I would like to know if there is a way to factory reset it in another way so It would start working again

#

I got no idea if it can be fixes through software

#

Is it possible that problem occured in ZigBee2MQTT?

winged knoll
#

If you already factory reset it, then there's not much else you can do

umbral gorge

So I guess flashing it is my only choice right now

Or maybe something broke because of that spamming messages dozen times each second

Does anyone know where I could find a new Raspberry Pi 4 for MSRP??? I can’t seem to find it at most of my major retailers…

I know all about the PC component shortages, but I didn’t know that the semiconductor shortage also got to the Raspberry Pi 😦

Understandable since it's not a real computer

I have seen one retailer with the 2GB model for MSRP, but I actually want the 4GB model just to play it safe…

Alright. I’ll see what’s available. Thanks for all the help!

sudden moth
#

@whole vault, I haven't been able to find one, is it for HA? If so, you could put it on an old computer as a virtual machine. Save yourself $50 - $90 on the PI and even more having to buy accessories. I've been reading that you don't want to run it on an SD card for too long because they tend to fail.

I will say, if you decide to go that route, look up how to run it off of an SSD so it doesn't fail on you.

whole vault
#

I’ll definitely look at using a proper SSD with the Pi, if I decide to go that route. As of now the only model I can find for MSRP is the 2GB model. Does HA OS run fine on 2GB’s of RAM? As previously mentioned, I won’t be connecting a whole house worth of devices. I’ll be using HA for a single room, since the rest of the family can’t be bothered/don’t really have the need for HA…

sudden moth
#

You should be good to go with 2GB Ram on one room.

whole vault
#

It does hurt though… Having to pay $45 for the 2GB model when, if it were available, the 4GB model is only $5-$10 more.

sudden moth
#

Yeah. I thought about getting a PI4 but I just built a virtual machine for it. I tried to run it on a Pi 3 but it was extremely slow.

whole vault
#

Even though I know that I would be just fine using an old laptop, I would just feel better having HA run on a new, separate device. Speaking of which, I have been thinking… How do you fit a bulky Zigbee andZ-wave stick on the 2 USB 3.0 ports at the back of the Pi? A hub?

#

You can get the Aeotec Z-Stick 7 which is pretty small... they've been out of stock for a while though. I'm getting the Conbee II stick for Zigbee stuff delivered tomorrow. I don't know how big that one is.

#

doesn't look very big.

whole vault
#

I got the Aeotec Z-Stick Gen5+. Seemed like a solid choice. I do like the look of the Gen7 more though…

sudden moth
#

Same, I have Gen 5 have been looking for the Gen 7 for the compactness so it isn't sticking out the back of my machine so far.

whole vault
#

But the Zigbee USB from Sonoff that I want to get seems really big and bulky (for something that has to be plugged in next to other usb devices)

sudden moth
#

When I get the Zigbee device tomorrow, i'll let you know how big it is. I did see the devices from Sonoff and they did seem a bit bulkier.

whole vault
#

I think buying this Pi 4 is going to be my best bet. All of the old laptops I can think that we have lying around are either too old or too unreliable. I’ll need to buy these so called extensions, an SSD, a case… it’s getting more expensive than I thought. I’ll make it work though…

(Sorry for the ping🤦‍♂️)

I'm trying to set up an alert for when my crawlspace gets too cold (trying to avoid frozen pipes) but I'm having trouble deciding on a temperature sensor. The sensor will be all the way at the end of the crawlspace, so I would really like to avoid batteries if possible and I have zero experience with arduino or similar dev boards, so I prefer something off the shelf. Ideally, I would like something that I could plug in behind my fridge that had a temperature probe on a wire that I could put through the floor into the crawlspace (there's already a small opening for the fridge's water line I could expand, then seal with caulk or similar)

does anyone have any suggestions?

whole vault
#

Maybe look at some of the Sonoff temp sensors? I saw some of they’re devices using the probe you’re talking about. I’m just spitballing though. I have no experience.

spare iris
#

I saw the sonoff ones, but the one that seems to be most widely recommended is built to be hard-wired into the mains. I suppose I could get a plug to wire it to and plug it in, but I don't have a ton of experience with high voltage elecrical so I'm not super confident

whole vault
# glossy prism You'd likely get better performance out of a mini PC anyway

I’ll take a look at some super cheap mini PC’s. Anything that can run Windows will run HA just fine, right? Also, even though this is probably a dumb question, all of the different HA OS versions are all equal, right? HA running on a Pi is not developed more/better than what is used on a VM or something like that…

spare iris
#

With how PC hardware is right now, I feel like a pi would be cheaper. A power supply, SD card and case are all really cheap

whole vault
spare iris
#

I wonder if there are any grill thermometers with accurate readings below zero (F) that work with home assistant haha

whole vault
#

And I should also keep in mind that I still need to get a no neutral light switch and at least one motion sensor. But I’m calling it a night. I’ll keep an eye out for possible solutions to your problem!

spare iris
#

The case is optional for a pi, but I'd recommend it. Just easier to keep it away from conductors that way

#

(these three all told would be in the neighborhood of $40/45, not including the base board)

runic drift
#

Been running HA on an rpi4 for quite sometime. the amount of ram you would need depends really only on one question. If you plan to pipe cameras into it or not. If the answer is yes than the 4G model is plenty don't need 8GB. If the answer is no than the 2G model is more than enough.

#

to give reference I have 3 frigate cameras piped into mine and I use less than 1G of ram

Hi! I'm looking to install outdoor lighting from Philips Hue, but need a way to control them. Does anyone have experience with using a light sensor to control outdoor lighting? Philips have an outdoor motion detector which also has a light sensor, but I don't know if I can just use it for light detection. I don't care about motion detection.

winged knoll
#

Yes, it reports light levels

#

Lots of people here do similar things, light level controlled lighting is pretty common

#

You can also get a rough approximation simply using the sun elevation, until you get a light sensor

rain nacelle
#

That's a good point. Except in winter, a cloudy day might never actually get bright enough to turn the lights off here

winged knoll
#

You can obviously combine the two, so that it only turns the lights on if it's dark and the sun has set, but I suspect you'll find that once you've got the light levels tuned you won't need to

rain nacelle
#

Seems like the Hue sensor reports every 5 minutes which should be plenty

winged knoll
#

Assuming it's sensitive enough... of course

#

For light level reporting I do like my Z-Wave sensor, since it's USB powered it can report on 1 lux changes if I want (I don't, because that'd be mad)

#

As long as the Hue will report on both time and change, it'll be fine

rain nacelle
#

USB power outdoor seems a bit risky though

winged knoll
#

Well, you'd have to have it sheltered anyway, if you used the Aeotec, so at that point it's no big deal

rain nacelle
#

Which sensor do you have?

winged knoll
#

I have the Aeotec, the Fibaro Z-Wave, and the Xiaomi Mijia Zigbee sensors

#

The Aeotec is the best multi-sensor I've used, but it's priced accordingly

#

The Xiaomi is a very close second in terms of light sensor, and a fraction of the price

#

If you run your favorite Linux distribution, just do KVM and docker

feral night
#

KVM stands for Rancher or Portainer?

winged knoll
#

KVM stands for ... KVM

#

Portainer is a UI for Docker, to do all the things you can do with Compose, plus also cause you problems

#

So KVM is ... functionality of Linux, that is necessary for docker to run .. and I don't have to do anything special if I'm about to install linux-hosted proxmox on this pc, am i right?

fringe moon
#

No

#

KVM runs vms

#

Docker runs containers

#

None depend on the other

winged knoll
#

KVM == VM == run an entire OS in a box
Docker == kernel namespace == run an application in a cardboard box

feral night
#

hmm probably I'm dull, but if I install proxmox as hypervisor, then create separate VM to run containers using debian with docker then KVM is this Debian-powered VM

#

Probably yes, basing on Tinkerer's comment

winged knoll
#

You'd be a lot better off running Docker on the Proxmox host itself

feral night
#

Okay, that's really valuable as proxmox can do it

winged knoll
#

Proxmox is Debian with software added

#

You can take a vanilla Debian install and run the Proxmox installer

feral night
#

So what you recommend is not to install proxmox os on barebones NUC, but install debian, then proxmox and docker on it?

winged knoll
#

That's not what I said

#

Proxmox is just software on top of Debian. You can use their installer to get both at the same time, or you can install it on top of Debian

#

Either way, don't create a VM and install Docker inside, install Docker directly on the host running Proxmox

feral night
#

ahh, I've thought that recommended installed on Proxmox project page is separate OS

Buy something CC2652 based. This list is a good one, both Tube and Electrolama have been proven to have excellent customer service. The current generation of EZSP sticks (see here for some) are also a good choice for ZHA.

Anything CC2530 or CC2531 based should be avoided - they're old, slow, and only suitable for a dozen or so devices. The Sonoff ZBbridge isn't advised since it uses WiFi (built in interference causing stability/reliability issues), and the HUSBZB-1 uses an older chipset so should be avoided.

Finally, the ConBee range are fine with deCONZ, but experience with ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT appears to be mixed.

Thanks a million! Wanted to double check before ordering the board and having it shipped all the way from the UK. I decided against it though, as the shipping was expensive. I've got an Aqara motion sensor. I've used both the Motion and Occupancy settings to turn lights on/off in a room. It seems that it will often detect no motion/occupancy even when I'm in the room (despite my normal fidgeting, it seems I sit still enough to not be noticed by the motion detectors at my office, too), yet the lights will remain on after I've left the room for quite a while - longer than the timeout period I've put in the automation, and will turn themselves on at random times even though nobody (not even the dog) are in the room.

#

Is there any way to tune the sensor itself or to identify what's triggering it?

#

We do have forced hot-air heat, and I thought about it picking up the curtains blowing above the vent, but I've watched them and there's no obvious movement (we have a deflector that redirects the air away from the curtains, anyway). Could it be sensing the heat (~100°F) coming out of the register and identifying that as occupancy?

Hi guys and girls! So, I have a boiler with an RF remote (remote model is Siemens QAA78.910) but I don't know which frequency is running. Any

My plan is (beside world domination of course) to replicate the functions for that remote with and ESP and a RF emitter.

I have googled it and I have no luck finding an aftermarket part that is capable of doing this, but maybe someone knows here.

Also, I'm going to buy a ceiling fan than I want to integrate and the ones that i like are controlled the same way (rf remote).

I currently have a pair of receiver-emitter 433mhz radio modules (xy-fst fs1000a) so I can make a test setup to see if the remote is a 433mhz or not.

I have:

  1. Done the manual update driver so that Windows sees the Zigbee & Zwave controllers of the stick

Idle, CPU is at 4%

That is great

If you have a 4 core system anything up to load values of 4 is ok, above 4 you have issues

Example from my 24core system

#

Lots of headroom on cpu

I'm thinking of possibly upgrading, though. I have a 10-year-old iMac that's not doing anything. A fresh install of Ubuntu or Debian and I may get better performance. It's not hard wired, though.

fringe moon

That'll be a huge upgrade over a pi

#

Basically anything is better than a pi 3

#

Horrible storage system

#

Horrible networking

You are going to want something wired though

#

That can be accomplished via a usb dongle

And I don't want to run wires between floors

Considering I'm only planning on adding some Hue lights and maybe a thermostat, I should be fine

I don't have too many smart devices in my house. Can't put pictures in chat but it's 3 Google Homes, 2 Rokus, 4 security cameras, and my computer RGB

fringe moon
#

That's how it always starts out

#

Now I control and monitor a few hundred devices

chrome portal
#

Other than lights and a thermostat or two I can't think of anything else. Not getting smart locks, don't have a garage for the door...maybe a smart plug here or there

fringe moon
#

My wife was too, now she asks me to design stuff

#

I have two rules, no smart locks, no indoor cameras

Is $100 reasonable for a six-pack of multicolored A19 ZigBee bulbs? Looking at a Sengled set but $100 for six lightbulbs just feels wrong 😅

glossy prism

It's not unheard of for zigbee stuff. Do note that sengled lights don't act as routers though

I hope this is the right channel. Ive got 4 xiaomi ble temp/humidity sensors (LYWSD03MMC) flashed through Telink Flasher with Aaron Christophel's firmware and its coming into ESPHome jsut fine but even though I select advertise in degrees F, esphome is getting the temp as degrees C, so HA is then converting it into degrees F, which makes it appear that my house is around 160 degrees. I'm guessing its a setting somewhere but I can't seem to figure it out. Anyone have the solution by chance?

I didn’t realise you could flash custom firmware onto those, that’s cool.

Ah yes, that little detail.. well I live in Australia so if the past is anything to go off it should be pretty fun finding a suitable product.

fringe moon

Since you are in Australia

Just buy smart bulbs

Which is what I would recommend anyway

proven girder
#

IKEA tradfri are good as long as you don’t mind getting zigbee

#

Otherwise @unique cargo there’s a whole section on the HA forums about approved stuff in australia. There’s shelly stuff that hide in the wall behind the switch which is also an option (wifi based)

fringe moon

Is that like Chippendale's, but for smart stuff?

anyone using tasmota lights have issues where they won't change state on command? i.e. its stuck on or off?

zealous dune
#

they always change state on command

slate cipher

so if I go to the device in HA, and try to toggle it, after a second or two it flicks back to the state it was originally in

Other times, they just appear as Unavailable

That sounds like network issues

I can go into the device via IP address and change it fine, however it takes a while to load sometimes

I have multiple WLED isntallations and the easiest way IMO to get up and running quickly is to buy a DigUno or DigQuad from @wary bluff who runs a worldwide store and through @crystal sail for buying boards in the US. They come preflashed with WLED and are super easy to use. check it out at quinled.info and both of those guys have a ton of videos on their youtube channels covering WLED, how to wire it in, HA integration and on and on. They both were a huge help in getting me from something I wanted to do to having it up and running all over my house!

Hello everyone. I'm planning on connecting home assistant to my house, but i wanted to ask for some advice when it comes to hardware. My house is rather big, and every lamp is a "smart lamp" connected trough either MQTT or bluetooth. I've gotten them to connect to a raspberry pi trough MQTT so i know that it works. I'm wondering what specs a home assistant computer should have that would be connected to about 10-15 different lamps. Also could i face issues with MQTT range, is there a way to extend the range?

winged knoll
#

MQTT doesn't have range...

#

I'm guessing you might be confusing it with Zigbee2MQTT?

#

Regardless, your minimum spec is a Pi3, which will be fine for far more than a dozen lights

gloomy spoke
#

Wonders if you could have an MQTT client on the space station...

winged knoll

I remember somebody worked out the maximum distance based on TCP timeouts

thorn thicket
#

Oh haha, just out of curiosity, how does mqtt work?

winged knoll
#

MQTT is a message protocol - there's a few million articles on it out there

Your devices will connect using Zigbee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth, WiFi, etc

MQTT is a layer above that

As a follow up to my question on the xiaomi temp/humidity sensors, I flashed them with the most up to date firmware and set them to advertise in degrees C since that is how esphome was taking in the number regardless of how it was advertising. This may or may not be the "right" way to do it, but I now have correct temperature being reported.

You wire the dumb switch to the Shelly, so that the Shelly controls the actual light, and the switch is simply an input to the Shelly

Question: I want to switch to Home Assistant , but I am going to use a 27" screen I have in the kitchen. So no touch input. But when I don't have an input that kindoff defeats the purpose of HomeAssistent. Anyone have a good Idea as input. Just putting there a mouse would look stupid. Hi all question.
I have cordless blinds. Is there anything to automate those. Or should I just look into balli blinds or similar

zealous dune
#

You will need to be more specific

daring tusk
#

So my blinds that were in the house are newer cordless ones

#

The top doesn't have too many mechanics it just uses string that runs through the blinds

#

And I was wondering if there maby was a motor that could replace the top portion to automate them

#

My home is almost all zwave, so I'd want either that or wifi

zealous dune
#

How do you move them if they're "cordless"

daring tusk

There's a cord going through the actual blinds. But not like a pull string

So not cordless?

daring tusk

So you put a bit of pressure on the bottom and it retracts

Is it a spring mechanism?
