atx buys something, rips it open and invest more moneyb replacing something inside
wait tediore does that too
Sounds like home lab stuff
f all that
You’ve never wanted to take something apart to tinker?
only when it's needed not just for the lulz
I'm currently rebuilding a power supply for a dx7 ii
Just busy with a 17 day old baby who needs some TLC
you are rebuilding a wall wart?
it not a barrel jack?
it's a brick?
No, it's a power supply
my grandfather had one of those huge synthesizer keyboards and he just ran it off one of these
no it was huge
Keyboard
🤣
I don't remember what it was, just know he was into music and he got it to replace his piano

Got to go for new years eve party, but as a driver 😫

Part of the street survey that immediately became a meme, the survey took place in Poland in 2011.
most stuff that clings or sticks to a window suffer the same expansion and contraction through the year. smart tint may not flex as much as your typical tint but I highly doubt it doesn't flex at all and when it does if it's right up against the frame it will cause it to pop loose either just the corner or even the whole thing.
thats why when you tint your windows there is a gap there
to prevent that
if your window frames are wood, those also expand and contract
Somebody paid money for this XD
@clear ferry finally you can make ikea quality furniture at home! https://youtu.be/iJEq-vBG1Ws

You know when they say adult xmas is basicaly new years ?
I need a xmas present ... and i won't be able to wait 300+ day XD
10TO drive ... sooo expensive :(
i've heard rumor about hdd from X being bad and Y better... this is the second one in 3 months ... i'm starting to forge an opinion on that brand
Well, depends what you need, you don't want smr for zfs
free/truenas... zfs, so i took none smr drive
But i know you a tinny bit, enough to know that what ever brand i would say, you will reply with 🤮 XD
why do they make nas drives 6800rpm when they use to be 6400?
faster more better i guess ?
no slower is better when it comes to that
i mean i would love a 15k 10to drive
to what ? lifetime ?
yes
The most reasonable is to buy wd external drives and shuck them
i don't know how much it change the lifetime honestly...
They are 5400 sometimes
And 7200 sometimes
They vary depending on temperature and power
never seen specs of labeled nas drives ranging like that
Hello
it's not on the label here, i'm looking at some old ebay listing to check what speed it was
7200 RPM
they are field with some gas, that may get them higher speed easier, so they go for it
Helium is pretty normal
for consumer?
Yes
yes, it's now in almost everything above 5 to i think
I didn't know that. does it list it on the drive?
I thought it was really only for those big drives
Some do, but it is so normal most don't mention it
Even smart has a value for helium level
wait wut Oo
🎈
I thought you had hdd's too
I do, but not from work
mine don't have helium value :(
I brought home 21 ssds last year
damn ... full flash nas ?
umm that uptime is over 3 years
don't you know they shoot for it to fail right after warrenty
which is it?
🤫
Should be smart value 22 @fiery sorrel
i'll see if cli give me more
drive should run cooler as well i would think
so even looking at temp could indicate
na, nothing more ... well not important, but sad :D
I always ran ironwolf just because I always seem to want a new drive when they go on sale
its always freaky timing
the drive have been running badblock for 200H to check how bad the damage was, in a 30°C room without fan ...
but that's not his usual condition
mine run around the same temps and they aren't overworked
maybe a bad batch, maybe a bad case, maybe having 12 of them in a 2U is to much shared vibration
maybe i need to store less data ....
NAAAAA !
alright time to go try and pair some more linkind zigbee sensors
Shucking @fiery sorrel
yeaaaa .... but so many of those are now soldered ... and they are usealy blue drive with poor speed ...
i just don't want to deal with another hassle project ...
i paid 300€ for a new drive, it will run a couple day of badblock and the an extended smart test. after that, on the spare pille until the next one fail
really ? they are more and more external drive without sata connection, the external board is included to the PCB of the drive
nothing to get out
Never seen or heard of, I shucked 4 drives last year
And I'm in a data hoarding discord
They have never mentioned it
who's soldering the boards so i can avoid them
WD for exemple
Which models?
i'm looking it up
so, apparently all 2.5 usb for WD, but those aren't the 3.5 i'm intrested in
Any Canadians interested in a raZberry zwave. PM me

Sorry

good talk
Any Canadians interested in a raZberry zwave. PM me

not nice to talk about your wife that way. and sorry to hear it
happy new year @everyone
yep
tbf.........yes..
lol
xD
Why would you ping poor @clear ferry??
Why not?
Who's @clear ferry
lol ok I mean it's not wrong just not very informative
how to gain 12 months of uptime for as little as 30 secs of power on time. Easy to get that 99.9999% uptime SLA. lol
just tell the customer, its a fault on their side
@forest edge is it 22 yet ?
no your only two hours behind me
are you even going to be sober to know what time it is when it gets closer to midnight?
No idea, started drikinf at 8AM 🤣
lol addict
Noon, it's opportunity driven
you slackarses - the first day of the new year is half over! 🤣
BBQ in 44 WX is not as fun 🤔
lol bbq on new years.. wtf is wrong with you people
Was supposed to fly out to SF in the AM. Rover let me down, getting a dog sitter. So it's just 2 of us tonight.
Pretty standard here
why don't you just get one of those backpacks with the space bubble and stuff your dogs in there and take them with you?
yea well in au I would imagine lizards over a spit is the norm lol
150lb dog won't fit in those. Lol
sure it will, just gotta push hard enough
a riff on the typical college physics problem - imagine a spherical dog
Cabernet, single malt, tequila and champagne don't go well together 😕
running on 2 hours of sleep in the past 48 hours.. doubt my ass will be awake for new years lol
2 hours on the tarmac last night. Rain and LA does not go well together lol
Predicting sonoma will bash cali in some form after that
That's how Midwest 1 up on gloomy days.
So you want us to feel sorry for you ?
Omg, well I haven't talked about raccoons since last year. Oh wait, fixed it

Don’t think @clear ferry has 🤢 reacted this year yet
Anyone got an automation against sleepiness. its 14:33 and want to sleep
xD
beer beer and more beer
I dont drink 😦
lol you actually got it
I have mastered sleeping over 35 years of sleep disorders
I can sleep anywhere, anytime, under any circumstances
same
If I nap 30 minutes here and there I'm fine
for maybe an hour or two only tho, right?
I can nap multiple times a day, but I usually only need a power nap somehow
From a guy who used to work 60+h weeks and now is a father of two

I cant sleep so I take loads of stillnoct, valium and oxy every night making me sleepy the whole next day
i watch netflix while going to bed, now i sleep like a baby unlike years ago where i needed hours after hours
I did stilnoct for a year
Did nothing for me
Also did melatonin, no use in that either
lol naps, only old people nap you geezer
@tidal bronze so did you pass out on the lawn and wake up with a speaker in your ass and no recollection as to what happend?
Come back to me when you aren't retired and have kids old man
ok geezer
anyone with synology that have experience why dns manual dns isnt working when ipv6 is enabled?
if only I cooked.. maybe quad had something to do with that and it was probably tediore who started it by asking the question
Sounds like more hazzle with ipv6 then. Dunno even if its a benefit :p
but my whole dns setup collapsed. Probably a small issue
I have a local dns server where I route local dns services
I've never had issues resolving ipv4 local DNS while also using routable ipv6
I probably will figure it out
This is the thing I dont like with UDM. It lacks basic things like manual dns.
What a half assed useless product
Any routing/ firewall software I've run since 2000 has supported manual DNS entries
its just the ui that lacks
I got everything I need from the synology, but I guess its just a routing issue. I would expect it to lookup ipv4 first through normal routes
Not really
Complicated? Imma have to disagree with you there
it's not when you were born into it lol
I've been playing with IPv6 since 2000, but I still don't understand every bit of it, but it's fine
but you are a network guru
Basic V6 is basically v4 with longer addresses. There are some other things that you can do that aren't in v4, but you can also mostly ignore them and be fine to start with.
Oh yeah, and no NAT craziness goes a long way to making V6 considerably less complicated to deploy in earnest.
Psssh what a lie, ::1 is a lot shorter than 127.0.0.1

Hah, fair point. And I love pointing out Sprint's website's V6 address. https://[2600::]
all i know if pfsense came setup up generically for both and I had all kind of ip6 dns issues till I removed it and forced ip4
that or cloudflairs ip6 dns is trash

So...is the issue looking up V6 addresses? Or transporting DNS in V6?
I had a pfsense, but sold it. I should have used it as a router
I just had to disable ipv6 in pfSense to get my VPN client configured in the router to stop leaking my address. Most don’t support ipv6
and we're back to why I said ip6 is complicated lol
Just user issues
yea yea
🤷 the common thread I'm hearing here is pfsense
With great power comes great responsibility
Wireguard you can tell to use either IPv6 or ipv4 explicitly
If that was an issue
And just force all traffic over the tunnel
Sure, there are things that don't support V6, or don't support it well maybe, but that's not a complexity of V6, that's a vendor fail.
so why hasn't everything switched over to it? it's been out quite awhile
It was working just fine, but I wanted to route all traffic through the VPN client and sometimes ipv6 is preferred and bypassed the VPN, which was just v4 from the provider
Because there are lots of people that, when they run into the first thing that needs troubleshooting in v6, just decide to disable it instead.
👋
I saw a Google report the other day...they now have more V6 traffic to their site than they do v4, fwiw.
Cost
Mac, at least, will use it first. That was the problem I found
All isps in Norway have supported IPv6 for many years, but most only with their own network gear
Because of their poor man's ipv6 nonsense
Most gear will give at least a slight preference to V6 as vendors recognize (for the most part) that it's a technology that needs to be advanced
We have supported IPv6 on all our hardware for the last decade, I can still count on one hand the number of customers who run a full IPv6 stack internally
ipv6 ❤️
Most of the stuff I manage is dual-stack, but there have been some specific networks and systems that I've run v6-only. I tried to do it with HA until I started using esphome. :/

4-6" of snow yet all it does is sleet
Gotta get 14 feet or go home
its 7c plus here and rain
-8c here
Its an ok place
I always get good rentals there
About 10c here (Louisville, KY) and raining...rather dismal looking, actually
was like 56F here yesterday and then dropped like a steep hill lol
.f2c 16
16 degrees fahrenheit = -8.89 degrees celsius!
.f2c 56
56 degrees fahrenheit = 13.33 degrees celsius!
Sorry...it's 15c....felt a lot colder
I should get over to visit our new main office in Texas when COVID is done making the us bearable again

lol texas
Georgia was nice for two weeks
Yeah, it'd be nice to be able to leave the house without fearing the people around me
What does "IPv6 RA Priority" (Low, medium, high) means?
that isn't a covid issue tho.. that a kentucky issue lmao
I'm gonna say nothing important since I've never heard of such a setting.
That is how often it should multicast i think
Yeah, well, those kinda go hand in hand (tbf, Louisville is pretty decent in this respect, compared to most of the state)
yea it was a joke, ky is actually pretty nice
your just far enough norrth to escape the hangings

Yeah, there's a lot that's great...the politics, tho... 😬
they love people like atx in the south.. can't wait till he visits
I tend to keep to civilized areas
really? you didn't even try red robin last time.. think you failed lol

Most here still don’t support ipv6 lol
Where does Texas fall in the Whataburger vs In n Out scale?
Well you are almost as backwards as the US in Aussie land @umbral cliff
i dunno.. we have a few texans around here somewhere tho
Hey we’re better than them. Don’t put us that low
At least we use metric
I think it's Whataburger-land, but can't remember
I thought you measured everything is Barbies @umbral cliff
Not yet
Also ugh stuck in close contact isolation but no smart home stuff to play with
F is for fantasy units?
Bored as
Start gambling
Not enough money for that
he can't afford a cc remember
Don’t have an income right at this moment. Though CC doesn’t mean you’re rich. If you gamble on a CC you’re an idiot
There plenty of free gambling games
no but if you can't afford one you certianly couldn't afford the other which is the point i was making
Except you ignore the magic thing called savings
Lol savings
thats as dumb as gambling using credit tho..
Yeah. Still saying that I can afford stuff even without an income as yet
the rest of the world dosen't use whale hide as currency
I had an income. Requirement to work was being a current student at my uni
How much is per semester in Australia?
Think my wife pays usd50 per semester these days
How are savings dumb?
thats an expensive cooking class
Uni fees vary based on what subjects you do, but IT is around $2800 a semester (for 4 courses). Not cheap but at least we can get an interest free loan from the government that only is paid off when we earn above a certain amount
Ooof
Maybe start cooking at home then? Two birds with one stone
Stupid politicians benefited from free uni but then decided that we don’t need it anymore
I paid $30 20 years ago when I still bothered trying education
If you want trade based stuff then it can be free. Only uni level is definitely charged
But yeah about 20-30 years ago here it was completely free
schooling in the private sector is a complete joke
Very little private schools here
Same here
Maybe 1%
Fees are set by the gov for the unis
No matter whether it’s the top uni or worst uni you pay the same amounts
For foreign students it’s around 4+ times the amount @clear ferry, since we’re subsidised down by the gov to ~$700 per subject
my niece went to au for college. think the schooling was cheap but holy hell her mother bitched alot about what it cost for just living expenses lol
it like balanced out. sort of
I just burned a PI cause running a lot of HA addons in containers... Probably it is burned since it is not able to get into os from SD after new raspios flashed. Any recomendations on substitute like NUC? A power effitient nuc? 🙂 so it will not drain a wallet? :ú
you burned as in you kept cpu high with no cooling?
NUC, yes
#hardware-archived has a long history of suggestions, but basically buy the best second hand NUC/small PC you can afford
the rpi3b+ at my moms runs high mem usage using zigbee devices i noticed. 6 devices so far and it run just under 70% mem usage
thought that was odd
Compared to the USA yeah living expenses are high for some things. Though it’s liveable here if you are clever about where you live (eg share houses and budgeting)
I had there a passive... but i tried to instal Lidarr and during scaning of my library it totaly crashed :D.. i do not know if due to overtemperature but probably yes.
just found it funny that it seemed like it balanced out money out of pocket wise. schooling is high here but living is affordable etc
How much watts does the nuc takes more than pi? Is it different between the nucec?
you should get a diffrent sdcard and try it to make sure.. pi's are way more robost then most give it credit for
I am trying now 🙂
different nucs, use different amounts of power
Schooling at a top uni in the USA would be more than accomodation & tuition here
2x-3x the power ussage of a pi is common for a intel nuc
maybe.. I mean you also gotta take into account the credits and funds people can get that helps pay for that stuff
Still. If you want a top 30 in the world uni are you paying 30-90k a year in the USA? Or more?
That's like asking how many MPG "a car" gets...
I don't know what the cost is currently for any of that, just know the system hasn't changed and you can't even get into those schools without being able to get all the (mind went blank, whatever that crap they give students as free money)
I thin you mean km/l
Whilst here you can get in by just having good grades
but good grades qualify you for those funds or whatever
why can't i remember what those are called lol
school cost in the US is absolutely retarded but there are many ways people can negate that cost, it's just people don't want to jump through hoops to do that and i don't blame them
you can talk about hardware in here
but #hardware-archived is probably better
Grants.. that's what they are called lol
@clear ferrydo you run docker in opnsense?
How are you measuring mem usage?
what tld do you guys use on your local network, local, home or lan?
Hrmm...ok...I always try to dive into any reports people have of Linux using more memory than expected due to widespread lack of understanding of Linux memory management (ie, that the kernel will use effectively all for buffers and caching if it's not otherwise used)
.net
my homenet is a non-public subdomain of my domain. Even got "proper" certificates for it 🙂
I have a domain, I use a subdomain of that...
a public domain?
Yes
Same
let's encrypt DNS01 challenge for domain wildcard certificates makes internal tls easy with that
I'd go with self-signed PKI, but too many devices without good enrollment posibilities
isnt that risky?
why risky?
Why would it be risky?
why run https inside a local network?
would you not need to register the dns publicly then?
Why not
My domain is public... the contents of the sub-domain don't have to be (and aren't)
sounds like more work then it's worth
to make sure the laptop doesn't try to auto-connect to the wrong services when outside that specific network
true enough
@tidal bronzeso you fiannly woke up on the lawn?
no. only thing that exists publicly for it is the DNS challenge for let's encrypt. And only while certbot is doing its thing
Cloudflare wildcard is easier
so you push it public, get cert, then remove the public dns?
ti's not 100% standard compliant and devices that enter and leave the network shouldn't have dns caching, but outside that, there's no reason not to have your local resolver provide authoritive answers to queries on a subdomain
the challenge is a TXT record iirc. It doesn't expose anything
Yeah, that's how certbot works for DNS challenges
logical enough
I don't like cloudflare /shrug
why?
centralization of internet infrastructure
cloudflare and aws are always fun when one fails and 2/3rds of the internet fail with it
thats true
they provide good services, don't get me wrong
And then fastly kills the other third
Would not matter for local
but cloudflare is helping me more, than it hurts, so i'll stick to it
or akamai cdn
I just don't want to use them in general. And don't think I'd benefit in any way over my current setup.
Might have saved a couple hours tinkering until I got it, but that's about it
CF, NPM and Pi Hole simple as it gets.
npm in this context?
For local lookups
node package manager? 🙂
what if i have a dynamic ip?
Oops nginx proxy manager lol
CF
I need to take a look at that. I manually put my hostnames into the nginx config so far
Cloudflare
good old vi 🙂
I also have a simple fuse file system that allows me to template configuration files with a simple data file. I should actually add inotify handling into it, so I don't have to manually restart it on edit 😄
You can take a step further and route all dns via wireguard so local subdomains work remotely so everything works seamless no matter where you are. 😆
I mean, yeah.
But being a nerd is lucrative.
Even protects me from various stupid DNS based attacks, because it's the default upstream server^^
glad I don't get attacked
Since docker doesn't run very nice on BSD, no?
what do you use as upstream DNS server? ISP's?
I wonder if it'd be viable to write docker backend on jails. Would need BSD images though I guess
yea that's what I read but I keep seeing some posts where people have done it and so wondered if you did
kind of shame really
now that I think about it, does BSD have mount namespaces? It shoudl have chroots. How does the "syscalls only from libc" policy work with those? 🤔
I mean it does for some things
Pi Hole >> Unbound
but all of that could be ran through other means as well like plugins..
I think we have pretty similar setups 🙂
I wonder if I should have ran something like openwrt rather than pfsense
One of these days gotta spin up a second pi hole on a pi and sync them, then I am done.
wtf you trying to protect? mp3 rips of Frank Sinatra?
what?
Hwat
Mp3s? Huh
Vinyl 🧓
you can already picture quad dancing with his dogs to frank
Vinyl is great, none of that bullcrap compression on cd
it has the crackles built right in
lol
only the best FLAC
Nopes that would be DSD
I need to buy more, but vinyls are bloody expensive
if you all knew how many records I got rid of over the years you'd freak lol
I buy two or three a year
Not to Frank but to....
ALways
I might have a Led Zeppelin 45 that had a B-side that wasn't available on a regular album somewhere. But nowhere to play it, and it's probably lost to time
8 track or bust
Storage space is a problem with vinyl
I was just back at my childhood home for the holidays and my junior high yearbooks were still there, so the 45 might be there somewhere
thats what old jukeboxes were for
I even had one of those table top 45 jukeboxes that sit on the table
yearbooks o.0
they were a thing in 1985
Although Vinyl is great, DSD and ATMOS music tracks are something else. Whole new dimension
I love atmos music tracks
Does DSD do anything interesting?
If you have the right re-production equipment AKA analog amps and right speakers, yes
I just use earphones with atmos to spatial audio
When mastered properly and not a piss poor job. The world of the music track is insanely massive
Indeed
I don't see a benefit over FLAC. And it's just single audio streams, so anything interesting is from the container from what I can tell
so nothing about what the format provides, but the usual chain for the product goes through?
Yep
Thank you apple for bringing this to us with headphones/earphones. It’s unreal sitting there and not bothering your significant other
yea, that makes sense
It’s like having a nice ATMOS surround system without having one
That's a tough call.
wonder if @dull chasm is at the rose parade https://youtu.be/vmJyjcEqunU
You should hear the new airpod 3 in a no so noisy room
The reproduction of the lows is on point, it’s almost like having your body rumble but it’s not hitting your entire body
I do love my ear speakers but nothing can reproduce base like subs and bass shakers. So you are missing quite a bit no matter what headphone on the low end.
I thought that as well but you need to try the new 3s
I am a Sony fan in ear and over. But I will give it a shot.
“very low distortion” loudspeaker
Try these when you get a chance. https://staxheadphones.com/collections/earspeakers/
I like these more than my pro
Oh man, that soundstage
Yah you have better in home :p I like mine because they are sub $200
Never tried anything apple, ever but let's try these out.
They will surprise you with the price point range
ANC?
No ANC on the 3s they are designed to be open and not canceling
Got it
I would skip out on the current pros which do have ANC for the next gen
I would also skip out on the MAX series seeing how even Apple is bitching about Bluetooth bandwidth
BT is not ideal, yet, gotta deal with what we got 🙂
For flights it's wf-1000xm4 and wh-1000xm4
Waiting for spotify HiFi, tired of syncing playlists between tidal
almost everything on Apple Music is lossless now and they plan on having everything lossless
What are they using? Something similar to MQA?
Like flac they have alac
https://www.dolby.com/music/#gref just noticed apple music. 🙂 Gotta try out and see difference between tidal and that.
If you like atmos and use plex do not use apple tv. They block atmos on non subscription services
Atmos is Apple Music only
Yep.
That sucks.
The rest of the music service industry needs to catch up
Shield pro all around here. I do like the apple TV interface. Used it few times
I prefer apple UI, but shield have better support for DV profiles, TrueHD and Atmos
Shield are also able to be used for custom notifications on tv from hass
When doorbell is rang it takes a picture and pops up on tv
?
I dont know if shield can do the same
I saw no way to add any notifications to anything other than android tv from hass
you need to add it through homekit integration and then you can pop up all types of doorbell notifications
Where are you getting your 4k atmos movies? 😉
PiP even over Netflix?
Pip is system wide
Tested streaming cam feed pip over netflix?
I’m still missing something. Are you saying add the Apple TV to hass via the HomeKit connect or whatever integration and then it gives you the ability to add notifications?
i googled and understand now
great
i keep buying more shield tvs because i thought apple tv was too locked down
i guess now i know i was wrong
I found AppleTV to be harder to automate, while Shield supports lots of low-level stuff via ADB
ADB is super nice.
Like I can turn on my Shield, launch YouTubeTV and select a channel all through ADB and intents
Is it possible to get the same PIP on shield as on apple? A picture popup and can open it and see live video?
I do snapshots and works great. Not really interested in live
with AppleTV, it was all "move right, move up, select" nonsense
I need to figure out why the LG soundbar integration doesnt work with my soundbar, even if its a wifi soundbar. Its more reliable using HA than CEC
Just got my 1st ATMOS soundbar for a guest room. Pretty disappointed. Glad it's a guest room 🙂
I got the "top of the line" atmos soundbar with back speakers when it was on discount from 3000USD - it works very well compared to the surround system I had before
lol guest room
but ofc doesnt work with ha properly
gonna come squat at your place
Anytime 🙂
lol anytime.. i'll never leave and always ask where the cheetos are
walk around in my underwear scratching my ass
So nothing out of the usual then @forest edge
I am planning to run REW and see what the response and crossover is like. There's major loss in channel separation in the front 3 and sub to 80hz xfer.
Cant have guests leeching on my internet
well from what you said the other day doubt they could connect anyways
Guests 🤢
https://www.roomeqwizard.com/ surround sound done right.
REW is free software for room acoustic measurement, loudspeaker measurement and audio device measurement and analysis
@forest edge guest network with mex 56kbs
I've been playing with ExpressVPN configured through pfSense for all my traffic and GeoIP is misidentifying the location of the IP. I'm connecting through LA, but GeoIP thinks the IP is in the UK
I think that's causing AlexaAPI in HA to time out and generate errors in the logs, but it doesn't seem to affect functionality
looks like GeoIP2 gets it right, but GeoIP from the command line and Alexa get it wrong
Trying to decide if forcing all my network traffic through the VPN is more trouble than it's worth. Kinda on the fence right now
Luckily, it's supereasy to only target specific machines in pfSense if I want to limit it
I'm still leaking DNS requests because I haven't figured out how to get the pfSense DNS resolver to serve my local DNS records without falling back to the public DNS servers for other lookups
It's also possible to shunt specific linux users, and specific docker containers through a VPN, I've done both, although only use the latter now days
dns through pfsense seems flaky sometimes for some devices
not sure what the cause is but like my roku's sometimes have trouble
my pc's are fine though
geoIP service probably using the VPN IP to determine location. you'd need to make it so geoIP lookups don't route through VPN if it uses an external IP for the lookup. or it might be the reverse if you're actually in UK. odd issue though overall.
They(or the cloud provider they use) have probably also brought the IP from someone else(especially now), so the geoip DB probably has old info
ugh...I'm on vacation, don't make me think about geoip databases and geolocation 🤮
Yes, it is. But the PoP is in LA, not the UK, and GeoIP2 resolves correctly to LA
This is likely, and not much I can do about it other than play IP roulette
I’m not in the UK either, so there’s no other reason for it to think that
Currently trying to find a Pi to free up a Pi4 so that i can use it to mess arround with thread when the USB radio(nRF52840) arrives
@static schooner also failed lookup might do something like default to UK?
it seem like one of the companies express uses for servers or renting IPs is based in the UK with international PoPs, so some IP addresses will be registered to a UK org
ahh yah that makes more sense
I’m using ExpressVPN, so I suspect the same
havent they been out of stock for ages
Yep
the more i read about thread(and hear about it from somone using it) the more it looks neat
I dunno, reducing processing between client and device seems rather neat
Whats your favorite diy ‘ilo’?
anyone else think there should be a gif of atx slipping on ice and falling on his ass, you know like a meme we can just post randomly
We can fix a gif of me cutting his internet line
Matter which uses thread is neat as it can have multiple MASTERS
That’s right, HomeKit, home assistent, Samsung smart things can all co exist
Hey guys happy new year.
I got problem to get modbus to work. where I can ask help for this . ?
probably #integrations-archived
ok thank you I will ask
I'd like to have some advice regarding thermostats with non-smart central heating (CV ketel). Which channel should i use for that? #hardware-archived?
yes
Praise the Pawd
anyone have smartRF Flash Programmer v2 installation file? cant sign in TI.com right now because there is some maintenance ongoing..
Does nobody search before posting 🤔
but i thought, asking people is my search function
I like to occasionally add some snark to differentiate this site from Google
i always forget to use search.. 😄
but anyway, thanks.
Love it!!
oh btw Michelle since we talked about intelligent animals a few days ago, the all-knowing YouTube immediately decided to recommend this one. Interesting watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GimCcrwYxdE

When's 2022 release scheduled for?
.0 releases 🤢
that's why our version scheme starts with a 100 🙂
lol @ Microsoft
01111111111111111111111111111111 just dont cut it anymore
they should've done something more reasonable
like use a long datatype for the number of seconds in a date
would've bought them an extra 16 years
I haven't looked to into it, but did they have no idea? I mean even it was being developed in the 90s, they should have known that 2022 wasn't that far away.
I read on a Reddit thread that this particular change was made for version 16 of Exchange
well into the 2000s
I presume they thought people would’ve updated. Either that or the developers just never thought about 2022 and just whacked it in
You are expecting developers to actually take stuff into account
Just look at #551864459891703809

don't you mean #330944238910963714
🤢
Sounds like atx’s favourite install method

Driving my V70 for the first time in a month
And it doesn't even feel like a downgrade
It's a damn good car
You still have that old thing? :P

I'll probably replace it in 3-5 years
Get a v60 or v90
Or maybe I'll buy another A8

How old is it
2005 - young
That's no age for a car
If it were a 2006 or 2007 V70R with a stick, I would be all over it

i've seen more volvos in my 4 days in sweden, than i ever did in my whole life in germany
You don't want to know the word we use for German cars with 4 wheel drive up north then
We are very literal in northern Norway

it's right behind "is it plugged in?"
a close second indeed
I mean i spent a decent amount of tine troubleshooting the compose config. Between having env variables not doing what they're supposed to and having to remap ports, i finally got it working.
Turns out (and im pretty sure) that pihole went anal on me and wouldnt accept NAT'ed resolve quaries. I mean i get why thats good practice, but you'd expect some sort of "allow all" whitelist.
Hello all, I am thinking of getting a router to sit on top of my ISP modem/router. Do you have any suggestions, I was looking at Nest wifi and TP link Archer AX6000 and netgear nighthawk R8000P
I had both at once. No internet after I moved. Forgot to connect the ethernet to the pihole interface. So it was simultaniously both dns and not plugged in.
Y'all and your piholes
2 routers is pain
Just fix it in opnsense
Pihole ❤️
I moved to adguard now on opnsense, it is great
What are the pros?
No seperate vm or anything, but same nice fancy gui and easy to use

Can make it grab updates from the repo daily too, I don't touch it
what do you mean seperate vm?
Piholes just a package. Install anywere
thanks michelle, so opsense is better than the others wrt to home automation?
someone say pi
Go back to bed. This is adult business
I had an opnsense vm. And a seperate pihole vm, I wasn't using packages @crisp sapphire
ah. I meant global pros with the software itself.
is it more robust? Customizable? Faster?
Same, for me
I set it up once and forget
When I update opn, it also gets updated
No different in terms of speed or reliability that I have noticed
But I wasn't using pihole on a pi, it was on a 3rd gen i5 before, so ymmv
Might be a huge difference coming from a pi
Its pretty autopilot for me as well. All i need to do is update the container ever now and then. And thats a choice.
Won't make a lot of difference for home automation to be honest. I much prefer opn over a "onebox router, firewall, aap etc"
You can rarely place it so the wifi is good enough
Sounds kinky

Box with green lights is my router
Don't hate on the Supermicro shit @clear ferry

I like how the sys monitor last boot sensor just says, Last year
wonder if next year it will say, The year before last
?
That is glue btw, not anything else
What is up with it
looks like the floor of a japanese bukkake establishment
Pihole 🤢
This is the strangest thing. It doesnt even appear like its pihole
Pihole forwards the request to unbound & gets a response.

dont tell me its my router or il jump out the window
First I manually entered dns address as pihole
Then to improve it (in preperation for switching over to adguard) I pointed opnsense at pihole
And pointed all clients at opn on dns server
you can stop now. Not switching.
No, I am not saying you should
If you are sending dns requests to your router, it needs to send them to pihole
Where is your setup failing?
No blocking, or no internet?
no im not sending them to the router. This is whats going on:
For some reason, NAT devices arent able to resolve dns requests through pihole. So basically, none of my containers can resolve dns. Iv spent the entire day narrowing down the issue to be pihole or something related (e.g unbound).
When i explicity tell an example container to use 1.1.1.1, it works like a charm. As soon as i point it to pihole all hell breaks loose.
pihole forwards the request as per the logs and gets a response from unbound. Latency of response suggests unbound's working just fine and actually resolving.
so afaik, the only possible middle man here would be the router fucking something up.
When i say NAT i mean nested NAT. All devices with direct local addrs can use pihole.
but docker uses internal NAT. Iv also tried using the host as network for the containers and that works, which adds even more credibility to my theory
exactly. So my phone at 192.168.0.40 works, but the docker container at 172.20.0.10 doesnt.
and again, as soon as i make the container use a local addr (docker host), it starts working.
check your iptables
did, nothing suspect. The containers work fine when pointed to 1.1.1.1 even on the docker internal network
just not when pointing to my local range
Its a head banger. I wanna throw my laptop.
I don't understand well enough how it does its own nat, sorry
But I think mstone is on the right track
Afaik iv had this issue forever. I remember not being able to reach local addrs and having strange behaviour. I generally ignored it as the strange stuff didnt get in the way.
Its only when i started messing with nats and docker that the issue became aparent
Its fine i didnt expect any help. Just venting my immense frustration
Time to check router.
I invented new swear words trying to get docker to work. As @clear ferry can attest
And I still can't get it working haha
Lol
Have the nat devices ever worked with a local ip as dns server?
Obviously 1111 is external
its a pain in the ass but man is it great. Iv created and nuked maybe 50 containers today trying to fix this. Not a single dependency installed, not a single change made to the host OS.
its an OCD killer. Lets me get real dirty knowing i can just prune it all away.
I need to build my new 1 box, but I suck too much
Never tried. Docker uses the host's dns config and the host points to 1.1.1.1. Never had to point to local addr.
But I need to build nas part soon
This could be your issue
well yea thats what iv been saying?
?
The issue isn't pihole, it is the way it is routed, with the nat
Wait, that is what you have been saying
Ignore me
Oh. No i dont belive it is. Maybe i missunderstood the .. oh ok.
its fine lol. Were all trying here
I just realied I am probaby not helping lol
so i belive its the response thats the issue
i dont mind at all. Shitpost all you want i like that sorta stuff
I wish I could help more
ik il get shit for this, but here goes:
I run wireguard in docker. Why is this a good/bad idea?
note: image im using integrates the kernel driver. So no its pretty efficient
pro/cons depend on your network mode in use
internal
thinking of switching to host
just makes sense, instead of running a dual nested NAT
internal meaning bridged?
yea. Sorry brain fart.
why would you do that?
well i just set it up like an hour ago.
still under experimentation.
so i should go host mode you reccon? I mean that makes the most sense to me.
yes
Only downside is that i cant map the port to a custom external one. Im using wg-easy, not the official image.
could get my hands dirty and do it. But dont feel like redoing the work every time i wanna update
you sure can with a config file or env vars
actually no. Wg-easy only lets you change the web ui port not the wg port.
or so i think.
Doesnt appear like you can run wg-easy in host mode :/. Whats the worst that could come from running wg in bridge mode @dusky plank ?
We need that for HA
Hello, where can I post an error message about aiohttp.server ?
There's no support for Home Assistant here - please look at the other channels for that. If you can't work out which is relevant, start in #general-archived.
If it's a question about the HA Amber see #yellow-archived, and #330990055533576204 for the Blue. Install related problems go to your Installation Method channel.

Or one for networking with every side of the die saying DNS
did you know whats the name of Volvo diagnostic hardware?
Volvo Vida Dice
But then all the dice will just say haos and conbee
I have a copy of 2014d
Dog damnit Murica
I gotta recertify my W-8BEN apparently
Whatever nonsense that is
Can anybody direct me to help with AppDaemon and old iPad display problems?
AppDaemon is a loosely coupled, multithreaded, sandboxed python execution environment for writing automation apps. It uses the Home Assistant API (or MQTT) to communicate with HA. You can get help at their Discord server.
Try their Discord

Thanks! I searched but it didnt find them, that link works! Bless you!
🙏
cold weather can kiss my ass
agreed
Twice
Its rigged?
Explains everything.
It has a reality bias
we had one recently where is wasn't dns !
it was the on-site technicien tripping on a cable and not plunging it back in :(
(also the juniper ivpn ring is a bitch ...)
where you take multiple core router and connect them in a ring way ...
I don't know what erps is
good thing is that you can loose a cable and everything work, you can also loose a core and keep all other ok, but it's a weird vpn thingy inside ... and it some time go up in flame
it's not master salve as far as i know
hm? Ring sounds like you have a good chance to fail. Cheaper than NtoN?
I love irf rings, they never go down
but it look like that from a quick read
Every core manage there edge switch, but the 10 core talk to each other on that ring and share the routing/vlan ...
it's virtualy transparent to go from one core to the next
don't know about cost, not the one in charge on the network stack... i only deal with it when it fail :D
So often?

Only times I have to fix customer networks is when they try to do something themselves
Because they rarely know what they are doing
Damn users
just enought to always know there are here
Also we don't have customer ...
so we fuck up for ourself, like big kid
sorry, my dumb french ass made a mistake between E and I ...
https://www.juniper.net/documentation/us/en/software/junos/evpn-vxlan/topics/concept/evpns-overview.html
An Ethernet VPN (EVPN) enables you to connect dispersed customer sites using a Layer 2 virtual bridge. As with other types of VPNs, an EVPN consists of customer edge (CE) devices (host, router, or switch) connected to provider edge (PE) routers. The PE routers can include an MPLS edge switch (MES) that acts at the edge of the MPLS infrastructure...
🥖 😵
🤢
also there blog about (i think) the "ring" aspect ... don't work for me.
https://blogs.juniper.net/en-us/enterprise-cloud-and-transformation/evpn-a-path-to-migration
No cypher overlap
we are doing multi core lag without virtual core through evpn
multi core lag? So the different physical ports are on different core switches? o.0
i belive each edge have a upstream to 2 core
FFSake we don' have a simple diagram Oo
Cisco still only does 2 switch vpc i think
I've never seen anything more
Most I've done is 4 switch bagg
But I often do 9 switch irf
does that allow for better throughput? Or more geared for fail safety?
yea, i think our uplink are 40GB each on the small switch
so it's def for redudancy
you think we are up to date ?
ha, I made a purchase request for a 2.5G BASE-T SFP+ module earlier 😂
