If this goes out I'll probably just hook an esp to a relay and use that instead. That'd be like <$4. I had an RPi hit a transistor that triggered a relay to open my garage at an old apartment and it worked fine for a few years until I moved out.

#

Any retail wifi adapter is going to want to use some stupid proprietary app to connect and I didn't see any Zigbee garage door controllers when I looked.

#

And I don't have any z-wave stuff.

gas prices are insane. the guy who rents the farm from me often fills one of those tanks on the back of his truck for his tractors. said when the pump kicked off he thought the tank was full, wasn't till he went inside and they told him the pump auto kicks off at $1000 he realized he still had more gas to pump lol

#

we don't get coast line type prices for gas here either. so while everyone else is paying like 6+ we're still at just below 5

orchid rose
#

The I'm Mad video is about his inability to integrate smart switches to Home Assistant since the company's customer service doesn't care and the products work like complete crap out-of-the-box. Facing online criticism from a popular YouTuber they suddenly changed gears though

#

the out-of-the box experience turned the lights back on when you walked away from the switch after turning them off 😂

cunning onyx
#

haha, what junk.

fathom sequoia
#

I think the end result was that it turned out there was a bug with adding them to the Z-wave network where switches would use the same ID and bug out because of it, so eventually they managed to get the motion sensing stuff to work by fixing that, but still had problems of there being no way to not have it fade in/out when turning it on and off, which doesn't work on non-dimmable bulbs and defeats half the point of the manual mode

orchid rose
#

I think bringing some of this content to masses is great for a push towards a more open-source or standardized approach. Linus and his crew seem like decent guys too, even if the show is more of a entertainment show for consumer level peeps. They clearly value a lot of the same things that HA was built upon

#

HA reached estimated half a million installations according to the blog post from 7 months ago. That LTT video has 1.6 million views - publicity is good

#

The problem here is that a lot of is is still negative publicity for the home automation industry, but from what I've seen they haven't blamed it on HA - yet 😄

well the future is either going to remain how things are now or tip towards the way tesla does it. that much you can be certian

clear ferry
#

It's a shame tesla is so shite cars

#

because the idea is good

#

good thing we aren't on drrzzzzz server

#

or the bot would now have warned me

#

for saying SHITE

forest edge
#

tesla is not shit. dunno why you keep saying that

#

hell most modren ev vehicles are straight up rips of thier designs lol

#

including that clunker you just bought

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

I know 25 + people who own tesla, and have had them for years, the number of recalls and replacements

#

jesus christ

#

one guy replaced the engine on his S three times

forest edge
umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

And tesla just goes sssh don't tell anyone, we will fix it for free

umbral cliff
#

That’s not good

clear ferry
#

Best way to try a lot of different cars is to buy a tesla, you'll have atleast 5 rentals per year

forest edge
#

for every issue you hear there are many more who don't have said issues.. sounds like every car company ever

umbral cliff
#

The only good thing from Tesla is the promotion of electric cars generally

clear ferry
#

And the ride comfort is utter shite, but what do I know, I've only driven two and been a passenger in 4

forest edge
#

you are also judging a car company who decided to take things to the extreme vs just doing what has been done since the 70's

#

don't get me wrong, not a tesla fan boi but you gotta give credit where credit is due

clear ferry
#

The build quality has improved drasticly since moving production to china though

umbral cliff
#

The extreme being charge a lot of money for substandard product?

forest edge
#

substandard?

umbral cliff
#

And promote vendor lock in

forest edge
#

you mean like the fastest production car ever made?

forest edge
umbral cliff
#

Which is irrelevant given you never need that in every day driving

clear ferry
#

There was a news article in the paper yesterday about a tesla owner who has now waited 6 months to get his tesla fixed due to being bumped into by another car KEK

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

they make adapters

#

there is like what? 3-4 major rechargers all with thier own proprietary connectors

clear ferry
#

Don't get me started on being a shitty CEO demanding office workers spend 40h in the office every week KEK

forest edge
#

i don't see the diff

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

There are multiple standard plugs

forest edge
clear ferry
#

CHADEMO, CCS2, TYPE2, Tesla

umbral cliff
#

Pretty sure here everything uses just one really (and Tesla)

umbral cliff
forest edge
clear ferry
#

My leaf has both chademo and type2

#

the volvo only has type2

umbral cliff
#

I haven’t looked into electric cars due to the inability for me to actually use one

#

And there being no electric cars that I would really want yet

glacial knot
#

yea, Type2 is essentially the standard outside experiments

forest edge
#

greed is standardized. it universally screws us all

glacial knot
#

well, and toys

#

the part where it's a bit more strictly Tesla and rest of the world is charging infra. Though from what I've seen (at least in Europe) Tesla is trying to join rest of the world, as it's starting to be better than Tesla's system

umbral cliff
# forest edge god forbid people be expected to work lol

Still don’t get why you’re so against office workers working at home instead of in an office. There’s 0 need to be in an office for most of those jobs. Just enabling wfh isn’t going to make everyone else move to wfh jobs (especially your ideas of garbage collectors suddenly working from home)

umbral cliff
forest edge
umbral cliff
forest edge
#

the working from home movement is already shining it's negtive effects

glacial knot
umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

Type2 is only 22kw max though @glacial knot

forest edge
#

yea from the people who do it

clear ferry
#

So it is "universal" for home \ random use

#

but not fast chargers

umbral cliff
forest edge
umbral cliff
#

What do you even mean by that

#

Define what you’re actually using as your argument

glacial knot
umbral cliff
#

As it sounds like a “I had to be in an office, so everyone should be”

clear ferry
#

WFH has only been fought in the US afaik, all my EU collegues and managers approve of it broadly, but in my company even the US managers \ CEOs approve of it, but I've only heard it being shut down 100% in the US, on both private and federal companies

forest edge
#

well take now for example. gas prices through the roof. people who work from home already had jobs that start out higher pay than those that can't be work from home. and they are not adjusting those wages for those who still have to drive to work etc

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

WFH also leads to less congestion, which is good for all involved parties, especially those who have to drive to work

umbral cliff
glacial knot
#

I've seen some amusing ideas of WFH mandate to conserve on oil in Europe

umbral cliff
forest edge
umbral cliff
#

Also haven’t you said public transport is good in the USA anyway?

#

So people don’t have to drive

#

Take the bus/ train/ tram

glacial knot
#

companies don't generally like full remote here. But I've seen none that go full back to office
