Haha. Of course they should wait in line. Nothing weird about that.

#

Government business can be conducted via Zoom. Simple.

clear ferry
#

Yes, I for once agree with the health minister

#

I did not when he (as a gay man) refused to accept a new law that would make it easier for surrogacy and egg donation, because that was unnatural wtf

deft pewter
#

I can see his perspective with that still. A lot of cultures place strong emphasis on 'normal' families. Things are changing but very slowly.

glacial knot

worldly axle
#

Discord is 13+

deft pewter
#

Discord is way too lax on keeping out children. Should be 18+ with actual age verification.

worldly axle
#

That's not nice

deft pewter
#

If I wanted to use a site that allows kids, I'd go use Habbo Hotel or whatever they play now.

#

Isn't Twitch also 13+? And they have 'hot tub streams'... 🤦‍♂️

worldly axle
#

U get a warning when you enter some streams

#

On twitch

deft pewter
#

Oh my, a warning? No-one will ever click through that and pretend they'd old enough.

worldly axle
#

That's just how internet works

clear ferry
#

I never did that 30 years ago while surfing porn, I promise @deft pewter

deft pewter
#

I also never did that.

deft pewter
#

Lax age validation is also how these 'cam sites' end up with under 18's doing the streaming, not just the watching. It's vile.

Yay! I just fixed an old Kenwood cassette player that would suddenly stop playing!

Turned out to be the lever detecting the tape being too weak.

How do you cope with skin effect? @low harness

#

They don't seem to use more than 240mm2 here in Sweden (above ground)

low harness
#

See how the conductors seem to be made from triangular segmenst?

#

In each of those segments, the wires wrap around, so over a few meters the outermost wires - where the skin effect push the electrons, will be the innermost.

clear ferry
#

Wth happened there

#

Go home discord

#

You are drunk

last cedar
low harness
#

You can further decrease the skin effect by painting some of the individual wires, to make them less conductive cross-wise.

#

That's an AC three phase power cable. Yes. It's not one of ours, so I can't really tell. But from the insulation thickness I'd guess 240-350 kV or so.

last cedar
#

Cool

#

What about voltage drop :P

#

How long do these run?

#

Step up voltage at destination?

low harness
#

For AC cables, you'll have a problem with capacitive losses, so it's not really economically viable for more than 50 edit: a few hundred km or so. High voltage DC cables can be pretty much of arbitrary length, though. There's ongoing work to put down some cables between Australia and Asia.

#

(in the planning phase)

last cedar
#

Wow, that would be a long run

#

I am kinda glad I only deal with simple, small stuff :D

deft pewter
#

I'm surprised these cables don't leak. You don't want all that electricity getting out into the ocean.

last cedar
#

How do you think electric eels are made? @deft pewter

low harness
#

Know the cheapest way to do this? For DC power transfer, you can get away with a single conductor. For the return, you just put an electrode into the sea at either end and let the electrons find their way back themselves.

I need to verify with some Belgians

#

Not like the south African collegue I attended training with, his car was usually stolen 3 times a year

glacial knot
#

sounds like an insurance nightmare

forest edge
#

leaving the windows down, doors unlock and a push button start instead of needing a key usually does that

glacial knot
#

your push button starts work without your key in the car?

forest edge
#

I had watched a documentary the other night about how almost all foreign(to usa) cars would able to be unlocked and started by the same key from another similar year vehicle of the same brand. after the lock and ignition cylinders wore down enough the key would only have to be a vague similarity to the original for it to work

forest edge
glacial knot
#

I'm not sure what you are talking about now o.0

#

the security of car keys has long been electric. The physical part of most car locks is easy to pick
The difference is only the distance they key's allowed to be from the receiver

forest edge
#

it's not uncommon for people who live near deserts to just skip needing a key to start the vehicle for several reasons

clear ferry
#

We didn't even use to lock cars or house doors when I grew up

#

Started doing that around ... 2001

#

Mostly due to junkies though

clear ferry
#

The first few gens of keys could be programmed pretty easy today, with the right software, but still need to be cut

#

Second gen is definitely harder to program

#

And modern ones require the car to be synced to electronics by the shop

forest edge
#

not all german cars.. the key replacement cost would be stupid on a vehicle that wasn't considered luxury

clear ferry

They started with programmed keys at least on the golf mk4

forest edge

heck even the one's we looked at before the bought the woman's 19' Subaru didn't have special keys

clear ferry
#

Maybe even mid life 3s

forest edge
#

they were special in terms of the buttons being on the key etc

#

but they didn't have the chip on the key

#

it's one thing to make those for cars that warrent it, dumb to put it on minivans etc lol

#

now today, maybe they all are like that. i dunno

#

don't remember kia or any of the shit we looked at it aside from a few having anything special beyond the fob being part of the key

#

I do remember the one's we had looked at tho and the 700+ for a key replacement lol

#

one of them was over a grand for the key alone

#

I think that is stupid

#

if someone wants to steal the car the tow truck could care less about a fancy key lol

#

like the same concept as expensive door deadbolts

clear ferry
#

Their definitely is a chip in the key in those old ones

#

That need to be paired to the immobilizer

#

A key replacement on my Audi 08 was about $700, on my Volvo I think it is $450

#

The Korean and Japanese cars were definitely later with that tech

#

My mom's 99 Avensis doesn't even have pairing, just filing

The majority of Australians disagree with you

#

No one wants to suffer for austerity, when it's the housing codes that need to change

#

Plus temps alone are only one part of comfort

dawn prawn
#

That last bits true

hushed basalt
#

Builders shouldn't be allowed to do onsite assembly windows with 3mm glass and gaskets off a roll

dawn prawn
#

However even in shit holes where it’s 40+ for months on end, there isn’t any building code which will accomodate for that without smashing the back end out of an ac unit 24/7

hushed basalt
#

You can't say it makes sense that only slightly better building codes could mean 50-75% less fuel consumption for household, but we don't do it

dawn prawn
#

People want cheap houses

hushed basalt
#

So do americans and canadians and europeans

#

But they have codes

dawn prawn

The majority of Australians cannot afford top tier insulation and glass

hushed basalt
#

Nonsense

#

It's expensive because it's novel

dawn prawn
#

Dude, American homes have walls made out of fucking MDF. They’re built so poorly

hushed basalt
#

If it was statutory it would be a lot cheaper

#

They still have blower door ratings

dawn prawn
#

It’s expensive because better = more $ and we live in a capitalist society

hushed basalt

I promise you double glazed windows would cost a fraction of what they did here if they were standard

clear ferry
dawn prawn
hushed basalt

Maybe 5000 units vs 200 000 units a year?

#

For a city like Perth

#

Economy of scales is a thing

#

@clear ferry I would ask you what windows cost but you're Norway so your pricing is all fucked

dawn prawn
#

Just secede from the rest of us already 😉

hushed basalt
#

Australia builds about half a million homes every year

#

Are you seriously telling me if double glazed windows were bring spat out like that they wouldn't become dramatically cheaper

#

That's like 5-10 million windows a year

dawn prawn
#

I doubt dramatically. Cheaper yes, but they’d put a premium on the price of building a home which in turn puts those trying to save for a home behind the 8 ball once again whilst already battling the price hikes thanks to ‘investors’ in China

#

There’s a lot of influences on the cost of building / buying a home and this would just be another that increases it. Until we fuck off foreign investors, it will be like that for a long time.

A good quality window costs about 4 days wage for me

#

For the actual window, not for installation and shipping and stuff. Thinking one of those 3 glass or 2+1 with a low U value

#

Gonna have to replace them on house, thinking 1 side at a time, after I add extra insulation and redo the cladding

#

Can move them 70mm futher out if I put 70mm insulation, hence getting new ones

#

Will be able to heat house with 1 candle

hushed basalt

I want to replace the window in our bedroom

#

I suspect it could be a $10k+ affair though

hushed basalt

There is a no such thing as a coincidence

they can't sell solar in my state

last cedar
#

I don't like the idea of having a lot of solar

#

That can't be used when the grid is out

last dirge
#

so..get one that can

last cedar
#

I believe there have been rules about it for a while so you don't end up killing people working on the lines with backfeed

last dirge
#

yeah, there are disconnects to prevent that

last cedar
#

I guess having a large relay that releases grid when the mains fails and then it just carries on

#

Not actually sure how it works in practise though

last dirge
#

it's a transfer switch that disconnects the mains and then powers the inverter's input (for DC systems)

last cedar
#

Solar would be a nice long term goal of mine, would be able to take panels with me when I get a bigger container

#

Aha, fair enough

#

And probably manual reset?

last dirge
#

it's more gear for microinverter setups

#

but essentially the same concept

last cedar
#

So it doesn't just pop back on if they send a short test voltage or something

last dirge
#

if it can detect a grid outage to turn on, it can detect the grid's there to turn back off

#

there's usually a heartbeat check

#

it makes sure the grid is available for X amount of time before transferring back

last cedar
#

When I heard about not being able to use the solar in mains failure it seemed very very silly

forest edge
#

that part is generally installed by the power company

last dirge
#

that part is generally NOT installed by the power company

#

they don't touch anything past the meter

#

they won't let you produce solar power until you've passed your inspection

forest edge
#

must vary by state

#

maybe it's only backfeed switches that fall under that.. i hate looking up code

Couple of Yamaha RX-V685 here. Integrates really well with HA.

hushed basalt
#

I think I've given up on trying to do AVR

#

I need one that needs a separate downmixed stereo AV output, or a toslink out

#

That works on ARC as well as inputs

young sigil
#

You can choose the ARC source on the Yamaha. Toslink or HDMI.

bitter zinc
#

Ok cool

#

My current AVR doesn’t support Arc, so when I use the volume buttons on my tv remote they don’t work. I have to walk over to my closet to turn up and down the volume

#

I’m hoping buying a new receiver will make it so I can just use a slider on my app

#

I was thinking of going Dolby atmos but it’s so expensive👀

hushed basalt
#

So a normal AVR that does ARC, de-embedding passthrough hdmi etc,

#

Putting that audio to the speakers

#

While simultaneously downmixing that to a stereo output

#

Spdif would also work

young sigil
#

It has a line level aux stereo output for zone 2. Which can use it's own input source or follow the main zone.

#

If you're only using 5.1 there is also a second amplified stereo zone that can use an independent source or follow the main zone.

#

Unfortunately it looks like the 685 is discontinued. Not sure what the replacement is.

#

The replacement is the RX-V6A

#

Both zones are independently controllable in HA.

hushed basalt
#

I'll have to do some digging to see what the newer equivalent model is

Haven't got a projector for our theatre yet though so it's kinda moot

Maybe running pihole or other Docker containers with very low requirements. This looks like an ideal set and forget storage server. Since it's essentially 12 TB of capacity for 70 EUR, I can survive the penalties that'd come with SMR drives.

NAS no

thorny heron

Plex can be used locally! You just access the ip of the server and you got an interface

Example: http://192.168.0.21:32400/web/index.html This would take you to the Plex interface

I use my NAS as a backup DNS server and for backups of the main Proxmox server

But it still accesses their servers to pull info about shows and movies. Plus it still needs to verify the licence for HW transcoding. At least that's what I figured from the forums.

tidal bronze

No fires, only rabbits

static schooner
#

That rabbit looks like it wants to start a fire...

forest edge
#

that rabbit was running away from the approaching fire

tidal bronze

They do start fires with all the strawberry trees. 😆

Hello , im new here ^^

#

I've been playing around with HA for 1-2 months now. Thought I might join the community and learn the ins and outs even faster.

dawn totem
#

Ended up with a shopping-spree for sensors 😅

glacial knot
#

That happens

#

and then they sit in a box for a month, until there's enough motivation to install them all D:

clear ferry
#

A month?

#

I have two year old stuff still waiting

dawn totem
#

oh no, i bought them with a plan and hooked everything up as soon i got it. However tinkering that i thought out my automations going wrong cuz a flaw in my thinking.

clever mortar
#

Don't forget the stuff you buy, and then discover are utter crap, so you throw them in the box to gather dust...

glacial knot
#

everything Tuya so far for me...

#

well, the 2 times I tried at least

clever mortar
#

Zigbee FTW

glacial knot
#

oh, they are zigbee. Just bad devices

dawn totem
#

Ok yea that - i got some china stuff - which turned out to be totally worthless 😅 - lucky it was cheap but still.

clever mortar
#

Well, yes 😂

dawn totem
#

mh im scared to buy my first ESP32 board. Got 0 experience.

clever mortar

Worst case, you let the magic smoke out

glacial knot
#

And: they are cheap

dawn totem
#

just want to make my own ip-spy-cam. in a flowerpot haha

#

but battery operated might be a challenge

glacial knot
#

I hope that's not for the AirBnB bathroom D:

#

Just throw in an USB power bank and don't worry about the battery

dawn totem
#

you got a point there. whats the worst thing that could happen indeed 🤔

dusky plank

dawn totem

I did a job at a fairly big school, alarm job. Took about 20 modules offline to redo the data com and power cable chain, had low voltage at the other end. And it didn't work after I connected it back......

#

Checked all connections from futhest to closest point

#

At the closest point (checked last) it was loose

#

🤣

#

Would have been an 8 second to fix job if I had started there

dawn totem
#

real life interrupts my workflow 😆 ... i want to type 'coffee' and it should spawn in front of me.

clever mortar

The problem is when it does, but you realise you didn't specify that it had to be in any form of container 🤪

Just a beanstalk 🤣

Popos was great for stress testing gpu blades

Only time I've ever used it

#

Mint has always been shite

#

Ubuntu is great for desktop

inner vault
#

I wouldn't use Debian or CentOS for desktop linux

deft pewter
#

Desktop Linux? 😂

#

Linux for servers. Windows for desktop. macOS for the pretentious, arty types.

Fedora is neat - there I started to like gnome

I'd recommend Chromebook before Windows to like 95% of people who "need a computer"

@last cedar Are you planning to watch Cruella?

#

If so, watch out for the 'hybrid' 😄

forest edge
#

that movie looks so dumb

deft pewter
#

I almost didn't watch if after seeing the trailer. It was actually pretty fun.

forest edge
#

shit like that is just a reminder that there is no more original creative talent making movie scripts anymore with directors able to be worth a damn

twilit rose

I watched Hobbs and Shaw last night, talk about a low effort movie

#

no idea how it has a 67% on RT

tidal bronze
forest edge

@tidal bronzeI would recommend them to make a movie about how oblivious cali's are to the shit happening around them then have them film the areas around your house on fire and people dying while you just splashed your toes in the pool

Not as bad as IMDb

@forest edge no offense, but your nick sounds like a name of one of ridiculous American car. You know, one with long hood and luggage compartment, small interior, huge V8 with small horsepower output. Oldsmobile Sonoma GTS or something like that.

but jesus christ

zoom is a nightmare

my CPU fan actually spins up, it hasn't done that in months

deft pewter

Teams has gotten a lot better. Used to be a resource hog on Mac, now I barely notice it's open.

#

If people would stop talking to me, it'd be perfect.

clear ferry

I have never noticed teams at all, both on windows and linux

clever mortar

Could be worse, could be Google Meet...

deft pewter

Yeah, I think it's just the Mac client was awful. High CPU for no reason in an earlier build.
