For Zigbee see the #zigbee-archived channel and the pinned messages there
Your MacBook will need to run HAOS in a VM
Thank you for your quick reply. I saw this tutorial and it seems quite straightforward https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBWYaQ64Q18However I am not sure how to get the Home Assitant URL as requested...2:07
Yes, that is correct - sorry for not being clearer on that. I believe that is all I need to control the Zigbee devices by now.
No, you need Home Assistant
The companion app is just another way of interacting with HA itself, and has sensors that tell HA about the device (things like battery level)
you need actual HA using anyone of these methods https://www.home-assistant.io/installation/
best is HAOS running on Rpi4 or homeassistnat yellow
I see. Thanks for the clarification.
Do you see any advantage of using a virtual machine instead of your pc (in the case of installing HA for example on Windows 10)?
is it a new M1 Air or an old Intel one?
My laptop is a MacBook Air M1 2020
Great! Thank you for this information and the link. I will definitely try it.
Just one more thing, would it be even better using a raspberry-pi? why? I actually do not plan to buy one but forcuriosity.
HA provides a full system image for running on a RPi, so it would be easier setting it up and maintaining it
otherwise a RPi is just another PC, you don't gain anything substantial
don't you count, 4 USb type A ports something substantial ?
um no, that's absolutely irrelevant?
unless I'm missing your point here
are we comparing the Mac with a RPi?
That's not supported
Docker on Mac is nerfed
no you can use zigbee sticks, ADB-S radios etc etc
https://www.home-assistant.io/installation/macos lists two options, neither of which is Docker on Mac
for running HA
you're saying Docker on macOS can't access hardware devices?
if that's the case, I stand corrected
The problem is the networking stack is incomplete
instead of hassle of working in a virtual environment you have "normal" access to HA on rpi
🤦♂️
run Linux in vbox and install docker there 😉

which is what Docker could be doing too
box in box in a box
at least it would work just fine
- portable to any other machine
(except M1 Macs heh heh)
Conbee stick I was trying to mention before

CC2652 based is worlds better than Conbee
Even better, buy a network connected one and save yourself the pain of USB passthrough
SONOFF Zigbee 3.0 USB Dongle Plus,TI CC2652P + CP2102N Zigbee USB-Stick
And there growing reports of issues with those
why this hassle when you can do away with a simple 2Gb rpi4 and 32GB sd card exclusive for JA
Sonoff's hardware generally seems to be suspect
good luck finding a RPi 4 to buy
follow Jeff Geerling for the stocks
but HA yellow is based on rpi
what is recommended choice?
Something 64 bit, with at least 2 cores and 2 GB of RAM
Like about any second hand system from the last decade
I run HA on an 8 or 9 year old i5 laptop. It outperforms any Pi by an insane amount, and yet is still quiet and low power
I do have old laptop lying around, easily available in market too, but does it consume same energy as rpi4?
Tiny bit more, but you get more as a result
just make sure you turn off the screen lol
Pi4 is, what, 6W ish at peak
My laptop is about 10W at peak
yes more if you are running more heavy task such as frigate etc
I have an old Air I'm using as a TTS announcer, it idles about 10W too
xps 15 tops 40W average
I tried a MacBook Pro with the screen full on running the photo screensaver, that was going ~35W
what installation method to use on old pc?
for home stuff I run a Lenovo ThinkCentre i5/8GB, $100ish, 35kWh
Whatever you want - HAOS or Container
any particular brand or stick?
See the pinned messages in #zigbee-archived
how do install HAOS on a old windows machine?
I have a Slaesh's CC2652RB stick and it's alright, nothing to complain about
need one in Pakistan
https://www.daraz.pk/ is one such store
The #installation-archived channel can guide you further on installs if you need help
you can run Proxmox on the old machine and have one VM with HAOS
can buy from aliexpress but that takes too long and can go MIA
This thread has been well hijacked
🤷♂️
🤪
