We did 2.5 on our blade servers in 2008

what goes is blade is usually the start of a tech not it's end

i don't think i'll see consumer infiniband anytime soon tho

i've only see more than 25gb in company that do data computing, other usealy don't need that kind of tech

I seldom see less than 10g the last 6 years outside of management

But even management is now migrating to 10g

fiery sorrel
clear ferry

Yes

fiery sorrel

my old company use to have 100mb for management

we have a customer that runs 100Mbit/s over glass to work satations

I work with space companies, they usually prefer slower and less power consumption

fiery sorrel

is that a "we are upgrading out main network from 10 to 100, lt's use the old 10 on OOB" kind of thing ?

clear ferry
fiery sorrel
#

yea ... those ...

they screamed at us because we crossed fibre optic once between confidential and standard network ... and don't YOU KNOW EM FIELD CAN JUMP FROM ONE TO THE OTHER !!!

I guess they didn't understand what fiber was...

🤦‍♂️

clear ferry

TEMPEST is pretty cool stuff

Which is why all military moved to optics in the mid 90s

And why they used LCD since the same time

glacial knot
fiery sorrel

i didn't think about crt, but yea those big photon cannon aren't very ... silent

fiery sorrel

i would so love to see this XD i know it's technically possible ... but it would make me laugh so hard XD

#

don't you worry, we went through a grounded steel tube just to be sure ...
Steel ... not plated, 0 protection what-soever .. but we didn't say anything

glacial knot

I need to check our server room
I'm not sure how much (if atll) fiber we have there

they always do estimates until they make a meter readout of actual energy expenditure

In the UK they ask you to submit meter readings, then ignore them and estimate anyway

Does anyone have a suggestion of a device similar to a RPI that would be suitable to run openvpn server on linux that is actually available at a decent price? I dont mind spending like $50 but dont want to get ripped off on shortage prices either. Normally I would buy a RPI or RPI Zero or something similar but they are all out of stock. Thanks

Run the VPN termination on the edge

Then replace it

why not try second hand market

vast lily

well i was hoping there was just a simple solution of some other device easy to buy but if not I can dig through my draws for an old pi 2 or pi 3

i guess low cost computers are the last thing they are worried about producing during a chip shortage

even a pi zero can handle openvpn

Hey all, not really HA related at all, but hoping the Linux/Python nature of HA means that someone can point me in the right direction. I lead a team of customer insights and marketing analysts. We are definitely not developers. We want to move our analysis/ETL/automations away from our current tool and towards Python. We've got some experience now playing around with Python/Pandas (via JupyterHub) and are wanting to set up a proper dev/prod environment. Our operations team has more experience in Windows (the corporate environment) than Linux, so we're going in a little blind. Where would I go to find out more about what I will need to do to move towards a production-ready environment?

Hi, is it possible to charge a powerbank with this kind of cable constallation?:
usb-a (female) --cable--> aux (male) --port--> [[aux (female) --cable--> aux (male)]] --port--> aux (female) --cable--> usb-a (male)
the [[...]] part is allready permanently installed.
In simply terms can I send voltage over aux?! Can I just connect the ground and the life line with each other? to create a usb-a to aux power cord?

@static schooner i wish. Im in texas. That wont fly here. lol

clear ferry
forest edge
#

you can still grow it there for medical use

final cedar
#

I wanted to monitor my well pressure, front gate camera/intercom. Security cameras around the property. Stuff like that.

forest edge
#

I believe

clear ferry
#

All that will be easy

#

With object detection

#

Add motion and door sensors for more fun

#

And lora for long distance stuff

final cedar
#

Well, I do have a distance problem to solve first. My gate is about 1200 ft from my home.

#

Any suggestions on getting connectivity there?

forest edge
#

wifi extender

clear ferry
#

LoRA

forest edge
#

not with cameras

clear ferry
#

No

#

At that range wireless bridge with directional antenna might be the best option, unless you can do three points of Ethernet out there

forest edge
#

many extenders can reach up to 1500ft

#

wouldn't nessearly need a directional antenna

clear ferry
#

Not necessarily, yet I would still do it

final cedar
#

I'll look around for an extender.

last cedar
#

1200ft is carrier pidgeon territory

clear ferry
#

With or without QoS ?

clever mortar
#

Ubnt and Mikrotik both do kit for that kind of thing

forest edge
#

do you have power anywhere near the gate?

last cedar
#

Reading stuff like that makes me happy I only have 1500m2

#

Don't have to worry about running cables 400 meters

clever mortar
#

LoRA is, for sensors, ideal for this kind of thing. Ain't gonna cut it for cameras though

forest edge
#

if he dosen't have power then dealing with running power or even messing with battery cameras is a waste

#

sim card trail cams would be a cheaper route

#

and can be used as a "sensor"

clever mortar
#

And if there's not currently power, but will be, running some trunking for wired networking (even if fibre) would be a good plan

clear ferry
#

Oh

#

If there is any kind of power at the gate

#

You could do a 12/24/120v Poe switch there

#

And just do fiber from main location to gate

#

Isn't really a well versed problem here since most people don't have more than 3000m2 properties, and then the house would be smack in the middle

forest edge
#

by fiber they mean cat5/6

clear ferry
#

No we don't

forest edge
#

fiber would be retarded expensive

clear ferry
#

Om3/om4/om5

#

Cables are relatively cheap

#

Transceivers can be had for next to nothing

forest edge
#

don't really call 200+ cheap

clear ferry
#

Single mode can do 10-40km easily, but om4 can do 400m

clever mortar
#

Well, if you're outside what you can reliably do with copper, optical fibre is the way to go

forest edge
#

can get a few thousand feet of cat5e for under 70 bucks

clever mortar
#

If you're not buying a tiny amount then it's hardly expensive

#

Cat5e... 🤣

clear ferry
#

Even do 10g over 400m so probably 1g over 1km

forest edge
#

it's plenty for a few cameras

clear ferry
#

Lol cat5e

#

What is this? 2004?

forest edge
#

this is lets accomplish the goal without over spending

#

lol fiber to a gate

#

wtf lol

clear ferry
#

If you want reliable

forest edge
#

sure he's gonna need that 10g speeds

#

cat is reliable

clear ferry
#

Cat5e isn't reliable for 1200 feet

forest edge
#

bullshit

#

I have it in my house with runs over that

#

well not 5e, just cat5

clear ferry
#

scenic radish

Nope

scenic radish

1000 ft CCA 🤢 is 65-80USD on 'zon

forest edge
#

your amazon skills suck

#

he only need 200 more ft which is dirt cheap

scenic radish
#

"a few thousand"

#

TIL 1000 is a few thousand

forest edge
#

sue me.. 2k would be 100

#

point is, alot cheaper than fiber

scenic radish
#

So...a few thousand feet of cat5e is not under 70 USD then sunglossus

clear ferry
#

I've done cat5e for 150 meters, at 10Mbit reliable

forest edge
#

use to be

clear ferry
#

You want 1200 feet

#

Have fun

forest edge
#

not my fault prices went up

scenic radish
#

🤣

#

🇰

scenic radish
#

I wish it was that cheap because I want to buy another 500 ft but there's no way I'm doing that with current prices

clear ferry
#

Specs of cat5e say 100m which is reasonable, you can push it though

#

But 365m

#

Yeah

#

No

forest edge
#

pretty sure you can still pick it up for cheaper maybe just not through amazon

forest edge
clear ferry

Yes

You won't get 10

300 feet or meters

I don't use north korean measurements

scenic radish

300 ft is a lot shorter than 1200 ft

and?

scenic radish

300ft is within spec; 1200 is not

5e can handle it

i felt summoned

we run cat6 in our schools and it drops from gig, to 100 after like 320ft

we just ran a 360ft to a hudl camera

we havent had to run fiber yet but im not looking forward to breaking the strands when we accidently pull just a little too hard

ive never had to pull fiber actually

the hudl camera was, from an IDF, through library drop ceiling, through a conduit over the locker room, all the way up the wall across top of gym

forest edge
clear ferry

Pulling fiber is fun @jade tartan I did with a vacuum and a sock back in 2005

jade tartan
#

we have this FUCKING HUGE bottle of "pull lube"

clear ferry
jade tartan
#

i told my boss i prefer the "push lube"

#

lolol

clear ferry
#

Thankfully most stuff I do these days are mostly 10-30 racks over

#

Lots of rolling out cable

jade tartan
#

so like, we have these 6 lines right now, run from a basement MDF through the basement of the school like easily 300 ft

#

these lines are deff gona be down to 100

#

also the ammount of school under the schools is fucking insane

#

like 30ft ceilings in a basement

clear ferry
#

I did 150m in 2004/5, it was barely stable at 10Mbit

#

492ft

clear ferry

I'm glad I got out of schools

#

So damn underfunded

#

That said, in 2007 when I quit, most schools had one desktop and one laptop per pupil

#

And they got pads pretty quickly after they became readily available

jade tartan
#

oh, seeeeeee

#

i think our district is overfunded

#

there is 5 high schools iirc?

#

and like

#

many more other ones

clear ferry
#

We were 55 primary and secondary schools

jade tartan
#

and like we work out of the warehouse for our desks

#

and the shit i see them buying

#

makerbots, laptops and ipads out the fucking ass

clear ferry
#

Plus we did work for kindergartens too

jade tartan
#

we have so many extra AXIS cameras you could crush yourself

clear ferry

I've worked in oil for too long though, those consultants are $2000 per hour, and when four of them work on a project and storage goes down, it costs money

forest edge

was refering to the adapters.. is that the same?

clear ferry
#

I have no idea what "the adapters" is

jade tartan
#

i mean, doesnt cat7a exsist?

#

and doesnt it have individually shielded pairs?

#

cause i bet that would go a bit farther

clear ferry
#

Like most twisted pairs, 100m is great

#

The rest is best effort

jade tartan
#

true enough, you know why? because fuck trying to run wires from 1 mdf in a basement of a school

#

fucking 800ft pulls or some stupid shit

clear ferry
#

Because voltage drop

#

And interference

jade tartan
#

yeah they just built out the schools so theres a closet basicly within 300 ft of anywhere

#

all decent cisco rack stuff, just in the process of switching to aruba for WAP

forest edge
#

coax adapters are a little pricey but one thing stated like 2k meters which dosen't sound right

back to wifi being the cheapest route

jade tartan
#

depends on the coax

clear ferry

Aruba bitches

#

That's some gourmet shit

jade tartan

rg11 can go like 1000 ft if you really want it too depending on the amps on each end

jade tartan

i think hp owns them

I'm biased, I'm the only network consultant for HPE in country

jade tartan

oh word?

so you know about the aruba and airwave and sich?

HP != HPE

#

Yes

forest edge

at 80 bucks for a single adpater i would hope it could reach some range

nice! i havent gotten admin rights on that yet

im still under a month in

I watched a video where a dude was talking about those super expensive testers and comparing them to the 30 buck shit you can get at the hardware store

#

in the end he called them overpriced shit

jade tartan
#

you can get an ethernet tester for $30 at the hardware store?

forest edge
#

yea I have one, was like 20 bucks I think when i got it

jade tartan
#

does it tell you which vlan and switch port?

forest edge
#

lol no

#

mines a multi thingie

#

I used it for coax more than ethernet

jade tartan
#

i mean just a cable tester or mapper is cheap

#

i have those myself

#

but this thing is like the end all be all of ethernet testers

forest edge
#

i am sure, it's got a screen

#

you can't get that in a hardware store.. although they do have an app ran one that will do some of that more advanced shit

jade tartan
#

so im waiting for them to say we get to go to a local store, will be xmas

lol

#

as tech's we will get a bunch more tools after the 90 days

people spend wayyyy to much on fucking housing

i wana buy like 40 acres for like 60k

well not 10 years.. closer to 20 years

static schooner

Would be a good down payment

jade tartan

and i want taxes to be less then 2500 a year

not sure what the rate per acre is here now but was like 2700 several years ago

i take that back, the school system here did get a nice plot for the going rate

jade tartan

cause let me tell you good sir, there is a plot near me for like 50k for 30 acres, and i can find a used modular for less then 20k, and power would be like less then 20k

forest edge
#

what would you do with 30 acres?

#

I have over 200 and all I can think of to do with it is to rent out for cattle lol

maybe soybeans or something

you look at something and it costs one thing. close the page and come back 10 minutes later and the price has raised caused you looked at it 10 min ago

Use it for price tracking. It can also send you notifications when the product has a price cut

jade tartan

i regret not getting a monitor during black friday

it went from 350 to 499

#

sad

forest edge
#

amazon itself can send you notifications of price changes on items

#

150 price diffrence sounds like a diffrent model swap not a price increase

#

was looking at the predator's cause they had one on sale for around 300 or something and it turned out to be a model down which was only listed on thier website and was missing some of the key features I even wanted

forest edge

yea I was looking between the acer predator and nitro but after looking up the exact model number on thier site I realized it was the gutted version of the xb I had previously looked at

yea I saw that, kind of luck of the draw

#

although if I could get paid x amount then move someplace where cost of living is much lower.. I would probably do it too lol

orchid rose
#

It's interesting that it took a pandemic to notify people and companies of the existence of the Internet outside of Facebook and Twitter

#

You can order stuff online these days? Even food? And work from home too? Surprised Pikachu

forest edge
#

well it's hurting the more common labor type jobs

#

someone who would normally apply for like a retail or fast food etc etc ends up taking a work at home job

orchid rose
#

Well of course, but what I don't get why it took so long for people to take these alternatives seriously

forest edge
#

I don't think buisness really offered it as an option

#

I mean sure some where and have

orchid rose
#

By people I mean businesses also

forest edge
#

but there was a lot that still required people to go into an office

#

but those are being work from home option now

jade tartan
orchid rose
#

None of this stuff is new. Most of it was available 20 years ago

forest edge
#

stuff like the crypto boom and the stock market thing also played it's role

#

people getting insta rich left and right

#

although thats very low %

jade tartan
#

for every person getting rich, there are 10 getting poor

#

crypto is kinda BS because you cant keep your value unless you have electricity

orchid rose
#

more likely a 100 getting a bit poorer

jade tartan
#

and the stock market is the riches way of stealing from the working class so meh

orchid rose
#

Stock market is quite useful. Taxation can be an issue, but that's way too political to dive into

jade tartan
#

oh word? where do you think the stock price going up comes from?

#

the efforts of the workers

orchid rose
#

Stock speculation isn't particularly useful but the market itself is. It allows regular people to invest in companies that they otherwise might not know about And with clear rules in place, it allows them to compare those businesses

jade tartan
#

yeah no

#

they should invest in themselves

#

not a company who's just using that as an excuse to not give every workers full health care and benefits and sich

#

the workers create value, the value makes the stock prices go up, the rich whom own the most stock sell it off and take the value for themselves

#

to be clear, im saying dont own stock, go buy some gold, go start a small business, so many things you can do for yourself

#

fuck buy land as much as i hate saying that

#

because i wana find some cheap someday

orchid rose
#

That investment allows the company the funding to grow and it's not by any means risk free. Corporate ethics are an issue as is the income/wealth disparity, but that's not really an underlying issue of the stock market imo

jade tartan
#

no i dont really think that the stock market is anything like a root cause of poverty or anything like that, i just truely hate corporate america and it's constant fucking of everyone at any cost with no care for the consequences

#

and the stock market is firmly the 1%'s play thing imo, can it be a tool that helps others, sure, a friend made a bunch off just common sense trades, but i still fucking hate it and want it to fail

#

which everyone says means i want america to fail

orchid rose
#

My point is that it's not an inherent problem of the stock market but rather the lackluster oversight. Not everyone plays by the same rules. It can be fixed without dismantling the whole thing and it has its roots in some actually solid foundations

jade tartan
#

i mean sure, like i said it's not like the stock market is the issue, it's the people behind it that have ingrained themselves in every loop hole grey area they can to fuck over everyone else

#

but i do not think you could do anything about it, wasnt always rotten, but sometimes you just gotta plant a new tree

terminal windows sounds like a boomer disease
