Cars have been a taxable benefit here for a while. It's the other stuff they tightened up on.

#

It's a weird situation. If you have to be given a car for your job because you're a field agent, you can't exactly say no... but it still affects your income.

#

On the other hand, if you start giving expensive cars to upper management just because you can, of course it should affect their income.

glacial knot
#

it'll be even better once we got uber drivers recognized as employees

deft pewter
#

Not sure it'll change the BIK stuff here. They're already driving their own cars.

#

It's a step in the right direction for their rights though, that's for sure.

#

Even with that, you gotta try to see both sides... are Uber going to let drivers keep signing up when there's not enough work to keep them all busy and they gotta pay them for a full shift of sitting around waiting for fares?

This is actually really similar to what Microsoft intended to do with the Microsoft Band. Originally, the wearable was going to be a launch-day XBOX One accessory designed for motion control, rather than a fitness band.
The final band actually retains many of the sensors from the XBOX prototypes, including multiple gyroscopes, and can be used as a motion controller in some limited scenarios.

deft pewter
#

I guess it wasn't refined enough. Motion control is finnicky. Nerve sensors... that's neat.

#

The progress made with 'mind reading' is pretty cool too. I'm just not sure I'd want to wear a skull cap all day ๐Ÿ˜„

With all the info that facebook has on everyone, why does it need nerve control? They already know what you are thinking, why do you need to make it in an action? /s

anybody use guacamole?
I need to setup wol, which works by now but i need the packet to be sent to a specific port to start a libvirt vm - the port option however is not available in guacamole
is there some kind of wol proxy known for this?

clear ferry
#

Wol is not routable by nature, so need to get around that for sure

#

You could just use a webhook to send it internally on your network

#

I do that to start my vSphere lab when I'm travelling, that lab has its own router and wan adress

#

But HA sees the BMC and wakes it

dusky plank
#

yeah I know a web service is simple.. but I'd rather just use Guacamoles wol functionality and spare the second request ๐Ÿ˜„

clear ferry
#

Don't use guacamole... But can you tell it to do something else than a magic packet?

dusky plank
#

hm, I might just create a rule on my proxy to fire a cgi on request of the specific guacamole vm url

#

it's very... limited

clear ferry
#

If guac can each the broadcast address of the subnet where the VM lives you should be golden

dusky plank
#

yep it does but as said I need it to wake up a VM - libvirt

#

I already have a daemon listening on port <whatever> to start the vm on magic packet with this MAC

this works when I send a magic packet to port <whatever> but it does not get triggered by generic wol (port 7? 9?)

Hey, glusterfs is great

#

When configured correctly

lapis cipher
#

I ran almost petabyte on top of glusterfs, it had its issues but its on the other hand supersimple to setup up and take into use

deft pewter
clear ferry
#

I have customers who have run multiple petabyte on gluster for a decade, no issues

lapis cipher
#

possibly our use case caused part of the issues, the directory structure was already heavy'ish with two bytes x 2 and then content was uncountable number of small files

deft pewter
#

uncountable number of small files
This is why I hate developing any NodeJS stuff on Windows ๐Ÿ˜‚

lapis cipher
#

it was literally already way too slow to count the amount of files when we tried, even on a single bricks, i can't remember details of the setup but it was imho quite large, considering it really wasn't about large files and such

#

expanding was easy but that leaves the cluster unbalanced as rebalancing would never finish up, then again even that didn't much matter

clear ferry
#

Sounds like you should have had a proper modern object based storage system

lapis cipher
#

can't remember the available options back then on that front, ceph was there i recall. We utilized commercial storage also for many things but this was beyond reasonable to build on top of such (would have been super-expensive)

clear ferry
#

Scality is great

lapis cipher
#

And possibly nobody even knew how large it would actually end

#

knew, anticipated,.. things got a bit out of hands with the volume growth

hearty depot
#

I would realy like to try gluster on a scale, but here I fight with ceph ๐Ÿคฃ

lapis cipher
#

glusterfs is really easy, 2 commands to have a volume already running, it can be also used nicely to move things around online, like move storage from local to remote location and so forth

#

haven't touched it for many years. Also tried it with openstack and while it worked there, too, it had its issues, just maybe ceph would have worked better on that case, dunno, its dead cloud already

#

ups, feels a bit sluggish

hearty depot
lapis cipher
#

One of the nice things of glusterfs is also the fact it does not mangle with the files any extra, it doesn't split them into cryptic pieces with parities and such but they are as is on the disk so that "YourDatagone" is kinda bullshit compared to just about any other clustered fs stuff, it merely creates metafiles around

deft pewter

static schooner
#

unusable for any other (more?) useful info

static schooner
#

I use VSCode for just about all my editing these days, but every so often I realize that I inadvertently switched to vi in the tiny terminal at the bottom

deft pewter
#

I never realised you can use ^ and $ to move to the start and end of lines. I'm a massive dumb dumb.

static schooner
#

same as regex

deft pewter
#

Yeah, makes sense why, I just never knew ๐Ÿ˜„

#

Using them as motions in commands is amazing.

glacial knot
#

You can also use 0 for actual start of line. ^ is first non-space/tab character

deft pewter
#

Previously, my knowledge of vi commands was pretty much limited to dd and dw (with numbers for motions), p and u.

#

Oh, and searching by regex... but as Tinkerer keeps pointing out, there's sed style replacements for me to learn too.

static schooner
#

vi was part of the very first CS course I took in college

glacial knot

D: you got a weird college then

I wish they'd taught such useful things in my CS degree. Instead they felt we should learn old shit like Java Beans...

deft pewter

glacial knot
#

we had students submit via git. But we never put any effort into teaching that to them ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

ever known that git is not a delta (stores diffs) VCS - git stores snapshots ov every file

deft pewter
deft pewter
glacial knot
#

ehh. I agree with git, if only to prevent SVN
But editors? that's very scattered either way.
So what would you teach? Eclipse, VS, VS-Code, CBlocks, Qt-Creator, vim, Xcode, or god forbid, emacs

deft pewter
#

I don't mean fully-fledged IDE's, since that's often either a personal preference or something prescribed by your team. I mean they should at least introduce you to vi and nano, since they exist on all good servers.

glacial knot
#

I didn't say the editor is good ๐Ÿ˜‰

Don't forget to alias nano to vi

lapis cipher

my analogy for vi(m) is simple, it is the most widely available (default) editor on any system and they might NOT have nanos or such around, maybe ed in some rare cases. So, for survival skills its essential to know that

fiery sorrel
#

Back :)
I had some latin class in my early years (12-15yo) and i don't remember one bit :D

deft pewter
#

I'm too young to have studied Latin at school. You lot are old.

fiery sorrel
#

i'm 24 tho

#

fu** XD

deft pewter
#

My wife's parents did but they're 30 years older and went to fancy schools. My parents didn't and they're a similar age.

fiery sorrel
#

it was optional

deft pewter
#

Nerd

fiery sorrel
#

but my parent though it would help me get better in french

fiery sorrel
#

now i can't spell anything right in french, latin grec AND english !

#

since when optional mean you have the choice ? :P (especialy when you're 11)

deft pewter
#

I think I'd struggle with languages with several cases. We only rarely use a second case in English (so rarely that people don't even realise we have it...)

fiery sorrel
#

case ?

deft pewter
#

Dative/vocative/locative, etc.

winter wren
#

in case u like travelling a lot....some spanish and chinese could be very wellcomed

fiery sorrel
#

i have no idea what those are

winter wren
#

:))))

deft pewter
winter wren
#

english grammar is too easy

fiery sorrel
#

and yet i screw it up everytime

deft pewter
#

It's why you get all these stupid tables for languages like Latin:

#

I tried learning Polish. They have 7 cases ๐Ÿ˜ข I'm so glad I didn't try stuff like Suomi or Magyar

fiery sorrel
#

i actualy never learn anything from school, i just got use to hearing spoken english and try to write word that sound like it :(

winter wren
#

we have 4 for past only, 3 for future and another 4 types only for vers

forest edge
#

just remember there is old english and evolved english lol

deft pewter
winter wren
#

tenses....cases only 5

deft pewter
#

'only 5' ๐Ÿ˜‚

forest edge
#

no i live on the other side of the world

deft pewter
#

But it's closely related to Latin, right? So it makes sense you have 5.

ah...my mistake

deft pewter

Finno-Ugric ( or ; Fenno-Ugric) or Finno-Ugrian (Fenno-Ugrian), is a traditional grouping of all languages in the Uralic language family except the Samoyedic languages. Its formerly commonly accepted status as a subfamily of Uralic is based on criteria formulated in the 19th century and is criticized by some contemporary linguists such as Tapani...

Estonian is very similar to Finnish though

low harness

Yeah, sanding PLA is terrible. I heard you can blast it with a hot air gun to get some color and shine back, though.

This took me, like, 10 minutes on all sides. 100, 240, 800 grit and some stropping on leather with buffing compound.

low harness

PLA is the simple one, low thermal expansion and theoretically bio-degradable and food safe (don't), but difficult to post process
ABS is the one with poisonous fumes, harder to print but smoothable, stronger and waterproof.
PETG pretty much combines the best of those two

fiery sorrel

Example: I have my Chromecasts on a different subnet/VLAN. Without mDNS my devices on the corporate network would not be able to detect them.

Yes, standing waves in WiFi. A well-known phenomenon.

We're talking about the same thing here, right?

In physics, a standing wave, also known as a stationary wave, is a wave which oscillates in time but whose peak amplitude profile does not move in space
So your WiFi doesn't move in space? ๐Ÿคฏ

Phillips has an in wall box that would be neat, converts your switch to a smart switch while still powering bulbs 24/7

you can do that practically with every in wall switch?
