Do any of the tuya/wifi or z-wave plug modules have logic to detect when an attached lamp is manually switched on or off? My old Insteon lamp plugs work this way.

fringe moon
#

sure, if they measure power that is easily done

plain sable
#

hmmm... would power change if the plug is off and the downstream lamp is toggled?

winged knoll
#

Nope

plain sable

I wonder what these Insteon modules are actually doing

wtf

did they measure a closed \ open circuit somehow

that sounds very strange

It's pretty handy when someone like my mother wants to turn a lamp on.

I suspect they're checking the continuity

#

Not that it helps... not really

she has to toggle the lamp twice but the module sees it an turns itself on

Is there a smart dimmer on the market that has a real/physical slider that functions 'normally'? i hooked up an Inovelli red dimmer and the wife has thoroughly rejected it. Candidly, I'm a bit disappointed too - the hold-to-dim functionality is not intuitive and while I might get used to it nobody else that comes to my house ever will.

Does anyone have a smartswitch brand that has two switches on one panel? I've got a kasa switch that controls my bar lights but my kitchen and dining room lights are two different switches on the same panel. I thought about putting two single switches next to each other but they wouldn't fit with the panel. I've found some double switches but the brands I'm finding aren't compatible with home assistant.

dreamy leaf
#

My setup is that I have a Samsung WiFi with Smarthing hub integated that most of my devices are connected to. Then I setup Google Home and Alexa to link in as well. The main problem that I'm having is that after I linked HA to Smarthings, within a couple of days all the batteries in my various buttons died (a mix of SmartThings buttons, and Ikea Tradfri button). At first I replaced the batteries, but then a couple of days later they died again, completely drained. Some of these batteries cost $5 each, so I need to figure it out or just stop using HA until I can. Before I linked HA to Smartthings, I had been using the original batteries that came in the buttons for months without issue.

#

Anyone else seen battery issues or have any ideas for me?

runic drift
#

not sure how HA could cause batteries to die.

dreamy leaf
#

To much polling maybe? I just bought some more batteries so I'm planning on replacing them and then turning off my Ras PI that is running HA to see if the batteries only last a few days again with HA off. So far I've gone through 2 sets since I installed HA, but it is completely possible something else is going on, so doing a reverse test should help determine if it's really HA or something else.

#

I don't have the buttons joined directly to HA, they are joined to smartthings hub, and then smartthings is joined to HA.

#

A few people on the forums mentioned changing the polling frequency, but since they aren't joined directly to HA, I don't have the properties they mentioned (zwave polling frequency).

#

I'll post back in a week or so to report if the batteries kept draining or not with HA off. The only automations I have been using in HA so far was telling people that the dishes were clean in the dishwasher through my Google home speaker when someone opened the dishwasher. 🙂 I can live without that for a week. But now that I've been exposed to HA, I do hope to do a lot more with it in the future and I love that it gives me the option of dropping smart things hub in the future.

runic drift
#

I would guess polling but it sounded like HA only polls the hub, not the devices but maybe that in return causes the hub to poll the devices more frequently 🤷‍♂️ if you test and determine it is in fact HA causing that you most certainly should post an issue on the github about it

Hi all, got two Aqara Wireless Mini Switches and trying to add them to my HomeAssistant install on RPi4b. I have a CECOMINOD016164 HUSBZB-1 connected. And I can get the switche’s battery level attached to zigbee/homeassistant, but cannot get it to discover the button itself for pressing. Anybody have any ideas?

The process I’m using for discovering the button is to hold the reset button for 3 seconds to get it into pairing mode, then pressing it every 2 or so seconds to keep it alive while Zigbee discovers it. If I don’t do the press every 2 seconds, Zigbee will not discover it at all

There are three Zigbee options with Home Assistant (regardless of how you install it). These are:

deCONZ is relatively stable and mature with its own UI (and Discord server). It can run in an add-on, in a Docker container, or natively. Only the ConBee range of sticks and RaspBee GPIO boards are support. Known working devices are documented, and how to request support for a new device is documented too (you can't add unsupported devices yourself).

zha is actively developed as part of Home Assistant Core, using the zigpy stack, the UI also being part of Home Assistant. The EmberZNet based sticks are recommended, but there are other options. There is no list of supported devices, as any standards compliant device should work. Devices that require extra support are listed, and adding unsupported devices is documented (you can't add unsupported devices yourself).

Zigbee2MQTT is very actively developed and can run in an add-on, in a Docker container, and natively. As of 1.15 has a native UI, and it also uses MQTT for control and configuration. It supports mostly TI based sticks, with the Zig-Ah-Zig-Ah! and Slaesh's sticks being recommended. The known working devices are well documented (which usually includes how to pair them so you don't have to find the manual), and adding unsupported devices is also documented.

winged knoll
#

You just need a Zigbee stick and integration 😉

That goes for pretty much any Zigbee device

The WiFi module on the schematic appears to be 4 pins. Could that be serial / something else I could interface to with an ESP do you think?

#

I haven't opened it up yet to have a look

humble lion
#

4 pin could also be i2c, but without somone with a wifi enabled device for them to listen on the bus, you probabely won't be able to do anything

#

you will need to figure out both the the protocol/rate and what data they exepect

raw trellis
#

Maybe if I open it up I'll get lucky and there'll be some labelling by the pins....

Hi there, i'm new here and with HA.
I have configured an aeontec zw132 dual nano swith in openzwave. the switch works for a part.
The problem is that it's a dual switch and if i toggel switch 1 the light go's on, but i have to toggle it again before i can turn it off.
So i have to toggle 2x to turn on the light and 2x to turn it off.
The same with switch 2.
There is also a swtich 3, i have no idea what this does.

I purchased a set of Globe bulbs from costco a while back, I just recently converted to tasmota through tuya-convert I then used this(https://templates.blakadder.com/globe_34207.html) to fix the bulb and show the right colours in tasmota. Not sure which install you're using? If you have system_health enabled you can check Configuration -> Info, or see the following.

  • If you're using HassOS, flashed an image, or booted a VM with an image you're using #330990055533576204

  • If you installed Linux and then ran a script to install HA and have add-ons then you have #330944238910963714

  • If you're running docker commands or use a Docker manager and have no add-ons then you have #449717345808547842

  • Finally, if you use pip to install or upgrade you have #551864459891703809

Hi Everyone ... setting up my new house to be all automated with HA!! Now that I own, I'm really excited to things THE RIGHT WAY. I've read a lot of older threads on outdoor/weatherproof keypads, but I'm wondering if anyone knows of an outdoor or weatherproof keypad that I can use on my side gates. I want it to be linked to HA where I can control users and codes via HA, and where each keypad uses the same code. Thanks in advance!

#

Quick follow up, I am thinking that I might want to use it for my security alarm as well, so that's why a centralized user database is critical.

winged knoll
#

Maybe you want to look instead at a smart lock you can integrate with HA?

#

Let that do the "security magic"

drifting grove
#

I have a number of smart locks. The reason for looking at the approach I have is because my side gates are latched gates. I have temporarily used a keypad+electromagnetic lock. It works, but each gate has it's own local security, so not centralized, and I cannot log entry.

#

As HA becomes more pervasive, I think there might be a need for this, especially for larger homes, or farms. For me, I have a modest home, but I do have a wooden side gate, and I am installing this to let FedEx, Amazon, UPS, etc. to drop packages in my side yard.

runic drift
#

@drifting grove if you are able to remotely control the gate locks now then look up RF keypads. pricey but that you can get integrated into HA using an RF receiver of some type

drifting grove
#

Thanks @runic drift. I am thinking that I might need to take the DIY route. Everything else is just too darn expensive. I am confident that a combo of ESP8266, a simple keypad from China might be able to do the trick. I was hoping I didn't need to create it! 😄

When you do ask a question, try to provide as much background detail as possible. Ask yourself these questions first so that others don't have to:

  1. What version of the Home Assistant are you running? (remember, last isn't a version)
  2. What exactly are you trying to do that won't work?
  3. Is the problem uniform or erratic?
  4. What's the exact error message?
  5. When did it arise?
  6. What exactly don't you "get"?
  7. Can you share sample code, ideally with line errors where the error occurs?

idk if this is where i need to be but I need help. My S.O. was having issues with her mac dropping wifi so I split my router into two bands instead of the smart connect where it does both at once. When that happened my Geekbes smart sockets stopped working (connected using Tuya Smart). I realized i could do mac address filtering to ban her mac from using the 5ghz and force it to 2.4. so I combined the wifi channels back and brought it back to exactly how it was this morning. The smart switches still won't activate, I can't see them in Tuya Smart, I tried deleting the existing ones and I cannot see or add the devices back. Is there something I am missing or something else to try?

Been setting up room-assistant bluetooth tracking lately. It's doing a great job overall, but I'm having some trouble with the bt on a Fossil Wear OS watch; It broadcasts/is detect by room-assistant just fine with either my phone's bt off, or disconnecting the phone and watch form the WearOS app. However, if it's paired with the phone via bt, the watch seems to stop broadcasting; it no longer appears in the room-assistant mqtt updates. Running bluetoothctl directly on the ha/ra host shows the same thing; bt from the watch drops off when it's connected to the phone.

I'm not sure if this is specific to Wear-OS, my particular watch, or if there's any kind of app/setting that I could overcome this limitation with? The watch is kinda useless if it's not paired with my phone.

@fresh thicket anything is technically possible but if I am understanding your logic here, you would have the esp32 connected to your garage door and use your phone as the gateway for the BT to relay information back to HA of status and control of the garage door? One of my Schlage BE469 zwave locks is going through batteries like crazy. This last set lasted barely a week. Could constant reboots of the home assistant be triggering it? We use the lock probably 3-4 times a day. The lock advertises 6-12mo battery life.

I have the same lock on my garage door, and I haven’t had to change the batteries in months. Can’t remember when I last changed them.

@wooden mica usually those have wifi, so you just need to obtain the key

Hey team, when I connect an ESP32 to Home Assistant through a wifi extender, all the entities connected to the ESP32 become unavailable. I can see they are still there in the ESP32 logs, but Home Assistant doesn't receive any of the data from them. Anyone know why, or a workaround?

winged knoll
#

Sounds like it's not really connected to your WiFi then

green oyster
#

It's connected, and I can access the EPD through Home assistant

#

ESP*

lilac urchin
#

@green oyster - Wifi extenders are the worst.
If you and the ESP is on the same extender, it might work.
But HA has an IP that might change when you are on your extenders network, so the entities will become unavailable if the ESP changes IP.

green oyster
#

I tried setting a static IP for the ESP, but it wouldn't work for some reason. I feel it might be getting a different IP

lilac urchin
#

It is if you are using a bad wifi extender, scrap it and it will work.

green oyster
#

I use a TP link. I have smart switches connected to it and they work

lilac urchin
green oyster
#

It's jsut the entities on the ESP go unavailable. The ESP itself stays connected to Home assistant

lilac urchin
#

YEah, you need to make sure that MDNS and stuff works too...
Are you using ESPhome ?

green oyster
#

Yep

#

Yea it gets a new IP when it connects to the extender

#

I have set a static IP in the router, but it still assigns a new one. When I set a static IP on the ESP, it throws an error...

lilac urchin
#

Yes, it's your wifi extender... Throw it in the bin and get another new cabled access point.

green oyster

Can you change to IP address of entities in Home Assistant? I have connected the ESP32 back to the normal wifi with a static IP, and now it's still showing the entities as unavailable

@modest bramble if they behave the same way in the hue app you may be out of luck because they either don't follow the complete zigbee spec or your hue bulbs just don't relay messages to them in a fashion they like.

Hey everyone! I posted this in integrations, but now I'm wondering if this is a better place for it.

I'm looking for a new door lock and having trouble finding what I'm looking for. I want to replace my Yale x Nest lock with something that will integrate with HA over wifi and not Z-wave or zigbee. I was thinking the Schlage Sense with the wifi adapter since the Sense has homekit capabilities. Will that work over wifi?

I'm mostly looking for something with local control, so if my internet goes down, I can still operate the lock over my local network. I also don't have ANY z-wave or zigbee devices and I don't want it to talk out of my house.

Any suggestions? Will my idea of the Sense with Wifi adapter work?

#

smoky moth
#

Than I'm probably mistaken with that

runic drift
#

yea the flirc is IR

#

if you need both, again the Broadlink RM series would be your best bet, way cheaper lol

smoky moth
#

Is there a cheap thing like this but with an ethernet port? That's actually the reason I mentioned a HAT for a Pi as a Pi has a NIC

runic drift
#

not sure, there might be some Chinese gadget that may but thats a whole diffrent rabbit hole

#

you should find out what you need exactly and what you plan to need down the road with the cinema part. cause if all you need is RF 433Mhz and nothing else, then building a hat for the rpi will be cheap but if you may need RF in both 315 and 433MHz and need both a reciever and transmiter for both plus an IR reciever and blaster.. things add up

#

individually parts like that are super cheap but then when you calculate in shipping and the other additional things you may need to construct the hat.. quickly buying something like the broadlink is cheaper in the long run

smoky moth
#

I see

#

One other thing. How good is the full size HDMI sound output if any SBC? Should I use a soundcard HAT or is the HDMI port good enough to get good quality sound on a high-end amplifier?

The reason I ask is if you recommend the HAT, there's a chance an RF kinda thing won't fit in combination with it, right?

However then there are some without any connection issues at all as well. There is also a repeater (dual band). I've tried to spread the device across APs.. so I dont think its a capacity issue. It looks to me like the router is dropping connections or the devices are going to sleep.

I'm using the Z-Wave integration to connect a "First Alert ZCombo Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector", but I'm only able to get it to "Node:6 Probe" status, instead of "Node:1 Complete" like my other Z-Wave devices.

I've excluded it once, followed the official instructions, as well as the community instructions, but the closest I can get to "Complete" is "Dynamic":

Any thoughts on what to check / try next?

I am trying to better understand where the entity_id comes from and if there is any possibility of configuring it.

It seems that this is possible using known_devices.yml but that file is being deprecated (according with what I read on forums). Is there a way to specify the entity_id given a MAC/any kind of identifier so if I reinstall everything my devices keep the same entity_id?

The documentation says that this is possible via UI but I found nothing about doing it via customize.yaml. Reading other people customize.yaml didn't show what I am looking for neither.

Am I missing something here?

It is not an specific integration but general setup question, but I suppose that is probably the right channel. Thanks, @winged knoll !

There's no universal "this way"

well, i will do some work on my place, so I think it's time to add some tech on it
for a first start I want to be able to control the lights with the phone or switch, example: turn on with phone and off with the switch

#

but i read that some devices like sonoff uses chinese servers, i want all "locally" and maybe with home assistance have the "external" option, otherwise all locally only
what is your opinion?

gentle fossil
#

well I believe sonoff is also controllable locally but I have none, pretty much anything with #zwave-archived or #zigbee-archived is not talking over the internet for sure if you avoid the hubs.
one of the major points of HA is to make it work locally anyway so 🤷‍♂️ just read into it

daring shore
#

one of the major points of HA is to make it work locally anyway so 🤷‍♂️ just read into it
@gentle fossil correct, ut what i read is that (for example) sonoff even with the HA it uses the chinese server (at least some version) so you need to flash to remove that, and i would like to know if there is a guide or some recommendations about brands or something so avoid those problems and know what is compatible or not...

Don't know if devices is the correct channel, but how well Home Assistant alone is able to utilize multiple cores? Planning to get a 8th gen NUC to run HA and not sure if should go for the i3 for smaller wattage or for i5 for 2 more cores. HA will be run on Proxmox, but there will be no other virtual machines running in NUC as there is another server for NAS and media libraries etc...

gentle fossil
#

very much depends on your needs

runic drift
#

it's not HA, it's the addons that would be utilizing the additional cores if you use them

#

if your plan is for something like HA + Plex then the multicore aspect comes into play

viral pawn
#

currently I run home assistant in a Lenovo m93p tiny with i5-4590t which is more than enough for me. But this is a 4 core CPU. NUC i3-8109U has similar multicore performance and better single core performance, but is only a dual core CPU...

#

I don't think I'm ever going to run Plex on a NUC as there will not be enough hdd/sdd for the media library, but some addons I run with HA just for the easiness and simplicity, like node-red, bitwarden, grafana, influxdb, mosquitto, esphome etc...

gentle fossil
#

i have a m92p with a i7-3770T in it, this is overkill though and I just use it for my homelab;
a raspberry pi4 is enough for me with 4 cameras

runic drift
#

for basic HA stuff and not using anything in conjunction with it that would utilize the extra cores then you don't need them. nothing hurts to plan ahead etc etc but at the same time you don't need to over spend on it

viral pawn
#

and I have a separate homeserver that runs multiple virtual machines and all resource intensive tasks. I could run HA on it as well, but just want to keep HA in it's own separate box to have it up'n'running 24/7... With the server there are more "service breaks" when i'm fiddling around with it.

gentle fossil
#

that's why I have the pi

viral pawn
#

That's exactly what I'm wondering about. The cost of the i5 vs i3 is just ~60euros. With i5 i guess there would be a longer lifespan, but wondering would the i3 still be enough for basic HA+addons usage in 5 years or so.

runic drift
#

@viral pawn in that situation then go for the i5, better future proofing

viral pawn
#

and according to reviews with the i5 comes bigger power consumption as well. At idle 4.3watts vs 5.6watts... That's nothing in cost, but a test with 4k HEVC video the difference is 14.4watts vs 23.2watts. And if the differences with a moderate cpu load will be in those amounts that could already mean a few bucks in a year.

@dreamy leaf I said I'd post back, and I do have an update. Apparently my smartthings button battery dying was just a coincidence and my first replacement battery must have been a dud that didn't last long. The problem seems to be related to the Ikea buttons or smartthings working with them and NOT anything Home Assistant introduced. I have kept my Home Assistant off for the last week and I have already had my Ikea buttons batteries die and my SmartThings button is fine. I think I might get a Nortek Go Control and add the Ikea directly to HA and see if I can rule out the issue being smartthings or just the buttons themselves.

@rough thicket Short answer - yes - but if you have to ask that question then you should probably do a re-install sorry!

to be less glib - if you just need to change some values, that should be easy - if you need to rollback a change you made, you will need to hit a lot of tables and there is a high chance of missing one

Hi All, When using mqtt sensors with multiple entities and multiple values in the same SENSOR message (can be missing values or just list of entities) as in Ble Tasmota bridges. How do you parse the messages? Do you use extended attributes? How do you avoid entities becoming 'unknown' when a message is received without values? I feel I'm missing some insight which is making it hard to get my environment working nicely.
