most stuff that clings or sticks to a window suffer the same expansion and contraction through the year. smart tint may not flex as much as your typical tint but I highly doubt it doesn't flex at all and when it does if it's right up against the frame it will cause it to pop loose either just the corner or even the whole thing.

#

thats why when you tint your windows there is a gap there

#

to prevent that

if your window frames are wood, those also expand and contract

I need a xmas present ... and i won't be able to wait 300+ day XD
10TO drive ... sooo expensive :(

#

i've heard rumor about hdd from X being bad and Y better... this is the second one in 3 months ... i'm starting to forge an opinion on that brand

clear ferry
#

Well, depends what you need, you don't want smr for zfs

fiery sorrel
#

free/truenas... zfs, so i took none smr drive
But i know you a tinny bit, enough to know that what ever brand i would say, you will reply with 🤮 XD

forest edge
#

why do they make nas drives 6800rpm when they use to be 6400?

fiery sorrel
#

faster more better i guess ?

forest edge
#

no slower is better when it comes to that

fiery sorrel
#

i mean i would love a 15k 10to drive

fiery sorrel
forest edge
#

yes

clear ferry
#

The 6800 is just a average anyway

#

They go different speeds

forest edge
#

still

#

why aren't they 5400

clear ferry
#

The most reasonable is to buy wd external drives and shuck them

fiery sorrel
#

i don't know how much it change the lifetime honestly...

clear ferry
#

They are 5400 sometimes

#

And 7200 sometimes

#

They vary depending on temperature and power

forest edge
#

never seen specs of labeled nas drives ranging like that

stray minnow
#

Hello

fiery sorrel
#

it's not on the label here, i'm looking at some old ebay listing to check what speed it was

#

7200 RPM

forest edge
#

bigger than 4/6TB drives are listed as 7200

#

don't understand why that is either

fiery sorrel
#

they are field with some gas, that may get them higher speed easier, so they go for it

forest edge
#

think only commercial drives use that

#

like peta

clear ferry
#

Helium is pretty normal

forest edge
#

for consumer?

clear ferry
#

Yes

fiery sorrel
#

yes, it's now in almost everything above 5 to i think

forest edge
#

I didn't know that. does it list it on the drive?

fiery sorrel
#

not ON, but in the spec sheet

#

i mean there is just nothing on my drive label ....

forest edge
#

I thought it was really only for those big drives

clear ferry
#

Some do, but it is so normal most don't mention it

#

Even smart has a value for helium level

fiery sorrel

fiery sorrel

#

so even looking at temp could indicate

fiery sorrel
#

na, nothing more ... well not important, but sad :D

forest edge
#

I always ran ironwolf just because I always seem to want a new drive when they go on sale

#

its always freaky timing

fiery sorrel
#

but that's not his usual condition

forest edge
#

mine run around the same temps and they aren't overworked

fiery sorrel
#

maybe a bad batch, maybe a bad case, maybe having 12 of them in a 2U is to much shared vibration

#

maybe i need to store less data ....
NAAAAA !

forest edge
#

alright time to go try and pair some more linkind zigbee sensors

clear ferry
#

Shucking @fiery sorrel

fiery sorrel
#

yeaaaa .... but so many of those are now soldered ... and they are usealy blue drive with poor speed ...

#

i just don't want to deal with another hassle project ...

#

i paid 300€ for a new drive, it will run a couple day of badblock and the an extended smart test. after that, on the spare pille until the next one fail

clear ferry
#

Soldered?

#

Never heard of

fiery sorrel

late gate
#

anyone with synology that have experience why dns manual dns isnt working when ipv6 is enabled?

clear ferry
#

Because IPv6 has built in DNS?

#

Didn't know you had Twitter @forest edge

forest edge
#

if only I cooked.. maybe quad had something to do with that and it was probably tediore who started it by asking the question

late gate
#

Sounds like more hazzle with ipv6 then. Dunno even if its a benefit :p

clear ferry
#

Sure it is

#

For routing purposes

late gate
#

but my whole dns setup collapsed. Probably a small issue

#

I have a local dns server where I route local dns services

clear ferry
#

Betting it's a unifi issue

late gate
#

Unifi doesnt support manual dns entries

#

so running a dns server on synology

clear ferry
#

I've never had issues resolving ipv4 local DNS while also using routable ipv6

late gate
#

I probably will figure it out

#

This is the thing I dont like with UDM. It lacks basic things like manual dns.

clear ferry
#

What a half assed useless product

late gate
#

I had an edgerouter and it was more for pro

#

it support everything from cli

clear ferry
#

Any routing/ firewall software I've run since 2000 has supported manual DNS entries

late gate
#

its just the ui that lacks

clear ferry
#

So what 99% of the userbase uses

#

Got you

late gate
#

I got everything I need from the synology, but I guess its just a routing issue. I would expect it to lookup ipv4 first through normal routes

forest edge
#

ip6 is complicated

#

stupid technological advancements

clear ferry
#

Not really

smoky vector
#

Complicated? Imma have to disagree with you there

forest edge
#

it's not when you were born into it lol

late gate
#

I never really used ipv6

#

never had it on the agenda

#

I just know I want it

clear ferry
#

I've been playing with IPv6 since 2000, but I still don't understand every bit of it, but it's fine

late gate
#

but you are a network guru

smoky vector
#

Basic V6 is basically v4 with longer addresses. There are some other things that you can do that aren't in v4, but you can also mostly ignore them and be fine to start with.

Oh yeah, and no NAT craziness goes a long way to making V6 considerably less complicated to deploy in earnest.

clear ferry
#

Guru is a big word

#

Tech savant is probably more applicable

clear ferry
smoky vector
forest edge
#

all i know if pfsense came setup up generically for both and I had all kind of ip6 dns issues till I removed it and forced ip4

#

that or cloudflairs ip6 dns is trash

clear ferry
smoky vector
#

So...is the issue looking up V6 addresses? Or transporting DNS in V6?

late gate
#

I had a pfsense, but sold it. I should have used it as a router

static schooner
#

I just had to disable ipv6 in pfSense to get my VPN client configured in the router to stop leaking my address. Most don’t support ipv6

forest edge
#

and we're back to why I said ip6 is complicated lol

clear ferry
#

Just user issues

forest edge
#

yea yea

smoky vector
#

🤷 the common thread I'm hearing here is pfsense

clear ferry
#

I've run pfsense since 2004 and opnsense since 2019

#

No issues with IPv6 here

static schooner
#

With great power comes great responsibility

clear ferry
#

Wireguard you can tell to use either IPv6 or ipv4 explicitly

#

If that was an issue

#

And just force all traffic over the tunnel

smoky vector
#

Sure, there are things that don't support V6, or don't support it well maybe, but that's not a complexity of V6, that's a vendor fail.

forest edge
#

so why hasn't everything switched over to it? it's been out quite awhile

static schooner
#

It was working just fine, but I wanted to route all traffic through the VPN client and sometimes ipv6 is preferred and bypassed the VPN, which was just v4 from the provider

smoky vector
#

Because there are lots of people that, when they run into the first thing that needs troubleshooting in v6, just decide to disable it instead.

forest edge
#

👋

smoky vector
#

I saw a Google report the other day...they now have more V6 traffic to their site than they do v4, fwiw.

forest edge
#

that dosen't sound right

#

but cool

static schooner
#

Mac, at least, will use it first. That was the problem I found

clear ferry
#

All isps in Norway have supported IPv6 for many years, but most only with their own network gear

#

Because of their poor man's ipv6 nonsense

smoky vector
#

Most gear will give at least a slight preference to V6 as vendors recognize (for the most part) that it's a technology that needs to be advanced

clear ferry
#

We have supported IPv6 on all our hardware for the last decade, I can still count on one hand the number of customers who run a full IPv6 stack internally

scenic radish
#

ipv6 ❤️

smoky vector
#

Most of the stuff I manage is dual-stack, but there have been some specific networks and systems that I've run v6-only. I tried to do it with HA until I started using esphome. :/

ti's not 100% standard compliant and devices that enter and leave the network shouldn't have dns caching, but outside that, there's no reason not to have your local resolver provide authoritive answers to queries on a subdomain

#

the challenge is a TXT record iirc. It doesn't expose anything

You can take a step further and route all dns via wireguard so local subdomains work remotely so everything works seamless no matter where you are. 😆

clear ferry
#

Pihole 🤢

crisp sapphire
#

This is the strangest thing. It doesnt even appear like its pihole

#

Pihole forwards the request to unbound & gets a response.

clear ferry
crisp sapphire
#

dont tell me its my router or il jump out the window

last cedar
#

First I manually entered dns address as pihole

#

Then to improve it (in preperation for switching over to adguard) I pointed opnsense at pihole

#

And pointed all clients at opn on dns server

crisp sapphire
#

you can stop now. Not switching.

last cedar
#

No, I am not saying you should

#

If you are sending dns requests to your router, it needs to send them to pihole

#

Where is your setup failing?

#

No blocking, or no internet?

crisp sapphire
#

no im not sending them to the router. This is whats going on:

For some reason, NAT devices arent able to resolve dns requests through pihole. So basically, none of my containers can resolve dns. Iv spent the entire day narrowing down the issue to be pihole or something related (e.g unbound).

When i explicity tell an example container to use 1.1.1.1, it works like a charm. As soon as i point it to pihole all hell breaks loose.

#

pihole forwards the request as per the logs and gets a response from unbound. Latency of response suggests unbound's working just fine and actually resolving.

#

so afaik, the only possible middle man here would be the router fucking something up.

#

When i say NAT i mean nested NAT. All devices with direct local addrs can use pihole.

#

but docker uses internal NAT. Iv also tried using the host as network for the containers and that works, which adds even more credibility to my theory

last cedar
#

So only devices on local nat don't work?

#

Everything else works?

crisp sapphire
#

exactly. So my phone at 192.168.0.40 works, but the docker container at 172.20.0.10 doesnt.

#

and again, as soon as i make the container use a local addr (docker host), it starts working.

dusky plank
#

check your iptables

crisp sapphire
#

did, nothing suspect. The containers work fine when pointed to 1.1.1.1 even on the docker internal network

#

just not when pointing to my local range

#

Its a head banger. I wanna throw my laptop.

last cedar
#

I don't understand well enough how it does its own nat, sorry

#

But I think mstone is on the right track

crisp sapphire
#

Afaik iv had this issue forever. I remember not being able to reach local addrs and having strange behaviour. I generally ignored it as the strange stuff didnt get in the way.

#

Its only when i started messing with nats and docker that the issue became aparent

crisp sapphire
#

Time to check router.

last cedar
#

And I still can't get it working haha

crisp sapphire
#

Lol

last cedar
#

Have the nat devices ever worked with a local ip as dns server?

#

Obviously 1111 is external

crisp sapphire
#

its a pain in the ass but man is it great. Iv created and nuked maybe 50 containers today trying to fix this. Not a single dependency installed, not a single change made to the host OS.

#

its an OCD killer. Lets me get real dirty knowing i can just prune it all away.

last cedar
#

I need to build my new 1 box, but I suck too much

crisp sapphire
last cedar
#

But I need to build nas part soon

crisp sapphire
#

well yea thats what iv been saying?

last cedar
#

No

#

I mean ever

#

Not now

crisp sapphire
#

?

last cedar
#

The issue isn't pihole, it is the way it is routed, with the nat

#

Wait, that is what you have been saying

#

Ignore me

crisp sapphire
#

Oh. No i dont belive it is. Maybe i missunderstood the .. oh ok.

#

its fine lol. Were all trying here

crisp sapphire
#

I can ping all ips through container

#

So its def routed

#

and dns goes through

last cedar
#

I just realied I am probaby not helping lol

crisp sapphire
#

so i belive its the response thats the issue

crisp sapphire
last cedar

crisp sapphire
#

#

note: image im using integrates the kernel driver. So no its pretty efficient

dusky plank
#

pro/cons depend on your network mode in use

crisp sapphire
#

internal

#

thinking of switching to host

#

just makes sense, instead of running a dual nested NAT

dusky plank
#

internal meaning bridged?

crisp sapphire
#

yea. Sorry brain fart.

dusky plank
#

why would you do that?

crisp sapphire
#

well i just set it up like an hour ago.

#

still under experimentation.

#

so i should go host mode you reccon? I mean that makes the most sense to me.

dusky plank
#

yes

crisp sapphire
#

Only downside is that i cant map the port to a custom external one. Im using wg-easy, not the official image.

#

could get my hands dirty and do it. But dont feel like redoing the work every time i wanna update

dusky plank
#

you sure can with a config file or env vars

crisp sapphire
#

actually no. Wg-easy only lets you change the web ui port not the wg port.

#

or so i think.

#

Doesnt appear like you can run wg-easy in host mode :/. Whats the worst that could come from running wg in bridge mode @dusky plank ?

What in tarnation

#

I have to Google this

#

Erps?

fiery sorrel
#

where you take multiple core router and connect them in a ring way ...

I don't know what erps is

#

good thing is that you can loose a cable and everything work, you can also loose a core and keep all other ok, but it's a weird vpn thingy inside ... and it some time go up in flame

What in

#

I work with irf

#

It sounds like irf with more steps

fiery sorrel
#

it's not master salve as far as i know

clear ferry
#

Multiple master?

glacial knot
#

hm? Ring sounds like you have a good chance to fail. Cheaper than NtoN?

clear ferry
#

I love irf rings, they never go down

fiery sorrel
#

but it look like that from a quick read

Every core manage there edge switch, but the 10 core talk to each other on that ring and share the routing/vlan ...

#

it's virtualy transparent to go from one core to the next

clear ferry
#

Damn juniper

#

They are Cisco junior

fiery sorrel
#

don't know about cost, not the one in charge on the network stack... i only deal with it when it fail :D

clear ferry
#

So often?

#

Only times I have to fix customer networks is when they try to do something themselves

#

Because they rarely know what they are doing

#

Damn users

fiery sorrel
#

so we fuck up for ourself, like big kid

#

Evpn is nicer than mpls

#

But still a nightmare

fiery sorrel
#

we are doing multi core lag without virtual core through evpn

clear ferry
#

But, lagg has nothing to do with evpn

glacial knot
#

multi core lag? So the different physical ports are on different core switches? o.0

clear ferry
#

We do that with irf

#

Can have up to 9 switches in core

#

With lagg across them

fiery sorrel
#

i belive each edge have a upstream to 2 core

#

FFSake we don' have a simple diagram Oo

clear ferry
#

Cisco still only does 2 switch vpc i think

#

I've never seen anything more

#

Most I've done is 4 switch bagg

#

But I often do 9 switch irf

glacial knot
#

does that allow for better throughput? Or more geared for fail safety?

clear ferry
#

Well, redundancy

#

And seamless upgrades

fiery sorrel
#

yea, i think our uplink are 40GB each on the small switch

#

so it's def for redudancy

clear ferry
#

Yeah, 40g was big 6-7 years ago, today most stuff is 25 or 100

#

Since 2018

fiery sorrel
#

you think we are up to date ?

glacial knot
#

ha, I made a purchase request for a 2.5G BASE-T SFP+ module earlier 😂
