Where are you stuck? What does "connect" mean to you?

tiny stream
#

connect to me means so that I can turn on and off an outlet depending on humidity from the info my Mi takes in

#

and I assumed that any Zigbee device could connect to another.

#

but I think I am wrong and I would need to connect them both via a larger system like home assitant?

signal canopy
#

Well, sadly no... matter promises to address that

And yes, that's exactly what HA does

#

So, your starting point is to install Home Assistant

tiny stream
#

but I don't want to buy a connector dongle so was hoping I could just use the Mi smart home hub instead

signal canopy
#

Yeah... not gonna happen ๐Ÿ˜‰

tiny stream
#

So I would need to spend $50 AUD on a stick and learn to program?

signal canopy
#

Hubs are locked down and only support what they support, you can't use them as a general purpose Zigbee coordinator

tiny stream
#

ah I see, that sucks :/ thanks though

signal canopy
#

Not really learn to program, but yes, buy a good #zigbee-archived coordinator and then learn HA

#

There are plenty of bad choices of Zigbee coordinator - the #zigbee-archived channel can guide you to the better choices

tiny stream
#

Do I also need to buy a rasberry pi?

signal canopy
#

No

#

You can run Home Assistant on almost any vaguely modern computer

#

I run it on an 9 year old laptop, others run it on a Pi, an oDroid, PC, Mac...

tiny stream
#

does the computer need to be on permanently?

signal canopy
#

Yes

#

Computers, like toasters, don't work when they're not on

tiny stream
#

haha nice quote. So my devices wont talk to one another when the computer is not on?

#

ok

signal canopy
#

No, because they're using the computer to talk to each other

tiny stream
#

yea alrighty thanks

signal canopy
#

They're really talking to the computer, and it's then passing on a different message. Think of the computer (HA) as a translator for the different languages each devices "speaks"

#

The humidity rises, and the sensor sends that information to HA. HA then goes ah, I've been told that when the humidity goes above 80 I should turn on the fan so it sends the turn on command to the fan

tiny stream
#

Yea makes sense. I don't really plan on making a crazy system, I just want it for this one purpose ๐Ÿ˜ข

signal canopy
#

It's going to be massively overkill for that, but it'll work

tiny stream
#

Yea thats what I am thinking haha

You can buy extractor fans with humidity sensors that'll turn themselves on and off
