Electric Castle Live and Other Tales is a live album and DVD/Blu-ray by Arjen Anthony Lucassen's progressive rock/metal rock opera project Ayreon, that was released on March 27, 2020. I started to use Twitter to follow accounts I was interested in. Mostly as a way of having a customised news feed for tech/programming stuff.

#

But like every social network, it always devolves into fucking memes and pictures of food.

I get most if not all of my news consumption from Twitter, when an account starts posting things i don't care for I just stop following that account

So, you don't follow anything any more ๐Ÿค”

Not following an account doesn't stop you seeing crap in your feed though. You're forced to scroll through content that your followees interact with, which is often still memes and food photos.

I've started blocking accounts that post stuff I don't want to see... but that's probably futile, since there are way too many accounts ๐Ÿ˜„

Messages from Green Power devices cannot be โ€œunderstoodโ€ by normal Zigbee devices, therefore they need to be โ€œtranslatedโ€ first. @tepid roost I considered a keyboard like that, but it is too much for me, if I can just get a proper natural keyboard like the elite pro I'll be bappy

quartz ether
#

What is that keyboard.

tepid roost
#

I guess I went the other direction - the hardware project is a further customised board ๐Ÿ˜›

#

Starting from "what the fuck am I doing" level

tepid roost
# quartz ether What is that keyboard.

The board in the photo is a mangled ErgoDox EZ. I swapped the caps for those clear top ones and plucked the unused keys off the board - just putting some black cardboard in their place to prevent dust and such from collecting too much.

#

The hardware platform is an nRF52840 devkit.

subtle pasture
#

As much as I follow mechanical keyboards... I already kinda hit my personal endgame with the CODE 104 with MX Clear switches

#

Some nicer (double-shot) keycaps are about the only upgrade I want

tepid roost
#

I kind of entered that stuff at an odd angle - I didn't really give two shits about mechanical boards. I just wanted to further optimise my ergonomics.

quartz ether
#

What is the point in such a custom keyboard lol.

subtle pasture
#

The stock keycaps are clear, coated in black, then have the legends lasered into the black coating to reveal the clear plastic underneath, allowing for backlit keys

#

Looks great, super sharp legends, but the black coating eventually starts to wear off

tepid roost
clear ferry
#

For me it would be ergonomic

quartz ether
#

The whole point around super custom keyboards

clear ferry
#

But sadly nothing can reach the comfort of this for me

tepid roost
#

So both then I guess? 99% of the time I only use one keyboard, but I use it a crapton given my occupation. Why on earth would I use one with a layout designed as a bad compromise or one with bad ergonomic properties?

#

That's what prompted my initial decision to order an ErgoDox anyway. And once I started adapting it further for my actual use, I just kind of kept going.

#

I kind of have a preference of whole-assing things.

#

Similar with initially picking up an IKEA TRร…DFRI set and ending up here.

clear ferry
#

Looked at the ergodox, but boiiii that is some over priced RGB shit

tepid roost
#

Definitely is if there are features on there you don't want/need.

#

Just like gamer PCs are completely pointless.

clear ferry
#

Modern RGB shit is mostly overpriced yes

subtle pasture
#

No RGB on my rig ๐Ÿ‘

#

The only RGB-controllable thing is my mouse... and it's just locked to blue to match the case / monitor power LEDs

tepid roost
#

Now I specifically wanted individually addressable RGB in order to do per-layout highlights, I wanted the board fully programmable and I wanted the physical ergonomic layout of the ergodox. For that list of needs, the ergodox ez is basically the only game in town and compared to the market for ergonomic boards in general it does not really fall out of bounds budget-wise.

#

If I didn't want/need some of those factors, getting the EZ would have been a ridiculous waste of money.

#

I also don't buy smart bulbs for non-smart light needs.

clear ferry
#

Lights in keyboards

#

๐Ÿคข

subtle pasture
#

Can be nice in a dark room. My keyboard has white LEDs (can be disabled)

clear ferry
#

I haven't looked at my keyboard in over 20 years, not sure what lights would do for me

#

Albeit I lie a bit, I look when I use a native hpux keyboard

subtle pasture
#

I can touchtype as well, but that doesn't mean I have muscle memory for the insert or F12 keys...

clear ferry
#

Really?

subtle pasture
#

Some shit you still glance for

deft pewter
#

I'm awful with the numbers above the letters. Numpad I can do by touch, symbols I can do by touch.

clear ferry
#

I have muscle memory for both Scandinavian and English keyboards

tepid roost
deft pewter
#

I just don't type enough numbers for the top row.

subtle pasture
#

Oh yeah, number pad is an absolute must. I almost never touch the numbers above the letters...

#

I can bang out IPv4 addresses blindly on a number pad

clear ferry
#

Only things that pisses me off a lot is the American tiny enter key

#

Throws me off

subtle pasture
clear ferry
#

I do that with my g510

tepid roost
subtle pasture
#

Also, if you have a lot of layers on your keyboard, some people set up the LEDs to indicate which keys are active on the currently selected layer

tepid roost
#

Which is exactly what I do

subtle pasture
#

@tepid roost Not paying extra if there's no alternative that meets your needs

#

That's just "the price"

tepid roost
#

Definitely

#

Ref: My earlier outline, I could have gone for a non-RGB ergodox option to cut cost significantly.

#

atx doesn't see what RGB would do for their use case, so I pointed out that for them paying extra for RGB would be a waste.

subtle pasture
#

I saw. Not much of a waste, LEDs are cheap as chips

midnight adder
#

hello

#

german user here

subtle pasture
#

Also, for some products... good luck buying a good one that doesn't just happen to include RGB as standard these days

#

Mouses are a good example

#

If you wanted to buy one that doesn't have RGB because it's "a waste"... you're in for a rough search if you want anything reasonably high-end

tepid roost
#

Definitely. That obviously doesn't necessarily translate to product pricing, but in the case of the EZ, the delta is $30. If LEDs were unnecessary for ones use case or directly offensive, that would be a silly $30 to pay.

subtle pasture
#

That's a function of availability, is my point

#

If the only option was LED or nothing... you're getting the LED version and just turning them off

midnight adder
#

any user use hasp?

tepid roost
subtle pasture
#

Tangentially related: Sucks that blue LEDs die so much faster than the other colors. My Razer mouse (which has had its scroll wheel LED locked to blue since it was bought in 2013) is getting rather dim

#

Change it to red or green, it's as bright as the sun...

#

Might have to pop it open and replace the LEDs at some point. Already did the left and right-click switches

#

Rocking Cherry microswitches in my mouse now ๐Ÿ˜„

tepid roost
#

I mean my work PC has a freggin mini display on its motherboard. You bet I laugh at that, but it didn't mean I decided against getting the board in the first place ๐Ÿ˜›

#

And obviously the drivers for that stuff are only available for Windows.

#

So I throw the cabinet under my desk and never give it a second thought.

#

Well, until today I guess.

subtle pasture
#

Not a bad thing to have an integrated video out on your motherboard. Can come in handy (extra screen, fallback for a bad video card on RMA, or you can use it for power savings via Nvidia Optimus)

#

Or, heck, if you run virtual machines you can temporarily give a VM your real graphics card while the host uses the integrated GPU

tepid roost
subtle pasture
#

Oh, I thought you meant it had a mini displayPORT

#

For the integrated GPU

tepid roost
#

Oh no its way more silly than that

subtle pasture
#

My bad. lol

#

Yeah, that's about as stupid as ubiquiti putting OLED screens on their switches

tepid roost
#

It's the best TRX40 board out there, but asus clearly threw the kitchen sink at it to push the price as high as it could go.

subtle pasture
#

Also +1 for running an HEDT system

tepid roost
#

Which apparently means on-board display

subtle pasture
#

I'm still rocking X99 because the only real upgrade is either a Threadripper build, or another Intel HEDT built

quartz ether
#

I was just looking at the price and its like WHY so much $$

tepid roost
#

It's an excellent example of component price != unit price. They threw all their stuff at it - both enterprise and gamer stuff in order to justify a jacked up price, but it's only that - a justification. Not a 1:1 to component pricing.

subtle pasture
#

@quartz ether TRX40 motherboards start at about $400 and go up from there... Partially due to the small batches produced, partially due to board complexity

quartz ether
#

Yea I have a Asus Prime X399

tepid roost
#

I'm guessing that in addition someone may buy it for a misunderstood gaming rig? And so they're covering bases by adding the rainbowbarf in stead of just addressing enterprise?

subtle pasture
#

Doing a short run of a 8+ layer PCB can't be cheap. Some of these boards get up to 11 layers thanks to including premium audio (with the left and right analog audio paths being given their own PCB layers with plenty of isolation)

#

@tepid roost I mean, Threadripper wasn't a bad option for gaming before AMD ditched all the 8, 12, and 16 core options...

#

Now it starts at 24 cores and the price is just stupid

quartz ether
#

Threadripper for gaming is stupid lol

tepid roost
#

Why on earth would you want more than eight cores and a lower clock speed for gaming?

subtle pasture
#

Why would it clock lower? Traditionally lower core counts clock higher

tepid roost
#

TR is lower clock than regular Ryzen is what I mean.

subtle pasture
#

And I'd want it for the extra memory bandwidth and PCIe lanes

quartz ether
#

Ryzen 7/9 for high end gaming. Threadripper for cpu rendering

subtle pasture
#

Every time I try to part-out an AM4 build, I run out of PCIe lanes, and my old-ass X99 system has more memory bandwidth to work with...

tepid roost
#

How is memory bandwidth and PCIe lanes going to give you a better gaming experience than a couple of hundred mhz on the CPU?

deft pewter
#

Bandwidth always wins.

subtle pasture
#

The additional PCIe lanes let me use more NVMe drives, for starters... and a number of games I have get a rather large performance boost going from dual-channel mode to quad-channel mode on my existing system

deft pewter
#

No point having the best parts if they can't get the data around the system.

quartz ether
#

3/5900x is more than plenty for a gaming cpu

tepid roost
subtle pasture
#

Literally no other changes mode. Hop into the UEFI, force the board into dual-channel mode, watch me lose 20 FPS in some titles (even worse if you log the 1% lows)

#

1% lows are kinda the most important number to keep high if you want a smooth stutter-free gaming experience, and quad-channel RAM improves them pretty massively on my system

tepid roost
#

Seeing titles making use of the delta from dual to quad channel is quite surprising. What sort of games and configs are these?

subtle pasture
#

Doubles the memory bandwidth without loosening the timings. That's a pretty big win.

clear ferry
#

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz AMD

subtle pasture
#

@tepid roost Nothing particularly wild. The Witcher III, GTA V, Half Life: Alyx

deft pewter
clear ferry
subtle pasture
#

The drop in 1% lows from going to dual-channel mode is incredibly noticeable in VR, especially when you have the headset cranked to 144 Hz and you're trying to keep a consistent 144+ FPS at all times

tepid roost
#

Ok. Open worlds like those will definitely push things around, but dual to quad making a significant difference is still surprising.

VR makes sense for sure

subtle pasture
#

Someone has, helpfully, done a comparison that includes 1% lows along side average FPS ๐Ÿ˜„

clear ferry
#

as long as I have more FPS than I can visually observe, I'll frankly not care about the 20 extra

subtle pasture
#

Er, accidentally linked it with a timestamp. Feel free to roll that back to the beginning

tepid roost
#

For sure. When available use it all the way - things just get a bit less straight forward when the proposition is a tradeoff vs CPU throughput.

#

VR makes a ton of sense. The open world non-VR games I could see push things, but are still surprising. Will definitely dig deeper there.

subtle pasture
#

I mean, in theory, there's no reason you couldn't get that 24-core 3rd gen Threadripper, disable the weakest cores to clock it higher, and then have all the memory bandwidth and PCIe lanes you could ever want

#

Bit wasteful, though

#

Really wish AMD would just release some lower core count Threadrippers at reasonable prices for the gamers who want larger rigs

#

If I go AM4... One graphics card, two NVMe drives, and I'm out of PCIe lanes. Sucks... ๐Ÿ˜•

tepid roost
#

My immediate approach before diving more into this would still be to get either an R5 or 7, clock it silly, throw an AIO on it, spend the budget on GPU.

subtle pasture
#

I mean, at this point, AMD's solution appears to be "DDR5"

clear ferry
#

Just go for a Superdome Flex, 896 cores \ 64TB RAM, 128 possible NVMe slots, 64 possible graphics cards and throw in a few 100Gbit cards and you'll be golden

subtle pasture
#

They can literally throw RAM that's clocked twice as fast at the problem, rather than widening the memory bus to 256 bit

tepid roost
#

No

clear ferry
#

YES

tepid roost
#

๐Ÿ˜›

clear ferry
#

Actually I don't see why not, it is pure scalable x86

subtle pasture
#

Kinda funny. Anyone who invested in X99 has been playing with DDR5-levels of memory bandwidth since 2016

#

DDR4 3400 in quad channel is going to provide roughly the same amount of bandwidth as DDR5 6800 in dual-channel, and that's not the fastest DDR4 you could attempt to run, either...

#

Granted, DDR5 has some nice latency improvements coming along for the ride

indeed they have their place, for home networking it has been great - esp the ability to get support

#

not sure what i would choose if i was back in the buisness helping small businesses with IT

clear ferry
#

Eh, the biggest problem is their scalability, most of them can't be expanded beyond their original CPU and memory

deft pewter
clear ferry
#

Sure

ancient wren
#

memory can be expanded on all of them

night zodiac
#

Mine works great for plex

ancient wren
#

this unit only came with 2gb and official only supported 6gb - it has 16gb in it

deft pewter
#

I'm actually researching NAS enclosures right now. This is good timing.

clear ferry
ancient wren
#

great for anything that doesn't hammer CPU

ancient wren
#

some of the consumer ones were fixed

night zodiac
#

the CPU's used in most of the ones I've seen are limited to 8GB of memory. I see people doing guides for 16GB and being happy that they see it but the CPU specs says it can't use it.

clear ferry
#

Not true for qnap

#

Which is why I mentioned both

night zodiac
#

My DS918+ came with 4gb and I put 8gb in it. woooooooo

ancient wren
night zodiac
#

wat

ancient wren
#

my DS918+ has 16gb in it ๐Ÿ™‚

night zodiac
#

okay, and half of it is being used

#

even though you see it say 16gb in your UI

clear ferry
#

Even worse, CPUs that can't address larger memory sizes will crash when passing their limit

#

Even if memory is visible

ancient wren
#

with apps like VMM and docker i can absolutely use all 16GB

clear ferry
#

VMM ๐Ÿคข

sonic hamlet
#

does your NAS not use the free ram for caching?

night zodiac
#

perhaps I read it incorrectly years ago. oh well

sonic hamlet
#

or is that simply not reflected when you're looking at memory

clear ferry
#

@sonic hamlet only proper filesystems do that ;-)

ancient wren
sonic hamlet
#

iirc, that's what Linux does. Not sure if you can see this cached memory in htop

#

@clear ferry but what about at the file level. i.e. many clients are requesting the same files

clear ferry
#

@sonic hamlet all modern operating systems do application and other cache though

#

Windows calls it smart cache I believe

deft pewter
#

Are TerraMaster any good? I'm trying to figure out why their 5 bay NAS is cheaper than a lot of 2/4 bay alternatives.

clear ferry
#

Never heard of

deft pewter
sonic hamlet
#

right, so in terms of upgrading a nas to 16GB of ram, is it safe to assume the NAS will use all available RAM for file caching, but free it when requested by other apps?

clear ferry
#

No

#

If you want file level caching, use zfs

ancient wren
sonic hamlet
#

@ancient wren I think the white lines in the mem bar reflect OS-level cache

ancient wren
#

i will defer to you, i don't use it very often

sonic hamlet
#

haven't heard of ZFS before. this looks interesting!

clear ferry
#

Never heard of?

ancient wren
#

ZFS is pretty cool

clear ferry
#

Blasphemy

sonic hamlet
#

"To make the most efficient use of real memory, Linux automatically uses all free RAM for buffer cache, but also automatically makes the cache smaller when programs need more memory."

#

I think that summarizes it pretty well

clear ferry
#

Buffer isn't necessarily what you think it is

sonic hamlet
#

ah true

ancient wren
night zodiac
#

I just remember Synology for sure suggests only 8GB. I figured they had a reason.

ancient wren
#

i unlearn things i knew to be true on a weekly basis ๐Ÿ™‚

ancient wren
#

they want you to buy more expensive units ๐Ÿ™‚

night zodiac
#

Does the UI still bug in the control panel when you use 16gbb?

#

there was something wonky with it

sonic hamlet
#

that's dangerous for people like me who would rather pay $1000-$2000 up front for a NAS that I will barely use vs paying for monthly cloud storage

night zodiac
#

I spent a ton of money on my NAS and haven't used it at all really

#

๐Ÿ™‚

ancient wren
#

and if you ring up support they may ask you to revert to lower mem for testing - i have never had that issue, i have had them insist i put back in official synology sticks of ram

night zodiac
#

A ton for something I don't use, that is

clear ferry
#

Long live truenas

night zodiac
#

yeah, I bought the official jazz for support stuff, I remembber that now that you mention

#

lol

#

I never imagine I will need it but I bought their brand

ancient wren
#

i had the mem controller on a DS918+ fail - i could only prove it when their ram was in, because when it wasn't they accused my perfectly fine crucial ram of being funky

night zodiac
#

Scyto, I have a 3d printer I have literally never put together

#

bought it 6 months ago or so

#

Ender 5 pro or something

ancient wren
#

nice, i made the mistake of getting a A350 snapmaker 2

night zodiac
#

I lost the screws moving so now I need to track down a bunch of bullshit

ancient wren
#

i realized i will never time to do anything with it

night zodiac
#

well, the ender support is nonexistent so ๐Ÿ˜›

#

I would love a lot of enclosures for all of the 8266 things i make

#

Scyto, I think the resource monitor might have been the wonky thing with 16gb memory but it looks fine from your screenshot

ancient wren
#

ok, i have to go back to what i was supposed to be doing (spring cleaning) , this was fun, first time I have hung out here. Only in week 2 as a Homeassitant person. (been doing home automation for 7+ years)

Did I back the wrong horse with Zwave? Is zigbee more reliable?

amber bramble
#

no

deft pewter
#

Just cheaper ๐Ÿคฃ

amber bramble
#

reliability seems to be about the same between the two in my house. zigbee devices seem to have a few more quirks though and the nice cheap aqara sensors like to drop off the network a ton for me

night zodiac
#

I don't really have any issues with zigbee, no experience with zwave

#

I'm having a slight issue with z2m right now but I am pretty sure if nothing works soon I can just smash my face into the monitor and call it good

#

reading through 6 different repos that all touch my issue

hushed basalt
#

What's the issue

night zodiac
#

I actually ended up looking over at my monitor and one of the PR's was authored bby someone chatting in zigbee. if you look in #zigbee-archived @hushed basalt

#

Nvm, reading back my convo isn't very linear. Something is telling z2m my device is allowed to OTA update but when it tries, the firmware is not listed in the repo they keep firmwares

#

so it tries to do something that never will work

#

so I have thousands and thousands of lines of errors ๐Ÿ˜›

#

walt is going to look into it more for me tomorrow and if not I'll have to make an issue on their git

#

Does anybody know how to order the home assistant blue bundle in the Netherlands?

#

It only gives me options for Korea USA Sweden and Switzerland ๐Ÿคจ

night zodiac
#

Can you not order from the nearest one? ๐Ÿ˜›

#

When I looked the other day, it was out of stock :/

formal plover
#

oh noo ๐Ÿ˜…

night zodiac
#

I think if I remember right, some time in Feb. I should have ordered one when I could ๐Ÿ˜›

#

wait, that is for the temporary solution. The actual blue says March/April

#

I think you just need an ODROID-N2+ and emmc storage and it's the same but I might be completely wrong

formal plover
#

yeah true but i am running a gaming laptop with proxmox atm for home assistant troughout the whole house and i was hoping this could replace that

night zodiac
formal plover
#

but i was thinking about using LEDfx, ADGuard, MotionEye, Deconz, Emulated HUE, and stuff like that so idk if an odroid will be enough to handle everything

#

so im kinda stressy about ordering if it maybe wont hold my setup

night zodiac
#

I don't use a single thing you listed so I don't know, haha

formal plover
#

haha all kinda cpu and ram intensive stuff i gues cause my rpi3 lagged

night zodiac
#

ssd?

formal plover
#

no just sd

#

would ssd help?

night zodiac
#

then it never had a fair chance ๐Ÿ˜›

formal plover
#

and is that possible on an rpi3?

#

or should i get an rpi4 then?

night zodiac
#

well I'd just get an odroid if it were me

#

emmc is reliable and isn't clunky like an external ssd

#

my pi's have ssds though

#

I wasn't really aware of odroid stuff until the blue came around

formal plover
#

imma give the rpi3 with an ssd a second chance and if that doesnt work ill order an odroid

night zodiac
#

I am not booting from ssd, I just have data partition on it

formal plover
night zodiac
#

yeah, I run a lot of stuff on my server, nas, and other pi

#

rather than my HA pi

#

hrmm, you would definitely want data to not be on sd card

#

I see now that pretty much everything there needs to be on same machine, lol

#

influx with sd card sounds interesting

formal plover
#

i think as my HA for an all go to sollution, make one backup and have everything done. need to update something? sure go to HA, need to see the security cams? HA. the appliances throughout the home like the washer, dryer, roomba, etc, everything

night zodiac
#

oh, for sure. I have everything linked to HA that I need to some way or another

formal plover
#

oh thanks

#

that will come in handy sooner or later haha

night zodiac
#

I have been looking at node-red but I am not really into clicking programs together and it looks like that. I don't really need it me thinks.

#

I was looking at mopidy but I think I'd rather just continue to stream my music through plex if needed and use spotify separate

#

I use Nest cams so don't need motioneye

formal plover
#

i mainly use spotify for music and plex only for movies and series

night zodiac
#

I use spotify for most music but plex has a lot of things not on spotify

#

well, my plex

formal plover
#

haha, yeah i am still searching for a way to stream my Spotify to my google home minis and echo devices throughout the house simultaneously and being able to control the volumes/inputs manually from home assistant

night zodiac
#

ez

#

throw away echo devices

formal plover
#

yeah ive been thinking about that

night zodiac
#

I only keep one of them so I can see amazon delivery alerts

formal plover
#

but then i should buy 3 extra home minis

night zodiac
#

I don't do a single thing with it

#

yeah, lots of minis!

formal plover
#

๐Ÿ˜†

#

are those google minis?

night zodiac
#

I have one in pretty much every room. I'll add them soon.

#

the speakers

#

I just need one more room and I think I might add another one with voice disabled to kitchen for an output only
