There's nothing wrong with those type of power supplies. The particular brand/model may be good or crap I have no idea.

#

But the world runs off those things

#

But they shouldn't be in the open air

Even under a couch

crisp sapphire
#

Why?

#

afaik they need ample cooling

hushed basalt
#

Because they have exposed terminals

#

And fingers should never be able to touch mains voltage

Plus there's nothing to stop stray debris coming into contact with terminals

crisp sapphire
subtle pasture

I've avoided anything new from Razer because they don't remember their RGB settings

fallow karma
#

talking about 3d print.Thats one i am most proud of :

subtle pasture
#

All of their older (Synapse 2.0) hardware DOES remember RGB settings, even with the software closed/uninstalled

crisp sapphire

Thats how my eyes percive it. No joke it lights the entire room.

subtle pasture
#

But their Synapse 3.0 gear forgets and goes rainbow-mode if you even so much as lock your session

#

Fuck that

forest edge
#

not run into any issue like that

subtle pasture
#

It's a known issue... if you ask them about it, they tell you that's how it's supposed to work

forest edge
#

well thats because the devices don't have internal memory for lighting profiles lol

subtle pasture
#

Even though their old hardware could remember RGB settings fine

#

I have an original Deathadder Chroma from 2013, configured with Synapse 2.0, and it remembers the color I set just fine

#

#

Oh, and if they start using real Cherry MX switches again... not those knockoffs

forest edge
#

quality certianly has gone down hill but I have too much razer stuff and not about to have a bunch of seperate brand apps running to pease a varity of diffrent shit lol

subtle pasture
#

I just use hardware that doesn't need apps

forest edge
#

i like macros too much for that lol

subtle pasture
#

Deathadder Chroma 2013 was configured to my liking, and now Synapse isn't used at all. Doesn't auto-start.

#

Keyboard never had an app, it has dip switches on the back to configure it

forest edge
#

macros and additional buttons/keys are a must for me

subtle pasture
#

Can program macros directly into the keyboard firmware

forest edge
#

can with this one too technically

subtle pasture
#

No need for macro software, which a lot of games don't like and may ban you for

forest edge
#

your thinking scripts

#

macros is diffrent

subtle pasture
#

Nope, both have triggered anti-cheat protection

forest edge
#

i ply a whole lot of games, not ever ran into a single issue with that

subtle pasture
#

In fact, Blizzard accidentally banned accounts because Razer Synapse was running on some systems. lol

forest edge
#

never even heard of a single issue with that

#

thats diffrent

subtle pasture
#

They literally had to un-ban a bunch of Overwatch users because they (correctly) detected Synapse 3.0 as hooking keyboard inputs

forest edge
#

that is not the same thing lol

subtle pasture
#

How is that different? It runs macros via keyboard hooks...

#

Autohotkey causes similar problems

forest edge
#

macros you cannot get complicated enough to ever need banning lol

#

autohotkey is scripts

subtle pasture
#

in-firmware macros don't require any software on the PC, and are a lot harder to detect

#

I see zero distinction between a macro and a script for this purpose

#

All of the above could be described as macros

forest edge
#

use both, you will see

subtle pasture
#

I have, no difference...

#

Hit hotkey, automated set of actions occur...

forest edge
#

it's diffrent

subtle pasture
#

How? lol

forest edge
#

again, you would have to use both in the manor you are speaking of to see

#

or should i say, try and use both lol

#

since you can't with macros

#

been using this shit since conception, i know a few things lol

subtle pasture
#

What can't you do with a macro, exactly?

#

You're making zero sense...

forest edge
#

you can't do complicated thingsd with macros

subtle pasture
#

Why not? Just add more actions, it's a script...

forest edge
#

no it's not

subtle pasture
#

They're literally interchangeable

#

A macro is just a script bound to an input. lol

forest edge
#

ugh, do us both a favor. dl the software and look at it

#

you will find real quick there is a huge diffrence

subtle pasture
#

Which software? Synapse 3.0?

forest edge
#

yes

subtle pasture
#

I've used it, you can literally have it run anything

#

Synapse 2.0 could do the same

forest edge
#

then you must be a wizard

#

able to make it do crap it cannot do

subtle pasture
#

Automation is literally the first item in my job description, so...

forest edge
#

well you magic'ing the crap out of crap gets you banned then i can understand lol

#

autohotkey you can do complex stuff with, thats why those are called scripts to begin with

subtle pasture
#

Uh, no the Blizzard incident had nothing to do what the macros that were programmed, it was the mere fact that it had a keyboard hook loaded into a library

forest edge
#

i know

#

thats why i said that was diffrent from this convo

subtle pasture
#

And it's a constant game of "whitelist the latest version or accidentally ban a bunch of users"

#

You just said use Synapse 3.0...

#

It's different now?

forest edge
#

i said a company banning the use of synapse cause of them trying to detect scripts was diffrent

subtle pasture
#

Synapse 3.0 has to hook the keyboard to detect you pushing keys to initiate a macro

forest edge
#

you use get banned for certian default mouse drivers a long time ago

subtle pasture
#

it has nothing to do weather it runs a macro or a script, the mere fact that Synapse 3.0 was in memory caused the issue

#

And it has to be running with a keyboard hook, because it can't detect you inputs otherwise

forest edge
#

the blizard ban was just from incompetent devs

subtle pasture
#

I mean, they correctly detected a keyboard hook, which is often used to cheat...

forest edge
#

omg

subtle pasture
#

?

forest edge
#

macro is more like one of those water glass bopper things just pushing a button over and over

#

a script is like an android sittin in your chair

subtle pasture
#

That's just a really short script

forest edge
#

see the diffrence?

subtle pasture
#

Nope

I have a weird off topic... but also kind of on topic question to pose...
First off, I love everything that has to do with Home Assistant. From the simple coding, node red, problem solving, out of the box thinking, etc.
I also love messing around with anything involving technology including messing with my homelab, setting up my network, playing around with docker in unraid, etc.
Say I'm in a career that has nothing to do with the above; and although I wanted to go into something tech based in university when I was a kid, I ended up going into something public facing because I'm a pretty good public speaker.
Say I wanted to make a complete life change and get into tech in some way but have no idea which way to go since there is so much to choose from.
From the (very little) information above, would anyone have any idea what someone like me would both enjoy and potentially be good at?

Weird question, I know. But in my part of the world, we just went into a complete lockdown and I'm starting to have these considerations even more than I ever have.

forest edge
#

why not just make a dummy sensor in HA with a permanent state of "Cold"?

last cedar
#

That is a great idea tbh

#

I will do some testing, but looking at a different alarm system now. Seems that someone made an integration for a system we have available for a good price. Would still use the one I thought for door entry, but use a seperate alarm that can integrate with HA.

#

There sirens have the ability to report temperature too, by the looks of things

forest edge
#

why would sirens report temp

#

thats a weird addition

cedar chasm
#

Maybe applying heat is a common tamper-method?

cedar chasm
#

That would work

last cedar
#

Just because "everyone" has a siren and it is a nice feature to have. Might alternativly be in the keypad.

#

But dsc alarms for example, you buy a seperate sensor for it

forest edge
#

for what purpose

#

so that you can tell if it it a fire vs a thermal nuclear explosion?

last cedar
#

I am also not sure if multiple sirens can give multiple temperature values, I am planning on having 2 sirens (one on each floor) with a possible 3rd in loft

#

No. Just so you cana look at the app and see how warm it is at home :)

forest edge
#

silly addition

last cedar
#

It is like a zigbee temp sensor basically

forest edge
#

fire sensors are generally placed much higher than a person so the temps wouldn't really do you much good

last cedar
#

They want it to be a bit of an all in 1 system it seems

#

No, it is just a temp sensor. Not a proper fire sensor

#

Those will be seperate

forest edge
#

ok i think i understand. the same system has seperate sensors for reading temps

last cedar
#

Yes

#

And those sensors appear to be built into the sirens

#

For some reason

forest edge
#

was gonna say, combined in the same unit would be dumb lol

last cedar
#

Mmm, this is very much a "look nice at home" system

#

At its heart

forest edge
#

what do you mean built into the sirens? now we're back to it being one unit lol

last cedar
#

But I will swap in proper sensors where needed (like for some etc)

forest edge
#

or they commuicate with the sirens which then in return commicate with a hub etc

last cedar
#

Home_4_0_EN.png

#

Indoor and outdoor temp

#

Comes from the sirens

#

Apparently

#

Not played with thr system yet, but it looks kinda nice. Not even sure if I want use their own sirens tbh

#

I think I want more data points than I would install sirens :D

#

I think it will be better with external stuff, like zigbee, firing straight into HA

forest edge
#

you know they have proven the more "advanced" complex security system is, the easier it is to bypass

last cedar
#

Haven't seen it with my own eyes yet. The stuff we use at work is pretty secure

Planning to still use tag and 6 digit codes. Tags are desfire, so rolling codes and encrypted database

#

Planning to do what would be okay for alarm class 2, without the monitoring, may end up paying for it to be monitored too.

#

Everything that opens over 30x30cm is guarded. Volume detection in every room, at least 2 sirens, 6 digit codes, hard wired electrical connection, unable to arm if faults, battery backup for at least 12 hours eyc etc

Just heard about Logitech killing Harmony... fack

#

And LG killing their entire smartphone business... also fack...

#

There goes the single Logitech product I cared about, AND the single LG product I cared about

#

This is as shit as when Phillips killed amBX by selling it to MadCatz

I can't remember the last time I saw someone with an LG smartphone ๐Ÿ˜„

@deft pewter All the other brands have shitty quirks, so I've kinda stuck with LG...

#

I've had an LG G3, G6, and I'm currently on an LG v35

I don't think there's such a thing as a perfect phone but I'm happy with my OnePlus 6 still. Only thing I wish it had was wireless charging.

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, Qi charging was a requirement for me. lol

deft pewter
#

Still considering one of those plugin things you suggested... but the rest of the features on this phone and the price point were great.

The OnePlus 9 Pro supports Qi, finally ๐Ÿ˜›

#

@dusky plank Windows Phone was what I ran, exclusively, before Android

#

Picked up a Samsung Focus running Windows Phone 7 in 2009

deft pewter
#

But the price...

#

I'm not spending close to a grand on a phone.

subtle pasture
#

@deft pewter That's also why I kept landing on LG... got a brand new v35 for $120 because it was a year old

#

Flagship specs for under $200. Kinda wild...

so you like living to the fullest I see

#

@dusky plank Apparently everything I touch dies after a few years >_>

#

I had a Samsung Focus, a Lumia 900, then a Lumia 920... and they killed Windows Phone

#

LG G3, G6, V35... and they killed all LG phones

#

Which brand should I pick to kill off next? Looks like it just takes 3 handset purchases >_>

dusky plank
#

HTC goes down the drain next I heard

subtle pasture
#

I was actually thinking of getting another Nokia... but all of their current handsets are actually slower than my current V35

@forest edge Not my fault they seem like the only decent offering ๐Ÿ˜•

LG has been kind of crap for awhile

Qi charging, MicroSD card slot, no screen notch or hole-punch, 3.5mm headphone jack included, etc...

I remember the pixel display issues between the pixel 2 and 3 lol

LG tried really hard, I give them that... but everything else ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ market is saturated...
