tidal bronze
#

It's pretty common

chilly nymph
#

And the other drop, right next to it, has a clean signal to a specific jack

spark orchid
#

When I tone, I get a SOLID tone, at 300M, for the wires I want, and can get faint tones on nearby wires

tidal bronze
#

Wait, so you have a cable tester built-in to that did you do a cable test ?

chilly nymph
#

What's weird is I can't even trace the drop inside the wall RIGHT where the drop is

#

I unfortunately did not have an ethernet cable with me at the time, aside from what was in the wall

#

But I'm bringing that box next run down

tidal bronze
#

So they are already terminated with keystone?

forest edge
#

telling ya.. a a box of matches is pretty cheap

night zodiac
#

to get a cat out you have to send another cat in

chilly nymph
#

The verizon guy was nice enough to terminate the drop for me.

#

I didn't have the crimper at the time

night zodiac
tidal bronze
#

@chilly nymph start with pictures, let's see where we can take this.

spark orchid
#

I'd use the cable tester. If you can see the ID node from every jack, they are daisychained, if not, they are not

chilly nymph
#

Ok. It'll probably be friday night (EST)

#

If not Saturday

spark orchid
#

Although... If every room has a drop, and you cannot find a central location they were run to...

chilly nymph
#

I can copy/paste the electrician's email response. It's not helpful though ๐Ÿ˜›

tidal bronze
#

BTW did you check the attic?

night zodiac
#

did verizon guy crimp rj45 onto phone lines for you? ๐Ÿ˜›

chilly nymph
#

"I just ask Electriction about coax and cat6 they said all connections from third floor to second floor and down to basement, all connect the lead to basement."

#

electrician will not talk to me directly because I told him it's wired for phone and he said it is not.

#

@night zodiac That's my thought, TBH

#

@tidal bronze I tried. But attic is finished. Only area that is not "finished" is effectively an HVAC room and full of spray foam and ducting.

#

Because to me, the attic would have made a ton of sense as a central location.

#

OR the closet they put a sub-panel on the second floor

night zodiac
#

basements are usually where I expect to find 'em for me out where I live

#

if there is a basement, that is.

tidal bronze
#

I am starting to believe the cut out for all the drops were drywalled in.

night zodiac
#

our basements are often unfinished so it's easy to slip a line up/down the wall

tidal bronze
#

Do you have any pull strings along with the cat5 at any of the plates?

chilly nymph
#

AND on the second floor, below the sub-panel, there is a junction box that is cut through. But I can only see a brown wire (thermostat) through there

#

no

tidal bronze
#

Naked drop to wall plate or flex conduit from header down to the plate?

chilly nymph
#

So I don't know what a naked drop is, but there is a single cat 6 or cat 5e cable (randomly) conecting to each jack. I did not see any conduit.

tidal bronze
#

You will not see the flex if they used it (they should) usually it's 2 or 3" away from the plate opening.

chilly nymph
#

ok

#

Outside the single gang box then?

tidal bronze
#

No inside the wall

chilly nymph
#

BTW, this is the same electrician that clipped the c wire off of my thermostat wires.

tidal bronze
#

lol

chilly nymph
#

Fortunately, there was enough slack that I was able to just pull more out

night zodiac
#

you know what electricians are for, right

tidal bronze
night zodiac
#

and what HVAC people are for

chilly nymph
#

@night zodiac Electrician said he ran and connected the thermostat cables.

night zodiac
#

๐Ÿ˜›

tidal bronze
#

@chilly nymph what state is this?

chilly nymph
#

MA

night zodiac
#

it isn't hard at all really ๐Ÿ˜›

chilly nymph
#

Also, I know what conduit looks like ๐Ÿ˜›

#

@night zodiac I know it's not hard to install a thermostat. I connected two new ones this weekend and have done a couple others in the past as well ๐Ÿ˜›

night zodiac
#

no, I was just saying I don't blame him for running it is all

#

nothing wild

chilly nymph
#

ah

night zodiac
#

my whole family does HVAC yet I still do it myself

#

they all just live a bit aways

#

I just take lots of pics

chilly nymph
#

I like how invested you guys are in my plight lol

#

I actually just thought I was coming on to complain. Didn't expect anyone to try to help. But I am not turning it down and do genuinely appreciate it.

night zodiac
#

well when 50% of the chat in this channel is forwarding people to the support section, anything stimulating gets us going

chilly nymph
#

lol

#

I'm usually guilty of posting in the wrong room

tidal bronze
#

BTW even if you can't find the ends/splices running CAT5 is pretty simple.

night zodiac
#

most of us have PTSD from freenode

chilly nymph
#

My concern is cutting holes in the ceilings

tidal bronze
#

Hmm textured or custom paint?

chilly nymph
#

"textured"

#

I don't even know how to describe the texture

#

Only photo I can find that has any sort of shadowing on the ceiling

#

a clip of the photo, anyway

#

I know it's not very detailed, sorry. But it'd be hard for me to patch.

tidal bronze
#

Still not a problem or nothing to fear about cutting and patching. Spray on texture is readily available. ๐Ÿ˜‰

#

As long as you have paint codes.

chilly nymph
#

It's like the swished plaster stuff

#

I know I'm using the wrong terminology

#

The walls, I can patch easily

tidal bronze
#

Are you talking about orange peel?

chilly nymph
#

I'll google it

#

no

#

It's almost like concentric circles

#

or semi-circles anyway

tidal bronze
#

On the ceiling?

chilly nymph
#

Yes. ๐Ÿ˜

tidal bronze
#

Oh wow.

#

Fan comb ?

chilly nymph
#

My wife's description: "It's almost like he tried to make it look nice but didn't know what he was doing. I mean he did fine, but it's far from perfect"

#

Yes, looks like fan comb.

tidal bronze
#

That's a little bit of work.

#

๐Ÿ™‚

chilly nymph
#

That's why I don't want to cut a hole in the ceiling

night zodiac
#

Scrape it or cover it, lol

#

All

chilly nymph
#

Yeah, I am tempted to flatten the ceilings in the whole house. But don't have the time to do it or the money to hire someone to do it.

night zodiac
#

I'm not saying to do that. It's just the only way to make it look nice if you did

tidal bronze
#

So walls and headers with bore bits, no need to cut ceilings

chilly nymph
#

BUT, all the non-bedroom rooms have led cans in them, so there are plenty of holes in those rooms that I can access

#

bedrooms have a single fixture in each

tidal bronze
#

As long as you are running with the joists ๐Ÿ™‚

chilly nymph
#

yeah...

tidal bronze
#

That's a great way to cross ceiling space.

chilly nymph
#

Is there a better tool I can use to trace the line from outside the wall?

#

I can't find the line even right where the drop in the basement goes, once it passes the drywall

tidal bronze
#

Got insulation in wall ?

chilly nymph
#

On that wall and 2/4 walls that the jacks are on, yes

#

But the other two, no

#

At least, I assume no. As they are not exterior walls

tidal bronze
#

Run a inspection camera. I think phone ones are cheap. I'd say start with pictures before you go all out.

#

Might be something simple you missed ๐Ÿ™‚

chilly nymph
#

I do have one of those somewhere, need to find it and an OTG adapter. It's in a box somewhere.

tidal bronze
#

Yep those work fine if not packed with insulation.

chilly nymph
#

would need to drill a hole in the box, but that's not a big deal

forest edge
#

still talking about this? he's not even on site lol

tidal bronze
#

lol.

chilly nymph
#

lol. Would it not be good for me to show up to the site with the right tools?

tidal bronze
#

If everything fails we will take your match stick route @forest edge uno momento por favor

forest edge
#

your gonna show up and open a cabinet door and find all the leads winthin 2 mins of arriving

chilly nymph
#

What cabinet

forest edge
#

just saying

chilly nymph
#

The drops are coming out of a hole cut in the baseboard

forest edge
#

your trying to a beat a horse you cannot even find atm because you are not on site

chilly nymph
#

But I've spent hours looking at this. With the exception of what I can't see behind the wall, I have it burned into my brain

#

The exception to that statement is what's on the exterior

forest edge
#

lots of people spend hours stumped on something that later was a derp moment

tidal bronze
#

He is not used to walls. So you gotta excuse him lol Barn life!

forest edge

I have been telling my girl how badly I want to travel. I want vaccine so badly, she gets hers next week.

chilly nymph

And I thought our new view was good

night zodiac

I asked if I could get hired for a week and then fix their IT

forest edge
#

enjoy the view while it lasts.. sure it won't be long before all you see is smoke again lol

night zodiac

chilly nymph
#

This is our new view

forest edge
#

you want to be the first to contract the new strain the vaccine dosen't work on?

night zodiac
#

yes

chilly nymph
#

Not even close to comparing to your view

tidal bronze
#

@chilly nymph must be beautiful spring/summer

forest edge
#

looks like @dull chasm but less swampy

night zodiac
#

oh, fuck. I didn't mean to bring that up, lol. my brain wandered

chilly nymph
#

That's the hope. Haven't seen it in the spring/summer yet though

tidal bronze
#

Deck looks fantastic

night zodiac
#

I took a picture of MO as a joke to show y'all how shitty the views are, last week

chilly nymph
#

The deck is nice

night zodiac
#

when I was there, I'm in Illinois. pretty close

#

that deck fucks

forest edge
#

MO isn't about the views. it's about the actually good ediable food and smoke free air

chilly nymph

He spent money on the deck, kitchen, and bathrooms. Cut corners absolutely everywhere else

I took this out of a passenger window going 80 mph

that is what I do

chilly nymph

Wait, seriously?

what is your exposure time lol

chilly nymph

.000001 seconds?

night zodiac
#

it was pretty high with HDR enabled, pretty sure

#

maybe this was HDR and other wasn't ๐Ÿ˜›

#

I think both were

tidal bronze

HDR for sure.

the thing is, I have no idea what I am looking at but I might just get this small bundle on amazon

tidal bronze

Been a fan of Sony A7 series but now collecting dust. Phone cameras are pretty good and 2021 will be even better.

I like to buy budget phones that I can break without really worrying so I think I might get a nice camera.

Anything similar price you'd suggest?

lavish gate
#

Maybe the T7 is different but the T5 LCD looks like ๐Ÿคฎ compared to my T2i

night zodiac
#

the reviews on this look great so I think I might try it

#

comes with a decent kit I think

lavish gate
#

Kit lens + random garbage

night zodiac
#

2 x SanDisk 32GB SDHC Memory Cards + Deluxe Padded Camera Case + Flash Light + 3pc Filter Kit + Extra Battery Pack + AC/DC Car & Home Charger + High Speed USB Card Reader + 50" Camera Tripod

#

all that shit that I'd rather just have in a kit if you see one

#

I am not super into this so it's just a toy

lavish gate
#

In that case it'll be more fun than not

night zodiac
#

after a quick reddit, maybe I will look for the T7i

lavish gate
#

I assume the filters are AliExpress quality and the tripod is a typical cheap tripod

night zodiac
#

I didn't even really know filters were a thing so I am not big into those, lol. I just don't like shopping for a bunch of small things

lavish gate
#

Yeah in that case just get the kit, it's probably more fun than not having one and you can swap out the parts that aren't serving your use case well

night zodiac
#

I see a bag, card, card reader, flash, battery, charger

#

for sure, thanks for input though

lavish gate
#

I prefer getting just the body locally and picking up lenses and other components

night zodiac
#

it already made me look into t7i so that is a plus

lavish gate
#

I'm not sure if my experience with the T5 translates to the T7 but the T5 had a really strange LCD pixel arrangement. Like alternating rows of even/odd pixel counts. Low density compared to a camera much older.

night zodiac
#

I don't see the body by itself on their site but I see most other things

#

oh, here it is

#

wait, nvm

#

these are lenses

#

nvm, it is body + lense

#

wait, i lost it?

lavish gate
#

If you don't care about a few MP and other random features, you can be the proud owner of a T2i body and close to $600 worth of lenses and other fun accessories for that same budget

night zodiac
#

found it

#

Idk any of the words you ar eusing, lol

#

I just want to take sweet dick pics

lavish gate
#

(insert 100mm macro lens joke)

night zodiac
#

is the lense in the amazon listing the same as the canon listing?

#

I think so. the kit is cheaper than the stuff without the kit

lavish gate
#

One is straight from Canon with the Canon warranty (1 year?). The other one is probably an international edition that has no warranty.

night zodiac
#

ahh, got it

lavish gate
#

I've personally never sent my camera junk off to be repaired while its under warranty so it's probably not worth much if your camera survives for a few months

night zodiac
#

yeah, that was my thought as well

lavish gate
#

And you don't buy any very expensive lenses

night zodiac
#

amazon treats me well with returns based off of my history so I might just gamble

#

I will honestly probably just take pictures of birds in my yard so regular lens might do

#

"regular"

#

the one on the listing

#

bird feeder is 4 feet from my window

lavish gate
#

18-55mm is neither fast nor does it have a particularly decent "zoom" but it'll work

night zodiac
#

fast?

#

I thought that bitch was the speed of light

lavish gate
#

Big hole lets in more light

#

Small hole lets in little light but is sharper

night zodiac
#

oh, exposure is less?

#

like, not duration

lavish gate
#

That's a different variable

night zodiac
#

but intensity

#

uhhhhh, figured

#

so they call it speed?

#

"speed"

last dirge
#

welcome to the confusing world of photography ๐Ÿ™‚

#

that one's F4-5.6

#

aperture closes more as you zoom in

lavish gate
#

I believe the kit lens is f/3.5 at 18mm and f/5.something at 55mm with image stabilization, but you can get "faster" lenses that let in a lot more light without image stabilization

last dirge
#

hushed basalt
#

The focal length for a lens is the same no matter what camera it's on, it's just the sensor dictates the crop factor

#

Imagine if you had a projector shooting an image on the wall,

#

You could think of the focal length of the lens being the distance from the projector to the wall

#

And the sensor size is the size of the projector screen you decide to put up

#

The width/height of the projection on the wall is a characteristic of the projector but is not strictly bound by distance to the wall,

#

So a lens that's strictly made for smaller sensors can't be used on larger sensors, because the projection isn't big enough to cover it

#

But you can use a smaller sensor on a larger projection

#

But the actual "look" of the photons leaving the lens will be the same, just cropped in

#

Depth of field gets even trickier,

#

There's only a single absolute distance that things are truly in focus, but the points before and after that will be practically in focus depending on aperture, focal length and circle of confusion

I think last I counted I have... 3 bass, 7 electric, 5 acoustic, and a few odd ones like a slide, ballalaika and digital modeller guitar

I just purged a bunch of guitars. down to 2 bass (1 doesn't work though, active pickups crapped out), 3 acoustics and got rid of all electrics. also got rid of my drums which I'm regretting now

I just installed my Hue motion sensor outside. I'm glad I went with 'er, a few neat settings I can do remotely.

now I just need 4 more feet of ladder to replace the bulbs above it

#

So it seems the indoor sensors I have are able to be modded for faster timeouts. That is neat.

#

hopefully it sticks. I used this tape on brick. I mounted my cams with it and it has worked really well. Before though, I put a piece of tape on it and then ripped it off a bit later to remove the dirt and then put a fresh piece. I didn't do that this time but it is much lighter.

What I did was graph area sensors for sometime using grafana and checked the deviation from call to temp/temp. Then use area temp sensor to statistics sensor. Statistics sensors to min max. Min max as the generic thermostat sensor. Max age of stat sensor varies on vent size and time to reach call temp. As I said takes a few weeks of collecting data and dialing it in. Even without any fine tuning far better than next or ecobee.

night zodiac

hard to tell but a 10 degree difference between rooms (that have vents) is a sign something is wrong

it would be normal if say the thermostat is on the third floor and the first floor was 10 degrees colder etc

shy comet
#

i think it also depends on placement of sensors and the position of the sun

night zodiac
#

yeah, I need to maybbe look into placements of them

shy comet
#

like if your sensor is on a window sill that gets the sun for 7 hours a day it can def go much higher than the others

night zodiac

shy comet

or even if the wall gets warmer/colder

that too but i normally find placement to be an issue

many thermostats allow for extra sensors to balance things out as well

like my main therstat is on the 2nd floor (where bedrooms are) and i have a sensor two split floors down

and it averages the temps

well if ur trying to hit a particular room they have those vents you can open and close

What stuff do I do with ur home assistant?

night zodiac

do you have the blueprint for that?

clear ferry
#

Ngl blueprints sound handy, but I don't use them

night zodiac
#

I looked through a bunch of them and none of them looked useful to me yet. Most things are too particular to the user.

#

Eventually, there will be one everyone uses ๐Ÿ˜›

clear ferry
deft pewter

As soon as someone makes the master blueprint that can do everything, all we'll have to do is customise every detail to suit us.

#

And... we'll be back at square one ๐Ÿ˜„

#

I can see the benefit of blueprints as a teaching tool. Or blueprints to quickly knock out duplicates for yourself.

#

For the latter, it feels like a copy/paste is just as good.

night zodiac
#

lol. I think maybe something that is just particular to a usecase rather than doing the entire place in one

Long live yaml

night zodiac

I like yaml. It is wild though.

I know like 7% of it

I briefly looked into porting a parser for it into Lua at one time before realizing I am too tiny brained. At that time, I did not realize how fancy yaml was and though it was much more boring.

@clever mortar Hey man... since you blocked me its the only way for me to say I am sorry. I didnt mean to bother you and will not ever again. Thank you again for all the help. Again.... it was not ment as "I DEMAND HELP"... I am sorry. All the best.

I botherd him a few hours back. I just wanted to say I am sorry. I think he got me wrong and I didnt want to offend him. I get why he is angry at me and I just wanted to appologize. Please let it be at that
