Bunch of machines not getting updated anymore, so they just kept running...

clear ferry
#

It's not unusual for me to see 4-5 years uptime

#

More rare with 7-10 years, but I see a few a year

glacial knot
#

uptime tickets? do you get a ticket generated when a machine reaches X*N days?

subtle pasture
#

@glacial knot Yeah, we have tickets that generate for average uptime being higher than 45 days, and for current uptime being higher than 90 days

glacial knot
#

Hm

subtle pasture
#

So we had a bunch of tickets for CentOS 6 systems that hadn't been rebooted in 3 months come through in Febuary of 2021, because they stopped getting updates in November of 2020

glacial knot
#

let me check something

#

ehh, only 95 days
oh right, we had a power-outage a couple months ago D:

clear ferry
#

Most of my dark site customers have no less than 365 days uptime, when I stop by to do yearly upgrades 🦥

subtle pasture
#

See, we have services with year-round uptime, without any of the individual servers running that service being up that entire time

#

Yay high availability clustering!

last cedar
#

I think this is going to happen more often, why I took fast price :(

glacial knot
#

I want to see you cluster my HSM 🙂

subtle pasture
#

vSphere actually supports that, so...

glacial knot
#

I assume we have a different idea of what an HSM is in this context

subtle pasture
#

Hardware Security Module?

glacial knot
#

yea

clear ferry
#

But the German one

#

👩‍💻

glacial knot
#

how does vsphere provide that clustered? Does vsphere export an api for it?

subtle pasture
#

Each host needs its own HSM, and then vCenter creates a virtual HSM authorized by the physical HSMs

clear ferry
#

One of my xSP customers deliver fully redundant HSM with three site redundancy it seems 🦥

glacial knot
#

Ahh, so they do a sealed key instead of actual NVRAM keys
I hope they at least load it into the HSM instead of pulling it to memory 😦

subtle pasture
#

Also fun: If you have a case switch installed in your server, and open the lid while it's running, all the VMs on it will immediately pause and migrate to another host because the virtual HSM doesn't trust that host anymore.

#

You have to clear all the alarms to get it to run VMs again

last cedar
#

Super smart

glacial knot
#

We have a logic analyzer to read out TPMs on running systems 🙂

last cedar
#

Hide all the VMs from the raccoon that opens the server

subtle pasture
#

I mean, read the TPM all you want, the VMs are now elsewhere...

#

HSMs generally have tamper detection that'll trip and cause a migration

glacial knot
#

yea, that's what it's supposed to protect against

clear ferry
#

I wish Intel would do TPMs in the CPUs like AMD does, then it might get more adoption

glacial knot
#

because otherwise sealed keys are accessible on the SPI

subtle pasture
#

@clear ferry Intel does do that... have for years...

clear ferry
#

Wait what

#

Which models

glacial knot
#

yea, they hide it in their ME machinery

#

I think the ones that MS cleared for Win11 at first. 8xxx+

subtle pasture
#

It's called "intel PTT"

clear ferry
#

Oh, it isn't exposed for use though

subtle pasture
#

Should be exposed, it's just an option in your BIOS

clear ferry
#

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

subtle pasture
#

Enable PTT and you'll suddenly have a TPM module show up

clear ferry
#

I've never seen it

glacial knot
#

probably not in xeons though

subtle pasture
#
clear ferry
#

Gonna try it in my Gen8 and Gen9

subtle pasture
#

It was introduced in 2017, apparently

clear ferry
#

Oh, so Skylake only then

#

Probably

#

And newer

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, HP Gen8 and Gen9 servers still require a hardware TPM module be installed

#

There's usually a slot for it on the motherboard

clear ferry
#

Yes

#

I'll connect to a Gen10 lab system tomorrow then

#

I need to check this out

glacial knot
#

hm. Now I wonder if the TPM in my laptop is that thing, just labeled TPM everywhere

clear ferry
#

PTT doesn't show up in intel ark at least

#

Hmmm

subtle pasture
#

I think PTT got implemented on desktop systems before HEDT systems

#

So servers got it a generation later than desktops

clear ferry
#

Couldn't see it on a third Gen scalable Xeon either

subtle pasture
#

Hmm, no, intel was good on this one. Skylake-X does have PTT

forest edge
#

PTT didn't show up till fourth gen

#

and that was only like a few chips

#

my poor i7 975 will never see win11

glacial knot
#

poor CPUs that have to see windows

clear ferry
subtle pasture
dusky plank
#

I only get confused with all these Lakes

subtle pasture
#

Skylake-E was workstation, and Skylake (no suffix) was regular desktop

blazing sapphire
#

Spam report:
LaoCheng#5071
Thanks!

clear ferry
#

Doesn't seem like Skylake-X is in any actual server CPUs, only workstation

#

From what I can see

#

But I'm on mobile 🐶

subtle pasture
#

Doesn't help that intel refreshed Skylake a dozen times...

#

There's also Skylake-D, Skylake-S, Skylake-H, Skylake-W, and Skylake-SP

forest edge
#

they liked the name

clear ferry
#

I just say Scalable gen 1-2-3, everything else is for plebs

subtle pasture
#

I'm really curious what Intel has in store for Raptor Lake / Sapphire Rapids, honestly

#

Leaks suggest 24 core (8P/16E) 32 thread Raptor Lake chips on desktop. Not as many details exist for Sapphire Rapids (HEDT)

clear ferry
#

I don't see intel bothering pushing past 32 cores on Xeon either yet, in regards to licencing hell

subtle pasture
#

Eh? They already have 44 core Xeons

clear ferry
#

Sure, but they are very rare

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, the 38 core Xeons are more common

clear ferry
#

99% of installs I do are still 28 core

subtle pasture
#

I see dual 38 core Xeon systems pretty often

clear ferry
#

🥸

subtle pasture
#

The licensing is hell, though...

glacial knot
#

My boss at the university had one of those as workstation

subtle pasture
#

Takes five Windows Server 2022 Standard licenses to cover 72 cores

glacial knot
#

As in, 2x36 cores Xeon

#

Lead to a couple fun crashes if software that doesn’t expect more than X cores

clear ferry
#

34 cores would be two vsphere licences 😍

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, firing up Windows on a dual 64-core EPYC server (128 cores, 256 threads) just about made the task manager explode...

glacial knot
subtle pasture
#

The bigger issue there (dual 64 core EPYC) is the system has 4 NUMA nodes, so it's useless for anything except virtualization, or a NUMA aware database.

clear ferry
#

I still have a picture of windows 2008 running on 128 cores somewhere here

dusky plank
#

EPYC Turin will be EPYC

glacial knot
subtle pasture
#

Most desktop software only sees the first 32 cores on a 64 core EPYC, because they aren't NUMA aware 🤷‍♀️

subtle pasture
#

If your software is NUMA aware, more power to you (literally)

clear ferry
#

Hey

#

Where did you find a gif of me

glacial knot
#

Linux just gives you all cores unless you look for numa yourself

#

But there’s barely any software that actually should care about cores, outside maybe their number

subtle pasture
#

Even on Linux, software has to explicitly say how many nodes it supports

#

Or the kernel will default to 1

scenic radish
glacial knot
subtle pasture
#

There are certain concessions you need to make when running across multiple NUMA nodes, because things like memory access latency/bandwidth become inconsistent.

scenic radish
#

LIGMA nodes are even harder to manage

subtle pasture
#

You don't want to accidentally run your thread on a different node/socket from the one that's physically attached to the RAM where your in-flight data is stored

glacial knot
#

proc/cpus and sys/…/cpu just list all as giant node if not checked explicitly

subtle pasture
dusky plank
#

software dev is going the route of self distributing across cores anyway

glacial knot
#

Well, yea. Numactl should be numa aware

subtle pasture
#

Each node has its own physically-attached RAM and PCIe lanes

dusky plank
#

32 cores if you want

subtle pasture
#

Accessing resources on one node from another node is more complicated than multiple cores within the same node

dusky plank
#

multithreading aware programming will also vanish, it will be handled automatically

glacial knot
#

What? Auto parallelism is still open research afaik

subtle pasture
#

The first person who invents an AI that can automatically thread-out a single-threaded application across multiple cores will be rich

glacial knot
#

Partially to avoid spark storms

subtle pasture
#

Intel and AMD would pay a literal fortune for that tech

dusky plank
#

yes, but process is being made

#

I did not specify when but it will come

subtle pasture
#

Pretty sure we're a ways off on that one. We still can't even get branch prediction / speculative execution right...

forest edge
#

we'll be using quantum before that

dusky plank
#

heh.. no

subtle pasture
#

Modern CPUs already use branch prediction, and it does improve performance substantially, but it also causes problems

dusky plank
#

we have some quantum "processors" in our labs in innsbruck, those things need way more time than it will take to make machine learning aware of parallel computing

subtle pasture
#

The issue is, there are some things that can't be parallelized...

#

Serial operations where every next step is dependent on the previous step's results

glacial knot
#

And effect full languages make it harder to determine as well

subtle pasture
#

The best you can do is guess the most-likely outcomes of the first step, and then use your spare resources to run the next step multiple times simultaneously based on those guesses. When the first operation actually completes and has a solid result, throw out all the branches that were wrong (which might be all of them), and jump ahead to the branch that pre-calculated the result of step 2 (if one exists)

#

Not super efficient...

forest edge
clear ferry
#

Mmmm predictive branch

#

finite atlas
#

static schooner
#

sounds like you just need to turn yourself into a particle

#

they even made a movie about it back in...1989:

scenic radish

That was a very interesting documentary

Shrunky I honeyed some kids

static schooner

I think that's illegal here in the states

forest edge
#

finite atlas
#

you must know that i guess

forest edge
#

that moment you see a fedex drive past your house at high speeds and then get a notification on your phone that your amazon order has been delivered

dusky plank
#

what is harder? running ethernet over hdmi or making parallelism happen?

scenic radish
#

Yes

subtle pasture
subtle pasture
#

Basically nothing uses it, but it's there 🤷‍♀️

finite atlas
#

my receiver uses it

#

but i dont use my receiver

dusky plank
#

yeah, no way to see that in action

subtle pasture
#

It's worth mentioning that ethernet over HDMI (HEC) only supports 100mbps, while ethernet over DisplayPort supports full gigabit

static schooner
#

I've always wondered about that because I've never seen equipment that uses it

forest edge
#

because the cable is too expensive compared to alternatives. so really unless you needed ethernet pass through for that ultra time noone has any reason to utilize it

subtle pasture
forest edge
#

i'm saying hdmi cable, displayport cable itself is too expensive

subtle pasture
#

The idea was that you could connect your AV receiver to your home network, and any attached smart devices would automatically get 100 mbps ethernet over the HDMI cable that connects them to the receiver.

forest edge
#

reason why they don't run miles of hdmi through airports etc

subtle pasture
#

So it's HDMI cables you'd already be using

#

No added expense

forest edge
#

like i said above, anyone who runs any real length of cable don't run hdmi cabling

subtle pasture
#

For long runs, you wouldn't use HDMI cables... in fact, super long runs of HDMI are often converted to two CAT6 cables, because it's easier/cheaper

#

HEC has nothing to do with long runs

#

The maximum cable length for HEC is well below 100 meters

#

Generally, the maximum length for an HDMI cable is about 50 feet / 15 meters

#

You'd never use HEC ***in place of *** regular ethernet for pure networking

#

You'd use it to reduce cable clutter in an AV cabinet

forest edge
#

all more reasons why you don't see devices utilize the ability to transfer that type of data through them

subtle pasture
#

None of that actually explains why it never took off...

forest edge
#

$$

subtle pasture
#

Again, there's no added expense for the cables...

forest edge
#

is ALWAYS the reason

subtle pasture
#

Regular 3-meter HDMI 1.4 cables support HEC, even the crap cable included in the box with your average Roku does 🤷‍♀️

static schooner
#

that would be a great feature

subtle pasture
#

If I had to guess, it never took off because WiFi was already ubiquitous

#

And WiFi can actually outperform HEC in a lot of circumstances, given that HEC is only a 100 mbps connection

static schooner
#

it would be more convenient to just plug in a cable than to go through whatever janky menus they provide to enter WLAN credentials

subtle pasture
#

True, though a separate ethernet cable does that job just as well (and usually also provides 10x the bandwidth)

forest edge
#

it would be cheaper and faster to add a ethernet port and run cat than to pipe it through hdmi. gotta look at it from the person designing the device point of view

static schooner
#

I just had to provide my own switch

subtle pasture
#

A lot of AV receivers include a switch. lol

#

They'd rather include an unmanaged switch than support HEC

green inlet
#

Does any of this have anything to do with 🌮s

subtle pasture
forest edge
#

even so, it's still cheaper

subtle pasture
#

It would be cheaper to use DisplayPort, since it has no licensing fee

#

But that hasn't taken off in home AV spaces yet

#

Cheaper doesn't always win

forest edge
#

there is a video on youtube about the rpi's and why they use the connections they do that kind of touches on that

#

why so much shit used micro usb for everything etc etc

subtle pasture
#

Long live USB-B

forest edge
#

there is actually several videos on why that connector was used so much, from manufacturing all the way down

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, I actually really like the USB-B connector

#

It's amazing for prototyping

#

Strong connection to the PCB (shielding and pins), through-hole mounting, and the USB 3.0 variant isn't much harder to solder than the USB 2.0 variant.

#

I can see why it still turns up so often, especially on projects involving microcontrollers

forest edge
#

if they had been pumping out hdmi or displayport in that fashion you would see a lot more of it's features being used but no one wants to invest in adding something to a device that isn't mainstream or as cost effective on whats readily available right then and there

#

there's even some hdmi connectors that exists but you never see them. like maybe used on one device ever. there is a video on that too

@dusky plank I've been waiting on a callback from Microsoft since Friday. I feel you...

Anyone ever mucked around with smoke detectors?
I gather that my house has hardwire-interconnected smoke detectors like this: https://www.kidde.com/home-safety/en/us/products/fire-safety/smoke-alarms/i5000/
They go off when cooking ALL THE TIME. When one of them goes off, they all go off at the same time. In order to hush them, I have to find the right one, climb on a chair, and push the button. Usually that only hushes them for a few seconds (even though the manual says that if you find the right one they should hush for 8 whole minutes).
All in all it's an incredibly frustrating system and I imagine that lots of people just pull them out and put themselves at higher fire risk.
What I would love is for a way to indicate that I'm cooking, and hush the whole system for an hour or more.
Second best would be a way to send a hush signal to the offending alarm after the alarm goes off.
I have no idea whether this is possible or where to begin. Any thoughts? Anyone tried to address this problem?

scenic radish
#

Do you have a smoke alarm near the kitchen?

forest edge
#

I would not automate a hush for smoke detectors

#

if your smoke alrms have a timer hush function, and they are up high and you cannot reach easily or something, you could always extend the button that activates that hush down so that you could press it easier

delicate silo
#

Yes, there are two near the kitchen. I've already removed one

There's multiple layers to this tattoo, yikes... They're rendering whitewashed/Italian Jesus (as modeled by Cesare Borgia, allegedly Leonardo Da Vinci's lover, and illegitimate son of Pope Alexander VI), as an anime character (further exaggerating the influence of western culture on things like eye shape), as a tattoo (which are semi-problematic for multiple Christian denominations). stoic lake
#

Hi, I've been working on setting up an example (I'd call it a template, but that has specific meaning in Home Assistant already) for people to use if they want to show information from their 3D printers running Klipper, through the Moonraker API. I'd like to share the GitHub repo I set up somewhere here, but I'm not sure what channel to use. DIY feels like the closest match, but even that doesn't feel exactly right.

#

It's basically a bunch of text to use find & replace on to fill in the appropriate data for your specific set-up, like the IP address of the printer and such, and then copy & paste it into your sensors.yaml and cameras.yaml files.

subtle pasture
#

Seems more like something a plugin should do (similar to the OctoPrint plugin)

stoic lake
#

Oh, no, I have it working already, I'm just asking which channel to share it in.

#

It uses stock HA functionality and only requires some entries in sensors.yaml and cameras.yaml.

subtle pasture
#

Hmm... is there any way to get Moonraker to just output standard MQTT so a bunch of custom sensors aren't neccisary?

stoic lake
#

I do believe that's on the roadmap. I also just used REST because that was what I had any familiarity with, it might be doable with MQTT already, I'm not sure.

subtle pasture
#

Bingo. You might want to experiment with this 👀

#

If you get MQTT set up correctly on the Moonraker side, HomeAssistant will automatically pick up all the sensors

#

Then you won't need to manually configure them via YAML

stoic lake
#

Alright, well, if I end up figuring out how to replicate all of it with MQTT, what channel would I share it in?

subtle pasture
stoic lake
#

Righto, thanks for the input.

#

Until then, I suppose, if anyone wants the REST version, just private message me and I'll send the link to the repo?

@junior coral People (and other sentient or vaguely intelligent beings) aren't waiting here for your questions, ready to leap upon them the moment they appear. Have a little patience. Keep in mind that repeatedly posting to get attention is against the rules (flooding) and can get you muted or banned.

@trim tendon Please DO NOT cross post. Read the channel description, post it and wait for folks to respond.
