Already did few days ago.
This is why I bought 2 (one for me, one for dad)
did you get release early? It was released the final today for the public at least
I think I did it on Saturday. Got the update notification on all the units that was running beta.

Hi there. Where can I ask a Z2M specific question here?
There's no support for Home Assistant here - please look at the other channels for that. If you can't work out which is relevant, start in #general-archived.
If it's a question about the HA Blue start in #330990055533576204. Install related problems go to your Installation Method channel.

Edit: Indeed, Spam-and-Run.. Wait, guess that person isn't actually on the server ๐ฆ
Spam-and-run
how are these bots even doing this? does discord not have a rate limit on new conversations?
my guess is that a person set up accounts and then either pulls session tokens or api keys

I have an question about nginx proxy manager. In which channel can I ask this?
Thnx
HA saves the day. I have noticed an unusual water usage pattern:
Came to check on the water valves and:
Water damage minimal, compared with what could have been
"Hey there's a car wreck!" <everyone gets out their phones to take video>
now you know what you can alert against. have all the lights in your home flash and the google/amazon devices yell out, "swimming pool forming!"
Yeah, I just need some kind of logic to do it. So it does not trip with normal water usage.
the logic is the spike, normal water usage shouldn't spike like that lol unless it's normal for 5 people to take a shower at the same time
It isn't much of a spike:
There are worse spikes during normal usage
But I guess I could go for something like: If the water keeps flowing without pause for 1h+ start an alert.
Of course depending on the nature of the leak 1h could be quite a lot of water
Good save. Recently got flume installed, the app does all tracking for leaks, excessive usage etc. Added to HA just for the heck of adding it and calculating dollar amount on water usage.
This might be just what I need.
Found some leaky sprinkler bodies thanks to that ๐ Minimal leakage but still good to replace .
I just need to make a better flow sensor. Mine is a bit ghetto right now ๐
I really like the flow meter on my Rachio irrigation controller. Unfortunately it was too hard to support the installation and they stopped selling it
Flume was $149 on prime day and I think it's still at the same price down from $199.
1 min install, brilliant design.
It calibrates the flow of each zone and automatically stops and disables them when they go over
Calibrate the flow?
It turns the zone on for a minute or so to baseline it
Then 10% above or below is flagged
Only works for irrigation systems that otherwise have predictable flow
Oh, it is an actual device. Cloud one at that. So probably not something I want.
Oh. The 1st minute will always show low flow unless you have one way bodies or one way valves for each zone.
You can set a pressurize time
Hmm.. Easier to do at street meter.
Since itโs the irrigation controller, it knows what zone is running, which to shut off if too high, and what too high means for the zone
It has context that a street meter doesnโt have
So you don't have a separate irrigation meter?
Nope
Never have
I was told that the cost of adding it wasnโt balanced by the lack of sewer billing
For me it would be a major problem not separating irrigation.
It would be a massive pain to split it now
yes cloud but has api access. I am not anti cloud as long as stuff works. ๐
Mine was done that way from get go. More than flow meter I would want a separate shutoff valve for irrigation and pool refill
Installing that in that space with the lead-in distance requirement and fixed points on either side was a massive pain. Iโm not surprised they decided that normal people couldnโt handle it
I would like to install a WaterCop, but I have PTSD from installing my water softener and new shutoff. Not going back in there ๐
Nothing I do in software development can prevent me from taking a shower
Or flushing a toilet
I've been burned too often. With cloud it never feels like you own something you just rent.
149, 3 or 4 years is good enough for me. Nothing is forever.
here we go.. nerd water chat
@static schooner flume was a snap. Took me a minute to do the install and open a faucet for like 30 seconds and all calibrated and done.
I used an ESP8266 to tap into my water softener flow/pulse meter, so I have the non-irrigation stuff covered
I like the idea and installation of the Flume, but I don't think it adds anything to my install
plus, I just missed the lowest price the last time I looked on Amazon and didn't go back
noone really needs a device to tell them they just flushed a turd down the toliet anyways
Depends on the turd I guess.
our water company has some kind of monitoring thing in place we can go in and see if our turds needed a second flush or not
I'm not sure that's what the camera is really doing there
Only in KC.
@tidal bronzewe'll see if this coral is any better than my cpu lol
You waited all this time to try out a coral ?
well yea.. kind of overkill my scenario but i found one for cheap
Need to add 2 or 3 more cameras for better dog detection to the backyard.
why not just get gps collars and then you wouldn't need cameras at all
Easier with frigate
I don't think GPS can do geofencing for pool. That's what I want to track.
Going to check it out. I was going to create a strip zone around the perimeter so I know when they go in.
are these cameras wireless?
No poe.
oh then that should work fine then
I have home runs all over so need to add a switch, so should be pretty quick.
you just want to be alerted if one jumps in the pool?
Yes. The older one now suffers from weak hind legs. So someone needs to keep an eye when he goes in.
get a fence for your pool
and buy one of those cheap kiddie pools to keep outside it for dog access lol
That kills the look. ๐
can't imagine chlorine being all that good for dogs anyways
Most of his 12 years, he is been in the pool. Can't be any different now.
well i guess as long as he isn't shitting what looks like coke powder then all is well
kills what look? you live in a gated community behind a gated property. who the hell ever see's your pool cept you and your wife? lmao
oh no the mailman may catch a glimpse and judge us harshly!
I am dying here.
one of my friends growing up lived in the country and his property borderlined looked like a junk yard. i wouldn't go throwing 8 year old birthday parties there but beyond that who gives a crap lol
Let us know how coral performs
does anyone ever have that feeling when they're probably doing something the hard way?
I wanted to build something in my home assistant that works like the agent based monitoring and control in stuff like Solarwinds and ConnectWise Automate, so I was looking at using glances to modify, wake onlan to boot, then rpc_shutdown to turn off, and then some scripting or other to make sure things check states before acting

Hey, not bad
I see them so often here, I'm tempted to rename my living room, bathroom, and bedroom woonkamer, badkamer, and slaapkamer. Plus, they're cool words
is that like dutch or danish?
Definitely Dutch, but also apparently Afrikaans
Yeah that's what I figured seeing a weird germanic bastard language ๐
English already has a ton of loanwords, so I nominate those
In Finnish we loaned kamar/kammer to mean a more fancy room. Flabbergasted by the germanic living standards at the time I suppose
well, off to my badkamer
Welterusten (totally didn't google translate)
Woo, got my lancache container working again:
Repeat downloads from Steam now come directly from a 1TB cache on my NAS, at full gigabit speeds
And multiple PCs downloading the same update at the same time, for the first time, still go through the cache, so the files only get downloaded once
When you have 3 machines all downloading an 80 GB game at the same time, that's the difference between downloading 80 GB and 240 GB
Everyone gets the game 3x faster than they would without the cache, and it helps keep us from hitting Comcast's data cap >.>
That's all pretty neat but... what's a data cap? ๐ค
A data cap is a blatant scam, common among US and Canadian ISPs
Data caps in Canada actually tend to be even worse than they are here in the states...
If I go over 1.2 TB of usage in a month, Comcast charges me overage fees. Fun stuff...
And it's REALLY easy to download 1.2 TB in a month with gigabit download speeds
Yeah, it's nuts. We have fair use policies here but that's just to stop people taking the piss and downloading nonstop all month.
Assuming ideal conditions, you could use up the entire data cap in... 83 minutes...
At 113MB per sec, how long does it take to download 1.2TB?@subtle pasture
10874 seconds?
So 181 hours
Its a bit shit tbh that people are still using data caps
Like, it must be the peak bandwidth that is the issue for the isp to deliver
Not the actual total transfered
Yeah, the only real challenges for the carrier are throughput and contention. If the traffic were all spread evenly, it wouldn't matter to them.
For US businesses, it's just an excuse to charge extra fees.
I thought the steam client already shared update file locally so they only get downloaded once
THIS
It is like buying a car
But not letting you use the whole speedo
OH WAIT
๐คฃ
Heavy /s there btw
Yeah, Papa Musk is already doing that. What a ๐
But yeah, it is silly that we have data caps
Never seen Steam do that
The Battle.net client from Blizzard will do that for WoW updates
That's only because they switched to using torrents, right?
you are right. i thought it did do that but apparently it's just people bitching to have it added lol
You might be thinking of Windows
You can setup lancache and it does it. Pretty easy to set up
I don't need it
That's incredible
I'm sad I missed the launch today, but I'm glad it landed in one piece :)
RTLS landings are great
Itโs so perfect that it seems like itโs a liftoff run in reverse
it's all pretty surreal
imagine showing that to someone from 20 years ago
even in that short timeframe it's pretty nutty
the starship's belly flop is also pretty impressive
its going to be insane watching a starship & superheavy stack lift off and land
NASA's already contracted for rides to the moon on starship, hasn't it?
wow, didn't realize super heavy was already bigger than the Atlas V
by a lot
~16%
hell, the starship's almost as big as the Atlas V
well crap. my ironwolf drive in my goflex took a crap
NASA and others were trying to do this in the 1990s but, in each case, there were organizational problems.
What, we've had a moonbase since the 80s
Haven't you seen the documentary For All Mankind
Space: 1999
space is a myth. that shit just goes up and hits a sky box and sometimes gets stuck for a bit before falling back down
@last cedar & @deft pewter be like....
Yup. I'll eat almost anything.
Microsoft actually pulled the Windows 11 compatibility checker app for the time being. They might be changing their stance on the system requirements
They'd been saying intel 8th gen (or newer) CPUs were required, but the knowledge base article for Windows 11 CPU compatibility now lists CPUs that are as old as 6th gen.
laughs in 2700k
What people are suspecting is that AVX2 support is the real minimum requirement
Which means the oldest CPU architecture you'll get away with is actually Haswell (4th gen)
The TPM requirement is the most ridiculous. My motherboard's not even that old and it's not supported.
I don't think I can run Win11 on any machine I have. A bunch of Macs, an older I5 as my lone Win machine, some VMs
I see some videos on installing it on VMWare Fusion, so maybe...
Parallels has confirmed it is beginning work on Windows 11 compatibility and will do "everything that's possible" to bring Windows 11 to macOS.
Is there a technical reason for requiring AVX2 support? Lots of people are still using their 2500K and 2600K
Double check that picture and how many ram and hdd they have?
Heh, I have motherboards from 2012 that can meet the TPM requirement...
Also I saw someone did Windows 11 on Nokia lumia and raspberry pi with arm cpu
And any recent Intel or AMD system has a TPM built directly into the CPU, you just have to turn it on.
Intel calls it "PTT", and AMD calls it "fTPM"
@deft pewter So look for one of those in your BIOS ^
Yes, but bios have function disable tpm.
First time my bios was default and I checked tpm not listed, does not support Windows 11 on my amd motherboard x570
Then I looked on my bios and there was disable tpm by default, so I turned on and pc health check said support Windows 11
Weird, time to yell at your motherboard manufacturer, because they're literally not letting you access all of the features of the CPU you paid for...
Because you should have fTPM as an option on x570
Oh, you were able to turn it on?
Device manager showing I have amd trust device but does not list like tpm 2.0
Yes, it is
Yep
My current setup meets all the requirements (EFI, SecureBoot, TPM 2.0 module installed) except for the "Intel 8th gen or higher" CPU
But I suspect it'll run just fine on an i7 5960x or i7 6950x...
Hmm, should be work.
If you remember how about requirements Cpu for Windows vista
Windows 11 has Skylake (6th gen) CPUs in its supported list. The i7 6950x (Broadwell-E) is 5th gen, in spite of being a "6000" series part
People have already shown the current preview of Windows 11 running on Haswell (4th gen), so I think my odds are good. lol
If you have free time, why not try inseder programme to try windows 11 for your pc hardware
seems like my token Windows machine with I5-3470 (Ivy Bridge, 2012) doesn't make the cut
HA is really damn awesome, sincerely - a newb... I just hooked up my car to Home Assistant. That's pretty damn cool. The amount of integrations possible kinda baffles me. I can check whether the car is locked, remotely start climate, and even check tire pressure from the app lol
I didn't anticipate doing HA stuff would be so addictive
I have TPM headers, no TPM. ASRock X570. Figured it would be recent enough but meh. ๐คทโโ๏ธ
It's a shitty requirement. Along with some of their other decisions. Rules out a lot of modern hardware.
This mobo was apparently only released in July 2019. Why the hell should I have to upgrade a 2 year old piece of hardware?
Few ppl actually thought it was. Sent the clip to a few of my not so spacex inclined Joe friends.
its even more spectacular
the best one I've seen is the two boosters landing side-by-side: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLidfyD4eUM
Incredible clip of Elon Musks, SpaceX Falcon Heavy Side Boosters landing simultaneously at NASA Kennedy Space Centre in Florida
i cried on the first FH launch
after looking forward to it for 7 years
Actually, not sure if it was 7. Lets just say 5+
In this video of a #SpaceX Raptor engine test, we can see shock diamonds (or Mach diamonds) form in the supersonic exhaust plume.
These are only possible when the engine is firing in-atmosphere. https://t.co/KcAKt5qcdO
โค๏ธ
On x570, you should have the option of just installing a TPM module, or enabling fTPM on your CPU.
Sounds like your board is recent enough...
Like, even if your CPU is old enough not to have fTPM, you have a header to install your own. That's how I have TPM 2.0 support on ancient motherboards from 2012
I'll have to check the BIOS re fTPM. If it's not there, I'm not buying a module.
The two systems I'm sitting near right now are X99/Haswell and Z68/Ivybridge, and both have TPM 2.0 modules installed. Cost about $15 each ๐คทโโ๏ธ
That's more than I paid for my Windows 10 license ๐
Kinda not the point. I'd dish out for a TPM module even if I were to switch to Linux full-time...
It's just not something I want to do without, at this point
Case in point, I purchased TPM modules well before Windows 11 was announced ๐
But that's you, not most people.
Most people don't know what they are, much less care about having one.
Yes and no. "Most People" use their new system as it came, out of the box
And most new systems have a TPM module included ๐คทโโ๏ธ
I've seen PCs from BestBuy come preconfigured with the TPM enabled and the drives Bitlocker encrypted (using the TPM)
Which is, honestly, how they SHOULD come preconfigured
Doubtful. I'll reboot in a sec and check my BIOS but ifit has the feature, it's disabled by default. Most people don't know how to change that.
It's disabled by default on DIY systems, sure
Most OEM prebuilts these days seem to have it on by default
I manage 2000 desktop endpoints as part of an MSP, and we made a push to enable Bitlocker on all of them. 96% of computers with 8th gen (or newer) CPUs had the TPM module already enabled.
nice
Yeah, made my job easier. lol
It's a bitch to remote-enable a TPM. Usually requires someone be physically present to confirm a TPM reset pre-boot.
@last cedar It's more of a "why not" at this point, especially if you have an SSD with built-in AES encryption
Because then Bitlocker is 100% free. The drive controller itself encrypts and decrypts the data
Nobody, who has backups, ever regretted having disks encrypted
It will only help if PC is stolen though right? Offers literally 0 protection other than it being encrypted?
I have Bitlocker enabled on some relatively old systems. Zero performance hit or additional CPU usage by picking the right SSD.
Stolen, seized in a raid, the usual
My primary reason for snagging a TPM was Bitlocker, but Windows 10 also has some additional security features you can turn on if you have a module, so I went ahead and did that too ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Raccoons don't get raided. They perform the raids.
I would imagine that there are backdoors for when stuff is raided and police want to get in
How often do you get raided in the UK
but yeah, I guess that makes sense
All the time.... I have an open door policy now ๐
I just enabled TPM. Thanks for the tip re fTPM... I still stand by my argument that I wouldn't bother paying to upgrade/change my hardware just for Win11 - and many others won't.
I see
Scotland isn't the whole UK. Just because it's normal around your parts... ๐
I mean, that's fine. Have fun trying to switch to Linux...
Does Linux require TPM or something?
No, but you should be using one with Linux too
Like, you should have been using your TPM this entire time. lol
You say that... and yet most people don't.
You're a sys admin. You know your shit. Most don't give a damn.
You say that like most new systems don't have it enabled by default now...
They don't even know they're using it, but they're using it
I am 99% sure mine isn't enabled by default
most people can't even get their ram to run an xmp profile
And that saves them from phishing scams and malware, right? Good.
I will say, I've never seen it enabled by default on a motherboard sold as stand-alone for the DIY PC market
The average computer user isn't going to be protected from shit by a TPM. They fall for social engineering.
this is a b550 board bought like 2 months ago
@deft pewter Oh, you mgiht also want to make sure AMD-V is enabled so you can enable core isolation.
It's also enabled by default if you install Windows 10 on a system where hardware virtualization is present, so you don't need to know
lol
I am debating if I am poorly read up on stuff that actually matters
But it uses hardware virtualization to improve process isolation/protection
or if no one is actually talking about this outside from system admins
Aha, so if for example vt-d and vt-x is disabled it won't be enabled
or am I missunderstanding
VTx is all you need, it doesn't use VTd
Most people don't need to worry about it because it's either A) already enabled by default, or B) their system doesn't support it.
It's mostly DIY builders that need to actually fiddle with things.
I 100% get the feeling that stuff stuff is
- important
- not really explained properly
- probably will alienate most people
I consider myself fairly knowledgeable about computers. After all, I've built every one I've owned since I was 13. Some of the stuff Leapo knows, I know nothing about... not because I'm stupid but because it's never mattered.
I AM IN THIS AND I DON'T LIKE IT
๐
lol
Like that was the first time I heard anyone mention core isolation
and tpm was just annoying pcb I got in a server, that I wiped and put opnsense on, literally drew out the module
now all of a sudden I have done something super idiotic
without knowing it
You won't ever notice the difference ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Lots of these things are just 'best practice'. Doesn't mean the world will explode if you don't do them.
If there were as many guides about this stuff as overclocking, people might understand a care
Nahh. TPM's won't help you run Crysis.
TPMs mostly help not running stuff
I like to run stuff. TPM's aren't for me.
@deft pewter are we skipping windows 11 then btw?
๐คฃ
They will probably be windows 12 by the time we are done with 10
Skipping?just ban windows into a vom, like you are supposed to
I'm not against using 11. Just wouldn't have changed my hardware to use it.
"Memory integrity can't be turned on due to incompatible drivers"
Aaaand it's a list of nothing but Logitech drivers. lolz
Mobo and CPU are good for a few years yet. Next thing to upgrade is the GPU (if there's ever stock again).
Only thing Logitech I have connected is a webcam, and Imma yeet that soon
LOL stock of gpus
Always hated Logitech's crap software :/
I've actually seen stock of GPU's on UK retail sites over the last week. The wankers are still trying to sell them for twice RRP though...
Bad enough when the scalpers do that. Makes me furious when a retailer does it.
Oh, it's the driver for my PC racing wheel that's hanging it up... and the webcam driver. lol
Time to see if they have a newer wheel driver. The one currently installed is from 2009 ๐
Hi Guys! I had an idea and I need a bit of guidance. I would like be able to run a powershell script that would turn on/off my ikea lamp.
The strip will be on my windows server. Is there a way to do that or is that really a bad idea?
Yikes. Come on Logitech...
No driver update in 11 years
Still newer than the installed driver, but... sigh
You have Home Assistant... why would you do that?
I do have HA for sure ๐
But it is a challenge.
I am trying to find a way to do that... but I need reading.
it seems possible like this :L https://roderickvella.wordpress.com/2020/09/09/turn-on-off-lights-based-on-pc-power-state/
Never done it
There's an API for Tradfri, so all you have to do is find somebody who's done a Powershell implementation
Or, you know, just use HA
No worries @clever mortar it is nothing agains HA. I love it!
I work for a software company and someone said the software could make coffe .... everyone laughed
I am trying to have our software to turn on the lights LOL
Then again. It's a steering wheel. Have they even been made since 2009? I bet you connect it to the MIDI port on your sound card.
just for the fun
It can clearly be done...
There you go ๐

It's also support. We don't do support in this channel.
Also, it links to the source, and there's a Python library
But, given you want Powershell, you really want...
LOL!
Here , try this:

All of the reasons Korvo hates Earth
Came across this while sniping old drivers from my system...
whistles
Now there's an oldie. That's the original AGEIA hardware accelerated PhysX driver ๐
Like, it's obviously not being loaded anymore, but it is in the driver store
Anyone else remember these odd little gems?
remember them but the tech skipped right past needing to actually buy one lol
Same. Nvidia snapped up AGEIA pretty quickly, and ported their physics engine over to CUDA
Pretty sure I only have the old driver installed because games written for the older SDK still require it, even if you're running PhysX on a GPU
Dammit Logitech...
We had those in some school computers to run CAD software.
i wish 3d printers were a thing when i went to school
Already skipped windows 10x
๐คฃ
I've chucked Windows as my main OS a bunch of times
Edit: was "just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in" Godfather gif that went on forever and ever
physx cards. makes you think what nvidia is doing with their graphics cards.
"lets just do what this physx card is doing....on our new gpu"
makes you wonder if physx itself is being severely crippled on the card or if the gpu is taking a perf hit with it vs. what it could have been without physx being implemented.
lots o hypotheticals with that imo. but shrugs
im buying an amd card whenever i can get a 6800xt for a decent price. until then rocking old cards.
Nice picture of a chair, with no raccoon on it whatsoever
The chair is something else too?
200% Stealth Cascade
lolz
Depends on which generation of graphics card we're talking about. Running rendering + compute on the same GPU at the same time requires context switching, which used to come with a pretty hefty performance hit on older architectures
Nvidia massively improved context switching performance with Maxwell, which made running graphics + physics on the same GPU a much better option
Prior to that, your best bet was probably running a second GPU dedicated to PhysX. That cuts out context switching entirely, because you have one GPU rendering full-time, while another runs compute full-time
I used to run a GTX 780 Ti with a GTX 750 Ti dedicated to PhysX. The 750 Ti became entirely superfluous as soon as I upgraded to a 980 Ti.
"Nvidia massively improved context switching performance" what exactly does that mean?
@last cedar why so nervous?
Nervous because of lack of doormats @bitter pawn
nods
The coding train is still, to this very day, grossly underrated
You spelled 'overrated' wrong.
change my mind
So... I've watched videos and read articles and I'm clearly missing something RE: Mqtt...
programmatically? @chilly nymph
Advantageously
If its homeassistant & an esp, eaphome all the way
I don't use Mqtt but know basically everyone does, so I'm looking into esp devices and would set up a broker
all my esp's use esphome
But am reading into Mqtt to understand it. It's all over tcp anyway, no?
Mqtt is good if your doing something that should be done client side imo. Like polling a prox sensor every 100 ms and doing an automation
And is there an advantage to using your broker to handle zwave or ZigBee?
never looked into it, but should be. think you should experiment around with python. It looks dead simple to implement
unsure. Not the right person to ask
Mqtt sure gives you all the flexibility
No worries. This most recent Mqtt curiosity was triggered by a post I saw by someone saying zwavejs2mqtt was more fully featured than zwavejs
Yeah I really need to look into more esp devices
I loaded up on wyze cams at home Depot for $5 each
Need to find time to flash them with the rtsp firmware and then set up that server
cool
Also need to find time to fight with Arlo again lol
No fun
Yea. New sonoff's have bloody tiny smd sized pins
Those are another thing I need to get into
iv got mine between between the plug & router
as a last resort nuke the network type deal
With the new house, the fyrtur aren't going to work
Are you decking out the house?
Context switching is the process of pausing and storing the state of one thread (so that it may be resumed later), in order to execute a different thread on the same execution unit. There is overhead associated with pausing / caching / resuming threads, so usually you want to avoid context switches wherever possible.
Nvidia cards prior to Maxwell did not support async compute, so they were forced to constantly context switch between rendering and running compute (in this case, rendering game graphics while also running PhysX on top of CUDA) when you asked them to run graphics and PhysX on the same GPU at the same time.
Maxwell and later have support for asynchronous compute, which allows the GPU to dedicate resources to run GPU compute in parallel, without the constant context switching.
In general, this means popping in a card dedicated to hardware accelerated physics isn't necessary if you have a GTX 900 series card, or newer.
Eh, i think the introduction of hardware accelerated physics was an example to the contrary. Hardware really wasn't ready for it for multiple generations...
Like, hardware accelerated physics initially came out for the 8000 series, and didn't really get good hardware support until the 900 series, 8 generations later...
yet no games really utilized it. at best gpu advances helped make shitty coded games run a little less shitty but thats about it
I don't know if decking out the house is the right way to describe it, but we bought a new house and am trying to decide which windows should have automated shades before buying any shades
I'd rather not spend money twice if I see avoid it
Yeah, because the hardware wasn't there for it...
You literally had to install an entire second GPU to avoid tanking your performance, because async compute wouldn't be a thing for 8 generations
Imma chalk lack of adoption up to the hardware not being ready for the software, on that one
That wasn't the game, that's anything that forces a context switch on a pre-maxwell Nvidia GPU...
The same code runs just fine on modern GPUs that can run compute in parallel with rendering.
that whole sli/crossfire phase was literally due to people wanting to squeeze as much fps as possible out of games that were designed for one but was coded like ass
Oh, I'm not talking about SLI
Dedicated a GPU for physics does not require SLI
Case in point, I used to run a 780 Ti with a 750 Ti dedicated for physics...
Can't SLI those. lol
just saying, there hasn't been a single game released that required hardware that wasn't invented yet.. every instance of shitty performance boiled down to ass programming.
gpu advances set the trend
I'd argue both hardware accelerated physics and ray tracing needed hardware that did not exist at their inception
Raytracing is an even longer-standing example, honestly
Games haven't been able to run that in real-time until recently. The RTX 2000 series can literally only do it thanks to AI-based denoising and upscaling, they rarely ever raytrace at full screen-resolution
The RTX 3000 series is arguably the first to be able to run raytracing in real time properly
Another example is rtx. Disregarding the shitty marketing & obv upselling, the hardware really wasnt ready for rtx/pathtracing
And for hardware accelerated physics, they (Ageia) literally invented dedicated hardware to run the damn thing, because it didn't exist... and while Nvidia was able to port PhysX to CUDA, it didn't run well for 8 full generations of hardware due to limitations of Nvidia's GPU compute implementation.
Getting a new place is the holy grail of setting up a from the ground up smart home imo. You can start integrating everything without worrying about old stuff
Lol
nabu casa has been a life saver because my free time has been less than 5 minutes per month it would seem
Wait until proper pathtracing accelerators hit the market and devs start implementing it in brand new games at a core level.
and I'll be honest...at my old place I integrated without nabu casa...but I think I'm going to keep the sub going because 1. I like to at least provide a bit of monetary support and 2. it just works
The one thing I need to do though is set up an automated reboot (I haven't yet) of the machine because HA likes to crash every couple weeks
still operates, just isn't accessible
am i missing something or is nabucasa just a substitute for a vpn?
@crisp sapphire It also allows for much easier integration with voice assistants (Alexa, Google Home, etc) and IFTTT
slightly more, but everything available in nabu casa can easily be done without it
Ah
I just run wireguard on another pi
I mean I also have openvpn running
Switch to wg man
yeah?
I'm getting tired of the AlexaMediaPlayer integration breaking after every update. Thinking about going with Nabu Casa just for a solid Alexa experience
@subtle pasture I think I'm doing it wrong, I manually integrated google home and alexa...but also use nabu casa lol
i seem to be the only one who haa avoided assistants for this long
My primary reason for subbing to nabu casa was to provide support. But I also needed a quick and easy way to access HA from outside and hadn't set up the vpn yet
@crisp sapphire That's ok. IMO the best use of HA is not voice control, but automations. Manual control is only a secondary need
Yeah, I'm running OpenVPN right now as well. Will be switching to Wireguard as soon as pfSense gets its shit together
Yeah...moving my pfsense box to the new place is going to be a project
Next week is the final "integration" of the two homes, so it will be interesting
@subtle pasture
@chilly nymph 75% of my Alexa usage is having her notify my of things, rather than me issuing commands through her
Tell me about it
My TTS via alexamediaplayer has been broken for a while
So maybe I should actually try to use what nabu casa offers
ik the feel
Going from 192. to 10. Has me stressed months in advance
Some of the devices are gonna be a mega pain to reconf
No, that's not the issue. The issue is I decided to use the gateway provided by fios at the new place "in the interim" while I had two places. I initially was going to set up a new box here but got bogged down and never had the time
But do have a separate subnet on the gateway for my iot devices and all that stuff
Did you really need an /8 block of internal IPv4 addresses?
But now that I'm moving everything over, I basically need to rebuild the entire thing and set up the whitelist/"new" devices with static ip's, etc.
I thought having 6 months to move was going to be easier. I swear it's actually harder.
Because everything is "I have time to get that done" and never actually have time.
my entire setup is gonna be so hyper overkill that a /8 mask is arguably the least overkill. Im talking enterprise setup in a 2 bedroom apartment
but then again, im always like that.
the procrastination monkey. If you get the reference.
How many people live in this 2 bedroom apartment
Literally not procrastination, I've been doing almost nothing but sleep outside of working for the last 6 months
Well im currently living at home but planning on moving out soon. Bringing all the enterprise crap with me, ofc.
but for now. Me & mom
I clocked 95 hours at work this week
sounds like a death sentence
That's not normal though. It's usually closet to 60. But I have next week as a vacation week
Well, good news is I got approval to hire two more people
ah, the good ol keel & dump. Overwork your employees to death right before their vacation
Yeah this is what I mean. I find there is an inverse relationship between number of people in the home and time to actually set stuff up
I have 3 kids under 8
Well the company didn't "make" me do it, it's just a really bad time at work from a workload perspective and the work needs to get done
Lol@manage. I survive.
you forgot the "?"
I'm excited for next week, maybe I'll have time to install some switches
Do you get a cut of the profit?
i dont wanna kill your spirits, but you'll probably sleep through the entire thing
thats how it goes
Nah. The wife gets upset if I sleep past 8.
usually id say if you have to work 95 hours
that means you suck at delegation as a manager, or you simply dont have enough people, which you need to be advocating for, also meaning you suck as a manager.
but i dont know all the ins and outs of your situation
letting go is a really hard thing to do in this field. because well....trust is a hard thing to get in this field
regardless i hope your situation improves because 90+ hr work weeks suck
for that, i blame @last cedar for stealing your welcome mat.
90 is low I thought ๐ค
90 hr work week is low? lmao
Isn't it the norm?
norm is 40 in the US
only for weirdo's who spend most of thier life on planes and buying audio equipment
Even without all that what can you do in 40 hours.
I thought you suppose to count hours after you retire.๐ค
so your banking everything on not getting hit by a bus before retirement?
put me in your will please
Lol. Will is already done. Goes to animal shelter
Finally amazon did it with tomorrow war. ATMOS track is mind blowing.
was a good movie, course like most movies these days shit gets real convenient in the end
You are so mean
Good afternoon
Imagine thinking 90 hour weeks are normal ๐คฏ
I wish there were more non-dumb areas.
I have that sticker in my workshop. It's a fancier version though: https://www.etsy.com/au/shop/AvEwerkz
Is an SSID with a space in it a bad idea for 'smart home' devices?
yeah
eSSIDs are fun. 0-32bytes iirc. No other restrictions. Only unsure about the max byte size
I dont know what those are.
the one's you are used to that are configurable. There's other SSIDs, but they only matter to tech people
Oh ok ๐
166 more people in the queue for the RyanAir chat support
When I started 75 minutes ago it was 785

Underscore!!

Yeah, thinking thatโs the safer option.
Just got a new ap and want to put my smart home stuff on their own SSID that gets no internet.

Docker container names!
:probsS:
oh right
D':
my containers have useful names
but my normal hosts all get their hostnames from characters from nintendo first party games
At the univesity chair we had a couple that were named after prisons
Hah
which started after a cooperation with a prison. Which then had alcatraz in their network
Snake case? ๐คข Camel case ftw.,
I liked farting_raccoon more tbh @glacial knot
yea, I think that was a good one
Imagine not having time to imagine about 90 hour weeks. ๐
Oh, I have plenty of time. Thanks to not working 90 hours weeks...
Why would anyone be thankful for not working ๐
I can't tell if you're being serious.
he's not sonoma, so I'd wager he isn't
Maybe. Can't tell with some people ๐ I know some people love working hard.
Personally, once I've done my 40 hours, I cba with more...
Even a 40 hour week feels like a slog.
tbh. if it's <=40h for contracted/salaried work and then 40 or so for personal freelance or company building stuff I get it
but 95h for my employer? yea, no. Even if I didn't have to break multiple laws to do that
My new employer thinks they're being sneaky putting a clause in my contract to say that I opt out of the 48 hour per week limit. Doubt it'll ever matter but I don't think it'd hold up if they tried. In the UK, I'm pretty sure we have to volunteer to opt out, not just have it bundled with all the other terms of employment.
But at the same time... I'm joining a startup, so I know there could be busy weeks. I won't piss them off during my probation period by saying I won't put in the hours ๐
Never thought of work as work.
yea, the 40h/w is legal max here. though it's some "for extended amount of time" verbiage for going over
This is why I said I fortunately got approval for two more people...
You're lucky if you have a job that doesn't feel like one. I love what I do but it's still a job and I still want to switch off at the end of the day.
I'd say I'm somewhere in between, personally. I "like" what I do in that I'm good at it and I like to teach people
Also, the other thing right now @bitter pawn is that we are (unfortunately) going through several major changes at my company, so every project I'm on is "temporary," and all of my employees right now are at the junior level. I'm training them up nicely and they're intelligent, they just don't have the experience under their belts for what comes their way. The approval I got for the two roles I"m hiring for now will at least allow me to bring people in with a few years of experience, but it'll still be at more of a junior level (2-5 years of experience). TBH it is both awesome and sucks because 1. it's very rewarding but 2. very draining.
2-5 years counts as junior in your profession? ๐ฎ
Yes
I'd been doing my job for 3 years and got a 'senior' role for my next gig ๐
Depending on where you worked, I guess
What industry are you in?
Finance
More specifically commercial lending
So basically for each of my underwriters, they learn a lot about each business and only really understand that particular sector after doing several loans for it
But if that type of borrower only comes in a couple times per year, it doesn't give you the opportunity to really learn it quickly
Yeah, that makes sense. For me, it's just about training my brain to solve problems... for you, it's knowing your sector inside out.
To some degree...for instance, before this year, I had actually never had to do anything with solar. But I'm doing a lot of solar financing now
But I was able to apply the last decade and a half of knowledge from other stuff to solar. So at some point, it no longer matters what the experience you have is because you've aggregated 10+ years of related experience
oh, if I include books I read and other stuff I do that's related and helps with my job I probably go 80ish hours most weeks in the end. Just not much of actual code for the employer
Commercial lending process can be a whole lot better in 2021. Unfortunately it is not.
Also, not sure if you are familiar with the PPP program, but it's a covid response program that I ended up leading at my bank...which means I had to write bots to scrape OCR data off applications and tie into the SBA API
So just a lot of random stuff that I got pulled into this year
I don't disagree. But (being ignorant of your experience in the field), it may be different things than you are thinking. Machine learning is still horrendous at underwriting
But the learning you're doing is because you want to do it. I'm sure you could find time during the day if it only applied to the day job.
And a large part of lending is the "character" piece, which bots can't pick up on
I do all sorts of learning at home because it interests me. If it benefits my work too, that's a bonus.
As well as understanding borrower's capacity
@chilly nymph I agree. I was specifically talking about underwriting.
That said, I've automated as much of the underwriting as I can at this point -- the training part is more in helping my people to understand what the data actually means
during work hours? no chance :/ But yea, I wouldn't spend the time learning and reading into stuff if I wasn't interested in it.
Some of it only helps me for my job, but I like ideas and building things ๐
Gonna disappear for a bit again -- heading to the old house to try to finish up packing. Wish me luck because there's no way I'm going to be done today which is the day I need to be done by lol
Good luck with the move.
lol thanks
@deft pewter been on my own since 99 so my perspective might be different on work ๐
I get that. I'm not the most sociable person but I still have enough of a personal life that I'd like to have some time dedicated to it.
We're all different ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Yes we are all different. ๐
Hardest thing for me is to draw the line between personal and work. Thankfully I have an understanding wife. ๐
a house is clearly necessary to keep myself at full produciton capacity. I should be able to get a tax writeoff!
wishes that worked
I think I annoy my wife with how much time I'll spend at my PC even outside of work. Probably need to take her out more often ๐
Luckily I do take my wife on work trips if that counts as taking her out.
well, gotta think more about snmp in HA again...
In a couple of weeks, we'll be taking our first trip since Corona struck. Feels like forever.
And even then, it'll only be domestic. Spending a couple of nights away for my birthday ๐
Been trying to plan international travel but everything is up in the air. Don't know how restrictions will work out in September
Yeah, it's tough. We've been talking about going to Germany/Austria for the Christmas markets for a while. We want to do it this year while friends are still working over there but don't know if it's worth booking anything yet. At least it sounds like the Germans are no longer afraid of us Delta-infected Brits... because they have Delta there too now ๐
Saw Germany open up. Want to do scotland again and head to Egypt.
Scotland might be okay by then. Good luck with Africa.
The disparity in the number of vaccines countries are getting is nuts.
That's what I am thinking. Wife wants to do Outlander tour lol. Egypt for street food.
BTW Austria is beautiful, specially the long drives.
I doubt Germany's going to stay open for long tbh.
Watch out for vacation time here with spread of delta variant.
Eh... they're talking about only letting vaccinated people in. I know there's still a chance of them transmitting it but it's far lower than unvaccinated people.
And to be honest, everywhere needs to start making concessions. Closed borders and a ruined travel industry help no-one.
The world can't stay shut down
Supply chains are fucked and we're literally going to run out of food
Eh. It's not quite that dramatic but I get your point.
The cure is becoming worse than the poison
No, it really is
I do a fair amount of logistics work.
No-one's going to let anywhere run out of food. We saw all the panic buying last year... nothing happened.
The biggest hit to logistics lately has been that dumbass boat captain in the Suez canal, not Corona.
Food, where in the US?
Nah, first world countries will be hit, but not as hard as the outliers
Countries like India, and the continent of Africa? They're gonna get turbo fucked
Don't know much about international food situation but don't think it will be that dire
Speciality food yes but bare bones I doubt
I mean as long as the world keeps reopening we'll be fine
I'm just saying we can't afford another lock down
Hopefully most will get the vaccination in days to come.
Here they started calling to make appointments, pushing as much as they can.
Yeah I'm not a fan of the vaccine ATM. I don't like experimental medical procedures.
I mean once the technology and the vaccine itself is actually FDA approved I'll be first in line
But like... that shit alters your body forever.
Plus I already had covid and it didn't do shit to me so I'm not in a rush
get J&J then
Think the new esphome update bricked the 01's
Trying to reflash S20, it aint working for shit
And it even ses that Board_flash_mode: dout is deprecated
And ofc, after i say that it works. Technology 101, human error 100
Yes, there are food supply chain issues, but most of us won't feel it as hard from an availability perspective because most of it is just directly reflected in modest price increases, in first world countries. In the others, there's a concern of actual availability.
There have been other significant hits in commodity availability in worldwide trade, which has caused a very strange inflation situation. Last month's US inflation was tagged around 4%, which btw is very high, but it's also misleading because it's an average, which includes some negative price migration --one of which is lumber, which dropped in price by 40% but is still almost 4x 2020 prices
Lumber has been very good to me ๐
Anyone have any ideas why my Windows 10 machine suddenly fails to reach my DNS server, while my other devices have no issues? ๐ค
I can reach port 53 on my server but Windows still claims it's unavailable.
Static DNS?
What do you mean by static? I've entered the IP of the server hosting the DNS service into the adaptor settings. It's worked for months until today.
So static DNS. That's strange.
Yeah. So odd that it's just stopped. I've got AdGuard Home running on an NUC for ad blocking and DNS rewrites. My phone works fine, my PC stopped working.
I don't think there's been a dodgy Windows update or anything.
I can get into AGH via the IP:port, so it's not that it's blocked a client.
Running pihole for some vlans never encountered intermittent DNS issues. When you lose DNS how about ping to DNS host?
Host is up, I'm SSH'd in for other stuff. Can even telnet to port 53.
So ADH is a VM in NUC?
Docker container but yeah
BTW I would run a -t from windows machine to host and check response when you have dns Vs loss
continuous ping
I never lose access to the host. SSH session remains live throughout and the web portal is accessible throughout. DNS is 100% inaccessible from the Windows machine.
I can set up a local redirect in hosts and access services that way. I just don't want to, since I'm also using AGH for ad blocking.
Did you try add/remove lan driver on win
Yup
Yeah, I'm stumped on this one ๐
can you get to it with dig or nslookup?
Aren't they for external stuff? This is private and only accessible within my network
Do you have internal DNS?
you can specify a server
It'll default to your default DNS server, but if you just type nslookup you get a shell of sorts
server xxxx
I hate myself... I probably fixed this hours ago but at least running nslookup highlighted that I had a typo in my DNS settings now...
Fixed it, everything's back up. Still no idea what caused the outage in the first place.
lol
Now to figure out whatever else went wrong earlier. Can't connect to my MQTT server either (by IP address)
And sorted... Only wasted a whole afternoon on this nonsense.
it's always DNS

That's a given right ?
I'm curious if that actually breaks any laws...
Because people put obnoxious spoilers on their cars all the damn time
of course. it's an unstable hazard.
sat dishes and antennas for cars are specially designed for highway wind etc, that's why they look diffrent then home shit lol
i wish the 3m command strip velcro things weren't such trash. such a nifty thing
That appears to be on the front of the car though
Iโd say it was obscuring the driverโs view a fair bit
The article goes into that
Thatโs where the โonly when making a right turnโ quote came from
Would have made more sense on the roof anyway
But it gets internet though. No issue
And if there's internet, the AI can drive just fine. No idea why the driver needs to see.
I think it was more a problem of too much gain on those government issued microchips I'm hearing all the fuss about... too attention-grabbing
Discord stickers has got to be one of the most useless additions in a while ๐ค
It already has custom emojies...

people wanted bigger than 128x128 images so they made stickers and put them behind a pay wall
@subtle pasture, do I remember correctly that you are running pfsense on a rack server?
Since I decided to start from scratch at my new place, I'm considering my options and actually thinking about going with one of the prebuilt netgate products, just to reduce my power consumption
I have an old SFF running opnsense
I was considering a small form factor as well
20 watts covers the SFF with the quad NIC, my modem, Unifi AC lite and a 8 port switch
So I'm not sure the cost of a 1u router board would pay off
That's an intel i7 4th gen and 8GB ram as well
My server runs at 120w though :(
That is with 2 x nvme, 4 x DIMMs and 8 x 5400rpm and a 1060 card as well though
And a quad NIC
Raid1
1: nvme is neglible cost compared to sata ssd
2: no sata ports, power supply ports
3: the drives were cheap, so raid1 gives me some measure of protection against it
Well zfs mirror to be exact
Plus I also get 2x read speed
If the price was negligible, I get it. I haven't bought drives in over a year, but when I was building my last box, there was a material difference in cost
Just wait until you see the price of hard drives now ๐ข
Frigging miners have to ruin everything.
I got my 1TB SSDs for 90โฌ, which isn't exactly higher than the history graph shows
It's running on dedicated hardware, though it's not mounted in my server rack
Got it. Not sure why I thought you had it on a rack mount
Amazon.com: Protectli Vault 4 Port, Firewall Micro Appliance/Mini PC - Intel Quad Core, AES-NI, 8GB RAM, 120GB mSATA SSD: Computers & Accessories
Runs great on that ^
Those are the gold standard for pf or opn machines
If you don't need or want rack mount
nah, I'll stay with my apu2e4
