I have completed my upgrade from a Raspberry Pi 3 with SD card, to A Pi 4 running on an SSD, and I am loving the speed improvements. But I now have a Raspberry Pi 3 without a use. So, those of you who have done a similar migration (or those with an opinion anyway), what did you do with your Pi 3 once it was redundant for HA? I am looking for ideas, ideally related to home automation.

deft pewter
#

I'm using mine as a paperweight but I know @clear ferry uses a cluster of Pis for mission critical stuff.

acoustic cloud
#

Ooh! A cluster of Pi's sounds interesting, and a headache of nightmare proportions! But I only have the one Pi3. I have some even earlier Pi's with cameras that were given to me. I will probably use them as cameras if I can find the time to set them up. I really feel it will be a shame to consign me trusty Pi3 to dust gathering duties though.

deft pewter
#

I only use mine for running monitor, since it's small enough to be unobtrusive in the living room. Everything else runs on an NUC in my study.

They're nice toys for people learning computing and they're okay as an entry-level computer if you can't afford better... but they're underpowered compared to just about anything else.

I also have a couple of old PCs lying around, but the fans are loud enough to be annoying and the power consumption when running 24/7 is horrendous. A NUC type computer would be nice, but the Pi ticked the low cost/low power consumption boxes for me with my current budget being practically nil. Those PCs will be donated to a local school if they want them, otherwise they will go on Freecycle of some such, since they have no reasonable monetary value.

#

I just don't give a damn about the physical aspects of servers.

clever mortar
#

And mostly IMO folks shouldn't - unless it matters to their job

deft pewter
dusky plank
#

redundant systems is getting more important, doesn't matter if you're into connecting servers or services and pi's are a lot cheaper than multiple NUCs

clever mortar
#

95% of the time nobody has to care about the hardware layer. That remaining 5% of the time though is a doozy

deft pewter
#

Redundancy is fine... but cloud native lends itself well to that too. Easy to spin up load-balanced instances with failover.

clever mortar
#

If your system can't handle something like that, you're doing IT wrong

#

(or you're at home)

deft pewter
#

I don't think we have anything complex enough to care about that. Our newer stuff is AWS Lambda, so there's no VM to terminate.

clever mortar

Same principle though - it should handle stuff falling over

deft pewter

Indeed. I just don't get to play with chaosmonkey 😒

real frigate
#

Ooohhhh... I like! We use Shopify (grumble SCREW Shopify) for our public e-commerce, but we suck in all their data into our own systems. I just spent all week writing lambdas that gen graphql queries to get pretty much everything out of Shopify and stuff it into S3 buckets. Then, API GW calls other lambdas to parse and return relevant portions to internal apps.

#

I think I must have written at least 12-15 lambdas this week.

deft pewter
#

With Amazon S3 Select, you can use simple structured query language (SQL) statements to filter the contents of Amazon S3 objects and retrieve just the subset of data that you need. By using Amazon S3 Select to filter this data, you can reduce the amount of data that Amazon S3 transfers, which reduces the cost and latency to retrieve this data.

real frigate
#

ASSS... yeah, I've been slowly incorporating that into the select lambdas.

#

Personally, it was the acronym that first got me interested... because... ASSS... I mean, come on Amazon... LOL

deft pewter

I think that's why they call it S3 πŸ˜‰

It's interesting to see all the extra layers they're adding on top of S3 though. S3 Select is clever.

I can't work out how to DM people on the hass community website.

Am I just being dumb? Is it possible?

I'd like to DM this person to ask if they've got any more of those boards left, but I can't work out how.

And the company never actually does any of it, so they have these 6+ year old tickets with "we will see how this fits into our roadmap",

And eventually they solve it by just removing all the date fields from the messages

I've recently come across a 7 year old jira ticket. That I'd like to be implemented :/
