ">" instead of "|", which was also common back in the day.

Just out of curiosity, I'm going to surf through gmail settings to see if Google even exposes any configuration of this.

The audio I used did have some silence in it that it split on, however I undid that and used the noise gate to mute anything below -40dB just as a test, and it splits on that also. If you're not getting the same results, then you might want to consider asking for help in Audacity's forums/Discord etc.

Another possibility is if there is any DC bias in the audio.

Not sure if Audacity can remove that or not, but it probably can.

I found an option buried in settings of the old version to rearrange the effects menu, I changed it and the program crashed, then when it started up it fired off like 300 dialog errors, so I thought maybe it's time to upgrade it.

so in regards to my email question yesterday. Now that I added the client as a CC and they saw the email chat history, things are now moving super fast with their agent. If I want to remove the client and just have it so its like before with just me and the agent in the email chain...I can put the client in BCC and say something like "I put xxx in BCC, thank you for your help. We can do the rest on our own" ??

this way the client knows that I removed him and thanked him for it and can contiune on with the agent like before?

Man, it seems like I just built my new PC recently but it was over 2 years ago, and I'm wanting to build a new one already. 🙂 It's unusual for me to build new systems that often. I wonder what an average lifecycle is for people in general.

Well, the main PC is dead at the moment pending a gutting and hardware shift, BIOS flash, filesystem recovery and complete OS reinstall, and it is powerful enough for most things I do, but I've got no AI acceleration and increasingly using and wanting to use more AI tools. I've got another dead PC that just needs a new motherboard+CPU+RAM and it's ready to go, so I want to do that and fix the current one and have 2 good systems for crunching and to have a fallback if one of them dies on me again.

So I want to get either a 9950X or 9950X3D + X870E mobo, and 64-128GB DDR5-6000. As a separate buy, I want to get a high end GPU for AI/compute but will remain undecided pending next gen releases and pricing of all hardware at the time.

Well, in terms of AI, yes that would be fine. But in terms of having the 2nd system for backup...

If I do build a new system, the timeframe will likely be Jan-Mar 2025. Not in a huge rush and AI like to wait for other people to do good guinea pig testing of new hardware generations first, BIOS updates to come out etc. and prices to drop and stabilize, and I figure this timeframe will be about when that happens based on speculation for releases of Zen 5, Arrow Lake, RDNA4 and Blackwell.

Lot of variables though so things could change.

But I just ran an AI stem separator on my laptop and it took 6 minutes... gahhhh

My last PC was limping along at 14yrs. I used to build a new one every 18 months or so. Got tired of the stress of living on the edge of technology and having issues. My most recent one was an OTS. Makes life much simplier

Kept running the bunch of machines I accumulated over the years until they all more or less died one by one and were super old.

Built new PC in 2013 determined to not be stuck with old slow hardware again. Put together decent system with 32GB but mid range everything else at the best value per dollar point for the most part. Used that machine until it died, updated it a few times and it died a few years ago and is still sitting there dead.

When I built the new machine a few years ago, I was sick of slow computers and running them into the ground. I figure computers are a huge part of my life, and a tool of the trade. For the number of hours I use them for all hobbies and other interests one way or another, it was worth having something better, and being an extreme power user I didn't want to "settle" for that "best value" point anymore so I built the high end system and it has worked great up until it died. LOL

So now I'm in the mindset that I'm going to ensure I always have 2 high end systems running normally and if one dies, the other is the fallback until I feel like sorting out the down system.

Life is short, and ya can't take it all with ya.... as they say.

I use my PC for gaming, nerd stuff and work (using VPN to connect). It has served me well. I did bump up the RAM to 32GB. Running a 3060 and occasionally swap it out for an A4000. Don't really notice any difference unless I'm doing massive rendering. I'm ok with running games a "normal" settings as the monitors are older Dells at 1920x1200. Don't think my old eyes could detect anything better

Hmm, I haven't had that experience with the outlook app. It shows the emails correctly here, only thing I've had issues with is the authentication of things. Like if something needs to auth on the app it will get the authentication, you'll put in the number press accept and it will just error.

But that could also just be the service I'm trying to uses fault, 0 idea.

Yay, found another free open source AI software tool to replace something in the cloud. Intel's OpenVino AI Effects for Audacity. It has stem separation and music generation. Been using the stem separation for a day and it's pretty solid. Beats using freemium stuff in the cloud for me anyway. No "you hit your limit, please pay subscription fee" for me thanks. 🙂

Slow on my laptop, takes about 5m for a song but that's fine, I'll make a sandwich.

They have open source AI plugins for GIMP too, although I haven't installed that and tried it yet. I think it does background removal and image generation with SD or something, gotta dig it up sometime soon. Wasn't in a hurry for that one as I figured it'd be sooooo slow on my non-AI laptop that it might not be usable, but I shouldn't judge without trying it as LM Studio works and this Audacity plugin works, both slow but usable.

Would anyone know how to relink the red media back into daVinci resolve 18? Cause I’m trying but the folder that it’s in isn’t showing up on file… it’s invisible and the locate thing can’t find it either.

If it's the "Media Offline" indication, either move it back to the original location like Dread suggests, or delete it from the media pool and add it back. There may be a way to re-sync Media files, you should google "Resolve Media Offline" and see what pops up.

Doubt it. More likely something has happened to the original source files for that project. Reopening an existing project requires all the sources again.

What about the timeline why is it it's own media file?

The timeline is, but it's made up of sources. If the sources aren't available, they can't be rendered into the timeline when you open an existing project. The Resolve Project is made up of all your audio and video sources you add to the timeline. Once you render a project, the rendered file is now one new encoded file which won't require the original source clips. The Resolve Project will always require the source clips if you ever want to open it up again for new edits and renders.

Oh I get that. I can't use a Switch controller for a long amount of time, because it's difficult for my big hands to press the buttons, and my thumb starts to hurt after a while. The buttons dig into my skin. Strangely enough, I'm completely fine using my DSi XL for hours on end with no issues.
