wow the process to add in custom svg icons in ha is a pain lol
life is a pain
yes, hence why i keep my oleds on a lower brightness value and try to avoid pure blacks
i would like my body not to be broken when i turn 50
Don't worry, won't be getting anywhere near as big as your head.

fellow citizens send link to obvious fake news
me: this is wrong
them: but it shows https:// !!
https://fakene.ws
did you place a <name of person is dumb.html> site which contains exactly what the name suggests on a server real quick?

also, if you need a dumb domain for this kind astuff, I own https://suspiciouslinkfrommisachiever.com for very related reasons
I should buy https://www.hurensohn.de to @dusky plank for Christmas
it's not available 😔
I already tried
proper single german word in the .de space is almost entirely reserved
I should just get https://www.klootzak.nl then
just get .eu
i have .tirol
meh. .bayern domains are 50€/year 😦
Sadly I can't get fub.ar
Just get oldfa.rt
Sigh. Was planning to go to the LA Auto Show today, but wanted to see BMW and they're a no-show
is sna.fu available? 🤔
went to the Charlotte Auto Show and almost none of the new cool things were there
wai.fu
mainly because the cars were provided by local dealers and they didn't even have them
there's nothing for me in LA this year
got to test drive a 2-door bronco though, so that was fun
yeah, I think I'm going to wait until next year to look seriously
also scubi brought some prototypes. they had a BRZ and a WRX there
some of the BMWs are shipping new without touchscreens due to part availability
Still waiting for a factory supercharged / turbocharged GT86/BRZ...
it'll never happen
They just keep adding 5 horsepower every hear. lol
but at least they fixed the torque dip in this gen
I mean, the torque dip was always fixable: Swap from an exhaust manifold to headers
That's what I did to my 2013 GT86 🤷♀️
nice
I have an Audi S5 now, but didn't really like their new stuff and haven't paid much attention this year
Eh, the 5 series is boring, old man cars
i'm interested in the 2023 Taco and Ranger
The FA20 doesn't seem to like exhaust backpressure at low RPM, so a better exhaust helps a ton.
wanted to see the new GTI/R but they didn't have any
was initially looking at an M4 coupe, but that i4...

got to test drive a single motor Polestar 2, that was fun
Side note: Finding CARB legal headers for the GT86 was a bitch
But I really didn't want to have to take them off for smog every year, so... worth it
I had a polestar 2 a few weeks ago, shitty drive quality and cramped cockpit imo
didn't feel too bad but i was in it for maybe 20m tops
That's really concept-y. I wonder what'll survive to production
Very
i did like the polestar2 interior and layout better than the Model3 so there's that at least
Anything beats a Tesla in both interior and drive comfort
That is the stupidest center console I've ever seen
Tbh, the id3 was an upgrade from the polestar 2
Why is there a flowerpot built into the car?
i wouldn't pay 60k for it
If I replaced my V70 i would probably do a id3 or id4, the XC90 covers most of my large car needs now
i'm interested in the Korean companies versions
The Kia electric with 800v charging is interesting
0-100% in 28 minutes
If I would buy a full size electric I would probably still buy the byd tang or the hongqi e-hs9
the honky e-hisss-nine?
I can hear the Louisiana accent already
we don't have either of those companies here
We have all the Chinese ones here
Since they build better EVs than the US, all my colleagues with tesla that have changed to newer Tesla that are built in China say the quality upgrade is very noticeable
of course you have all the chinese ones. You got volvo D:
oh, i forgot the KTM xbow
imagine a whole country subsidizing Musk and China 😬
EVs are tax free in Norway while regular cars pay easily 100% in tax and in many cases a lot more
Yes, the car tax is pretty bonkers
I bought a Audi A8 used for €5k in 2015, if I was to import a better one from Germany, I would pay €3k for it in Germany and €15k in import tax
Haha, I don't think it's quite that crazy around here, but still pretty high
When will they all be self driving cars?
all? probably 2200
Probably 2035-40
all. around the world.

eehhh i will move to wpa3 now
wonder what devices might fall off
anybody here use 802.11r Fast Transition ?
classic iot, roborock doesnt like it
my recollection from Unifi is that it doesn't really speed up transitions
and has compatibility issues like you're seeing
The old m4 is just amazing
That is why it is faster
Only 5% of products work on it
It can't be slower 🤣
i resorted to a wpa2/3 mixed ssid for the netatmo and roborock, take that super long komplex password you stupid devices!
Wait, you lot are protecting your wireless networks?
Yeah, I wrapped the AP in tinfoil to keep the hackers out
Tinkerer was faster
I see 2342934 ssids in my area, I expect one of these tools to hash my pw if its too weak, so yes
usb coral ordered 🥳
Voraussichtlich ab 17.1.2022 verfügbar. 😢
go to ebay and buy one for triple the price if you want it now
Well sure, but I wouldn't necessarily trust they'll get them by that date either
i can only hope, yes, but they are serious and i believe the only place rn where you can even place a order
yeah I tried to look some time ago as well and just nothing anywhere
the m.2 models were available but don't have a slot for those
I got 2342934 ssids but a bitch ain't one
I have a spare coral in my drawer if anybody wants it
usb?
M2
This one
neeed usb

Hey, did you find out @clever mortar side business
||I sell souls... I have a fine collection of them||
just get the m.2 version and a m.2 adapter
Are there USB m.2 adapters that would work?
havent heard anything for that adapter specifically, but i think those for m.2 nvme ssds might work
The ones for WiFi would be more likely given the keying
I use my M2 in a pcie adapter
But the keying on the dual one needs a slot that supports bifurcation
Unfair posting a gif of @forest edge at this hour

Hi, I'm interested in building my own home automation with as many open source services/apis or scripts I can write myself. I am new to home automation, but I am a young software developer and currently do a lot with Docker, Kubernetes, Java, Python etc. I was wondering what home assistant installation people recommend if I want to be very flexible with my own services deployed on my own server in a Kubernetes cluster? Could home assistant perhaps also be deployed on Kubernetes so that it is easier to access those other self-written services?
Alright. Are there any limitations I need to be aware of?
you run in unsupported territory witk k8s
So maybe a better solution to run #449717345808547842 on a Raspberry Pi and access those own services on my server in the Kubernetes cluster from the Raspberry Pi?
thats what i do yes
Damn I missed the car talk
Does anyone know of a good easy way to remove rust from aluminium chemically
The gas cooking elements have got all brown where they were in contact with the cast iron cover plates
Way too many surfaces to clean it mechanically
Coke. The brown liquid. Not the white powder. Soak overnight.
get you some evapo-rust if you can. that stuff works wonders
it's no toxic so can be used for anything
Dessert topping?
non toxic dosen't mean ingestion. it's like CLR. just make sure you throughly rinse before sticking it in your mouth lol
CLR is pretty good, too
Oh wow that’s a lot of snow
The most snow I’ve seen in australia (excluding the mountains) is a light flurry that fell in 2019 in Canberra
Record in my hometown was 1997
That say 2.4m of snow?
yes
Had to excavate my sister from the basement apartment every morning for a few months
Thank god for the Scandi mountains. You can keep all that snow
it is quite nice
(Also funny reading the manual for my bmw and it talking about winter stuff, then having the Australian supplemental document say it’s not relevant lol)
Do you guys in Europe have winter/ summer tyres like in the USA?
In scandinavia we have studded tires
same here
Australia we have all year tyres so have no clue what is done overseas tbh
I visit the audi test area every winter, lots of drifting fun
If you go to the mountains you are required to have 4WD or chains on your tyres or both
But otherwise swapping tyres isn’t a thing here
we have them on 6 months a year
Is it harder to drive on snow?
it's easier to make mistakes, by a lot
It's like driving a bike
Like skidding/ sliding?
yes
you go 1 speed unit above whats reasonable, you run into big trouble
if you don't know how to handle it you can easily crash your car and take others with you
I wasn’t even born in 97 😂😅
99 was also not bad
I can't find my folder now with all the 90's pictures but I remember there was a pretty impressive year for Greek snow standards
Not sure where to post it, but I'm brand new to home automation, looking to start getting hardware, and know I want to use Home Assistant
Where's a good resource or chat location to figure out what sort of switches to get?
#hardware-archived , and please respond to the questions in the pinned message there
can you ship some of that snow to me?
Hakka 8?
They are real good
I put Michelins on the Volvo though :)
Those are amazing a lot less road noise, many small spikes
And good grip even in the dry
Oh yepp
Good thing you make more in a month than we all make together in a life time
🤣
Those are enormous
21 inch
My wheels could fit in your tryes
Yes they are fooking huge
Oh my lord
If you ever forget where you park, call Nasa
They can see those wheels from space
Hoping to be able to get my new car integrated when it arrives
In 2023 you say
Revenge!
so do norwats eat the goat that provides the brown cheese for thanksgiving?
No, we don't need to celebrate slaughtering of natives as we've just stayed here the whole time
Except that time we went to @clever mortar to grab females and returned home
he means they took your sheep
It's fine, we'll steal them back again.
I mean, come on, the Romans built a wall to stop us doing that, and it didn't really change anything
There was a pub when I lived in Dublin called "The Sheepshagger"
Wonder if it is still there
doubtful i read interpol really started cracking down on sex traffiking

If the magnesium shortage is to be believed then maybe
Yay car in for service, let’s see how much it’ll cost me 😂
Let me tell you about when the local importer wanted $5000 to do a regular service plus water pump on my 16 year old audi A8L @umbral cliff
Drove to Sweden and got it done for $1000
Jesus…. Was that a golden water pump?
The Audi importer in Norway is... Known to overcharge
Ah that makes sense… not good sense but understandable why they charge so much
I’ve got to look after my 3 series bmw that’s 21 years old
Great car
Just…. Pricy…
Only BMW's I have ever wanted were a 70s 6series, a 80/90s 7 series or a X7
I've driven a few 3s and 5s, but they were all shite
The 8 was ok, but not for me
The E46 (2000-2004) is a nice 3 series. Safe and mostly modern but has the old school charm that’s missing nowadays
Just bmw made stupid decisions in some areas
Cheap plastic cooling parts mean coolant leaks at least every 4 months
All the 4cyl 90s ones were rubbish
Yeah I only own the 318 so baby 1.9L engine. Still feels nicer than my friends Mazda which is newer and larger engine 😂
And tbh as a first car is perfect
I haven't had a chance to properly road test my XC90 yet, haven't even needed to use kickdown for passby yet
407bhp are nice, with both supercharged and turbo
No lag
Ah that’s nice. Like 4x the horsepower 😂
Though given how strict they are on speeding here I don’t really need it
Get caught by unmarked cameras going 63 in a 60 zone? $100 fine and 1 demerit
We have a lot of mountains, doing drive by uphill can be challenging
(Kmh that is)
Ah yeah that I can imagine
But yeah I plan to keep my car for years, she’s only done 82,000kms so plenty left
The idea behind the ski jump spot took shape in 1986 at the BBDO advertising agency in Düsseldorf, Germany. When tested on a glacier in the Tyrol, an Audi 100 quattro proved capable of climbing a 39-degree gradient. The ski jump that was eventually found in Kaipola, Finland, had a slope angle of 37.5 degrees – or to put it another way, a gradien...
I used to do 40k km a year before, now I try to stay below 20k
I do between 5-10k a year
Don’t usually need to drive outside of my city so no long distances there
Gonna drive to Canberra early December, easy 1400km round trip
I cover most of eastern Norway by car, rest of Norway by plane
Western Sweden by car and rest of Scandinavia by plane
That all for your job?
Yes
That’s a lot of driving
Yes, these days it is mostly home office though
Which will be even more of if I move to an EU role
Was that due to covid or just slowly moving up?
Mostly due to COVID
Norwegian customers do prefer remote work now
Frankly most of Europe does
Yes, not like the weirdos in the US forcing people back into the office
Apple Maps keeps rerouting. Bad decision on my part to do a site visit on the day before turkey day. 🤣
Oh is it thanksgiving tomorrow for the usa
So that involve the usual holiday traffic I presume 😂
I swear people forget how to drive on holidays
I think volume increases also.
Nothankyoutaking
Apple Maps can’t make up its mind 🤣
Though at least from what I’ve seen, tradie (tradesmen) are the worst at driving. The other day one cut onto a busy freeway only to force themselves into the right lane nearly hitting 2 cars
All whilst we were going 20-30kmh
The classic traffic is so bad any way you go will be terrible
Put it on the Barbie
Fun fact for you @umbral cliff
I was "married" to an Australian girl in 1997
I was at a children's camp in new Zealand
With kids from around the world
a cult camp?
was a sheep herding camp
Does this lead to pedophilia?

This conversation took a turn 😂
Visiting Australia is at the top of my bucket list
How did you end up in New Zealand
I signed up for the kids camp
Where in australia did you want to visit? Or just everywhere
Lived in NZ for a month with 100+ other kids
No idea. Prob anywhere
i wanna go to Australia too
Wanna take me as your date?
No, most have been earlier come think of it, I was 11, so 1995
Just plane hours were 28 I think, plus layovers
sure, need someone to push onto the poisonous snakes so i can get away
Well east cost is easy to drive in about a week or two stopping off constantly on the way
West coast you’ll want to fly there because there’s Perth and mines and desert
Don’t worry. Some of the poisonous snakes will chase after you anyway
some of the desert ones do, not sure if they have those there or not
I am not sure how we survived without GPS. Really no idea where I am. Just following the phone 🤣
my girl can't go anywhere without needing to use google maps. even places she's been a hundred times before. if it's not to work and back and farther than 5 mins away she cannot seem to remember how to get there lol
Imagine having to memorise the route from a map beforehand
Yes. GPS has not made us smarter fer sure
And the ‘oh shit, was that a left or a right?’
Crack’n me up how hard it trying to get me around traffic and every turn is more parking lots
It’s cool that the apps can now navigate within a parking lot
and when every vehicle auto drives itself noone will know how to even leave thier own sub divisions manually
I really hope that’s a long way away. I wouldnt trust an autonomous car.
What about the semi autonomous like we currently have?
Personally I’m not a fan of even adaptive cruise control, because it makes people lazy
try taking a trip that involves driving for 8+ hours without cruise control
Oh cruise control itself I like
Because yes it’s useful
It’s the adaptive cruise I don’t like
Because controlling your space between a vehicle in front means you’re concentrating
I kind of like it, it just makes sure you don't always have to toggle it on and off when alittle traffic builds up
our forester will even come to a complete stop. you could in essence cruise control through city streets lol
I guess 8 hour road trips in australia are a lot easier than elsewhere. Get out of the city and you’ve got 7 hours of empty freeway
it's not about easy, it's about your leg or foot cramping etc
rather than having to stop a lot to "stretch" you can continue to drive a whole lot further with your feet off the pedals
I like the advancement of tech in cars, adds extra layers of saftey but what I don't like is that tech kind of adds a hard expiration date to vehicles
a person should really only ever own 2-3 cars within a lifetime, excluding accidents etc but now with all the tech and that shit always fails after the first couple of decades and being so expensive that buying a new car ultimatly cheaper than fixing
it's just bs
Yeah that’s what I mean by freeway in aus, I can use normal cruise at 110 and there’s no one who will be in front of me
Yeah but if you want to really spend some time you can fix that stuff up (usually not terribly hard) and is fun to do
Wow that’s quite cool
There was also this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KliWHCzE16c
that cassette nav is kind of ingenious
although with no ability to tell if you had turned right or left or missed the turn all together i could see it being annoying from that point forth lol
The classic “make a u turn when able” except it just keeps navigating you along 😂
There's plenty of traffic on the open roads between major towns and cities in Australia. Not so much elsewhere though.
For those of you who are coming to Australia there's the 20 out of the worlds deadliest 25 snakes, plus quite a few of the deadliest spiders, plus crocodiles and jellyfish and meat ants. But hey it's a fantastic place to be. 😀 oh and don't forget the mythical bunyip and drop bears. 🤣.
I’m thinking a 8 hour roadtrip between Melbourne and Canberra. Traffic in Melbourne but fuck all on the Hume 😂
Not enough to worry about adaptive cruise
Don’t forget the blue ring octopus too
Just to top it off
The Hume highway has lots of traffic, the worst times are Fridays and Sundays and public holidays when everyone leaves the city. It's like city traffic bumper to bumper too close together at highway speeds!
I’ve not actually seen traffic on the Hume. Usually have gone on Feb and November usually early in the week
Maybe I’m lucky e 😂
*then
There's also the sea urchin, stone fish and sea snake and sharks etc, but the post was getting a bit long.
Thought the hume was just constantly deserted
Rename australia to just deadly land
I have seen the Hume as a parking lot when there has been an accident or there was a special event like an air show.
Thousands of cars stopped or barely moving
However I haven't been near the place in years and I guess the covid lockdowns will have stopped people travelling.
As for snow well we do have it on tops of a few mountains and it has snowed once or twice in some towns and we have even had snow on Uluru!
Yeah that’s true. Think I’ve seen it like that on the other side one time. I’ve just been quite lucky then 😂
I guess so lol
We are a country of people that likes to travel
So there's always traffic everywhere
Well unless you’re from WA who seem happy with the border closures 😂
I left before winter set in. May not be as cold as some places on this planet but it's too cold for me.
Look that’s fair. Definitely avoid Canberra during winter then. Easily gets below 0 overnight
any tricks to get solider to stick to a surface pad?
Flux
have non, so fuck this project tonight
smart bulbs should have hour meters
that way you know exactly how long they have been on
Flux is generally part of solder. Maybe your iron isnt hot enuff or there is some crap on the pad?
not all solder has the rosin core
it's been semi decent here for the past couple of days, like upper 50's and 60's. and tomorrow the high will be like 35 and then on friday it goes back to like 50's and 60's lol
stupid midwest weather
Well then get some solder that has the flux in it! You already need 3 hands to solder dont make it a fourth! lol
If solder isn't wetting a pad easily you can't brute force it
Flux, and the right amount of heat delivered in the right place
why the hell did i just add a hover effect to the buttons on my dashboard I never look
Do NOT tag @everyone @midnight adder - that's a quick way of getting banned
Did you think it was smart to ping 81 thousand people?
Well, yes, that's kind of how these things work
Many servers have more than that
Pinging everybody is ... pretty sodding stupid
Thankfully that's blocked here, so you didn't actually ... but you could have
A little thought goes a long way
Next time you join a server, think of it as a thing not to do
i wonder, maybe there is a reason to it 🤔
Nah, it's totally fine to be ignoring class
I love adaptive cruise control, best regard someone who can spend 2-4h in queues per day
Yeah that’s fair then
I’ll give you that
Features are great
The new Pilot Assist on the XC90 is great
Give me all the non shit features
It can drive in queues for me
I just know a few who use it everywhere because lazy driving
Why is it lazy though
Like lazy because they don’t want to have to concentrate
So they just use adaptive cruise and not concentrate on the road
I think it offloads non value adding activity to a machine
And allows you to save mental fatigue
Well, adaptive cruise does a lot more than that, if someone suddenly breaks (even if you aren't activly using it) your car will break, and if a car comes towards you in the same lane it will also break, regardless of if you are using ACC or not
It's like when helicopters first came out
Yeah I agree with emergency break. You can have that without adaptive cruise though
They used to require intense manual correction just to hover in place, let alone cruise
Makes no sense to have radar without having ACC
Pilots got extremely tired very quickly
I'd rather have billions people using ACC than not
What really grinds my gears is that people with modern cars have noe idea HOW TO FUCKING USE THE PARKING LIGHTS
Especially in winter Norway
In australia we have 0 use for parking lights so most here (including myself) really have no clue when to use them 😂
In Northern norway we have 2 months without sunlight
In the south the sun is just low
What I love here though is people drive with fog lights on 24/7 then as soon as it’s foggy they turn them off
Driving with fog lights is legal in norway, if it is at daytime, and you turn your regular headlights off
if you drive with both on or with fog lights in the evening it's fines
Here fog lights can’t be on without headlights on
Why wouldn’t you just run normal headlights on during that period anyway
your fog lights are unproperly aimed then
Even when correctly aimed they're a nightmare in the rain

That's a function of how they're designed to work ... in fog
never had issues but then I drive a truck
Remember about 15 years ago I was doing a commute from Tromsø to Narvik, and the snow was so heavy the only way I actually saw the road was driving with parking lights on, that was... fun
only time i ever had issues was driving through kansas in the middle of the night on a country road during a really bad hail storm
the hail was like the size of marbles and that made seeing anything impossible lol
I've been out in fog that was heavy enough that you couldn't see the road directly in front of the car, no matter what you did with lights. That was pretty damn scary
I've also been out in rain heavy enough that you could see more than a couple of meters in front of the car. That's damn scary when you were doing 60 MPH along twisty country roads and that starts...
yellow vs white fog lights make a difference too so I hear. never had a vehicle with actual yellow fog lights to test that out tho
My previous neighbour drove his Peugeot with both yellow fog and headlights
yea some vehicles have them yellow
aftermarket is common to be yellow too
especially for 4x4'ers
yea i don't know why they are so random. maybe they are worse for oncoming traffic or something
By truck you mean a Ute? Like car with trailer bed?
Could you not use low beam headlights in that situation?
If I can't see more than five meters or so I usually stop by the roadside and wait it out. Don't want to get hit from behind.
You mean this? (Had to google it)
thats what I thought you meant lol
Yeah no matter how safe you are, the other drivers cannot be guaranteed
Exactly. Always assume everyone else on the road is a complete idiot and you'll be safer.
Oh I meant is your car something like this?
... and not far off...
Even then it’s still easy for idiots to cause damage even if you try your best
yes, that is a truck, not a car
On a highway was going 80kmh and a taxi decides he’s going to merge into the right hand lane where I am. Nearly pushed me off the road
are you sure about that?
To me that’s a ute 😂
Pretty sure it’s part of the ADRs
I guess "truck" over there is more like semi lol https://www.topmarkfunding.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/what-is-a-semi-truck-1024x576-1024x585.jpg
but fog happens at all times - so should be allowed.
Yep 😂
we call cars, cars, trucks trucks and semi's semi's or tractor trailers lol
I can count the incidents of fog the last 10 years on two hands probably
Whilst we call anything larger than a van a truck. And if it has multiple trailers then it’s a road train
So a "semitruck" is significantly larger than a truck?
to american's yes
not sure what ute is? you mean utv?
Ute is what you call a truck
Ah, English.
Never seen white fog lights - they are yellow because of less reflected glare from the fog. Being white would defeat the purpose!
99.9999% of fog lights are white
Our bmw has white fog lights (well halogen bulbs but clear housing and cover)
apparently not where he lives
@umbral cliffthis covers what we call what lol https://www.caranddriver.com/shopping-advice/g26100588/car-types/
Everything except this is the same. This is called a Ute for us
but a ute is built on a car chasis. Its just like having a convertible or sedan or coupe or a hearse!
ute is a weird name to my ears lol
stands for utility vehicle
Not here in Aus!
Ute is just such an Aussie word 😂
Most European cars in aus end up with clear fogs though
yeah we have SUV and 4x4 as well
/ white fogs
Australia doesn't count, you guys have the strangest rules in the world
lol
Like the fact we can’t run our own Ethernet cable if it goes through the walls? 😂
Exactly
wtf lol
Dates back to the days of copper phone lines. Where if you tried to do in home wiring you could cause damage
Nowadays it’s kinda useless
Also just took a photo of my parents bmw’s fog lights (had to go drive it anyway). See white/ clear!
well you can run your own cables, but if it causes a problem with the house burning down then insurance isnt going to cover it, but insureance always seeks to avoid paying anyway even if its not your fault
Also depends on the mood of acma if they ever get teeth and enforce that stuff
fog lights on cars seems silly to me
My insurance just got bumped from $300k to unlimited because I got accepted to the Norwegian Engineering Association, plus I got a lot of other nice perks
that was nice
fog light beams are blanket span. it's no wonder being that close to the ground people have issues
phone lines only had a max of 100v A/C on them when ringing. Normally at customer premises it was like 6v DC. If you were close to the exchange you might get some back emf from relays at a couple thousand volts, but stuff all current. I used to work in a crossbar exchange, got zapped a few times - still alive lol
It's not that high tbh
ours is like half that, just enough for people to tap into to charge thier phones during an outage lol
for experts on fog - anyone here from england? Apparently they have pea soup fogs
ask tinkerer, he stated he had to "swim" through some thick shit a few times lol
have measured the ring current both at the ringer and further out. Definitely 100 VAC
I thought ISDN maxed out at 80v or so
its not isdn
he's talking old classic telephone
aussies need the power in the pinch to do some on the site make shift welding lol
correct - pre electronic exchange, altho they still use some of that stuff too
norwegian guidelines say -48v default voltage, 90v when ringing here
@strange crag what voltage would nbn fttn be?
yeah 50v in the exchange for internal workings. love the size of the busbars!
Fibre shouldnt have any voltage - it just carries light.
The copper for fttn though
Would that still operate at 50v?
lol copper
probably would be 50v, but I dont know for sure
Modern internet 😛
Australia, little murica
FTTH or bust
Ftth = fttp
For australia it means fibre to the home or apartment. There’s no copper in sight for that
yeah australia was going to get fibre to the premises, but then the politicians got involved and it got commuted to fibre to the node (end of the street) and copper to the house. Now they want to go the rest of the way and are finding out that for the last short distance its going to be just has expensive as the original full rollout. What idiots!
I would call premise a shared building, like an office building or apartment building
while a house is a single family location
well we are talking about to the house in this case calmelb was correct
a business can have many lines in
All to be different from labor and also to protect Foxtel. Such a mess
UK uses the term FTTP for "to the dwelling unit" - house/flat/whatever
yes for apartments/flats would only be one cable
Whilst apartments here who are under FTTP have individual fibre into the place
That would be different then, the FTTP stuff here is one fiber to the complex, then distributed via patch panels \ switches to apartments afaik
It only happens in large cities where it isn't feasible to do a full new install, FTTH has been the norm since 2004\5
Yeah unsure if it’s multiple fibre to each apartment or one to the block then fibre split out to each apartment but regardless it’s still fibre to each apartment
Whilst we planned to put fibre to every home retrofitted since 2012 or so then it changed to the mixed mess
At least my parents place has HFC so it’s probably the best non FTTP place
(Since we can get gigabit down if we wanted)
hahaha
Also max 25GB transfer per month!
only 25GB? that sux
Yeah at least all plans here can do unlimited data 😂
Even if you end up with 12/2 on a pensioner plan
even if they slow it down after a certain amounmt!
Limited data, lol what a dystopian pipedream
Think even telstra got rid of data caps for fixed line in 2014 or so
And they’re usually the ones to rip you off
they still ripyou off - lowest data caps in the country
For mobile data? Yeah but if you need the coverage you’re stuck with them
for their unlimited plans you still get restricted at about 40Gig
Since when?
I’ve put 1TB over one of those and no issues
It’s proper unlimited for fixed line
its called their fair use policy
Never had any issues from it before
maybe not, but the clause is still there
Yeah it’s probably one of the few ones that are never enforced though
it was early on -= not sure now though since others now have unlimited
Just looked at their policy, just says high usage of domestic service with no data cap will not be enforced under their fair use
man my next house will have a digital temp shower control
fair enuff then. Things have finally changed!
Yeah they would’ve been forced to. Given everyone else is unlimited
The TOS just seem to be the usual no business on domestic connection
Can run a business, but dont expect to get Telstra stuff done quickly! Hell I was running a business service with them and moved premises and they gave me a domestic service with port 25 blocked and I was running a mail server. I moved a couple of streets so the data port was available, but they wouldnt move it from the old location to the new one.
hehehe
dont knock it till you try it!
I’m happy to pay for someone to host my email
The only customers I still have with local mail servers are military, everyone else has common sense
hehehe yeah military inteligence is an oxymoron lol
most companies have their own
Sounds like murica
hell the shitty retail store i worked at eons ago had it's own lol
eternal mail servers for "security"
I remember when I worked at Gateway and accidently sent something to a friend of mine then had my manager tell me to not do that the next day was both funny and scary
bastards reading our work given mail.
That definitively sounds like murica
surprised your not forced to use an eternal service
I have no idea what that is
Yeah, no, even the norwegian goverment moved to cloud mail now that they didn't manage to keep their servers patched for 0day vulnerabilities
I mean I guess for such a small country that isn't a big deal but holy hell the security issues with that lol
Cloud mail servers > local mail servers
I mean.. no..
I mean yes
Eh, depends on where you move it to. If you're using Uncle Tom's cloud hosting sure you have an issue. If you're moving to one of the big players... they're probably better at security than your local IT idiots
maybe if it was hosted out of your grandma's basement...
MS patches their mailservers continiously
they even have the patches before they are publicly released
And if you send sensitive \ confidential information over mail, then you are the problem, not the mailsystem
it's really no diffrent than how we feel about local vs cloud control on our iot stuff lol
Don’t forget MS also has decent setups in place for government servers too which is a bonus
All comes down to the quality and experience of the various teams, but I know I'm more comfortable letting big player host my email than DIY
Exactly, the servers can be VPNed into the corp network so only outgoing mail actually traverses the internet @umbral cliff
The uni I was at is technically a government entity so we have O365 but with the strict rules (local servers, etc) due to it being under gov data rules
really only small companies and citizens use cloud here. sure there are some exceptions, some bigger companies may use something like MS or even some gov branches in some states or something but for the most part everyone hosts thier own and prefer it that way
I would too in the US where my data isn't really protected in any way from anyone
outbound is all in the same basket
Early on MS was running unix servers as their interface to the internet. When that fact was discovered MS turned off the service that showed that. To this day they may still be running unix servers or they may have changed them to linux boxes lol
it's the internal aspect they like, the features and control
I don't think MS ever had issues with linux
mostly the other way around lol
How does HA invoke its messaging to alert the user?
is there a way to get a count of the number of times an entity value has been below a threshold for a specific date period?
im trying to get a total number of times my grid voltage has been 'out of spec' this month

MS wanted linux removed from existance as it was competing with MS and was free. They still dont like it - just look at TPM2.0 - designed to stop linux being installed on the computer. It will only be a temporary stopgap, but still....
On another note they have an Ubuntu app on win10 and may actually be using some linux code in the development of windows.
MS has pushed Linux a lot more than they used to. Like the usage of WSL in windows. So you can run a full Linux shell or gui programs in windows natively. Definitely not the sign of a company that still hates it
I doubt TPM will be used to lock desktops down to prevent a new os at the very least, even laptops would be unlikely
@strange cragmaybe years ago that was the case but anymore just no
linux has it's uses, both side pretty much established thier place in the world
you apparently NEED tpm2.0 to install win11
which hurts ms more than hurts linux lol
You do. It doesn’t prevent the usage of dual booting Linux though
but... TPM2.0 works fine with Linux \ Vmware and more
havent tried it yet
I dual boot manjaro and windows 11 with no issues
Also, all computers the last 8 years have had TPM2.0 that I have owned, so that isn't really a problem
It's not a new hardware feature, and it doesn't really make sense to run Win11 on a 10yo laptop
Or the cpu has access for virtual TPM too
i like how you say, "you" owned so it isn't an issue lol
I have no other reference points since I don't work with consumer bullshit 😄
noone cares about your HP garbage atx!
do you have the release version of win11 or the other one? Calmelb?
Release
I ran beta for a month before win11 was released
OK I heard that the other one would work without tpm2.0 but the release version wouldnt
I wiped and installed win 11 fresh as my win 10 install was getting a little bad
so is there more linux in win11 like they kept hinting at?
I have TPM2.0, I still can run linux even with TPM2.0
There’s no issues about it existing, as atx pointed out linux has supported it for years
is tpm enabled?
Has to be
in bios
So yes it’s enabled
sorry you were too quick to respond before I got the second line in lol
Well powershell and cmd recognise all Linux commands for file browsing as well as windows ones (eg ls vs dir, rm vs del) so that’s one
But yeah tpm enabled, windows 11 install with bitlocker enabled, second drive running manjaro Linux perfectly fine on it
well thats an improvement 😉
I love that powershell now recognizes grep
They do actually like Linux once balmer left
Select-String
Since even azure (their cloud suite) offers Linux as VM OS
Or for servers, etc
So it’s no longer the closed book they once were
I wonder if I should upgrade to 11
11 is great tbh
I see the option in the update window
If you have backups then go ahead
I’ve only known one person to have issues
And even then it was a broken program install that barely worked on 10, 11 y sealed the deal
*just
not sure about that desktop look tho
It’s the same, only the start menu really
does win11 recognise any other filesystems than ntfs or fat?
And even then you can move it to the left
Don’t think so without any third party tool
did it try to take the whole disk or ignore the other o/s on your hdd?
for dual booting I always had to install windows first and then linux so that I would be able to choose which o/s I wanted. If I did it the other way around linux couldnt be accessed
would be a nightmare if ms had the ability to utilize like ext lol
I haven't dualbooted since 2010, makes no sense with modern virtualization tech
Why? Linux has that ability - even apple has that ability
Because macOS is bsd yes
there would certainly be some kind of screw up between the two so taking a drive from one to the other would cause issues
well dual booting gets around the issue of sound and other things not working very well in a VM environment. Not sure if that has been fixed. Also which way would you do it Windows host with other VM's or linux host with other vm's including windows?
had to check, but bsd has supported ext in kernel since 1997
there is no "issue with sound" in a virtualized enviroment, heck even 3d acceleration works fine
well how come third parties can do it, but not MS?
these aren't third parties, they are open source communities
that have supported it for decades
pretty sure apple wasn't a smooth thing in the begining if i remember right
there is no sense for ms to support ext natively
that CURL in powersehll though 🤮🤢🤮🤢🤮🤮🤮🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮
for realz
agreed
how can you fuck it up that bad?
last time I tried ( a few years back tho) the sound was all choppy and USB passthru wasnt great. 3d accel was there, but wouldnt work.
and thats why many don't want ms to support ext lol
a few years ago is decades in advances
sounds like hyper-v amirite?
Hyper-V 🤢
Reminds me, having a meeting about a customer today with a shitty hyper-v environment
not hyper-v! Dont use windows for servers if I can avoid it. Was a linux proxmox and vmware servers. Both failed that test.
dunno how people can swap between OS's all the time. I get "part of the job" parts but not for personal reasons
yeah too true!
proxmox 🤢
I have run full 3d acceleration with CAD developers on vmware for over 10 years
it isn't an issue
i have accellerated graphics, nice audio and also passthrough without trouble in kvm
on a single nuc I can run linux, osx and windows parallell all with their own gpu and sound output
I have my window machines then I have my linux machines.. just as God intended
proxmox was great even back then, apparently its even better now!
@forest edge what do you mean, I only work on roughly 25 different OS'
thats cause your a freak who eats shitty cheese
well all I can say is it must have improved quite a bit in the intervening time
I ran a windows vm on linux 6 years ago with audio + 3d acceleration without issues
it isn't that recent
^^
wasn't even recent in 2012 with bootcam afaik (running the bootcam partition in vmware player on osx)
the issue was trying to run wine on linux through vm lol
it was a linux junkies only hope for gaming
until some good games came out on linux
wow did not work fine the whole time lol
and steam joined the party
hell wow didn't always work all that great even when the instance wasn't in a vm let alone through a vm lol
so do not miss that $15/m addiction
opnsense > pfsense
Norwegians obviously have low standards
Can't fix layer8 issues, sorry
Tomato was a UX dream 💖
🤢
Pass, I'll rather do vyos then
What's wrong with tomato
isn't it still MIPS \ ARM only ?
Eh, I'm out of storage on my ESXi-lab
thank Dog I have 8 1.92TB SSDs laying around
gotta push them in
Yeah, I love 80s analogue synths
so perturbator is perfect
How can you not have spotify, only CD rips in ogg with local storage for you ? 😄
no online audio service features all what I'm looking for in one place
its all scattered
I do agree on this
and when they feature a majority of artists - they still dont have mixes
Spotify is the best for compatibility though, native spotify player in my car f.example
Lol Spotify
what
what
Spotify audio quality is just horrendous
doesn't matter for most folks as they listen on shitty hardware anyway 😄
It's still worse than CD
helps to put it to extreme quality though, although the hifi one will be better
Spotify HiFi will introduce that
but doesn't help much when most modern music is mixed in down in shitty quality
Yeah not to Australia we haven't even got Amazon music premium the Hi-Fi good sounding one
Only real choice is tidal
Tidal 🤢
We dont have Kangaroos in Austria 🦘
What
Are you saying it's bad the web player is perfectly fine and the app is decent
The app got everything I would want
And they actually pay ok royalties to artist
sans comic sans
No Spotify garbage
Eh, Tidal is the Apple of music streaming, shiny and for fanbois
This you @dusky plank ?
Compared to Spotify that pays garbage
The price they get is fair for the shitty music they put out
Wtf
because apple is stupid and I get free months for every hackintosh i make
I'm really the complete opposite of an Apple fanboy
The only product they make that actually makes sense in my opinion is the iPad because Android tablets are garbage
🤢
Android tablets really need to pick up the game and developers actually need to notice there a thing
Atleast my android tablet can install updates without me uninstalling every application I ever installed on it to make room for the upgrade
(yes I have an ipad too)
that is because you overspent and bought the one that comes with usable storagespace
what is it with you down under people flocking into this server?
No iPads are pretty reasonably priced compared to the over price Samsung tablets

Have you seen the price of the new Samsung tablets with the flagship processor
We brought a couple for work
I'm boycotting Samsung, so no
So what new tablet do you buy
Lenovo tablets are insanely cheap, I have three
Samsung the only premium manufacturer left really
What about the premium market
a man of culture
lol, my nexus 7 from 2012 runs recent ubuntu
It just seems like an android tablet thing to have bad software support
Good thing I have the P11 tablet then
So it's going to get updates for two years
Also, unlike apple, you don't get banned from installing older software on older tablets
Says the guy with a 17yo switch that was EOL'd 5 years ago 😄
It's not 17 years old it has a manufacturing date on
It's 2007 so it's 13
Nearly 14 it was manufactured in December
The hardware inside it is still 17yo, whenever it was assembled doesn't matter
No the hardware inside was manufactured around that date
So you think for the switches they made in 2016 they were using hardware from 2004 they had lying around
🍿
Probably yes, in refurbished or reproduced PCBs
Best regards, someone who actually works in enterprise hardware
So they instantly stop making pcb's when it was first released
I didn't say that
They must have some crazy time travelling abilities to know how many to make
It can't be 2004 hardware if it wasn't manufactured in 2004
Sure it can
No it would be 2015 hardware that's why it's got that manufacturing date on
They made 50k boards, those were used in the first 3 years, hardware is still produced in 2004 even though it was assembled in 2007
etc
then they made 50k more
and 100k more
etc
it's very likely the first three or four years were all produced at the same time
I would be quite surprised if December 2007 was using boards that were made in 2004
Have a couple mates that worked in Cisco at the time and they were selling pretty well
It isn't very unusual
2006 2005 years but not 2007
I've owned the switch since day 1 brought it in early 2008 I've got a open up again and see if I can see some more date markings
You will probably find date markings on the PSU, the system board and any ASIC daughter boards yes
I've only had to replace the power supplied once quite surprising that model had quite a bit of issues
And that was quite new so it was under warranty
It's just poe switch for my IP cameras most of them have been moved on to a new switch now but in a different location
Most of my stuff these days is on my 48 Port Linksys switch
Linksys 🤢
Yes it's just Cisco
it isn't
They literally had a partnership it's on cisco's website
sure, they did
linksys didn't run catos or ios though
nor nxos or aci for that matter
They did have a partnership
Where does it say that
It literally says Cisco on it
Sure, it still isn't a Cisco
Still gotta run the sfp when I have time and the media converters
Then why does it use Cisco webview
Wow a low quality JPEG
you are low quality
?
what
I still don't know why there traffic out at 11:30 while the boys are on site
It's not even a Friday night
It's normally nowhere near this busy if you check the its logs
Qld?
Yes
It's kind of crazy how quiet we are right now during the day but so busy at night this was the yard during the day
Still gotta get around to get my 6 axle truck licence only have a 4 Axel right now

Reminds me, need to fix my neighbours amp
and her yamaha dx7ii
thank goodness I'm going on vacation in 7 days
wow my isp was so quick to fix my issue I love them so much small Australian company love the competition on the Australian network and they give you so much data on their website to help you troubleshoot just called them up and got to a real person instantaneously based in Tasmania never even got moved around
punctuation saves lifes
we are eating, grandpa!
No more a NBN issue had it before on my old ISP
A lot of the times it caused by a router configuration error on their side
I guess only I have that reference point, since I installed some storage on the south pole via vpn 🤔
Lol punctuation
lol australian internet
@hushed basalt agrees on that one @dusky plank
What I'm quite happy with my gigabit fttp
And my ISP is amazing and overall the ISP choice is really good there are hundreds to choose from so there's a lot of competition
lol i have fiber to my raspberry
Yeah you can run fibre directly into your router and use a sfp switch if you really want to
@hushed basalt have you been lying, you said internet in australia was rubbish
please elaborate
For a lot of people home internet is quite rubbish but in my area it's all fttc or fttp
Dave shows you inside the MDF communications room in his building and all the fibre optic installations, including the new Fibre To The Premises (FTTP) NBN (National Broadband Network), and discusses the insanely high prices and the politics involved in getting decent internet in one of the biggest business parks in Sydney.
Forum: http://www.ee...
I guess problem about Australia's internet is the high amount of kilometres per household
Or clients per 1km of fibre optic is real low
That more looks like fttb
laughs in ftth
laughs in FTTH since 2004
I have fibre to the home it's decent
Or apple music, since australia gets the high quality music too
Most of australia ends up with FTTN with runs of over 500m-1km so slow
Do they even do mastered songs
apple fanboy never left the chat
Watch it @umbral cliff this one is spicy spectrum
Most of the people I know are on hfc our fttc
But hfc is pretty garbage
Brisbane?
No quite regional Redlands
https://launtel.net.au/2021/01/24/nbns-hfc-is-a-complete-dogs-breakfast/ hfc probably turned into the worst technology
I’m on HFC and have none of those issues listed
You must be on a very new connection it's very common to have massive drop out and connection issues
Or not have many people on your distribution Point
Nope, my area was one of the first to have the foxtel rollout (metro melbourne)
So late 90s again
Yeah probably not many people on the network
Network drops ? Haven't seen those since the late 90s
Yeah the network's probably over built as well
