I have Hue Tap Switch (several of them...) - is it better to use Hue bridge and integration via Bridge to get events, or by using Z2M to get the events?

I can use both, looking for recommendation/advice

gritty nimbus
#

it doesn't have a boot button.. actually there is no button on ZBDongle-P

forest cobalt
mighty river
#

thanks.

#

@forest cobalt do you also have the hue lights, connected to Z2M?

#

if yes, are you able to effectively dim the lights by holding the button?

#

for instance via the hub, if you send too many commands, lights become irresponsive for some time, I think due to hub limitations

forest cobalt
# mighty river <@534201530895564800> do you also have the hue lights, connected to Z2M?

I have a few Hue bulbs, yeah. But I don't do any kind of dimming, tbh. At least not via buttons and/or remotes. However, yes, you are going to experience issues with the hub doing that sort of thing because HA communicates with it over the API, so it's not handled on the hub itself. So, if you are planning on dimming bulbs and such, you might be better off staying with the Hue hub.

mighty river
#

I'd like to use the Tap switch rotation

#

to dim complete room by X percent, from whatever is the current setup

#

that being said, it looks like it is better I make an update and use Z2M for all

grim igloo
#

Yep

mighty river
#

inputs (buttons) and outputs (lights)

forest cobalt
#

Yup, If you are going to do that, it's better to have them all in one ecosystem.

mighty river
#

there are 2 options, with dimmer you have on/off buttons + "volume" up/down

#

with tap, you have a rotation wheel

grim igloo
mighty river
#

lovely, I'm currently at cca 35

grim igloo
mighty river
#

how do you manage the "rooms" and "zones" to effectively reduce number of zigbee messages sent over network?

#

using clusters ?

grim igloo
#

But you can do hold down for brightness to go up or down at least mine are setup that way

#

I’ve never touched clusters that’s for binding like a light switch and a bulb

mighty river
#

so if you have like 5 bulbs in a room, these bulbs are assigned to "living room" homeassistant room

grim igloo
#

You have zigbee groups that would do the same thing of a zone in hue

mighty river
#

yes, groups is what I'll need to have a look at I guess

#

thanks to both of you, great insights!

forest cobalt
#

I would go with Z2M groups before HA groups.

mighty river
#

So Z2M groups first, which will create new entity (I guess?) and then this entity is to be assigned to HA Room/Zone/Group (whatever is the naming)?

forest cobalt
#

Yup

#

For instance, I have a group in Z2M of 6 lights in my bathroom. They come over to HA as light.bathroom_lights. Single entity and done. 🙂

grim igloo
mighty river
#

looks like I will be super busy today

#

😄

grim igloo
#

I have 11 hue bulbs in my kitchen perfectly turning on in sync

#

Didn’t work right in hue bridge but perfect in z2m

mighty river
#

so the only thing I will lose is Hue app that I used to setup colors for scenes, which I can replace by HA dashboard

#

I'll survive I guess

grim igloo
#

You lose dynamic music effect stuff

#

But i never used those

mighty river
#

ah not a big deal here

grim igloo
#

You can do that with led strips and wled / ledfx / prismatik

mighty river
#

I have 2 let strips in the kitchen and bathroom

#

but indeed I don't want epilepsy, so not real fan of these lights with music

forest cobalt
#

lol I have a few Aqara T1 led strips that do music lighting. It was cool for about 10 minutes, lol.

mighty river
#

I tried at least hue music, so I can say that it worked 😄

#

now, the last question, tricky part

#

what's the simplest way to get lights "unplugged" from hue

#

and plugged to Z2M ?

#

any clue on that?

sour shadow
#

Unpair them from Hue, pair them to Z2M

forest cobalt
#

When you remove them from the Hue app, they get reset.

#

Sometimes that fails (because Hue). When that happens, you can use a dimmer remote to reset them.

grim igloo
#

Then add sensors last or dimmers etc

mighty river
#

#

this is awesome

#

just tested with new setup

#

really appreciating the help and quick response here!

I'm trying to reset my Zigbee dongle. I've used cc2338-bsl to flash the firmware. So I did py python cc2538-bsl.py -p COM5 -b 115200 C:\Users\gabin\Downloads\CC1352P2_CC2652P_launchpad_coordinator_20230507.hex but it said : "Opening port COM5, baud 115200
Connecting to target...
ERROR: Timeout waiting for ACK/NACK after 'Synch (0x55 0x55)'"
So I used a prog "uartLog.py" to open the port. After that, I did the same command and it put : " Opening port COM5, baud 115200
Connecting to target...

I have a Sonoff ZBMini (https://www.zigbee2mqtt.io/devices/ZBMINI.html) recently installed. It flashes green. I cannot get it to show up, at all, in z2m. I have turned off the power to it to make sure it is in pairing mode, with no success. I've put another Zigbee device next to it, which has 200 linkquality, so that's not the issue. Z2M is in pairing mode. Any ideas?

mighty river
#

Does Z2M support group inside a group? I'm trying to implement "light.home" functionality, that would toggle all groups (rooms) in a synchronized manner.

Hi all, I was recently having issues with my Zigbee setup. HA could no longer see my Zigbee devices. The integration page showed an error like it had problems with the USB stick. In an attempt to fix it I removed the integration. My issue is I cannot re-add Zigbee because HA says it is already configured. How can I fully reset Zigbee in HA?

Hello, I am looking for a swimming pool thermometer to integrate into home assistant (if possible via zigbee), and to my great surprise I cannot find what I am looking for.
Do you have any products to recommend to me?

fossil crystal

It snapped in half as I was trying to reseat it.. It was in the server for years and its a bit flimsy (the body of it)

austere patio
#

Oh, that kind of broken 😄

fossil crystal

It's cheap so for now I'll let it sit on the side while I bought a new one to use and will troubleshoot the other one later (if needed)

forest cobalt
#

That's just a flesh wound... lol

fossil crystal
#

True, but the antenna came off so I need to resolder that

#

Im guessig I'll have to re-pair everything again? 😦

forest cobalt
#

What was the coordinator you had originally?

austere patio
#

Things should just magically work once you update the serial port path (assuming the coordinator doesn't arrive with network settings pre-loaded)

fossil crystal
#

It was that CXXXX one, I bought on ebay, small unit / flashed

forest cobalt
#

Wouldn't that require a coordinator_backup.json though? And yeah, the PAN/ePAN will have to match.

austere patio
#

Z2M makes one and I think supports cross-adapter migration by now?

forest cobalt
#

I think so... haven't actually done it as my coordinator refuses to die so I can get a new one 😉

#

Damn Tube and his quality coordinators. lol

fossil crystal
#

So we are thinking the new coordinate install, change configuraiton.yaml to right port an it'll auto-magic work? 🤞

forest cobalt
#

Should work that way.

fossil crystal
#

Will test and report back, thanks!

#

Is there a way to force a route for a device? I have one that is connecting directly to the coordinator with an LQI of 1 and there are 2 routers that are a lot closer.

forest cobalt
#

BUT, the end device may not stay on that router if it determines that a better path exists.

#

Also, LQI is point in time and doesn't really mean much.

Z2M -> it is not possible to update the scene config once you have created it ?

forest cobalt
forest cobalt
mighty river
#

I'm reading around the web that scenes in Z2M are more smooth than in HA

#

maybe I'm missing something obviously.

forest cobalt
short galleon
#

The buttons don't light up like the manual says they would. According to it that happens when it's connected to a hub as at that point they expect you to use the app

#

the question then is what does the app call to set it

mighty river
#

in general, I'm trying to achieve 2 things:

  • Have different scenes that I can control with Hue Tap -> this I can get easily done, but I'm wondering if Z2M scenes can be updated once they are created. Maybe I will switch to HA scenes instead
  • And then a possibility to have a motion that will put all lights to max brightness and after that back to the values they were before. I hoped a group can be used but I have to use entity-by-entity in the dynamic scene to capture the state before I change to full brightness.

I will move my ass to HA scenes 😄

forest cobalt
# short galleon the question then is what does the app call to set it

So, the app does the same thing that ZHA/Z2M does. Issues cluster commands. But, if it's paired to HA, you shouldn't need the physical buttons at all. On the device page, there should be either limits calibration buttons OR a dropdown. That's how it is on my E1 curtain motors at least.

forest cobalt
weak dirge
forest cobalt
mighty river
#

For #2, it does not capture every light separately, when activating scene back, it sets all lights to the same state. I tested with group generated from Z2M, and with group generated in HA Groups helper.

#

so the only solution I have is to list all entities, which I can live with, unless I could use the "variable" that would populate list of entities in the automation

forest cobalt
#

Dongle P or Dongle E? For the P, you'd use the silabs flasher. For the E, you need the z-stack firmware in koenkk's repo.

I just dont get this. I have some smart blinds. I have my coordinator and 4 routers. 2 of the routers are MUCH closer to this blind I am setting up than the coordinator is. If i try to 'permit join router' it doesn't connect at all. but if i permit join all, it connects, but only connects to the coordinator and then has a lot of issues because it is much much further away. I thought maybe these blinds for some reason won't work with repeaters? but if i do 5 or 6 blinds, 2-3 of them will connect to one of the repeaters just fine. i have tried everything in terms of resetting and repairing.

Hi. I'm currently using a Sonoff V2 usb stick as coorinator with ZHA on my "prod" system.
I have another VM with my dev/testing/sandbox environment. No zigbee, plain default installation.
I would like to give a try with Z2m,mqtt on my dev environment (I still have some unused "cheap zigbee bulbs").
I have nothing to realy complain about Sonof, but i guess having 2 of these will be a pain to assign/recognize/fix/troubleshoot in proxmox (🤔 ).

lime drift
# weak dirge I just dont get this. I have some smart blinds. I have my coordinator and 4 rout...

I have the same behaviour. All "end devices" that are in range of the coordinator are catched by my coordianator during setup/pairing. Not a real problem as coordinator can/should handle plenty of direct connections. I'm using ZHA, i don't have your options :-(.
"End/dumb devices" once paired will not chose another router/coordinator. So if you change the behaviour of your coodinator to only allow routers, i can assume you will lose all "dumb device" paired with it. ( my assumption ! )

Maybe someone here happens to know what imght be going wrong? I'm trying to move zigbee2mqtt from one host to another (both are proxmox lxc's). Per the documentation, I copied over the config files from the data directory, but the new z2m instance refuses to start up, because it expects the pan_id to be a number or GENERATE. In the config that I copied over it's actually secret.yaml which, according to the docs, should also work. So I'm a bit confused what's going wrong and how I can move my z2m instance properly, without having to repair everything etc.

lime drift
fierce ledge
# lime drift A backup/restore may be? ( i have done that with succcess with pi-hole LXC ) Or ...

You mean backup and restore the entire lxc? Yeah, that's not really an option I think 😅 , because I used tteck's proxmox scripts to set up a z2m container and there was an option for a lightweight Alpine-based z2m instance. So I choose that one, but apparantly the Alpine z2m version is way behind the normal z2m release so I want to move to a non-Alpine container now

So I setup a 2nd (non-Alpine) lxc which seems to work fine, but I can't seem to copy my z2m config as-is 😕

Only problem is that my sensor is now showing tempearure in Fahrenheits on the display. There is a function in the quirk for celsius x fahrenheit, but I am not sure how to set it in the device. Can anyone help me?

I went into "manage zigbee device" and selected "TuyaTemperatureMeasurement" cluster, and attribute "temp_unit_convert", but I am not sure what to write in the value. Value was empty if I tried to read the attribute. I tried "Celsius", and I tried "0x00" but nothing worked.

Ah, my bad, there's a switch in the device info, which is just called Switch, it does nothing on its own, because the device is a bit lazy, but if you wake up the device by pressing the only button on top, and then switch the switch in the HA device info, it will actually change the temperature unit.

Hey all,

Im looking for more information to force my zigbee sensors to update more frequently. At this moment i have 2 temperature and humidity sensors. Those sensors does update very late. How can i improve this? Im using ZHA as main application.

I have 2 humidity sensors + temperature sensors . One TS0201 and one is TS0601 Manufacturer according to ZHA is _TZ3000_fllyghyj and _TZE200_9yapgbuv which should not be correct i guess. On the boxes the model says TH08Z and ZTH02. The zigbee coordinator i use is the SMLight SLZB-06M

Sidenote: I could go over to Zigbee2MQTT if that could be a solution.

If it's a sensor that doesn't actually implement the Zigbee spec, it will do its own thing and ignore the above config. You'll also miss reports if your sensor can't communicate reliably due to interference or range issues.

I have some motion sensors that do not trigger and I was reading about the binding process, never had to do this before but since I've changed my coordinator, it seems some things like button actions/click or motion sensor occupancy shows N/A

Binding is a direct connection between a sensor entity and an action entity. So the motion sensor would always turn on the light for example.

#

Hi all,

Question, are there any benefits to connect the SLZB-06M to USB rather then over ethernet?

dusky flint
#

As I asked about before here I've got troubles with my mesh. I suspect that the coordinator can't handle more devices. In z2m, can you force devices to route through other devices? From what I've read you can, but it's no gurantee that they stay on that route - meaning it would be somewhat meaningless. Can you force it?

sour shadow
#

Correct, you can't - that's just how Zigbee works

#

Of course, if the coordinator can't handle that many directly connected devices then they simply won't be able to connect to the coordinator

dusky flint
sour shadow
#

Depends on the device

#

Generally speaking though if that route is "full" they wouldn't have been able to connect via it anyway, so it's not a problem

dusky flint
#

Right

forest cobalt
#

Or they would connect and then drop.

dusky flint
#

I have a bit of a whack-a-mole situation at the moment. One device drops off, and if I repair it, another device becomes unavailable

sour shadow
#

What coordinator do you have, and how many devices (count routers and end devices separately)?

dusky flint
#

Sonoff Dongle Plus E

#

29 mains powered and 19 battery devices

sour shadow
#

That should be good for way more than double that

dusky flint
#

Maybe I can see actual routers somewhere

#

Yeah I also have a hard time beliving that is the issue

#

Viewing the map, about 20 of these devices go directly to the coordinator

sour shadow
#

That's fine

forest cobalt
#

That's what I said yesterday... The only thing I can think of is the coordinator might be having issues itself. It's been flashed to 7.4.x, so I dunno on that one.

sour shadow
#

You're likely good for between 50 and 100 direct children

forest cobalt
#

On the E? Is it the P that's weaker?

sour shadow
#

The P is good for 50

#

I've got a P and have about 100 devices in total, 20 to 30 are routers

dusky flint
#

Any other ideas what I could do for troubleshooting_

sour shadow
#

The usual stuff (see the pins for detail):

  1. USB extension cable?
  2. WiFi (inc the neighbours) clear of the Zigbee channel
  3. Fresh batteries
#

etc

forest cobalt
#

Ok, that's in line with what I thought. The P can only do 20-30 routers. I had thought the E was slightly higher than that at 35-40, but I'm not finding anything for concrete stats on that..

sour shadow
#

People have 50+ routers on the both without problems

forest cobalt
#

Huh... good to know.

sour shadow
#

It's all down to the environment and devices - some are so chatty that one breaks a mesh

#

Plus Osram's older devices just break meshes

dusky flint
sour shadow
#

You've eliminated problem devices?

#

No Osram (other than the new Zigbee 3.0 stuff)?

#

No Sonoff or Tuya routers?

dusky flint
#

What is Osram? A brand? In that case, no to all of the above. I have a Frient power meter that might be the issue

sour shadow
#

Yes, a brand

dusky flint
#

Can you limit how often a device is allowed to report in z2m?

forest cobalt
#

Yeah, in the Reporting tab of the device.

dusky flint
#

I'll give that a go!

sour shadow
#

Not all devices will honour that

dusky flint
#

Whats a decent min rep interval for a power meter?

sour shadow
#

Depends on how many there are

#

Once a minute if you've only got a few

dusky flint
#

Yeah it's for all of the mains, the kind that counts flashes on the main power meter (it's surprisingly accurate)

#

The power sensor in HA still seems to update every 4-5 seconds. Do I need a restart for it to take effect?

sour shadow
#

Try maybe changing that min change threshold too

dusky flint
#

Nope :/ Still the same

#

Anything else you can do to limit it?

sour shadow
#

Don't buy Zigbee power monitoring devices?

#

It all comes down to whether the device will accept the settings you want

dusky flint
#

It's my only option at the moment as I don't have wifi/lan coverage at the place of the electricity box

#

I also receive a lot of these in the z2m logs. What does indirect transaction expiry mean? 2024-07-18 13:58:18zh:ember:ezsp: Received network/route error ROUTE_ERROR_INDIRECT_TRANSACTION_EXPIRY for "35722".

forest cobalt
#

I'm just going to throw this out there, but maybe it's worth it to get a better coordinator? IIRC, you were going to look at either Tube's or SMLight's coordinator? (Can't remember off the top of my head and can't be assed to search lol)

dusky flint

Yeah probably. Need one thats not PoE though and got a bit stuck there. The skyconnect is cheap here...

Yeah I downloaded some network scanning app when setting up the network, but its been a while. And I've gotten new neighbors since 😆

forest cobalt
#

You need to look at both your WiFi channels AND your Zigbee channel.

#

Although, if you can change your AP(s) to something like 1,6 and then set Zigbee to something like 20, you might be ok. Really depends on what the WiFi scan shows.

dusky flint
#

Yeah I'll have a look

#

Any recommended tools for this from the top of your head?

#

As I'm reading through the pins... and preferably something thats not $500 a year 😄

forest cobalt
#

For WiFi scanning? I use Wifiman (I have a Unifi network). But, you can download pretty much any of them that have decent ratings and get a scan done.

dusky flint
#

I'm using channel 15 for Zigbee atm

#

Which would be the most available spectrum, if I'm reading the zigbee/wifi comparision image in the pin correct

sour shadow
#

25 or 26 would probably be better

#

26 if all your devices support it, and you're not in North America

forest cobalt
#

I was going to suggest trying channel 20, watching it for a day or two and if you're still having issues, try 25. I have never had good luck with 26, at least if you have Hue devices.

dusky flint
#

I could also get in between 8 and 9, that would be 20 for Zigbee right? FerNet is my network so I could change that.

forest cobalt
#

I have my 3 APs set to channels 1 and 6. I rarely see anyone use channels 8 or 9, tbh.

dusky flint
#

Maybe I need to do some nightly missions to change their channels smile

dusky flint
#

As there seems to be a empty file between 8 and 9 then

#

Maybe I'll just move to a cabin in the woods

forest cobalt
#

Yeah, try channel 25 and see how that works for a couple of days.

dusky flint
#

Nothing better to do with a sunny vacation day than repairing all zigbee devices

#

🙂

forest cobalt
#

Also, keep in mind that channels are for 2.4ghz only. So, if most of your devices are on 5ghz, you could move your AP channel(s) to 1 or 6.

I need some help, I don't know what is wrong here. I have some zigbee blinds. In the master bedroom there are 5 blinds and 3 shades. The coordinator is about 15 feet away and there is a repeater right outside the room. ALL 3 shades pair fine. 4 of the 5 blinds pair fine. no issues, great lqi, literally perfect. The 5th blind though will not pair no matter what. I have reset it completely, tried to repair multiple times, plugged it in to the wall to ensure its charged fully. I can get alexa to discover it with "alexa discover devices" so i know it is working (and yes i remove it from alexa after). I don't know why this 1 blind out of every single one in my house won't connect 😦

raven jewel
#

Are you pairing it generally, or directly to a repeater?

weak dirge
#

nearly every blind in that room connects directly to the coordinator

#

i have permit join (all) but it doesn't pair at all, it doesn't even appear and then fail or anything

raven jewel
#

Try pairing it to the repeater instead of the coordinator

weak dirge
#

No luck either

weak dirge
#

i really dont get this. it pairs and responds fine to alexa. my only thought now is somehow creating a switch and triggering a routine in alexa just for this one dang blind!

raven jewel
#

It's possibly faulty, or perhaps it's really getting stuck and binding into a default group somewhere instead

weak dirge
#

i would assume if it is binding into a default group it would exit pairing mode which i can observe from it flashing blue. when i try to pair it to z2m it simply times out after 2 minutes.

raven jewel
#

Honestly, it sounds like bad hardware

#

What brand is this?

weak dirge
#

I have 27 of these blinds in my house, 26 of them work fine.

forest cobalt
#

Yes, but this one could potentially be bad or a dud.

#

How long have you had them? Is it possible to contact the company for support? If 26 are working and 1 isn't, that sounds like it's a problem with the blind and not with Z2M.

weak dirge
#

Like I said though, it connects with no issues to Alexa and i can control it 'alexa open right blind to 50%'. afaik alexa uses zigbee as zigbee is the only radio on this blind

raven jewel
#

It may be the channel Alexa is using

weak dirge
#

I have reached out to them for support but who knows when they'll respond

raven jewel
#

It's possibly bad hardware in that it's not properly wired so not seeing all the channels

#

I would exchange that device for another.

#

Personally I like my IKEA blinds

weak dirge
#

I like light filtering blinds that I can close for privacy or open for more light but still have privacy

raven jewel
#

They definitely have those too, I have one hanging in my kitchen window

weak dirge

Hm, maybe not currently? I just checked their website.

raven jewel
weak dirge

Ya those are not the same as what I have. My blinds have 2 inches of sheer fabric and 2 inches of thicker fabric. you can see out through the sheer fabric. you can roll them back the other direction and it will 'close' so it is all thicker fabric and you can no longer see out.

raven jewel

Ok, but you have dodgy hardware that needs replacing. Either way, that's not something we can help with here. That's a "get the vendor or manufacturer to replace it" problem.

I have HA installed in my TrueNAS server, so I think something like the Yellow would just complicate things

fossil crystal
winter lance
#

The SkyConnect says "Zero Setup, Automatically detected"

fossil crystal
#

You can plug into server running HA and use add-ons etc.. I dont do this however, I have a separate "broker" where my Raspberry Pi has my Zwave and Zigbee dongles + their software running and Mosquitto broker (MQTT) which integrates with HA over the network. My HA runs in VM so its completely separate from the hardware.

winter lance
#

Yeah, mine is running in a VM as well

junior ridge
#

So I have a couple of thirdreality zigbee temp/humidity sensors, and there's an odd thing that I'm seeing. Want to see if what my hypothesis makes sense.

#

Have the thirdreality sensor next to a govee BT sensor that we were using before, as a way of comparison in a grow tent. They both show the humidity is stable at around 90%, as expected. Govee is updating regularly, but the TR one reported temp 5 minutes ago and humidity 2 hours ago. Is it likely that they fine tuned the software to only report humidity changes when there's actually something to report? Likely to reduce network congestion?

Feels very overwhelming to get started

I like to think I am fairly tech savvy, but I haven't messed with Raspberry Pi before. Just didn't have a need. Give me a good guide and I am good to go, a lot of what I have seen are either way too vague and only gets me half there, or WAY too specific to the point it's completely NOT useful

Z2M ?

Z2M = Zigbee2MQTT (the sofware), we get tired of typing the whole thing out.

Ok, well guess I should dive into Pi. I think I need one for a DakBoard project I want to do, so might as well get started.

#

Raspberry Pi 4 Model B/4GB good to run MQTT, Z2M, Zigbee and Zwave?

supple moat
#

Should be fine, Im pretty sure mine is a Pi3 and runs fine wiht a zigbee stick. This server is a good resource, but it should be pretty simple once you get HA running on the Pi. Just plug in a USB zigbee stick and get the ZHA integration, things will pair to your HA instance from there.

winter lance
#

I have HA running in a VM on my TrueNAS server.

supple moat
#

If the HA instance is exposed to USB ports, you can just plug a zigbee stick into it

#

I dont bother with Z2M, I just use a Sonoff zigbee USB stick and ZHA within Home Assistant

winter lance
#

That's what I was looking at

supple moat
#

Yup, thats the Sonoff stick I have (or close to it)

#

I run HA on a Pi and plug that in and my zigbee devices connect directly to HA

#

if youre running it on a NAS server, you can just plug the stick into there (assuming you dont have it in docker or something)

winter lance
#

No, it's a VM image HomeAssistantOS or something like that

supple moat
#

If its running in a VM, make sure your VM can see and access USB ports. If it can, you can just plug the stick into the server.

winter lance
#

Yup. I can do a USB passthrough.

And check if, after a minute, turning on the switch also turns on the light.

lime drift

I'm affraid, there is no real way to "debug". Try your best to:

  • put your coordinator ( could be a usb dongle or a bridge) at the most strategic place.
  • have a least one zigbee powered device on each room ( 1 wall => minimum 1 zigbee to repeat the signal).
  • Add more zigbee to have more alternate routes availables.
  • I'm always adding zigbee with their closest router ( who knows , it cannot hurt ).
Bulbs does a descent job. Nothing to complain with hue bulbs.

Hey folks. Starting in the morning yesterday my two IKEA Tradfri smart plugs abruptly stopped being available to my Zigbee network. They haven't been able to connect, even after I tried manually resetting them via the recessed reset button.

Since then, most of my assorted Zigbee bulbs and Centralite sensors have become unavailable, and I've been unable to repair them manually. I'm getting a MAC Channel 225 error. However, some other zigbee devices still work.

I'm using the ZHA configuration. I use a SONOFF Zigbee 3.0 stick that's connected into a Raspberry Pi 4 that uses a SSD for memory.

How can I start diagnosing and fixing this?

austere patio
austere patio

I would add another one and move your stick as far away from it as possible. The error specifically means you have too much RF interference.

Many USB 3.0 devices, especially SSDs, emit a lot

knotty flint

I'll try that. That makes some things clear as I had tidied up my wires recently and the Sonoff stick is now closer to the Pi. Also, the SSD is a recent upgrade (last week).

#

I think that's an extremely plausible issue cause and solution, thanks. I'll try again tonight.

I also have a Zwave stick and a matter stick (3 total). Should they all just be as far away from each other as possible? I'm thinking about how to change their positions.

#

The Sonoff Zigbee stick used to be approximately 6 feet away and is now within 18 inches (needed to reorganize the shelf they were on)

austere patio
#

It won't hurt. Z-Wave is on a different frequency so it shouldn't matter and theoretically your Thread stick should impact your network no more than any other Zigbee device in the same spot (it's the same low-level protocol).

Even if Z2M is hosted externally, the devices in HA are what get shared to Alexa/Google.

Oh, I should've said, if it's still controlable when HA is down

forest cobalt
#

Ah, no.

Thanks for your help guys

Why zigbee lamps, from ikea for example, have to be unpaired from ikea HUB before they can be paired with HA yellow?

grim igloo
#

it just be like that

forest cobalt
#

They technically don't (you can use the Ikea integration), but they can only be paired to one controller at a time.

recommended zigbee coordinator so I can start using aqara string lights?

sour shadow

Tube or SMLight

midnight lintel

lol

sour shadow
midnight lintel

hm, not as inexpensive as I'd hoped

forest cobalt
sour shadow
#

You'll spend way more on devices

midnight lintel
#

I may just get cheap string lights for her for now and then wait to go down the rabbit hole for real

#

but $16 to have something functional by the weekend is probably best for right now

#

if my HA box has a spare USB port, would the sm light 07 device be a good, cheaper alternative or am I losing something else important by going with the 07 over the 06?

#

looks like z2mqtt recommends the cc2652 chip. the 07 model with that is th cc2652p7 and I'd lose zigbee to ethernet and zigbee to wifi. so I guess that's bad

sour shadow
#

That's a little outdated

#

Z2M has active support for the EFR chips as ember

#

ember is probably the future

midnight lintel
#

oh, ok. I'm looking at the smlight site and I see the M model has the efr32

#

this place has both, about the same price:

#

as long as the cheap one from amazon tides the kid over while I wait for that and set it up

sour shadow
#

MGM21 is the "old" but still good model

#

MGM24 is the new higher RAM model, which has been reported stable at 300+ devices

midnight lintel
#

unless I can sleep on those devices, I can't imagine having room for that many. wow

#

interestingly, smlight ranks the mgm24 as low on their list

#

cc2652p and mg21 tied for 1st, then cc2652p7, then mgm24, then cc2674p7

sour shadow
#

Yeah, but the ember dev has different experiences with the 24

#

So... one or both are correct 😄

midnight lintel
#

so cost, lead time, etc being equal, as a relative noob wanting to be somewhat futureproofed, but prioritizing relative ease of setup/use, you'd recommend the mgm24?

sour shadow
#

Yes

#

That's what I'd buy if I was buying now

#

At least this month, until something newer and better comes out 😄

midnight lintel
#

ok, looking for one of those on aliexpress now

Bonus, tube is here and often helps people

man, even pricier. but I guess it helps to be able to the hassle the guy when I can't figure it out

Does Zigbee have a Z-wave type of Network Wide Inclusion? Meaning, if I have a mains powered zigbee device, will new ones perform network inclusion?

forest cobalt
fossil crystal
#

hmm that seems like a problem because if you have a really far away device that you can't move.

forest cobalt
#

Then you need to put a router closer to that device.

#

Or go with a protocol that supports long range like ZWave LR or LoRA.

fossil crystal
#

Weird protocol. Wonder why it doesntn support something so logical like Zwave supports. It goes against mesh technology to make sure your router/coordinate it in the middle of your mesh 🙂

#

Meaning, it should get stronger and stronger as powered devices enter the network ala zwave.

raven jewel
#

You can pair devices via specific routers, or you can let them choose.

#

Some devices you don't want to let choose, as they'll grab whatever they think is best and then never change, so for those it's advisable to pick a sensible router on their behalf.

fossil crystal
#

hmm so zigbee doesn't use mains powered devices as routers? You have to put more actual coordinators in the home?

#

Maybe I'll move away from zigbee, it's been quite problematic for me vs zwave which just works

#

@forest cobalt @raven jewel thank you for your responses!

raven jewel
#

I say almost always, because there are exceptions, notable ones include light switches without neutral.

fossil crystal
#

hmm ok that's what I was asking and now you confirmed. So its not truly Zwave-style NWI but rather, you are pairing say a motion sensor to a light switch instead of the coordinator.

raven jewel
#

You can do that.

fossil crystal
#

if it chooses the wrong router or closer one. Now the question is, how do you know? Because right now all of my motion sensors seems to be trying to. be interviewed by my Sonoff but are failing.

raven jewel
#

You can see a network map.

fossil crystal
#

Ok so my motion sensors are connecting "through" my plugged in wall switches (they are blue on the map)

#

Which works like a zwave setup essentially, at this point I dont care what is connected to what... that's the point of a mesh i.e. let it figure it out itself

#

I just want to pair and use the devices

raven jewel
#

Yes. Most of the time just let the network figure itself out.

fossil crystal
#

Now I need to figure out why these 2 motion sensors I have are not pairing. I'm right next to the coordinator. They show up but then show null values for alot of things like battery, occupancy etc.. and dont seem to work as expected. Could be bad modules.

forest cobalt
fossil crystal
#

The Ikea ones are fine, its just these 2 that are a PITA

forest cobalt
#

Yup. Those are OLD Zigbee 1.0 devices. They might be Zigbee1.2, but I doubt it.

fossil crystal
#

No way to get them to work?

raven jewel
forest cobalt
#

Try pairing them to a router and see. But honestly, I’m not certain they’ll work or even stay connected.

#

I had them back in 2018/2019. They were good-ish at the time, but struggled to stay connected.

fossil crystal
#

They are showing up in my UI, just with a bunch of null values. I think I've tried to pair things 2 devices 30x times now. Probably good time to move on I supppose 🙂

forest cobalt
#

But also yes. Let the past die. There are MUCH better sensors now. 😊

fossil crystal
#

Thank you to both of you!

#

Just ordered Aqara motion sensors... nice attachment on them too for the wall unlike these that have to sit somewhere.
