I got no idea if it can be fixes through software
Is it possible that problem occured in ZigBee2MQTT?
If you already factory reset it, then there's not much else you can do
So I guess flashing it is my only choice right now
Or maybe something broke because of that spamming messages dozen times each second
Does anyone know where I could find a new Raspberry Pi 4 for MSRP??? I can’t seem to find it at most of my major retailers…
Where are you
Chicago/Illinois
I know all about the PC component shortages, but I didn’t know that the semiconductor shortage also got to the Raspberry Pi 😦
Understandable since it's not a real computer
I have seen one retailer with the 2GB model for MSRP, but I actually want the 4GB model just to play it safe…
So did everyone else
Yea…
Is running HA on an Intel Nuc any less reliable than running HA on a raspberry Pi?
It's much, much more reliable
Real PC vs toy
I’m starting to look at alternatives since I can’t find a Raspberry Pi…
Good to hear…But a Nuc is more expansive than a Raspberry Pi, right?
Of course
What is my best alternative that is roughly in the same price range as a Raspberry Pi?
Any minicomputer or laptop from the last decade, Except atoms will be an upgrade from a pi @whole vault
Alright. Gotcha. 2GB vs 4GB vs 8GB RAM?
Anything
I’ll only be servicing one room… not an entire house
Then a toaster

Alright. I’ll see what’s available. Thanks for all the help!
@whole vault, I haven't been able to find one, is it for HA? If so, you could put it on an old computer as a virtual machine. Save yourself $50 - $90 on the PI and even more having to buy accessories. I've been reading that you don't want to run it on an SD card for too long because they tend to fail.
I will say, if you decide to go that route, look up how to run it off of an SSD so it doesn't fail on you.
I’ll definitely look at using a proper SSD with the Pi, if I decide to go that route. As of now the only model I can find for MSRP is the 2GB model. Does HA OS run fine on 2GB’s of RAM? As previously mentioned, I won’t be connecting a whole house worth of devices. I’ll be using HA for a single room, since the rest of the family can’t be bothered/don’t really have the need for HA…
You should be good to go with 2GB Ram on one room.
It does hurt though… Having to pay $45 for the 2GB model when, if it were available, the 4GB model is only $5-$10 more.
Yeah. I thought about getting a PI4 but I just built a virtual machine for it. I tried to run it on a Pi 3 but it was extremely slow.
Even though I know that I would be just fine using an old laptop, I would just feel better having HA run on a new, separate device. Speaking of which, I have been thinking… How do you fit a bulky Zigbee andZ-wave stick on the 2 USB 3.0 ports at the back of the Pi? A hub?
Extension cables
I see… makes sense.
Which you should use anyway to avoid noise
You can get the Aeotec Z-Stick 7 which is pretty small... they've been out of stock for a while though. I'm getting the Conbee II stick for Zigbee stuff delivered tomorrow. I don't know how big that one is.
doesn't look very big.
I got the Aeotec Z-Stick Gen5+. Seemed like a solid choice. I do like the look of the Gen7 more though…
Same, I have Gen 5 have been looking for the Gen 7 for the compactness so it isn't sticking out the back of my machine so far.
But the Zigbee USB from Sonoff that I want to get seems really big and bulky (for something that has to be plugged in next to other usb devices)
When I get the Zigbee device tomorrow, i'll let you know how big it is. I did see the devices from Sonoff and they did seem a bit bulkier.
I think buying this Pi 4 is going to be my best bet. All of the old laptops I can think that we have lying around are either too old or too unreliable. I’ll need to buy these so called extensions, an SSD, a case… it’s getting more expensive than I thought. I’ll make it work though…
I’d love to see !
(Sorry for the ping🤦♂️)
You could also consider a mini PC
Wouldn’t a mini PC be more expensive than a Pi?
After a case, PSU, and SSD (and adapter) for a pi, not necessarily
You'd likely get better performance out of a mini PC anyway
Damn. You’re right. I keep on comparing all the alternatives to the Pi alone, when in fact I need a bunch of accessories…
I'm trying to set up an alert for when my crawlspace gets too cold (trying to avoid frozen pipes) but I'm having trouble deciding on a temperature sensor. The sensor will be all the way at the end of the crawlspace, so I would really like to avoid batteries if possible and I have zero experience with arduino or similar dev boards, so I prefer something off the shelf. Ideally, I would like something that I could plug in behind my fridge that had a temperature probe on a wire that I could put through the floor into the crawlspace (there's already a small opening for the fridge's water line I could expand, then seal with caulk or similar)
does anyone have any suggestions?
Maybe look at some of the Sonoff temp sensors? I saw some of they’re devices using the probe you’re talking about. I’m just spitballing though. I have no experience.
I saw the sonoff ones, but the one that seems to be most widely recommended is built to be hard-wired into the mains. I suppose I could get a plug to wire it to and plug it in, but I don't have a ton of experience with high voltage elecrical so I'm not super confident
I’ll take a look at some super cheap mini PC’s. Anything that can run Windows will run HA just fine, right? Also, even though this is probably a dumb question, all of the different HA OS versions are all equal, right? HA running on a Pi is not developed more/better than what is used on a VM or something like that…
With how PC hardware is right now, I feel like a pi would be cheaper. A power supply, SD card and case are all really cheap
Nah. Drop it then. If you aren’t confident/not feeling good about it then don’t risk it.
I wonder if there are any grill thermometers with accurate readings below zero (F) that work with home assistant haha
I’ll first take a look at recommendations for super cheap mini PC’s and then compare those to a Pi with all its accessories. I just don’t have lot’s of money lying around… I have none, to be exact…😂
And I should also keep in mind that I still need to get a no neutral light switch and at least one motion sensor. But I’m calling it a night. I’ll keep an eye out for possible solutions to your problem!
The case is optional for a pi, but I'd recommend it. Just easier to keep it away from conductors that way
(these three all told would be in the neighborhood of $40/45, not including the base board)
Been running HA on an rpi4 for quite sometime. the amount of ram you would need depends really only on one question. If you plan to pipe cameras into it or not. If the answer is yes than the 4G model is plenty don't need 8GB. If the answer is no than the 2G model is more than enough.
to give reference I have 3 frigate cameras piped into mine and I use less than 1G of ram
@whole vault may not be ideal but here is something... It's a Raspberry Pi 400 (not the 4B). It's a keyboard format so it's not what everyone is used to seeing.
https://www.amazon.com/Raspberry-Pi-Quad-Core-Bluetooth-Complete/dp/B08XS24CMV/ref=sr_1_9?keywords=raspberry+pi+4+8gb&qid=1642135741&s=electronics&sprefix=raspberry+pi+4%2Celectronics%2C52&sr=1-9
It has 4Gb RAM, a 1.8Ghz processor and everything else is almost identical to the 4B, the 4B has a 1.5Ghz processor.
Hi! I'm looking to install outdoor lighting from Philips Hue, but need a way to control them. Does anyone have experience with using a light sensor to control outdoor lighting? Philips have an outdoor motion detector which also has a light sensor, but I don't know if I can just use it for light detection. I don't care about motion detection.
Yes, it reports light levels
Lots of people here do similar things, light level controlled lighting is pretty common
You can also get a rough approximation simply using the sun elevation, until you get a light sensor
That's a good point. Except in winter, a cloudy day might never actually get bright enough to turn the lights off here
You can obviously combine the two, so that it only turns the lights on if it's dark and the sun has set, but I suspect you'll find that once you've got the light levels tuned you won't need to
Seems like the Hue sensor reports every 5 minutes which should be plenty
Assuming it's sensitive enough... of course
For light level reporting I do like my Z-Wave sensor, since it's USB powered it can report on 1 lux changes if I want (I don't, because that'd be mad)
As long as the Hue will report on both time and change, it'll be fine
USB power outdoor seems a bit risky though
Well, you'd have to have it sheltered anyway, if you used the Aeotec, so at that point it's no big deal
Which sensor do you have?
I have the Aeotec, the Fibaro Z-Wave, and the Xiaomi Mijia Zigbee sensors
The Aeotec is the best multi-sensor I've used, but it's priced accordingly
The Xiaomi is a very close second in terms of light sensor, and a fraction of the price
I guess I could install it in a waterproof box with a transparent lid
Is this the one you have? https://xiaomi-mi.com/sockets-and-sensors/xiaomi-mi-occupancy-sensor/
No, the light sensor one
Yes, and cheap
Any idea of the battery life?
Buy 2 dozen 😄
Yeah, I've replaced batteries on one Xiaomi sensor, and they're the oldest sensors I've got. I've replaced batteries on every Tuya device, and most of my Konke ones
It's likely cheaper from AliExpress, particularly when you buy in bulk
1/2 price, 10x delivery time
Usually 12-16 days for me
Very reasonable
I order 3-400 items a year from AliExpress
Since we're talking sensors. Does anyone have a CO2 sensor to recommend?
I'd like to monitor the CO2 in the bedrooms and office
counting after 3 gets confusing
I feel CO2 is a much more important factor than VOC for the most part
This seems to have it all https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003623592828.html
seems.... 😈
Tuya 🤢
Cloud based with generally poor options for local control
Oh. It says Zigbee though
There are two different models
Only the gateway says ZigBee if you click it
All the sensors have pictures of tuya smart life

Mildly confusing
The optimal would be temp/humidity/co2/smoke and alarm in one unit
I'd buy 10 in a heartbeat
good news, you can build them yourself
I'm not sure I'd trust myself with building a smoke detector
but you'd trust tuya.... 🤔
Good news, the chance of CO2 in your house is low, however Xiaomi and Honeywell make good smart smoke detectors
i use MHZ-19 and SCD30 for CO2
quite pricy
not as much as co2 asphyxiation
Just open a window once a week
I'm worried CO2 levels affect my sleep quality, but I also don't want -10°C in my bedroom
I'd say you are more likely to have sleep apnea
I'm pretty sure my wife would let me know
I sleep very deep though. Pulse dipping down to ~38bpm
Yeah, mine was 42 during apnea tracking and my daily average is 68
Impressive since I have a BMI of 9000
smart watches are awesome for that
https://imgur.com/a/LeSBCs7
- a living room lamp turns red when co2 levels go near 1.300ppm
I have a netatmo in my living room, so I get a notification when the CO2 levels pass 1000ppm and 2000ppm
I'm kind of surprised no one has made a combo sensor with smoke detection and air quality/CO2
yeah i have the same, weather station
you cant get co2 from the watch, just heart beat…
Are there any optical/ionic smoke sensors one can buy? It would be interesting to try and build my own
Smoke detectors are usually regulated though
That and many of the smart ones are really shitty smoke detectors
I suck at drawing schematics though
Perhaps I'll just buy these ones https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001709500617.html
I need like 10 detectors
Hi Guys, I hope everyone is ok and safe
In my apartment I currently have at my door one of this doorbells, any smart replacement that could also fit in the socket that you know off? https://www.amazon.com/-/es/Viking-Electronics-timbre-botón-Panel/dp/B001TA1SW4/ref=sr_1_58?__mk_es_US=ÅMÅŽÕÑ&crid=4EQ28BEZA5PB&keywords=doorbell+switch&qid=1642167927&sprefix=doorbell+switch%2Caps%2C128&sr=8-58
FYI, on Amazon links everything from ? onwards is irrelevant
I know there are plenty of smart doorbells out there, but I was wondering if there is a smart replacement to fit there
I did not know that, thanks
Yikes, I guess AliExpress has me pay VAT these days. Good bye additional $100 :|
I know somebody else simply put a Zigbee door/window sensor in the chime box, so that it's triggered by the magnet in the chime
your government and EU makes you pay the VAT
True
that would be me amongst others
I'm afraid I'm too much of an idiot/chicken to do this kind of DYI stuff, I haven't dare to go into soldering yet
Oh well, better than paying the "administration fee" for VAT on top of it
Then go down the sensor in the chime route
I did placed a smart button just outside the door, but now I have 2 doorbells, and I havent been able to integrate the smart one because is dependent on a xiaomi smart thing that in order to crack it requires some soldering
You can also buy pre-built units to "smartify" your doorbell
Make an AI based camera bell that'll notify you if there's a person outside. No buttons to press
https://www.tindie.com/products/fireflyelectron/wifi-doorbell-sensor/ amongst many others
https://www.zuidwijk.com/esphome-based-doorbell/ is quite neat IMO
Bonus points if you can have the doorbell greet people based on face recognition
Oh god. You again.
looking at your links @winged knoll
"Hello Frank, someone will be at the door shortly" or "Hello Frank, nobody is home. Never mind the lights"
Hello Frank. We're in, we're just ignoring you.
Now I want to make one and skin it as HAL 9000
I'm afraid I can't do that Dave
Arming orbital laser platform
this just reminded me of sumo's song hello frank
😄
pretty crazy song imo
@supple heath The precursor to Franks Wild Years
https://twitter.com/blakadder_/status/1479525753771499534 xiaomi door sensor
Ah, you went for give it an external sensor capability?
it goes behind a standard doorbell switch, i just fitted some nice plugs
Even less than that; anything after /dp/XXXXXXXXXX isn't needed 😄
I wasn't about to explain how to re-write the URL to the terse option 😛
I reserve that for technical people
Interesting fact: Raspberry Pi 4 consumes almos the same amount of energy as Intel NUC
Where did you see that? The latest i5 NUC has a TDP of 40W
Depends on the nuc, but a few of them can idle or run low pretty well
Under load or average? Average I could maybe see
I've seen full NUCs run low loads under 40w
Stuff has gotten quite power efficient over the years
I had a dl180g6 that did low loads at 190w with two sockets and 48g ram
My current main production system is 12 years old, with 14 drives, 128g ram and 2x12c CPUs, plus controllers and multiple 10g NICs, it still averages 240w
vat is charged at the checkout on aliexpress now for us in the uk
I am looking to keep a room at a given temperature, I have a exhaust fan installed already, but I am hoping to control it through a smart plug and connected thermometer/hygrometer
Any suggestions for a thermometer/hygrometer? I have no hubs or anything, just a wifi and ethernet network
I am at avg of constant 350w over daytime from my pc setup, but that's including the orbi router, 3 monitors, 10gb switch, 10gb nas, 4 core pico for hass, subwoofer (part of sound bar and 3 hue lights on back of main monitor) (few other items filling up the 10 gang extension) luckily the wiser plug does not trip with it all and reads the wattage
oh lol I lie, just checked I am pulling 378 from that socket at moment 😛
yep its a bit crowded under my desk and in the small unit
changing it all over though soon (pc wise as a new project has began). but should get a good amount for cpu as its the same as ones used in mac pro, I am sure someone will want a upgrade especially with a unlocked ES one.
Okay, have read about it more and it turns out that nuc 11 idles at 5 - https://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-NUC11PAQi7-Panther-Canyon-Mini-PC-Review-Tiger-Lake-Done-Right.517573.0.html
Anyway, it's reasonable solution for home assistant host
And probably my go-to solution, if I'll be able to install some sort of hypervisor on top of it of course
Anything will be a better choice than a pi anyway
If you run your favorite Linux distribution, just do KVM and docker
I remember your advice haha, but want to host more services on this machine than HA only, that's why I'm considering NUC for my endgame
KVM stands for Rancher or Portainer?
KVM stands for ... KVM
Portainer is a UI for Docker, to do all the things you can do with Compose, plus also cause you problems
Ohh, I feel like I've insulted two homelabers out there
Nah, we've just seen the pain that gets inflicted by people using Portainer
I moved beyond homelabs decades ago
So KVM is ... functionality of Linux, that is necessary for docker to run .. and I don't have to do anything special if I'm about to install linux-hosted proxmox on this pc, am i right?
KVM == VM == run an entire OS in a box
Docker == kernel namespace == run an application in a cardboard box
hmm probably I'm dull, but if I install proxmox as hypervisor, then create separate VM to run containers using debian with docker then KVM is this Debian-powered VM
Probably yes, basing on Tinkerer's comment
You'd be a lot better off running Docker on the Proxmox host itself
Okay, that's really valuable as proxmox can do it
Proxmox is Debian with software added
You can take a vanilla Debian install and run the Proxmox installer
So what you recommend is not to install proxmox os on barebones NUC, but install debian, then proxmox and docker on it?
That's not what I said
Proxmox is just software on top of Debian. You can use their installer to get both at the same time, or you can install it on top of Debian
Either way, don't create a VM and install Docker inside, install Docker directly on the host running Proxmox
ahh, I've thought that recommended installed on Proxmox project page is separate OS
My bad, sorry
but now I get your hint
Hello! I recently purchased an ODROID N2+ and set it up with hass.io, and it's working great.
I couldn't find a eMMC module for sale anywhere on amazon though, so I'm starting to look around. I'm a bit confused about all the different colours for them however - is there a recommendation? And/or any ideal resellers?
You might want to think about getting a hub. If nothing else, perhaps an Aeotec Smartthings hub. There are a ton of sensors (Motion, door, etc...) that connects to it that can read temperatures. They also have smart outlets to turn stuff on and off. I would recommend playing with HA on an older machine. pick up a couple of WiFi devices and see what works for you.
instead of some proprietary hub, just use HA on RPI
Hi all! I have a question regarding usage of i2c with home assistant running raspberry pi 4. I was trying to integrate a inclination sensor but I don't even know how to start reading values from i2c. Could anyone point me in the right direction?
I've followed the i2c configuration and I see i2c entries in dev folder but no devices under i2c-dev section. Anyone? 🙂
anyone have recommendations for curtain motor? preferrably compatible with HA oob, EU
like these
https://ksr-ugc.imgix.net/assets/027/389/052/ec4174ae9647da45db8499a5c95da036_original.jpg?ixlib=rb-4.0.2&crop=faces&w=1552&h=873&fit=crop&v=1575214583&auto=format&frame=1&q=92&s=3d461ecebaf7b2cd3be477b1972f93ab
A switchbot?
If you want something plug-and-play you could look at getting a Netatmo. Not cheap but works well. Or you could go the route of a ESP/NodeMCU and a DHT22 which is cheap and should work just as well.
Again with the DHT22...
There is a HA integration but no idea how reliable it is
Is it Tuya level or MQTT level...
i found tuya ones of course and also looked at the steren one on your page
but I haven't flashed a single tuya/tasmota whatever yet
Being cheap is their selling point
"homeassistant" + curtain does not give good results on aliexpress though
on the other hand i might just get lucky with bluetooth ones
was no problem hacking my oral b toothbrush to get data off it,
how hard can it be to send controls to bluetooth devices
guess the whole pairing step is the hurdle
or i go the homepod route but that limits me to homekit
Yeah I've tried HA with some smart bulbs and it seems pretty cool, I'm have a look into those devices, ty
ZigBee bulbs > wifi bulbs
Will have a look, I've heard of the esphome thing but not really got my head around it
wifi bulbs > zigbee bulbs
ok i gave in to the switchhub cloud service 🤮
traitor!
but i dont care about my curtain states being in the cloud
mi scusi
there is no way i can make them useful locally only. one can control them local but you do not know the state they are in
Folks, anyone know of a way to reset a tasmotised Sonoff T2 UK? I tried the 7x off/on but that didn't work. I also tried holding in the button for 5 seconds until the double beep, then again until it triple beeps. It double beeps but no triple beep. How do I either factory it or get it back to AP mode so I can reconfigure it? Rather not have to unwire it if possible as it's the heart of my CH and hot water system
Does anyone know why the DS02S doesn't work with ESPhome toggling on/off and adjusting brightness? I swapped the chip for an ESP-12F as per here: https://www.esphome-devices.com/devices/TreatLife-DS02S/ but it doesn't toggle. FWIW the switch works with no issues
Thanks! Problem is that at that point I might as well buy an Odroid N2+ or something, which is completely overkill…
thanks I'll try this out
I've installed a Shelly Dimmer 2 today and so working great! No issues toggling it on or off at all!
Only question I have is around the device's temperature, its reporting as 50.67C at the moment and its been climbing but I'm not sure what the normal operating temperature is... Googling hasn't helped.
Anyone else got any Shelly Dimmer 2 to compare with?
Hi there!, So im trying to make it so that i het notifications on my phone when someone rings my doorbell, its an old intercom and im curious how to wire it all.
My intercom: https://www.intercomsrus.com/handset pdf/BPT C-200 Intercom Handset Data Sheet.pdf
I was thinking about Just intercepting the doorbell signal but im not sure how to do it
Sounds like #diy-archived
ill copy it there then 🙂
hey guys i’m looking for a zigbee outdoor 3 (or 4) way plug but i can’t seem to find one. i can only find 2 ways
anyone know if they even exist?
Are there some known good weather sensors for integration? I have the Aqara combo (pressure/temp/humidity) but it would be cool to add more stuff.
As in a zigbee controlled double power outlet?
Hey guys - I have another intel NUC question for you all 😉!
Would a NUC with the following specs be good for a HA box, or to even run other services simultaneously? Only asking because they’re free and dunno if I bother paying postage for them.
N3700 Intel NUC with 8gbddr3 sodimm
That’s a lot of ram
8?
I sense sarcasm
It's a good box for free @slate cipher
8GB was a lot of memory in 2006 for desktops, for a server it was still low
I run a 4105 with 20+ containers and a lot of other services on, don't run too much CPU intensive stuff though, but compared to a pi it's an considerable upgrade in overall
Ah fair enough. Yeah tempted to just pay postage costs to my mate and get him to send me 2 or 3 of them. Even as a test bed it would be ok. I could also cannibalise one and add ram to another?
yeah but one with 3 or 4 plugs instead
Is there a vacuum robot that is local only, and supports multiple maps/floors, and of course integrates with home assistant?
What custom firmware?
Valetudo
Valetudo isn't custom firmware, it also explicitly doesn't support multi maps / multi floors https://valetudo.cloud/pages/dev_faq.html#multiple-maps--multi-floor-
Oh, i was sure it did
It is definitely custom firmware though, since I have installed it myself
Tis what led me here, I bought a Dreame D9 thinking that + Valetudo would be an awesome combo, in practice I'm a little disappointed in it. Stuff like the above makes me sad 😦
Nope, the robot retains its original firmware, Valetudo runs on the robot and emulates the cloud, custom firmware would be replacing the original firmware with something new
it's a standalone binary
Psssh semantics!
you don't call docker custom firmware
Maybe I should?
Would be awesome if there actually was custom firmware for these bots lol
i'd like to see that developer team
I should update soon, I'm running 2021.04 still i think
I'm on 2021.6 still
Hello, could you recommend kitchen cooktop compatible with Home assistant?
Is there anywhere a current list for European smart plugs available which are compatible with Home Assistant? With google I can't find anything really and I don't think I am the only one with that question.
Depends on your choice of protocol, if you want Zigbee there's lists of known working hardware pinned in #zigbee-archived
I don't have anything yet with Zigbee. I was hoping for something based on WLAN
Or, let's ask it this way around. Does it make sense to think into a Zigbee gateway? I am thinking about incl. window control sensors at a later point in time anyhow
Well, it makes sense to get a Zigbee coordinator and use ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT
anything you would recommend (again for Europe/ Germany)?
Buy something CC2652 based. This list is a good one, both Tube and Electrolama have been proven to have excellent customer service. The current generation of EZSP sticks (see here for some) are also a good choice for ZHA.
Anything CC2530 or CC2531 based should be avoided - they're old, slow, and only suitable for a dozen or so devices. The Sonoff ZBbridge isn't advised since it uses WiFi (built in interference causing stability/reliability issues), and the HUSBZB-1 uses an older chipset so should be avoided.
Finally, the ConBee range are fine with deCONZ, but experience with ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT appears to be mixed.
For sockets the brands that get positive reviews are Hue, Salus, Innr, and Tradfri (Ikea)
thx, anything which has a good range for a gateway? Would two gateways interfer which each other? I have quite some ground to cover
See the bot message?
And yes, if you don't keep them on separate channels, you'll have issues - #zigbee-archived can help there
ok, thx that helps me a lot getting started
What country are you in. We need to know that before we can help.
I have a smart door bell that shows an option in dev tools of motion_enabled: true
access_token: api_token
model_name: 'Smart Doorbell '
brand: Tuya
motion_detection: true
frontend_stream_type: hls
entity_picture: >-
/api/camera_proxy/camera.front_door?token=api_token
friendly_name: Front Door
supported_features: 2
Can I use this to get motion in HA?
I do not see a binary sensor but wondering if I need to "expose" one?
Yes it will.
Thanks a million! Wanted to double check before ordering the board and having it shipped all the way from the UK. I decided against it though, as the shipping was expensive. I’m basically waiting for some store here in the US to finally have one of the Raspberry Pi’s in stock for somewhere near MSRP. Fingers crossed! Thanks for confirming for me! I appreciate it!
anyone got any bulb recommendation for me? I wanna get like 10 smart bulbs, preferably rgbw
Looking for advice about a device to buy? Remember to provide guidance on:
- Which country you're in
- What your budget is
- What protocols you prefer (eg Zigbee, WiFi, Z-Wave)
- Any features you want (such as power monitoring, dimming, etc)
Hi!
I'm installing new windows with motorized shutters that I want to automate with zigbee relays. I have windows with two shutters, and the installers says that you have to put a relay for each motor (but they don't know why). Does anyone know if this is true and why?
The reasons may depend on your country's wiring code
guys.. really desperate factory reset my hue
so far no such luck..
hue thief is one options but I need to get the compatible usb stick
Hue what?
Of which there are many, many, many
I'll take vague questions for $20 please Bob
My car runs funny, why?
What car?
A Ford
well philips hue bulb
which I wanna factory reset the damn bulb
so I can connect it to ZHA
You do realise that they make more than one bulb
Or is it that early on Monday you left your clue behind in the weekend?
sorry.. the zigbee one that running on round hubs
I believe mine is the first gen
Good luck. You're clearly going to need it.
how many hue bulb out there?
Lots
Many years, many models, many generations
Like asking how many Ford cars there are
especially the first generations
Well, best bet for any hue is using a dimmer button
And they are cheap
And available anywhere
any recommend dimmer?
@winged knoll its LCT001
that is the series
got 4 of them and want to get rid the old bridges
I have some CLT001. They are easy to rest with the dimmer
I guess its time to purchase the dimmer. ☹️
HA Blue 2022 edition, is it a real thing? The new case do not look as nice as the old one though. Any know if you can buy just the old case somewhere? https://www.odroid.co.uk/Home-Automation?product_id=1057
If you bought a Home Assistant Blue and are having trouble with the install itself, or questions about the Blue, please see #330990055533576204.
Hey there,
What dou you use for indoor location tracking (Like track individual phones)?
As far as I searched there is two technologies, BLE and UWB. But I can't find any hardvare, ble products are like 5-6 years old, and uwb ones are farly new, so only devboard. I am missing somethig here?
You can do it with an ESP and something like ESPresence
It works... pretty poorly overall
that sound promising 😄
Thanks for the tipp anyway.
hire a butler
Well, I was cheating a little, cause, I won't use this at home, rather then an commercial place, like a exhibition, help visitors navigate.
Hey. I'm still new to HA but making progress. My office room is working perfectly..love the power! Question: I am running on a raspberry pi, can I connect my 3tb usb ssd and have movies etc stored on it and use that as kind of a NAS?
yes U can, But keep in mind, maybe the ssd draws more power so use a proper power supply.
offical raspberry power brick should be okay.
nice one @midnight ibex thanks/ I have the official psu. cool. Do I need to run any configuration to set the drive as a mounted one or anything?
well I am sure about the use case what you have in mind.
for media plex: https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/plex/
for everything samba : https://community.home-assistant.io/t/samba-share-configuration/68236
But anyone feel free to correct me, if I am wrong
The problem with BLE tracking is that most phones and other devices aren't trackable by default. They need to be broadcasting a BLE beacon, which IMO rather defeats the purpose.
https://www.room-assistant.io/ is possibly a little better
Yeah the use case is correct. I am familiar with Plex but I think when I connect my usb storage drive to the PI it dones't show that storage space on the drive...when I google ssd rasperry pi homeassistant I can only find way to install HA using ssd. Hopefully I don't have to start from scratch
If you flashed HAOS to the Pi then you're probably out of luck
I hope this is the right channel to ask this question: I'm looking for 2 hardware options. first for air quality/temperature/humidity sensors to place around my house, and second for a wireless (battery powered) doorbell with video options. I want to link them through to HomeKit, as I use HomeKit as my front end. Anyone got any recommendations?
Hey. Is the RM4 Pro temp/humidity sensor any good/worth buying?
For the former, what protocol what do you want. And for both what country are you in
I trust that the sensors aren’t of the highest quality, but is the cable worth $9.99???
Bought a NUC with a quad core CPU at 1.3Ghz. Am I going to regret that CPU?
we don't know what you plan on doing with it
also naming the CPU helps in identifying
Wall art piece 😛
I think you’ll be fine. It probably boosts at least a tad higher than that anyways?
If you’re running HA
I’m planning on only using it for HA. Would less cores at a higher speed have been better?
I actually have no idea how heavily Ha uses multiple cores? Does anyone else know?
Also, can anyone help me with this question?
a 10$ for a sensor cable is never worth it
i5-4250U
Really? I believe, but why? Bad sensors?
what are you asking right now?
Why is $10 for a temp/humidity sensor a bad deal/not worth it? I believe you, and I’m taking your advice, I just want to learn as much as I can. Thus I am curious as to why you believe it (the cable/sensor cable) isn’t worth it?
do you know what sensor is inside?
Not at all. I’ll quickly see if I can find out. Here’s the link in case you need/want it: https://www.amazon.com/Broadlink-Accessory-Temperature-Humidity-Monitor/dp/B081F3C4T4/ref=pd_bxgy_img_2/134-0727436-5223038?pd_rd_w=RjVJG&pf_rd_p=c64372fa-c41c-422e-990d-9e034f73989b&pf_rd_r=AY9F3E8W9MW4JGCXB03K&pd_rd_r=3f0be347-2f7b-438e-8a06-743e251a118e&pd_rd_wg=msm6m&pd_rd_i=B081F3C4T4&th=1
have you heard of "buying a cat in a bag"?
I believe it basically means that you don’t know what you’re getting, right?
I don’t know what/how good the sensors in the cable are… I see…
they don't wanna tell you what sensor is inside means its not a good one
I see
they usually brag if they put a decent/well known sensor
Combined with me already having the included power cable, which is just a micro USB cable, I’m not going to go for it. Is there a “universally recommended” temp/humidity sensor that is worth the money?
finished product? which protocol?
Finished product. Any protocol (Zigbee/Z-wave/WiFi)
when zigbee... always aqara
Can confirm for aqara, works well
Did a quick google. Should have went with higher speed half the cores
Even picked up pressure change from the volcano erupting too
not for "only HA"
Cool. Thank you very much for all of the help. I’ll look at what Aqara has to offer. I was actually already planning on buying their door/window sensor, so thats good.
unless only HA means: HA and all the addons in the store
You’re joking, right?😂
nope

It seriously was detected
detected on all my pressure sensors
Did you have an automation set up at all ?😂
Seriously though, I think thats very impressive.
what would you automate?
an announcement that "significant atmospheric pressure change is detected"
The sudden fluctuation at the right time for it too
“a volcano has erupted. Reporting to government agency”
Yeah you’re not in summer, I’ve got doors and windows open
Yes to clarify I mean to have some addons. It won’t be used as a flex server or anything like that though
i want a flex server
I’m just kidding. It would be cool though, if you had all your speakers loudly announce that a volcano just erupted 😂
soooo... not only HA afterall
the i5-4250U only has 2 cores - wouldn't half that
my head is also randomly exploding
Lol 2cores, what is this? 2004?
flex server with 0.5 core
2 cores pretending to be 4 cores?
that';s the one
where did you buy the NUC? antique store?
Hoiperthrowding
my desktop is like those
I gotta steal another old uni computer from the computer science association. Free servers
They’re given away as eWaste. Where else do they go but home servers

Not a fan of eWaste servers 😂
another dumpster diver
Except these are given to the student association to give out for free. Saves the IT guys at the comp sci department from doing anything except taking the hard drive and cleaning the devices
fancy school
I only take my ewaste if it's shiny
It’s in return for them not having to bother properly disposing of them
if only energy bills weren't a thing
eBay! I’ve never seen a seller ship the item so quickly. No doubt this will be better than my current setup at least.
They didn't use to be
so it was an antique store 🤣
that old i5 will still outperform the J4125 I've got coming in some aspects :p
some but not most
The main system is a dual X5660
my electricity bill is also less than 100$ 😁
this J4125 will mostly only need to bother with HA. Dual X5660s seemed a bit much for that 😛
back in the day when I had that old 7u quad Xeon as main heating of my student room
Quad was pretty cool, but I always preferred 8 socket or 32 socket
these were those vertically mounted ones, not sure how they'd fit more
A dl980 is a good example of 8 sockets
It's Frankenstein's monster
Superdome flex interconnects 8 chassis with 4 sockets each
M990x does the same with 16 chassis
I got my NUC order canceled PHEW. This time I’ll do a little more research before I pick one
That's far too recent @fringe moon 😂 I can't find my specs anymore, but I doubt they ran over 1Ghz 😛
A 7u quad socket reminds me of the proliant 9000
That was on wheels though
With Pentium 2 / 3
I need help. Can anyone tell me if this Zigbee dongle: https://sonoff.tech/product/diy-smart-switch/sonoff-dongle-plus/ and this Zigbee dongle: https://www.sonoffafrica.co.za/product/sonoff-usb-dongle-cc2531-zigbee/ . They do seem the same, but Im unsure. I’d appreciate any help.
the only think that's the same is 'USB' and 'SONOFF'
I know. The black one without its antenna and heatsink thing seemed the same as the other one. Thank you for clearing that up for me though. I really appreciate it. I’ll go for the 2652 on Amazon.
can anyone recommend an Air Quality sensor that integrates with home assistant without the need of further hardware (like a zigbee dongle e.g.)?
So you want a wifi based one? And where are you from
yes most likely wifi. I don't care if it is cloud based. I am from germany
Genuinely the best protocol
is it tho... the best protocol
Don't ask the Apple sheep
most practical.... maybe
I wanna see where matter goes and see if it becomes zigbee but better
Time will tell
The home app is great for family who you don’t want to teach another app to. It is slicker looking
But I avoid homekit stuff because how restrictive it is
lets hope matter won't be
I doubt it will, at least not to the level of HomeKit. Since it’s so cross platform
I should get IKEA smart globes for my bedside lamps, and also IKEA smart plugs for other stuff too lol
One aspect of Matter/Thread/whatever the hell it's called that I really like is the ability to essentially have a fallback coordinator (or whatever it's called with that protocol)
Can’t annoy my partner enough unless everything in the bedroom is smart
That being said, I'm not about to tear down my zigbee network

everything? 🤔
Foldable WiFi enabled boytoy
Well I want lights and blinds automated, should do the same for the chromecast & tv, unsure what else I should annoy them with 😂
automate the bed
Okay I draw the line at that. Could see that going badly lol
I can automate my bed, it uses Bluetooth remotes
Does your wife change the bed position if you’re there from the other room
She could if she wanted
That sounds like a fun prank
Fold it in half
Revenge for the data centre at home 😂

Hello. Any recommendations for a bluetooth module for Home Assistant Blue?
#330990055533576204 can likely tell you better what works there
i use this one that i bought with my odroid N2 (before HA blue was a thing): https://ameridroid.com/products/usb-bluetooth-module-2?_pos=2&_sid=4eaea7eec&_ss=r
I've got an Aqara motion sensor. I've used both the Motion and Occupancy settings to turn lights on/off in a room. It seems that it will often detect no motion/occupancy even when I'm in the room (despite my normal fidgeting, it seems I sit still enough to not be noticed by the motion detectors at my office, too), yet the lights will remain on after I've left the room for quite a while - longer than the timeout period I've put in the automation, and will turn themselves on at random times even though nobody (not even the dog) are in the room.
Is there any way to tune the sensor itself or to identify what's triggering it?
We do have forced hot-air heat, and I thought about it picking up the curtains blowing above the vent, but I've watched them and there's no obvious movement (we have a deflector that redirects the air away from the curtains, anyway). Could it be sensing the heat (~100°F) coming out of the register and identifying that as occupancy?
Suggestions for a cheap, non cloud, smart power outlet that can report current power draw?
Zigbee preferred
I need a couple to read the state of some dumb devices
Prefer Zigbee, I'm EU-based
Are there any advantages of ESPHome over ESPEasy (apart from standardisation of HW)? I have an AM2320 temp&hum sensor that's been running on ESPEasy(test) happily for a couplo years. Redid my whole home network recently and see ESPHome also supports them ootb, so wondering if I should blat it and redo it using ESPHome
Choices do depend on where in the world you are
Oh hahah
Sorry, I'm in the US
https://www.zigbee2mqtt.io/supported-devices/#e=power has a bunch of options then
None of the ones I'd have recommended are an option for you
thanks
I have a couple Sengled outlets that work well. I think they were $20 for 2.
Could the high heat damage a temperature sensor if I put it in a water proof bag in the dishwasher?
I imagine it would depend on the sensors capabilities, but I’m genuinely curious what you plan on doing with the temperature of your dishwasher
Just want to make sure it's not getting a fever
No but just to tell if it's on. Might be better off finding somewhere I can slap it on the side or bottom though. Might as well try that first
Can anyone recommend a good lux sensor I can place outdoors?
The Hue Outdoor motion sensor includes a light sensor
Or just connect it to a smart outlet
Hi, Is this the right place to ask a question about the setup of a reverse proxy?
No... proxy servers aren't hardware (read the channel topics)
#general-archived would be a good starting point if you're not using add-ons
Which intel nuc I should by for home assistant?
Anything that's 64 bit capable, with more than 2 cores/threads, and at least 4 GB of RAM
That's up to you
Not sure about the m2 ssd and install progress?
What do you mean?
You need to copy it as an image and not with an installer like I understand.
You need to flash it to the device, and #330990055533576204 can guide you there - it's quite do-able
I can use a live Linux distro for it, I'm able to do it.
Hi guys and girls! So, I have a boiler with an RF remote (remote model is Siemens QAA78.910) but I don't know which frequency is running. Any
My plan is (beside world domination of course) to replicate the functions for that remote with and ESP and a RF emitter.
I have googled it and I have no luck finding an aftermarket part that is capable of doing this, but maybe someone knows here.
Also, I'm going to buy a ceiling fan than I want to integrate and the ones that i like are controlled the same way (rf remote).
I currently have a pair of receiver-emitter 433mhz radio modules (xy-fst fs1000a) so I can make a test setup to see if the remote is a 433mhz or not.
Any ideas on this topic that i could benefit from? Thanks and hope everyone is having a great day
Is that a water heater with an IR remote?
Water heater with and RF remote
What country is this? I'm genuinely interested as I've never heard of that before
Spain. The remote is a thermostat really. The water heater is for water and house heating
How do you warm up your house? Air?
Air to air, water to air, ground to air heat pump
Or electric
Or wood
In that order
where do the elves fit in?
Under the sink
🤣🤣 burning elves is not ok
Say that to the noldor
🤣🤣
Thanks I'll check it out
this right here is a basic button module that is connected to my dumb electric blind motor that controls the open and close with the simple once click button. is there something i can get that lets me sotter something onto the pins of the button and control the blinds over wifi. i was thinking some device that shelly offers.
crap i can’t post pictures on this severe
Please use imgur or other image sharing web sites, and share the link here.
Image posting is blocked in most channels to discourage people from sharing text as images. Sharing text as images assumes that everybody sees the world as you do, which isn't the case. Some people are colour blind, or have visual impairment that means they can't make sense of an image of text.
Sounds like you're more after #diy-archived and ESP type devices though
but basically what i’m asking is what can i wire up to a simple tactile button switch to be able to automate it
ok thanks
Hey guys. Does anyone know. How and if I can buy a. Amazon fire 10 tablet in the EU ?
Can anyone recommend some sort of power supply that can power a RPI 3, an SSD, and a ZigBee/Zwave stick? My home assistant is shutting off on its own and I'm thinking it's the PSU since I have a standard 3A one
A powered USB hub will probably solve that
Hey guys - Wondering if there was any 'Official' high availability hardware system configuration for HA? I've looked at various cluster options with Pis and other hardware - but it all seems a bit cobbled together. I'm currently on a single 8gb Pi4 with SSD for boot and data. However, I would like to have some sort of failover system for potential hardware failures....
Short answer, no
The long answer is on various forum threads discussing it
The longer answer is that it really depends on what you're trying to protect against
(and your budget)
Trying to protect against an angry wife when it all goes Pete Tong!
Hi all; looking for someone who has successfully gotten a Nortek husbzb-1 stick to recognize thru a hass install running on an oracle virtualbox.
I have:
- Done the manual update driver so that Windows sees the Zigbee & Zwave controllers of the stick
- Configured the VM to allow all USB passthrough, as well as 2 serial ports mapping back to the 2 COM ports the controllers are on (3 & 4).
After doing all that and rebooting the VM, when I go into Supervisor -> Hardware, all I see passing through is the USB mouse/KBD. Supposedly there are entries that show up under ttyS0 & ttyS1, but I got nothin...
I'd check with the folks in #330990055533576204
10-4
So, automated backups being copied off the host automatically. That way you can recover from dead Pi.
Then you just need alternative hardware/a VM/whatever - assuming there's no other hardware in play
I use a 12V 3A power supply with a 5V 3A stepdown to power the pi via the pin headers. Also, I have a usb to sata drive connected and for some days I had a tube's zigbee module connected as well.
Already do that - backup to Google drive, and local. My issue is when it goes wrong and I'm not at home (I'm away a lot for work) - I need a system that automatically fails over - from a hardware point of view.
I also have a ZigBee dongle plugged into the Pi.
Only a couple of scene switches on ZigBee though - so that's not a game changer, most of my house hardware is wifi or bluetooth and ESPhome nodes.
Hello My raspi 3est is reaching its limit..... I have a lot of containers and especially influxdb and Grafana Apart from that I wanted to extend my installation with a start of video player and function. NAS I was hesitating between Synology and Mini pc and identified two possible models Either acepec or nipogi celeron j4125 8gram 256ssd. What do you think? An opinion on the holding of perfs and consumption?
copied from the other chan: yea that's a bit much for a pi3
personally I'm not a fan of dedicated NAS machines as they are too much of a single task kind of machine with no upgradability
the celeron will be much more snappy and responsive and it has the uhd 600 which I think is the bare minimum for hardware h265 transcoding
Thks
although if you got rid of influx and grafana it would get much more snappy those two are quite a resource intensive duo at times
Yes i used cpu quotas to limit them but it ils too slow when i start both of the two when needed . The other Times i do not use them. ... Time to sleep now ... Good nightb
My raspberry pi has a red power light, no activity. Solid green green and amber Ethernet lights
Can't find it in my router anywhere, just started happening yesterday
give it a reboot
I've done that many times
probable bad sd card
Can you plug in a display
Hey. Just checked my Amazon order and saw that my Sonoff Zigbee USB will only arrive by 23 March, which is way too late. Any recommendations for a solid zigbee USB? I guess anything 2652 right? I saw the ConBee, but the price is about double that of the of the Sonoff ($23).
(Also should I be asking the question in #zigbee-archived? If so, I'll delete the question here and ask there.)
In #zigbee-archived theres a list of recommended sticks. Tubes one I can recommend
Thanks for letting me know! I’ll delete and repost. I’ll also take a look at Tubes.
I'm just gonna reinstall HA on my ras pi 3b+ since I really need a ras pi 4 and they're hard to come by these days 😆
That massively complicates things.
There are some forum posts on doing what you're asking about, but the minute you throw in Zigbee dongles the complexity goes up. That said, my non-Pi install has never failed, and an SSD based Pi4 should be fine too.
Does anyone have any recommendations for the best RGB light bulbs for Home Assistant? I’ve been using Phillips Hue but wouldn’t mind a cheaper option that can be integrated into HomeBridge
Well, if they work in HA then HomeBridge doesn't matter, since you'll be connecting HA to HomeBridge, surely?
Looking for advice about a device to buy? Remember to provide guidance on:
- Which country you're in
- What your budget is
- What protocols you prefer (eg Zigbee, WiFi, Z-Wave)
- Any features you want (such as power monitoring, dimming, etc)
Oh, yea duh. Sorry still new at this.
Easy to overlook 😉
I’m in Canada, my budget is ideally less than a Hue bulb, I’m currently using Hue and wifi for controlling bulbs off of a HA install in a virtual machine on Ubuntu and don’t have any extra adapters.
Ikea's Tradfri range are mostly ok. Innr and Sengled are also options, at least if you ditch the Hue Hub and go #zigbee-archived
Thanks I’ll look at those ones
CT?
Ah
I'll let the ADHD kids keep their RGB, CT does wonders for the mind
The yeelight i have has ok RGB though, the Ikea is just off, green is closer to yellow and red is closer to pink
most rgb bulbs become a showoff thing

Is there a reason why Z2Mqtt decides that it can’t do CCT on the tradfri RGB or are the bulbs just not compatible with that
Damn. It’s painful trying to find the colour that’s warm white. Though currently have it set to a scene on HA to make life easier
Housemate is weird. Prefers cool white
Yeah have 2 CCT bulbs here too. Bedside lamps lol
Has anyone any recommendations for certified (Germany) smoke detectors which can be used as sirens as well? Thank you.
Or has anyone the Bosch smoke detectors set up and running in home Assistent?
Any recommendations for turning a regular single pole light switch into a virtual 2 pole? (Current switch is running a zooz zwave smart switch). If I want to have another smart switch control it somewhere else in thr house, what should I get?
I was thinking something like this, but don't need the remote, and would prefer it to be hardwired so I don't have to charge the battery
Why are you insulting me for wanting RGB?
All I did was ask a question
Not you specific no, you weren't mentioned at any point
I asked a question about RGB and your response directly after was to say only people with ADHD want RGB.
"ok"
There’s also the negative connotation you’re putting on people that have ADHD and that’s not cool
Are there USB battery packs that Home Assistant can read charge levels from? I'd like to have charge levels show up on my dashboard so I know when to plug them in
Only if they report it to HA in some way
How do people normally manage power on those Home Assistant tablet/control panel setups? That's basically what I'm doing
Are they just plugged into the wall?
I'd expect so
Alright that's probably a better solution anyway
I have had my kitchen fridge tablet plugged in for three years
Not sure if this is the right channel for this. I recently got an Argon case for my Raspberry Pi and followed the instructions in this forum post (https://community.home-assistant.io/t/raspberry-pi-4-home-assistant-os-5-5-dev-version-on-a-ssd-and-the-argon-one-m-2-case-in-progress/248025). Everything is working well, but I'm wondering if there's a way that I can get the fan speed as a sensor so that I can see historical data of the fan speed.
Is the fan speed an attribute of an entity already in HA?
i have two shelly dimmers where only one of them has button input.. so on that dimmer i use one button mode.. i then want to use the other button input to control the second dimmer.. i'm able to get power on/off working just using short button press.. but i want to get dimming up and down working over http as well using the long press.. which api endpoint should i talk to to get this working?
Not that I'm aware of. There's the service "argon40.set_fan_speed" but I haven't seen any entities in Developer Tools that have "fan" in any attributes.
Then you're likely out of luck
Bummer. Not a huge deal, but would have been a "nice to have".
I guess I could always create a Number Helper and also set it at the same time I set the fan speed in my automations.
No USB decices . Unplug them before boot
Devices
I'm using an older Pi 3 to run my HA and my memory usage is steady at 71%. Am I in any danger of something failing or crashing?
Memory usage below 95% is usually fine
If it starts going 100% constantly, you have issues
Thanks
Unused memory is wasted memory
After all it is X times faster than other storage
CPU on the other hand isn't free
Idle, CPU is at 4%
That is great
If you have a 4 core system anything up to load values of 4 is ok, above 4 you have issues
Example from my 24core system
Lots of headroom on cpu
I'm thinking of possibly upgrading, though. I have a 10-year-old iMac that's not doing anything. A fresh install of Ubuntu or Debian and I may get better performance. It's not hard wired, though.
That'll be a huge upgrade over a pi
Basically anything is better than a pi 3
Horrible storage system
Horrible networking
You are going to want something wired though
That can be accomplished via a usb dongle
That's not the problem. My router is in a very small space, hence the Pi. Not enough room for a whole iMac.
And I don't want to run wires between floors
Considering I'm only planning on adding some Hue lights and maybe a thermostat, I should be fine
I don't have too many smart devices in my house. Can't put pictures in chat but it's 3 Google Homes, 2 Rokus, 4 security cameras, and my computer RGB
I don't have that big of a house.....and my wife is very anti-smart
Other than lights and a thermostat or two I can't think of anything else. Not getting smart locks, don't have a garage for the door...maybe a smart plug here or there
My wife was too, now she asks me to design stuff

I have two rules, no smart locks, no indoor cameras
I mean, this is #the-water-cooler but I'm doing cool stuff to my car with RGB strips and ESP boards...
RGB 🤢
I agree with those
We all do. No one would like to watch atx's indoor cameras 😏

Is $100 reasonable for a six-pack of multicolored A19 ZigBee bulbs? Looking at a Sengled set but $100 for six lightbulbs just feels wrong 😅
It's not unheard of for zigbee stuff. Do note that sengled lights don't act as routers though
I hope this is the right channel. Ive got 4 xiaomi ble temp/humidity sensors (LYWSD03MMC) flashed through Telink Flasher with Aaron Christophel's firmware and its coming into ESPHome jsut fine but even though I select advertise in degrees F, esphome is getting the temp as degrees C, so HA is then converting it into degrees F, which makes it appear that my house is around 160 degrees. I'm guessing its a setting somewhere but I can't seem to figure it out. Anyone have the solution by chance?
I didn’t realise you could flash custom firmware onto those, that’s cool.
ESPHome is a system to control your ESP8266/ESP32, with a native integration for Home Assistant.
You can find their documentation here, and get help with ESPHome itself here in the #diy-archived channel (#integrations-archived for the Home Assistant side integration with it). They also have their own Discord server too.
can anyone recommend smart plugs that report back amp draw, wattage blah blah blah?
by smart plugs i mean smart switches
Looking for advice about a device to buy? Remember to provide guidance on:

☝️
switches i guess, or do i mean plugs..

things i can say "hey google turn the lamp on" the lamp turns on like magic
switches
Switch - something that goes on the wall and controls lights
Plug - something you stick in a mains socket and plug something else into
a switch, thank you tinkerer
Options, as always, depend on which country you're in since it turns out we don't have a single universal electrical standard
Ah yes, that little detail.. well I live in Australia so if the past is anything to go off it should be pretty fun finding a suitable product.
Since you are in Australia
Just buy smart bulbs
Which is what I would recommend anyway
IKEA tradfri are good as long as you don’t mind getting zigbee
Otherwise @unique cargo there’s a whole section on the HA forums about approved stuff in australia. There’s shelly stuff that hide in the wall behind the switch which is also an option (wifi based)
Is that like Chippendale's, but for smart stuff?
It's someone to blame if your house burns down. They get certification for the stuff they import.
They even sell @fringe moon’s 2 favourite HA items, conbee and HA blue 😂
anyone using tasmota lights have issues where they won't change state on command? i.e. its stuck on or off?
they always change state on command
so if I go to the device in HA, and try to toggle it, after a second or two it flicks back to the state it was originally in
Other times, they just appear as Unavailable
That sounds like network issues
I can go into the device via IP address and change it fine, however it takes a while to load sometimes
layer 8 most likely
Have you added it via IP or?
Yes
ah
Just a different topic right?
how would I trouble shoot the broker?
is it a HA addon broker?
no, its running on a separate device, a beautiful raspberry pi
lmao
zigbee2mqtt and mosquitto broker on the pi
clear retained topics related to the device, correcctly set up persistence on the broker, if using ACL set it correctly
listener 1883
protocol mqtt

thats my config file
that is enough
then you have connectivity issues between tasmota and your router and/or broker
hmm... if they're on separate VLAN's, may that be the issue?
If you messed up network routes/firewall configuration, yes
layer 8 naturally
all my other devices seem to work tho
like zigbee2mqtt devices

Is the Z2Mqtt on the HA side of the VLAN?
If so then it wouldn’t affect it
If it is the VLAN then the issue is crossing over, not if you stay within one
i def have a rule set up to allow anything on that VLAN to the MQTT broker (IP address) and ports
Do you see the Tasmota devices connecting to the broker?
What about from mqtt to that VLAN
just added one but from what I can tell anything from the VLAN the mqtt broker is on will be accepted by the IoT VLAN
Also what happens if you manually post to the mqtt broker. Will it still do the same?
yeah I can see them
send a command from HA and monitor whether it goes through your broker and to Tasmota
yep, it went thru.
i think its actually working now
working now, for now...
Final point, don’t have anyone on your mqtt server playing funny games with it? 😂
Could be intermittent by external influence lol
(But glad to hear it’s working!)
haha nah i don't think anyone would bother messing with me... unless @fringe moon managed to hack in to my network

i legit saw this guy at the shops the other day. will pm you a pic of him IRL
You saw @fringe moon the other day?! 😛
Probably was him tbf

Thanks for the talk / troubleshooting lads
and thanks to atx for temporarily stopping his shenanigans
i guess too busy migrating to a new stick
Well guess it’ll break again
Now time to migrate ONTO the other stick
time to migrate a certain someones network
I currently have a sleeping baby on top of me, doing z2m migration on my laptop next to me while typing in discord with my phone
Can’t wait for him to find what I’ve left for him
Noice 2mqtts1broker.mp4
Sounds awkward
How old now?
A month
I beat you by two months on our second

Much easier this time round, she started sleeping thru the night at 6 or 7 weeks old
Ooh never seen a Norwegian keyboard before.
But also aww. Even when you go back to working I’m sure you love WFH to be there with the little one
Yes, i was home with the first one too
I get all 40 weeks of paid leave
Since the wife is a student
milk and playstation controller, what a life
The milk is for atx

Hey, I'm looking for suggestions about implementing smart switches in my new home. I've looked a bit online and it seems like smart relays are a good solution, but I’m not sure what to buy.
Shellys? Sonoffs? Flash them with Tasmota or not? What works better with HA?
Try different things
See what you like
I skip switches overall, only smart bulbs and outlets
Also depends on your location, wiring, etc
How do you keep the power always on for the bulb
I live in Italy, and I'm working on my wiring right in these days
Smart switches will be just for guests, so if they want to turn on a light they dont accidentally cut power to the bulbs, I have motion sensors in all the rooms
Noone can reach the buttons yet

Has anyone ever come across hardware to automate the opening and closing of plantation shutters?
#diy-archived can help with that or even the WLED Discord
I have multiple WLED isntallations and the easiest way IMO to get up and running quickly is to buy a DigUno or DigQuad from @wary bluff who runs a worldwide store and through @crystal sail for buying boards in the US. They come preflashed with WLED and are super easy to use. check it out at quinled.info and both of those guys have a ton of videos on their youtube channels covering WLED, how to wire it in, HA integration and on and on. They both were a huge help in getting me from something I wanted to do to having it up and running all over my house!
Hello everyone. I'm planning on connecting home assistant to my house, but i wanted to ask for some advice when it comes to hardware. My house is rather big, and every lamp is a "smart lamp" connected trough either MQTT or bluetooth. I've gotten them to connect to a raspberry pi trough MQTT so i know that it works. I'm wondering what specs a home assistant computer should have that would be connected to about 10-15 different lamps. Also could i face issues with MQTT range, is there a way to extend the range?
MQTT doesn't have range...
I'm guessing you might be confusing it with Zigbee2MQTT?
Regardless, your minimum spec is a Pi3, which will be fine for far more than a dozen lights
Wonders if you could have an MQTT client on the space station...
I remember somebody worked out the maximum distance based on TCP timeouts
Oh haha, just out of curiosity, how does mqtt work?
MQTT is a message protocol - there's a few million articles on it out there
Your devices will connect using Zigbee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth, WiFi, etc
MQTT is a layer above that
Aha, i see
Google OSI 7 layer
Are you thinking of greenhouse venting?
Plantation shutters sounds like window shutters, that go on the inside
Instead of curtains
More this I suspect

We have them (though without the rod in the middle) instead of curtains and love them
As a follow up to my question on the xiaomi temp/humidity sensors, I flashed them with the most up to date firmware and set them to advertise in degrees C since that is how esphome was taking in the number regardless of how it was advertising. This may or may not be the "right" way to do it, but I now have correct temperature being reported.
Hey. I need a hardware recommendation, specifically a smart dimmer switch. It can use Zigbee, Z-wave or WiFi, can't require a neutral wire/has to be no neutral and it also needs to be rated for 220V power. I can't find anything. It's a complete nightmare. I need help. Please.
check out the Shelly line of products. I don't use them myself but lots of HA/SH users do. Only ever heard good things, you can wire them in behind existing dumb switches, no neutral required and I'm 99% sure they all are good with 110/220. I know this Shelly 1L is. https://shelly.cloud/knowledge-base/devices/shelly-1l/
Hmmmmmmm. I'll take a look. What happens when the "dumb switch" is turned off though? Either way, I'll look into it. At the moment this is my only leed.
You wire the dumb switch to the Shelly, so that the Shelly controls the actual light, and the switch is simply an input to the Shelly
that one won't work with a dimmer though
I think I understand. Thats pretty cool. By the looks of it, the switch doesn't support dimming though.
Exactly... But I'm stil better off than I was before asking here. I couldn't even find a simple no neutral on/off switch... Now, at the very least, I have an option.
sorry, I saw the dimming part and just got distracted when posting. The Shelly dimmer 2 works with or without a neutral wire. https://shelly.cloud/knowledge-base/devices/shelly-dimmer-2/#:~:text=Dimming without a neutral line&text=Shelly Dimmer 2 can be,dimmable LED and ferromagnetic transformers.
Question: I want to switch to Home Assistant , but I am going to use a 27" screen I have in the kitchen. So no touch input. But when I don't have an input that kindoff defeats the purpose of HomeAssistent. Anyone have a good Idea as input. Just putting there a mouse would look stupid. I was thing about custom pannel with button. But don't know if HA is so easy to setup with keybinds. or maybe anyone has a better idea.. 😄 https://i.imgur.com/DkWYGDL.jpeg
This is a home automation platform. Why are you thinking of using a giant remote?
To have clean overview of all camera's and devices
You don't need control there then
About to install a "smart" ceiling fan, hope I don't put a foot through the ceiling.
I've been on a rigorous diet and training regime the last few weeks to ensure I can squeeze my fat ass through the manhole.
Hi all question.
I have cordless blinds. Is there anything to automate those. Or should I just look into balli blinds or similar
You will need to be more specific
So my blinds that were in the house are newer cordless ones
The top doesn't have too many mechanics it just uses string that runs through the blinds
And I was wondering if there maby was a motor that could replace the top portion to automate them
My home is almost all zwave, so I'd want either that or wifi
How do you move them if they're "cordless"
There's a cord going through the actual blinds. But not like a pull string
So not cordless?
So you put a bit of pressure on the bottom and it retracts
Is it a spring mechanism?
There's something holding tension n the top
Not sure if springs or not
Is there somewhere I can post a pic for context?
Anyone have a decent outdoor zwave or ZigBee button? Need a doorbell lol
Unsure if anything exists, but could always just use a esp chip and wifi
are there any good zigbee no neutral light switches? i can only fine either wifi no neutral or zigbee neutral required switches on amazon
Hey I'm looking for some recommendations for which brand/product to buy, that can be used without connecting to the vendor's cloud network or any internet connection at all.
Zigbee
I recently purchased couple of light bulbs, Phillips/WiZ and Xiaomi. The Phillips one works offline but Xioami requires internet. Also tried Tuya products they require you to register 2 different places and create a cloud account, basically if you don't have internet you cannot control it.
Zigbee is a brand?
Oh!
