If you squint a little, that looks tidy.
Yeah, as a thumbnail
Zoom
If you make it full screen you would have to be blind to think it looks tidy
Oh the classic fat small girl rack angle shot
๐
Love the cough syrup
Good thing it wasn't a laxative or lube or something
Would have been awkward
But yeah, all that is being moved to a rack :)
Here we go with the 2021 worldview ๐คฃ
I was thinking other things, but yes Atx :)
Thanks for reminding me that I was going to spend part of my 2 weeks off work velcroing the mess under my desk.
I go back on Monday and I haven't even started tidying ๐
@deft pewter I have bought two new monitors and two new drawer sections for my desk this Christmas
I'm ready
Already have an electric adjustable desk and a backapp chair
@clear ferry are u sure your norwat you know too much stuff

@last cedar if you haven't downloaded bought this on BD yet, it is great https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_Castle_Live_and_Other_Tales
Electric Castle Live and Other Tales is a live album and DVD/Blu-ray by Arjen Anthony Lucassen's progressive rock/metal rock opera project Ayreon, that was released on March 27, 2020. It is a live version of the 1998 studio album Into the Electric Castle, performed as an actual rock opera, complete with mise-en-scรจne; it is a recording of one of...
I started to use Twitter to follow accounts I was interested in. Mostly as a way of having a customised news feed for tech/programming stuff.
But like every social network, it always devolves into fucking memes and pictures of food.
I get most if not all of my news consumption from Twitter, when an account starts posting things i don't care for I just stop following that account
So, you don't follow anything any more ๐ค
Some, not that much
Not following an account doesn't stop you seeing crap in your feed though. You're forced to scroll through content that your followees interact with, which is often still memes and food photos.
I've started blocking accounts that post stuff I don't want to see... but that's probably futile, since there are way too many accounts ๐
That will not fly in my feed, those get booted
The only time I am on twitter is to see if a service is down for other people as well.
Algorithms can be so useful... until businesses use them to target you.
I friggin hate algorithms now.
I would probably say.... The only ones who use Twitter here are millennials, and most of them to selfwank celebrities
You are gonna have a blasting career as a stock photographer
@last dirge nicely done
@clear ferry ty for the tip!!!!
So... how do you nerds keep your LEGO organised?
I'm not talking sets, just the loose stuff.
Just glue them together
That'll work great. Until I want to build something different.
Think I'll just buy a bunch of these: https://www.plasticboxshop.co.uk/craft-storage-boxes-c4/compartment-boxes-c37/38cm-5-05-organiser-box-with-20-divisions-p3546
Boxes, many many many many many boxes
Lego you say....
Nothing half as organised as that though, they're basically large plastic crates
I see some people do indeed have many boxes: https://www.flickr.com/photos/engineeringwithabs/30898313711/in/pool-1043272@N22/
Oh. I remember my parents used to throw all my childhood LEGO into giant crates. I hated it. Can never find anything.
I want to be half-organised this time.
These are way too neat, wtf
A dedicated LEGO cupboard, Michelle? I love it.
Doesn't look like your house though.
Not messy enough to be our house?
I've got probably 5 or 6 crates about 40l in size each with assorted lego in each, plus a few other boxes of "bits"
I feel like this would be a decent solution but I have nowhere to put them: https://www.flickr.com/photos/nuno_santos/43673181320/in/pool-1043272@N22/
That's a lot of LEGO ๐ฎ
Is your partner tiny?
And a baby raccoon?
That is more like it

And, confession time
My missus has the mini version of that. Nanoblocks are fun.
Are you sure you are in Sweden?
I have a problem
And not Denmark?
๐
She's got a direct supply from the factory.
I am only said I didn't get the Wall E lego
I thought the confession was going to be that she was the child.
๐ ๐ ๐ ๐
If you want the job of posting it, I will gladly pay whatever it costs to print and post :D
Looks awesome
And they put the TP the right way โค๏ธ
Bring back the death sentence for anyone putting TP down the back.
@deft pewter we are all lego nerds in the family. She has all elves and is working on all the friends sets.
I used to collect technic sets. Got this hanging from ceiling atm
All our toilet roll holders are vertical, so there's a whole new world of which way is right ๐คฃ
If they're upright, that's just storage. Gotta be horizontal to count as a dispenser.
I can print anything anyone wants if they pay me for it
๐
Except@clever mortar
He gets it for free
I'd love to start collecting Technic again but it's so damned expensive.
๐งโโ๏ธ
I never appreciated the cost of LEGO when my family bought it for me as a kid.
Can you work out what it would cost for one? Absolutely no rush
It didn't used to be "that exoensive"
Remind me on Monday
Meccano is what I moved to "after" Lego, while still keeping the Lego ๐
That space shuttle was 80 quid back when I was a kid
Now the big technic sets are like 400
But ยฃ80 was a lot back in the 50's.
OOF
I am not as old as Atx, jeez!
Yeah, no ask I typed that, I realised that 20 to 25 years ago, 80 quid was actually a lot
Silent mary was 1800 sek iirc
On black friday :/
Yeah. It's funny thinking that ยฃ80 is cheap, then remembering decades of inflation ๐คฃ
LEGO's never really been cheap though.
No, it hasn't. But always good quality. Spent hours building stuff :D
Wtf, are you guys old shaming me again
Sorry :)
Y'all gonna laugh when you figure out I'm 22
๐บ
you're just a really old-looking 36.
22, damn!
How old are you though, atx?
Yeah. I'm sure you'd said before.
So you are not that old at all
He just acts it ๐
๐งโโ๏ธ
When I say you are old, I am 33, so technically you are. But I am too haha
I started working at age 9 and dismantling computers at age 6
I've been in the game for a while
Defo. I didn't build my own till I was 13
Good old days of socket A
Couldn't get it stable
200Mhz RAM with 333Mhz FSB cpu
You can guess where this is going
They had to be in sync :/
Haha
I just realized the Hue switch I never use is supported by zigbee2mqtt. Yay, buttons.
Buttons are great, especially ones you can make do anything :D
I want one of those emergency stop buttons
Somewhere in my house
Like in a bathroom that does something really useless
Would be fun
People can't resist
sprays the bidet at them
lollll
I have done that in the past
working on that now
This button will actually work well with the Movie and Music switches I have been adding
I am gonna need an emergency stop for UPS though, in the event of a fire though. Bang it into the EPO port
TTS message of Stop pushing the button
But that won't have anything to do with HA
๐
That is smart actually
Or maybe the quotes from portal
In Glados voice
I could almost do a portal themed house tbh
I need a dedicated TTS google device for the kitchen. The kitchen display gets taken over too much.
Reminds me, my wife wants me to build her a useless robot
I can just scream it from another room, I guess
atx, I thought that was you
jk
โค๏ธ
Useless robot? I really want to say she already has one, but
A useless machine, sometimes known as a "useless box", is a device which has a function but no direct purpose. It may be intended to make a philosophical point, as an amusing engineering "hack", or as an intellectual joke. Devices which have no function or which malfunction are not considered to be "useless machines".
The most well-known "useles...
Lol, someone beat me to it
Does the new one get more settings?
Those boxes are really fun

My storage room is a disaster right now
Garage, prio 2
I need to get rid of an oven I bought a few months ago before I moved
It is taking up too much space. either that or I can start selling crack cocaine
Got some jobs I need to do on the car that I can't do outside, if I can't get it back together under a day
I mean, not having that at home is very useful Busheezy ๐
Our neighbours above sell marijuana, that is bad enough
I was going to bring it to my parents one day to store it but it didn't work out so now I have an extra oven in my storage room in my way
I think I am going to rip through the room later and try and tidy it up, after a few drinks
Place I was looking at is 100+42 as 1.5 floors. Plus a cellar. We have 94 plus maybe 25 now in the cellar
So would gain at least 60m2
Sounds like a plan with the tidying up!
It was perfect before the holidays
some idiot bought a huge christmas tree
and a telescope
and a soundbar
I have to go through some stuff in our cellar, got 5 workstations to test, and my router to install and tinker with
my soundbar came in a dick shaped box, pretty neat
Awkward if it is posted
And gift wrapped
"what does the box look like"
"the huge penis"
I actually kept trying to show my buddy the picture and auto correct made it from "sick" to "dick" multiple times and then i realized it is a dick shaped box
phone is smarter than me
๐
I have a friend who got a box like that delivered. It wasn't a sound bar
I had the bbiggest curiosity of how it would look too. Before it arrived, I was like, hrmm. That box is going to have a lot of wasted space.
I was not expecting dick bbox

my awake toggle works so nicely. wowwwwww. buttons.
These docs say there are like 20 different possible states but I have figured out the basic 4
this thing is lying
This button is actually voodoo. I think if I am reading this correctly, it uses the nearby Hue Bridge to convert it to zigbbee even though it is on a different network? super weird.
"This is a Zigbee Green Power device which allows it to be very energy efficient. Messages from Green Power devices cannot be โunderstoodโ by normal Zigbee devices, therefore they need to be โtranslatedโ first. Not all Zigbee devices can do this translation, currently the only devices known to do this are Philips Hue devices. This means that the Green Power device has to be in range of a Philips Hue device in order to use it."
I wonder if it works on the other side of my house
It did. yay
Now I need to make my video/music toggles automagically do a bunch of things and I'll put those on the buttons
developer tools doesn't have a refresh button hidden, right
Unsure. My version is so old. Looking forward to redoing my entire network :)
haha
Michelle, still running ha 0.56
I imagine they are a necessity once you start buying the right shininess combos
This release has not introduced new integrations. ...I see 2021 is off to a good start ... heh
Folks need break too ๐
I wonder how long it has been where a release didnt have a new integration
That is just a joke by the way. I didn't make that meme, lol
It also has a lot of truth to it. I wouldn't want to add features around this time.
https://share.busheezy.dev/aV9fzX.gif yay, things happening
now to add it to buttons
This makes me sad. I wrote a new integration in November that's in the backlog ๐
@night zodiac looks slick!
@last plaza temp and humidity card on HA when? (for the cabinet!)
Yeah... got that one too.
Maybe I should make the 4th button start spotify and music sync at the same time, lol
sexy time button. I need fog machine and strobe lights though
That show is hilarious, haha
Damnit Colin Robinson
yay, my automation to turn on tv, cast spotify, and enable light sync works
I think I need to refactor a bit of things. I should put a lot more stuff in sccripts and just call the script. it will be cleaner
meh, actually. fook it. it depends.
I need to figure out why my soundbar keeps going to the wrong sound input
Gremlins
What we do in shadows! Love the energy vampire concept!
either my tv or my google tv is switching inputs on the turn-on
and it is forwarding that trash to my soundbar
Huntsman?
I'd say so,
I've seen a bigger one on the outside of the car,
on the glass next to my wifes head,
She screamed so loud at the lights people probably thought I was a serial killer
@night zodiac check the HDMI-CEC settings one of them coudl be causing a conflict...only one is needed to to power on/off
I'd hate to see one of those in person, despite knowing they're not harmful.
let alone inside a moving car lol
Exactly. I hate our tiny little English spiders enough ๐คฃ
@shy comet I just did something scary. I hooked the TV update to the internet and I am doing an update.
they have it all bundled in one setting :/ Anynet+ or something. I really want the ARC.
throwing soundbar firmware on a jumpdrive too
throw everything at it lol
Welp, what a waste of time :/
other than learning a bunch of ways not to fix it
I want CEC stuff but only have the option to disable it entirely
I could use digital input but like the ARC stuff
I hate spiders
I can't do certain settings with the replacement remote I bought for my TV. I just tracked down the $50 OEM remote and will see if maybe there are a bit more settings in there but I don't think so, lol
there is a "device setup" that only works with a "smart remote"
so fook
cleaned my storage room while trying to find it
@night zodiac unless you are crazy about DD+, No difference between ARC and Optical. If your TV supports eARC then it's somewhat worthwhile to use HDMI.
the ARC stuff is super nice just because it shares the sound profiles and the volume controls but I think I will just do the optical
I only use the flat/standard sound mode anyways
I think I'll just do that so I don't hate life.
brb
Built in TV players do a subpar job at decoding/reencoding audio anyways, I wouldn't worry about it too much. ๐
Okay, so that works perfectly now. ๐ thanks for the motivation
simple solution. I am sure cancelling an order from samsungparts.com is more trouble than it is worth
oh well, I can name my devices now. dumb that I need a smart remote for that
I just left my Sync Box on all of the time now too. I think that will speed up the turning on process.
Luckily the Google TV remote lets you map the buttons differently. Power button does CEC on/off to tv, volume is IR to soundbar, and source button is IR to soundbar. Although, now that the soundbar is solved, I can use that source button for the Hue Sync Box.

Already got some nice mobile dashboards built. The slick trick is embedding your own Javascript that automatically redirects your large-format dashboards to the mobile dashboards when loaded on a mobile device
And/or embedding CSS that automatically alters the page for mobile on mobile devices.
Not that bad
YourCSS {Here}
}```
That is assuming you know how to build a css ๐
Anything nested under the media query will only show up on mobile (or if you REALLY shrink the window on a PC)
I only ever did a css back in like 2003 to set font and colours of a webpage
I found using javascript to query the useragent, and force a redirect to an entirely different mobile dashboard when loaded on a mobile browser, was a better option, honestly
But CSS can do some fun tricks
I will only eventually need a "tablet" dashboard and a phone dashboard, can sort that later
I have a clean but default ui atm
Redirect is the way! Media queries are cool and all, redirect is far easier when you 100% know the devices that you're handling.
You can still find it... why clean it?

@clear ferry wtf is an i dag

I will, thanks!
Last chance for hardware troublemaking before it's back to work.
It is just there because I was cleaning the desk
@tepid roost I considered a keyboard like that, but it is too much for me, if I can just get a proper natural keyboard like the elite pro I'll be bappy
What is that keyboard.
I guess I went the other direction - the hardware project is a further customised board ๐
Starting from "what the fuck am I doing" level
The board in the photo is a mangled ErgoDox EZ. I swapped the caps for those clear top ones and plucked the unused keys off the board - just putting some black cardboard in their place to prevent dust and such from collecting too much.
The hardware platform is an nRF52840 devkit.
As much as I follow mechanical keyboards... I already kinda hit my personal endgame with the CODE 104 with MX Clear switches
Some nicer (double-shot) keycaps are about the only upgrade I want
I kind of entered that stuff at an odd angle - I didn't really give two shits about mechanical boards. I just wanted to further optimise my ergonomics.
What is the point in such a custom keyboard lol.
The stock keycaps are clear, coated in black, then have the legends lasered into the black coating to reveal the clear plastic underneath, allowing for backlit keys
Looks great, super sharp legends, but the black coating eventually starts to wear off
The ergonomic point or the layout tweaking?
For me it would be ergonomic
The whole point around super custom keyboards
So both then I guess? 99% of the time I only use one keyboard, but I use it a crapton given my occupation. Why on earth would I use one with a layout designed as a bad compromise or one with bad ergonomic properties?
That's what prompted my initial decision to order an ErgoDox anyway. And once I started adapting it further for my actual use, I just kind of kept going.
I kind of have a preference of whole-assing things.
Similar with initially picking up an IKEA TRร DFRI set and ending up here.
Looked at the ergodox, but boiiii that is some over priced RGB shit
Definitely is if there are features on there you don't want/need.
Just like gamer PCs are completely pointless.
Modern RGB shit is mostly overpriced yes
No RGB on my rig ๐
The only RGB-controllable thing is my mouse... and it's just locked to blue to match the case / monitor power LEDs
Now I specifically wanted individually addressable RGB in order to do per-layout highlights, I wanted the board fully programmable and I wanted the physical ergonomic layout of the ergodox. For that list of needs, the ergodox ez is basically the only game in town and compared to the market for ergonomic boards in general it does not really fall out of bounds budget-wise.
If I didn't want/need some of those factors, getting the EZ would have been a ridiculous waste of money.
I also don't buy smart bulbs for non-smart light needs.
Can be nice in a dark room. My keyboard has white LEDs (can be disabled)
I haven't looked at my keyboard in over 20 years, not sure what lights would do for me
Albeit I lie a bit, I look when I use a native hpux keyboard
I can touchtype as well, but that doesn't mean I have muscle memory for the insert or F12 keys...
Really?
Some shit you still glance for
I'm awful with the numbers above the letters. Numpad I can do by touch, symbols I can do by touch.
I have muscle memory for both Scandinavian and English keyboards
Then buying a board with lights in it would be pretty stupid, no?
I just don't type enough numbers for the top row.
Oh yeah, number pad is an absolute must. I almost never touch the numbers above the letters...
I can bang out IPv4 addresses blindly on a number pad
Not really stupid if the keyboard fits your needs otherwise. You can just turn the LEDs off...
I do that with my g510
Sure, "paying extra for" would be better wording ๐
Also, if you have a lot of layers on your keyboard, some people set up the LEDs to indicate which keys are active on the currently selected layer
Which is exactly what I do
@tepid roost Not paying extra if there's no alternative that meets your needs
That's just "the price"
Definitely
Ref: My earlier outline, I could have gone for a non-RGB ergodox option to cut cost significantly.
atx doesn't see what RGB would do for their use case, so I pointed out that for them paying extra for RGB would be a waste.
I saw. Not much of a waste, LEDs are cheap as chips
Also, for some products... good luck buying a good one that doesn't just happen to include RGB as standard these days
Mouses are a good example
If you wanted to buy one that doesn't have RGB because it's "a waste"... you're in for a rough search if you want anything reasonably high-end
Definitely. That obviously doesn't necessarily translate to product pricing, but in the case of the EZ, the delta is $30. If LEDs were unnecessary for ones use case or directly offensive, that would be a silly $30 to pay.
That's a function of availability, is my point
If the only option was LED or nothing... you're getting the LED version and just turning them off
any user use hasp?
I don't think anyone disagrees with that point?
Tangentially related: Sucks that blue LEDs die so much faster than the other colors. My Razer mouse (which has had its scroll wheel LED locked to blue since it was bought in 2013) is getting rather dim
Change it to red or green, it's as bright as the sun...
Might have to pop it open and replace the LEDs at some point. Already did the left and right-click switches
Rocking Cherry microswitches in my mouse now ๐
I mean my work PC has a freggin mini display on its motherboard. You bet I laugh at that, but it didn't mean I decided against getting the board in the first place ๐
And obviously the drivers for that stuff are only available for Windows.
So I throw the cabinet under my desk and never give it a second thought.
Well, until today I guess.
Not a bad thing to have an integrated video out on your motherboard. Can come in handy (extra screen, fallback for a bad video card on RMA, or you can use it for power savings via Nvidia Optimus)
Or, heck, if you run virtual machines you can temporarily give a VM your real graphics card while the host uses the integrated GPU
It's a really small display: https://images.anandtech.com/doci/15435/ASUS ROG Zenith Extreme Alpha 2.jpg
Oh no its way more silly than that
My bad. lol
Yeah, that's about as stupid as ubiquiti putting OLED screens on their switches
It's the best TRX40 board out there, but asus clearly threw the kitchen sink at it to push the price as high as it could go.
Also +1 for running an HEDT system
Which apparently means on-board display
I'm still rocking X99 because the only real upgrade is either a Threadripper build, or another Intel HEDT built
I was just looking at the price and its like WHY so much $$
It's an excellent example of component price != unit price. They threw all their stuff at it - both enterprise and gamer stuff in order to justify a jacked up price, but it's only that - a justification. Not a 1:1 to component pricing.
@quartz ether TRX40 motherboards start at about $400 and go up from there... Partially due to the small batches produced, partially due to board complexity
Yea I have a Asus Prime X399
I'm guessing that in addition someone may buy it for a misunderstood gaming rig? And so they're covering bases by adding the rainbowbarf in stead of just addressing enterprise?
Doing a short run of a 8+ layer PCB can't be cheap. Some of these boards get up to 11 layers thanks to including premium audio (with the left and right analog audio paths being given their own PCB layers with plenty of isolation)
@tepid roost I mean, Threadripper wasn't a bad option for gaming before AMD ditched all the 8, 12, and 16 core options...
Now it starts at 24 cores and the price is just stupid
Threadripper for gaming is stupid lol
Why on earth would you want more than eight cores and a lower clock speed for gaming?
Why would it clock lower? Traditionally lower core counts clock higher
TR is lower clock than regular Ryzen is what I mean.
And I'd want it for the extra memory bandwidth and PCIe lanes
Ryzen 7/9 for high end gaming. Threadripper for cpu rendering
Every time I try to part-out an AM4 build, I run out of PCIe lanes, and my old-ass X99 system has more memory bandwidth to work with...
How is memory bandwidth and PCIe lanes going to give you a better gaming experience than a couple of hundred mhz on the CPU?
Bandwidth always wins.
The additional PCIe lanes let me use more NVMe drives, for starters... and a number of games I have get a rather large performance boost going from dual-channel mode to quad-channel mode on my existing system
No point having the best parts if they can't get the data around the system.
3/5900x is more than plenty for a gaming cpu
I don't think anyone is arguing against that?
Literally no other changes mode. Hop into the UEFI, force the board into dual-channel mode, watch me lose 20 FPS in some titles (even worse if you log the 1% lows)
1% lows are kinda the most important number to keep high if you want a smooth stutter-free gaming experience, and quad-channel RAM improves them pretty massively on my system
Seeing titles making use of the delta from dual to quad channel is quite surprising. What sort of games and configs are these?
Doubles the memory bandwidth without loosening the timings. That's a pretty big win.
@tepid roost Nothing particularly wild. The Witcher III, GTA V, Half Life: Alyx
Pi ๐ฏ
The drop in 1% lows from going to dual-channel mode is incredibly noticeable in VR, especially when you have the headset cranked to 144 Hz and you're trying to keep a consistent 144+ FPS at all times
Ok. Open worlds like those will definitely push things around, but dual to quad making a significant difference is still surprising.
Battlefield V, Assassin's Creed Odyssey 2x8GB vs. 4x4GB RAM performance comparison.

Someone has, helpfully, done a comparison that includes 1% lows along side average FPS ๐
as long as I have more FPS than I can visually observe, I'll frankly not care about the 20 extra
Er, accidentally linked it with a timestamp. Feel free to roll that back to the beginning
For sure. When available use it all the way - things just get a bit less straight forward when the proposition is a tradeoff vs CPU throughput.
VR makes a ton of sense. The open world non-VR games I could see push things, but are still surprising. Will definitely dig deeper there.
I mean, in theory, there's no reason you couldn't get that 24-core 3rd gen Threadripper, disable the weakest cores to clock it higher, and then have all the memory bandwidth and PCIe lanes you could ever want
Bit wasteful, though
Really wish AMD would just release some lower core count Threadrippers at reasonable prices for the gamers who want larger rigs
If I go AM4... One graphics card, two NVMe drives, and I'm out of PCIe lanes. Sucks... ๐
My immediate approach before diving more into this would still be to get either an R5 or 7, clock it silly, throw an AIO on it, spend the budget on GPU.
I mean, at this point, AMD's solution appears to be "DDR5"
Just go for a Superdome Flex, 896 cores \ 64TB RAM, 128 possible NVMe slots, 64 possible graphics cards and throw in a few 100Gbit cards and you'll be golden
They can literally throw RAM that's clocked twice as fast at the problem, rather than widening the memory bus to 256 bit
Could that run Crysis?
No
YES
๐
Actually I don't see why not, it is pure scalable x86
Kinda funny. Anyone who invested in X99 has been playing with DDR5-levels of memory bandwidth since 2016
DDR4 3400 in quad channel is going to provide roughly the same amount of bandwidth as DDR5 6800 in dual-channel, and that's not the fastest DDR4 you could attempt to run, either...
Granted, DDR5 has some nice latency improvements coming along for the ride
@scenic radish I see you typing
Anyway, last bit of holiday hardware hackery was fun. Perhaps I'll find some more time for it next weekend ๐
my m570 just stopped working, apparently a big bit of nasty was stuck inside the cavity of the sensor ๐คฃ
haven't removed the ball before now
I've had it for... little over 6 months now I think
Trackball? I thought only old men with arthritis had those?
I've been using them since about 25, to limit the damage from RSI
I am an old man
And I've never had RSI
but I do love my trackball
never had one until @clever mortar told me to buy one
๐คฃ
How am I going to win Fortnite with a trackball though?
I always found it easier and more accurate than a mouse when I was gaming
Fortnight you say, Ye old british paycheckeths
Having a button to flip between accuracy/slow speed and high speed movement is handy
OY, GIVE ME MY FORTNIGHT PAY YA WANKER
My meditation waterfountain is in place
Now to get my muji diffuser up and running and I am in zenmode for a fuckton of meetings
@subtle pasture a smaller threadripper would be magnificent!
And ECC support (asking too much)
@last plaza

I went to use my bedtime automation last night when everything died. I noticed one of my lights flickering nonstop and realized what I did. I put the light group inside of itself and it was in an infinite loop. lol
More loops!
how to enable haunted light mode ^^
looked spooky
This is like the first day that I have woke up tired in a long-ass time. I feel weird.
Nice new covid rules
No guests in homes
Max 5 people can meet up anywhere outside your home
No alcohol serving allowed throughout the country
That's new
But still only please don't travel

Norway's rules are still more relaxed than three quarters of England ๐คฃ
I can't even go to the shops now.
Haven't been allowed to dine out for months. Same with seeing family (except them allowing Christmas Day).
And they reckon it'll carry on like this (or stricter, god knows how) until April.
I've done my best to do the right thing for the last 9 months... but our government are so inept. This could've been over months ago and now it just feels like punishment.

We did the right thing for 9 months and ended up getting it whilst Getting last minute groceries for Xmas ๐ฆ been a fun week and a bit now :/

There is a possibility that covid may return in 2024 ๐
It'll never really be gone now. Just gotta hope vaccinations keep it under control.
He's being a cunt, lol
We'll find out once the older folk get theirs and stop dying.
The current vaccine will be effective starting Jan 20, hopefully it will cure the current strain. But experts believe that more deadly mutation is being developed and will be effective in 2024.
Shit every time, I do this every time ๐๐

2 months, I might be dead
I could get 2 months of use out of it via amazon. maybe the motion sensors save my life.
they won't

message was:
After trying my best with all sorts of open source automation software ~5 years ago I decided to try again moving in a new house.
Holy shit! installed HA and literally everything works instantly.
sorry, haha
Im blown away
the one time I say something for the long messages ๐
What did you use before? I hated life before when trying stuff bbefore HA
tried domiticz, and openhab
plus one I cant remember but it was basicly just strung together perl scripts
I used something called AutomationManager that I have never heard mentioned in here, lol
it was cool to hack together some stuff real quickly. but user friendlyness zero
cool to play with, but then it fails the girlfriend/wife test and untimatly dies a slow death ๐
ahh, yeah. same. shower_mode_jill.js
Did you get the full YAML baptism yet or are you saving yourself?
There is only YAML
I remember my first day with HA, I just did nothing but add all of the integrations possible I could find which left with me 1000 default badges
This is the way

Default config ๐คข
WELL, AS A START

meh i use it out of sheer laziness
i dont have to remember to add things to get new features
so far only UI, YAML is for next weekend ๐
i use the automation editor at my parents install but after clicking create automatoin i immediately go to YAML mode lol

this round of the install I am using nothing but the integrated VS Code editor and I like it a lot more than using the remote VS Code setup
does the integrated editor have linter highlighting? :p
It has everyfuckingthing
Integrated editor ๐คข
I like it more. It has been more stable for me.
It does, but it's also quite limited - and can lead you to write gibberish
That one... also has issues at times
I've seen folks saying it reports valid HA syntax as invalid
it's better then nothing, but yeah I run in to that frequently at work
I have only had invalid syntax bbeing reported with the stock shit but never the vs code addon since I started using it
the syntax highlighting is great for me now. my setup for remote before wasn't optimal as I was using sambda share with the remote connection and I think something was spamming updates making it slow
in its defence, theres some puppet gurus at my job that use all sorts of edgecases that are valid but... weird
so remote would beb great if you didn't do it like me ๐
meh i just use notepad
lol
๐คข
vs code made me VIM dumb
I could probably use the vim vs code extension though for all of the quickness
I force myself to use vi more and more
vi works when almost nothing else does
I use nano on servers now because I have lost the muscle memory
catch me out here holding down arrow
Im a windows sysadmin for a hosting company.
I spend plenty of time within Linux but VI scares the living shit out of me
That's ok, we know it's not your fault.... Windows that is

I spent 30 minutes trying to think of the word "active directory", 2 weeks ago
words
my father's work is failing in the IT side of things. they need an active directory setup and I couldn't think of the words.
He said he looked at a girl's laptop and it had half a screen of toolbars. No restrictions, lol
That is completely out of his area but he was venting, lol
Sounds familiar. Sorting companies like that is just the worst time. At least I never have to handle the onsite stuff :p

Oh no! Not 2024 ๐๐๐

Fuck, got work tomorrow. It would feel strange going to work after 25 days of vacation.
I am trying to mentally prepare for working tomorrow
I do too, which is why I have cleaned my office and installed my zen fountain and blood orange mister

I would all be pissed mostly - going through endless emails
Too bad my NAS doesnโt support Zfs.

NAS boot beep scared me
@sonic hamlet WD Red Pro in the synology are my go to after some issues with older seagate and wd shucked (some i still have) in RAID5 (i don't use RAID as backup method - thats the second NAS job)
i actually didnt lnow there even were mods in the lounge...
so long as we don' discuss HA support here i assume everything else is game?
resuming our conversation from #330944238910963714: I feel dirty backing up anything to a medium that's not backed by a fault-tolerant raid
ive noticed a SERIOUSLY slowdown on the NAS when any drive (or when the system approaches) gets full (or when it hits the size of a full drive.. in my case, 8TB)
that's why I'm currently backing up to the cloud
and i need to dump dummy data in it to kick it past about 10%
my nucs are so new, they literally only have HA running on them at the moment ๐
on my nextcloud, i just have it hooked up to a 2TB backup drive i had laying arounf....
i backup between the synology units for low key data, the small amount of high key data gets backuped to azure stroage
did you guys know that some people have installed HA on their Synology NAS???
actually my critical data is one-drive primary > RO sync to synology > backup to second synology > backup to azure warm
yeah i had it running on mine with zwave passed through via docker
but why...
thats where I evaluated HA
got it
I've had problems with the longevity of cheap seagate 2TB drives
one failed on me a few years ago (thankfully it only had time machine backups)
didn't know synology was so feature packed
Most Synology and qnap boxes are fine for playthings, but have no proper punch
don't drink the punch
indeed they have their place, for home networking it has been great - esp the ability to get support
not sure what i would choose if i was back in the buisness helping small businesses with IT
Eh, the biggest problem is their scalability, most of them can't be expanded beyond their original CPU and memory
Surely they're ok for backups and maybe Plex?
Sure
memory can be expanded on all of them
Mine works great for plex
this unit only came with 2gb and official only supported 6gb - it has 16gb in it
I'm actually researching NAS enclosures right now. This is good timing.
Definitely not true, unless that has changed the last two years
great for anything that doesn't hammer CPU
to be clear this is a five year old unit - anything 4 bays and over has always supported it in the DS+ ranges
some of the consumer ones were fixed
the CPU's used in most of the ones I've seen are limited to 8GB of memory. I see people doing guides for 16GB and being happy that they see it but the CPU specs says it can't use it.
My DS918+ came with 4gb and I put 8gb in it. woooooooo
most you you have seen is the operative bad assumption
wat
my DS918+ has 16gb in it ๐
Even worse, CPUs that can't address larger memory sizes will crash when passing their limit
Even if memory is visible
not sure where you are getting that info from
with apps like VMM and docker i can absolutely use all 16GB
VMM ๐คข
does your NAS not use the free ram for caching?
perhaps I read it incorrectly years ago. oh well
or is that simply not reflected when you're looking at memory
@sonic hamlet only proper filesystems do that ;-)
yeah i feel ya, its nasty
iirc, that's what Linux does. Not sure if you can see this cached memory in htop
@clear ferry but what about at the file level. i.e. many clients are requesting the same files
@sonic hamlet all modern operating systems do application and other cache though
Windows calls it smart cache I believe
Are TerraMaster any good? I'm trying to figure out why their 5 bay NAS is cheaper than a lot of 2/4 bay alternatives.
This looks a good price: https://www.amazon.co.uk/TerraMaster-F5-221-Storage-Network-Diskless/dp/B07JMWT9TQ
Never heard of
Same... but it's not a new business.
right, so in terms of upgrading a nas to 16GB of ram, is it safe to assume the NAS will use all available RAM for file caching, but free it when requested by other apps?
no, depends on NAS, OS and settings this is what mine does
@ancient wren I think the white lines in the mem bar reflect OS-level cache
i will defer to you, i don't use it very often
haven't heard of ZFS before. this looks interesting!
Never heard of?
ZFS is pretty cool
Blasphemy
"To make the most efficient use of real memory, Linux automatically uses all free RAM for buffer cache, but also automatically makes the cache smaller when programs need more memory."
I think that summarizes it pretty well
Buffer isn't necessarily what you think it is
ah true
yeah there is a lot of crap on the internet ๐ - who knew, lol
I just remember Synology for sure suggests only 8GB. I figured they had a reason.
i unlearn things i knew to be true on a weekly basis ๐
oh true and the reason is $$$$
they want you to buy more expensive units ๐
Does the UI still bug in the control panel when you use 16gbb?
there was something wonky with it
that's dangerous for people like me who would rather pay $1000-$2000 up front for a NAS that I will barely use vs paying for monthly cloud storage
and if you ring up support they may ask you to revert to lower mem for testing - i have never had that issue, i have had them insist i put back in official synology sticks of ram
A ton for something I don't use, that is
Long live truenas
yeah, I bought the official jazz for support stuff, I remembber that now that you mention
lol
I never imagine I will need it but I bought their brand
mumble, mumble, 3d printer, mumble, sat never unpacked and never used, mumble
i had the mem controller on a DS918+ fail - i could only prove it when their ram was in, because when it wasn't they accused my perfectly fine crucial ram of being funky
Scyto, I have a 3d printer I have literally never put together
bought it 6 months ago or so
Ender 5 pro or something
nice, i made the mistake of getting a A350 snapmaker 2
I lost the screws moving so now I need to track down a bunch of bullshit
i realized i will never time to do anything with it
well, the ender support is nonexistent so ๐
I would love a lot of enclosures for all of the 8266 things i make
Scyto, I think the resource monitor might have been the wonky thing with 16gb memory but it looks fine from your screenshot
ok, i have to go back to what i was supposed to be doing (spring cleaning) , this was fun, first time I have hung out here. Only in week 2 as a Homeassitant person. (been doing home automation for 7+ years)
yeah i am sure there have been issues wit certain OS version, certain units - i can;t talk to anything much before DSM6 - so maybe on DSM5 there was all sorts of crap?
Did I back the wrong horse with Zwave? Is zigbee more reliable?
no
Just cheaper ๐คฃ
reliability seems to be about the same between the two in my house. zigbee devices seem to have a few more quirks though and the nice cheap aqara sensors like to drop off the network a ton for me
I don't really have any issues with zigbee, no experience with zwave
I'm having a slight issue with z2m right now but I am pretty sure if nothing works soon I can just smash my face into the monitor and call it good
reading through 6 different repos that all touch my issue
What's the issue
I actually ended up looking over at my monitor and one of the PR's was authored bby someone chatting in zigbee. if you look in #zigbee-archived @hushed basalt
Nvm, reading back my convo isn't very linear. Something is telling z2m my device is allowed to OTA update but when it tries, the firmware is not listed in the repo they keep firmwares
so it tries to do something that never will work
so I have thousands and thousands of lines of errors ๐
walt is going to look into it more for me tomorrow and if not I'll have to make an issue on their git
i have run my z-wave since Nov 2013, never had any reliability issues (i chose zwave back then as IIRC there were no zigbee load dimmers or load switches), lol.
Does anybody know how to order the home assistant blue bundle in the Netherlands?
It only gives me options for Korea USA Sweden and Switzerland ๐คจ
Can you not order from the nearest one? ๐
When I looked the other day, it was out of stock :/
oh noo ๐
I think if I remember right, some time in Feb. I should have ordered one when I could ๐
wait, that is for the temporary solution. The actual blue says March/April
I think you just need an ODROID-N2+ and emmc storage and it's the same but I might be completely wrong
yeah true but i am running a gaming laptop with proxmox atm for home assistant troughout the whole house and i was hoping this could replace that
https://www.antratek.nl/odroid This looks like the distributor for Netherlands
Bestel uw Hardkernel ODROID computers producten bij Antratek Electronics. โ Zakelijk en privรฉ te bestellen โ 2 jaar garantie โ 20+ jaar ervaring -
but i was thinking about using LEDfx, ADGuard, MotionEye, Deconz, Emulated HUE, and stuff like that so idk if an odroid will be enough to handle everything
so im kinda stressy about ordering if it maybe wont hold my setup
I don't use a single thing you listed so I don't know, haha
haha all kinda cpu and ram intensive stuff i gues cause my rpi3 lagged
ssd?
then it never had a fair chance ๐
well I'd just get an odroid if it were me
emmc is reliable and isn't clunky like an external ssd
my pi's have ssds though
I wasn't really aware of odroid stuff until the blue came around
imma give the rpi3 with an ssd a second chance and if that doesnt work ill order an odroid
I am not booting from ssd, I just have data partition on it
kinda busy addon dashboard XD
yeah, I run a lot of stuff on my server, nas, and other pi
rather than my HA pi
hrmm, you would definitely want data to not be on sd card
I see now that pretty much everything there needs to be on same machine, lol
influx with sd card sounds interesting
i think as my HA for an all go to sollution, make one backup and have everything done. need to update something? sure go to HA, need to see the security cams? HA. the appliances throughout the home like the washer, dryer, roomba, etc, everything
oh, for sure. I have everything linked to HA that I need to some way or another
https://github.com/home-assistant/operating-system/blob/dev/Documentation/partition.md#using-datactl-to-move-the-data-partition bookmark this, by the way
https://share.busheezy.dev/u609Uq.png I am not running much at the moment
I have been looking at node-red but I am not really into clicking programs together and it looks like that. I don't really need it me thinks.
I was looking at mopidy but I think I'd rather just continue to stream my music through plex if needed and use spotify separate
I use Nest cams so don't need motioneye
i mainly use spotify for music and plex only for movies and series
I use spotify for most music but plex has a lot of things not on spotify
well, my plex
haha, yeah i am still searching for a way to stream my Spotify to my google home minis and echo devices throughout the house simultaneously and being able to control the volumes/inputs manually from home assistant
yeah ive been thinking about that
I only keep one of them so I can see amazon delivery alerts
but then i should buy 3 extra home minis
