ich würd an eurer stelle anner Rente sparen 🙂
Keep it in English or use private messages.
this is no apple server, no german server, and also no alexa server
it is, though, a server, so got that part right
sorry, but these statements from the German colleagues, are extremely inappropriate, insulting and well, if this is always the case, you do not want to come here anymore. When you are called a quote "son of a whore". Thank you very much.
<scampers off to Google translate 🤷>
its a german meme
not for everyone
😡
but thanks...
in literally every german thread you get this yelled back when you talk a foreign language
'Murica!
what is a do light ?
Oh, I beg your pardon!
Clears throat

Says the guy who speaks a language with more rules than Latin and German put together
rules are good smh
Mellow Arseholes Nuts Dinguses And Gophers 😂
I take it as Lorem Ipsum
It is not
lets me sleep more comfortable than the translation though
hate dealing with leaves in fall
run them over with a lawnmower
English IS Latin and German put together... plus a few other languages >.>
And more exceptions than rules, it seems
There's also a hefty dose of French and Greek influence, but if you roll allll the way back to Anglo-Saxon, it's very clearly Germanic in origin
It’s the only way to definitively identify people who weren’t born here, which is always a useful tool
Oh, looking for key misuses of the English language?
There’s a whole Wikipedia page on Indian English
Or, even more definitive: Not misusing English correctly
Wordplay is VERY hard for non-native speakers
Idioms, in general, are often difficult to grasp
That too. I’m always amused at the weirdly formal speech constructs from non-native speakers
Quaff 'o quaff
All Star, by Smash Mouth, should be part of American English curriculum. The entire song is one long string of idioms.
India might as well still be British based on the vocabulary and speech patterns
It's actually kind of brilliant, from a writing standpoint.
Doesn't translate to other languages AT ALL. lol
Is there any info on what causes the speech pattern "-ing of"?
e.g. "the saying of," "the doing of," "the helping of," etc.
Seems to be a common error, so I have to imagine it has something to do with grammar from their native language leaking into how they form English sentences.
I know noun-verb order can really trip people up, as well
Can’t think of an instance of that offhand. I do hear ‘intimated’ for ‘said’ or ‘told me’ pretty often. It’s that kinda stuff that’s not wrong, just weird
I think what I'm picking up on is the awkward use of present-tense verbs for things that should be future-tense.
Aight, yeah, I've heard that one before. I remember mishearing it as "intimidated" and was VERY confused
That link pretty much nails it, yeah
very familiar
Ah, seems I meant simple-present tense (vs. present continuous tense), not future-tense.
I've definitely heard the construction "I'm having a cold" vs. "I have a cold"
i really enjoy the finnish accent, mikko hypponen is great
my internal voice always thinks "right this second?"
@clear ferry how does LAN <> WLAN handover work
For example, a user has a laptop connected to a dock which is using ethernet
And they're in the middle of a video call
And they disconnect and the wifi is now their only connection
my first thought is "poorly" 🙂
I just figure it would be pretty common in corporate
We move around allll the time, but we don't have docks :(
it's because everything is always connected even if it indicates it's not connected. it's an illusion to think you are ever really disconnected from the network
Why are you asking atx? O.0
You get a disconnect on LAN, so the os switches to sending via WiFi
This breaks tcp, since your IP changes. Thus the application on top gets a disconnect as well
It’s up to the application to handle this well. Depending on how much it can mask, you’ll never know it happened
Why anyone need more than 3 tenses? That's weird. There are past , future, and now.
That weird for me, as my native language has only 3 , i couldn't imagine what's going on, when i learned English as a kid.
The English language isn't happy unless it throws in some complications
From my experience it is seamless
Even in my home setup where I have no handover configured and connect my laptop to the dock the conf call is usually back before the screen manages to display an image
you can have a bridged interface on your host? takes care of the lost connection
there we go... lockdown for everyone
where?
2 states in austria so far, others will follow
Oh ouch
What are the vax rates there
they are the lowest in EU
we are at 90%+ now I think
for eligeble persons, that would be anyone above the age of 12 I believe still
Yeah australia is on track for 90-95% double dose 12+ I think
NSW/ Vic/ act are all 90%+. Act is basically 100%
That’s very surprising though
not really surprising, our ex-chancellor declared the pandemic to be over like 12 times
We’ll get some updates in Germany today or the next couple days
I assume they’ll at least update the entire country to follow what we have in Bavaria
But there might be more stuff for us as well
We can only hope..
It's funny how different boot times can be between identical nodes
I just booted 56 servers
Currently only three of them are up, for the last 2 minutes
Still missing four of them 10 minutes after the first came up

There are multiple forms of current-tense for situations like "My son plays tennis" vs. "My son is playing tennis"
They're both current-tense, but the former is "he actively plays tennis as part of his life" while the latter is "he's actively playing tennis right now, at the present moment"
hello. where would i go here to ask for help with home assistant configuration type stuff?
In the relevant channel - read the names and the topics
Where is the conjugation channel? 😛
It was confused with the mis-spent conjuration channel, and somebody summoned the deep ones... we don't talk about it any more
I can see how that would get messy.
Any time you're measuring the disaster radius in AU you know you've got issues

Anyone know of an ESP, preferably 32, with the same footprint as this mediatek module?

Ill get the ender clone when they do that for 400 or something ffs
I want milti material, ive always wanted to do colored prints but fuck
I like shelly build quality but damn do thier prices seem a little high sometimes
i wonder why....
well some of it is cause they don't have a good footprint in the US

I can't get over the fact that our minster of justice looks like she is 16
The Norwegian Minister of Justice
To be fair, she is 28, but that is probably too progressive for some
Well, people complained about the ex health minister in belgium as well
the next Sweden
What brand of AC unit is that?
AC unit? its a Yeelight YLXD05YL
Oh ok! That pic looks so much like the inside part of my midea minisplit units, I thought you might have a different brand or model and I just got those in hass so I thought I might be able to help.
Couldn't stay away from those M1s, could you?
It's getting there, though https://hackaday.com/2021/11/17/linux-coming-soon-to-m1-macbooks/
I have a Lenovo X1 Fold here from work
cute hardware. But I still need to install a linux with drivers onto it to play with the display stuff
16:10 in Lenovo is so cool
I didn't buy a lenovo 2 years ago purely because it was 16:9
I used a X1 Yoga for a few months this year, the fold back hinge did nothing for me but it was a really nice machine
Very productive for something that was so light in my bag
are you sure, she is really 28?
I don't feel like my 16" MBP is any more productive
But it's wayy heavier and bulkier
I just got an M1 Mac mini and it's at least twice as fast in every benchmark than my 6-core 2019 16" i7 MBP. It's crazy. But the bulk and the price is keeping me from getting one of the new M1 MBPs for personal use
Yes
lmao
Lmao, what the hell
You jest @hushed basalt but a girl in my daughter's kindergarten has something similar in their house
They have a foot switch in the living room to turn off the lights when they go to bed
Was installed in the 80s

Seems like exactly the age at which playing with that switch that they can easily reach would be hilarious
I'll wait until the Framework Laptop is available in the EU.. Hope it'll be before Q1 '22 but I doubt it 😄
The whole house is bonkers, the people who built it decided to use 12v doorbell style buttons for lights all around the house that controls relays in the basement
And it has a heart shaped jacuzzi in a large room with an adjacent bedroom
🧐
Grown Ups 2: “I wanna arrest her for disturbing the peace! In my pants!”
we did it again
our Australian business partners asked us how it's going with Covid, since they hear Germany in the news there recently D:
we had a severity cassification of the current danger situation in every state in form of a traffic light until recently
this is it now

In the end it's the people's own fault. Especially in Bavaria there are alot old ultra-conservatives and "everything has to stay as is" . The good thing is, if they continue like this, the problem will eventually solve itself. The mere fact that Munich as a large city has a lower covid numbers than many rural areas says it all.
Bavaria makes up the majority of the cases for germany
Yea, Munich isn't part of Bavaria for most here^^
also, ehhh https://www.corona-in-zahlen.de/bundeslaender/ Sachsen and Türingen aren't far behind. And looking at the Second number will overtake relative to population the next week or two
Interesting to see the 3 Freistaat clustered on top though
Hm, vaccination rate is 5th from bottom. Far from good, but not the "especially" part of the country
420blazeit you lucky germans
Is that final now? I'll wait on some actual rules though. If the rules around driving stay the same it changes nothing for most people
Well legalizing is the only thing that makes sense
I'ma just leave this here... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfRGcybPkbc
that was an excellent use of ~9 min on a Friday afternoon 🙂
Any roborock vacuum users with multiple floor plans know if you have to put the dock in the exact same spot every time you move to that floor?
I assumed you didn't move the dock
But generally LIDAR bots have reflectors in the docks so they can always see where they are
my Roomba figures it out
My old valetudo(-re) resets the map if it doesn't know where it is I think and just starts
About ready to yeet my roborock vaccum and get something better, honestly...
Not sure what happened, but objects it never used to have any issues with, it now runs into constantly, wedging itself.
Cleaned all the sensors, updated the firmware, factory reset, no dice... still gets stuck under some table legs that it used to navigate flawlessly.
I want to throw Valetudo on it, but there's no option to have both Valetudo and a cloud connection simultaneously, which sucks a bit...
I have a Roomba e5 I think and it constantly knocks the dock around and then struggles to find its way back. Drives me insane.
Are robot vacs good anymore or still terrible
I like mine
depends on what you think of as good
mine works out well for me
Like home assistant controllable, not horrifically expensive, and actually manage to vacuum stuff
carpets or just normal floor?
Carpet & tile
that's what I use mine on
i use mine on a wooden floor and it works perfectly fine, i have no carpet tho
My Roborocks knock the docks slightly (10 degrees or so) when returning. Easy enough to rectify when emptying. Perhaps you could stick the dock to the floor with double sided tape? My biggest problem is that I've just had deep pile carpet laid upstairs. That vacuum has gone from 100% reliable to losing it's way every 2 or 3 cleans. The wheel counters seem to slip. It also clogged up the dustbin and main brush for a while though that seems to be setting down.
I have had no issues with my roborock, it runs every night in my kitchen and once a week the entire first floor
which combined is only like 100sqft so there's that...
Eh, my kitchen is probably 200sqft, first floor is 1500 or so
do you have a dead kitchen?
Now where the fuck did that extra word come from
@finite atlas I love your avatar

thanks, i love yours too
trash pandas are one of my favourite animals
Are they not allowed?
They are hunted for punting sport
and now for non nordic speaking people?
No
no... no.. I believe factually not that 🇸🇪
So awesome to be at a level where I don't need google translate for swedish memes 😂
Scandinavian languages should be fairly simple to read for English speaking or German speaking countries
Including Finish?
We don't include those in the Scandinavian umbrella
read yes, but not understand
psa: playstation folks can save money on black friday for ps+ on amazon, at least here it‘s 20€ less for 12 months
and today is the first day where my local electronics shop ran out of raspberry pis 😬
Pi 🤢
why?
baby's first GPIO
Might be useful for simulating a NSX-T multi site setup though
they are ideal for home assistant servers
No
Yas
why not?
no redundant storage
Horrible storage subsystem, rubbish scalability, power subsystem from hell
i dont consider home assistant as something critical that has to run 24/7 without any hiccups
Yes it does
I do
When it manages a whole house, and more
i do too
it only manages my vacuum cleaner as of now xd
but mine never crashes 😏 thats the trick
I haven't had downtime of HA in over two years, and that was only 20 minutes
the only downtime mine sees is to reload configs that don't properly reload online :/
Scheduled upgrades aren't downtime
too many folks rely on bad psu / too much usb accessories / cheap sd cards its not even funny.
makes the pi a bad rep
I wouldn't call a systemctl restart homeassistant a scheduled update
so, nvidia…
Yes, they are sobs
bad psu? Like the official ones?
Wonder what they are gonna do with mellanox and arm overall
I have a good mico sd card for my pi and a samsung phone charger as the psu
works flawlessly since 3 years
Charger 🤢
bad psu issues got better with usbc but before people run them with their shitty samsung galaxy 1A charger and wondered why it did not boot. when it finally booted they wondered why their sd card was corrupted
lol
shall i stress test it, how much power it can deliver?
oberfail
ye
shitty samsunggalaxy charger
guess you dont fall into that category 😅
xD
yes, do stresstest
5v 2.2a
as long as you don't plug too much into it /shrug
run a pi off of that pi's A ports 😄
Yes, it is fine driving my car with four different dimension tires, yeah it rolls forward, great for everyday driving
Not support, what do you mean

heck yes!
are your tires at least all circular?
I don't think that's you. Too much hair

I'm bald too now 🥳
What did you do? Age?
si

Now I do wonder
What would bald spy look like?
2005 called and sent me this 🥔 video I almost forgot
yeet
The side effects of getting really into Home Assistant
I don’t see a soldering iron or a bunch of random stuff used for testing 😂
Those are only mild symptoms
Soldered my first circuit
Let's hope the ESP doesn't explode
proceeds to apply 12V
Hey, that is a TS100
damnit
Okay it's not on fire, but it's not working either
Time to lick the soldering iron of truth
Watch out to only use 3.3V for flashing. With 5V you can fry some of them.
Yeah, that's all covered, using ESPHome, but I can't get the Resistance Sensor to work :c Worked on an ESP32, but not on a ESP8266
Alright, have to recrate the circuit for the ESP32, don't have the correctly sized perfboard though 😦
If its DIY but unrelated to HA, should it still be in said channel?
like what?
you'll probably get yelled at if it's not hass related lol
Driving an LC tank & feeding signal to coil for wireless power transfer
unsure of how to drive it. 555, astable or digital PWM
id rather not use up a microcontroller.
Tryna power an ESP in the balkoney through the window, basically.
are infrared interfaces nowadays only for remotes and the codes? or can I still get them to receive data?
trying to get data off a ancient nokia phone
why is it so hard to find esp based rgbw controllers
i knew i should have ordered like 10 of them years ago when i had the chance
how much strip of rgbw do you think you could run straight off a nodemcu?
not hard at all. just buy a magichome controller if you wanting cheap or that digiuno i already told you about if you want better quality
@forest edge got cucked twice on the magic home crap. They've switched to texas instruments IC's
when? cause i just bought two within the last year that are still esp
bought two this year. Both texas. But swedish amazon's like the US's wallmart.
lol
1/10 the diversity & products
magichome can be labeled under many diffrent names, always gotta pick by model number
didnt bother after that. Now i gotta fix this 100 kHz sign generator
shellys are nice though
i dont see much benefit over buying dig uno vs dig quad
rather have bigger and not need it / use it in the future
wouldn't buy a quad for a single strip, i could see it being a toss up if you were running two strips tho
$10 more and can handle way more amps continuous and burst
Apparently you need an IrDA adaptor. There is still support in windows 10 for it but will require some tweaking
Welcome to like 1997
I remember using infrared with my first Nokia phone
It was good for sending individual images. Since no need to set anything up
I have an irDA adapter with an rs232 DB9
Shaka when the walls fell
some of those questions you see people ask on amazon products really make you wonder why we haven't died off as a species already
What’s that
Robot mop, I think?
my nuc has a ir port... if this is irda compatible 🤷♂️
mood
Lol IR, what is this? 2003
?
yes

Brb going onsite to help a customer migrate off or network gear to their network gear because it doesn't work (they bring down the entire network whenever they add a vlan)
Classic layer 8
But hey, I get paid and they still have to pay for the switches
Give me the old ones
most definitely 2003
What you need fam
8 port efficient poe managed switch/ switches that will play nicely with that "consumer shit" 1930 you advised me against buying 🤣
Mikrotik has for like 1600 sek
Hps are 2300, which is a big step up
Their 24 port would be nice, but I am allergic to fan noise
Why did I know deep down that you only had big ones
I never got valns to play nicely with a dlink and a zyxel switch
Hoping for better luck from hp stuff
The playing nice bit I haven't had issues with since early 00s Cisco
@last cedar talking about @clear ferry
No one has new cisco money, or wants new cisco hearing problems
You know it
The switch I grabbed is 48 port with 4xsfp+ fanless
It would have 17 blower fans if it was a cisco
And cost more than my house
Also considering a poe injector, rack mounted
But they cost as much as a switch at 24 port, active and gigaabit
Which seems really silly
And miss this experience with tax
Hahaha
so happy - I finally spent some time on a new automation and its working perfectly
a sunday morning well spent!
Wait
An automation working as it should?
How many years did it take to put together?
first time !!
🤣
it worked first time with test data and then i messed with the times to make it trigger in 5 mins time and it worked
its a thing that pulls football clubs fixtures and F1 race times from google cal then using telegram notify to remind me an hour and then 15 mins before kick off
That it sweet!
I need to test out how I am going to do the new server
Truenas scale, proxmox or debian I think
i am on homeassistant_os myself - dont really want to tinker with the platform itself - i have a dedicated x86 old PC and its super fine apart from I have too many motioneye cams running for its liking atm
Idea is to have a router (already running), and a camera server (already built and used but not running atm, no cameras at new house yet) and a 3rd box that does nas and containers
Need to play with it first, not used containers before
I got an OMV NAS and its got docker so i run plex on that - again an old X86 quad core, seeing the probs i am having now with motioneye I think I might make a camera server also
Or get a coral
does the coral work under native debian?
cos i was thinking of making the cam server debian then docker
motioneye runs fine in a docker and i will need 4-5 different instances
Frigate > motion > zoneminder > *
its all working now!
that looks still pretty broken to me
Assumed wrong. 3 levels in the new house. Moved it to map the others. Came back to original one and it almost went down a very long set of tiled stairs 😬
the sensors for England and the Netherlands show undefined because there is no games planned in google cal
Hmm do you all think turning a telephone port into a Ethernet jack would be a possible option (like changing the wiring behind it)
telephone is usually 2 lines , at least here
Yeah just thinking if it would make the electricians job easy by having everything there
And just replacing cable with cat 6
And port with an 8 port
Yes it will make their job easier. They can use the existing telephone cable as a draw wire for the new cable.
Assuming the telephone outlet is no longer needed.
People use telephone outlets ?
I haven't for about a decade.
I'll again bring up the fact that Norway is decomissioning all copper line as we speak, and will start ripping them down \ up in febuary 2022

Copper is going in the UK, those who want a "landline" will end up on VOIP
Might see widespread fiber in your lifetime
Already happening... no copper is being deployed, and many exchanges you can't get a copper based service
That all started a few years ago, but we're slow here
Wooo
The boss of "Deutsche Glasfaser" (German Fiber) recently said "Stop giving us money, we have enough, just reduce all the bureaucracy" 😄
had this fiber for 8 years orso
lucky you
very lucky cos it was installed a month before i moved in and I didnt know it yet
I've had access to FTTH since 2004
welcome to germany, that applies to nearly anything here
gigabit only since 2014 though
50/10 since 2015 for 45€ a month
I currently have 600\600 for €90
mine is 55 a month i think it is and that has the basic IPTV package i dont use
Very few things bring me such joy as watching customers trying to migrate "to a better solution" but failing every step of it
Link aggregation DSL+LTE, 160/30 :c
With DSL only I'd get 50-70 MBits
Only since a few months though, before that it was 25MBit
Oh, even better than watching customers "make stuff better" is getting paid to sit on the flood installing my lab at the same time
But at least it's slow and expensive
its a mop robot, from xiaomi
Nope. Haven’t been a thing here for a while. Only if you’re unlucky to be on fttn and even then it’s only for one port in the house
But place im moving out of my parents into still has the old telephone lines in different rooms. So easy to repurpose them given it means no cutting new holes
The food chain in Australia is very questionable
Put it on the barbie
hey guys, just a random off-topic question. Would you choose Pi-Hole or Ad-Guard as network wide adblocker?
I use Unbound
pita to administer a seperate device for dns stuff only when I can do it natively in my firewall
Im a bit hesitant to install adguard or pihole because my router doesnt let me choose a dns server, therefor i have to use the apps own DHCP server. Im worried that this will 'potentially' mess with existing (static) and/or Home Assistant
what router is this ?
You can't choose a DNS server in your router? wtf
Ziggo
and also another reason why I run everything in my router\firewall
ONE PLACE
dns hello
I should implement CARP some day though, I've been putting that off for 15 years
You want a fish on your firewall?
Those seabasses from Animal Crossing need to go somewhere
Someone here using Ad-Guard's DHCP server?
Probably some #330990055533576204 people
static on each device wont be an issue, but you will need to copy over any statics set on your router.
How come you used opnsense instead of pfsense
thanks @woven sigil lets say i make the switch (let Ad-guard be my DHCP server) will i still be able to acces my router if something along the proces fails?
i use adguard but only the dns part
you should always be able to reach the gateway. use a static ip for the gateway and if needed one on the client when the dhcp fails
Because the pfsense people have internal quarrels and misfits all the time, pfsense used to be interesting when it was bleeding edge and trying to do cool stuff, when it became fully enterprise it was boring
I ran pfsense from 2004 -> 2019
says the full enterprise guy of this channel
I ended up installing adguard as a plugin to opnsense
You get the pretty graphs of pihole without any faffing around with extra containers or vms or such. It works reaally well. Automatically updates blocklist every night, and nice gui to administer it (not had to go in more than once)
I just have standards
Boiii
Well, that was 9h plus comp
Great Sunday overtime
Was it a level 8 issue @clear ferry?
Does anyone know if Sonos or Ikea symfosonik speakers report back to the cloud? like am I able to control it all locally?
how can I paste code in the chat
Please use a code share site to share code or logs, for example:
- https://www.codepile.net/ (select YAML as the language)
- https://paste.debian.net/ (select YAML as the language)
- https://hastebin.com/ (sometimes may not allow you to save)
Please don't use Pastebin, since it can randomly add spaces to the main view.
And, obviously, not in this channel
Dammit
control & state reporting is all local via UPnP, but many people use cloud services for streaming
guys - a more general question. i have a RPi 4B but i am thinking to replace it with a more powerful Mini PC. In general do you think this makes sense?
makes sense if you have more than 2 cameras
more than two cameras? you mean in HA?
yes
this is off topic for off topic but yes
if you dont have any cameras the only thing faster will be startup time, so no
i thought more about being able to run "more" stuff on it. like on a RPi its almost fully utilized with HA. but if i would like to run a NAS, maybe my own router etc on the same machine then the hardware is not good enough
so rather buying a QNAP or Synology i thought about buying a mini pc
using rpi4 here. no way ha makes it run on any limit
true - but if you add more features, HTPC, NAS, router functionalities it might look different
yes but that is not what you asked
well yeah my initial question was kinda incomplete thats true 🙂
a raspberry pi has limits, as does a nas and a pc
correct but it seems many times ppl recommend to buy a NAS system in case your PI does not offer enough hardware resources and I was wondering why? Why choose a NAS over a mini PC if the hardware specs of the NAS are worse
its your preference and liking and also the specs of the hardware.
tailor it to your needs
a top performance pc uses a lot of power while memory is expensive, a raspberryi is very low power but not expandable, a nas has a lot of storage but is restricted with upgrades in processing power
power consumption was one of my concerns too in case this machione runs 24/7 which is why i was thinking about a mini pc. sure it will consume more than a Pi but still not as much as a full PC
i mean most of the power consumption comes from the GPU anyhow in todays high end computers
well theres a lot of difference between a 60w pc (without gpu) and a 5 watt pi to start with
get a clear view of what you need
everything else can run on a high power machine on demand
One big reason why people prefer PCs over Rasp is SSD vs SD
Once you go with SSD the pi is about as expensive
i pxe boot, i don‘t pay for pi storage

no atx, no
Reolink solar panel -> power bank -> camera should work, right? Or am I missing something integral here? (not really a camera question so I'll hide it in here and hope Tinkerer doesn't see)
i see a burning tree
Can't burn when it's freezing right
At least it isn't a burning Bush
but nicely camouflaged
That would be against the rules
is there some ups which can utilize solar panel power?
I have no idea. The reolink panel outputs through USB and I was like U stands for Universal so it must work amirite
i imagine that battery being dead sooner than later when being discharged fully every day eehhh night
+temperature fluctuations
Oh for sure the battery won't live long but it only needs to over the next few months when there's quite literally no sun up here
As long as it doesn't blow up or anything
put it in a heavy duty metal box
👀
Are you North of oulo ?
you wanted it to be safe 🤷♂️
That location would be north of Oulu yes atx
Now I wish I had put the power bank in the view of the camera... I shouldn't have asked, ignorance is bliss 😂
Oulu is where I am, that is somewhere further north. So when you hear that northern Finland is burning you know who to blame
Damn Germans
downside to screwing anything directly into the bark of the tree is, tree's continue to grow and in only a few years those plastic mounts will snap off
course depends on type of tree on how fast that happens etc
original plan was some sort of "harness" thingy to protect the tree but this is less visible. It's just for this winter after which there's hopefully a fully operating HA setup running there
That makes sense. I set up my first home firewall this year using pfsense. Was fun to setup and do though
Hey, anybody know of any great subreddits (could include the homeassistant sub) where I can give away a Braava M6 to somebody who wants it? Long story involving Amazon "non-returnable items", so now I have two. Might as well give it away to somebody in the community.
which are are you in? Maybe I'll make your search easy 🙂
r/randomkindness is a cool place or was a few years back.
Swimsuit, togs or swimming costume? We speak the same English language in 3 very different ways - British vs Australian vs American English slang and vocabulary!

A HUGE thank you to Emma and Vanessa for their help with this video!
This is a look at 3 of the MANY English accents! I would love to exte...
Does anyone know how Google Wifis work
The original not the Nest
Basically, can they be used as wired access points with an existing router, without double NAT
Yes, that’s how I use mine
Do they do wireless handoff in that mode
Don't know, only have 1
I have 3 to work with
Google doesn't make it easy to find out
Also unpopular opinion. I think Opnsense has a garbage UX
I agree
Hi everyone, does someone see any way to grab the temperature values from this side without HTML scraping? I see there are AJAX calls, but I can only trace it to some PHP file that already has the static values in it: https://www.wetter-sauerland.de/livewetter/wetterportal-station-menden/style1/index.php
AWEKAS Box website
why wouldn't you use the html scraper for that?
this is the most german website ever
oh boi, please keep me from buying that new macbook pro
You can do some basic repairs on them now, right?
battery replacement maybe, thats all you can do in these
I just sold my 2012 retina macbook which served me well, still have my macbook air from 2013 but does not receive updates for monterey anymore
https://www.wetter-sauerland.de/livewetter/wetterportal-station-menden/ajax_index.php?start=1637582261581 Nothing but data in that URL
I'm waiting to get a Framework Laptop once they start shipping in the EU, all the other laptops are just not that great in comparison
dat m1max in a 13" body though 🔥
still got 600€ for a 10 year old laptop, should make a nice dent in the price for the new
NICE
the retina was a little over 3k , this one is now over 4k. I will wait a bit I guess... dont want to though
I want you guys to give me disadvantages for this aluminium brick! 😡 😄
I also need a new couch and kitchen table and chairs
who needs a table if you don't have a laptop to put on top
6 weeks delivery... ok no christmas laptop
Lulz
Inb4 "In Norway we use Lenovos to prop up our monitors"
Indeed 😂
I mean white font on white background
Weird logo on the right
The variable names and JS code.. ouf
That’s how far I got as well, so then scraping it is. I thought that maybe a direct REST call to their XML backend would be possible
Well and that apple is opening repairs to do it yourself is hopefully gonna make it easier to do repairs yourself (though everything being soldered isn’t great…. And the fact its only in the USA for now)
🙅♀️
you have always been able to do it yourself
you just couldn't get the original parts easily
Or manuals & any apple software
besides that I never had trouble with macbooks, they are built exceptionally well
You just seem to hate everything 😂
Yeah I’ve never had any problems with apple stuff
Nor Microsoft stuff surprisingly 😂
The hardware is nice, but window management is absolutely horrible on Mac OS
Yeah well it isn’t named windows is it 🤣
(But yeah, that and iPads having very weird multitasking are big issues)
Even my design and marketing customers have mostly moved away from Apple products
you cant sell a 10 year old windows laptop for 600€ either
Think I only have one customer left using them exclusively
Atx surely you can’t deny that the M1 MacBooks are very powerful themselves
Even if they are $$$ and run macOS
For any useful application outside of apple software? Yes
and for anything I need real power for I have servers 🙂
Heck, most customers don't even have powerful hardware on their desk anymore, it's a vdi or hdi box and thin or random clients
how much do you see thinpro there? And how often other stuff?
All precessing happens centrally somewhere
back to mainframe 😂
Mostly hp and wyze thin clients
good luck with 8k footage editing on a remote machine 😄
hardware is boring. Thinpro is boring tbh.
Video editing is probably one of the few exceptions, but I still have customers doing it
I've done VR over Citrix /shrug
there's a surprising amount of video/photo editing shops that use VDIs
8k can be done with a central server
we tried having conferences with citrix recently, 10 second latency hello 😂
not my problem that you can't into unified communication offloading ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Nvidia hardware accelerated rgs works fine
should have bought our product, that integrates it for you 😛
I have had customers work in real-time across country boarders with rgs and cad for a decade
It surely works
Even remoting into my home mac and playing videos is real time
Horizon of just now catching up
Fucking blast D:
yes but you have to transfer the footage to it first - which takes another few hours
Yet my uni can’t manage to have VDIs real-time on local network
Pcoip or bust
The footage lives on storage directly connected to the vdi host, no problem
the footage you take in your home is not magically on the storage for you vdi
vdi isn't for your mom and dad pop shop 😂
@umbral cliff sounds like the need for aIT budget and a team
You don't have dark fiber into the DC you say?
Oh they’ve got both
It’s just terrible

i have fiber to my company but 1000/1000 still takes time which can be spent on processing locally 😛
psssh, 10g in the USA? Pppllleeeaaassseeeee
Does anyone have the theoretical max speed of stamp cards at hand? 😄
Lol dialup nation number 1
Datacaps 😂
Even our cellular is shit
just put a starlink dish on your car and use wifi
At least australia has decent mobile data speeds and average caps
how can apple be at 5nm while intel still fights with 7nm? I dont get it
We can get home 5G internet, $85/month 1TB data
These speeds
cries in DSL
Fixed internet is not as fast lol
cries in xfinity
Max 1gbps, 50up
On fibre
Most won’t be getting more than 100/20 since thats probably the best value/ money
Intel is starting to look like they don’t matter anymore in the consumer market
there, he said it
Intel actually just came up with very interesting consumer cpus. They double as electric heaters, but performance is good
That looks like my old FTTC connection
come to the UK 😛
get starlink
That’s starlink?
Yeah, I won't see the decline of Intel CPUs the next 10 years I'm sure
no its not starlink, but you should get starlink
!remindme 10 years
Buffer bloat 😦
Need to get corp to enable 5g on my sim
That’s my home network. 5G at home is more like 400/50 lol
Something is wrong with the Wi-Fi driver and the qos atm
I just use more than 1TB of data a month
I have usually 3-4TB a month
See atx australia’s internet is not completely terrible for speeds 😛
I never check how much I use, probably around that too
Opnsense keeps tabs on it for me
Plenty of plex free to air live TV (thats live over IPTV because plugging into an antenna is painful)
We had gigabit on campus at my college in 2007 I think
When I went in 2003 it was only dual 155/155
still plenty fast for that time
Yeah, I only had 10/10 at home in 2004
all i know is, that we had a 16/1 line in 2008 ish
and since 2012ish i always had a 50/10 line
We had 50/50 from 2006 I think it was
And had 80/10 for a period in 2010
And got 100/100 from 2014
neat
Then I upgraded to 300/300 in 2016 and 500/500 in 2019, got bumped to 600/600 earlier this year
Roughly the same price all along, paying around €80 now
And we don't have the murican datacaps
i upgraded to 1000/1000 to my company earlier this year,
have 500/200 to the outside but they provide failover across three local isps which is nice
I love when customers buy "redundant" lines from separate companies
They have no idea if their lines cross at some intersection

Seen that happen a lot
guess they are good at it, else we have trouble with >3000 ATMs
Ass to....
Macbooks, of course
funny thing, we have a lockdown. but skiing is allowed 🥳
I didn’t even realise that fixed line data caps still existed
Welcome to America
That’s terrible
We had them for about six months in Norway in the late 90s before they realised it was horrible
We haven’t had those for at least 5 years for the most expensive/ likely to rip you off telco (telstra - though they have gotten better) and the others for about 10+ years now
As much as I hate the NBN and the mess it is, at least we have one consistent network rather than the mess that is America
One town fibre to the home, the other dial up
Guess it's time for an upgrade 😄
Ich versteh nur Bahnhof
Bist du verrucht
its a swedish isp afaik, they made a marketing stunt with these 1000/1000 a few years ago
40$ iirc
what are the practical speeds for wifi 6?
ye it's swedish and the price is similar to others. Perhaps before it was amazing. They have a "test area" with 10k/10k 🤤
I have their 1000/100 service
The main goal of this standard is enhancing throughput-per-area[a] in high-density scenarios, such as corporate offices, shopping malls and dense residential apartments. While the nominal data rate improvement against 802.11ac is only 37%, the overall throughput improvement (over an entire network) is 400% (hence High Efficiency). This also translates to 75% lower latency.
According to wiki, it's more about total so wont be much noticeable to your single device home wifi 😄
Can't get to 1000 it climbs above 900 but test file downloads before it gets closer to 1000
Upload is always like 115
it's impossible to reach 1000 due to overhead.
depends on how many bands you can use at once
so this statement assumes that all clients are wifi6 then?
or will it improve wifi4/5 connections aswell?
well seems like it's a revision of the 802.11ac standard. I'd assume it's the host side so clients automatically benefit
sweet, i will have to look further into that
but also cover "6G" so that would be new
Ah so more reading, essentially they can transmit more explicitly over a frequency like 5.0010 for a single client rather than say "bleeding" between 5.001 -> 5.009. Essentially more available "channels" in the same spectrum
so clients need to be aware of this, no speed improvement overall then for older clients :/
oh ye, think you are right. it's IEEE 802.11ax so something new.
iphone 11 and later already support it 🦝
I think the most I've hit is around 915 down and I'm running ubiquity gear. I read there is some small overhead which results in not being able to hit more than that. If I connect my laptop directly to the fibre router I got around 985.
You can't use bridge mode with 3. You can only use it with 1.
Pretty sure you can do bridge with three, but you have no wireless mesh so you have to wire them all
Which is why I went with Linksys
Bridge and mesh
what zigbee + RF hubs do you guys recommend here?
None
#zigbee-archived can advise you on the same Zigbee options
#integrations-archived can tell you about RF
is rf that bad?
Can be
Depends on what you're using it for
That however is not a topic for this channel
(read the topic, at the top of the window)
i found some 8 button small remotes that are only RF
RF 🤢
tempting to buy myself a wtf domain
no good reason
just because i want a domain to run my jellyfin and home assistant through
would go for .tech but the renewal on that is stupid
oh and also nextcloud
and bitwarden
@hot hearth I'm quite partial to .xyz
i was thinking that, but idk if my college will block that domain bc theyre kinda dicks about it
like my current one, my duckdns is completely blocked in college
Weird TLDs are more likely to be blocked than a .net or .org
so maybe it is just the 2nd level domain duckdns that they blocked?
I've had my .com for 20 years, long live dotcom
.host and .network aren’t bad

deez.nuts
If only there was a bofh TLD
Afghanistan (.af) is funny to use if the right circumstances. For example, I snagged phishy.af a few years ago. It's a bit steep at $139, and who knows, might support the Taliban now?
humongous.af is available, as an example.
for now at least. lol
sarcastic.af
meatlo.af
till someone buys https://knowled.ge/ 😂
Could an esp8266 run a webcam?
yes
Assuming not live feed? Or how many frames if you had a 1080 cam?
more than 300
Thats what i want it for, tent cam
That way when i see the temps and tent status i could also see
Im waiting out the clock at work
it helps shorter people reach higher shelves
it's a bullshit monetization policy that forces server owners to crowdfund the features available to their servers
i vote with my wallet and refuse to give discord money given the way they've chosen to monetize.. and then someone gifted me a $100 sub so now it looks like i pay for it 😦
I vote we all go back to IRC servers hosted in some guys basement
lol did you read the drama with freenode?
err.. what was freenode
i mean i prefer discord monetizing like this rather than plastering ads everywhere and selling data
so i grabbed the magic home rgbw strip controllers and took the gamble, appearently the ones with the IR port have stayed the same, and i should be able to flash the 2 i got
hmu if they turn out to be esp based @jade tartan
@crisp sapphire they are
i had one already
same board in it
though i havent tried flashing yet
Link?
and i just got them today, for a time frame for you
@crisp sapphire so what ive found in my research is if you get that magic home style, but with the IR sensor, that it's the ESP chip still
That lines up with my experience. Skipped the IR sensor
Well its $7.5 so il give it a shot
cant hurt, i was just gona send them back if they wernt the flashable ones
If i had the energy id develop some custom firmware for the TI chips.
but alas im a lazy bastard
anyone have an aqara motion sensor?
Sounds like something someone in #zigbee-archived would own 🙂 I have a bunch of their other stuff, but no motion sensors
Aaah, 112 new 10 TB drives in my Volvo today @last cedar
Hey, no need to be rude to me
I presume that isn’t for the Volvo 😂
Or do you drive a mobile server
Yes, mobile storage
It works on many levels
Since I have more than a petabyte of storage
And Volvo made the Penta engines

A Pentabyte-mobile
100 for customer, 12 for me?
@last cedar did you have issues over the weekend with Banhof btw? I had super strange problems and eventually traced it down to probably being them. Random sites would not load even though DNS resolved and the IP was reachable. Contacted and confirmed. Monday they sent a message saying it's resolved and not had issues since. Probably all the rain/wind.
Good idea, I should make an Irc room when I can afford a domain lmao
Then get a few mates on there
BC let's face it, not many people my age have ever used irc
No, I haven't actually
But I have Telias Öppet Fiber, and I run my own dns at home, googles and cloudflares as upstream, but adguard in opnsense
Oh saving 5 for me then right 😂
:(
Can you only fit 112 in your enormous Volvo @clear ferry?
I though you got a big one
I caan fit about 27000 in my old V70
V70, aka truck in disguise
Just dropped them off, even with the child seat in and not folding down the back seats I still fitted 112, could easily fit 100 more with seats down and using the front passenger seat
That is 75 just in the boot
No wait, must be more, 80 i think
The rest I just shoved randomly in the back seat
this will not make your HA run faster 🤔
It will make the recorder integration happy
How paranoid am I
カムラてっぢ
BSD tinfoil level paranoid!
Great. Bring me 200 then
i have a question
why?
Be more specific
storage mining, ofc
am I the only one who finds oled displays brightness very aggressive compared to ips/lcd
it strains my eyes
Somewhat yes
