Only one step away from a new HA integration.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QS4fzElm8zk

I created a Game Boy cartridge with built-in WiFi. At the moment, there are only two demonstrations, a simple serial communication and getting articles from Wikipedia. However, getting to this point was not as easy as it might seem...

no shortage of work, gotta pay

so in order to use unify products such as cameras etc you have to have a unify protect system of some kind?

karmic rampart

yes

you could use something else and just use rtsp but then why buy unifi

right now I would not recommend unifi cameras

karmic rampart

Devices will lose controller support in a controller version that is released AFTER the EOL date, and it will be clearly announced in release notes. In other words, it should be clear to the user before the upgrade happens, that the upgrade will terminate support.

F that

#

still an interesting video

ashen kayak
#

Solar isn't ready for prime time IMO.

strange crag
strange crag
#

Solar is only 20% efficient. Not that good. Battery tech is probably more efficient. So guess solar needs to up their game. There is however some "solar" panels that convert IR to energy - which means they work day and night and may not need the battery.

#

As for batteries - the one I am waiting to see more info on is the battery that is nothing more than a rainwater tank that has some sort of gel in it. You want more storage - put more gel in it from a gel tanker! Its supposed to be very energy dense, but I would like to see some figures cos it sounds really kewl!

glacial knot
#

they'll still peak during the day. So you'll have to adjust some habits/schedules to survive on the IR at night

strange crag
#

so youi would still need a battery - but not as big a battery as with standard solar

forest edge
strange crag
#

yes - its a service but pretty cheap

glacial knot
#

The nice thing about solar efficiency: it only matters for W/area calculations
They are mostly thought of in peak W that they can produce. Since nothing goes in, the efficiency isn't a parameter of running them at any point in time.

Higher efficiency solar will lead to higher Peak watt setups on same area, but not necessarily Watt/tCO_2 or similar as with other power generation

strange crag
#

@forest edge saw an interesting 3d printer the other day (on the web) in that the build plate was a conveyor belt - so it automates the printing of parts cos it can unload itself by moving the belt and where the belt wraps around a pulley is where the object drops into the storage bin.

forest edge
#

yea look up videos of that model being mounted to the side of a wall so that the completed pieces fall into a bin

strange crag
#

@glacial knot but the W/area is of concern as there is only so much roof space available before you have to use land. Also a factor that the guy in the video didnt mention is that the area around the solar panels is actually warmer than the surrounding area. Therefore the larger the solar farm the larger the affected area. Wondering at what size it would start to affect local weather?

glacial knot
#

yea, it is a concern and needs to be improved. But in a very different way than for non-regenerables

strange crag
#

@glacial knot wont be long till we can make some Replicators! lol

glacial knot
#

only once the printer prints itself

strange crag
#

I just tried to find that 3d printer with the belt and I cant, but it was a standard vertical gantry 3d printer with the build area replaced by a belt. All the ones I am now finding have a tilted gantry.

It's kind of funny when I watch videos of furniture makers who make like tables etc that use a whole lot of resin. They take what would otherwise be a useless section of wood and use resin to shape it out into a table. It's cool, but they charge more for that than say an all wood piece of furniture and no one mentions the fact that resin actually breaks down over time. so these people spend more money for a product that likely won't even outlast them.

Other than plasterboard?

#

Hmm let me see

#

We turn switches down to turn them on

#

Our power outlets are landscape orientation, our light switches are portrait

#

Both the same size

#

We use very small switch mechanisms

#

Typical switch mech

#

#

99% of Australian homes built in the past say 30-40 years will have power outlets of some minor variation of this style

# hushed basalt Other than plasterboard?

referring to whats different in how you hang drywall. we hang drywall both horizontal and vertical, in fact you are suppose to stagger the seams although for long runs where whole sheets can fit you can have long seams. now "using" drywall is something not every other country does, as you refer to plaster many countries use the slats and shove plaster in between and over them

#

plaster is a bitch to remove compared to drywall

strange crag
#

gyprock/plasterboard/driwall can be placed in any convenient way. No rule says it has to be one way or the other. As for powerpoints well we have all sizes - singles, doubles, quads. Some with switches above or to the side. Light switches can be wide or narrow to fit architraves around the door or on a powerpoint as an extra switch. And ........... we even have .......... esp based switches! 🤣

#

oh and we used to have the lathe and plaster method too - way back in the old days

fallow karma
#

But do you have real buildings? I mean not made of wood and sticks, but REAL one, made of bricks and concrete?

strange crag
#

lol ofc !

#

Or would you like me to say that they mount in my humpy or on the gumtree?? rofl!

strange crag
#

fallow karma
#

Maybe, and Canada maybe

#

I have seen 3d print houses with concrete also

strange crag
#

Canada would have to have a double layer - too bloody cold! lol

#

yeah - they look like a way forward - beats lumping bricks around by wheelbarrow

#

probably still want plasterboard inside tho

fallow karma
#

Board houses are warm, they're made almost of insulation, but i'd be afraid about any single water leak , it could make huge damage to house made mostly of rock wool

#

And sticks

strange crag
#

dont know where you get this idea that board (weatherboard?) houses are warm. Need more insulation in them than you do for brick.

fallow karma
#

It's pure insulation. Brick has worse (bigger) heat transfer factor than rock wool or styrofoam

strange crag
#

got that in english? or can you tell me what each colour is?

#

oh and how thick is that overall?

#

much translation later I figured it out lol

#

not very descriptive - what insulation?

#

the windoproofing is probably what we call a builders blanket, but the vapor proof is something we dont do normally.

#

wouldnt that make the house sweat if it cant breathe?

#

or do you have another method to let the moisture out without letting the cold in?

finite atlas
#

a piece of plastic surrounded by rockwool on both sides

strange crag
#

Also hope the styrofoam is tuffer than normal stuff

#

interesting - the first google result I grab for rockwool is acoustical insulation not thermal lol

fallow karma
#

Maybe i named it not exactly good

#

Mineral wool is also known as mineral fiber, mineral cotton, mineral fibre, man-made mineral fibre (MMMF), and man-made vitreous fiber (MMVF).

#

@strange crag sadly i haven't it in any other languages

#

And about thickness. It's about 15 cm of wool inside, and about 20 cm styrofoam outside.

#

More than less. It could be 25cm inside and 10 outside, but it's math. Heat transfer factor should be U ≤ 0,25 W/(m2K)

strange crag
#

looks like the highest R rating we can get in Australia is about 5, whereas you guys apparently can get R ratings in the 20+ range!

#

and that was for rockwool

fallow karma
#

It is regulated by law, can't be more than 0.3 W/(m2K)

#

I think you haven't -15 °C in Australia? Except on the top of Kościuszko mountain

#

@strange crag 😉

strange crag

correct not that cold here, but could do with it to keep the heat out tho!

#

got the non pro I will install now

#

the pro got two cameras. one front and one down to see packages so not bad doorbells

clear ferry
#

I do DIY, I have no need for two way communication, nor will I ever use fingerprint or smart locks

clever mortar
#

Some of the newer smart locks are finally effective locks. I'd still hesitate to use one that had a cloud service, but something local with an integration into HA I might consider... maybe

glacial knot
#

I want smart locks, but I'll need to spend some more time on which ones are actually good

#

though I'd probably also go for one that's in the frame, not the door. Which makes things a bit easier

clever mortar
#

One big challenge here is finding one that fits our style of door. So far I've found one product that's not released yet ablobjoy

late gate
#

@clever mortar I have yale v3, but in Norway Verisure got exclusivity so its not possible to buy zwave or zigbee dongles to them, even the slot is there

clear ferry
#

Even a fully local one probably has some kind of override or defect

#

Leaves me sceptical

late gate
#

yale is actually quite secure

clear ferry
#

If anything I might rather do a turnable safe lock

#

I love military grade safes

late gate
#

you want a military grade lock, but break a window is easy

late gate
#

lol

clear ferry
#

There we go

#

That's the stuff

dawn prawn
#

Military grade lol

#

Most misused term I’ve come across

clear ferry
dawn prawn
#

The amount of ‘military grade’ military equipment I used in my military career that shit itself when you really needed it, the term holds no weight to me

#

Locks a bit different tho. There’s no military grade locks, just government certified security equipment

late gate
#

All my outside cameras got a 120db siren and really visible flashing red and ble light

#

that would annoy anyone

clear ferry
#

We have proper military grade here you see @dawn prawn not that Barbie stuff DogeWink

clever mortar
#

Military grade == survives being used by a squaddie

glacial knot
#

military grade encryption. RSA 1024

clear ferry
#

What is this, 1024, gimme that sweet 4096

glacial knot
#

I'm making fun of military grade encryption. RSA4096 is still usable

late gate
#

Do you dare to use password 123456 on an non exposed server? :p

glacial knot
#

nah. password1 all day everyday

dawn prawn
#

As well as your European trucks that are oversized and over weight

#

The helicopters are the worst though. And we didn’t even try to integrate our own crap into them. They’re chucking them in the bin 20 years before end of life and going back to American choppers

dawn prawn
#

European submarines too, thankfully that got cancelled before the design phase had been completed

umbral cliff
dawn prawn

And a European ship that almost sunk when it was delivered thanks to its crappy compartment seals.

Ah I could go on forever on this #the-water-cooler rant

dawn prawn
dusky plank

I've read the american choppers aren't the best either when they left the war zone, lots of maintenance

umbral cliff
dusky plank
#

not to say that europeans are better...

clear ferry
#

Just leave them behind @dusky plank

dusky plank
#

they did so, yes

dawn prawn
#

Thousands upon thousands of spinny parts - what could go wrong

clever mortar
#

I have two words... Jesus nut

dusky plank
#

lots of comparisons between hummers and the toyota hilux, hummers losing all the way

dawn prawn
#

My biggest pet peeve of the European helicopters we purchased was the door slid forward in front of the door gunner. So you can’t have a gun manned whilst people are getting on or off or roping

dusky plank
#

just stop shooting people, how about that?

dawn prawn
clear ferry

I only see cunts everywhere

late gate
#

omg my recorder is getting several houndred thousands rows pr day. maybe start setting up excludes

#

problem is lots of sensors report every second

dawn prawn
dusky plank
#

just get a perfomant db, write to it all you want all day, it rotates anyway

late gate
#

I cant have it on ha as it will crash during backup

#

I tried to put it on my NAS, but it mysql could not handle it and crashed after a day

dusky plank
#

never experienced crashes because of db 😬 and i run my mysql on a rpi mounted with nfs 😛 which is far from ideal

late gate
#

strange. I experience crash at 4 am when I ran maria as addon

#

and figured out it cached 20k entries while doring backup, and thats the treshhold of ha for failing

clear ferry
#

Lol addon

late gate
#

I am not sure why synology maria doesnt work

clear ferry
#

No issues with database crashes here either

#

In three years

late gate
#

how many rows pr day?

clear ferry
#

No idea

late gate
#

any excludes in setup?

clear ferry
#

No

late gate
#

hem

#

strange

clear ferry
late gate
#

I see no performance issues on my nas so I was a bit baffled

clear ferry
#

My database was initially on a Debian VM, then on a bsd jail, then in a Debian host container, and now in truenas scale container

#

All of them mariadb

late gate
#

I dont see why synology mariadb should be any different. its a native app

clear ferry
#

Synology 🤢

late gate
#

synology works well

#

I have a pure nvme "server" too - using it to surveilance

dusky plank
#

just run mariadb on any host and mount the root from nas

late gate
#

what do you mean mount the root?

#

use the socket?

dusky plank
#
      - /NAS/mysql:/var/lib/mysql```
late gate
#

what benefit does that got over using ip?
