#

HA saves the day. I have noticed an unusual water usage pattern:

#

Came to check on the water valves and:

#

Water damage minimal, compared with what could have been

static schooner
#

"Hey there's a car wreck!" <everyone gets out their phones to take video>

forest edge
#

now you know what you can alert against. have all the lights in your home flash and the google/amazon devices yell out, "swimming pool forming!"

fickle gorge
#

Yeah, I just need some kind of logic to do it. So it does not trip with normal water usage.

forest edge
#

the logic is the spike, normal water usage shouldn't spike like that lol unless it's normal for 5 people to take a shower at the same time

fickle gorge
#

It isn't much of a spike:

#

There are worse spikes during normal usage

#

But I guess I could go for something like: If the water keeps flowing without pause for 1h+ start an alert.

#

Of course depending on the nature of the leak 1h could be quite a lot of water

tidal bronze
fickle gorge
tidal bronze
#

Found some leaky sprinkler bodies thanks to that ๐Ÿ™‚ Minimal leakage but still good to replace .

fickle gorge
#

I just need to make a better flow sensor. Mine is a bit ghetto right now ๐Ÿ˜„

static schooner
#

I really like the flow meter on my Rachio irrigation controller. Unfortunately it was too hard to support the installation and they stopped selling it

tidal bronze
#

Flume was $149 on prime day and I think it's still at the same price down from $199.

#

1 min install, brilliant design.

static schooner
#

It calibrates the flow of each zone and automatically stops and disables them when they go over

tidal bronze
#

Calibrate the flow?

static schooner
#

It turns the zone on for a minute or so to baseline it

#

Then 10% above or below is flagged

#

Only works for irrigation systems that otherwise have predictable flow

fickle gorge
#

Oh, it is an actual device. Cloud one at that. So probably not something I want.

tidal bronze
#

Oh. The 1st minute will always show low flow unless you have one way bodies or one way valves for each zone.

static schooner
#

You can set a pressurize time

tidal bronze
#

Hmm.. Easier to do at street meter.

static schooner
#

Since itโ€™s the irrigation controller, it knows what zone is running, which to shut off if too high, and what too high means for the zone

#

It has context that a street meter doesnโ€™t have

tidal bronze
#

So you don't have a separate irrigation meter?

static schooner
#

Nope

#

Never have

#

I was told that the cost of adding it wasnโ€™t balanced by the lack of sewer billing

tidal bronze
#

For me it would be a major problem not separating irrigation.

static schooner
#

It would be a massive pain to split it now

tidal bronze
static schooner
tidal bronze
#

Mine was done that way from get go. More than flow meter I would want a separate shutoff valve for irrigation and pool refill

static schooner
#

Installing that in that space with the lead-in distance requirement and fixed points on either side was a massive pain. Iโ€™m not surprised they decided that normal people couldnโ€™t handle it

#

I would like to install a WaterCop, but I have PTSD from installing my water softener and new shutoff. Not going back in there ๐Ÿ™‚

#

Nothing I do in software development can prevent me from taking a shower

#

Or flushing a toilet

fickle gorge
tidal bronze
#

149, 3 or 4 years is good enough for me. Nothing is forever.

forest edge
#

here we go.. nerd water chat

tidal bronze
#

@static schooner flume was a snap. Took me a minute to do the install and open a faucet for like 30 seconds and all calibrated and done.

static schooner
#

I used an ESP8266 to tap into my water softener flow/pulse meter, so I have the non-irrigation stuff covered

#

I like the idea and installation of the Flume, but I don't think it adds anything to my install

#

plus, I just missed the lowest price the last time I looked on Amazon and didn't go back

forest edge
#

noone really needs a device to tell them they just flushed a turd down the toliet anyways

tidal bronze
#

Depends on the turd I guess.

forest edge
#

our water company has some kind of monitoring thing in place we can go in and see if our turds needed a second flush or not

#

Woo, got my lancache container working again:

#

Repeat downloads from Steam now come directly from a 1TB cache on my NAS, at full gigabit speeds

#

And multiple PCs downloading the same update at the same time, for the first time, still go through the cache, so the files only get downloaded once

#

When you have 3 machines all downloading an 80 GB game at the same time, that's the difference between downloading 80 GB and 240 GB

#

Everyone gets the game 3x faster than they would without the cache, and it helps keep us from hitting Comcast's data cap >.>

deft pewter
#

That's all pretty neat but... what's a data cap? ๐Ÿค”

subtle pasture
#

A data cap is a blatant scam, common among US and Canadian ISPs

#

Data caps in Canada actually tend to be even worse than they are here in the states...

#

If I go over 1.2 TB of usage in a month, Comcast charges me overage fees. Fun stuff...

#

And it's REALLY easy to download 1.2 TB in a month with gigabit download speeds

deft pewter
#

Yeah, it's nuts. We have fair use policies here but that's just to stop people taking the piss and downloading nonstop all month.

subtle pasture
#

Assuming ideal conditions, you could use up the entire data cap in... 83 minutes...

last cedar

At 113MB per sec, how long does it take to download 1.2TB?@subtle pasture

Its a bit shit tbh that people are still using data caps

#

Like, it must be the peak bandwidth that is the issue for the isp to deliver

#

Not the actual total transfered

deft pewter
#

Yeah, the only real challenges for the carrier are throughput and contention. If the traffic were all spread evenly, it wouldn't matter to them.

Microsoft actually pulled the Windows 11 compatibility checker app for the time being. They might be changing their stance on the system requirements

Sounds like your board is recent enough...

#

Like, even if your CPU is old enough not to have fTPM, you have a header to install your own. That's how I have TPM 2.0 support on ancient motherboards from 2012

deft pewter
#

I'll have to check the BIOS re fTPM. If it's not there, I'm not buying a module.

subtle pasture
#

The two systems I'm sitting near right now are X99/Haswell and Z68/Ivybridge, and both have TPM 2.0 modules installed. Cost about $15 each ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

deft pewter
#

That's more than I paid for my Windows 10 license ๐Ÿ˜„

subtle pasture
#

Kinda not the point. I'd dish out for a TPM module even if I were to switch to Linux full-time...

#

It's just not something I want to do without, at this point

#

Case in point, I purchased TPM modules well before Windows 11 was announced ๐Ÿ˜›

deft pewter
#

But that's you, not most people.

#

Most people don't know what they are, much less care about having one.

subtle pasture
#

Yes and no. "Most People" use their new system as it came, out of the box

#

And most new systems have a TPM module included ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

#

I've seen PCs from BestBuy come preconfigured with the TPM enabled and the drives Bitlocker encrypted (using the TPM)

#

Which is, honestly, how they SHOULD come preconfigured

deft pewter
#

Doubtful. I'll reboot in a sec and check my BIOS but ifit has the feature, it's disabled by default. Most people don't know how to change that.

subtle pasture
#

It's disabled by default on DIY systems, sure

#

Most OEM prebuilts these days seem to have it on by default

#

I manage 2000 desktop endpoints as part of an MSP, and we made a push to enable Bitlocker on all of them. 96% of computers with 8th gen (or newer) CPUs had the TPM module already enabled.

I should probably do bitlocker and tpm on this new build tbh

but also, like why?

subtle pasture
#

It's a bitch to remote-enable a TPM. Usually requires someone be physically present to confirm a TPM reset pre-boot.

#

@last cedar It's more of a "why not" at this point, especially if you have an SSD with built-in AES encryption

#

Because then Bitlocker is 100% free. The drive controller itself encrypts and decrypts the data

clever mortar
#

Nobody, who has backups, ever regretted having disks encrypted

last cedar

It will only help if PC is stolen though right? Offers literally 0 protection other than it being encrypted?

I have Bitlocker enabled on some relatively old systems. Zero performance hit or additional CPU usage by picking the right SSD.

#

Nvidia massively improved context switching performance with Maxwell, which made running graphics + physics on the same GPU a much better option

#

Prior to that, your best bet was probably running a second GPU dedicated to PhysX. That cuts out context switching entirely, because you have one GPU rendering full-time, while another runs compute full-time

#

I used to run a GTX 780 Ti with a GTX 750 Ti dedicated to PhysX. The 750 Ti became entirely superfluous as soon as I upgraded to a 980 Ti.

subtle pasture
#

Nvidia cards prior to Maxwell did not support async compute, so they were forced to constantly context switch between rendering and running compute (in this case, rendering game graphics while also running PhysX on top of CUDA) when you asked them to run graphics and PhysX on the same GPU at the same time.

#

Maxwell and later have support for asynchronous compute, which allows the GPU to dedicate resources to run GPU compute in parallel, without the constant context switching.

#

In general, this means popping in a card dedicated to hardware accelerated physics isn't necessary if you have a GTX 900 series card, or newer.

forest edge
#

cards have almost always outpaced games

subtle pasture
#

Eh, i think the introduction of hardware accelerated physics was an example to the contrary. Hardware really wasn't ready for it for multiple generations...

#

Like, hardware accelerated physics initially came out for the 8000 series, and didn't really get good hardware support until the 900 series, 8 generations later...

forest edge
#

yet no games really utilized it. at best gpu advances helped make shitty coded games run a little less shitty but thats about it

chilly nymph
#

I'd rather not spend money twice if I see avoid it

subtle pasture
#

You literally had to install an entire second GPU to avoid tanking your performance, because async compute wouldn't be a thing for 8 generations

#

Imma chalk lack of adoption up to the hardware not being ready for the software, on that one

forest edge
#

that isn't the hardwares downfall

#

that was the game

subtle pasture
#

That wasn't the game, that's anything that forces a context switch on a pre-maxwell Nvidia GPU...

#

The same code runs just fine on modern GPUs that can run compute in parallel with rendering.

forest edge
#

that whole sli/crossfire phase was literally due to people wanting to squeeze as much fps as possible out of games that were designed for one but was coded like ass

subtle pasture
#

Oh, I'm not talking about SLI

#

Dedicated a GPU for physics does not require SLI

#

Case in point, I used to run a 780 Ti with a 750 Ti dedicated for physics...

#

Can't SLI those. lol

forest edge
#

just saying, there hasn't been a single game released that required hardware that wasn't invented yet.. every instance of shitty performance boiled down to ass programming.

#

gpu advances set the trend

subtle pasture
#

I'd argue both hardware accelerated physics and ray tracing needed hardware that did not exist at their inception

#

Raytracing is an even longer-standing example, honestly

#

Games haven't been able to run that in real-time until recently. The RTX 2000 series can literally only do it thanks to AI-based denoising and upscaling, they rarely ever raytrace at full screen-resolution

#

The RTX 3000 series is arguably the first to be able to run raytracing in real time properly

crisp sapphire
subtle pasture
#

And for hardware accelerated physics, they (Ageia) literally invented dedicated hardware to run the damn thing, because it didn't exist... and while Nvidia was able to port PhysX to CUDA, it didn't run well for 8 full generations of hardware due to limitations of Nvidia's GPU compute implementation.

@subtle pasture I think I'm doing it wrong, I manually integrated google home and alexa...but also use nabu casa lol

crisp sapphire

chilly nymph
#

My primary reason for subbing to nabu casa was to provide support. But I also needed a quick and easy way to access HA from outside and hadn't set up the vpn yet

#

@crisp sapphire That's ok. IMO the best use of HA is not voice control, but automations. Manual control is only a secondary need

but 95h for my employer? yea, no. Even if I didn't have to break multiple laws to do that

deft pewter
#

My new employer thinks they're being sneaky putting a clause in my contract to say that I opt out of the 48 hour per week limit. Doubt it'll ever matter but I don't think it'd hold up if they tried. In the UK, I'm pretty sure we have to volunteer to opt out, not just have it bundled with all the other terms of employment.

#

But at the same time... I'm joining a startup, so I know there could be busy weeks. I won't piss them off during my probation period by saying I won't put in the hours ๐Ÿ˜„

tidal bronze
#

Never thought of work as work.

glacial knot
#

yea, the 40h/w is legal max here. though it's some "for extended amount of time" verbiage for going over

chilly nymph
deft pewter
chilly nymph
#

I'd say I'm somewhere in between, personally. I "like" what I do in that I'm good at it and I like to teach people

#

Also, the other thing right now @bitter pawn is that we are (unfortunately) going through several major changes at my company, so every project I'm on is "temporary," and all of my employees right now are at the junior level. I'm training them up nicely and they're intelligent, they just don't have the experience under their belts for what comes their way. The approval I got for the two roles I"m hiring for now will at least allow me to bring people in with a few years of experience, but it'll still be at more of a junior level (2-5 years of experience). TBH it is both awesome and sucks because 1. it's very rewarding but 2. very draining.

deft pewter
#

2-5 years counts as junior in your profession? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

chilly nymph
#

Yes

deft pewter
#

I'd been doing my job for 3 years and got a 'senior' role for my next gig ๐Ÿ˜‚

chilly nymph
#

Depending on where you worked, I guess

deft pewter
#

What industry are you in?

chilly nymph
#

Finance

deft pewter
#

Gotcha

#

I'm just a code monkey ๐Ÿ˜„

chilly nymph
#

More specifically commercial lending

#

So basically for each of my underwriters, they learn a lot about each business and only really understand that particular sector after doing several loans for it

#

But if that type of borrower only comes in a couple times per year, it doesn't give you the opportunity to really learn it quickly

deft pewter
#

Yeah, that makes sense. For me, it's just about training my brain to solve problems... for you, it's knowing your sector inside out.

chilly nymph
#

To some degree...for instance, before this year, I had actually never had to do anything with solar. But I'm doing a lot of solar financing now

#

But I was able to apply the last decade and a half of knowledge from other stuff to solar. So at some point, it no longer matters what the experience you have is because you've aggregated 10+ years of related experience

glacial knot
#

oh, if I include books I read and other stuff I do that's related and helps with my job I probably go 80ish hours most weeks in the end. Just not much of actual code for the employer

tidal bronze
#

Commercial lending process can be a whole lot better in 2021. Unfortunately it is not.

chilly nymph
#

Also, not sure if you are familiar with the PPP program, but it's a covid response program that I ended up leading at my bank...which means I had to write bots to scrape OCR data off applications and tie into the SBA API

#

So just a lot of random stuff that I got pulled into this year

chilly nymph
deft pewter
chilly nymph
#

And a large part of lending is the "character" piece, which bots can't pick up on

deft pewter
#

I do all sorts of learning at home because it interests me. If it benefits my work too, that's a bonus.

chilly nymph
#

As well as understanding borrower's capacity

tidal bronze
#

@chilly nymph I agree. I was specifically talking about underwriting.

chilly nymph
#

That said, I've automated as much of the underwriting as I can at this point -- the training part is more in helping my people to understand what the data actually means

glacial knot
chilly nymph

Gonna disappear for a bit again -- heading to the old house to try to finish up packing. Wish me luck because there's no way I'm going to be done today which is the day I need to be done by lol

Good luck with the move.

#

We're all different ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

#

Hardest thing for me is to draw the line between personal and work. Thankfully I have an understanding wife. ๐Ÿ˜„

Luckily I do take my wife on work trips if that counts as taking her out.

glacial knot

well, gotta think more about snmp in HA again...

deft pewter

In a couple of weeks, we'll be taking our first trip since Corona struck. Feels like forever.

And even then, it'll only be domestic. Spending a couple of nights away for my birthday ๐ŸŽ‰

tidal bronze
#

Been trying to plan international travel but everything is up in the air. Don't know how restrictions will work out in September

deft pewter
#

Yeah, it's tough. We've been talking about going to Germany/Austria for the Christmas markets for a while. We want to do it this year while friends are still working over there but don't know if it's worth booking anything yet. At least it sounds like the Germans are no longer afraid of us Delta-infected Brits... because they have Delta there too now ๐Ÿ˜‚

tidal bronze
#

Saw Germany open up. Want to do scotland again and head to Egypt.

deft pewter
#

Scotland might be okay by then. Good luck with Africa.

#

The disparity in the number of vaccines countries are getting is nuts.

tidal bronze
#

That's what I am thinking. Wife wants to do Outlander tour lol. Egypt for street food.

#

BTW Austria is beautiful, specially the long drives.

glacial knot
#

I doubt Germany's going to stay open for long tbh.
Watch out for vacation time here with spread of delta variant.

deft pewter
#

Eh... they're talking about only letting vaccinated people in. I know there's still a chance of them transmitting it but it's far lower than unvaccinated people.

#

And to be honest, everywhere needs to start making concessions. Closed borders and a ruined travel industry help no-one.

brazen fable

Yeah I'm not a fan of the vaccine ATM. I don't like experimental medical procedures.

#

I mean once the technology and the vaccine itself is actually FDA approved I'll be first in line

But like... that shit alters your body forever.

Plus I already had covid and it didn't do shit to me so I'm not in a rush

crisp sapphire
chilly nymph
#

Yes, there are food supply chain issues, but most of us won't feel it as hard from an availability perspective because most of it is just directly reflected in modest price increases, in first world countries. In the others, there's a concern of actual availability.

#

There have been other significant hits in commodity availability in worldwide trade, which has caused a very strange inflation situation. Last month's US inflation was tagged around 4%, which btw is very high, but it's also misleading because it's an average, which includes some negative price migration --one of which is lumber, which dropped in price by 40% but is still almost 4x 2020 prices

tidal bronze
#

Lumber has been very good to me ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyone have any ideas why my Windows 10 machine suddenly fails to reach my DNS server, while my other devices have no issues? ๐Ÿค”

#

I can reach port 53 on my server but Windows still claims it's unavailable.

tidal bronze
#

Static DNS?

deft pewter
#

What do you mean by static? I've entered the IP of the server hosting the DNS service into the adaptor settings. It's worked for months until today.

tidal bronze
#

So static DNS. That's strange.

deft pewter
#

Yeah. So odd that it's just stopped. I've got AdGuard Home running on an NUC for ad blocking and DNS rewrites. My phone works fine, my PC stopped working.

#

I don't think there's been a dodgy Windows update or anything.

#

I can get into AGH via the IP:port, so it's not that it's blocked a client.

tidal bronze
#

Running pihole for some vlans never encountered intermittent DNS issues. When you lose DNS how about ping to DNS host?

deft pewter
#

Host is up, I'm SSH'd in for other stuff. Can even telnet to port 53.

tidal bronze
#

So ADH is a VM in NUC?

deft pewter
#

Docker container but yeah

tidal bronze
#

BTW I would run a -t from windows machine to host and check response when you have dns Vs loss

deft pewter
#

Container works. I can access the web portal for it.

#

-t?

tidal bronze
#

continuous ping

deft pewter
#

I never lose access to the host. SSH session remains live throughout and the web portal is accessible throughout. DNS is 100% inaccessible from the Windows machine.

#

I can set up a local redirect in hosts and access services that way. I just don't want to, since I'm also using AGH for ad blocking.

tidal bronze

Did you try add/remove lan driver on win

Yup

deft pewter

deft pewter

Fixed it, everything's back up. Still no idea what caused the outage in the first place.

I was considering a small form factor as well

20 watts covers the SFF with the quad NIC, my modem, Unifi AC lite and a 8 port switch

That's an intel i7 4th gen and 8GB ram as well

My server runs at 120w though :(

That is with 2 x nvme, 4 x DIMMs and 8 x 5400rpm and a 1060 card as well though

And a quad NIC

chilly nymph

Why do you need 2 nvme? raid?

And why does it need to be nvme? lol

hushed basalt
#

Raid1

#

1: nvme is neglible cost compared to sata ssd

2: no sata ports, power supply ports

3: the drives were cheap, so raid1 gives me some measure of protection against it

Well zfs mirror to be exact
