environment can be a dict too if you like. yaml environment: TZ: Europe/Stockholm URL: ${SECRET}
Also;```yaml
volumes:
- /etc/timezone:/etc/timezone```
@clear ferry does price matter as much as with the normal strips? Im assuming it doesnt bcuz they all use the same generic rgb led unlike the strips which can vary greatly in brightness.
how are addressable strips?
ive wanted to get like 1 or 2 super fucking bright Argbw strips
for above my pc
They are addressable
YES I WANT MY WHOLE ROOM TO GLOW FFS

ALL THE RGB
Negative. The controllers are the same but they skimp on the led quality. Iv bought several strips with identical specs only to have a few be half as bright. The naming scheme simply refers to the controller/driver
epileptics worst nightmare
I bought 800 at once, so no idea
144 led/m
And i use less than a roll for projects
i just wana sync my aura sync on my mobo to all my rgb strips so i can have my whole house glow when i get a headshot, DUH
i want every fucking rgb in my house to flash red and orange damn it, i want the cats downstairs to freak out, and my wife to be like UGH
The outdoor ones you showed me should be fine at any price point as the led's are only being produced by a few. Like candy.
So they cant skimp as that would actually increase cost due to economies of scale
Unlike with the 5050's
Lmgtfy
like shift the voltage from 12 to 24?
No
iv never needed a level shifter for some reason. The one time i opted to use one fucked the strip in half and made it flicker like mad. Might've been the shitty breadboard collection idk
not even on my 5m 60 led/m strip pulling over 70W
also how would i use a level shifter in a premade magic home?
thats for analog strips
i made a shop light
no shifter needed as there are no controllers onboard the led strip
because i wanted rgb
Magichome controllers are for analog strips only
Magic home 🤢
They're good tf you on about man. Just shitty wiring. Resolder some thicc boi wire & flash with esphome and your good to go
the real gamble is avoiding the texas chips
yeah i designed up a pogo jig for these boards
i got a hot tip for that
get one with IR sensor
^
also anyone have any experience with running esps outdoor in nordic conditions? Im thinking waterproof junction box & conformal.
Good bad?
i used to work for an isp
know how many inside resi routers ive seen mounted outside?
LOL
too many
i'd say conformal and your fuckin good bud
biggest issue would be condensation i'd imagine
ye but id rather still have that waterproof junc box. Do they work with thin wires?
like the esp im using?
i can show you the insides i think
uhh, i can later, when i can pop one open again
i got 1 left to flash
it uses like 16g inside
ish
maybe 18 on the IR
note im horrible at judging distances and sizes
^ this man knows
FUCK
i gotta go to the dump now
b4 they close and were stuck with everythnig for another week
hello guys... is there anybody here to help me like a coach for setting up a commercial project?
That sounds like a horrible idea
That use to be the highlight of my week about a decade ago.
you dont like helping people where they make money and you do all the work?
it's for the exposure
yuck
I will say the dude and me are chill and he lets me take scrap metal to weld out of the bin
just use the updated flux/magic home integration. works flawlessly. block access to devices at router if need be but is completely local
Where does it look for the secret?
& now the damn magic home thing wont connect to my wifi
something tells me its my 32 digit password messing it up
enbrighten is tuya based
smart home stuff is a lot like appliances. set number of parent companies that have ass loads of siblings under different names except the parent companies don't own the sibling just the software they use
Stewart is a bit out of touch
i figured but the real question was if they were esp or that bl602 thing
i should have just bought them and found out for us and done some testing
$20 for 4 of them is a good deal
tuya stuff switched off esp's awhile back. doubt you will find anything that uses their firmware anymore
if only i knew how to reverse engineer that shit
i'd love to create the new tas
make all the new shit work
unless its old stock
if its Tuya and mentions bluetooth support its not ESP
tuya wasn't using ESP32 chips so that-s a dead giveaway
i basicly only buy something if the repo says it's tas-able
fyi, if you want the magic home's to still be esp
the ones with the IR sensor seem to still be
for led strip controllers
i just bought some
what would you nab?
i have a bunch of H801
im using the 16 foot strips
thats how much in normal units?
like 3m
no
uhh
5m
ish
i want an addressable one i can make sync with aura sync
but i cant figure out making a hue bridge emulation work
h801 is just a controller not a strip?
for something beefier I would use the quinled setups. most those older controllers like the h801 has no built in fuse protection or anything
Did someone say disco kitchen?
Using a dig quad. They’re normally white but it’s fun to play
lol i bought 6 channel strips just so i "could" do that in my kitchen but before I got around to put them up I feel like I would be wasting the rgb part in the kitchen lol
you'd be surprised
having like.. purple/pinkish is kinda fun sometimes
i go through stages of turning them different colors or just whiteish
these were going to be just under cabinet lights. but you seem to went all out hehe
i have them added to hass and a hue motion sensor turns them on/off with motion based on lux in room
along with all the other lights in kitchen
using a blueprint cuz lazy
ya but under counters turned out being really nice
for lighting up drawers
and under bottom cabinets above floor turned out nice too
i have been tempted to segment off the leds above and below dish washer and have those turn red/green based on dish washer being clean/dirty
but i dont have a smart dish washer and didnt want to pull it out or take breaker box apart to fuck with it
so i didnt
maybe if i decide to do crack i will have the energy
just throw a smart plug on the dishwasher plug
oh, mine runs under the sink
there are easy to follow guides with those things you hook over wires
could stick a vibration sensor on it lol
are you saying i need some water
ya honestly not a bad idea on vib sensor or w/e
excuse to play with esphome again
i havent touched it since esp32cam toying
probably best to get rgb just in case for future projects
could make them blink a colour for some reason, or go to a warmer white after dusk
Some people have too much time on their hands 🤣
Is that somebody watching themselves eat chips and popcorn from a previous recording? I'm fascinated
gonna start recording yourself eating then watch it the next day while your eating?
while recording yourself eating watching yourself eating..
then you can watch yourself watch yourself eating while eating and eating while watching all of that as well as recording yourself eating while watching yourself eating while watching yourself eating...
then you wake up norwegian
Hello, We are Home Assistant Trainer Located in Thailand. Just looking to devices / hardware partners.
I am confused. are crescent wrenches rare in Germany? was watching this video and this guy made it seem like they just don't normally exist there. https://youtu.be/W9GXv-i45Xo?t=843
those are channel locks.. that is not similar by any means lol
Sounds to me like he’s saying those specific military wrenches from a country that doesn’t exist anymore are slightly rare?
the other ones are limited
its similar
we call them multigrips here !
vannpumpetang
Pretty uncommon since they usually don’t work properly (so we call them Engländer 😉 )
Nut lathe is a common nickname
Because that’s what they do. Turn nuts into round stock.
what about a "Useless Machine"? It would be pretty hard to let the magic smoke out of one if, when you turn it on it promptly turns itself off!
A useless machine or useless box is a device which has a function but its direct purpose is deliberately unknown.
“Useless machines” have recently gained popularity with commercial success. They could be used as an amusing engineering "hack", or as a joke.
The most well-known "useless machines" are those inspired by Marvin Minsky's design, in ...
pretty sure you can operate that wrong and make it smoke
but its only got ONE control! Its gonna be damn hard to! But if you succeed then I wouldnt let you near ANY electronics 🤣
The kids these days with there tik toks
Ordered a new PC case with some very fancy gamer grade rgb fans and spent the last few hours figuring out how to integrate it all with HA. The 15yo me would have been ecstatic with the possibilities
I'm pretty sure this is why people my age usually have kids. To have an excuse to enjoy juvenile stuff like this
The lights on the fans are addressable so I should be able to just run them off a wled device. Hopefully all fans separately as well so I can make better use of the animations
There's no need for kids... embrace your inner child
It has crossed some weird line for me. It's so tacky that it's almost ironic at this point
pls no shame

There are mods atound who will deal with it without tagging
@midnight adder hey my spammer
i don't even get pm's from spammers
let's all spam mods now
@midnight adder also spamming bitcoin crap
Also, since it is a PM, the best bet is reporting and blocking
<@&330946878646517761>
Please stop tagging mods
🥲
I got that spam from Pilolochu#5280
Maybe if there was a dedicated channel for reporting spam accounts or other abuse then people wouldn't feel a need to tag
How to report?
Long press on the message, report should be an option
When somebody DMs you for the first time there's a SPAM option
Maybe with a standard format to make it easy to do the work
Beyond that, we need a screenshot and their handle to ban them from this server... but if you hit the SPAM button that may achieve more good
block, report, move on
🌊 🌊 🌊
See the pinned message, we need screenshot
arsaboo the rules say to tag a mod in this channel... #rules message
hoisted by their own petard!
Mods hate moderating, it is known
Understandable
Relatable
have a nice day
See the pinned message, we need screenshot
many of the users that spammed are already blocked or have left the HA server
if you see anyone still listed on the server...please let us know
photoshop? You have chromium dev tools way closer
meanwhile, report such users
How do you report spammers ?
Scroll up and read?
Use the Report SPAM button in the DM
Then as explained in the topic and pinned messages, we need a screenshot and their handle
how come I never get the spammers? 🤔
@midnight adder is handle
maybe you are one 😛
I never get any either
We can change that @clear ferry
I've gotten one or two, but rather rarely. Mostly just atx
Lol
pingu is fucking creepy
Have you seen Pingu with Swedish subtitles @last cedar @orchid rose
En kar fra sverige som har lagt til svensk tekst oppå en helt standard pinguepisode, eller deler av denne. Anbefales på det sterkeste!!
At first I was going to say my Swedish isn't good enough, but this was so childish even I could understand it 🙃

Just here to report another spammer (@midnight adder, ID: 914730312653762590 )
We need the user ID/handle too
That avoids issues where there's multiple users with similar looking names, or they've used Unicode
Don't forget to use Discords spam reporting feature
Did that too
pingu was gorgeous as a child
@clever mortar got spam from @midnight adder userid 914727129520939059 sorry for direct ping i can't tag the mods role
You don't need to tag me, just post about it
kk, just saw rules said ping mod role but can't do that so went for the last one i saw heh
Nope!
I dunno how you people think channel locks and crescent wrenches are similar lol one is similar to pliers and the other is similar to a wrench 🤣
yeah, they're completely different
Channel locks and vise grips are useful tools, but they're brute force. Crescent wrenches are more tools of precision
I dunno about precision the south calls them a hillbillies multitool lol
the first two just rely on grabbing onto something as hard as possible damn the consequences, while the last actually tries to conform to and use the geometry of the thing it's manipulating
an adjustable crescent wrench kinda straddles the fence, but fixed wrenches come in millimeter-scale
yea channel locks always seem to be more of a plumbers tool than anything else to me. crescent wrenches i have used on everything at least once
home owners pipe wrench lol
a pipe wrench is pretty great in the right situation, also beats the other tools-of-force
rohrzange ftw
Kraftfahrzeug-Haftpflichtversicherung
Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitänsmütze
But, did it ever visit Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch?
in other obscure and useful tools - sometimes only a strap wrench will do
Harbor Freight FTW
rubber strap wrench is useful for smooth cylindrical stuff like oil filters but I found the rubber was too stretchy on anything that really required some torq
smooth and cylindrical with no damage is definitely the strong point. I was happy to have my cheap set of two when I need to lower a flag pole that requires twisting smooth segments
and a sprinkler anti-syphon valve
lol yea the rubber would still work decent on wet surfaces
Wonder what is going through the cat's head at 0:11...
https://t.co/VKKZh54geN
Typical Au rv trailer companies are starting to convert for US and attempting to sell them in US with outrageous price tags and come to find out these RV's are considered the cheap chinese knockoffs in Australia.
yes, that is for sure what is going through the cat's head at 0:11.
so anyone know why my magic home rgb controller refuses to connect to my wifi?
Anyone had similar issues?
did you flash tas?
Nah. Its not esp based
but someone recommended i just use the magic home integration
word, never used their software
i think i mentioned it to you, but the IR sensor RGBW controllers are still esp
just fyi
Yea sadly cant find any on amazon sweden :/
does it have to be amazon? cause i know places like banggood have them
the difficulty is finding a european seller thats got a resonable price
whatever word means. Its not even a GenZ term i dont think
i guess technicly, "word" and "i hear that" are the same
The '90s called
me too, but not in person sadly
or, well.. depends maybe i did experience it in person, just not in its full glory.
the computer & music side of things
@jade tartan now adays we (genz) use based instead of word.
it means agreeable or i agree.
As a millennial, Zoomers confuse and scare me
why? The humor?
I just learned what "no cap" means the other day which made me realize I'm old
they're the same as millenial just more depressed and shittier humor
as myself, i dont understand a lot of people, but i guess as long as they are happy with their choice, i dont have to
lies
Technically im genz but i dont act like normal genz'ers. Im actually boomery in some of my ways.
but i do understand the humor

Genz dosnt collect this stuff
but boomers sure have the house packed full of antiques
but not blockbuster
B O O M E R
Oh man, blockbuster
I MEMBER
i remember renting n64 games from them
and pleading with my parents for 1 more week
lol
did you try setting them up in the app first?
Iv never been to a blockbuster. Wasnt a thing in sweden. But me & my friend use to go to the local movie rental store every week and rent horror to watch. We called it the "fake block buster"
so in a way.. i did experience blockbuster
It can be fun asking Zoomers if they know what the save icon is
lol
Commander Keen is a series of side-scrolling platform video games developed primarily by id Software. The series consists of six main episodes, a "lost" episode, and a final game; all but the final game were originally released for MS-DOS in 1990 and 1991, while the 2001 Commander Keen was released for the Game Boy Color. The series follows the ...
i remember loading this game
on msdos
with a 5.5 inch floppy
hey atleast zoomer parents wont ask they're kids to pause the online match for dinner
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
small wins.
to be fair, mine didnt
Same, wasnt a gamer.
i just explained it one time and they were like, oh ok
Anyone remember mini disc players? Not sure how popular they were outside the US
yes
i still have a mini disc around some place
no disc drive really tho
lol
i remember burning mini discs
ok so are any of you properly cultured?
Im talkin Commodore 64 and explicit registry flipping.
All i remember are cassettes
and the occational floppy
the 90's called, they want they're 2 MB unfillable drive back
Yeah I had a cassette walkman
i had several
had one of those
Or maybe middle school
big brain
i remember when my grandparents got a cell phone for the RV
big ass antenna
on the roof
a brick the size of a center console as the base
and a little normal handset
And I distinctly remember a poster in the computer lab that said "why be floppy when you can be hard?" in reference to hard drives
LOL
i loved the shit people snuck through in the 90's
so much shit
hell look at disney vhs releases
LOL
Laser disc players. 😎. Still have mine.
at least it can hold a pizza
lol laser disc. my uncle was so sure those were just gonna be the main stream media from then on out. has tons of movies for it and then the format died
cracks me up everytime
I’m amazed at how quickly streaming has equaled or surpassed what you can get on physical media. I can get Dolby Vision HDR 4K Atmos, etc and don’t feel that it’s compromised in any way
BlueRay players were expensive when that was a thing then streaming became a thing as they became cheaper so people jumped
what's crazy is i can get better shit from torrents than you can as a paying customer with a lot of services
iirc netflix caps 4k at like 40mbps? or they did at one point during lockdown
your getting rips of blurays
what I find funny is many blurays come with a streamable download version which makes it easier for pirating, and the streaming services that release early content makes it easier for that stuff to be ripped as well
Yea
Think that was only for Europe during lockdown last year
Remember Duke Nukem? Hexen? Doom?
but they were kewl classics!. Much better than your shitty pokemon crap
duke nukem was my favorite lol

i have a client which shows a unknown route and I have no idea where it comes from, anybody have recommendations where to look? no interface has the subnet, wireguard was installed and connected with that route but I also removed that by now
Reminds me of my friend who had a linux server running on a laptop in his closet
he moved out at 15
he found it when he was 21 and back home for a visit
@dusky plank I've often had to find "rogue" machines, I usually just follow the mac address tables
doesn't help much with wifi devices though... you get a certain sense of where they might be
Noice
got my NSX-T lab fully up and running
with SNAT in and out
and BGP towards opnsense
that reminds me of a story where this was actually true. Only way to find it was to trace the cable - The server was found behind a wall that had been put in some time ago. Must have been a unix server, cos windows didnt have that sort of uptime lol
I've actually had a customer do that @strange crag
roughly, 12 years ago
said room was converted into a closet, but the cable went straight into the wall from the DC
I went down the HD DVD route, better technology than Blu-ray apparently, just like Beta Max was to VHS. I've got quite a few movies but sadly when I fired up the Toshiba HD-XE1 (btw best remote ever) recently she died on me and is now RIP in Media Player heaven.
Well... I'm off through the snow to have the winter tires put on. This will be a slooow journey.
Say what again, i dare you, i double dare you.
This is why we put on winter tires before snow comes
We do?
Or just buy a new car with the winter tires already on
20" winter tires though 😢
Ouch
there is medication for that
Gotta leave in a min to go get fingerprinted and backround check for new job
Proper federal backround check
I'm cleared at the highest military levels, I have never been fingerprinted 😄
Sounds like dystopian murica
Yeah unfortunately
Reminds me, I need to check why my oracle VM wasn't responding
Made it!
Barely
Had to slide uncontrollably down a hill backwards and pick a different route once.
Next year I’m not waiting
But I booked this time two weeks ago, and the snow arrived this morning…
Ah, just 1.5h until I have an active OOO email saying "piss off, I'm gone until febuary"
Nice!
On a fun note today. Roof space got to 50c with the sun and heat
Ooof
We had -11c here yesterday
my office is currently 15.5c, glad this is the last day here for two months
On and an even funnier note - I have worked inside roof spaces at that temp in the dust and the glass fibre insulation. Itch for days!
hopefully one of these days some bright spark will come up with some non toxic friendly insulation.
Yep
Oh god I feel so sorry for you on that
I did work in my roof last week
I didn't have a temp sensor up there
But it was 30 degrees outside
No anticon
I actually didn't have any fibreglass woes though
I wore vented goggles, a P2 mask and some gloves
yeah - the joys of cable running in summer. Although I feel even sorrier for people who install or work on top of a bright shiny tin roof in the sun.
my attic is a pain in the ass. hip roof with a very low pitch means i basically can't stand up anywhere in it, which means shuffling on 1x6 boards that are (thankfully) up there
Otherwise I was just in shorts and a tshirt
My roof is actually pretty okay
If I put some boards up there it would be even betyer
But I need to go over the entire roof and supplement the insulation
The norwegian attics are usually called kryploft which directly translates to crawlattic which is a pita when you are 185cm
Then probably crosshatch R4 everywhere
I’ve never actually been up into my roof before funnily enough. No real need too
Poked my head up there before though
That's what the dropbears want you to think
I was in overalls - stops most of the fibreglass, but heats you up even more. Also most australian roof spaces do not have crawl boards - you crawl across the rafters.
Have an old gravity fed hot water heater up there that’s just left because no need 😂
|| why do you need to heat the water if it's already hot ||
Winter exists 😛
Yeah I could do with a water aircon tbh during summer
Don't get evap it's a terrible technology
yes but no one here has large roof spaces so no one puts boards up there
You don't need much
Just a few ripped sheets of particleboard
Makes a hugggeee difference
Get scraps from verge collection
Nah was only teasing about the aircon. We’ve got reverse cycle for heating upstairs though. Works well
(Plus daikin + home assistant works very well)
in summer in some places if you run the cold water for a minute you get hot water. Better to run it for shorter time lol Yes doesnt make sense.
Stupid braemar heater downstairs, works fine but very closed smart control there
What's a braemar
Brand of central heating
Gas?
Yep
Ew. Get that thing in landfill as soon as you can
We couldn’t do much else unfortunately. Not without considerable expense
It’s brand new lol
Cheaper to run than electricity though
Fortunately ducted gas is rare in Perth
gas heating is bettter than electric
It’s everywhere in Melbourne
for those of you in murica - gas here means propane
Natural gas
heat pumps are great
Propane is what you swap out at Bunnings
when norwegian power isn't 1800% of normal
same thing - just not petrol!
I have three heat pumps
We can’t actually do any change to our ducting here. Met requirements back in the 90s, not anymore (underfloor ducts for downstairs). Anything else other than a straight swap would require far more cost to do. Don’t worry we did consider it 🤣
Fuck splits. Take up so much room on the walls
Unless you have ducts in your thermal envelope, (spoiler alert no one does)
Plus need bulky outdoor units
I cant really see any difference between an electric heatpump for your hotwater and a standard electric hotwater service
That's a fair call
But for heating and cooling, heat pumps are king, queen, and the whole court
Splits will cost you like 25% the cost to run for equivalent capacity
I guarantee it
my split runs down to -20c ish
which is nice too
then I start pouring wood into the stove
and cools the house fine up to +35c outside temp
It's all about energy out for energy in. Heat pumps produce more heating/cooling than they consume
Plus gas requires another utility
If it’s already connected it doesn’t change too much
You pay for it
GAS 🤢
how? they are both using heating elements ( only talking hot water here)
air to air splits
Hot water? Heat pump hot water doesn't use heating elements
everything else is nonsense
There's plenty of good articles on how heat pumps work, sounds like you need to read some 😛
I can't blame someone for getting resistive element hot water though
how many times have you lost power? versus how many time do you lose gas? Gas wins hands down. Less interruption and cheaper
Heat pump hot water is much more expensive and fragile
Lol losing power
That's like a 6 hour every 3+ year event
yeah, my samsung has a COP of 3.4
At best
I did read the blurb on heat pumps, but they still didnt convince me. Still looks like a conspiracy to sell new stuff
Heat pumps for water seem they come with tiny hot water tanks though. Which isn’t great from what I can see
You're moving energy around, and even at -40C/F there's a lot of energy there
Lots of heat pumps are standalone tanks and heat pumps
What’s the largest size that’s usually around
320L?
We got a quote, max was 200l
Hmm will need to look at whether 320L would be suitable
Either that or we would go instant flow hot water
a lot of people go for the instant gas hotwater, but thats much more expensive even though its supposed to save money by only being heated when you need it.
it has to consume lots more gas to heat the flowing water
You'll likely see a cost saving of about 70-80% energy consumption charges for heat pump hot water
for a holiday house it would make sense tho
When you don’t use it as much it’ll end up being cheaper. Since it’s not heating constantly to keep warm (eg holiday home)
Yeah
Unless you deal with install cost of new units
If you already have ducted stuff it’s far cheaper to just replace with a ducted unit
We're talking Superman vs Nacho Libre.
How much does a new duct heater cost
And what's your gas bill
Split systems are quite cheap
how long does it take for your heat pump to warm you up? does it have to be on a day or so in advance?
you could run biogas if you are so inclined lol
Biogas? From where
your arse! Sorry - if youi go to the off grid pages yoiu can find how to make your own biogas
But why not just use a heat pump
Rather than manage your own waste treatment plant and gas processing
About $2k per room right?
1-2k that is I guess
You don't need it in every room
That's a sign your house is in dire need of other things
During summer at least in my house you would be lucky to have one split system heat or cool an entire floor
Not without running it constantly
One room would end up warm. The others slowly if at all
Melbourne 1970's home's are common, and we cant knock down everything, in this video we cover a serious business retrofit of a poor performing old AV Jennings 1970's home to a high performer, where building performance is of the foremost of importance. Over a period of time, airtightness, effective ventilation, insulation consistency and glazin...
Here you go
Old 1970s Victorian home
Gas ducted heating, evaporative ducted cooling, 2 box aircondtioners
All ripped out
And replaced with a single 3kw split
yeah - evap is shit
7:53 timestamp
It doesn't get that hot or cold inside
That's the point of fixing all the things wrong with Australian houses
We have some of the worst housing standards/expectations in the developed world
Did they cover how to inject insulation into a brick walled house? Without ripping plaster off that is
Yes
Since that just seems expensive when we looked into it
That's important to do but there's a dozen things with higher impact to do first
What would be the key issue then
Oh god that would be thousands and thousands. Be more than the money saved
Every window, door, etc would be replaced
Not necessarily,
Plus theres comfort * cost * health
It's not an apples to oranges comparision
Hence why the video says 'comfort and energy makeover'
Regardless of any of the above, parents house and they hate split systems and how they look. Prefer hidden systems like ducted
Small cost is better than big units sticking out
Also just having a smarter controller for the gas central heating meant it didn't need to run as much as the old unit (that was touching 30 years old with a mercury bulb thermostat)
I'm off to bed,
But most of your air tightness loss isn't actually coming from your windows and doors
My bet is you have exhaust fans in your bathrooms and toilets
With no dampers
And rangehood
awful lot of insulation going on tho
as calmelb said would have cost heaps to do and to hell with any tradie who comes to do a later job - its all gummed up
also they didnt say anything about windows - betting they were double glazed at least.
In the walls?
Insulation is off topic for what I'm talking about right now,
But blown in insulation doesn't effect running new cables etc
But none of this is all or nothing
It's about strategically attacking the weakest link incrementally
Which I can almost guarantee is your exhaust fans
Then door and window weather strips
And downlights
None of that is big ticket items
And can all be fixed in a long weekend for very little cost and have a huge payback
Assuming you don't have a fireplace
If so that thing is the first to go
What if you actually like having a fireplace thoguh
they sealed the join between the roof insulation and the wall insulation - which is where any cables can be dropped down the wall to appear on a wall plate.
@strange crag are you a sparkie?
also they sealed the underfloor area - so no cables and pipes can be run afterwards. I would hate to be a tradie at that place - or I would charge sooo much to fix all the stuff I would need to break to get my job done
used to be a cable jockey
What did that involve?
Ahh nice
thats why I know about hot roofs etc and wall cavities
Makes sense
I looked into being certified cabler to run my own ethernet at home, but stupid amount of supervised experience needed 😄
Can anyone tell me, or point me to some info on the possibliltiy of using openCV on a headless and gui'less rpi? Want to be able to recognise things and act on it. Have seen plenty of utubes, but all use a gui.
heheh I didnt need to be certified back then (telstra), but it helps to be insane lol
What does openCV do?
Or Terminators
can also be used for licence plate detection - or other objects
Yeah just want to actually be able to put an ethernet cable in if I wanted to rather than tucking it around the carpet or around the roof/ etc. Not fun
Ooh thats cool
HA has some integrations for that too
just dont run your data cables in parallel with other data or power cables or they pick up noise ( even the shielded ones do)
@clever mortar what sort of integrations? Certainly wont be under opencv and integrations dont have any blurb that goes with it before you hit the install button lol
Yeah I live in an apartment, I don't want the body corporate getting their noses stuck into what would be an illegal install. Understand you don't want them together if possible of course (just like I would know how to install a light switch or power point, but again insurance and risk of death/ no money/ fire/ body corporate)
Have you seen boston dynamics robots - the humanoid one is sort of like the terminator!
yeah - fair enuff on that front calmelb
First time apartment living is interesting
Found out that im limited to 1 type of lock due to the front door being a fire door
Shove a camera inside against your windows
Which is not fun
well I am greatly surprised - thanks mate!
Don
*dont think I will need a camera
But it is on the cards 😄
I have 4 in my apartment
Probably don't need any internal to the apartment, but still thinking about where they could go
Wondering about the peephole cameras…
I have my reserved parking in view of my bedroom window… so camera there
hey Cal - dont you need a HA bot? lol
Balcony, camera there
What do you mean?
I use frigate for presence detection, so cameras that are firewalled off from the world inside
Works really well with zones
one that recognises you, unlocks the door, turns on the tunes, etc etc
More like keep the lights on if a person is still in the room
Would be fun to have, no smart door lock that is fire safe rated though. Hell only deadlatch is the lockwood 001. Bloody monopoly there
1 camera = 5,6? Occupancy sensors
Fire safe?
What about those that go on the deadbolt?
You can still manually rotate it
No deadbolt allowed. Deadlatch only
And if I am to appease the fire department it has to be completely free of anything smart that could hinder it from opening
Its crazy insane and not fun
could make a servo controlled attachment for your door lock? Now thats getting keen lol
OTOH having a camera outside the door can warn you of incoming visitors and if recognised then saying their names
Since when can you not have a deadbolt?
Door opens to a fire/smoke proof staircase. Strict rules have to be there
Deadbolt can prevent the door from fully closing. Has to be a latch only
But not your room door
Apartment door is what opens to the staircase. Thats the entrance to my apartment generally
No point having a lock on my bedroom lol
State?
victoria
Probably some state dependent bullshit
will probably be national on that one
Nah this is for the ACT (moving there soon)
But its a national standard for fire doors
Additionally, all external doors that can be locked must be secured with a functioning deadlock. This applies to all tenants renting out a residential space.
you gonna have to change your name ! Calact
Im still a melbourne boy at heart! 😄
actually - following your current naming scheme it should be calcan
deadlatch
You can have one….
where are you MichaelW?
This is the sort of stuff that we're allowed @brisk glen
It has to be fire approved though
Which not many are unfortunately. No smart ones are
cos in the event of a fire there may be no power so door would be stuffed.
Even the lockwood 001 smart add on specifically says it isn't fire rated
Where is this fire proof
But where does it say this?
The august smart lock goes on an existing dead latch
So you get one that is fireproof
In the case of Fire Doors, the lock must be self-latching and be fire rated in accordance with AS1905.1. A fire rated automatic door closer must also be fitted. Only fire rated hardware may be fitted to fire rated doors.
Fire door….
and the only other way out is a drop from the balcony>???
It opens to a fire/smoke proof staircase so must meet all the rules
PITA but eh not much I can do
is it a highrise or smaller?
2 story (well 3 including a carpark)
suburban is probably a better term?
Well it sure is required to meet the requirements
And is rated to be a fire door
So I don't fancy making a mistake and getting a fine and a new fire door
The actual doorset is only a part of the Exit from a building.
Not if it is part of a fire/smoke proof staircase. Then each apartment building must have a proper door
Fire Door: A Fire Door is a door that enters a fireproof stairway or tunnel. The door itself is made from a special fire resistant material, and has a fire rating compliance tag fitted to the hinge edge of the door. A steel fire resistant door frame is also used.
Ok but nothing is stopping you from replacing the deadlock turn knob
Well if it isn't fire safe then the fire department sure is
The dead latch itself is fireproof
Because the fire doors get inspected annually
And if any part isn't up to standard I can't
All compliance is met
All of them say not to be fitted on a fire door (if they're from australia)
For example this one: https://www.lockweb.com.au/en/lockwood-products/keyless-entry/001touch-keyless-deadlatch/
I just really don't want to get fines from the body corporate & the fire department if I make the door not in code
is that the one in melb or canberra?
Apartment is in canberra
Parents house in Melb, house so we can do whatever we want (within reason) but no fire door there
bummer - if it was the other way aroujnd it would only be for a short time, but thats the way the biscuit crumbles lol
Unless it is clear that it says it can be fitted to a fire door Im not gonna make any risks
Ill just accept a dumb lock
Can you change out the knob on the dead latch?
On the inside? If that can't be nudged with your arm then its not up to standard
Just like powerpoints and switches, unless it comes with an australian standard for this sort of stuff I am not gonna risk it
We have tested August on many different types of single cylinder deadbolts. Below is a list of deadbolts that we have tested that are compatible with August ...
Contact them, say you really want to buy their product but are not sure about the upside down ausi laws
Let them confirm it for you 🙂 any sales rep will send a quick email to the company lawyer for confirmation
I would be surprised if they would meet requirements. Given lockwood (major player here) hasn't done anything then there must be a larger issue
This does not replace the entire lock
More than likely that a) it needs to be a latch not a bolt, b) still needs to have all parts fire safe
Not if its built into the unit, which I wouldn't be surprised if it is
Remember, fire standard means the whole unit
One change and its no longer up to the standard
And for something that carries heavy fines Im happy to just stay on the safe side overall
Also because the lock is more like this type which isn't compatible
I am with Cal on this one - messing with the firestandards is bad!
Fire standards and electrical standards are the two things I don’t mess with. Especially with some of the electrical stuff from China 😂
Anything from Ali express is a fire hazard
heck even american stuff is bad cos they dont seem to understand that 240v is much worse than 120v lol
What do you mean it’s double the power 😄
#integrations-archived if you’ve already chosen the hardware!
should be integrations
Or #cameras-archived if you want help picking a webcam
Then #integrations-archived would be perfect!
(Hope it’s not also streaming to the internet too)
Smart
you might also note that there may be 2 streams from it
one that is full def and one that is less than full def
Keep that dam thing in its own VLAN with no network access
goodnight gents - enjoy
Night!
Hi, I have an issue with my HA MQTT Mosquitto broker not receiving messages but it's working fine on a locally running Mosquitto instance, is this the right place to ask for troubleshooting help?
My bad, apologies
If that's the Mosquitto add-on you should start in the #add-ons-archived channel
Would this fall under #integrations-archived or #add-ons-archived ?
Got it, thank you
I'm going to have to tame my desires. I'm up to like $4000 on automating my home lol
ouch
eventually you'll run out of things to automate - or money
or the will to live
That's usually the second step when picking up HA
Once you figure it out, it's too easy to do most things to lose the will to live
I spend more than that on roadside sausages per year
Sausage is a euphemism here right?
socks to be you, I'm all done
who tf is responsible for the naming of SAT>IP
it's got basically nothing to do with IP
What is that? Murica tech?
it's actually quite impressive how much data bandwidth a satellite has
Yes, it's in pretty low orbit so
Before Elon crashes them all down with his 5000 or so satellites 🙂
Crashing starlink you say, great way to get rural America offline
T-Mobile 5g home internet is nice, 500 down, 40 up
Rural area
Not enough density to ever make it congested due to how far apart the houses are
Upstream though? It could well be a relay station close by?
It’s Michigan
Only congestion is when the tower is down for a day, but there’s another tower that still gives ok speeds
Tower is only down for repairs etc
Fair enough!
and its pretty shitty in comparison to what they're aiming for. But fundementally speaking there's nothing limiting the sats from pushing 10's of Tbps down to 10's of thousands of dishes. Unlike wifi (and almost all other radios), spectrum isnt the limiting factor.
Almost as good as the data capped 1000/10 fiber i hear about
It’s T-Mobile or atnt trying to charge insane fees or starlink

Some junk cars i revived last few years
Dis U @last cedar ?
which one?
you still are
Such multiplier wow
Is that yours?
Yeah
Got the P cores at 5 GHz, and the E cores at 4.1 GHz. Cinebench R23 score: 20,000
Be careful, the amd fanbois will surely arrive soon and say Intel is dead soon
Let 'em squawk. This i5 12600k costs the same as a Ryzen 5 5600x, and is twice as fast 🤷♀️

The i5 12600k is actually faster than every single 11th gen chip (including the Core i9 11900k)
Intel basically made 11th gen pointless with a $299 chip
Risc-V Fanboy here
ya'll burn in hell soon
the i5 might be blazing fast, but its also blazing a lot of power into oblivion
but for now, i'm still happy with my 3600 and dont need to bother with a new cpu
that small intel die 🤏 overheat much, very limit heatdissipation
Not really. Idle temp of 28c, load temp of 65c
And that's overclocked...
On air cooling...
look at the power usage
Reports of 12th gen being hot were greatly exagerated
have you seen the m1max ?
super coooool ❄️
My old i7 5960x got near 260w while overclocked
my r5 3600 is at 45w at full load stock
It also offers less than half the performance of a 12600k...
Did someone say itanium
