you ol' grouches have been telling us to stay away from tutorial vids from day one, so I dare not watch any HA YT-videos

deft pewter
#

Videos are fine. I get that some people are visual learners.

#

YouTube celebrities though... how on earth did we end up in a timeline where it's insanely profitable for some nerd in a basement to just record their ramblings?

#

Even worse, they've been around long enough that we now have a generation of kids aspiring to be online celebs too.

lost yarrow

I was a visual leaner before using docker, as soon i began using docker i completely switched to just reading the docs. i get so much more information out of it

deft pewter
#

Give up on school, just start a YT channel... πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

orchid rose

How is that any different from TV, other than it's easier to have a platform?

deft pewter

The problem is the platform. All these idiots thinking they're important.

I mean, it's a low key way of introducing universal basic income

People drop out of school all the time to chase a movie career

Noise used to get filtered out and editors would do their thing with the material before it was published. Now people can just put any kind of shit on the internet and other people will lap it up.

If it's that easy to make money on YouTube, why don't we all do that?

automation, you live by the code you die by the code

subtle pasture

@bitter pawn What's fun is when the false positives aren't necessarily false...

#

The server may be online NOW, but why did it report offline? Is the monitoring service down? Faulty networking? Rebooted unexpectedly?

#

I'd say it's their job to investigate before they call it a false positive...

#

I get tickets like this bounced to me all the time, and 9 times out of 10, there was a VERY good reason the ticket generated

#

"Hey, these weren't false positives, the server was crashing and rebooting every night at the same time... YOU need to look into that..."

True. I have code running in my 64 port goop esp that I have yet to get mqtt to always see it online but it always works. Lights on when door opens and such. Not worth my time to figure out why it shows offline when it’s online.

It reports offline even though it’s not. So I turned off offline notification. If I open the garage entry door and the lights turn on for 4 minutes and shut off without motion I consider it good. It's about the Swedish language and how every "rule" to the language tends to come with at least one exception, to the point that you almost can't call it a confirmed rule until you have found what the exception is. In other words; there's always exceptions.

crisp sapphire
#

weak needle
#

Okay, so here's a leading question..... do you have defined rules for IP addresses on your network?

I'm redesigning my network at the moment in anticipation of having a ONT installed on the 26th, with a complete overhaul. I'm thinking of setting static IPs within ranges so I can easily remember them say 2-10 home network infrastructure (pihole, NAS etc), Me having 50-59, wife having 60-69, daughter having 70-79, son having 80-89, smarthome and automation having 200-240 etc.

Anyone else have anything like that?

crisp sapphire
#

@weak needle me

#

first 30 ips of my (/24) network is carved out for network & IoT stuff

#

eventually im getting a proper enterprise solusion and vlanning

weak needle
#

so I'm not over complicating it. I thought I was going too much into it (my background is military comms so that's how I was trained back in the day...)

crisp sapphire
#

you somewhat are

#

use vlans instead

weak needle
#

I was thinking that

crisp sapphire
#

carving out spesific ranges within the same range isnt the most elegant solusion

#

Im stuck with a crappy isp router/switch/ap combo & cant vlan :((

#

so for now everythings on a 192.168.0.xx/24 subnet

weak needle
#

ooof. I have about 15-20 routers at this point as I work in the VPN industry now

crisp sapphire
#

ah. Well i live in a relatively small, angient apartment

#

so enterprise is grossly overkill for me. But o well

weak needle
#

I dont use them, I just needed them to write all the setup guides πŸ˜›

#

I actually use an Asus mesh network

crisp sapphire
#

Looks like il be going with a dream machine pro

crisp sapphire
weak needle
#

very nice

#

really good actually

#

can also be flashed with Merlin firmware easily which gives additional options and performance

crisp sapphire

cool

weak needle
#

Pretty much all routers suck at VPNs though due to using ARM chips and not having acceleration. I have an InvizBox for that (I work there)

#

(so if you want a discount code, give me a holler)

crisp sapphire
#

Im facing a dilemma rn. I cant seling mount my AP, so il need to go with a bidirecrional one.

Problem is that ubiquiti dosnt sell any wifi 6 bidirectional ap's

#

and im not going wifi 5 when every new device's got 6

weak needle
#

smart....

#

why are you going ceiling mount? aesthetics?

crisp sapphire
#

so im gonna have to sit on my ass and wait. Or get a wifi 5 ap and upgrade later.

crisp sapphire

#

wifi 6 & new esp's with support for it. Glorious 1 - 5 (& 6) Ghz goodness.

#

The dream.

weak needle
#

give it time

#

thats why I'm looking at the new Asus routers as they mesh and have wifi 6

#

getting hold of wifi 6 devices will be hard though for the future due to the semiconductor shortage

crisp sapphire
#

Why not wired ap's?

weak needle
#

we're looking at 16 week lead time currently for AX chips

crisp sapphire
weak needle
#

they're wired. Still a mesh though

crisp sapphire
#

ah, that kind

#

So how many devices in total on the network?

weak needle
#

let me check

#

26 excluding ethernet. My HA ODroid arrived today so that will be going on but getting rid off the hue bridge and hive bridge

#

I have 86 devices registered to the router however, just 26 active now

clear ferry
#

I do ranges for different stuff

#

But I do DNS lookups for almost everything

#

So in the end it doesn't matter much

crisp sapphire

@forest edge wouldn't know @last cedar because he looks like this

you guys sure do like changing the UI layout of the automations and scripts listing lol

#

is there two ways to run an automation on the main screen now?

not sure what the round arrow button does, no pop up hint

I love some corporate stuff that makes no sense, I get a warning in the travel app because the flight I want is $100 more, but I would have to wait 5 hours at the airport with the option it wants me to take, and I cost the company $250 per hours I'm sitting at the airport

#

or like when I travel to southern france for work, and it tells me "you should take this flight it is cheaper" and that flight requires an overnight stay in zurich, but is $50 cheaper

hushed basalt
#

Computer says no

clever mortar
#

Yeah, I had one where it was cheaper to get a flight in business class than economy, so I had to justify saving money...

#

Or the other fun where it's ok to get a train, but getting a flight is cheaper and faster, yet the system says no πŸ˜‚

clear ferry
#

trains are fucking expensive in the UK

#

a one person single way ticket to wales from london was as much as a rental car for three days

#

so we opted for that

clever mortar
#

Yeah, but I do prefer them when I'm not in a rush. Get on the train, chill, get off

lapis cipher
#

hows your companies in regards of keeping a bit of holiday aside the business trip?

clever mortar
#

Depends on the trip, but generally quite flexible

lapis cipher
#

Same here, obviously business trip reason cannot be tied any way to your desired holiday destination...

clever mortar
#

I know somebody who got sent half way around the world and added a month of holiday to the end of it. Work paid for the flights, they just had to sort out their costs for the holiday part

lapis cipher
#

Exactly. I flew to Texas and had some 4 days vacation aside it, obviously paying for my own expenses and no daily allowance, just adjust flight schedules accordingly and it often actually gets cheaper for the company

#

I've just heard some are absolutely against anything such, must be the same companies that think working remote is not working at all..

clever mortar
#

I know one lot that flew somebody to the other side of the world, and then immediately back. The meeting was even at the airport hotel, so they never even left the airport wail

clear ferry
#

usually no issues for me, In the past I would travel 2-5 days before the event and leave 2-5 days after the event

#

with kids, I try to get home as soon as possible

#

but if I travel to the US etc I do a couple of days extra to adjust

#

Also, I charge the company for those extra days

clever mortar
#

Yeah, if major timezone changes are involved it's only sane to have time to adjust, or you're not at your best

clear ferry
#

I was supposed to go to a conference in LV, but me and my wife was supposed to stay a week in NY before the event and fly in country, when the event got cancelled I got the company to refund my plane tickets to and from NY since I had paid those myself

I've done that. B&B out in the sticks, woke up, jumped in the car to head to the meeting, and I realised a couple of miles down the (deserted) road that I was on the wrong side facepalm

I usually adjust 3-5 minutes in

yea.. that are truly painful limitations
