Just to butt in - I tried using an SSD in a USB caddy (PITA doing it, didn't work in the end, total waste of time) but you can get specialist SDs that are a little more expensive but far more reliable and resilient, which is what I opted for in the end. Fortunately preferences are usually exhausted by the the time you get down that far. Also even if you know a candidate has a snowball's chance in hell of getting elected but you really like their policies you should still put them first. Your preferences flow on to your next choices once they are eliminated, but they get funding next election based on how many primary votes they got.
