i was under the assumption that OBS/streaming is more CPU than GPU?

#

i know you need both, i meant where most of the burden/bottleneck would be

sick cedar

depends on what you're doing. OBS does not need much if you have modern machine with GPU encoding

I'd say unless you're doing CPU encoding, then its probably more GPU heavy (even if it is not very much, if you've got basic setup)

it's significantly more GPU dependent if you're running an RTX gpu

vernal current

a streaming-only machine that focuses on using capture cards is going to be better served by server/workstation grade CPUs rather than consumer ones

the second one is a 2650v4 with 32gb in 4 sticks with 3x pci-e x16 slots

vernal current
#

thats much cheaper than i thought

hearty stirrup
#

these are cpu+mobo+ram bundles

#

for under 200usd

#

the main reason to go with this class of cpu is that you actually struggle to make your primary gpu run in x8 mode unless it's an x8 card

cunning pine
#

I don't see why it should cost more than that honestly. It's old ass tech and it's coming straight from China wholesale instead of eBay or Amazon where everyone is trying to resell them for profits. AliExpress is always usually 3 times cheaper cuz of this

left heart
open rune
#

Sounds right
Twitch has viewers but is more restrictive on settings
YT lets you go wild with settings but nobody will find you

left heart
#

so keep in mind there's whatever denoising is done in camera on that

#

and that's at 100% scale, which is... large

prisma dove
#

It's impossible to "reach" people while live unless you already have a following. On either platform. That being said, I see lots of people live streaming on YT and gaining concurrent views because they have discoverable content when they are offline. YT videos, short form content, IG, etc. A lot also depends on the content itself. IRL live content does real well on YT, if they have good marketing of discoverable content.

hearty stirrup
open rune
#

I'm sure it works, just feels weird recommending 10+ year old hardware

livid plover

That's how awful the state of consumer hardware has become if you aren't a basic system user

open rune

I mean if you're going for a super budget build and know what you're getting go nuts

#

Otherwise why wouldn't you just buy relatively normal/current hardware

full fern
hearty stirrup
#

@vernal current the core of my point is that you target the cpu/motherboard combos with high pci-e lane counts for streaming since they can install multiple capture cards, including multi-input ones, without gimping the main gpu

We mainly have red throated ones here (Coastal NC) but do get some other varieties. Normally each year we have about a dozen that keep us busy filling feeders. We also have a lot of plants they can feed from as well.

prisma dove

Hey, I have seen them in my area! I thought it looked familiar. I'm not much of a bird watcher, mostly just a picture taker when I can see them.

opaque halo

I call 'em all buzz birds. They fly to the feeders and plants, take a few drinks then right back up to the old oak tree we have in the back yard. They occasionally "fight" over a feeder but we have enough around the yard so they all get some. We also have house finches that love the taste of the sweet water ๐Ÿ™‚

prisma dove
#

I'm lucky there's a storm drainage pond at the neighborhood park. So ducks, coots, a canadian goose pair. Couple swans in the fields nearby where there's another drainage collection pond for cattle. And we have the robins, bluejays, finches, wild doves, pigeons, and a few thousand seagulls that over-night in fields north of me, then fly south over by neighborhood to the county landfill that's a few miles away. Every freaking morning.

We sprinkle peanuts, dried berries and corn on the gound for them and have baffles on the bird feeders. i hope they pass the law so any communication past 5pm is fully optional

#

#

GoodMorning we needs it

amber sparrow
#

If you are an hourly associate, you are well within your rights to not communicate with/about work when you are not on the clock
Salaried employees can be a bit different

#

Though a hard cut off 5pm sounds silly becUse not all jobs are 9-5

#

Jobs with 2nd and 3rd shift(or 24hour shifts) exist

marsh helm
#

well 5pm is just if your contract says you work from 8-5

#

it could be any time

#

part or full timer ppl

#

its a law thats moving around in cali

#

trying to make it so jobs cant force you to communicate in any hours you arnt being paid for

amber sparrow
#

That's already a thing though

#

Ask any HR rep that's worth half a shit

#

If I need something from my employees on their off time, and they care to assist, even if it's 5 minutes, I pay them for that time beyond what they spend

marsh helm
#

but hr in america is evil

civic quarry
#

i think HR is the same every where

#

but if you are not salaried, a company cannot expect you to communicate when you are not being paid.

amber sparrow
#

Sure, but they always say "if your people are on their off time, and you ask them something work related, pay them for their time"

Mainly to protect the company from unfair practices, but it also works to benefit the employee too

amber sparrow
#

Someone spends 5 minutes communicating with me about something for work, they get 30 minutes of pay. Just to make sure I'm not abusing their time

civic quarry
#

yes that law is for salaried employees

open rune
#

Haha

marsh helm
#

Assembly Bill 2751, introduced by Assemblyman Matt Haney (D-San Francisco), would create a โ€œright-to-disconnectโ€ law that guarantees workers uninterrupted personal and family time, free from calls or messages after work hours. It also mandates employers to create and publish plans to implement the new law into their policies and empower the California Labor Commissionerโ€™s Office to investigate and fine employers who habitually violate it.

open rune
#

Imagine working in IT and not taking calls outside of work hours

civic quarry

i think my companies IT department has already taken this law to heart ๐Ÿ˜„

marsh helm

open rune

You can put down overtime if you need to do some work but you can't just not pick up the phone

marsh helm

open rune

I mean you can but you'd be a piece of shit since you would have agreed to that sort of thing as part of the job

#

If you turn down the job then there's no issue lol

marsh helm

i would agree that if you contact me after hours its overtime

open rune

marsh helm
#

hell if it was spain they would all have a month vacation anyways

well in many places its 6 weeks off plus unlimited medical

#

they should just hire 2 ppl to work 12 hours shifts

#

if they want 24 hours

#

working for 24 hours is crazy

civic quarry
#

if you answer a call at 8am and answer a call at 9pm have you worked 24 hours?

open rune
#

I'm not talking about getting called at night to just like, randomly work an extra shift

#

But if a site server goes down or the site loses power and (in our case) production is affected you might need to stop and deal with that, or at least call the ISP or whatever

#

It's not a 24 hour shift and it's not something you hire an extra person for

#

It's just the job

marsh helm
#

seems like no life balance

open rune
#

I think you overestimate the frequency and amount of time involved

marsh helm

so if it happens at midnight or something

#

you just dont sleep?

open rune

I remember seeing a GN video where some prototypes of the kingpin evga cards had their power connectors on the short edge of the pcb

uneven spear
#

Same, and when some even had space for many 8x connectors, or at least a second 12-pin.

left heart
#

ah yeah, here we go:

#

I suppose you have that luxury when you use an AIO, no worries about the giant heatsink that's larger than the PCB that way

#

oh, they even had that on the 2080 ti kingpin card

#

and the 1080 ti kingpin...

uneven spear
#

Today, due to flow-trough, owo.

#

Look it up, it's more specific than that. Diagrams help, owo. "What is a flow-through area on a GPU?".

livid plover
#

and the cooler sometimes is longer than the PCB itself

left heart
#

since the PCBs are quite short nowadays, the coolers can take advantage of that empty space now

#

if you block that off with a PCB to route power, you lose that cooling

uneven spear
#

It is, but there's reasoning for it. Asus is trying to move it to the back now, where the PCIe connector is.

livid plover
#

having to do a 180 right out the "top" is kinda ass yeah

#

especially given how stiff these cables is

left heart

here, take a look at the 1080ti kingpin as an example of the old air cooler design with the side power connectors:

Cloud Chamber, thank you Y2kkmac. Look up a video of one. There's 3-4 rays per second in most of them. Any one of those could hit memory just right and flip something. Gets more likely as the individual caapacitor of each memory cell gets smaller.

open rune
#

@civic quarry What's the deal

left heart
#

if you're at sea level a lot of those are alpha particles from radon in the walls or in the ground

#

the higher in altitude you go the more of them are cosmic rays

uneven spear
#

Yes, owo.

left heart
#

but, again, it's more a function of area. so if you're going by the error rate from that one IBM paper you have to consider the same amount of memory takes up a much smaller area with what you have now

#

they're quite common

#

here's a "picture" of one

#

which isn't really a picture of a cosmic ray, it's a track of errors left behind by a cosmic ray hitting my camera sensor

#

and that rate was one in about 45 minutes of exposures on an APS-C sized sensor

#

and I wasn't very high in altitude, maybe 1800 feet or so above sea level

#

and if you want to be more accurate, it's not even the cosmic ray causing that, the cosmic ray hitting the atmosphere made a shower of other particles, one of which hit my sensor

#

no, there's plenty of radiation sources all around you

#

no, the thicker clouds are alpha particles

#

you'd need some more specific measurements to determine what they are, this is a pretty simple cloud chamber

prisma dove

I remember during my childhood that I met a large group of people with PhDs. Apparently the "light transport research" as a profession, is rather welcoming. A lot of them took the time to teach me about scientific rigor, and I'd be nowhere with video encoding without that.

By luck, it also exposed me early on to how to work with extremely precise data. We were regurarly doing stuff with 128-bit and higher images.

left heart
#

eugh, I remember some arbitrary precision stuff I accidentally strayed into. that stuff's slow

uneven spear
#

Was required. I think most of my work ended up at 256-bit, but I remember briefly messing with 512-bit. I was doing QA for them and had to learn how to handle this stuff and translate it into values that displays can show, and do this in a way that it's self didn't invalidate the data (and thus fire false bad QA readings). It's very non-trivial.

#

It was marketing. The console would've been faster if they didn't include 64-bit at all. However, the jump from 8 to 16-bit was huge in consumers' eyes, and from 16 to 32 was also huge, so marketing thought that they could ride this if they sold their console as 64-bit just to make it appeal to consumers.

  • Linux: ~/.config/obs-studio/plugin_config/obs-browser

silver fable
# terse helm yeah it was basically the CD-ROM driver

Well, it wasn't. It was the loader for the driver that mounted it to a drive letter. Close enough, though. There were actually other versions that were not mscdex for things like Creative's proprietary DVD-ROM that used a non-standard IDE connector to plug into their DXR2 hardware MPEG2 decoder card.

just that it was needed to get CDROMs to work

my point is current 12-year-olds are deprived of that experience because everything just works now

silver fable

Nah, the details honestly didn't matter, I just mentioned it because I was in high school dealing with drives not working with mscdex, or it would, but would have to add an additional driver as well.

(and even if it didn't, current 12-year-olds don't know what CDs are)
