i bought extra because i know i'll screw it up

That winery was cool, it was all aluminum rigid conduit. But some areas were stainless because it was close to food or wine. A 2 inch stick of aluminum rigid felt lighter than a three-quarter inch stick of stainless steel

sour escarp
#

at less than $8 for 3/4" i figured it'd be good

alpine spear

Right on

Like, yes you can put any attribute into an item

But you have to forward plan your access patterns so much

yup

lots of tradeoffs

alpine spear

See that’s where y’all lost me again lol

#

I have so much to learn about HA

sour escarp

what they discuss isn't HA specific

Oh lol. I figured it was a techie joke kind of equating to what we were talking about

Do any of you have recommendations on a certain YouTube or tutorial out there? I’ve been watching a lot, but it seems like HA has changed a lot.

#

give yourself a project

alpine spear
#

Okay, that’s kinda what I planned on doing with ESPHome and all these sensors I have

#

Stairway motion lights

#

Opposite animations for the LED’s whether you go up or down

#

Thanks guys

sour escarp
#

depends on what you're trying to accomplish and what you want to learn, I personally am not a huge fan of the ESP projects. chances are I can buy pre-built hardware that can do the same thing for just as cheap and can spend more of my time focusing on the software to make it do what I want

#

but if your goal is to learn more about electronics, enjoy soldering, etc then ESP might be a fun way to go

#

home automation is one of those things, you can go in many directions and none of them are wrong, just different

alpine spear
#

In the future I would probably go the Z wave route mostly. But when I first got into all the LED stuff, I ordered a crap ton of relays in motion sensors and light intensity sensors. Was thinking about playing around with that for a little while until I figure out what I want to do. I’ve also been learning woodworking so I’m super tied up with that

sour escarp
#

nice, yeah mess with what you have, only thing that can come out of it is a learning experience and possibly a cool project

alpine spear
#

I made this table basically to practice all the new woodworking tools I had purchased. Like a jointer and tablesaw.. In the future I would like to integrate wireless phone chargers, makes some sit down arcade tables that look like a modern coffee table with a flipped up. So the tv and joysticks will be underneath

sour escarp
#

nice, looks awesome

alpine spear
#

Thank you. I am so grateful to have had the Internet and all the cool people that are into electronics and DIY. I feel like I have so many damn skills now, just from using YouTube and Reddit lol

sour escarp
#

i have a lot of family members that are extremely talented carpenters but never had an interest myself

alpine spear
#

During quarantine

sour escarp
#

haha nice

#

i did some garage and ham radio projects during "quarantine"

alpine spear
#

I’m really enjoying it because I love the craftsmanship and detail of bending conduit. It looks like art when you’re done. I totally see similarities when I’m cutting angles on wood, taking measurements etc.

#

I learned how to use sketch up and design the sofa frame, someone on Reddit used it and added photo realism to make it look this nice

wet pilot
#

man, that third beer wasn't the best idea

sour escarp
#

why not?

#

3 beers seems reasonable

wet pilot
#

a tall brown into 2 stouts

sour escarp

ah yeah, you're drinking the good stuff, i forgot

alpine spear
sour escarp
#

but still, 3 is reasonable

alpine spear

Just take a shot of whiskey it’ll smooth out

sour escarp
#

alpine spear
#

But this radio is from like 1969, and I’m going to solder in an Alexa chip, and using my old Bose Bluetooth speaker inside. Then maybe some edge kit acrylic LED’s like a jukebox

wet pilot
#

eh kinda late

alpine spear
#

Oh OK, then save that whiskey for the morning

wet pilot
#

sour escarp
#

tyler i have an old radio here

alpine spear
#

Oh yeah?

sour escarp
#

old motorola

alpine spear
#

Sweeeet

sour escarp
#

but im kind of into motorolas

wet pilot
#

alpine spear
#

I love old electronics. And I’m kind of on this kick of wanting to have that 1950s but modern look in my house with gadgets? I don’t know like fall out or some thing

#

That’s badass

sour escarp
#

oh jeez, that isn't a motorola, it is a helicrafters, my bad

#

i should be punished by the radio gods for that

alpine spear
#

Hahaha

sour escarp
#

anyway

#

😄

alpine spear
#

I recently got the slide projector for five dollars. Still trying to think of what I can do to it

sour escarp
#

i recommend making a shelf for it 😛

alpine spear
#

Pretty much what I had in mind. I should probably sandblast it or get it powder coated or something

sour escarp
#

no way

#

old stuff deserves to be preserved the way it is

alpine spear
#

I saw a video a while back I think it was one of these, that someone used as a smart phone projector. I think he put a raspberry pi inside

#

I agree, and indecisive I guess there’s just random chips and scratches on the outside

sour escarp
#

that is what we call "character"

#

some call it patina

alpine spear
sour escarp
#

haha nice

alpine spear
#

I also have a bunch of old childhood toys mostly 90’s stuff. I was thinking about putting LEDs inside of the millennium falcon and hanging it somewhere or something

#

Can you tell I fell down a rabbit hole during quarantine?

sour escarp
#

looks like it, possibly ADHD, I can somewhat relate

alpine spear
#

I’m so glad I saved so much stuff, over the years. I recently just kind of went through everything since I had the time. There’s way more comics and cards than what you see here

sour escarp
#

apparently your quarantine was a lot longer than mine 😄

alpine spear
#

I went back to work a few times, it’s kind of easy to go in and out as a union electrician. I had a crazy girlfriend that moved out in June I think? Then I was like all right let’s do this. I’ve already learned the electronics and lighting and was just on the tip of getting into woodworking. Basically it’s all been a plan to be able to try to make money on the side especially if construction never gets slow again or a recession

#

I’ve had a side jobs keeping me busy lately too. I hooked up some LEDs behind the TV from my friend and also brand power from the subpanel to a new hot tub they got in the backyard a few days ago

#

It’s so much nicer working for yourself instead of some asshole foreman

sour escarp
#

being self employed has ups and downs like anything else

#

have been self employed for ~1.5 years now with one employee, it is a lot of responsibility... kind of wish i could just go get a regular job

alpine spear
#

That’s where I’m kind of in the middle. Union wages, pension, benefits are great. But construction is rough on your body if you plan to do it all of your life. I was thinking if I can learn all these little side skills and woodworking, maybe do six months construction work and six months making furniture or some thing

#

I definitely don’t want an employee, I need to be able to just drink beers and build the shit I create, in peace 😂

sour escarp
#

Yeah I hear ya. My brother is a foreman union iron worker. He doesn’t particularly like it and has the skills to do other things but benefits are good, has a nice annuity, retirement, etc.

#

And he is in close to 20 years now

#

A lot of those guys don’t make it to full retirement age, either they die or they retire out early. Not easy work though.

alpine spear
#

Yeah I’ve known multiple electricians that have passed away shortly after retiring. They say that happens a lot. That’s why I’m not one of those guys it’s always chasing overtime trying to make as much as I can. I only need just enough to live and have fun with Snowboarding lol

sour escarp
#

Haha alright, snowboarding where?

#

I tried once, didn’t go well.

alpine spear
#

Tahoe, I usually go to Kirkwood, but they got bought out by Vail Resorts a while back so you have to buy a triple pass with heavenly, Northstar, and Kirkwood altogether

#

This is actually the first year I didn’t buy a season pass in a decade. The resorts all shut down in early March last season, so used my season pass money to buy more woodworking tools lol

sour escarp
#

Ah alright so you’re in Northern California

alpine spear
#

In Lodi, a little south of Sacramento. I commute to the bay area for work, I lived in San Jose for a few years but I hate living in the bay area. I’d rather commute and be closer to the mountains

sour escarp

Over the last few months, I've really been getting serious about HA and adding devices. Realized today that that I have returned more products since starting this than the combined sum of the previous 5 years at least. Just ordering shit on a whim, trying it out, realizing it sucks and sending it back. I should know at this point in my life, buying the cheap shit just means you can afford more cheap shit but doesn't help achieve your goal. I just can't help seeing a good price point and giving it a go.

#

And the latest cheap shit I got is a pair of OSRAM RGB bulbs for the front porch for $10 a pop. Not living up to my expectations at the moment.

forest edge
#

honestly when it comes to "smart home" stuff price is not determining factor on rather something is good or not. Take light bulbs for example as you mentioned. You can find online reviews comparing rgb bulbs in great length from price to color accuracy and brightness and all of that and you will find that paying more does not mean you are getting better, but on the same note not all "cheap" bulbs are better either.

slow zenith
#

Which is why I give the cheap shit a go. I'm actually pretty happy with the EcoSmart bulbs I'm running in the basement. Though I don't know enough yet how to analyze the zigbee network traffic to ensure they are not causing issues. As for these Sylvania / Lightify / OSRAM bulbs, I'm looking at the APIs for OTA firmware right now to see if I can salvage them before I send em back.

Nothing wrong with buying them if you can afford them. I think it's ridiculous that there are people who complain about making their rent and still want the newest model...

And we only bought new this time because we were getting rid of two old cars (one was basically run into the ground, the other was written off in an accident).

clear ferry

Most ridicoulus thing I saw was at the university in my hometown, students (people aged 19-25) who complaint that they can't charge their EVs in the student apartments because there is no EV outlets, and have to pay parking at the school campus

Yup. Priorities.

#

I realise there are people that genuinely struggle to make ends meet... but then there are assholes that make poor life choices and expect handouts.

they don't become an "influencer" if you don't tho.. less likely for them to get free shit from companies and pull in what they preach

orchid rose
#

I don't mind the business itself, but it's just so cheesy

forest edge
#

I do, 90% of these turds will say whatever a company wants to make an easy living and in the process they not only screw people over with inadequate reviews but they are also effect the price of the product generally in the long run.

So what was that security thing and what custom component was being bad?

scenic radish
#

Custom components

#

I don't think they specified

night zodiac
#

"People asked for more information. We are currently investigating the scope of the issue. We will follow up with more details. Meanwhile, update Home Assistant." - frenck

#

in the comments

forest edge
#

yea it's vague. I won't even update till i know what exactly has been done cause i run a few custom components that i don't want to stumble around in the dark to get working again cause of some non disclosed change

shy comet
#

well custom components run like normal components with one exception

#

one is reviewed by someone to make sure its not misbehaving and the other can be anything without any review

#

i believe if you update and something was misbehaving youll probably get a log telling you which was at fault

night zodiac
#

yeah, it is a log under warn

#

pretty straightforward commit

Think I've finally re-created all my AppDaemon automations in native YAML. Just turned AppDaemon off and we'll see if everything still functions 😛

Good morning, I'm new here, been running HA for 3 years now, first on a pi, and now in a vm on an esxi nuc

#

Good morning and welcome! Did you update to 2021.1.2 yet?

amber shard

Thank you for the the ping, missed the news otherwise

#

And there's already an update available for the docker image that I use 🙏

I've been on a few other Discords that use it that way

heavy badge
#

which integrations were breached?

midnight adder
#

Would be nice to know what caused this update since the way it's worded it comes across like a custom integration was just found to be exploiting home assistant. 👀

If you cannot update Home Assistant at this time, we strongly advise you to disable all custom integrations.

turbid stirrup
#

you hang around better crowds than I do, then, Tink

clever mortar
#

Well, I'm sure details will be forthcoming in time

#

If I had to guess, I'd say that the devs don't want to give too much away right now

heavy badge
#

there's no reason to not say now

turbid stirrup
#

I guess vulnerabilities should only be disclosed after the main body of users has had the chance to upgrade, to prevent abuses

midnight adder
#

I mean have you seen the commit it doesn't really seem like that much of a security fix. 🤔

heavy badge
#

that would be on the integration not homeassistant no?

#

ah yes, let us visit the commit

midnight adder
#

If you have components this is effecting I feel you'd be better off just removing them than using a patch to try and prevent things like this. idk just feels like a weird way of dealing with this.

clever mortar
#

This is how you deal with possible vulnerabilities - you patch them 😛

midnight adder
#

This would be akin to knowing there is a bad program and instead of uninstalling it you just install antivirus to prevent the bad part working.

#

The antivirus at that point is the patch.

low harness
#

Disclosing the vulnerable custom components could alert a potential attacker of the problem, and allow them time to attack users who are not quick enough to remove them.

Are any of you going to import illegal goods into the US now: https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/01/15/us-government-blacklist-chinese-xiaomi-ban/

Or have you given up on buying Xiaomi Zigbee Products?

rare condor

Yeah same in Australia, I love Xiaomi hw, hate the software so everything xiaomi I buy runs new software i.e. zigbee2mqtt, cyanogenmod, custom camera firmware, ble to NRF52 etc.

yeelight hardware is brilliant

rare condor

True

limber sable

However, it’s worth noting that this blacklist is different from the US Entity List. So unlike Huawei or even DJI, Xiaomi still can import US technology without a license, at least for now.

yeelight software is a sad joke

afraid to update and have stuff break. might just stay with vulnerable software until i know i'm affected. ;/

Update, if it breaks you can fix or rollback and then fix 😉
