#

I've never seen that irl

#

And i work on pretty... Intensive use systems

late gate
#

The other one is at 99%

#

this is pro versions too

clear ferry
#

Either wrongly used or horrible quality

#

You should probably have opted for WI drives

late gate
#

at least I managed to stop it before it crashed the write and read cyclus as on synology you can get a full raid crash if the r/w cache fails

clear ferry
#

Synology

late gate
#

they work great for what I use it for. plex, plex, plex

clear ferry
#

ZFS or bust

late gate
#

I dont disagree I would like to see zfs. they run btrfs

#

or ext4 option

clear ferry
#

Btrfs is fine, but I hate the syntax'

#

Ext4 is also fine for static data

#

ZFS is just allround great for anything

late gate
#

I bought an expansion unit for my synology im thinking to run my cameras on ext4

#

dont think btrfs is the best for cameras

#

synology uses a heavy modified version of btrfs so it works great, but a bit slowdown vs ext4

#

Going to watch Jimmy Carr today btw - need some political uncorrectness

clear ferry
#

ZFS would be great for cameras

#

Memory written, disk flushed

forest edge
#

always funny when someone makes a youtube video of something they created completely diy then no more than a week later make another video about how the parts are no longer available and something along the lines of trying to find a "good enough" replacement

late gate
#

@clear ferry Sure ZFS is good for much, but I dont want to build a NAS. Now I have a NAS with a total of 10 bays that run cameras, plex, sonarr, radarr, nzb, torrent, http proxies, z2m, influx, mysql, logserver and a bunch other stuff at a fraction of the electricity cost of a PC driven NAS like unraid or something. I got unraid licenses, but not using them. My next step is to install the 5 bay expansion (wrongly priced on komplett so I bought it), and put in some more RAM. It barely using 2-3GB ram with everything im running now, and the camera system barely touch the CPU, but going to run it with 12GB ram that will be plenty. Also super easy with the integrated off site backup solution

clear ferry
#

Synology is ridiculously priced compared to what you get

#

I'll keep my 220w system thank you, albeit it is 14 years old, but it runs everything I throw at it, and more, and can be expanded easily

late gate
#

synology is absolutely overpriced yes

#

but the software is very good

#

hardware wise its meh

#

ok enough they offer amd with 32gb ram now, but no hardware transcoding so its a no for me

#

I paid 2500 for the ds1520 (5 bay) and 2000 for the dx512 (5 bay expansion module) on wrong komplett price so I was lucky

clear ferry
#

I paid 1500NOK for the R510 including shipping from the us, I already had the CPUs and the memory, I added an old msa20 to it last month, currently it has 12 3.5" bays and 26 2.5" bays

#

Currently populated with 4x10 + 4x6 + 4x2 + 2x300(sas) + 8x600(sas) + 8x1.92TB(SSD)

late gate
#

Im at the level im done tinkering with hardware. I have a tower with an i7 and 32gb ram sitting there that would be perfect for a nas, but when i have the synology i see no point moving.

clear ferry
#

Do I tinker if it just keeps on running? Except the fortnight updates I run?

late gate
#

I dunno, just saying im happy with my setup except it eating up cache drives. Maybe its reklamasjon, should the nvme not last longer than a year?

clear ferry
#

Well, yes

#

Under normal circumstances

#

It isn't just reklamasjon, it's garanti

#

You can try at least, they'll probably say you passed the daily allowed data writes

#

This is why we have RI, WI, MU drives

late gate
#

I guess a normal nvme is not meant for cache

#

Its barely a year old

clear ferry
#

Cache drives is so 2007

late gate
#

A lot say its no need unless its used as a file nas with many users not my usecase

#

So i might drop the cache

clear ferry
#

Your performance will probably plummet since it isn't using a CoW filesystem

#

Just doing some snapraid similar stuff in proprietary software

late gate
#

Lets see. I dont think plex is even hitting the cache. I have all metadata on an ssd (2x 2gb ssd)

#

Rest is 10tb 7200 drives

clear ferry
#

Plex isn't that io intensive tbh

#

Unless it is transcoding

#

Metadata offload to SSD is quite a waste

#

Since it is mostly static data

late gate
#

Luckily hardware transcode

#

I used the ssd originally with the home assistant mysql issue

#

Now that its fixed i might retire the ssd

clear ferry
#

SSDs are quite affordable these days, for a docker ecosystem overall it makes sense, low data footprint, fast deployment

#

Media on rust is fine

late gate
#

Well I could migrate docker to them

Parking can be painful if you live near a big city or are somewhere very popular. I have a colleague who pays more for parking at his local train station than I do for my return train trip to my local office. Quite a lot more at that ablobjoy

fathom sparrow

it's nearly impossible to do now-a-days and all IDE's have built in ways to grab packages.

midnight adder
#

its not the software that in house its the threat sigs, anyone can build them based on packet caps. the software itself is all China

fathom sparrow
#

it would be irresponsible for developers to build a logging engine, for example

void mortar
#

theres no way the threat sigs are all inhouse

#

they are using paid definitions + inhouse ones for sure

#

nobody rebuilds the house thats already built

midnight adder
#

I know this because I found a nasty bug in PANOS and had to sit thru a call with the software engineers and listen to them yell at eachother in Chinese while trying to troubleshoot the issue... turns out to fix the bug they had to break something else that reduce the number of supported sessions the device could handle... I 100% blame agile dev for the crap being deployed into production now days

void mortar
#

how did they break session limits 😐

midnight adder
#

we are all beta testers and we pay tons of $ to do it

void mortar
#

yep, all these firewall companys make their end-users beta test

#

I know because I used to work support for one, the techs never got the firmware before the end-customer

midnight adder
#

dunno... when the fix came out it had the side effect of reducing session limit by 20 or something like that. but only for that specific hardware

fathom sparrow
#

all companyes make end-users beta test: FTFY

void mortar
#

customers would upgrade to the latest release, and the techs had to figure out what broke after the fact.

midnight adder
#

agile dev is a mistake.... waterfall was so nice but people want things faster so here we are

void mortar
#

agile is the bane of stability

#

I guess theres a reason ciscos older stuff was renown

#

their newer shit like Meraki, not so much

midnight adder
#

omg Meraki... I got a free switch that came with a 3 yr license... i enjoyed busting it up and tossing it in the trash... who wants a switch that disables itself when the subscription expires

void mortar
#

right?

#

and a lot of companies are pushing toward that route

midnight adder
#

at least turn into a dumb switch that still works, what a scam

void mortar
#

they want to lock you into their ecosystem, and then take it all away from you if you don't pay up their ever increasing licensing fees

midnight adder
#

yeah and they can increase the renewal costs each year

void mortar
#

meanwhile, the company is being sold off to the next angel investor or other shit tier company like Thoma Bravo.

#

little by little, the US based support is gutted and replaced with techs in India with little to no training.

midnight adder
#

dont forget that useless "premium" support is an extra $30,000.00 per year per device and in some cases required to be compliant

void mortar
#

that "Premium" support doesn't even give you a different tech in most cases

#

its just the same guys as non-premium, but moves you to the front of the call queue lol

midnight adder
#

I am in the wrong business.... I need to come up with a pretty dashboard that does nothing and sell it for tons... i dont even have to provide any support after the check clears

void mortar
#

I like the other side of that coin, the hardware replacement programs that companies have

#

where you pay upfront for faster rma/replacement if something is wrong

midnight adder
#

I like to ask the vendor " hey i am going to give you half a million dollars to renew can you at least send my team some shirts or something" they almost never do

void mortar
#

and all it is, is the cost x 2, you're basically pre-paying for a replacement box.

midnight adder
#

yep lol RMAs.... fun times

void mortar
#

yea, they phase out the free schwag when the company moves from "startup mentality" to "profit as much as possible mentality"

#

and all the veteran support techs that know everything jump ship to better pay

midnight adder
#

yeah, they get purchased by another company and the vets bail and now its worse because nobody knows the product when you need help

void mortar
#

then you get the managers that come in that are all about metrics metrics metrics

midnight adder
#

strange things going on lately too... Broadcom/VMWare? Blackberry/Cylance? I guess anyone with money wants to get in

void mortar
#

yea, their buying up all the known profit centers

midnight adder
void mortar
#

you know their just gonna slim down everything to operate with the bare minimum while raising the fees

it seems we both are ready for vacation

I could use a vacation

#

i jumped ship last year from that job though fortuantely enough

#

the sheer amount of firewalls with forwarding rules that allowed all traffic in to their DC....

midnight adder
#

well thats the "easy" way to just "make it all work" 😄

void mortar
#

sooo many RDP rules too....

#

especially with their IPS configured for "monitoring" mode...

midnight adder
#

sounds like a small shop with no dedicated security team? I have had to deal with some vendors that do things or say things that make my left arm start going numb... every year I have to perform DD/RA for Equifax... they are idiots

clear ferry
#

Did someone say cloud bullshit?

#

My cloud radar pinged

void mortar
#

cloud to butt

midnight adder
#

another vendor had such bad code you could look at other people's records by changing the GET id param in the URL (is it 1995 again?) we bailed on that contract

void mortar
#

that just means you can form your own sql queries for your own custom reports!

midnight adder
#

cloud = bad idea. but how do you get the execs to understand that? you don't because they buy into all the marketing and sales hype.

void mortar
#

lmfao and so many of these companies are changing their firewall names from "NG" to "Cloudgen" bullshit

#

lmfao

you don't like that black box?

midnight adder
#

total kludge of routes and ACLs that may or may not work with your virtual firewalls and load balancers... its like all held together with bent nails and tape

void mortar
#

virtual firewalls are a joke too

#

even firewall companies don't know how to setup their firewalls in the cloud properly

midnight adder
#

big time! had to buy 6 HA pairs for one cloud instance just to get east-west, inbound, and outbound

void mortar
#

its all a "try random shit till it works, hope theres no gaping holes"

#

azure changed their things again? gonna have to rework the install scripts again...

midnight adder
#

i was starting to calm down and now smoeone got me all riled out about cloud lol

#

I don't log into the azure portal... it changes every time

Your dmz is not hosted by opnsense?

You have two wan addresses?

dusky plank

created the interface on proxmox, cannot specify a gateway

can access my lan services from the proxy fine with port forward rules from the new zone,
just can't get out to the internet

#

opnsense of course has all 3 interfaces connected

clear ferry

Does the proxy have a default gateway? And if you ping 8.8.8.8 from the proxy and go to firewall logs and insert it's ip as source in the filter rules, does it show anything blocked?

dusky plank

But does the webserver have a default gateway?

route

dusky plank

nothing in that table

oh

it just took a second

Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
default 10.0.5.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 ens18

#

so it does have opnsense as gw

clear ferry
#

Can it ping opnsense?

dusky plank
#

nope, icmp is filtered i guess

#

port forward to lan works fine however

#

can curl 10.0.5.1:80 and it gets the response from lan

clear ferry
#

And if you just for lulz add a top rule on the firewall of the DMZ interface with allow * * * * does it work then?

dusky plank
#

yus

#

that was it?

seems kinda brute force to me 😄
