There's also a hefty dose of French and Greek influence, but if you roll allll the way back to Anglo-Saxon, it's very clearly Germanic in origin

subtle pasture
#

It's actually kind of brilliant, from a writing standpoint.

#

Doesn't translate to other languages AT ALL. lol

subtle pasture
#

Seems to be a common error, so I have to imagine it has something to do with grammar from their native language leaking into how they form English sentences.

#

I know noun-verb order can really trip people up, as well

static schooner
#

Can’t think of an instance of that offhand. I do hear ‘intimated’ for ‘said’ or ‘told me’ pretty often. It’s that kinda stuff that’s not wrong, just weird

I think what I'm picking up on is the awkward use of present-tense verbs for things that should be future-tense.

@clear ferry how does LAN <> WLAN handover work

#

For example, a user has a laptop connected to a dock which is using ethernet

#

And they're in the middle of a video call

#

And they disconnect and the wifi is now their only connection

static schooner
#

my first thought is "poorly" 🙂

hushed basalt
#

I just figure it would be pretty common in corporate

#

We move around allll the time, but we don't have docks :(

forest edge
#

it's because everything is always connected even if it indicates it's not connected. it's an illusion to think you are ever really disconnected from the network

glacial knot
# hushed basalt <@457673488225009676> how does LAN <> WLAN handover work

Why are you asking atx? O.0

You get a disconnect on LAN, so the os switches to sending via WiFi
This breaks tcp, since your IP changes. Thus the application on top gets a disconnect as well
It’s up to the application to handle this well. Depending on how much it can mask, you’ll never know it happened

fallow karma

That weird for me, as my native language has only 3 , i couldn't imagine what's going on, when i learned English as a kid.

In the end it's the people's own fault. Especially in Bavaria there are alot old ultra-conservatives and "everything has to stay as is" . The good thing is, if they continue like this, the problem will eventually solve itself. The mere fact that Munich as a large city has a lower covid numbers than many rural areas says it all.
Bavaria makes up the majority of the cases for germany

#

My Roborocks knock the docks slightly (10 degrees or so) when returning. Easy enough to rectify when emptying. Perhaps you could stick the dock to the floor with double sided tape? My biggest problem is that I've just had deep pile carpet laid upstairs. That vacuum has gone from 100% reliable to losing it's way every 2 or 3 cleans. The wheel counters seem to slip. It also clogged up the dustbin and main brush for a while though that seems to be setting down.

Idea is to have a router (already running), and a camera server (already built and used but not running atm, no cameras at new house yet) and a 3rd box that does nas and containers

#

Need to play with it first, not used containers before

#

guys - a more general question. i have a RPi 4B but i am thinking to replace it with a more powerful Mini PC. In general do you think this makes sense?

dusky plank
#

makes sense if you have more than 2 cameras

hushed kayak
#

more than two cameras? you mean in HA?

dusky plank
#

yes

#

this is off topic for off topic but yes

#

if you dont have any cameras the only thing faster will be startup time, so no

hushed kayak
#

i thought more about being able to run "more" stuff on it. like on a RPi its almost fully utilized with HA. but if i would like to run a NAS, maybe my own router etc on the same machine then the hardware is not good enough

#

so rather buying a QNAP or Synology i thought about buying a mini pc

dusky plank
#

using rpi4 here. no way ha makes it run on any limit

hushed kayak
#

true - but if you add more features, HTPC, NAS, router functionalities it might look different

dusky plank
#

yes but that is not what you asked

hushed kayak
#

well yeah my initial question was kinda incomplete thats true 🙂

dusky plank
#

a raspberry pi has limits, as does a nas and a pc

hushed kayak
#

correct but it seems many times ppl recommend to buy a NAS system in case your PI does not offer enough hardware resources and I was wondering why? Why choose a NAS over a mini PC if the hardware specs of the NAS are worse

dusky plank
#

its your preference and liking and also the specs of the hardware.
tailor it to your needs

#

a top performance pc uses a lot of power while memory is expensive, a raspberryi is very low power but not expandable, a nas has a lot of storage but is restricted with upgrades in processing power

hushed kayak
#

power consumption was one of my concerns too in case this machione runs 24/7 which is why i was thinking about a mini pc. sure it will consume more than a Pi but still not as much as a full PC

#

i mean most of the power consumption comes from the GPU anyhow in todays high end computers

dusky plank
#

well theres a lot of difference between a 60w pc (without gpu) and a 5 watt pi to start with

#

get a clear view of what you need

#

everything else can run on a high power machine on demand

# dusky plank what are the practical speeds for wifi 6?

The main goal of this standard is enhancing throughput-per-area[a] in high-density scenarios, such as corporate offices, shopping malls and dense residential apartments. While the nominal data rate improvement against 802.11ac is only 37%,  the overall throughput improvement (over an entire network) is 400% (hence High Efficiency). This also translates to 75% lower latency.

According to wiki, it's more about total so wont be much noticeable to your single device home wifi 😄

i mean i prefer discord monetizing like this rather than plastering ads everywhere and selling data

jade tartan
#

so i grabbed the magic home rgbw strip controllers and took the gamble, appearently the ones with the IR port have stayed the same, and i should be able to flash the 2 i got

crisp sapphire
#

hmu if they turn out to be esp based @jade tartan

jade tartan
#

@crisp sapphire they are

No dice on swedish amazon. Nothing trustworthy

jade tartan
#

@crisp sapphire so what ive found in my research is if you get that magic home style, but with the IR sensor, that it's the ESP chip still

crisp sapphire
#

That lines up with my experience. Skipped the IR sensor

#

Well its $7.5 so il give it a shot

jade tartan
#

cant hurt, i was just gona send them back if they wernt the flashable ones

crisp sapphire
#

If i had the energy id develop some custom firmware for the TI chips.

#

but alas im a lazy bastard

jade tartan
#

anyone have an aqara motion sensor?

Sounds like something someone in #zigbee-archived would own 🙂 I have a bunch of their other stuff, but no motion sensors

Yes, mobile storage

It works on many levels

@last cedar did you have issues over the weekend with Banhof btw? I had super strange problems and eventually traced it down to probably being them. Random sites would not load even though DNS resolved and the IP was reachable. Contacted and confirmed. Monday they sent a message saying it's resolved and not had issues since. Probably all the rain/wind.
