I think it's more than our own demands go up. I used to be content with 4c4t betseen 2012 and 2017, it took me a while to get used to 8c16t. It's like going from a single quad-core CPU to two quad-core CPUs. (And since it was a R7 1700X, that's almost exactly the case.)

It does not matter how old you currently are when I say this: "You learn this as you get older:" Life isn't black and white. Almost nothing in the entire world is boolean. Heck, even cybernetics aren't boolean when you get down far enough. If problems really were as simple as we wish they were, we'd already have solved them and moved on as a society a millennia ago.

There's a show that aired on NBC named "The Good Place" that does a really good job of explaining some of this. It requires truly watching each and every episode to comprehend, though. The situations in question really are /that/ complicated.
