#

my remote looks like this

#

top thing is a D-pad with a button in the middle

clear ferry
#

Oh, I've only seen the dig uno

last dirge
#

back button, menu button, mic button, and the shiny part at the bottom between the two matte parts is a touch potentiometer

#

so on the things it'll let me control the volume on, I can use that slider to do it

#

but sometimes it won't let me control the volume

tepid roost
#

Ah yea central in this is that we don't really use on-screen apps to select media - in stead using mobile devices for that part.

last dirge
#

the shield is pretty awesome

#

I mostly just use Plex and Netflix on it though

tepid roost
last dirge
#

right

#

one of the recent firmware updates allowed for volume control but I think that's via IR and not CEC

#

I don't know if my receiver supports CEC either

#

looks like it can be CEC or IR

#

maybe I should check that out

#

my old ass TV has no API so I'm using an IR blaster to control it

tepid roost
#

If that does not work out and you have a PC nearby that setup, an old setup I had was all about CEC - featuring a cool little gadget which I would insert on the HDMI line and get a USB cable out the side - to intercept all CEC instructions on my home theater machine. You could use something similar to forward to HA.

clear ferry
#

Not supporting CEC? What is this? The 90s?

last dirge
#

it's an Onkyo

#

I control it via HTTP API

chilly nymph
#

@clear ferry I have now taken ownership of the new house and have been able to remove the covers to the cat6 jacks. Plot twist. They are wired correctly. But there are only two drops in the basement. So now I am at a loss lol

#

I've opened every junction box. Nothing.

last dirge
#

the TV that's connected to it is like 10 years old

clear ferry
#

๐Ÿ˜‚

last dirge
#

@chilly nymph what color is the jacket?

chilly nymph
#

So...next step is find my crimper, crimp the cables in the basement, and at least find out which two are active

last dirge
#

that's a lot of work

chilly nymph
#

Gray.

last dirge
#

just stick a 9v on a pair

#

go around with your meter

chilly nymph
#

It's not a lot of work. I have a cable tester.

#

They need to be crimped anyway

last dirge
#

if they're actually usable

chilly nymph
#

And it's only 2 drops

last dirge
#

I'd bet they're daisy chained around for POTS

chilly nymph
#

It's RJ45

#

Not RJ11

last dirge
#

and?

chilly nymph
#

And the jacks say "internet" on them so I don't think the intent was POTS

last dirge
#

my house was wired for POTS with CAT5e

chilly nymph
#

But my initial concern was that they were daisy chained

last dirge
#

with RJ45 plates

#

got an attic?

chilly nymph
#

I mean using cat5e is common for telephone

#

A finished attic

#

BUT they would have had to go out of their way to daisy chain these

#

Because... They aren't daisy chained at the boxes

last dirge
#

are they in a structured wiring box wherever they end up?

chilly nymph
#

Yes, single gang

last dirge
#

not what I meant

chilly nymph
#

Then educate me

last dirge
#

prior to "smart home" stuff there used to be structured wiring boxes

#

usually about the size of your average home alarm system

#

and it had places inside you could put in coax splitters/amps, punchdown blocks, SOHO network switch, etc

chilly nymph
#

Oh. That. I had one of those at my old place. No, this guy cheaped out. Just has it coming out of a hole in the baseboard in the basement

last dirge
#

are all of the ports in separate rooms?

chilly nymph
#

Yes

last dirge
#

got a fox and hound?

chilly nymph
#

Not sure what you mean by that, but I do have a wire tracer

last dirge
#

RF style?

#

I'd hook that up and see if you can get any more info

#

it'd be really weird for them to go nowhere

#

maybe two of the rooms just connect to each other and the previous owner was a fan of LAN parties

chilly nymph
#

It's a builder. A flip.

#

An uncooperative builder, at that, I've asked about the jacks several times

last dirge
#

ah, then the chances of it being cut off and sealed in a wall go WAY up

chilly nymph
#

Yeah that's my concern

tepid roost
#

Wired to the mains ๐Ÿ˜›

chilly nymph
#

Hah

tepid roost
#

No worries - power over ethernet!

last dirge
#

heh

chilly nymph
#

Lol

#

I'm hoping I can at least figure out where these are, even if they are in the wall

#

I don't mind cutting open my wall if I at least know the right place

last dirge
#

RF wire tracer FTW

tepid roost
#

At least with my PoE theory they should show up nice & bright.

chilly nymph
#

Of course I forgot the batteries for my wire tracer. ๐Ÿคฃ

tidal bronze
last dirge
#

what?

#

if nothing's hooked up, to anything it's an easy way to test

#

not as easy as putting the gator clips from a wire tracer though

tidal bronze
#

Nothing hooked up came late, at least it came

last dirge
#

he said he just got keys

#

so if something's hooked up, it's not his ๐Ÿ™‚

tidal bronze
#

Simple task with a fluke toner/tracer

chilly nymph
#

@tidal bronze that's what I have. I'll be figuring it out after I go get some batteries lol

tidal bronze
#

Nice. The best in the market. Dead batteries in toner/tracer is a pretty common problem. ๐Ÿ™‚

#

Although, if you have CAT5 injecting tone to all 8 conductors would be the easiest to trace. If you have a CAT5 tester/injector, I would crimp the ends and inject tone to all 4 pairs. Easier to trace even through the jacket

last dirge
#

woo, CEC works on the shield

I'm quite impressed at the tenacity of some people, ended up in a Reddit discussion about cost of daycare and since our daycare is 1/15th of daycare in the us, he mentioned "yoU PaY hiGH TAXes ThEN?" And I said I pay 31% on $100k+ and he replied with"acTuALLy yoU mEAN 39%, anD YOu fORGOT tO menTIOn thE 25% TaX on eVerYTHing elSE"

#

So apparently I pay 8% tax more than I know of

#

I need to call someone

last dirge

it's not worth it man

people who can't understand that they're paying MORE through consumption than they would through a tax that would provide those things are a lost cause

last cedar
#

I am defo in the wrong line of work if you make that much, atx ๐Ÿ˜‚

deft pewter
#

Look at it this way... if atx can make that much, anyone can.

last dirge
#

you don't make that much?

deft pewter
#

I'm British. Our salaries all seem low compared to other places.

last dirge
#

I make what most people would consider "a lot"

clear ferry
#

To be fair, the real number is $125k but I didn't want to anger him

clever mortar
#

TBF, making that kind of money in the UK isn't impossible

#

All you need to do is be a specialist too ๐Ÿ˜‰

deft pewter
#

I'm happy with what I make, especially given my area has low cost of living. I still have plenty of opportunity to earn more, I'm only 35 now and fairly new to my field.

last dirge
#

but those same people don't understand how obscene $400k/yr is

clever mortar
#

Yup, I'd rather earn less and be happy, than earn more and not be happy

deft pewter
#

I know it'd be hard to turn down more money but once you pass 6 figures, I don't see how it actually matters much anymore.

clear ferry
#

As long as I have fun

#

I just want what I'm worth

clever mortar
#

I've turned down about a 50% pay rise before

deft pewter
#

If I can afford a comfortable house, a few luxuries and don't struggle with paying bills, that's fine by me.

clever mortar

And a doubling once, but that would have involved moving somewhere I really don't want to live...

last dirge

Yeah, can't say I'm not just a little bit jealous. He told me not to get rid of it too, but I was too high on the fact I had effectively quadrupled my whopping $1,000 or so

#

But this is why I'm working now to pay the bills and he's working because he wants to do something with his time

Nothing wrong with selling too early it's always better than losing everything

chilly nymph
#

Well so part of my problem is I work in finance

#

Which means if I'm "beating the market," I'm happy.

#

I'm also paid to be "risk averse" in my job

tidal bronze
#

Lol. My wife is in finance so I know where you are coming from ๐Ÿ™‚

chilly nymph

I'm sure

My "free time" problem is also that I work in finance

Since my primary interests are technology and music.

I have almost no interest in what I do for work. I'm just good at it

Banking/Investments

chilly nymph

Because I always looked at it like a penny stock. Throw some in, and if you lose it, you should have known better

banking and investments is a very large portion of finance lol

I'm an analyst, primarily in the REIT sector

tidal bronze
#

Nice. I have no clue other than stocks and BTC

chilly nymph

I mean if you boil that down to securities, that's a fairly large blanket

If you classify cryptocurrencies as securities, that is

I would not go that far ๐Ÿ™‚

Something to grab and forget for me.

With the current situation how is REIT?

It's pretty normal in human authored documents for human consumption for revision details to run in order too

#

Big formal documents will have a table summarising the changes, starting with the original and then a new row for each revision, so you can read them in order

Hello everyone! What is the perfect group to ask about my HA update issue?

#

Not sure which install you're using? If you have system_health enabled you can check Configuration -> Info, or see the following.

  • If you bought the Home Assistant Blue, you're using HassOS, flashed an image, or booted a VM with an image you're using #330990055533576204

  • If you installed Linux and then ran a script to install HA and have add-ons then you have #330944238910963714

  • If you're running docker commands or use a Docker manager and have no add-ons then you have #449717345808547842

  • Finally, if you use pip to install or upgrade you have #551864459891703809

Having difficulty chosing an install method? See this blog post for guidance.

why do you need a screen in your car dashboard that shows the stuff you see with your eyes when you tilt your head away from that screen?

You can see all the surrounding streets behind buildings without one?

I gotta learn that trick.

IMO, people should plan and study a route before they get behind the wheel, so I kinda agree with you ๐Ÿ˜‰
