So any tips for me starting my first dev role next week 🎉

#

Don't drop the tables in production, look your enemies in the eye while you eat their heart, that sort of thing?

deft pewter
#

Congrats 🎉

#

Probably the most important part of the job is communicating exclusively in memes. Your time here with atx has prepared you well.

#

Pepe goes down well. Or it doesn't.

hushed basalt
#

Oofph pepe

#

Poor pepe. Pepe did nothing wrong.

Testing is for those who are not confident in them

It's a TDD company hehe

Are you going to be working with gherkin and cucumber then?

I don't think atx would know a test looks like even if it bought him dinner and took him out to the movies

#

"make change, if no complaints, test passed"

clear ferry
deft pewter
#

I'd put a cut-off on it though... maybe if they don't find the bug inside 6 months, it doesn't count.

hushed basalt
#

When in doubt

#

"Due to an outage with our vendor"

deft pewter
#

I wish I didn't have to hear that for real at least once a week. We don't have to make it up when there are genuine outages that often 😄

hushed basalt
#

What's aws like in production and scale

#

Any horror stories

deft pewter
#

AWS is great. It won't be their services that bring your apps down, it'll be your own shitty architecture.

#

We shoot ourselves in the foot all the time through poor design.

#

Well... let's pretend their us-east-1 AZ didn't completely fold a few weeks back 🤣

hushed basalt
#

We only have one region in the entire country

#

And it's like 4000km away from me

deft pewter
#

What would be your next nearest? Tokyo?

hushed basalt
#

Sydney

#

Seoul may be closer but it's not worth going over the international links

deft pewter
#

There are more over that way than I thought.

hushed basalt
#

When people say your critical workloads should be multi region Im just like, that's nice

#

I think if aws sydney went down half of Australia would shut down

deft pewter
#

Again, don't worry about AWS going down. Redundancy within a region is probably more important than redundancy across regions.

hushed basalt
#

I'm part of a local linux group

#

And they're hard core self hosted peeps

#

And it's just like, why.

deft pewter
#

Old-fashioned, I guess.

#

It's been that way for decades and they aren't ready to move on to 'the cloud'.

#

Plus... someone's gotta manage all those servers that people don't realise exist 😄

Random question, does anyone know of a speaker type device that is similar to an Echo dot but would only be used for streaming music from Plex over the home network?

Trying to find a solution so my kids can stream music from our plex server without all the extra crap you get in an echo dot, etc.

subtle pasture
#

Just stuck one of these on a cordless drill and went to town on the bathroom. lol

subtle pasture
#

@narrow rune Neat, glad to see more x86 SBCs on the market... looks a lot like a LattePanda, though...

narrow rune
#

indeed it does. so far it looks like zima looks cheaper option because they are going through funding stage.

subtle pasture
#

Hmm... the LattePanda I linked offers two PCIe slots (one 4x + one 2x) and a CPU that's roughly 3x faster than the Zimaboard

#

Also double the eMMC storage, and integrated wifi / bluetooth, AND an integrated Arduino Leonardo (which is what all those GPIO pins are connected to)

#

Any killer features on the Zimaboard I'm missing?

narrow rune
#

hmm.. I'm requesting POE to run the board instead of 12V/3A adapter.

subtle pasture
#

Heh, does the Zimaboard have built-in PoE?

narrow rune
#

yeah. i'm comparing it with the same model.

#

zima has more cores/threads but still older celeron processor. I guess at $140.. you make peace with it? 😄

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, I checked that out. The core/thread count doesn't mean shit. lol

#

The LattePanda with a 2-core/4-thread i3 beats the pants off of the lower-end 4-core/4-thread Celeron version

#

Faster single and multi-threaded scores

#

Look up the PassMark score of each chip for a rough idea

narrow rune
#

yeah.. i'm wondering if you're running docker containers on it and having more cores/thread might help?

subtle pasture
#

Not according to the passmark scores. lol

narrow rune
#

i3 is definitely better than celeron. hope they incorporate that soon. i'm sure they'll jackup the prices then.

#

now you are making me think should I back out being a backer on this project? lol

subtle pasture
#

On the up side... you can already get a single-board x86 computer that meets or exceeds the kickstarter specs for not much more money 😛

#

Granted, they aren't an exact specs-match, but you have two m.2 (which can be adapted to PCIe) expansion slots to fix that. lol

#

Slap a quad-SFP+ card on there and still have an m.2 slot leftover for an NVMe drive. See how far you can push it as a 10gbps router 😛

#

Might not need the NVMe drive with the 32/64GB of onboard eMMC, now that I think about it

#

Options, lots of options

#

That's impressive for its own reasons

#

I'm really curious to see how their high-end cards work out

clear ferry
#

but what is the price 🤔

subtle pasture
#

No idea yet

#

What I'm curious about is if these cards support Intel Quicksync

clear ferry
#

They should

#

I guess

subtle pasture
#

Being able to install the latest Quicksync encoder/decoder in any system would be incredibly handy

#

This would instantly be the baseline card to run for Plex transcoding

last cedar
clear ferry
#

such long cables wow

#

also, I do prefer kroneterminals over screw terminals

#

nice, I've been able to deploy kube fully through ansible

#

and I was able to deploy HA with load balancer

subtle pasture
#

Looks like the Intel Xe DG1 does support Quicksync 👀

clear ferry
subtle pasture
#

Well, that just became my top pick for installing in my Plex server...

clear ferry
#

I WANT THE PRICE

subtle pasture
#

Considering it appears to go head to head with a GTX 1050 (non-Ti)... Probably around $150

clear ferry
#

that is reasonable

#

I would actually pay that

last cedar
#

@clear ferry got the use the connection they send, the junction boxes were IDC though :&

clear ferry
#

I want a new season of JoJo PU_PeepoCryDrink

last cedar
#

It would be neater if I could have pulled all new cable, no junction boxes etc, but it is what it is!

#

See how useful raccoons thumbs are now?

last cedar
#

Also, that intel card is nice, wonder if it can be used with virtual machines, for quicksync "passthrough"

clear ferry
#

should be both possible with VMs and docker containers

subtle pasture
#

Parts are going out to OEMs. We might see retail cards soon

last cedar
#

Would be nice with a ryzen with one of those for quicksync (blue iris)

#

Fingers crossed!

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, I was thinking about AMD systems as well, since most of them lack integrated graphics

clear ferry
#

Have they stopped doing that ?

subtle pasture
#

Or even Intel HEDT systems (like my desktop), which also lack an iGPU

clear ferry
#

I haven't seen a consumer AMD in years

subtle pasture
#

AMD still makes APUs, but they're not what you'd usually buy for a gaming machine

#

Intel throws in an iGPU on pretty much everything except their high end HEDT platform

#

Granted, you're usually running a big discreet GPU in such systems, so you wouldn't notice much difference, but having an iGPU comes in handy sometimes

#

Case in point, being able to run video transcoding on the iGPU with minimal impact on the CPU or dGPU

clear ferry
#

Whatever happened to Intel Knights Landing though

#

That was toted for a few years

subtle pasture
#

Still exists as the Xeon Phi product line

#

They're used as coprocessors in supercomputers

forest edge
#

not talking 3d printed stuff.. the cnc wood carver

#

saw some video a dude did where he was making like 30k a month or some shit

#

was insane

#

throws a block of wood into the machine, hits a button then goes watches opra or some shit

clear ferry
sharp nexus
#

just remember that youtubers lie to you sometimes.

forest edge
#

sure, but also know that wood carving isn't really a mian thing these days. thats why stuff you see is pricey

clear ferry
#

shit, people who depend on likes and subscribes lie ?

forest edge
clear ferry
#

I should post a sign for you

sharp nexus
#

I'm not saying it is impossible, it is very possible to make 30k a month doing wood signs. But you also have to consider the fact that there's a very small number of companies that want to buy 100 engraved signs from you, and they're not doing it once a month

forest edge
#

they weren't signs

#

this was a 3d thing

#

he made bald eagles or something

sharp nexus
#

Ok, so 3d wooden reliefs. How many people are buying those, do you think?

forest edge
#

i have no idea. didn't even know that crap was made by machines till i saw that video.. use to be a hand carving art, or chainsaws etc

hushed basalt
clear ferry
#

🤣

sharp nexus
#

I own a company doing things like those bald eagles, though mine are more "I want one piece of this custom thing" so I don't deal in large economies of scale, but when one of those reliefs takes, lets say, five hours to CNC, and then x amount of time to finish properly, there's a lot of cost in making something like that. And if I want to make a profit, I have to sell it to you for a markup so that I actually have a reason to do it. If he's selling those bald eagles at $1000 per piece, he might have a 30k month, sure. If he has multiple machines and multiple employees he can make more, faster and make even more money, but then what's the limiting factor one wants to consider? At what point is it no longer "this guy on youtube made 30k a month carving signs!" I guess what i'm saying is, if he knows how to make 30k a month making some 3d reliefs I'd love to take him out to dinner and pick his brain on exactly where that magic is happening in the process.

#

Its all about finding that niche that has a wide body of potential customers that nobody else is in yet

#

Its possible he's The Bald Eagle King, who knows? Heh. Maybe I need to make bald eagles.

clear ferry
#

I'll keep my $10k a month and not have to deal with people who want bald eagles 🤣

forest edge
#

maybe he just found something many people like

#

as I said wood carvbings isn't really a main thing these days

sharp nexus
#

I know, right? Sometimes I just think about paying the fee to dissolve my LLC and just make random shit for fun.

deft pewter
#

Definitely don't want to see atx's 'bald eagle'

forest edge
#

so if someone wanted something like that made out of a wood, they would pay for it

clear ferry
deft pewter
#

How much would you charge for a life-size carving of a tree?

sharp nexus
#

Does the tree need to have a bald eagle in it?

forest edge
#

this last Christmas lowes here picked up a order from a local who makes those ceramic Christmas trees. the ones where there is a light at the bottom and little plastic pegs that look like colored lights that fit in holes around the tree and light up

#

those things were made on the hella cheap and I have no doubts lowes paid a pretty penny for them cause they wanted an arm and leg for them

deft pewter
#

Bald eagle is optional

forest edge
#

I bring that up cause my mother use to do that stuff years and years ago and made those trees herself and the ones we had were way nicer

that's cute.

The #1 thing I learned from being a consultant is that no matter how bad you may think your companies' practices are with regards to any metrickable factor, there is definitely a company that is worse.

It's the companies that never engage with consultants I'd be scared about

#

now if we're talking management consultants, those are a different story altogether. But its fun to make fun of them because people think "oh yeah, that person's paid to tell other people what to do" but in reality, companies fail because the people running them don't fully understand how to run them, and that's where management consultants can really help.

Who cares about IP? It's just a convention.

clear ferry

We ran out of our good coffee so I schedule an emergency delivery of some stuff from Aldi that the internet says is decent.

#

I tried some dunkin donuts beans but that is for the trash

I just go shopping once a week NM3_Kiss

forest edge

amazon foods actually has some decent stuff like their oatmeal

night zodiac
#

Amazon closed their market like last week

#

The grocery part

#

But we order our coffee from Montana. It is usually fine.

#

My girl just made some espresso for Tiramisu and we ran out before I could order more

forest edge
#

the pantry separation was discontinued but the items you can still buy in the main website

wet pilot
#

i use amazon brand coffee and have it ship out a 32oz bag every month

#

its "ok" coffee and cheap

night zodiac
#

My coffee isn't real expensive

#

Maybe

deft pewter
#

Do you heathens all drink dark roast?

wet pilot
#

i usually do medium or light

deft pewter
#

🤢

wet pilot
#

light has more caffeine

night zodiac
deft pewter
#

Marginally more caffeine but way more flavor.

wet pilot
#

though i do like deathwish coffee

deft pewter
#

I love that you can actually taste the fruity notes when you don't burn the beans

wet pilot
#

yup

#

deft pewter
#

I love you

My girl accidentally added shit to my coffee out of the blue the other day. Ever since I have been trying to tell her the black coffee is way better. She like ruins it but oh well. That is what she wants.

#

I experienced how she drinks coffee

wet pilot

clear ferry

#

it all really depends on the machine you use. fact.

night zodiac
#

It all depends on all of the variables

gusty wraith
#

i figured not so much on the water but some people may say otherwise

#

it's about taste and that's very different across the board

night zodiac
#

I only use distilled just so my machine stays fresh

#

Acidic though

#

I like it

#

I have the ninja coffee bar

got a siemens eq600 years ago. does the job, has water filter in the tank and is easy to clean. filters are cheap and consumables also. also very servicable. had to clean out the grinder once because of built-up coffee fat.... although finding the right beans was a little bit of a pain. before that i used to drink ground coffe from a cheapo filter machine

#

i thought of getting a more ~~hipster ~~ barista style machine and then i reminded myself that i need coffee in the morning like immediately or the world around me is going to have a really bad time.

night zodiac
#

I highly suggest it. Great for single cups

#

It is smart on how it adds water

#

My coffee station

#

Hurry up instacart

gusty wraith
#

oh i see ... all manual there 😉

#

well - that's something i would do no matter what. ready made ground coffee is almost certainly filled with crap. tastes like soaked paper in most cases. EXCEPT when properly made with a percolator. these things can make the worst coffee taste good

i love holmes on homes

he just ripped his son a new ass for wanting to hardwood floor every single room (aside from bathrooms) and use no carpet anywhere lol

night zodiac
#

what's wrong with that

#

carpet is gross

forest edge
#

carpet is awesome

night zodiac

disgusting

forest edge

carpet has way more beneficial points than hardwood

wet pilot

i use a slightly different version of that one
