You can still use radarr and sonarr even for 100% legally bought stuff, as an aditional way of organising :)

Question for folks that are running Frigate, is there anything nicer than the home assistant viewer? Some things I've noticed that bug me are:

  • If I want to just watch from X time to Y time, I have to manually flip through recordings, this is worsened if I'm trying to look for something that happened
  • Sometimes I want to extract a recording from X time to Y time, currently the only way I can do this is fire up a video editor and join all the parts together and cut the ends off.

It'd be nice if there was a viewer that could do continuous playback, and extracting recordings. It also occurred to me while thinking about this that clips are kinda redundant if you're recording 24/7.

Tempted to look into building something to do it, but don't really want to if there's something else that does it (or something else in the works?)

it will fill up the drive with logs, need random updates to random services I don't need

#

I need to check out HA OS, it sounds promising

deft pewter
#

This is why I suggested it...

sharp scaffold
#

btw, is ha blue any good?

#

I see it still boots off eMMC

deft pewter
#

If you want to spend NUC money on something less reliable than an NUC, it's fine.

cedar chasm
#

Not really sure; once in a while someone will show up on chans with a bad disk image, it seems

#

not sure how representative that is

sharp scaffold
#

normal computer + ha os, sounds like a decent plan

#

probably still not as foolproof as a real appliance though

deft pewter
#

What exactly do you consider 'an appliance'? HAOS is the appliance version.

cedar chasm
#

I assume appliance in the sense that you payed money for it and can wring somebody's neck if something goes wrong

deft pewter
#

Then they're outta luck with HA 😂

#

I thought even the Blue was a 'you bought it, you're on your own' deal.

cedar chasm
#

one could always ping the mods (runs for cover at the thought)

#

Anway to Hubitat specifically, if it is less techy than HA and the compatibility with zigbee and zwave devices actually is decent it might be a decent alternative for some

#

I'm too far down the rabbit hole to make the change personally, though

sharp scaffold
#

appliance as in all you can do to it is power on/off and factory reset, and it's supposed to work for a while like that

#

i.e. home routers

#

won't need upgrades, won't fill up with logs, won't boot into "press y to check the filesystem" mode 😉

cedar chasm
#

You are still setting up automations and things, as far as I could see on their website

sharp scaffold
#

oh, I can set it up, just won't be there to do any maintenance

#

the thing has to run headless in a closet for a couple of years at least 🤞

cedar chasm
#

Well, hopefully that is how it works out in practice

deft pewter
sharp scaffold
#

not the "press y to check the filesystem" part

green inlet
#

This all above and beyond the numerous hours you will put in to do setup, again, depending on what you want to do with it.

sharp scaffold
#

yup, that's what I do for fun in my own home, but I wouldn't set it up for (clueless) others

#

even I don't upgrade the thing once a month, I generally like my light switches to work

green inlet
#

Well, if you don’t stay current with upgrades, we will surely see you here saying you jumped 5 versions and everything is broken

Half of it, yes. Just avoid the yellow-stained seats.

glacial knot

Are there any bus seats without various stains? I guess it's about how recent they are...

deft pewter

To be honest, I just get the metro instead. It's a 5 minute walk from my house and goes all the way into the city within about 15 minutes.

glacial knot

I go by car. Because public transport sucks outside major urban areas

deft pewter

I have a simpleton question, I set up a docker container with Home Assistant to just play around and see what the community is about. clever mortar

Yes, largely

If you pick devices that have local integrations, then everything is local. If you pick devices that are cloud based, then anything HA does with those devices has to use the manufacturer's cloud service

What I would like help with is the lamba code to add to my on_vale to compare a code. This is my end goal. I want friends and family with a key fob to be able to access my house. The current code works great as I want the code to go to HA first and HA to verify that I want it to open the door. What I am missing is that I want to add an automation to the esp8622 that of it sees my key fob that it will open the door without talking to HA. I need this hard codes so the door opens for me even if the Wi-Fi goes out. The door relays are on the same esp8622 as the reader.

Thanks y'all, I keep hearing its so easy these days so I think I'm finally going to jump into it this weekend. Coming from ST V2, if my current setup has seemed to get buggy over the years, would yall suggest removing all devices and factory resetting the ST hub for a clean new setup?

clever mortar
#

Well, you're gonna ignore it anyway 😛

#

I'd just treat the HA install as a fresh start. Begin by just experimenting with it, before migrating things over

clever mortar
#

I'd highly recommend you spend a while just messing about and learning HA

#

That way if you feel the need to blow it all away and start fresh, you're not going to be quite so annoyed 😄

keen holly
#

Okay last question, promise! Thoughts on boot drive: take my chances with SD card for now or worth spending $30 on a cheap external SSD?

clever mortar
#

SD card is fine to get started with, if it's one designed for a high write life (eg Industrial cards, WD Purple dashcam cards, etc)

#

You'll probably outgrow the Pi at some point anyway

#

Anyway, you'll have backups, right?

subtle pasture
#

Performance-wise, an SSD helps immensely (even on a Pi 3 with USB 2.0). It extends how far you can take HA on a Pi by a significant margin, I'd say.

clever mortar
#

Does help, but I've seen a fair few people run into power and compatibility issues with SD adapters

#

Anyway, any 64 bit PC from the last decade will outperform that Pi...

subtle pasture
#

Not wrong, though there are other reasons why that might not be desirable

#

And it's not like the SSD you bought for the Pi will go to waste if you upgrade to a PC later 🤷‍♀️

hearty depot
#

what do you want to tell me youtube..

clever mortar
# forest edge how so?

Maybe it's just me, but I found the Pi just couldn't do all I needed/wanted. With an i5 I've got so much more headroom

#

Besides, being not on a Pi solves all the power issues they have 😄

forest edge
#

granted there are a few limited exceptions in the forms of addons but aside from that I don't think one could ever actually outgrow it

clever mortar
#

Limited .... like any form of meaningful image processing

forest edge
#

inside of HA that is, we don't count none OS versions where people want to run non HA stuff on the same machine as well lol

clever mortar
#

Yeah, if you're just talking HA and some basic other programs, sure, a Pi will be "ok"

#

But, once you start stretching your wings, not so much

forest edge
#

||more pi's||

clever mortar
#

Running MotionEye on a Pi is ... amusing

forest edge
#

many cameras and something like a pi don't work well

clever mortar
#

A camera doesn't work well

#

Feeding it a 25 FPS stream causes it to choke

#

Even the low-resolution stream from my camera causes the Pi to choke at that framerate

forest edge
#

you talking about a rpi 3

#

my 4 didn't choke with 5 cameras

clever mortar
#

Aye, though the Pi4 isn't faster enough to matter

#

Interesting

#

I may have to buy one to play with then, see if it can cope, or if it too just dies

forest edge
#

granted i used masks so all 5 cameras wasn't detecting motion 24/7 lol

clever mortar
#

Well, on an i5 the low res stream takes about 10% of a core at idle

#

Then layer Doods/TensorFlow on top 😄

forest edge
#

you need to switch to frigate

#

i'm at 15% on an i7 with plex, and motioneye and frigate and a few other containers all running at the same time

#

my old i7 975

clever mortar
#

Yeah, I'm waiting on some features coming first

#

I like my timelapse recording

forest edge

oh you record 24/7

#

yea i did not do that on the pi

clever mortar

I think my laptop has a highly powered Intel ||rubber band powered|| graphics card

subtle pasture

clever mortar

My laptop has a 45W power supply, it draws a lot less than that 99% of the time

subtle pasture
#

Pi 4a and Pi 5 are in the pipeline 👀

stiff holly
#

Pi 4a and Pi 5? Will we also get a Pi 4a 5G?

clever mortar
#

Don't forget the display is a big source of the power draw in a laptop - both the GPU and the screen itself

keen holly
#

Just want to say y'all seem super nice, thanks for not running me off with my noobness

Though, that doesn't explain the resident raccoon...

subtle pasture
forest edge

yea i saw that

subtle pasture

So if you want USB 3.0, either get a 4B, or install a USB 3.0 card on the 4A 🤷‍♀️

static schooner
#

NVMe baby

forest edge
#

I would not buy a 4a

subtle pasture
#

And that's why the 4B exists. lol

clever mortar
#

I have no need of USB ports on a Pi that supports proper storage

forest edge

rpi5 will make tinkerer switch back to rpi lol

clever mortar

I've got everything from an original Pi up to a Xeon

#

Horses for courses, and all that

forest edge
subtle pasture
#

It's rare that I plug a peripheral into a Pi that can take advantage of USB 3.0... and when I do, it's usually a USB to SATA adapter for an SSD

#

@forest edge emmc is also an option, yes...

keen holly
#

I have a 4b and a zero I wanted to use for pihole but it wasn't working as good as I hoped

subtle pasture
#

Pi Compute Module 4 already has emmc and PCIe available

keen holly
#

The 4b I got for HA

clever mortar
#

Yeah, I ditched PiHole on the Pi and went to AdGuard Home in Docker

forest edge
#

zero for something like pihole is not a good option lol

subtle pasture

I'm running pfBlocker-NG on my pfSense firewall/router

keen holly

The nice thing about doing blocking on the same device that's also the firewall/router is that IP blocklists work

Yes, Docker

#

Docker is good

Docker is your friend, maybe

god bless Docker. Running anything I can't replicate with a few yaml files makes me feel icky now

||Just not for HA, I still run that the old school way||

forest edge
#

I wouldn't want to mess with running HA in a docker

stiff holly

what's wrong with running HA in Docker?

Nothing

forest edge
#

always have to tinker with crap down the road if you wanted to experiment etc

static schooner

it's too easy

clever mortar

I've got a few decades of Unix experience though, so pip install was trivial for me

stiff holly

I've been running HA in Docker, was super ez

Also, I do some weird ass stuff locally that'd be painful to port to Docker
||ok, I'm too lazy to code up||

Otherwise you're stuck doing massive audits before every 3rd party container upgrade to make sure they didn't majorly fuck up security inside the container

keen holly
subtle pasture
keen holly
stiff holly
#

does that actually do anything if you're not running a cluster?

#

I've never used vmware before

subtle pasture
#

You need at least two physical hosts, ideally with dedicated networking between them

stiff holly
#

yeah of course, I didn't know if that was an option you see in vmware regardless

subtle pasture
#

Which is the minimum for any kind of HA, really

#

The annoying thing with VMWare is the licensing costs associated with features like HA, FT, and DRS.

#

Hyper-V includes all that for free 🤷‍♀️

clever mortar
subtle pasture
#

I prefer VMWare environments, but I can't deny Microsoft is kicking their ass on value

clever mortar
#

VMs are nice for the ability to snapshot and migrate them live, in the right environments

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, though both vSphere and Hyper-V clusters can do that for both VMs and Docker containers now

#

Mix and match all you want

keen holly
#

Shoot, I think I forgot to click the button that time, sorry

subtle pasture
#

Really wish Microsoft would do an embedded version of Hyper-V. That's one market segment where VMWare has basically zero competition

forest edge
#

you can't block ads served through apps

keen holly
#

I watch so much Hulu, and I have the cheap version that serves ads. Sometimes I get lucky and during one episode here and there it'll glitch for every ad and skip for my xb

static schooner
#

I was forced to the higher-priced ad-free version for my sanity

#

the commercial insertions are poorly timed and too jarring

forest edge
#

paying money to be served ads is dumb but they claim itself the diffrence between paying $10+ a month vs paying under $5

#

that damn paramount+ thing is horrible. like 5 ad slots with each being 90 seconds of ads

static schooner
#

the worst part is that it's not very smart about when you've already seen an ad segment, so I end up rewatching them or being prevented from fast forwarding

#

makes me want to give up and torrent

keen holly
forest edge
#

torrent these days is basically all automated too lol

keen holly
#

Tried the paramount one and couldn't believe how many commercials compared to Hulu

forest edge
#

and is cheaper cause it's only the vpn costs out of pocket heh

#

I hate the paramount streaming app with a passion, so glad we bing watched everything on there till next year

keen holly
#

And I would get the commercial free plan except we get it Hulu free through Sprint on a grandfathered plan and they won't let us pay the difference

#

I stopped torrenting when I got 5 letters from my isp about some movies I downloaded, that was years ago and wasn't using VPN

#

Those letters kind of scared me from ever thinking about torrents again

forest edge
#

torrenting in the US is risky. although bollywood isn't as man hunting as they use to be

keen holly
#

Even with VPN?

forest edge
#

being charged with thousands of dollars by downloading crap you already own on disc was a frightning time lol

#

dunno, I don't torrent these days.

crisp sapphire
#

Only recently found out thanks to Tinkerer aswell

deft pewter
#

Time to get used to new keycaps... thought I'd try XDA profile for a change. Can't type for toffee now 😄

cedar chasm
#

Here is what I've learned: resyncing a RAID-1 volume after replacing disks is quite time-consuming;
If AT ALL possible consider just doing a backup to some other medium, then delete and recreate the volume with all the disks one is hoping to use.

#

This is surely what I will do.... next time......

subtle pasture
#

Weird, RAID-1 generally has the fastest rebuilds of any RAID type

#

There's no parity to calculate, so the rebuild is literally only limited by how fast you can write data to the replacement disk

#

You sure you weren't dealing with RAID 5 or 6? Or nested RAID?

deft pewter
#

Didn't they just add functionality to ZFS to allow adding/removing disks to pools? Sounds like you need to leave the 90's behind and switch from RAID to ZFS.

#

Add disk, rebuild, swap disk, repeat,.

subtle pasture
#

You could always add/remove vdevs from pools

deft pewter
#

So it's always been superior to RAID?

subtle pasture
#

You could always add/remove RAIDs from a pool as well...

#

The big issue ZFS has had, for consumers, is the inability to expand an existing vdev without replacing every disk in the vdev (with a rebuild between every disk swap)

#

Want to upgrade an 8-disk vdev? That'll be 8 new drives and 8 rebuilds.

#

It was basically pointless to attempt expanding a vdev. You might as well just make a new vdev with the new disks and migrate your data.

#

ZFS might be getting the ability to expand vdevs one disk at a time... soon... finally...

#

I'll believe it when I see it. Its been "coming soon" for like a decade now

cedar chasm
#

Currently 'Checking parity consistency'

subtle pasture
#

With RAID 1, a consistency check involves reading the entire contents of both disks and verifying that Disk 2's contents == Disk 1's contents.

cedar chasm
#

Indeed, well it's been doing a thorough job of it

subtle pasture
#

It's a block-level operation, so yeah... it'll take a while

deft pewter
#

The only fun block-level operations are LEGO builds.

cedar chasm
#

I would be grateful to get away with this, if one of the disks legit died

#

but next time I will have enough spare disks to just stuff it and rebuild

#

Does ZFS still require a specialized controller?

#

analogous to a RAID controller?

deft pewter
#

RAID-Z and mirroring do not require any special hardware

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, neither RAID nor ZFS require a controller, though RAID is often accelerated with a controller

#

Synology doesn't use a hardware RAID controller in most of their NASs. They use EXT4 or BTRFS on top of LVM, unless you specifically configure them for plain RAID instead of SHR1 or SHR2.

#

BTRFS is the default as of DSM7, and is basically equivalent to ZFS for NAS use

cedar chasm
#

ahaa

#

thus

#

Oh well, once this one dies, maybe I'll move to TrueNAS or whatever is hawt at the time

subtle pasture
#

Synology is still one of the better options, tbh...

#

I'm rocking one of their 12-bay rackmount units.

cedar chasm
#

woah

#

I'm still doing mostly livingroom computing, though in a rack, so I do like that their 2-bay/4-bays can be pretty silent

#

I suppose wise hardware selection could still fit that bill but the ready-made solutions are right there in webshops near us
