Don't drop the tables in production, look your enemies in the eye while you eat their heart, that sort of thing?
Congrats 🎉
Probably the most important part of the job is communicating exclusively in memes. Your time here with atx has prepared you well.
Pepe goes down well. Or it doesn't.
Always code in production environment
Testing is for those who are not confident in them
It's a TDD company hehe
Yep
Good for you!
Given Atx is a barstard
When he comes online
Then he should be bullied

I don't think atx would know a test looks like even if it bought him dinner and took him out to the movies
"make change, if no complaints, test passed"

Isn't this how all coding works?
I'd put a cut-off on it though... maybe if they don't find the bug inside 6 months, it doesn't count.
I wish I didn't have to hear that for real at least once a week. We don't have to make it up when there are genuine outages that often 😄
AWS is great. It won't be their services that bring your apps down, it'll be your own shitty architecture.
We shoot ourselves in the foot all the time through poor design.
Well... let's pretend their us-east-1 AZ didn't completely fold a few weeks back 🤣
What would be your next nearest? Tokyo?
There are more over that way than I thought.
When people say your critical workloads should be multi region Im just like, that's nice
I think if aws sydney went down half of Australia would shut down
Again, don't worry about AWS going down. Redundancy within a region is probably more important than redundancy across regions.
I'm part of a local linux group
And they're hard core self hosted peeps
And it's just like, why.
Old-fashioned, I guess.
It's been that way for decades and they aren't ready to move on to 'the cloud'.
Plus... someone's gotta manage all those servers that people don't realise exist 😄
Dey took er jerbs
You weren't lying about the purple. It's disgusting 🤣
Oof 🙄
lol
Random question, does anyone know of a speaker type device that is similar to an Echo dot but would only be used for streaming music from Plex over the home network?
Trying to find a solution so my kids can stream music from our plex server without all the extra crap you get in an echo dot, etc.
My new favorite home cleaning apparatus: https://www.amazon.com/Drillbrush-Bathroom-Surfaces-Scrubber-Cleaning/dp/B01MRLZ43B
Just stuck one of these on a cordless drill and went to town on the bathroom. lol
That feel when you realize the metal trim on your tub is supposed to be mirrored, not matte...
POWEEERRRR!!!
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/icewhaletech/zimaboard-single-board-server-for-creators
I recently backed this project to host my home-assistant and other docker containers. Hope it helps.
Yussss. You should see the one I have for cast iron
Airport Express? The last Gen?
@narrow rune Neat, glad to see more x86 SBCs on the market... looks a lot like a LattePanda, though...
indeed it does. so far it looks like zima looks cheaper option because they are going through funding stage.
Hmm... the LattePanda I linked offers two PCIe slots (one 4x + one 2x) and a CPU that's roughly 3x faster than the Zimaboard
Also double the eMMC storage, and integrated wifi / bluetooth, AND an integrated Arduino Leonardo (which is what all those GPIO pins are connected to)
Any killer features on the Zimaboard I'm missing?
hmm.. I'm requesting POE to run the board instead of 12V/3A adapter.
Heh, does the Zimaboard have built-in PoE?
LattePanda doesn't appear to have an exact specs-match for the Zimaboard, though this $188 version is close (give or take): https://www.dfrobot.com/product-1908.html
LattePanda Delta Edition uses Intel 8th generation Celeron N4100 processor which is the perfect choice in terms of features and price as a main robotics controller, interactive project core, IoT edge device or AI brain.
yeah. i'm comparing it with the same model.
zima has more cores/threads but still older celeron processor. I guess at $140.. you make peace with it? 😄
Yeah, I checked that out. The core/thread count doesn't mean shit. lol
The LattePanda with a 2-core/4-thread i3 beats the pants off of the lower-end 4-core/4-thread Celeron version
Faster single and multi-threaded scores
Look up the PassMark score of each chip for a rough idea
yeah.. i'm wondering if you're running docker containers on it and having more cores/thread might help?
Not according to the passmark scores. lol
i3 is definitely better than celeron. hope they incorporate that soon. i'm sure they'll jackup the prices then.
now you are making me think should I back out being a backer on this project? lol
On the up side... you can already get a single-board x86 computer that meets or exceeds the kickstarter specs for not much more money 😛
Granted, they aren't an exact specs-match, but you have two m.2 (which can be adapted to PCIe) expansion slots to fix that. lol
Slap a quad-SFP+ card on there and still have an m.2 slot leftover for an NVMe drive. See how far you can push it as a 10gbps router 😛
Might not need the NVMe drive with the 32/64GB of onboard eMMC, now that I think about it
Options, lots of options

oh and morning
Hi everyone, I'm new to homeassistant and after a week of trying to setup dickens without succes I try to reach out hoping to find some help as I can't figure out on how to set it up my dd-wrt router is running a VPN and perhaps this is the issue but I'm not sure
@obtuse dirge Worth reading the channel topics 😉 This is the one channel where HA is off-topic
If Dickens is an #add-ons-archived see #add-ons-archived
If it's a custom component see #integrations-archived
If it's something else see #general-archived and explain better 😉
Oh sorry my bad also new to discord 🤪 thanks
oh right, the DS18B20 is adressable with a single wire
I was wondering how many I could run off a single nodemcu
but that would be all
🤣

They're way too clever
She's using it in the right context too
My daughter talks my native dialect when she speaks to me, but speaks normalized norwegian randomly 🤣
By the time they are in 5th grade, they will think they are smarter than their parents. Just wait.... 😂
lol
held a docker presentation for my collegues today
now making one for kubernetes and ansible... while learning it
I should get paid more 🤔
You can take notes from my blog 😂
now that was an interesting bug, one memory stick says 127c and overheat protection kicked in 🤣
pretty sure the temp sensors for memory are on the system board
need to find some diagrams
oh nice, now it disabled all memory banks for CPU2

Taming noodle soup part 2
*verktyget
värktyget is roughly instrument of pain... actually, never mind
Intel graphics cards have entered the chat...
Not high end, but that's GTX 1050 level performance... in a single-slot passively cooled package.
That's impressive for its own reasons
I'm really curious to see how their high-end cards work out
but what is the price 🤔
Being able to install the latest Quicksync encoder/decoder in any system would be incredibly handy
This would instantly be the baseline card to run for Plex transcoding
Part 3. Hope you agree that it is better than before!
such long cables wow
also, I do prefer kroneterminals over screw terminals
nice, I've been able to deploy kube fully through ansible
and I was able to deploy HA with load balancer

Looks like the Intel Xe DG1 does support Quicksync 👀
Well, that just became my top pick for installing in my Plex server...
Considering it appears to go head to head with a GTX 1050 (non-Ti)... Probably around $150
@clear ferry got the use the connection they send, the junction boxes were IDC though :&
I want a new season of JoJo
It would be neater if I could have pulled all new cable, no junction boxes etc, but it is what it is!
See how useful raccoons thumbs are now?
Also, that intel card is nice, wonder if it can be used with virtual machines, for quicksync "passthrough"
should be both possible with VMs and docker containers
Parts are going out to OEMs. We might see retail cards soon
Would be nice with a ryzen with one of those for quicksync (blue iris)
Fingers crossed!
Yeah, I was thinking about AMD systems as well, since most of them lack integrated graphics
Have they stopped doing that ?
Or even Intel HEDT systems (like my desktop), which also lack an iGPU
I haven't seen a consumer AMD in years
AMD still makes APUs, but they're not what you'd usually buy for a gaming machine
Intel throws in an iGPU on pretty much everything except their high end HEDT platform
Granted, you're usually running a big discreet GPU in such systems, so you wouldn't notice much difference, but having an iGPU comes in handy sometimes
Case in point, being able to run video transcoding on the iGPU with minimal impact on the CPU or dGPU
Still exists as the Xeon Phi product line
They're used as coprocessors in supercomputers
Hi guys, i am a longtime user of HA and just recently updated to the latest version (i was on 0.9something)
which channel is best to post in about Tasmota
Tasmota itself?
Ready to use custom firmware for ESP8266 devices (including Sonoff)
Docs:

#diy-archived or their Discord
The Tasmota #integrations-archived would be #integrations-archived
But also ... @coral coyote ... please read the channel topics 😉
well i did, but i can't see much about tasmota even after searching
The GH app is so unintuitive. Can add devices to a room from an integration, but you cant remove the device from the integration without unlinking everything 🤦♂️
i figured this is a weird request
There's no support for Home Assistant here - please look at the other channels for that, and #330990055533576204 if it's a question about the HA Blue. If you can't work out which is relevant, start in #general-archived

🤔
why is this the second night I poped in here to yoiu saying that to someone tink
Because ... reading is hard?

odd maybe it was dejavu cause I couldn't find it in search. i swear yesterday or the day before i opened discord to you saying that line If you can't work out which is relevant, start in #other lol
right after the topic command
Yeah, I've done that a few times
He does that 6 times per hour anyway
Anyone else got Home Connect? So many switches for the hundreds of different of settings for dryer/washing machine 🤣
just have the bot auto respond to the phrase "which channel" and it should cover over 90% of it for you
I use it in my washing machine
I think i've got about 40 switches for all the different settings lol
Home connect? The #integrations-archived ?
and ive never used a single one lmao
Correct, but just random off topic chat
I dunno. It has a channel.
atx going on about his HPE stuff is random off topic chat
You are random
you really still calling that bucket of melted snow with a spritz of taxi air freshener a washing machine?
i mean, if every random conversation has to go in a specific channel when its general chat and has nothing to do with HA, everything is going to be out of context 🤷♂️ Its not a support question 🙂
DONE
Thank you
What are they?
never seen L door hinges before
Sonoma, standard in Sweden, it is a door that opens towards you, an internal door
@hot roost Alarm/ door entry hybrid addressable input output cards.
Ahhhh 🙂
The best bit now. Does it work? 🤣
Yeah, l hinges are pretty standard in Scandinavia
Think I've seen them in France and Germany too

At the hospital for a checkup, so much hand disinfectant everywhere
What other kinds are used? They look just like most household hinges in the UK too
Murica style
Probably in feet
And angles in inches
And comes with a premium to install

Was going to say, looks like a heavy duty butt hinge that. Just a different style 🙂
@clear ferry how many times did you break ansible
"Oh boi" 🤣
We use those for cupboards
same here, but our door ones are super sized
What method of kubernetes deployment did you use
You mean you just threw it at the wall and hoped it stuck?
yes, just like your Microsoft Graph integration

nothing more fancy than this @hushed basalt https://github.com/atxbyea/kubeplay/tree/main
Start using configMaps... better yet, create your own CRDs 😊

You don’t have those in your k8s training material?
I thought you are creating one for your team
I did some powerpoint presentations and explain fundamentals
they will probably never deploy it, I just want them to know the concepts and flows
PowerPoint 🤢
I see configmaps now, these look useful
I thought he did this crap in between HP breakdowns as a hobby. something to keep his brain cells from deteriorating from always having to fix the same crappy pc manufacture stuff
HPE = HP
Check out operators - thats a neat architecture in K8s.
accept it
that’s where the real meat is
Where did the name Lovelace come from? Googling the name is...questionable 😄
I love when pet owners buy indoor cameras with two way audio so they can check in on thier pets and honestly believe those animals are gonna listen to you telling them no over a speaker lol
Like they even listen when you tell them no in person
@hot roost it was a made up name. Someone got up and decided to name it that way.
|| going to say something, but decided to redact 😆||
Nothing to do with Ada?
In Swedish and all 🙂
Eww. Sverige.
Ha, snap!
It makes sense. Just as hard to read the manual for Lovelace than for IKEA furnitures 😮
DS1 Synthesizer
The DS1 is my version of the simplest oscillator synthesizer created by Look Mum No Computer. Here's a video going over LMNCs design, and a page with more info on the circuit.
I've modified the circuit by adding individual volume controls for each oscillator, so that they can be mixed together at different levels. I've also added...

Does anyone have any suggestions for thermostats that are very integration-friendly with homeassistant and available in the USA?
Preferably battery powered, I don't have a C wire.
#hardware-archived would know
Oh, I thought that channel was for support of devices you already had.
There's no support for Home Assistant here - please look at the other channels for that. If you can't work out which is relevant, start in #general-archived.
If it's a question about the HA Blue start in #330990055533576204.

def not here atleast
when are you going to change the topic to shitposting or gtfo @clever mortar ? 🤣
I may change the channel name to #please_read_the_topics_dammit
This server is a fantastic study on overtaxonification -- I am zero for like, 20, on figuring out the right channel first.
If you don't know, #general-archived is the official dumping ground
I wish we had more channels
But, 90% of the time the topic makes it pretty clear
That’s awesome!!!
@clever mortar I'm not trying to be combative, but out of curiosity -- where did I run afoul of the topic? I didn't ask for support, but a product suggestion.
corona is impactful for travel expenses, usually I would have $600-1000 a month in travel expenses to reimburse, now I have at best $100 🤣
Well, this is the thou shalt not talk about HA related things channel 😉
And you were directed to #hardware-archived
Which is a good place to ask these things
that is true too
@forest edge
Also, the redirect was pretty gentle by the standards of this channel 🤣
sssssh don't wake @deft pewter
Sure, and like I said, I'm not being combative -- but would you consider a product suggestion a "support" question?
I know a Prusa is pretty much cheating, but that just took me four tries.
For integration-friendly with homeassistant yes
You mentioned the banned word
I looked at the prusa, but for hobbyist and tinkering the cost didn't make sense to me
everything i been reading for the past x amount of years I "considered" getting one was always lead back to the ender and ender pro
The ender seems to be a really good machine.
The enders are good, but the thing about a Prusa is that it will just work right.
even in norway where it is 2x the price of the US
cheap these days too
If you have a cheapo printer, you will spend more time continuously attempting to get repeatable results whereas the Prusa just kind of -- works right the first time.
I paid $346 for it
ender pro goes on sale for like under 200 here
eh, I seldom tune the ender anymore, but I've had it for 6 months, now to ... convert it to direct drive
and that is the one with the silent motor upgrades
yeah, the TMC2130 was manna from heaven in that regard
Yeah. No complaints with Ender. I pretty much changed everything except the stepper motors. I am sending all the receipts to @clear ferry
there is nothing I could ever print that would warrant the money, space taken and waiting for hours to see if it was a fail or not lol
that meme is dumb
I have six 3d printers but they're now all in various states of disarray, and most of my side-gig business is with my laser cutter instead. I much prefer digital fabrication over additive manufacturing
lmao @forest edge
for some reason it's easier to take material away than it is to cajole it to go into place properly the first time
a cnc wood carver.. that would be cool to have. you could make bank with that
yep, I have one of those.
I should 3d print a CNC machine
the MPCNC and Root CNC are two really good 3d printed cnc's.
It would be great to build some small musical instruments
Heard worst reviews about that Ryan guy from mpcnc.
They're great for learning on, but, once you get into CNC you really start chasing things like tolerances, and wiggly 3d prints are not great for repeatable tolerances
before long you're investing in 10k mills and wondering where your hobby turned into a job
it doesn't just magically land in your lap
half the battle is drumming up customers
if you were making more a month printing crap than you could at any job you would land, I would be ok with wondering why my hobby turned into a job
hell I would make a conveyor belt and and set that shit on loop lol
To be honest I'd rather keep my day job where I make more than I'll ever make selling 3d printed tchotchkys while I sit on my butt and prognosticate 😛
not talking 3d printed stuff.. the cnc wood carver
saw some video a dude did where he was making like 30k a month or some shit
was insane
throws a block of wood into the machine, hits a button then goes watches opra or some shit

just remember that youtubers lie to you sometimes.
sure, but also know that wood carving isn't really a mian thing these days. thats why stuff you see is pricey
shit, people who depend on likes and subscribes lie ?
you should put a sign next to your printer with like and subscribe so when you paste that link to watch your shit we can get a small luagh
I'm not saying it is impossible, it is very possible to make 30k a month doing wood signs. But you also have to consider the fact that there's a very small number of companies that want to buy 100 engraved signs from you, and they're not doing it once a month
Ok, so 3d wooden reliefs. How many people are buying those, do you think?
i have no idea. didn't even know that crap was made by machines till i saw that video.. use to be a hand carving art, or chainsaws etc
🤣
I own a company doing things like those bald eagles, though mine are more "I want one piece of this custom thing" so I don't deal in large economies of scale, but when one of those reliefs takes, lets say, five hours to CNC, and then x amount of time to finish properly, there's a lot of cost in making something like that. And if I want to make a profit, I have to sell it to you for a markup so that I actually have a reason to do it. If he's selling those bald eagles at $1000 per piece, he might have a 30k month, sure. If he has multiple machines and multiple employees he can make more, faster and make even more money, but then what's the limiting factor one wants to consider? At what point is it no longer "this guy on youtube made 30k a month carving signs!" I guess what i'm saying is, if he knows how to make 30k a month making some 3d reliefs I'd love to take him out to dinner and pick his brain on exactly where that magic is happening in the process.
Its all about finding that niche that has a wide body of potential customers that nobody else is in yet
Its possible he's The Bald Eagle King, who knows? Heh. Maybe I need to make bald eagles.
I'll keep my $10k a month and not have to deal with people who want bald eagles 🤣
maybe he just found something many people like
as I said wood carvbings isn't really a main thing these days
I know, right? Sometimes I just think about paying the fee to dissolve my LLC and just make random shit for fun.
Definitely don't want to see atx's 'bald eagle'
so if someone wanted something like that made out of a wood, they would pay for it
How much would you charge for a life-size carving of a tree?
Does the tree need to have a bald eagle in it?
this last Christmas lowes here picked up a order from a local who makes those ceramic Christmas trees. the ones where there is a light at the bottom and little plastic pegs that look like colored lights that fit in holes around the tree and light up
those things were made on the hella cheap and I have no doubts lowes paid a pretty penny for them cause they wanted an arm and leg for them
Bald eagle is optional
I bring that up cause my mother use to do that stuff years and years ago and made those trees herself and the ones we had were way nicer
@deft pewter why is this 🤢 ? https://static01.nyt.com/images/2018/12/16/fashion/16CERAMICTREES-1/16CERAMICTREES-1-jumbo.jpg
that's cute.
unless you mean christmas is 🤢
one thing I haven't done yet is try making stuff out of ceramic/pottery
the tree above was alittle closer to what we made, and this is what lowes was selling for like 60 a pop https://s.yimg.com/aah/christmastreehill/lighted-ceramic-christmas-tree-battery-operated-with-multi-colored-lights-7-5-inch-9.jpg
crasp wrong p[icture
just 3d print it @forest edge
um no
no it wouldn't be the same look lol
What do white collar tech consultants actually do
vapor smoothed green ABS definitely would have a similar look
Deloitte, Modis etc
I think there is money in "bald eagles". We have this children show called "John Dillermand" (John Penisman) who have the world largest penis ect. Now all the bakeries have startet making penis-cakes which they charge massivly for.
@hushed basalt I can answer that! I was an Azure consultant at $lastjob.
even if you didn't fuck up and allow the acetone to melt the whole thing, you would still see if was a plastic nightmare lol
I watched a youtube video from Deloitte talking about aws transformations
Like 60 DKK (~10 USD) - normally you can buy a similar cake in half size for like 15 DKK
Cakes like this: https://images.jfmedier.dk/images/8/8a/8a1/8a1c0c1f-f60e-4771-ba5d-a59cf1dbb278_43_90_0_0_1673_1255_600_450_14d52029.jpg
And it was just buzz words
@hushed basalt my job primarily was walking into a company, seeing that they still were making backup copies of source by copying and renaming the folder to something.backup and spending at least 40 hours just trying to help people believe there was a better way
Exactly @clear ferry 😆
The #1 thing I learned from being a consultant is that no matter how bad you may think your companies' practices are with regards to any metrickable factor, there is definitely a company that is worse.
all of them are
It's the companies that never engage with consultants I'd be scared about
No fresh blood..get people in as grads only
So the entire company is filled with people who spent their whole career in there
Plus a mix of seagull leaders who come in, make a lot of noise and leave a lot of shit behind
now if we're talking management consultants, those are a different story altogether. But its fun to make fun of them because people think "oh yeah, that person's paid to tell other people what to do" but in reality, companies fail because the people running them don't fully understand how to run them, and that's where management consultants can really help.
I guess my biggest gripe is with consulting firms who just bullshit a lot
I have no problem with consulting itself
Its people who say things like "I'm good at tech, it's obvious I'll be a good IT director" that scare me, because the venn diagram union-set between (people who are good at technology) and (people who understand how to lead) is razor small.
there is a reason I turn down management positions
sometimes even with training it is difficult -- some people just don't have the right mindset and its hard to train into people how to think differently.
2+2 is 4 minus 1 that's 3 ... quick maths!!!
Like atx

I have recently installed tasmota ir to an esp01 with an ir transmitter to make my tv and set top box smart. Can anyone point me to docs about integrating these to Home Assistant?
We can point you to a support channel. #the-water-cooler isn't one of them.
If you want to integrate things, try #integrations-archived
No-one slipped yet, right?
Like?
So?
You'll get help when someone that's willing to help decides to, not when you beg for it.
But yeah... I can see you were patient and waited a whole minute before reminding us in the non-HA channel that you need our assistance.
I'm out of salt
D'oh. I've been wondering why a TV show wasn't showing up on Sonarr despite being announced a while back.
It's a movie 🤦♂️
Space Sweepers. Looks like it'll have a similar vibe to Lost in Space, which is why I made the connection that it was a show...
Beta day? Maaayyyyybeeee?
I have no idea
once in a little while though
@deft pewter will it have a creepy pedophile and a robot stopping the creeper from creeping on the young boy?
Haha. For a moment I wondered wtf you were talking about. I hope there will be robots. I hope there will not be paedophiles.

You woke atx when you said the P word.

What? "suPPort"?

Pinis?
Is that baby covered in lard? 😐

I'd say it's only third world countries like Sweden having trouble but...

Polychlorinated biphenyl?
Wow. How wide do you pull your legs?
The timing is perfect too. Was about to post this:
@last cedar... dat you?
I'll be interested to hear if yours works. I'm sure my parts were all fine until I butchered them 😄
Haven't had a chance to troubleshoot yet.
I am guessing backwards LED
I have trouble feeling my fingers a lot of the times so inserting these LED's is a bitch right now, lol
fumble fuck
I was really careful with the LED's. I put them all backwards.
lmao. I was teaching my girl to solder last night and she nearly forgot the heat shrink every time so she was undoing it nonstop
what about the LED symbols on the circuit board :/
That is what I have been going off of and now you have me worried
what about the long legs?
You think I can read the board? 😄
I think they were all incorrectly marked. Long leg to negative.
Is that wrong?
no but you're making me scared
That's how I did it too... but there was definitely a note in the instructions saying that wasn't the normal way if you read the markings.
if it doesn't work based on the markings I will throw it away after stealing the 555
That'll be an expensive 555 🤣
Amazon reviews are great:
I am giving this two stars instead of one because I will acknowledge that I am very new to soldering and some parts not working are probably due to my inexperience and, by the time I was done with this, I did build up a good deal of mechanical aptitude in working with the soldering iron.
So they wanted to give it one star. They gave it two stars. They admit it fully served its purpose as a practise kit in giving them a 'good deal of mechanical aptitude'. WTF is wrong with some people? 🤣
pissed me properly off
Long leg in the square hole goes against convention, right?
The arrows on the printing are fine, it's the square hole that's in the wrong place.

Thought of you while watching this
You already have a mini drill...

That drill's a great idea but really awful execution.
@deft pewter parcour!

@obsidian mirage There's no support for Home Assistant here - please look at the other channels for that. If you can't work out which is relevant, start in #general-archived.
If it's a question about the HA Blue start in #330990055533576204.

You mean like I did... 🤔
lol I noticed it after 😉
🤦♂️
@deft pewter missing 1 yellow ring
@night zodiac Now implement a PWM function so the lights fade from one to the next, rather than just turning on/off in order 👀
big pass, haha
mono, it's alright. I definitely fucked up by trying to push every single LED in at once
Not like PWM is that hard. lol
Like, I've implemented shitty PWM in pure python before XD
it's all chips
Yeah. I don't have big hands and I still only added a couple of components to the board at once.
Oh, it's all chip logic, no microcontroller?
Just a giant 555 timer project?
Basically
Solder practise. I bought one because I've barely soldered since high school. Bu copied me when he saw how fun it was.
I'm guessing the small 8-leg chip is a 555
I almost bought different LED's before I ordered it
The mystery chip is a CMOS Decade Counter, apparently: https://www.electronicshub.org/ic-4017-decade-counter/
The CD4017 is a CMOS Decade counter IC. CD4017 is used for low range counting applications. It can count from 0 to 10 (the decade count). The circuit designed by using this ic will save board space and also time required to design the circuit. CD4017 is as ‘Johnson 10 stage decade counter’. Features The supply […]
very niche chip it seems, haha
Basically, as it counts up, each of its 10 output pins go high one at a time
it is counting to 10 for me like a boss
That would explain why every column of LEDs is only 10 long. lol
I mean, that's actually a thing, but I'd just size a capacitor for each row of LEDs so they fade out on their own...
You just can't make it too large, otherwise fast clock rates will just make the whole thing appear always-on, because the cap will never fully discharge
I probably have enough capacitors but I don't want to waste
my office is a mess 😦
I usually clean it once a day but it has been 3 days
I getcha, though it's a good board to test such things out on 😛

Fun with analog circuits. lol
I'm surprised the kit didn't just include some capacitors to make the scrolling effect smoother, tbh
roborock needs to do a long hard succ in here
My Roborock was named "Succ Machine" from the longest time. lol
It's now named Moira, after the Overwatch character
I was about to have one named Monica Lewinsky until I saw my girl roll her eyes to the back of her head
That joke has been beaten to death
exactly
it was just going to be named Monica
it is now named roborock
i heard a whole fight from smash bros before I got close enough to the monitor to read your message
lol
You can't just put a shrine to atx in another room. It must have its own room.
I need a ton of shelves and tubs
I have just a few large tubs so I make a mess every time I get something
@night zodiac 🤔
I bought baskets for my desk about a year ago
lol, you pointed towards the pull strings to my ceiling fan
he doesn't know what a ceiling fan is. in cali it's either some dude wearing a diaper moving a palm leaf up and down in anothers direction or nothing at all
I did what I could with what I had
desk goes up and down so wires need to float to an extent on main desk
my temp/humidity sensors arrive tomorrow hopefully as long as USPS forwards my mail instead of return it to sender
wut
where is the disco ball?
If they return to sender they become more efficient
Delivery costs eliminated
More processing, faster throughput. Better faster more often
I finally got around to flashing the rtsp firmware on my wyze cams tonight.
and got automations setup for them too with the motion sensors.
gonna save me pennies a year on the back porch lights being on all the time.
🤣
dafang or stock
just the regular firmware with rtsp from wyze
I didn't know there was another option
how are you capturing motion alerts in HA? through a dvr?
nm you said motion sensors
I misunderstood heh
binary_sensor:
- platform: ffmpeg_motion
input: -rtsp_transport http -i rtsp://admin:blah@192.168.1.99/live
name: Front_Camera_Motion
extra_arguments: -pred 1 -q:v 2
changes: 10
reset: 10
with that
found on a blog or something
nice
works perfectly
I have a few wyze cams but all the ones I actually set up for alerts etc use dafang and not stock
automations were a pain to figure out as always
the state of the sensor says "Detected" for motion and "Clear" for none.
but in the automation you have to use off and on instead
thats because of the class
yeah I figured that out. binary_sensor is either on or off
Can someone tell me where to find the #alexa-notifications channel in here??
@distant tundra #voice-assistants-archived
thanks!
Ouf woke up at 4am to my Philips TV turning on with full brightness for the second day this week
home assistant assisting you in waking up
Heya
Thing is I only have a Chromecast ultra and a Samsung soundbar that I have been having for ages now
Nothing new or added
No settings changes
As it's the same time two days in a row what I can thing of is some software update or check. But there seems to be nothing.
Might be... If this continues I'll put a power plug on the fkr and just turn it off between 3-4 haha. Home Assistant is king.
What is this
Has support been going on in #the-water-cooler
@deft pewter will be furious
Well, it's really very small 😛

I've been able to forward ports, expose services and deploy replicas so far
so I think it is moving along smoothly
it's easy when you have vsphere atleast
every time I break something I just kill all the vms
and respin them
I should get MAPR up and running....
to integrate into my kube-lab
oh, kube supports so much nice storage, like FC
Yeah I used proxmox for the same thing
proxmox 🤢
Paying money 🤢
I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore.
Hmm anyone thing openthread will ever compete with zigbee/zwave?
I like the idea of it, but I can't see hue or ikea switching any time soon
unless their devices can be upgraded I suppose.
pretty sure that will be closed to only participating companies
or atleast require some kind of "certification"
but i might be wrong
I think it could take over
In a decade or two...
People aren't going to rush out and replace what they have. It'll be a slow transition.
so you mean, be sold to a lot of consumers over the next two years, then silently killed by google ?
The reason I like it is that it's all standard IP stuff
I'm also sceptical about the native ip stack in thread devices, and native ipv6, where most consumers struggle to "secure" their existing networks
Who cares about IP? It's just a convention.
There's nothing wrong with how the Z stuff works. Just needs a little more standardisation.
Doesn't need to be replaced with an entirely new protocol.
They should've supported the alliance, not made yet another competing one.
the ip stack can make sense for enterprise or vendors, but for consumers... eh
Not saying anything is wrong with the z stuff. Just saying I like the idea of using an established standard with well known protocols
Well known... 🤣
that's the whole idea of the OSI model
Most users couldn't even tell you what an IP address is.
or not zwave though 🤔
@clear ferry It uses the same layer 1 and 2
layer 3
Did someone say lasagna
Man that is still too uncanny valley :S
I looked up that bit. Maybe you mean Thread, which is closed?
OpenThread is then an open version of it.... weird :/
well, "open" I guess they have to confine to something
to be allowed to connect to the edge device
Not sure, as the slaesh stick will run an OpenThread router
🤷
from what I can read, it's just that google paid for access to the Thread protocol, decided "Meh this is going to slow" and re-implemented it foss.
might be reading that wrong tho
google mostly wants stuff for profit, not the goodness of their hearts
Well that didn't take off
My interview is in an hour too. Are you interviewing me? 🤢
Fine by me. It's not gay if the tips don't touch.
start to wonder if there are email problems, when you haven't recieved an email in 3 hours
Your email works. Just no-one loves you.
@clear ferry Is my monthly catchup with my line manager a good time to let him know I'm actively applying for other jobs? 🤣
That soldering work. 🤢
Sorry Americans I mean SODDER
Haha, no. But he's not come in here celebrating his new job, so I think they hated him.
I always seem to be on the wrong end of interviews lately. Interviewer rather than interviewee. Gonna see if I can change that.
Every time you speak is a good time to mention that
Haha. I don't wanna say it too often or it'll lose its effect.
And this time it's true... put in an application this morning.
Same business, different department.
I mention it whenever I get an offer, so a few times a year
Sodder sounds like an insult though
Go home you sodder
I never answer the recruiters that get in touch. Until recently, I wasn't motivated to move.
I have never had a recruiter come for me 🤣
Now that my managers are talking about us going back to the office full-time, I'm ready to change. I want permanent WFH.
Or at least for it to be my choice when I visit the office. Not for them to dictate how many days I'm allowed to work from home.
appears the job role I got interviewed for today is "mostly working from home, current amount of travel is unknown"
Yeah... 'mostly'. That's not vague at all 😄
But I did say "two weeks away or 2-3 days every week is not acceptable for me"
'Home-based with travel' would be clearer. At least that means no offices 😄
yeah we are closing our offices WW anyway
so that isn't an issue
We are all designated WFH
I think I'd be happy with 2-3 days a week of travel... but I've never done it, so maybe I just have no idea how tiring it is.
tiring is not the issue, I don't want to be away from my daughter that much 🤣
I'm just fed up with the differences in culture across my business. Some departments are so relaxed about WFH (even pre-Corona) and others are really anal about spending 5 days a week in the office.
yeah man...first proto looks like shit but won't surface anyway right....right?
No kids here and I would like some time away from the wife 🤣
I would take this job in a heartbeat if I didn't have kids
and my wife would approve it
🤣
Get out and travel you sodder
if you have a cat then i've got good news for you: it'll appreciate it too.... mine's already giving me strange looks like "wtf are you doing here in MY territory all day?"
Our cat's finally used to us being home all day. I think it'd be more freaked out if we started leaving the house.
It's pretty needy now. Sits on the wife's lap (or laptop) while she works.
I also brought up the question about OOH travel compensation, which was my main issue with the last offer I got, which basically meant a lot less per year for me (€20-30k a year) pre covid atleast... and they were very vague 🤣
If I'm going to do a lot of travel, I expect compensation
not just "the job role expects you to work outside of regular hours"

I always try to schedule any significant travel in work time. I don't mind the odd hour here or there, but not when they're taking the proverbial. Or I'll start late/finish early to offset the time
Yeah, sorry, I ain't doing an 18 hour day just because you think that's reasonable
My main grudge with my employer is that they're moving office location soon and I'll have an extra 10 hours a week of travel. I don't know why increased commuting isn't considered the same as business travel. It's not my choice to do it.
Fortunately all the clients for my new job are in the city
I'll be fucked if I'm spending another 10 hours a week unpaid...
That's an extra 20%+ working time, assuming a UK standard sub 40 hour week
Indeed. And that's before you consider the additional costs.
I only travel to and from customers inside office hours, I never leave home until 8 in the morning, and if I travel past 16 it is overtime 🤣
At least when my lot moved office it reduced my commute, by about 5 minutes 🤣
I had a 7 minute door-to-door journey before. 70 minutes a week... that was acceptable. I chose the location when I took the job.
10 hours a week is a massive no from me.
And as a fucking software engineer, why do I need to go to the office anyway?
I'd kill for a sub 10 minute commute again. When I have to go to the office it's about 45 minutes each way
80% of my customer visits are 1h in 1h out travel
Gimme an internet connection so I can Google/SO and I'm good.
and I go to the office once a month before covid
I would love this. Show my face for the occasional meeting and to grab a coffee with people.
I go to the office primarily for the team
When all this is over I'll likely go in twice a week
if
I'll be in on Mondays and Thursdays unless something is going down
I guess it's different if you have direct reports but there's no-one under me... I don't need to be there for people, I just need to get my work done.
Anyway, commuting back to the 'office' now, catch you later.
Even if you have direct reports, if they're not kids they can survive without you for a day or two
they make rubber leggings to use with rubber boats and I had almost bought a set of those once. but truthfully I was only walking through swamp mud up to my knees a couple of times. wasn't worth the investment
boast = boots
man when i get tired i cannot type for shit lol
Waders
waders are the whole thing, from foot up
Yeah, I've never seen them as just legs TBH
these were to be used with just the boots
3 degrees fahrenheit = -16.11 degrees celsius!
Some reddit image host is down or something. Every image I click is fucked
So warm atx
Don't forget sun screen
.c2f -16
-16 degrees celsius = 3.2 degrees fahrenheit!
.c2f 13
13 degrees celsius = 55.4 degrees fahrenheit!
-13 degrees celsius = 8.6 degrees fahrenheit!
You okay?
he is having trouble understanding why his ambient temps isn't reflecting as the same temp as outer space in fahrenheit
We ran out of our good coffee so I schedule an emergency delivery of some stuff from Aldi that the internet says is decent.
I tried some dunkin donuts beans but that is for the trash
I just go shopping once a week
amazon foods actually has some decent stuff like their oatmeal
Amazon closed their market like last week
The grocery part
But we order our coffee from Montana. It is usually fine.
My girl just made some espresso for Tiramisu and we ran out before I could order more
the pantry separation was discontinued but the items you can still buy in the main website
i use amazon brand coffee and have it ship out a 32oz bag every month
its "ok" coffee and cheap
Do you heathens all drink dark roast?
i usually do medium or light
🤢
light has more caffeine
Marginally more caffeine but way more flavor.
though i do like deathwish coffee
I love that you can actually taste the fruity notes when you don't burn the beans
I love you
My girl accidentally added shit to my coffee out of the blue the other day. Ever since I have been trying to tell her the black coffee is way better. She like ruins it but oh well. That is what she wants.
I experienced how she drinks coffee
I do a clunk of milk
tried a lot of beans but the only brand i really enjoy is lavazza, the 8/10 strength one
Sorry to hear that, Bu. She's not marriage material, move on.
tried cheap ones, tried expensive ones...now i'm in the middle field...wifey doesn't like it that much but she knows that arguing over coffee with me is hopeless 😄
heavy creams in the US ? is that like 55% fat ?
lavazza is the only one i can't drink black. way too bitter and burnt
basically lard
Try Redbird blue jaguar
It is how I get everyone hooked
Roasted to order
Blue Jaguar grew out of the popularity of the Brazil Daterra Sweet Blue, which many people use as a single origin espresso. Because Sweet Blue is not as complex as a blend, though, we thought a blend using it as a base could have potential. So after many trials and much reformulating based on testers' comments, here it is. Building on the Sweet ...
it all really depends on the machine you use. fact.
It all depends on all of the variables
i figured not so much on the water but some people may say otherwise
it's about taste and that's very different across the board
I only use distilled just so my machine stays fresh
Acidic though
I like it
I have the ninja coffee bar
Certified
Ninja CM407 Specialty Coffee Maker, with 50 oz. Thermal Carafe, Black and Stainless Steel Finish https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PGR2Z5N/ref=cm_sw_r_u_apa_fabc_Z8XJ64EGKF7HAPQYSW33?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
got a siemens eq600 years ago. does the job, has water filter in the tank and is easy to clean. filters are cheap and consumables also. also very servicable. had to clean out the grinder once because of built-up coffee fat.... although finding the right beans was a little bit of a pain. before that i used to drink ground coffe from a cheapo filter machine
i thought of getting a more ~~hipster ~~ barista style machine and then i reminded myself that i need coffee in the morning like immediately or the world around me is going to have a really bad time.
that thing looks awesome
I highly suggest it. Great for single cups
It is smart on how it adds water
My coffee station
Hurry up instacart
oh i see ... all manual there 😉
well - that's something i would do no matter what. ready made ground coffee is almost certainly filled with crap. tastes like soaked paper in most cases. EXCEPT when properly made with a percolator. these things can make the worst coffee taste good
i love holmes on homes
he just ripped his son a new ass for wanting to hardwood floor every single room (aside from bathrooms) and use no carpet anywhere lol
carpet is awesome
disgusting
carpet has way more beneficial points than hardwood
i use a slightly different version of that one
gotta love customers "oh no, my 2014 server that I have never updated the firmware or drivers of had two drive failures 2 weeks apart, and now all my data is lost, I demand help"
well
- update your firmware, 2. set your server to phone home
problem solved
