I've decided I'm going to keep it simple and stick with the trusty ggdG in every file I touch.

It's a lot to memorise at once. I only knew the really basic commands a couple of weeks ago. Trying to learn the more advanced stuff.

This week's practise will be text object motions.

I've played with Linux for 23 years, I only started learning vi four years ago

deft pewter
#

I'm starting to realise that it's way quicker to edit with vi shortcuts than without.

Being able to jump to and edit a block of code in a couple of keystrokes is amazing. I don't know why I ever used a mouse for that shit ๐Ÿ˜„

I should learn this

lapis cipher

have to admit could pick up a few new tricks myself, too. Also i lack skills with the visual mode, i always just get out of it

Visual mode seems kinda meh. Text objects ftw.

I can tell my eyesight isn't as good as when I was a kid but I'm still a long way off needing glasses.

When I was 40+ I had to buy pair of glasses

I've used glasses since I was three

young sigil

At the beginning of 2017 I was doing SMD soldering no probs. By the end of the year I needed glasses to read. The change happened very suddenly, like in a matter of months.

#

And I have never been able to do those magic eye 3D picture things. My optometrist reckons it's because I have a very slight vertical misalignment between my eyes. I reckon it is just a conspiracy. They don't really exist.

subtle pasture
#

@young sigil Can you do cross-eye stereograms?

#

That's all magic-eye images are

young sigil
#

Nope.

#

The images don't align properly.

subtle pasture
#

Weird. Usually that would mean you just generally have no depth perception...

young sigil
#

I'm pretty sure I do. I mean I can easily tell how far away things are and my optometrist has never mentioned it being an issue.

clear ferry
#

I can't even cross my eyes

#

Because my eyesight is so terrible my bad eye just follows my good eye

young sigil
#

I can do that trick where you put both index fingers horizontally in front of your eyes, go cross eyed and make a little floating double ended finger, but it's not easy.

subtle pasture
#

I have some decent muscle control. Can move my eyes, eyebrows, and ears independently

clear ferry
#

My optometrists have called what I have adapted depth perception because I kinda understand how far away something is since I stopped walking into them

molten osprey

Yeah? So, how does the container approach get 'restored' ... just the yaml files wont cut it anymore these days, no?

clever mortar

The same way you restore any other files

They're just files, no magic

Your entire HA config is in the config folder, not just the YAML

molten osprey
#

I'm aware, but which files to back up and which files not to back up isn't exactly clear and straight-forward. I copied the ENTIRE config folder from the old over the new install and that caused lots of issues. I copied only the YAML files and several things did not work.

deft pewter

C-style functions are usually something like:

Whereas JS is like this:
```function someFunction() {
    // do some stuff
#
It's the fact that the { isn't in the first column that prevents ]] style motions working.
#
Can still use text objects that involve curlies but it's not as convenient for pure navigation.
glacial knot
#
ahh. Yea, then parser that enables these kinda movements is pretty limited
glacial knot
I wonder if it'd be possible to hook into them with something like clangd
I'm tossing this in off-topic since it's more of a general process than a specific thing to HA... Anybody know of any appropriate guides to automate deployment of SSL certificates to multiple servers using a wildcard certificate? I'm reverse-proxying with nginx and the redirects are tossing up 502 errors...except in one where I manually installed the certificate I pulled with certbot.
last dirge
#
you're not terminating SSL at the web server?
mint flame
#
I think that's ultimately what I'm trying to do, but not succeeding.
last dirge
#
be a lot cooler if you did
#
anything behind your web server should run in the clear
mint flame
#
Basically, I've got nginx running in a container handling the cert renewal and reverse proxy. I'd like to get all my other containers, VMs, and any future discreet hardware successfully running secure.
#
...is what you're saying to have it setup to have that secure connection terminate at the reverse proxy container, so I'm secure between it and wherever it's connecting to....and then everything from the reverse proxy to the internal service local network should be in the clear?
last dirge
#
that's how it's done most of the time
#
at least in my experience
mint flame
#
Gotcha. That's what the guides looked like I was supposed to be doing, but it just hasn't worked. 502 errors. Didn't work for anything until I manually copied that cert to the individual service.
last dirge
#
then you're doing something wrong
mint flame
#
Right.
last dirge
#
I use cloudflare
mint flame
#
Likewise!
last dirge
they use a secondary cert to my caddy server
main SSL cert is certbot on cloudflare
caddy talks to whatever's behind it in the clear
mint flame
#
I have everything going through their proxy, secured from remote client to their proxy server, then I'm trying to secure from my server to their proxy server. Currently running certbot as well to pull that certificate from Cloudflare.
#
Looks like the big difference is you've got Caddy and I'm using nginx.
last dirge
#
not that big of a difference
oh, yeah those cards are cheaper, i need usb version
molten osprey
#
i've had to use Slack for something recently ... have a strong preference for Discord!!
#
Slack is visually way more cluttered
deft pewter
#
But threads!
hushed basalt
#
It's quite different
#
Slack really is more business focused
deft pewter
#
That's how it's currently used, sure. Doesn't mean it has to be that way. The recent changes suggest they want to encourage casual users to join too.
#
Fundamentally, it's not really that different from Discord. You can manage membership of 'servers', and then limit access to individual channels. You can DM from anywhere (a little too freely now, but that's another issue).
hushed basalt
#
What changes
deft pewter
#
To me, the biggest distinction is that Slack has a mature ecosystem of plugins/integrations.
hushed basalt
#
I think they're fundamentally created as different tools
deft pewter
#
They screwed up. Allowed people to get in touch via email (which for most of us is pretty public) and send a customised request. People were using it to harass others.
hushed basalt
#
Like a tractor and a car are similar, but built for different purposes
#
They both have 4 wheels, an engine, cabin, steering wheel, etc
deft pewter
#
They're really not that different ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ
deft pewter
#
If Discord had message threads and integrations with Jira/GitHub/etc, they'd basically be the same thing with a different skin.
clear ferry
#
This is where I bought it from
lapis cipher
#
oh, thanks, need to check again, i am way too regular visitor on aliexpress nowadays ๐Ÿ˜„
clear ferry
#
You need a pcie adapter with a-e key for that board
lapis cipher
#
then again kid goes to riding, that's like 30 eur each time so i can also put money to my hobbies AT LEAST the same amount ๐Ÿ˜„
clear ferry
#
The one I ordered is no longer available
lapis cipher
#
i don't have any fancy machines around, might need to purchase something more fresh, i'm like the graveyard of anything free.. servers i've sold out long ago, too large, too noisy, too power-demanding for my needs
clear ferry
#
My old itx box with j4105 and 12GB ram is currently running half of my containers
#
And octoprint
#
And some more stuff
#
Including the frigate with coral
lapis cipher
#
i've got two shuttle's here i need to power up and see what they've eaten, i remember one being at least rather slow.. Maybe need to recycle some old laptop thought i'd like some tiny nuc or such. It would be all easy if i wasn't so cheap-ass
clear ferry
#
Hmm my Plex container has started getting hangs lately, need to figure that out
lapis cipher
#
i've really cleaned up all the shit, i've got some really beefy rack servers but due to lack of need at the time it only made sense to sell those forward
clear ferry
#
My r510 suffices fine for me for more years to come, with everything being dockerized
#
Also, you've got a PM fool
hushed basalt
#
Why would they try to turn discord into slack
clear ferry
#
Slacord
#
Disck
lapis cipher
#
and next thing one notices is having to use them all..
#
kinda happened with whatsapp, people moved forward to random services so everybody had to install them all..
#
"i only use now signal" "hey i'm using telegram"."..."
clever mortar
#
I now use all of the things
sharp scaffold
#
this place has too many channels ๐Ÿ˜•
lapis cipher
#
yeah, i think this channel is enough ๐Ÿ˜„
sharp scaffold
#
there is no way to send TTS to an app, right?
#
i3/16GB NUC here btw, only reason it will get upgraded is usb3
clear ferry
#
What do you need usb3 for?
sharp scaffold
#
big external drive for nextcloud and backups
clear ferry
#
Mmmm single drive
#
๐Ÿคข
sharp scaffold
#
12TB on usb2 will take a while
#
it doesn't have to be a single drive, you can get enclosures with 2
#
for backups a single drive is fine
#
and I am also pushing backups to a secondary machine
clear ferry
sharp scaffold
#
err pulling rather
#
also, I am using this as the backup box for my NAS
#
running borg in a vm, pulling snapshots on an external drive
clear ferry
#
Deduping actually
sharp scaffold
#
borg is great
clear ferry
#
I haven worked with dedup for... 10 years
#
I have yet to see it used at home
#
But I might need to try borg
sharp scaffold
#
it's not something you think of specifically, you just tell borg to add something to its repo, it just happens to be efficient
lapis cipher
#
a bit like you don't think parity bits, it just happens..
sharp scaffold
#
really great for backups to the cloud, because it dedupes and chunks everything up
#
then encrypts the chunks
#
so you can upload only what changed
#
to any cloud, without worrying for security
#
(rclone ftw too)
clear ferry
#
The biggest concerns for me have been the sheer number of vendors offering their own dedup algorithms, with no certainty that you can undupe it in the future
sharp scaffold
#
well borg manages its own repository, I don't think there is any effort to make it generic
dusky plank
#
borg is ๐Ÿ”
sharp scaffold
#
it is open source, so you can keep on running one version forever
#
(theoretically)
#
so, sending TTS to an app -- not possible, right?
#
what's the cheapest way to get multi-room TTS?
clever mortar
#
Google Home Mini?
hushed basalt
#
Borg is pretty good
#
Storage management in general is a PITA though
sharp scaffold
#
I was happy with chromecast audio because it didn't have a mic
hushed basalt
#
Unfortunately I've been burnt by synology so self managing is the only way for home in my opinion
sharp scaffold
#
I don't want Google microphones all over the house :\
hushed basalt
#
Google would never betray your trust
#
"don't be evil"
#
Oh wait they removed that from their values
#
"Don't get caught" is the new one I think
clever mortar
#
The Home Mini has a switch that disconnects the mic ๐Ÿ˜‰
sharp scaffold
#
right
clever mortar
hushed basalt
#
Is it hardware though
#
Or is it just a gpio
sharp scaffold
#
it would have been great to be able to use any phone as a speaker for TTS
#
easy to get old broken iphones
#
or even better, sending TTS to the web app
#
hmm, that might be an idea
clever mortar
#
Android you can do TTS with for sure
clear ferry
#
Lannouncer
#
Or whatnot
sharp scaffold
#
ooh this
