Hello,
I am new here and also will try to run Home Assistant in my laptop. Any advice about installing on a MacBook Air will ne appreciated as I am not 100% sure that is possible and will work for all kind of Zigbee devices I aplan to install. Thamks-

Your MacBook will need to run HAOS in a VM

That's not Home Assistant

#

That's the companion app

twin gate
#

Yes, that is correct - sorry for not being clearer on that. I believe that is all I need to control the Zigbee devices by now.

eager axle
#

No, you need Home Assistant

#

The companion app is just another way of interacting with HA itself, and has sensors that tell HA about the device (things like battery level)

drifting marten
#

best is HAOS running on Rpi4 or homeassistnat yellow

is it a new M1 Air or an old Intel one?

twin gate
slim bay
#

yeah, no problem then, I would install Docker and run the HA container

twin gate

#

HA provides a full system image for running on a RPi, so it would be easier setting it up and maintaining it

#

otherwise a RPi is just another PC, you don't gain anything substantial

drifting marten
slim bay
#

um no, that's absolutely irrelevant?

#

unless I'm missing your point here

#

are we comparing the Mac with a RPi?

eager axle
#

Docker on Mac is nerfed

drifting marten
#

no you can use zigbee sticks, ADB-S radios etc etc

eager axle
drifting marten
slim bay
#

you're saying Docker on macOS can't access hardware devices?

#

if that's the case, I stand corrected

eager axle
#

The problem is the networking stack is incomplete

drifting marten
#

instead of hassle of working in a virtual environment you have "normal" access to HA on rpi

eager axle
#

It doesn't support host mode

#

So, that breaks many integrations

slim bay
#

run Linux in vbox and install docker there 😉

drifting marten
slim bay
#

which is what Docker could be doing too

drifting marten
#

box in box in a box

slim bay
#

at least it would work just fine

#
  • portable to any other machine
#

(except M1 Macs heh heh)

drifting marten
#

Conbee stick I was trying to mention before

eager axle
#

CC2652 based is worlds better than Conbee

#

Even better, buy a network connected one and save yourself the pain of USB passthrough

slim bay
#

like what?

#

btw what about Sonoff sticks? I just saw a cheap(ish) one on Amazon

eager axle
#

Depends on which one

#

The cheap ones are CC2531 based and utter crap

slim bay
#

SONOFF Zigbee 3.0 USB Dongle Plus,TI CC2652P + CP2102N Zigbee USB-Stick

eager axle
#

And there growing reports of issues with those

drifting marten
#

why this hassle when you can do away with a simple 2Gb rpi4 and 32GB sd card exclusive for JA

eager axle
#

Sonoff's hardware generally seems to be suspect

slim bay
#

good luck finding a RPi 4 to buy

eager axle
#

A Pi is a great educational toy

#

For running HA it's ... ok, maybe

slim bay
#
  • same money will get you a mini server that will do more
#

"server"

drifting marten
#

follow Jeff Geerling for the stocks

slim bay
drifting marten
eager axle
#

So?

#

Doesn't make it an awesome choice

#

Just makes it convenient

drifting marten
eager axle
#

Something 64 bit, with at least 2 cores and 2 GB of RAM

#

Like about any second hand system from the last decade

#

I run HA on an 8 or 9 year old i5 laptop. It outperforms any Pi by an insane amount, and yet is still quiet and low power

drifting marten
eager axle
#

Tiny bit more, but you get more as a result

slim bay
#

just make sure you turn off the screen lol

eager axle
#

Pi4 is, what, 6W ish at peak

My laptop is about 10W at peak

drifting marten
slim bay
#

I have an old Air I'm using as a TTS announcer, it idles about 10W too

drifting marten
slim bay
#

I tried a MacBook Pro with the screen full on running the photo screensaver, that was going ~35W

drifting marten
#

what installation method to use on old pc?

slim bay
#

for home stuff I run a Lenovo ThinkCentre i5/8GB, $100ish, 35kWh

I have a Slaesh's CC2652RB stick and it's alright, nothing to complain about

drifting marten
#

need one in Pakistan

drifting marten
eager axle
slim bay
#

you can run Proxmox on the old machine and have one VM with HAOS

drifting marten
#

can buy from aliexpress but that takes too long and can go MIA

This thread has been well hijacked
