Don't think so, but you can just block internet access for it on your router since it's controlled locally (that's what I do)

I have tried almost everything i can find on the net
Lates i have reinstalled HA

Hello guys! I'm looking for a smart relay with the possibility of being controlled by an external switch. I first had a look at sonoff mini but it only has 1 channel and I need 2. Then I checked this one https://www.gearbest.com/smart-home-controls/pp_3008671395852703.html and it looks nice, but there are so little reviews online and I'm wondering if there's something better. Thanks!

fluid lotus
#

hy, can somebody help me with tuya dimmers local control?

#

i have configured it with localtuya component, but with this it is only a switch....

fluid lotus
#

i have already read that, im in the same shoes, i want to conrol them locally, tha cloud component is toot slow

marsh sail

but thats all D:

fluid lotus
#

yep, that works with tuya devices with esp module, unfortunately mine has something else (idk exactly the type)

crude creek
#

So I have got myself my first smart lamps. I bought the IKEA "starter kit" that contains 3 lamps and 1 remote. These are pre-paired and meshed with each other it seems? Now, I have bought a zigbee2mqtt device. Do I need to pair with every one of these devices with my raspberry and the usb stick? Or can I just pair with the remote and will the rest come in automatically?

Problem is that my pi has a 0,5m power cord, and the lamps are mounted in the roof.

marsh sail
#

@crude creek even more work: you need to reset them all too.

#

@fluid lotus sorry :( my advice ran out

#

Anyone knows a device which has USB power that can be switched off within ha?

#

I have a dumb usb ledstrip I want to turn on and off

crude creek
#

@marsh sail so you mean I have to get a really long power cord for my raspberry?

marsh sail
#

You don't need them that close

#

My deconz stick detects stuff over two rooms away, just takes a bit longer. No clue with zigbee2mqtt

crude creek
#

I thought you needed them like 5cm close, for some kind of pairing mode

marsh sail
#

Nope

#

You need to make sure the ikea stuff is in paring mode

crude creek
#

Ah, but that is done by just cutting the power to them 6 times, I think.?

marsh sail
#

Yes

#

And your remote has something else probably

#

My experience just goes with deconz and how ikea reacts

crude creek
#

Now, OK so I have paired the first device with the zigbee2mqtt. I took the remote, and it shows up in the logs of zigbee2mqtt addon. zigbee2mqtt:info 2020-02-21 19:32:46: Successfully configured '0x680ae2fffe836023' great. whats the next step? Should it show up somewhere in home assistant?

@coarse fiber I've been looking at relays yesterday too. Have you looked at the Shelly 2? Its been recommended a lot to me, and has 2 channels

#

but not entirely sure why you need 2 channels, rather than just using 2 Sonoffs?

coarse fiber
#

@cedar venture my bathroom has 2 different lights, and my switch has 2 channels. I could use 2 minis but it would end up occupying more space

cedar venture
#

ok fair enough πŸ™‚

coarse fiber
#

Shelly 2 looks nice though, I'll do some more research on it

cedar venture
#

ah wait, I remember why I ruled shelly out for myself. Its wifi not zigbee

coarse fiber
#

yeah, I also prefer zigbee instead of wifi, I need one router to expand signal. Aqara one would do it, have you checked it already?

cedar venture
#

I didnt look too much into it, as it was not listed on Amazon

#

Ive settled for some Sonos BASICZBR3's and a higher wattage version, both zigbee, but only one channel

coarse fiber
#

I would use those without any problem, but I need the device to fit into my junction box

#

2 Sonoff would fill up the whole space

cedar venture
#

ah yeah, mine are mostly to go into ceiling recess, so Im not limited for space

#

for extractor fans

coarse fiber
#

now that you're talking about ceiling, I think I have some space on my bathroom ceiling as well. I'll look into it. Maybe add 2 sonoff minis

@turbid canopy yes you can do that, just list the child group as an entity of the mother group

snow cove
#

Thinking this might not be the right channel for this question so i apologize in advance. Long story short, a recent update (either HA or the Arubas themselves since they both happened around the same time) broke connectivity to my Aruba APs. I've been digging for days and cannot seem to figure out how to enable some form of debugging.. or something... to give me a breadcrumb as to why I am getting "Unexpected response from router" and "Error setting up platform legacy".

#

Is this an integration issue or device issue?

#

I'm not particularly attached to using the embedded aruba platform.. If there is another way (MQTT?), I'm game for trying. πŸ‘

#

Any ideas where I could start looking?

runic drift
#

@snow cove you said the router itself had an update? the integration requires telnet to be enabled, maybe during the update that was turned off?

snow cove
#

That was what I was originally thinking.. let me check that again.

#

telnet was definitely off. Grr. just reenabled it and restarted HASS. Here's to hoping it works 🀞

#

dang it... that wasn't it. Same two errors in the log file.

#

(SyncWorker_19) [homeassistant.components.aruba.device_tracker] Unexpected response from router

#

I wonder if the commands changed which broke the integration.

runic drift
#

maybe restart the router after making sure the telnet is turned on then restart HA

snow cove
#

Not quite knowing how the platform works, I'm guessing it is simply logging in, running a command, and scraping the results.

#

Oh, I tested telnet to make sure it worked first. πŸ™‚

turbid canopy
#

weren't groups (aside from light groups) deprecated?

glossy prism
#

No

#

The auto-generated groups were removed and some configuration options for groups that only applied to the deprecated States UI were removed

I'm looking to replace my regular spots in my bathroom. But I see they have mr16 plugs.

#

It looks like it's not too hard to remove the 12v transformator and put in a gu10 plug instead.

glossy prism

@bleak elm yeah, I can't imagine they'd ever remove them entirely. I don't know why there's so much confusion and mildpanic about groups going away entirely lol

#

Why is it my sonoff seem to go to sleep? I ask Alexa to turn on or off a light and it says its not available. If I ask again 9/10 shes then completes the action. Sometimes it takes more attempts. Any ideas?

#

Hey there, is this the right channel to ask about problems with media controls not working on google home? :)

winged knoll
#

It's a good enough place to start

lost matrix
#

Okay, so.. I recently switched from spotify to youtube music and since then the media controls don't work anymore, I can still change volume but next/previous track doesn't work anymore.. No error in the logs, when I click the button just nothing happens (it works with the google home app or voice commands). Is this a known issue? I didn't find anything googleing

turbid canopy
#

So it appears the logbook/history tracks whether lights are on/off but doesn’t have specifics like brightness. Is there any way to log that? I’m trying to troubleshoot some weird behavior with my lights

I don't understand this bug, it worked with Spotify but not with YT Music.. Although it's the same in the google home app, I thought home assistant would trigger the same command as the app does but it seems like it doesn't πŸ€”

crisp trellis
#

Can you replace a zha device without changing all associated automation and scripts? Want to replace a lightbulb that is referred to as device in all related places.

haughty shuttle
#

just name the new one with the same entity_id, boom.

#

anyone notice the new hue bulbs abruptly turn off instead of sort of fading out?

#

I got some newer models that run newer firmware.

#

I thought there was a setting for that but I can't find one in the hue app.

crisp trellis
#

Can you use a transition value?

haughty shuttle
#

you can use a transition value with any light that dims afaik

#

its just turning it on or off slowly

crisp trellis
#

I meant with your new bulbs? Not a great fix, but setting brightness to 0 with a transition: 10...?

haughty shuttle
#

oh

#

when I turn it off? I could.

#

I don't care enough it doesn't bug me it was just something I observed.

#

so i just programmed a hue dimmer remote for the wife to control some stuff and now I wanna get a few more remotes, could just get some more hue dimmers but are there any other remotes you guys like that have good battery life? Maybe something that lets you use dimming with lights and stuff?

crisp trellis
#

It'd be interesting if after you use a transition value once, to see what it does next time you turn it off.

haughty shuttle
#

it would do the same thing

crisp trellis
#

I like HA Android app with home screen widgets for the WAF

haughty shuttle
#

yeah

#

I had to program this hue remote for the WAF when I automated the walk in closet light lol

#

I need some more remotes now

#

wondering if there's anything cool out there or if I should just get some more hue dimmer switches

crisp trellis
#

Tradfri Ikea two button switches with automations for multiple button presses was my solve. One down press turns off closest light. Another press checks that that light is off, and if it is, turns off next nearest light. Hold down press dims all lights on the floor.

haughty shuttle
#

heard tradfri switches have terrible battery life

#

that's an interested use of the button, I may steal that idea.

crisp trellis
#

When I was messing with it so to test automations yes, but based on last few weeks of usage, I should get 6 months out of it I think

haughty shuttle
#

how do you do the hold down press?

#

does their remote send a different state

crisp trellis
#

It has that as a state. On, off, long press on, long press off.

haughty shuttle
#

its funny, the hue remote has click and hold when I was pulling it in from the hue bridge, but it was un-usable, now that I have it connected to a zigbee dongle, there is no hold with the dimmer buttons

#

they both give state "step" and each one sends a different argument with it

#

bright is step, 0, dim is step, 1

#

so I'm not clever enough to figure out how to make that dim a light lol

crisp trellis
#

So the bridge was doing that math on the backend

haughty shuttle
#

yes

#

using the last sent time i'd say

#

because that's the only thing that changes between clicks

crisp trellis
#

Dim current minus one for each step down?

haughty shuttle
#

yeah

crisp trellis
#

Current brightness that is

haughty shuttle
#

I'm sure someone could make it work

#

that just ain't me. πŸ™‚

#

I think I heard it was coming to HA anyways, who knows.

#

I bet some node-red wizardry could do it

crisp trellis
#

Look up using input numbers I think

haughty shuttle
#

part why I'm looking for another remote to play with, something that just works, I'm not a fan of the tradfri stuff though.

crisp trellis
#

I'm one hundred percent tradfrii, and very happy. Using hub

#

Not using hub. Meant husbzb-1

haughty shuttle
#

I'm an all hue house for my lights, and I've been very happy, I've never changed the batteries in that remote, yet.

#

the motion sensors are great too

#

very snappy, important for lights lol

#

hate being halfway into a room before the light comes on

crisp trellis
#

True. No motion control for me yet. Just time and sun position triggers so far.

haughty shuttle
#

I just started implementing it

#

I will probably not do the main living area since we are always in it, or the bedroom itself, but everywhere else is almost done

#

gotta do the front porch, which I will either use sun triggers for, or I might try the lux sensor

#

theirs seems to actually be pretty accurate, I have a bunch of multi sensors that do lux and they will say 0 when its plenty bright in the room, like wth

#

useless

#

if I do sun, I wanna try to use some kind of weather integration, one guy said he was doing that for when it gets stormy so the light comes on if its kinda dark out during the day.

crisp trellis
#

Was thinking about using an old Android phone for lux to try that out. Silly me bought LED light fixtures (no bulb) for everything outside last year though.

haughty shuttle
#

d'oh

crisp trellis
#

Yeah. Saved some pennies though I'm sure.

glossy sage
#

Between hue, tradfri, tasmota flashable wifi devices, zigbee devices, etc etc, what have you had the best experience using with home assistant? I am considering mostly stuff like lightbulbs (what I've started with), temperature sensors, smart power measuring wall sockets, wall switches for lights, door open/close detectors, maybe some day automated blinds etc. Though, if I am missing other useful devices to add to my planning, please do tell!

#

My most important requirement is, ideally, I want nothing to ever be exposed to the internet, and work purely locally.

#

It seems voice assistants will be the one thing where I just have to break this rule, but everything else seems doable, just difficult to dig through all the details and figure out what's the best option.

peak talon
#

well by using Rhasspy voice Assistant, you still don't have to break your local rule. However, don't expect fluency as you get from Alexa or Google. @timid kettle the led tube lights might be able to dim depending on the design. im a big fan of the leviton light switches. they offer both a normal toggle switch and a full dimmer switch.

runic drift
#

tube lights are not designed to dim. wasn't till not too long ago they even released led versions of those type of lights. if the led tub is driven by an actual ballast then dimming is not possible, if the led replacement tube also required the removal of the ballast and the tube itself says it's dimmable then you can

versed hawk

@versed hawk you'll want to look up using MQTT with mac, there are several ways to achieve what your after and may even be something already made that just runs as a background service but most things use MQTT to send the information to HA.

so as I have one kid under each arm like surfboards I can say "OK Google UNlock car"

#

or better yet, one of them can do it so I'm not fumbling for keys while I'm trying to make the other one lunch

cedar venture

yep, lots of creative ways for it to go wrong πŸ˜„

turbid crypt
#

Honestly I'd rather just move to the country so I didn't have to lock my car

cedar venture
#

but then youd have to suffer terrible broadband speeds

#

at least thats what its like here in UK

turbid crypt
#

I'll let everybody know how this little adventure of mine goes. Thus far, I have to treat everything from ESPhome as swittches, and I'm gonna have to stuff those in to a Template Lock because ESPhome doesn't do locks, and that doesn't look like it'll change any time soon

cedar venture
#

good luck πŸ™‚

Broadband is hit and miss up country in the USA, some places it's fabulous because there's nobody to share bandwidth for, and they just lay fat fiber everywhere

Hi all, I have two stale devices appearing in HA. It thinks deConz is still exposing them, but they were already deleted from deConz. I also deleted all the entities which were marked as unavailable. restarted HA, restarted the entire VM (so deConz usb was power cycled). Im using the deConz add-on and so Phoscon GUI. How can I fix this mess?

turbid crypt
#

OK- Cloud integration is totally cool with two devices being named the same thing. I have a lock named car and a switch named car, and when I ask it to unlock car, it unlocks, and when I ask to turn it on, it triggers the preconditioning

Hey everyone!

I'm one of the founders of Genki Instruments. Last fall we launched our first product to market. It is a wearable smart ring that allows musicians to add more human expression into their digital setups.

We already have a few Home Assistant users interested in integrating the device into their setups. We've made a small API available for testing. If you're interested, you can check out the documentation here: https://www.notion.so/genkiinstruments/Wave-API-8a91bd3553ee4529878342dec477d93f.

Hello to all new on home automation. I have this lumiman model LM610. How do I know if I can flash it? Also have 2 RGB light bulbs some manufacturer don't have model right now, also want to know if I can flash them. I am also starting using HA so I will reserve questions for another time. Thank you

zealous dune
#

if you have the device then just attempt to tuya convert it and you will know

sand mason
#

asked in lounge but also wanna ask here, anyone known roughly how many lumens in a Govee light strip?

zealous dune
#

don't even know what that is... any links?

sand mason
#

Its one of the best selling LED strips on Amazon

zealous dune
#

18w led strip should be around 1450lm on brightest white

sand mason
#

so it's basically the exact same brightness (50lm more technically) than a Β£80 LIFX Z???

civic kraken
#

It says it uses 5050 leds. Not sure how many per meter.

zealous dune
#

theoretically

sand mason
#

5050 is a format Im pretty sure...

#

it has either 150 or 300 leds, I believe 150 on this model

civic kraken
#

Ah, yes I know but I can see how I put it weirdly πŸ™‚

zealous dune
#

judging from the pic its 30 per meter so no that bright

#

18w is power for the entire 5m strip

civic kraken
#

But you can probably find 5050 specs and calculate the theoretical brightness. You can find those led strips from China for very cheap if you want to go with a more #diy-archived route

sand mason
#

its 5m so it's its probably 30/m or maybe 60/m on the 300-led model

#

I like at least some sort of customer protection lol

zealous dune
#

yep and with led strips brightness varies depending on color used

sand mason
#

AliExpress is a bit dodgy with buyer protection

civic kraken
#

also depending on your usage, I would recommend a RGBW strip instead of a RGB strip

sand mason
#

blue / purplish / red and neon-like colours

civic kraken
#

Few hundred orders from Ali here with no issues whatsoever and customer protection has been flawless 🀷

#

Obviously you get what you pay for and there's tons of counterfeit stuff too to avoid

sand mason
#

I plan to stick 3m (roughly) on the underside of my bed

#

And another 2m on the underside of my desk

#

also @civic kraken I believe that's RGBW

#

on the screenshot the colour palette has a white setting

civic kraken
#

you can make "white" with RGB but it's just not good enough for any proper use

#

For accent colors regular RGB strips are fine if you don't want to use them in white. 30 led/m might be a bit sparse though if it's close to the floor and you'll end up seeing each individual led light cone. Not necessarily a bad thing though, depends on what look you're going for

sand mason
#

I don't mind not having top range stuff considering this is just fancy bedroom lighting

#

I actually won't need to use white, probably

zealous dune
#

then there's no need to overthink the brightness

sand mason
#

Because if I want to light the whole room up I have a LIFX A60

#

@zealous dune Oh I know, I'm just comparing because I couldn't find any figures on the page and it kind of triggered my little statistic-loving brain

#

Wanted to compare it against the super expensive LIFX Z

civic kraken
#

For the price difference it'll certainly be worse, but the standard 5050 led strips are just fine and bright enough for that type of use. I'd probably go with 60led/m though with RGB (more for RGBW)

pure saffron
#

Wyze lock

sand mason
#

they do make a 60/m version but its BT only not wifi

oblique bear
#

wow Wyze Lock requires the wyze lock gateway

#

damn

#

they wyze investing deep into hubs

#

one for contact/motion and now a separate one for the lock

civic kraken
#

You can buy a wifi controller separately and then whatever strip you want. It really depends on what you want to do. I have some strips running from MiLight controllers and some from NodeMCU boards

zealous dune
#

controller, strip and power supply

sand mason
#

if I have a strip running under my bed and a strip under my desk, do those need 2 separate power supplies

#

or are they connectable to the same psu

civic kraken
#

You can wire multiple strips to one as long as you have enough amperage

sand mason
#

oki

#

are 1-2m 5050 connectors a thing?

#

bc my desk and bed are quite far

#

but I can cleanly hide a cable running along the wall

#

wait will they be independent or seen as the same device

civic kraken
#

Controller is the device

sand mason
#

Because I'd prefer to have desk lights separate from the bed lights

civic kraken
#

you can have one power supply and two controllers if you want it to work like that. Or just two PSUs and two controllers if it's easier that way

sand mason
#

hmm

#

is it possible to buy a controller for a brand specific model?

#

because that Govee is 5m

#

and it just so happens, my bed is exactly 3m (2m x 1m) and my desk is exactly 2m so it would be logistically quite nice

zealous dune
#

controllers are interchangeable depending on the connection type

sand mason
#

so all 5050 leds will use the same controller type?

civic kraken
#

no, it's just the shape of the actual led module

sand mason
#

oh

zealous dune
#

if its a RGB(WW) strip you can technically use it with any controller

sand mason
#

regular ol' RGB

#

They make a RGBWW but its Β£49.99 instead of Β£24.99

civic kraken
#

If you need to cut the stuff you'll have to grab your solder iron most likely

zealous dune
sand mason
#

so what are 5050 connectors for

heavy nebula
#

@oblique bear a separate gateway for lock?

oblique bear
#

yea look at the wyze lock site from the video

heavy nebula
#

oh no

#

too many hubs/gateways already

#

although the $89 includes the gateway

oblique bear
#

yea i just noticed that but still shit

#

they should've made it like the sensors

civic kraken
#

Which connectors Zoe? There are some standard connectors for 3-, 4- and 5-pin led strips. The 5m rolls usually have one connector at each end

heavy nebula
#

or use the other gateway

oblique bear
#

the keypad seems to be separate lol

#

this is just the lock part on the inside lol

#

interesting

heavy nebula
#

given that their camera and sensors are so well priced, the lock seems expensive

oblique bear
#

really? i thought it was cheap

heavy nebula
#

or may be I have me reference wrong

oblique bear
#

compared to zwave/zigbee locks

#

its 1/2 price

heavy nebula
#

there are some August locks for around 100

#

quite honestly, I have not done a lot of research on smart locks

oblique bear
#

i think at the time I got mine august was iOS only or something....i just went zwave due to the amount of control you get

#

started with smartthings and it was so limiting with what it supported and HA allowed me to do everything i wanted

#

my goal for the smart lock was to be the alarm entry point

#

we only lock the door from the outside when we want to arm the alarm...otherwise the door just auto locks after 3 minutes of no activity

heavy nebula
#

this one also reports the state

#

something worth considering

oblique bear
#

yea state is good

#

knowing if the door was locked or unlocked with a code is great too

#

being able to distinguish between electronic, code entered or manual is what i like

heavy nebula
#

something on my Amazon list for Black Friday πŸ˜‰

oblique bear
#

the battery on my schlage is really good too....goes over 1 year easy

heavy nebula
#

1 year is pretty good. Although come to think of it...locks are not doing any battery intensive stuff (unlike cameras)

oblique bear
#

i wonder how long until theres a custom component for that wyze lock

#

my parents may like it because it only replaces 1/2 of the lock so you can keep the outside looking the same

heavy nebula
#

I am sure it will be there soon

#

we should first get the wyze sense into the core

#

it has been running as a custom component for a while

oblique bear
#

yea i was gonna get that for my parents when i eventually get HA setup there

sand mason
#

@civic kraken I believe it's a 3-pin

a closeup of the Govee photo on Amazon shows an R pin, G pin and B pin

I use sonoff devices with the latest tasmota software 8.1.0 and some devices(Rf bridge,sonoff basic,sonoff mini) are constantly rebooting every 20 minutes or so with restart reason Exception. Nothing worked. Any more ideas?

Hi all, I want to mount a door sensor to my automated garage door, but due to the door design, its difficult to mount it anywhere when the door is closed. So now Im thinking of mounting the sensor so the two parts come together when the door is open, rather than when it is closed. How could I invert the open/closed logic of the sensor in HA, to account for this?

bright jacinthBOT
winged knoll

Use one of those to invert the logic

cedar venture

perfect, thankyou

do you think this would affect the battery life of the sensor, or just pretty much the same?

sand mason
#

Possible to get (preferably super cheap) "buttons"/light switches specially made for smart bulbs?

#

Ones that send a command like "power_on" or "power_off" rather than the usual kind which toggle the physical circuit

#

I'm kind of habitually used to flipping it on and off

civic kraken
#

There are wireless buttons from Xiaomi for example (Zigbee)

#

or you can replace the original switches with smart ones but that's not a great idea with smart bulbs

oblique bear
#

yea most people opt for either or wehn it comes to smart bulbs or smart switches....buttons would be best if you use smart lights and want to prevent using the light switch

azure frigate
#

Hi everyone. In need to control temperature in the house via HA. Should I get a wifi enabled AC or a device like Sensibo? Any recommendations?

sand mason
#

The problem I have currently is I'm completely on Wi-Fi

#

I guess I should invest in a Zigbee hub of sorts

#

Is a SmartThings Hub v2 okay? I understand that we're on v3 now...?

winged knoll
#

😱

#

You want to go cloud first?

sand mason
#

Oh it's more I'm on such a budget I can't afford most hubs and bridges

winged knoll
#

A USB stick will be a lot cheaper than a hub πŸ˜‰

azure frigate
#

Whats the problem with wifi? These devices dont use much of your wifi bandwidth. Unless you running wifi cameras too.

sand mason
#

so "LIFX light for Β£31" is a lot more appealing than "Hue for Β£60+Β£40 hub"

winged knoll
#

Or, Β£5 for a USB stick

azure frigate
#

Yeah Im using a Nortek USB. Does zwave and zigbee

sand mason
#

@azure frigate I use my old phone as WiFi CCTV

#

Β£5 usb stick...?

winged knoll
#

Not an option in the UK though @azure frigate πŸ˜‰

#

CC2531

#

Or similar

azure frigate
winged knoll
#

Nope

#

Z-Wave frequencies are region specific

azure frigate
#

Im in south africa. If i can get it. You can too πŸ˜‹

sand mason
#

oop??

winged knoll
#

Buy a US stick, you have to also buy US devices πŸ˜‰

#

That... doesn't work too well when you plug a 110V device into 240V

sand mason
#

I have (access to) a converter

#

The kind that actually kicks down the voltage too

#

But anyway -

winged knoll
#

Yeah, but you still then (of you go Z-Wave) have to buy only US devices

sand mason
#

Is there any point in a ST Hub?

winged knoll
#

No

sand mason
#

so like...

#

why do they exist?

winged knoll
#

Because marketing

#

Just because there's an integration, doesn't mean it's a smart choice

sand mason
#

so ST is still cloud-reliant?

oblique bear
#

yup

sand mason
#

:big_thonk:

winged knoll

i came from ST and the difference was huge in terms of device responsiveness

sand mason

so would a "ZigBee USB" (i can't find any thus far) plugged into an rPi2 running the Hass image be sufficient?

or just hack yourself a esp-01 with a IR transmitter and place it infront of the tv

Hi guys anyone gone through a NodeMCU ESP32S-WROOM board with ESPHome not connecting to WiFi anymore with "Auth Expired" errors????? Going crazy to understand why it does this with my normal home AP but does connect without problems to a WiFi extender (another SSID)

civic kraken
#

My router (Netgear) hates ESP devices as well. Refuses to connect to the main network but connects fine to the guest network on the same router, lol

#

I never could figure out what the problem is but it has something to do with the that library (correct term?) that esphome and lots of others use for login. With other code I've had no issues with esp devices

oblique bear
#

migrating from netgear to unifi was one of the best networking decisions i made in this house

civic kraken
#

The weird thing is that it works pretty much perfectly once the devices do connect. There's sometimes some issues with reconnects but stability, speed etc are all top notch

pliant hornet
#

I replaced my ISP's Sagemcom with a Linksys WRT1900ac, the wifi got worse.. I'm surprised.

#

UniFi seems rather expensive :/

oblique bear
#

pretty much all my networking issues disappeared when i upgraded

#

yea its pricey but for a reason

#

consumer routers suck once you get over 20 concurrent connections

#

my old netgear would crash when i opened up a few camera streams at once

#

it just couldnt handle the load at all

pliant hornet
#

I guess I'll have to look at it..

oblique bear
#

the real issue for us nerds is the concurrent connections....consumer routers simply cant go over a certain number even though WiFi itself allows it

#

one thing you can do to lighten the load is another AP

#

I have over 60 devices and 2 APs to ensure i have coverage everywhere

civic kraken
#

my Cisco router/modem from the ISP started dying after ~10 wifi devices. This Netgear handles the less than 20 devices that I have just fine though

pliant hornet
#

I'm just surprised that the Linksys performs worse than my ISP's router..

civic kraken
#

there's probably something wrong with the settings too in that case

oblique bear
#

yea but its also ISP router which should never be used πŸ˜›

Hello, is it possible to run home assistant on raspberry pi zero (without wifi) + usb wifi adapter? I tried to configure wifi with wpa_supplicant.conf and /CONFIG/network/my-network but no success - black image on hdmi, device not connected to wifi. Any hints, how to debug?

glossy prism
#

Maybe, but it's not recommended to run home assistant on anything older than a pi 2

#

And even a pi 2 won't be the greatest

drifting grove
#

@glossy prism I know, it is the only device which I have currently - I want to test HASS before buing pi3 or pi4

winged knoll
#

Test it on a VM, you'll get a better experience

glacial sleet
#

If I plan on only running HA/Core on the device do I really need anything more than a pi4? I know a lot recommend getting a NUC but I don't plan on running anything else on it. Will I notice any latency for routines running?

#

If I decide to do a media server or something I would get a dedicated server for that.

glossy prism
#

I run HA Core on my pi 3B+ with an SSD without any issues

#

I'm also running some other services on it too (NGINX, Xbox rest server, APCUPSD, etc.)

glacial sleet
#

@glossy prism would you suggest using a SSD over an SD card? I assume I would just get a USB connected external SSD?

glossy prism
#

Absolutely. USB boot isn't supported on the 4 yet though

glacial sleet
#

I mean I didn't think HA/core was a big installation so it wouldn't need a lot of room

glossy prism
#

You could boot from SD and have the filesystem on the SSD, but that requires some tweaking

#

SSD for reliability, not necessarily storage space

glacial sleet
#

Ahh that makes sense

#

any specific SSD that works better? or more recommended?

#

never bought an external SSD

glossy prism

Im in the US as well

#

@glossy prism i looked the PNY up and it seems to be an Internal. Do I need to get an enclosure or did i find the wrong thing?

glossy prism

glacial sleet

no worries....Best Buy has it for @24.99 right now

oblique bear

you can make any internal drive external and vice versa πŸ™‚

do they make a case that would house the SSD and the pi4?

if you have a 3d printer you could print one πŸ˜›

they are still there jsut a different name

haughty shuttle
#

any good APs that don't rely on cloud garbage or have the other annoying quirks that unifi has? I'm so aggravated with this thing I just want to sell it.

@haughty shuttle no cloud involved with unifi unless u need cloud key...you can still host the controller yourself

thats what i do

haughty shuttle

when I set up the controller it acted like it wanted an account so I made one on their website

if it doesn't connect to the controller, I won't have wireless to use the app

i login with the admin account which is the local account

i thought it was pretty nifty with how it found the AP and walked me through the setup

was much easier than i anticipated

Does anyone know if the Broadlink RM Mini 3 is supported by HASS? I'm trying to configure the Switch but I can't for the life of me get the "learn" switch to appear...

#

And I've read some forum entries about a Chinese firmware which is neither supported by HASS nor by the Broadlink Manager for Windows

#

So I'm questioning if I made the right purchase...

glossy prism
#

i have one working with home assistant but the broadlink.learn command doesn't work unless you make a tweak to the integration's code

#

broadlink.send works fine either way

urban orbit
#

Well I can't grab commands as it is right now so only having send won't help much πŸ˜„

glossy prism
#

you can use the broadlink CLI to grab the codes or make the tweak to the integration's code and run it as a custom component

urban orbit
#

Also is it just me or is this whole integration into HASS still a heavy "work in progress"? A lot of stuff seems to have changed, some said "rm3_mini" worked for them as a type but for me it just complains about it not being supported.

glossy prism
#

well home assistant itself is a work in progress πŸ˜›

urban orbit
#

Well so far it worked nicely for me, never ran into an issue that I wasn't able to solve (except Lovelace design issues haha) but this just seems to be in its really early stages

#

Also I'm really surprised that while the Broadlink IR devices seem to be popular amongst Home Assistant people no one has written an "easy to use" AddOn yet to grab and implement codes. Normally there's an AddOn for every other single thing haha :D
Wish I could code then I'd make one πŸ™‚

glossy prism
#

well the broadlink.learn service is supposed to do that

#

and again, i've got it working with what i described above

#

lemme find the tweak

winged knoll
#

Is there an open issue?

urban orbit
#

Someone already made an issue as far as I read on the Community forum

glossy prism
#

there is, yeah. that's where i found the tweak

urban orbit
#

Also would that mean that the tweak would get overwritten with every HA update?

winged knoll
#

Until somebody submits a PR that gets merged

glossy prism
#

not if you run it as a custom component

urban orbit
#

I should really get into programming heh, I already know so many projects with improvements that just a few people need but I'd be happy to do so

#

Hope that the custom_component won't break HA in the future tho πŸ˜„

glossy prism
urban orbit
#

Hm... How can I put that into a custom component tho?

glossy prism
#

you could always just delete the custom component version if it does. when you copy the files for a built-in integration and put it in your custom_components folder, home assistant uses the custom_component version

#

of course, your custom component won't receive updates that the stock integration does unless you copy the files again

urban orbit
#

I think I'll just use the official app for now and integrate it with Alexa that way heh...

#

I honestly don't want to screw around with any HA files or implement hacky workarounds hehe

#

And since the Broadlink integration seems to be fairly new waiting is probably the better option

glossy prism
urban orbit
#

Yeah I know but then it won't automatically update

Does this look good to people who know more about LED strips?

#

specifically the "RGBW 60 Leds" option, "Wi-Fi" and "5M Non Waterproof" settings

#

they mean to say 30led/m and 60led/m

winged knoll
#

What do you want for your LEDs?

#

If you want them for "main" lighting at all, look at CCT (adjustable between cold to warm white) or RGB-CCT if you also want colours

#

After that 30 to 144 LED/m comes down to how bright you want, and where they'll be placed

fleet seal
#

Hi guys, so if I have a led-strip that is ir-controlled today, but I want to "attach" it to my up-and-coming HomeAssistent using z-wave. What device would I need that connects to the z-wave hub and lets me manipulate it in Home Assistant? Hope this is'nt a stupid question as I am trying to figure out how all this works.

So in other words, I am looking for a missing link that allows me to control a diy rgb led-strip from my homeAssistant πŸ™‚

sand mason
#

@winged knoll think complementary lighting towards a LIFX A60

winged knoll

sand mason
#

if the A60 (which is 1,100lm anyway) isn't on, the strip probably won't be either

#

so they're just complementary bed and under-desk lighting for an already above average brightness smart bulb

fleet seal
#

Thanks tinkerer, I will try over there.

winged knoll
#

There's a mountain of it depends but 30 LED/m is "background", 60 LED/m is "area" and 144 LED/m is "bright"

#

But also, if you can see the strip, 144 LED/m looks much better

sand mason
#

they'll both be hidden(ish)

#

one section is going under (and around?) a bed and the other is going on the underside and back of a desk

winged knoll
#

Then IMO 60 LED/m or 30 LED/m

sand mason
#

the 60 is only like Β£3 more on ax so I might get that one

#

I just care about if it's integratable into HA to be honest lol

winged knoll

winged knoll

@rotund dragon what you should do, is copy the full code of the current addon, just rename it. So you have 2 of them

Hey Mimiix , yea you did mention it to me as well . I may be a bit slow at grasping what you mean. this - host: 192.168.1.10 password: 8346 trigger_time: 360 is the only code that I have . Are you saying that rather than call it rainbird: to change that to maybe sprinkler:?

wanton linden
#

@peak talon Yep thanks - was thinking of that - I have an M5Stick-C that I was going to use but I can't find a decent firmware

#

@glass pumice You should only need some kind of relay - @tacit plinth is correct - you need to know what kind of current you need to sink through the switch

#

Since I had one handy - I tried it on my bench supply for you - at 3v it will make a ding with about 0.2 amps

#

@civic kraken So I can record a sequence to the Broadcom Mini and then schedule that to replay? If so that is perfect πŸ™‚ Any demo I have seen only shows basic stuff .... I should RTFM I suppose....

rotund dragon
#

@marsh sail so I tried just changing the component name from rainbird to sprinkler and that did not work. Where would I find the current code residing? I found this dochttp://pydoc.net/homeassistant/0.61.0/homeassistant.components.rainbird/ , but not sure if that is the python code I need?

#

Do I just create the folder in custom component and provide it a name sprinkler and then create a file within that folder and call it sprinkler 8346?

wanton linden
#

Hi Tmidi - I know nothing about Rainbird, but, I am a developer - so what the OP seems to be saying by custom component, I think is what you have attempted to do

#

so if you have the logs from that session - that is what people need to see
Often when trying to rename something, it is easy to miss one spot where you wouldn't think it would be πŸ™‚

#

Logs are the key - so if you post them here I can look for you πŸ™‚

#

As far as I understand - you are trying to aggregate two rainbird instances into one - or at least sum their values

#

FWIW.... 99% of the time, if you are struggling against how it wants to work, it's easier to change how you interpret the data - so the real problem may be.... why do you want to do it that way?

rotund dragon
#

Hi @wanton linden , thanks for wading in on this. So What I am trying to do in integrate 2 rain bird controllers in my system. What I tried to do was just change the component name in my config file from rainbird: to sprinkler:. lol that only produced and integration error. I have no error logs concerning this component.

#

Your last statement is pretty true, I am learning that as I go.

wanton linden

So what you want really is sprinkler1 and sprinkler2 right? I don't think you should need two controllers to do that..... But hey I am a noob at this stuff so I would listen to others first :)

One thing I would do is - get your logs working - it's the only way to find out problems without just guessing. Measure, test, measure, repeat, fix/go mad πŸ˜›

  - host: 192.168.1.12
    password: 8348
    trigger_time: 360

  - host: 192.168.1.10
    password: 8346
    trigger_time: 360
    ```
#
so my logs work ....I think as I am getting error for other issues. just nothing for the second rainbird system. It seems from what I have read that the way to add a custom component is via a python file. I did find one , but before I go pressing buttons and making changes I want to be sure that I have a good understanding of how to do it and what to expect.
#
Ok so you can ping the second system ok? And if you swap them over - does the samne one work?
#
If you get what I mean there.....
#
so ping it to make sure the IP is there
swap them to confirm it is not an issue with the unit
#
then if all that works - it is because the message is only routed to one unit - then you know what the python should do πŸ™‚
#
and anyway - why SHOULD it route to one or the other? Is the action the same?
rotund dragon
#
So the IP is there, units are working correctly. HA has all the valves for the first controller showing up as switch.sprinkler 1-6 and irrigation_group1. the second unit does not show any switches at all, but it does show up as an irrigation_group2 just no switches.
#
Actually I don't know what to do with the python file. I was hoping if that is the key to making this work that someone could tell me how to go abut creating the custom component.
wanton linden
#
so
rainbird:
  • host: 192.168.1.12
    password: 8348
    trigger_time: 360
sprinkler:
  • host: 192.168.1.10
    password: 8346
    trigger_time: 360
#
you have done that right?
#
right ok I think I get it
#
so the config for Rainbird only accepts one host, that is why you need two, or you need to modify rainbird to accept two - but, someone must have done this already - it can't be this difficult?
rotund dragon
#
Sprinkler: give an integration error
wanton linden
#
so from the python you sent - if this is the controller you are currently using
#
in your logsd you should see a line
#
_LOGGER.debug("Rain Bird Controller set to: %s", server)
drifting grove
#
2
rotund dragon
#
That python I posted I found on a HA site
wanton linden
#
post the actual error you get if you can
rotund dragon
#
I don't know how to find my own python setup
wanton linden
#
What are you running the server on - a pi?
rotund dragon
#
linux VM
wanton linden
#
ok then you just need to ssh into that
rotund dragon
#
```Component error: sprinkler - Integration 'sprinkler' not found````

wanton linden
#

right so Rainbird is an Integration

#

if you put Rainbird instead of sprinkler what happens?

#

i.e. you have 2 rainbird sections

rotund dragon
#
    rainbird:```
wanton linden
#

cool ok

#

soooooooo

#

the name identifies the module too

#

kinda sucks as the IP is different , but anyway

#

so yea - it looks like if you rename the rainbird integration and re-import it as sprikler integration - then it will know it is different

rotund dragon
#

rename the second one?

#

How do I do that?

wanton linden
#

lol at a total guess

#

and I just guessed at this ... but should be reasonably close and you will see in the logs what fails

bright jacinthBOT
wanton linden
#

CONF_HOST is what really should distinguish between the two - not sure why it relies on the name

rotund dragon
#

referencing my earlier post would this```Do I just create the folder in custom component and provide it a name

sprinkler

and then create a file within that folder and call it

sprinkler 8346``` be the proper step the create the custom component

wanton linden
#

it depends how this is stored really - as I said I am a noob at this and just guessing

#

DATA_RAINBIRD_SPRINKLER = 'rainbird_sprinkler'
DOMAIN = 'rainbird_sprinkler'

#

these lines will probably define how it is routed

rotund dragon
#

so that would be where i change the name?

wanton linden
#

so maybe just copy the original and renbame the folder and it may pick up a diff name - dunno - the code I gave was for a component that does the same thing but is a tottally new component

#

so for the code I sent - you should call the folder rainbird_sprinkler

rotund dragon
#

got it and the file rainbird_sprinkler?

wanton linden
#

yup

#

no idea if it will work.... so if you are going to ruin the weed crop be careful πŸ™‚

rotund dragon
#

lol

wanton linden
#

oh and your config should be rainbird_sprinkler too obviously

rotund dragon
#

Component error: rainbird_sprinkler - Integration 'rainbird_sprinkler' not found.

wanton linden
#

hmm - did the integration module load?

#

basically - rainbird is a name - which is linked to the integration, as far as I see it

rotund dragon
#

should I not add rainbird_sprinkler to the config file till after i restart with the new python file?

wanton linden
#

but maybe I am giving you really bad advice - I think this might belong on the diy chan ? or you may get better advice there
