Hi, I'm interested in building my own home automation with as many open source services/apis or scripts I can write myself. I am new to home automation, but I am a young software developer and currently do a lot with Docker, Kubernetes, Java, Python etc. I was wondering what home assistant installation people recommend if I want to be very flexible with my own services deployed on my own server in a Kubernetes cluster? Could home assistant perhaps also be deployed on Kubernetes so that it is easier to access those other self-written services?

forest edge
umbral cliff

Personally I’m not a fan of even adaptive cruise control, because it makes people lazy

forest edge
#

try taking a trip that involves driving for 8+ hours without cruise control

umbral cliff
#

Oh cruise control itself I like

#

Because yes it’s useful

#

It’s the adaptive cruise I don’t like

#

Because controlling your space between a vehicle in front means you’re concentrating

forest edge
#

I kind of like it, it just makes sure you don't always have to toggle it on and off when alittle traffic builds up

#

our forester will even come to a complete stop. you could in essence cruise control through city streets lol

umbral cliff
#

I guess 8 hour road trips in australia are a lot easier than elsewhere. Get out of the city and you’ve got 7 hours of empty freeway

forest edge
#

it's not about easy, it's about your leg or foot cramping etc

#

rather than having to stop a lot to "stretch" you can continue to drive a whole lot further with your feet off the pedals

#

I like the advancement of tech in cars, adds extra layers of saftey but what I don't like is that tech kind of adds a hard expiration date to vehicles

#

a person should really only ever own 2-3 cars within a lifetime, excluding accidents etc but now with all the tech and that shit always fails after the first couple of decades and being so expensive that buying a new car ultimatly cheaper than fixing

#

it's just bs

Yeah I agree with emergency break. You can have that without adaptive cruise though

hushed basalt
#

They used to require intense manual correction just to hover in place, let alone cruise

clear ferry
#

Makes no sense to have radar without having ACC

hushed basalt
#

Pilots got extremely tired very quickly

#

I'd rather have billions people using ACC than not

clear ferry
#

What really grinds my gears is that people with modern cars have noe idea HOW TO FUCKING USE THE PARKING LIGHTS

#

Especially in winter Norway

umbral cliff
#

In australia we have 0 use for parking lights so most here (including myself) really have no clue when to use them 😂

clear ferry
#

In Northern norway we have 2 months without sunlight

#

In the south the sun is just low

umbral cliff
#

What I love here though is people drive with fog lights on 24/7 then as soon as it’s foggy they turn them off

clear ferry
#

Driving with fog lights is legal in norway, if it is at daytime, and you turn your regular headlights off

#

if you drive with both on or with fog lights in the evening it's fines

umbral cliff
#

Here fog lights can’t be on without headlights on

clear ferry
#

it's a shame that the police aren't enforcing it more

#

it's fucking annoying

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

exactly

#

fog lights + wet road = a fucking nightmare btw

forest edge
#

your fog lights are unproperly aimed then

clever mortar
#

Even when correctly aimed they're a nightmare in the rain

clear ferry
clever mortar
#

That's a function of how they're designed to work ... in fog

forest edge
#

never had issues but then I drive a truck

clear ferry
#

Remember about 15 years ago I was doing a commute from Tromsø to Narvik, and the snow was so heavy the only way I actually saw the road was driving with parking lights on, that was... fun

forest edge
#

only time i ever had issues was driving through kansas in the middle of the night on a country road during a really bad hail storm

#

the hail was like the size of marbles and that made seeing anything impossible lol

clear ferry
#

HAIL

clever mortar
#

I've been out in fog that was heavy enough that you couldn't see the road directly in front of the car, no matter what you did with lights. That was pretty damn scary

#

I've also been out in rain heavy enough that you could see more than a couple of meters in front of the car. That's damn scary when you were doing 60 MPH along twisty country roads and that starts...

forest edge
#

yellow vs white fog lights make a difference too so I hear. never had a vehicle with actual yellow fog lights to test that out tho

clear ferry
#

My previous neighbour drove his Peugeot with both yellow fog and headlights

forest edge
#

yea some vehicles have them yellow

#

aftermarket is common to be yellow too

#

especially for 4x4'ers

clear ferry
#

Don't think I've seen a car have yellow headlights since the 80s

#

except his car

forest edge
#

yea i don't know why they are so random. maybe they are worse for oncoming traffic or something

umbral cliff
umbral cliff
forest edge
#

el camino? no

#

truck as in full size truck

low harness
#

If I can't see more than five meters or so I usually stop by the roadside and wait it out. Don't want to get hit from behind.

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

thats what I thought you meant lol

umbral cliff
low harness
#

Exactly. Always assume everyone else on the road is a complete idiot and you'll be safer.

umbral cliff
low harness
#

... and not far off...

umbral cliff
forest edge
umbral cliff
#

On a highway was going 80kmh and a taxi decides he’s going to merge into the right hand lane where I am. Nearly pushed me off the road

strange crag
umbral cliff
umbral cliff
forest edge
strange crag
forest edge
#

we call cars, cars, trucks trucks and semi's semi's or tractor trailers lol

clear ferry
#

I can count the incidents of fog the last 10 years on two hands probably

umbral cliff
low harness
#

So a "semitruck" is significantly larger than a truck?

forest edge
#

not sure what ute is? you mean utv?

umbral cliff
#

Ute is what you call a truck

low harness
#

Ah, English.

strange crag
clear ferry
#

99.9999% of fog lights are white

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

apparently not where he lives

umbral cliff
strange crag
forest edge
#

ute is a weird name to my ears lol

strange crag
#

stands for utility vehicle

forest edge
#

we refer to those as utv

#

or in the compact sense, suv

strange crag
umbral cliff
#

Ute is just such an Aussie word 😂

umbral cliff
strange crag
#

yeah we have SUV and 4x4 as well

umbral cliff
#

/ white fogs

clear ferry
#

Australia doesn't count, you guys have the strangest rules in the world

strange crag
#

lol

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

Exactly

forest edge
#

wtf lol

umbral cliff
#

Dates back to the days of copper phone lines. Where if you tried to do in home wiring you could cause damage

#

Nowadays it’s kinda useless

#

Also just took a photo of my parents bmw’s fog lights (had to go drive it anyway). See white/ clear!

strange crag
#

well you can run your own cables, but if it causes a problem with the house burning down then insurance isnt going to cover it, but insureance always seeks to avoid paying anyway even if its not your fault

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

fog lights on cars seems silly to me

clear ferry
#

My insurance just got bumped from $300k to unlimited because I got accepted to the Norwegian Engineering Association, plus I got a lot of other nice perks

#

that was nice

forest edge
#

fog light beams are blanket span. it's no wonder being that close to the ground people have issues

strange crag
#

phone lines only had a max of 100v A/C on them when ringing. Normally at customer premises it was like 6v DC. If you were close to the exchange you might get some back emf from relays at a couple thousand volts, but stuff all current. I used to work in a crossbar exchange, got zapped a few times - still alive lol

forest edge
#

unlimited.. wtf

#

100 seems high lol

clear ferry
#

It's not that high tbh

forest edge
#

ours is like half that, just enough for people to tap into to charge thier phones during an outage lol

strange crag
#

for experts on fog - anyone here from england? Apparently they have pea soup fogs

forest edge
#

ask tinkerer, he stated he had to "swim" through some thick shit a few times lol

strange crag
#

have measured the ring current both at the ringer and further out. Definitely 100 VAC

clear ferry
#

I thought ISDN maxed out at 80v or so

strange crag
#

its not isdn

forest edge
#

he's talking old classic telephone

#

aussies need the power in the pinch to do some on the site make shift welding lol

strange crag
#

correct - pre electronic exchange, altho they still use some of that stuff too

clear ferry
#

norwegian guidelines say -48v default voltage, 90v when ringing here

umbral cliff
#

@strange crag what voltage would nbn fttn be?

strange crag
#

yeah 50v in the exchange for internal workings. love the size of the busbars!

#

Fibre shouldnt have any voltage - it just carries light.

umbral cliff
#

Would that still operate at 50v?

clear ferry
#

lol copper

strange crag
#

probably would be 50v, but I dont know for sure

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

Australia, little murica

umbral cliff
#

I’m still very happy the apartment I’m moving into has FTTP

#

Nice and modern

clear ferry
#

FTTH or bust

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

It is not, it implies sharing

#

😄

umbral cliff
#

For australia it means fibre to the home or apartment. There’s no copper in sight for that

strange crag
#

yeah australia was going to get fibre to the premises, but then the politicians got involved and it got commuted to fibre to the node (end of the street) and copper to the house. Now they want to go the rest of the way and are finding out that for the last short distance its going to be just has expensive as the original full rollout. What idiots!

clear ferry
#

I would call premise a shared building, like an office building or apartment building

#

while a house is a single family location

strange crag
#

well we are talking about to the house in this case calmelb was correct

clear ferry
#

apartment != house

#

😉

strange crag
#

a business can have many lines in

umbral cliff
clever mortar
#

UK uses the term FTTP for "to the dwelling unit" - house/flat/whatever

strange crag
#

yes for apartments/flats would only be one cable

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

That would be different then, the FTTP stuff here is one fiber to the complex, then distributed via patch panels \ switches to apartments afaik

strange crag
#

and that would still be acceptable

#

but copper isnt in these modern days

clear ferry
#

It only happens in large cities where it isn't feasible to do a full new install, FTTH has been the norm since 2004\5

umbral cliff
#

Yeah unsure if it’s multiple fibre to each apartment or one to the block then fibre split out to each apartment but regardless it’s still fibre to each apartment

umbral cliff
#

At least my parents place has HFC so it’s probably the best non FTTP place

#

(Since we can get gigabit down if we wanted)

clear ferry
#

American Gigabit you say

#

1000\10

#

gr8

#

😄

strange crag
#

hahaha

clear ferry
#

Also max 25GB transfer per month!

strange crag
#

only 25GB? that sux

umbral cliff
#

Yeah at least all plans here can do unlimited data 😂

#

Even if you end up with 12/2 on a pensioner plan

strange crag
#

even if they slow it down after a certain amounmt!

clear ferry
#

Limited data, lol what a dystopian pipedream

umbral cliff
#

Think even telstra got rid of data caps for fixed line in 2014 or so

#

And they’re usually the ones to rip you off

strange crag
#

they still ripyou off - lowest data caps in the country

umbral cliff
strange crag
#

for their unlimited plans you still get restricted at about 40Gig

umbral cliff
#

I’ve put 1TB over one of those and no issues

#

It’s proper unlimited for fixed line

strange crag
#

its called their fair use policy

umbral cliff
#

Never had any issues from it before

strange crag
#

maybe not, but the clause is still there

umbral cliff
#

Yeah it’s probably one of the few ones that are never enforced though

strange crag
#

it was early on -= not sure now though since others now have unlimited

clear ferry
#

I cleared my stats in the middle of october when I moved to a new box

umbral cliff
#

Just looked at their policy, just says high usage of domestic service with no data cap will not be enforced under their fair use

forest edge
#

man my next house will have a digital temp shower control

strange crag
umbral cliff
#

The TOS just seem to be the usual no business on domestic connection

strange crag
#

Can run a business, but dont expect to get Telstra stuff done quickly! Hell I was running a business service with them and moved premises and they gave me a domestic service with port 25 blocked and I was running a mail server. I moved a couple of streets so the data port was available, but they wouldnt move it from the old location to the new one.

clear ferry
#

hosting mail locally 🤢

#

that is just disgusting

strange crag
#

hehehe

clear ferry
strange crag
#

dont knock it till you try it!

umbral cliff
#

I’m happy to pay for someone to host my email

clear ferry
#

I did it 22 years ago

#

Then I moved to cloud

strange crag
#

I did it about 10 years ago

#

until telstra stuffed it up - then I move to cloud

clear ferry
#

The only customers I still have with local mail servers are military, everyone else has common sense

strange crag
#

hehehe yeah military inteligence is an oxymoron lol

forest edge
#

most companies have their own

clear ferry
#

Sounds like murica

forest edge
#

hell the shitty retail store i worked at eons ago had it's own lol

#

eternal mail servers for "security"

#

I remember when I worked at Gateway and accidently sent something to a friend of mine then had my manager tell me to not do that the next day was both funny and scary

#

bastards reading our work given mail.

clear ferry
#

That definitively sounds like murica

forest edge
#

surprised your not forced to use an eternal service

clear ferry
#

I have no idea what that is

forest edge
#

lol eternal, internal

#

that is 4am typing is what that is

clear ferry
#

Yeah, no, even the norwegian goverment moved to cloud mail now that they didn't manage to keep their servers patched for 0day vulnerabilities

forest edge
#

I mean I guess for such a small country that isn't a big deal but holy hell the security issues with that lol

clear ferry
#

Cloud mail servers > local mail servers

forest edge
#

I mean.. no..

clear ferry
#

I mean yes

clever mortar
#

Eh, depends on where you move it to. If you're using Uncle Tom's cloud hosting sure you have an issue. If you're moving to one of the big players... they're probably better at security than your local IT idiots

forest edge
#

maybe if it was hosted out of your grandma's basement...

clear ferry
#

MS patches their mailservers continiously

#

they even have the patches before they are publicly released

#

And if you send sensitive \ confidential information over mail, then you are the problem, not the mailsystem

forest edge
umbral cliff
clever mortar
#

All comes down to the quality and experience of the various teams, but I know I'm more comfortable letting big player host my email than DIY

clear ferry
#

Exactly, the servers can be VPNed into the corp network so only outgoing mail actually traverses the internet @umbral cliff

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

really only small companies and citizens use cloud here. sure there are some exceptions, some bigger companies may use something like MS or even some gov branches in some states or something but for the most part everyone hosts thier own and prefer it that way

clear ferry
#

I would too in the US where my data isn't really protected in any way from anyone kek

forest edge
#

outbound is all in the same basket

strange crag
#

Early on MS was running unix servers as their interface to the internet. When that fact was discovered MS turned off the service that showed that. To this day they may still be running unix servers or they may have changed them to linux boxes lol

forest edge
#

it's the internal aspect they like, the features and control

#

I don't think MS ever had issues with linux

#

mostly the other way around lol

strange crag

How does HA invoke its messaging to alert the user?

MS wanted linux removed from existance as it was competing with MS and was free. They still dont like it - just look at TPM2.0 - designed to stop linux being installed on the computer. It will only be a temporary stopgap, but still....
On another note they have an Ubuntu app on win10 and may actually be using some linux code in the development of windows.

umbral cliff
#

I doubt TPM will be used to lock desktops down to prevent a new os at the very least, even laptops would be unlikely

forest edge
#

@strange cragmaybe years ago that was the case but anymore just no

#

linux has it's uses, both side pretty much established thier place in the world

strange crag
#

you apparently NEED tpm2.0 to install win11

forest edge
#

which hurts ms more than hurts linux lol

umbral cliff
clear ferry
strange crag
#

havent tried it yet

umbral cliff
#

I dual boot manjaro and windows 11 with no issues

forest edge
#

I still remember when pc games came with support for both

#

on the box

clear ferry
#

Also, all computers the last 8 years have had TPM2.0 that I have owned, so that isn't really a problem

#

It's not a new hardware feature, and it doesn't really make sense to run Win11 on a 10yo laptop

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

i like how you say, "you" owned so it isn't an issue lol

clear ferry
#

I have no other reference points since I don't work with consumer bullshit 😄

forest edge
#

noone cares about your HP garbage atx!

strange crag
#

do you have the release version of win11 or the other one? Calmelb?

clear ferry
#

I ran beta for a month before win11 was released

strange crag
#

OK I heard that the other one would work without tpm2.0 but the release version wouldnt

umbral cliff
#

I wiped and installed win 11 fresh as my win 10 install was getting a little bad

forest edge
#

so is there more linux in win11 like they kept hinting at?

umbral cliff
#

There’s no issues about it existing, as atx pointed out linux has supported it for years

strange crag
#

is tpm enabled?

umbral cliff
#

Has to be

strange crag
#

in bios

umbral cliff
#

So yes it’s enabled

strange crag
#

sorry you were too quick to respond before I got the second line in lol

umbral cliff
umbral cliff
strange crag
#

well thats an improvement 😉

clear ferry
#

I love that powershell now recognizes grep

umbral cliff
#

They do actually like Linux once balmer left

clear ferry
#

Select-String PU_PepeDerp

umbral cliff
#

Since even azure (their cloud suite) offers Linux as VM OS

#

Or for servers, etc

#

So it’s no longer the closed book they once were

forest edge
#

I wonder if I should upgrade to 11

clear ferry
#

11 is great tbh

forest edge
#

I see the option in the update window

umbral cliff
#

If you have backups then go ahead

#

I’ve only known one person to have issues

#

And even then it was a broken program install that barely worked on 10, 11 y sealed the deal

#

*just

forest edge
#

not sure about that desktop look tho

umbral cliff
strange crag
#

does win11 recognise any other filesystems than ntfs or fat?

umbral cliff
#

And even then you can move it to the left

umbral cliff
strange crag
#

did it try to take the whole disk or ignore the other o/s on your hdd?

#

for dual booting I always had to install windows first and then linux so that I would be able to choose which o/s I wanted. If I did it the other way around linux couldnt be accessed

forest edge
#

would be a nightmare if ms had the ability to utilize like ext lol

clear ferry
#

I haven't dualbooted since 2010, makes no sense with modern virtualization tech

strange crag
clear ferry
#

Because macOS is bsd yes

forest edge
#

there would certainly be some kind of screw up between the two so taking a drive from one to the other would cause issues

strange crag
clear ferry
#

had to check, but bsd has supported ext in kernel since 1997

#

there is no "issue with sound" in a virtualized enviroment, heck even 3d acceleration works fine

strange crag
clear ferry
#

these aren't third parties, they are open source communities

#

that have supported it for decades

forest edge
#

pretty sure apple wasn't a smooth thing in the begining if i remember right

clear ferry
#

there is no sense for ms to support ext natively

dusky plank

that CURL in powersehll though 🤮🤢🤮🤢🤮🤮🤮🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮

for realz

clear ferry
#

agreed

dusky plank
#

how can you fuck it up that bad?

strange crag
forest edge

and thats why many don't want ms to support ext lol

a few years ago is decades in advances

Hyper-V 🤢

#

Reminds me, having a meeting about a customer today with a shitty hyper-v environment

strange crag
#

not hyper-v! Dont use windows for servers if I can avoid it. Was a linux proxmox and vmware servers. Both failed that test.

forest edge
#

dunno how people can swap between OS's all the time. I get "part of the job" parts but not for personal reasons

strange crag
clear ferry
#

proxmox 🤢

#

I have run full 3d acceleration with CAD developers on vmware for over 10 years

#

it isn't an issue

dusky plank
#

i have accellerated graphics, nice audio and also passthrough without trouble in kvm
on a single nuc I can run linux, osx and windows parallell all with their own gpu and sound output

forest edge
#

I have my window machines then I have my linux machines.. just as God intended

strange crag
#

proxmox was great even back then, apparently its even better now!

clear ferry

@forest edge what do you mean, I only work on roughly 25 different OS'

forest edge
#

thats cause your a freak who eats shitty cheese

clear ferry
strange crag
dusky plank
clear ferry

I ran a windows vm on linux 6 years ago with audio + 3d acceleration without issues

it isn't that recent

dusky plank

^^

#

wasn't even recent in 2012 with bootcam afaik (running the bootcam partition in vmware player on osx)

forest edge
#

the issue was trying to run wine on linux through vm lol

clear ferry
#

wine is an abomination

#

I actually ran WoW on Wine for years though, it worked fine

forest edge
#

it was a linux junkies only hope for gaming

strange crag
#

until some good games came out on linux

forest edge
#

wow did not work fine the whole time lol

strange crag
#

and steam joined the party

forest edge

hell wow didn't always work all that great even when the instance wasn't in a vm let alone through a vm lol

so do not miss that $15/m addiction

dusky plank

no online audio service features all what I'm looking for in one place

its all scattered

clear ferry

I do agree on this

dusky plank

and when they feature a majority of artists - they still dont have mixes

clear ferry

Spotify is the best for compatibility though, native spotify player in my car f.example

prime latch

Lol Spotify

dusky plank
#

what

clear ferry
#

what

prime latch
#

Spotify audio quality is just horrendous

clear ferry
#

doesn't matter for most folks as they listen on shitty hardware anyway 😄

prime latch
#

It's still worse than CD

clear ferry
#

helps to put it to extreme quality though, although the hifi one will be better

prime latch
#

The bare minimum in 2021 should be CD quality

#

And nice would be mastered songs

clear ferry

Spotify HiFi will introduce that

#

but doesn't help much when most modern music is mixed in down in shitty quality

prime latch

eh I have apple music 🤫

dusky plank

because apple is stupid and I get free months for every hackintosh i make

clear ferry

wooooo

prime latch
#

The only product they make that actually makes sense in my opinion is the iPad because Android tablets are garbage

clear ferry
#

🤢

prime latch

Android tablets really need to pick up the game and developers actually need to notice there a thing

clear ferry
#

Atleast my android tablet can install updates without me uninstalling every application I ever installed on it to make room for the upgrade

#

(yes I have an ipad too)

prime latch
#

What

#

My iPad air 4 never done that

clear ferry

that is because you overspent and bought the one that comes with usable storagespace

what is it with you down under people flocking into this server?

prime latch

I'm boycotting Samsung, so no

prime latch

So what new tablet do you buy

clear ferry
#

Lenovo tablets are insanely cheap, I have three

prime latch

Samsung the only premium manufacturer left really

prime latch
clear ferry

I don't care about premium bullshit

#

I leave that to the kids

dusky plank

a man of culture

prime latch

dusky plank

lol, my nexus 7 from 2012 runs recent ubuntu

prime latch
#

It just seems like an android tablet thing to have bad software support

clear ferry
#

Good thing I have the P11 tablet then

prime latch
#

So it's going to get updates for two years

clear ferry
#

Also, unlike apple, you don't get banned from installing older software on older tablets

prime latch
#

You could do more than 2 years but

#

The minimum really should be 3 years of software

clear ferry
#

Says the guy with a 17yo switch that was EOL'd 5 years ago 😄

prime latch

It's not 17 years old it has a manufacturing date on

#

It's 2007 so it's 13

#

Nearly 14 it was manufactured in December

clear ferry

The hardware inside it is still 17yo, whenever it was assembled doesn't matter

prime latch
#

No the hardware inside was manufactured around that date

clear ferry
prime latch
#

So you think for the switches they made in 2016 they were using hardware from 2004 they had lying around

dusky plank

🍿

clear ferry

Probably yes, in refurbished or reproduced PCBs

I didn't say that

They must have some crazy time travelling abilities to know how many to make

#

It can't be 2004 hardware if it wasn't manufactured in 2004

clear ferry
#

Sure it can

prime latch
#

No it would be 2015 hardware that's why it's got that manufacturing date on

clear ferry
#

They made 50k boards, those were used in the first 3 years, hardware is still produced in 2004 even though it was assembled in 2007

#

etc

#

then they made 50k more

#

and 100k more

#

etc

#

it's very likely the first three or four years were all produced at the same time

prime latch
#

I would be quite surprised if December 2007 was using boards that were made in 2004

#

Have a couple mates that worked in Cisco at the time and they were selling pretty well

clear ferry
#

It isn't very unusual

prime latch
#

2006 2005 years but not 2007

#

I've owned the switch since day 1 brought it in early 2008 I've got a open up again and see if I can see some more date markings

clear ferry
#

You will probably find date markings on the PSU, the system board and any ASIC daughter boards yes

prime latch
#

I've only had to replace the power supplied once quite surprising that model had quite a bit of issues

#

And that was quite new so it was under warranty

#

It's just poe switch for my IP cameras most of them have been moved on to a new switch now but in a different location

#

Most of my stuff these days is on my 48 Port Linksys switch

clear ferry
#

Linksys 🤢

prime latch
#

Yes it's just Cisco

clear ferry
#

it isn't

prime latch
#

They literally had a partnership it's on cisco's website

clear ferry
#

sure, they did

#

linksys didn't run catos or ios though

#

nor nxos or aci for that matter

prime latch
#

They did have a partnership

clear ferry
#

that is like saying a Seat is a Bugatti

#

it isn't

prime latch
clear ferry
prime latch
#

clear ferry
#

Sure, it still isn't a Cisco

prime latch
#

dusky plank

clear ferry
