Alternatively, you can use Aruba AP series WAPs (which are cheaper, but do not have integrated management) with a managed Aruba switch that includes the IAP controller.

bitter pawn
#

i get annoyed when people claim they have job security because they get their company to invest into stuff that they only can work on.

#

that creates dependency it doesnt create value

lament coral

Don't get me wrong guys, I'm not sold on all that fancy BS.. well a bit id say xD but I want to learn what is cool stuff and what is marketing bullshit

bitter pawn
#

but meh. i get the idea.

subtle pasture
#

@bitter pawn I mean, it saved us on Windows licenses, and we should have Linux sysadmins on staff anyway...

#

It shouldn't create dependency if the company is operating competently

bitter pawn

something tells me they opted away from that though.

#

and are not operating competently ๐Ÿ˜›

lament coral
subtle pasture

Yeah, I'm the only one on staff that is comfortable with Linux. Our other engineers will usually dump Linux tickets on me rather than trying to google their way through it themselves. lol

lament coral

But I'm killing off bad Security practices. Passwords on: papers, email, sms, a freaking whiteboard (that's how I got the DOM password)

bitter pawn

shrugs

#

i mean if you are more proficient, makes more sense to dump it vs. learn in terms of efficiency

but that brings it back to dependency

and they didnt complain when dudes offered to help them move servers etc.

subtle pasture

Now, I will say, I've had to deal with some transphobia in the workplace. Thankfully, that was dealt with swiftly, and I didn't actually even know about the issue until after the person in-question had already been fired >.>

bitter pawn

plot twist, they got bigger pay raises than the rest of us dudes got.

Where can we even get lunch, is the canteen open?

Also, a plus for HP is that we use HP at work. Two advantages, maybe I can do some nw stuff at work and be familiar with the UI, and also... Sometimes you don't need a switch anymore and it magically disappears

So, I went with an Aruba IAP-324, which I was able to get used for $180

Not sure which install you're using? If you have system_health enabled you can check Configuration -> Info -> Installation Type, or see the following.

  • If you bought the Home Assistant Blue, flashed an image, or booted a VM with an image you're using #330990055533576204

  • If you installed Linux and then ran a script to install HA and have add-ons then you have #330944238910963714

  • If you're running docker commands or use a Docker manager and have no add-ons or Supervisor then you have #449717345808547842

  • Finally, if you use pip to install or upgrade you have #551864459891703809

@static schooner why two units?

static schooner
#

zoned upstairs and downstairs

tidal bronze
crisp sapphire
#

Ah

lucid bison
#

damn, is this ac units?

static schooner
#

yes

lucid bison
#

i dont have one unfortunately

#

i use server fans in the garage door

crisp sapphire
#

I dont even have an AC. It only gets upto 30ish C here during summer here.

lucid bison
#

i need an ac unit as my garage is sitting at 43C+

tidal bronze
#

I do have TOU based temp adjustments but that's never based on consumption. So scratching my head on all the consumption data.

lucid bison
#

bit it cost ยฃ975 to get a single split ac unit installed

tidal bronze
#

@static schooner what's your average 30day water usage ?

static schooner
#

I keep track of it in 24 hour increments and my irrigation is tracked separately, so it's not easy to get a 30-day usage

#

it's also just me, and whether or not I take a shower each day makes a difference ๐Ÿ™‚

forest edge
#

what no rain barrel irrigation?

tidal bronze
#

Of course when sprinkler runs.

static schooner
#

I actually do have several rain barrels, but they're not tied into my sprinkler system

forest edge
#

what they tied into? the hot tub?

static schooner
#

it's all manual - they have a spigot

#

I guess I could combine the shower and irrigation runs to conserve water

forest edge
#

manual.. pssh.. screw that

tidal bronze
static schooner
#

we don't get enough rain here for them to be that useful

forest edge
#

quad why you tracking water? afraid your dogs are lapping too much of it up or the pool burning a hole in your wallet?

tidal bronze
#

Tracking whether the Gardners bust a sprinkler head. Nothing else.

forest edge
#

typical..

static schooner
#

my water bill is usually $200-300/month

forest edge
#

300 is pretty high

tidal bronze
#

500 - 700 summer and drops to 200 winter

static schooner
#

yeah, I scale it back when it gets that high

forest edge
#

$700 water bill?

static schooner
#

my irrigation has used just short of 3000 gallons in August so far

forest edge
#

I guess non salt water would be kind of like gold in california lol

tidal bronze
#

Yep. Pool evap plus irrigation is a killer in the summer.

static schooner
#

other household usage is usually 100-200 gallons/day

forest edge
#

hardly ever break $100 here

#

maybe i should bottle my spring fed pond and sell it to cali's

tidal bronze
#

Dogs going in and out all day adds to the issue like you said. ๐Ÿ˜„

forest edge
#

yea i figured you probably had some kind of elaborate water feature thing like you see at kids parks on a hot summer day for those dogs

tidal bronze
#

Lol. So energy monitoring is kinda pointless I guess

#

Glad I don't look at my dashboards

hot merlin
#

damn, I don't feel so bad about the cost of power and heating oil here looking at how much water is for others now.

tidal bronze
#

Los angeles is a different animal when it comes to water and power. Drive 50 miles and it's 25% for the same consumption.

hot merlin
#

I should look for someone else with a solaredge system so I can just copy what they do for HA. ๐Ÿ˜„

#

Or I suppose I could be helpful and mess with it to be able help someone else in future.

lucid bison
#

Hey guys, you know them power monitors that has a clamp that goes round your mains supply wire, does anyone know if you can get WiFi versions so I can monitor the whole house power?

#

Also sorry I didn't know which channel best to put in

#

Yeah, there's been some talk about that new ESP. Looks like it could be pretty interesting, especially if ESPHome is going to have support for it.

#

It'll be awesome being able to make pretty much anything you want and add it to your mesh.

#

I'm sure I saw some doubt around whether it'll have such great battery life as 'real' Zigbee devices. We'll see.

hushed basalt
#

Yeah I suspect it'll be for powered devices only

#

In practicality

deft pewter
#

They cut down the cores and core speed, so that sounds like an attempt to give better battery life.

#

But I'm a scrub when it comes to DIY, so ignore me ๐Ÿ˜‚

hushed basalt
#

It's nice to dream

#

Xiaomi makes a lot of zigbee stuff unviable though

#

Their TH sensors are just ridiculously cheap

deft pewter
#

Sure, it'll be hard to compete with the cheaper consumer stuff. But for stuff that you can't find on the market, like @dusky plank wanting a silly adaptor for his meter, it'll make it easier for people to come up with their own solutions.

But yea, prittey exited to bring all my lights into zigbee

#

dont think that you can bring a wifi chip to talk zigbee

night zodiac
#

maybe with enough duolingo

subtle pasture
#

Depends on the chip, and how software-defined the WiFi/Bluetooth support was to begin with

#

I've seen a number of WiFi devices altered to send out Zigbee frames for the purposes of hacking Zigbee mesh networks

#

Aside from the tiny frame size, and the low transmit power, Zigbee shares a lot in common with WiFi...

#

The advantage of using WiFi hardware to hack Zigbee mesh networks is you get a lot of transmit power to play with. You can pretty easily scream right over top of the target mesh's legitimate Zigbee hub

hearty depot
#

sounds intresting, got something to read bout this?

It's quite interesting to think about what features it's looking for. Clearly it's not after detail. Like the barn... it didn't recognise the general shape, I had to draw a giant door on the front before it got it.

i have one question that i feel is best suited here.
