Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Thread/Matter all fit the bill, except for power

#

Wired power for sensors is, other than for door/window sensors (where the data is also wired), not a thing

#

However, battery life on typical Zigbee sensors is years - 2 to 4 years

Jesus ok my experience with battery devices is dated, to say the least. Last time I messed with that stuff, it was weeks. If the timeframe is that long, then that would be bottom of the list

With wifi devices battery life is that bad

#

Hell, I'd some sensor strips that had a 10 year battery life

#

Personally:

  1. #zwave-archived only makes sense in North America, or if you've a large budget and life in high density housing
  2. #thread-archived and #matter-archived are still emerging tech, use them only if you're happy to deal with growing pains
  3. #zigbee-archived has some problem brands, but as long as you avoid them and don't live somewhere drowned by WiFi signals it's rock solid

Ok that's epic

Appreciate the guidance

I'm in apartment land, so, to say there's a lot of wi-fi noise would be accurate. That said, I have a pretty decent access point if that makes a difference.

#

Zigbee, z-wave needs a dedicated hub, yeah?

Not a hub, but a coordinator

#

They also don't use WiFi in any way

Confirming my understanding:

I need (1) zigbee coordinator.
From there, there are either end-devices, or end-devices that can also act as a repeater/router?

So then theoretically, I'd just need to pick up a zigstar uzg. And if I needed any repeaters, those are generally hardwired with things like smart plugs. And everything else would just be figuring out which channels to use?

#

Largely yes

#

No end device is a router though
