@tidal bronze You are tempting me
also, is your synology_dsm integration is working? mine broke in 2020.12.0
i am trying to move away from xiaomi gateway and i read that with raspberry pi + zigbee adapter i am able to do so
i am heavily invested in aqara switches and yeelight ceilings
Oh wait the 130€ for ODrdoid is without eMMC so it would be easily 200€ fully setup in Europe
I'll install DSM 7, lol. I don't even use my NAS really these days
I just updated one drive on my NAS - a schucked 18tb
I'd say you guys convinced me to buy a NUC but I was actually tabbed out for that entire discussion while I bought an NUC.
for the script help i need to go in integration ? or automations ?
Glad I didn't tab back in to see you talking me out of it 🤣
#automations-archived, Steepy. Read the topics and it'll tell you.
which NUC did you decide on?
I went for this one. Good amount of RAM and storage, seemed a decent price. Even other machines by the same brand are more expensive for less storage, so I think they made a mistake with the pricing 😄 https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08PL895D3
£169 for a Celeron J4125, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD. 10W TDP... way better than the 240W workstation I'm using now.
oh damn that's really slim
Yeah, the dimensions are awesome. I'll just sit it on top of my main PC tower until I find a better home
Yes
weird....I cannot even delete the integration
does it have a fan mono?
works after DSM 7 as well.
No fan but I don't think I'll ever work it hard enough to care.
Think I'll go Buster + supervised, but only so I have a bit of flexibility over the OS.
@deft pewter that'll take you far
Just do KVM tbh
And run VM if you want add-ons 🤢
Why KVM?
Me: "This Aruba switch you picked doesn't support 10gbps at all, and it requires an additional module for stacking. Shouldn't we try to future-proof a little?"
Coworker: "Well, this switch is already $1200, and the one with 10gbps and stacking built-in is nearly $10,000"
Me: Pulls up a 48 port Cisco switch for $700 with the same switching capacity, built-in stacking, and two 10gbps ports
HPE/Aruba price-gouging worse than Cisco. Never thought I'd see the day...
I've got a beelink s1 running win10 hosting that hassos vm. Been good so far. Been little dive it came with its almost full.. Need to upgrade it.. The only negative with beelink is the shoddy bios.. No power restore apci functions. So if you lose power or stays dead till you go press the button.
fanless nuc sounds pretty great. I'll try to remember the beelink next time I need a small PC
Because it is the preferred hypervisor for Linux ? 🤣
They are decent for internet browser /email machines. Underpowered for much else.
@subtle pasture curious about the actual model numbers there ;-)
So.. Great for grandma!
@clear ferry JL321A ARUBA 2930M 48G vs. Cisco SG350X-48
$1250 vs. $700, but the Cisco switch supports stacking (no additional module required) and has two SFP+ ports for 10gbps connectivity (the Aruba switch has no 10gbps capable ports). They both have the same 176 gbps switching capacity, and they both support basic L3 operation.
I meant more... why should I bother with a hypervisor over just doing Docker?
Because supervised install is.... Fickle, not for the faint of heart and a shitshow in the end ;-)
@subtle pasture looks pretty similar, is the "Linksys" full layer 3 too? And does it scale to 10 per stack? 🤣
@clear ferry Not a Linksys switch... the 350x came out well after Cisco sold Linksys 😕
Not really. I've used Cisco-Linksys switches, and they don't run the same OS as these SG series switches at all
Configs aren't cross-compatible, either
It's not iOS, though the command and config structure mimics iOS
iOS is limited to Catalyst switches
But, anyway... I can find no reason for the Aruba to be so much more expensive, given the specs, performance, and warranty
Poor reseller discounting probably
Cisco is always more aggressive
First needle free etc
What really blows my mind is the price-jump on the Aruba side to get some 10gbps ports
That goes from "unreasonable" to "you're fucking kidding me, right?"
I had Cisco undercut us on a customer once, like, 50% cheaper, but when the customer wanted to add 4blades to their ucs it was cheaper to buy a whole enclosure plus 4 servers from us, and they still had enough money to buy two more servers from us
Like, I'm sure the $10,000 Aruba switch does more than the SG350X, but we don't actually... need that... we just need stacking and a couple 10gbps ports
Def biased reseller or poor campaigns
So if I go the KVM route, I get the full OS again and less pain?
Yes
Hmm, that sounds tempting. Either way, I just start with Debian as the base, right? It's just the next steps that differ?
Yup
Debian 4 lyfe
Then add what you need
Can run both docker and kvm
But run haos in kvm
y'all see the CentOS replacement? https://rockylinux.org/
did you miss the $10000 Cisco licence to be able to login and configure the switch? :-p
Lulz
@inner vault Nope, SG series switches include the licensing built in... that's part of the "Small Business" package. Only Catalyst series need additional licensing.
I still remember Cisco Nexus 6000, $1000 per port you want to activate, comes with 8 ports enabled
Cisco doesn't even hide the firmware updates for SG series switches behind a login or paywall, they're just there...
huh wild
@clear ferry As for the sick face on the Rocky Linux link... at least this is back to being an independent free-ified version of RHEL
Unlike the now-defunct CentOS, which was taken over by IBM
Original CentOS founder started the project, as well. Dude came out of nowhere and picked up the mantle.
Eh, most centos shops I've talked to (with a couple of thousand centos bare metal nodes) are just considering moving to something else because rhel are see ju enn tees
We'll see
Not sure what their best options are, mostly HPC environments
I mean, anyone running CentOS right now basically has to consider moving... they're shuttering everything except CentOS Stream, which is the rolling pre-release version
Yup
Rocky will be the closest to a drop-in replacement
I know of the environments ran rocks, which used to be popular in hpc
Which again is based on centos I believe
Yup
referring to this picture, do i still add/create automation in HA UI if i am using mqtt ?
Yes, and that's a topic for other channels 😉
Read the channel topic at the top of the window
that gif was obnoxious, had to remove
o okay
I wonder how far I can throw one of those swimming pool torpedos
About as far as you would trust it?
Yes.
And the boys of the NYPD choir were singing Galway bay
I have only seen the tiniest bit of snow once this year
It snowed for like 4 minutes this year, haha.
I'm used to nine months of snow, this ain't too bad
Only nine months? Those are rookie numbers.
That's the safest Christmas lighting hack I've seen.
I take it that's the breakers on the right? They don't look like that here.
yep
yee, ours look weird because we choose 120/240 at the breaker panel
every row alternates between -120 and +120. we use the single breakers to get 120 between one of those poles and the neutral. we use a double breaker to get the 240 between the -120 and +120
a device can also use 120 and 240 easy so it can use 240 for the beefy things inside of the device and 120 for rest.
lol btw this was a meme not my actual setup
yes, haha. just explaining the weird breakers because I find them neat, haha
https://share.busheezy.dev/VtLH0Q.png https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMmUoZh3Hq4 This video explains it well and is the only reason I know this
It's more than 120V. It's even more than the other 120V! It is the sum of the two (and sometimes a different two!) that makes us who we are. Learn about the US electrical system in this not-at-all snarky video!
Would you care for some links?
Firstly are foremostly, here's that video about fans I referenced;

And ot...
Muurica power
😛
in the video he says "If you are European, this looks horrifying. 'That's okay, we're coping."
lol
Hello. Anyone here has TV with Fire TV OS? Not the Fire TV sticks, but TV with Fire TV OS integrated.
'shouldn't light your tv on fire
I like that guy. Much because he looks like the famous Swedish parody TV show host Kurt Olsson
Turn on captions when watching his videos, btw.
He explains things well enough for it to stick to my brain.
The visuals are very nice.
what half assed norweigian night club is that?
How much effort is reasonable to sink into evaluating HA before determining if it can replace the older, custom built automation system? Ref. sunken cost fallacy? Or is everyone here sunken deep into HA anyways, i.e. speaking to the choir?
Only you can answer that.
Is there a mentoring program in HA?
nope
It's probably best to make a forum post with information about your current setup and what possible solutions there are to replace it
list all the hardware you have as well as any software
Thanks. Didn't mean to turn this into support. Just some random lounge meta talk about HA 😄
This random lounge for discussion of racoons 😂
Yeah, we don't have racoons in Norway, so we talk about the weather instead
Just cross the border. There's at least one raccoon in Sweden.
But yeah, HA started as a way to get rid of remote controls in living room. And now it decides whsat I buy. I got trådfri lights just because I could control with HA 😂
Not much border crossing going on these days -- unless you want to be confined to a your room and/or hotel-room for 14 days
Sharing hotel room with strangers, from what I hear 😂
haha, is that the new covid-tinder thing? get locked up in some random hotel for 14 days. Who else is here?
I knew there was something off about atx.
oh dear
This is disturbing
Y'all love me
Yes
🤏 🤏 🤏
I made a cute server :)
Yes, it be smol
Probablt should have got an e5 16xx system to be honest
For more memory and more cores, could have run scale
As it is now, capped at 4c4t (4c8t max) and 32GB RAM
You're right about the first bit.
All raccoons are furry 😄
I'm furry in the ears
you are likely furry in every orifice
Mono understands
Uh, yeah... 'raccoon' should never be shortened.
Hi Guys, sorry to bother you, are the community website facing some issues?
I get http 500 server error or 502 bad gateway while brosiing the forum
Yeah. AWS a few weeks ago. GCP today. Now HA forums.
Hackers always go for the big targets.
What? It's just someone else's server.
Can't hate the cloud if you know the cloud isn't real.
☁️
anyone got the unknown error when trying to upgrade
No Wi-Fi or Bluetooth
Support for Z-Wave and Zigbee by external USB adaptor (not included)
✅ Able to copy+paste
you guys are better than that
considering you really shouldn't run HA from wifi in the first place..
All you Home Assistant users... make sure that you got a backup, holy shit :D
my proxmox backups just saved my ass
Backups are useless untill you can prove that restore of it is working
^
but everything worked out - more or less
rm -rf removed the right docker directory... but on the WRONG machine... well, I'd have my duplicati backup, but it was faster to restore the snapshot from my proxmox (which runs the main docker host)
@tidal bronze we are aware you run your HA connected through dialup
On hook all day!
Quick Question... when combining two "items" in yaml, such as two switches, two covers, two binary_sensors, must you call binary_sensor: each time, or can you do, such:
binary_sensor:
- platform: gpio
pin:
number: D0
...
pin:
number: D1
...
And also:
cover:
- platform: template
name: "..."
open_action:
- ...
close_action:
- ...
name: "...2"
open_action:
- ...
<etc>
Correct, you may only group under the binary_sensor | cover header, but can include multiple instances like so
- platform: gpio
pin:
number: D0
...
- platform: gpio
pin:
number: D1
...
so you have to repeat the 'platform', but not the main header
Bingo, this is what I was looking for
ESPHome, esp is offline at the moment. Moved to a new house that has two garage doors instead of 1, so trying to use the same esp8266 to control both.
Thank you.
paste your setup when you're done, and good luck! (wish I had a garage - for all the tinkering and automation and what not)
Rule of thumb is basically, kinda, if two of alike, call each with a -platform: xxx
precisely, there are a couple of integrations where it breaks down, but by and large, that's the syntax for all of the core sensors and devices
I couldn't figure out which sub-#channel to ask in 🙂 lol
Maybe add an #Iamanidiotwithyaml or #esphome
@slender axle posted a code wall, it is moved here --> https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/ksYFyRYXfG/
🙂 my bad
@clear ferry I was bitching on Facebook about our asymmetrical internet speeds
And some corporate spokeman offered to sell me symmetrical enterprise ethernet
I said it'd be cheaper for me to just move to Norway :D
Finished kitting my old Pi3b+ out for a friend, been a long night, HA doesn’t like a lot of usb/ssd adapters lol
anyone try Rhasspy or GassistPi ?
@obsidian ibex That's more of a Pi issue than a HA issue. UBoot only supports so many adapters
Make sure you've fired up the latest Raspbian at least once on there, since it'll automatically update uboot, giving your adapter the best shot at working.
Which USB-SATA adapter did you end up going with?
@subtle pasture every adapter (4 lol) booted Raspberry OS from SSD no problem, the issue was only with HA. I bought the Euluteng one recommended in a guide and it does NOT work as advised haha. Old seagate caddy’s worked best for me, a Sabrent one worked fine for usb2 (rpi3). It’s been a long night of trial and error
Lulz
@ripe sierra #330990055533576204
Ops sorry
If only there was a channel topic here
is it possible to watch the Advanced users stream from the conference somewhere ?
ISTR it was going to be recorded and published - details should be on the blog and in #announcements when ready
The NUC I ordered at 6pm last night just arrived. Shame I gotta do some work before I can play with it 😦
At least my internet doesn't suck ass now, so I can download Debian in minutes instead of hours.
Thou oldeth interwebbeth hath sucketh ?
36Mbps 🤣
350Mbps now. Could go faster if I spent more but I'm happy with a tenfold improvement for now.
With both of us working from home, 36Mbps struggled if we were both on a call at the same time.
Sure, when you need four cameras each to be attractive on onlyfans
4k to spot all those pimples
Yeah, I've gone from 100 Mb/s to 4 Mb/s to 40 (+-10) MB/s to 500 Mb/s in the least few years... and it's nice to finally be back on stable, reliable, Internet
Yeah, going from cable to ADSL was painful
FTTC was less bad, but the stability of it was shocking
I haven't been on anything dialup related since the early 90's
First, chill.
Second, this isn't a support channel.
Check the topics of the other channels to see where to post
If you need help with #330990055533576204 see that channel, and tone it down 😉
(Oh, and WiFi for that is covered in the docs)
Head over to the right channel and then we can help 😉
running on wifi 🤢
🤮
Quick question: I have issues restoring a snapshot after a crash, what channel to use for asking the question on this?
Not sure which install you're using? If you have system_health enabled you can check Configuration -> Info, or see the following.
-
If you're using HassOS, flashed an image, or booted a VM with an image you're using #330990055533576204
-
If you installed Linux and then ran a script to install HA and have add-ons then you have #330944238910963714
-
If you're running
dockercommands or use a Docker manager and have no add-ons then you have #449717345808547842 -
Finally, if you use
pipto install or upgrade you have #551864459891703809
Having difficulty chosing an install method? See this blog post for guidance.
Hi, does anybody know how I can fully open up a password protected snapshot on another system (windows 10 or mac)?
There's no support for Home Assistant here - please look at the other channels for that. If you can't work out which is relevant, start in #general-archived
No politics, religion, or any other obviously contentious topics! Please ensure you've read the Code of Conduct (https://www.home-assistant.io/code_of_conduct/), and #rules.
Remember when reporting spam to include a screenshot of the spam and the user's handle (eg @spammer#123)
☝️ No support for HA here 😉
OK, new to discord, so don't know those kind of things yet. Learning as we go hu? I posted my question in #general-archived
No worries - just take the time to read the channel topics
Maybe #the-water-cooler's topic should read "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here" 😂
Or just feck off ye old cwnts
🤣
There was this blueprint channel. Is it no longer there or my discord is behaving crazy?
See it now after I clicked the link. but it was not visible earlier. So is the #tag. And no haven't collapsed
You may have muted it and have Discord set to hide muted channels.
It's definitely still there.
okay. I killed the discord app and restarted. Now it is showing...hmmm
German is cray
That is not regular german is it ? is it austrian ?
I think the only thing more stupid is languages that have a different written and spoken system.
I haven't practiced my german in many years 🤣
I like japanese like that, it is pronounced exactly as it is written
no buts
Hello Bokmal and Nynorsk 👋
It is considered an official language some places
like in my hometown
jewsus christ the signs at the hospital
Then there is southern sami, and northern sami too
Triple K actually
never noticed that before
Yeah, I played in a finnish guild for years
I tried to learn the logic
but.... "yeah if the gender of the noun is female and the noun is followed by a verb then you have to change the gender of the second verb to match the cycle of the moon"
and I'm pretty... good with languages mostly
but finnish, nah, I'll skip that
and tonal languages like thai, no thanks
We had a Hungarian contractor for a while. I tried to learn some to be friendly but never got past saying hello 😂
goulash
Especially if it's served in a bread bowl 🤤
When we can travel again, I want to go back to Prague. The food and beer there is great.
We stayed at some cheap hostel 😄
beer and female tourist attractions 🤤
A lot of the european porn seems to come from Prague
With your exchange rate, 5 star hotels in Europe might be okay. With ours... Nope.
we usually do 3-4 star, unless it is very cheap, then we do 5
Although it's only £92 a night for Hotel Paris. That's not bad.
Let's see what prices are like once travel goes back to normal and hotels aren't desperate for trade.
In london we have made London House Hotel our go to
but I now have apartments there through work, so we will probably do that with the baby
Mmm. The Tower Suite at Hotel Paris looks good. Not sure I can afford it though 😄
we did a regular suite, it was way plenty
🤣
felt compelled to buy a new shirt to be able to go to breakfast there
Even the rooms look good. Not sure I'd care about a suite,.
A bit posh?
I'll try to remember it if we go back. It's in Stare Mesto too, which is convenient.
Yup
I love how they named their old town... OId Town.
Same for most Norwegian and swedish old towns
they are just called "old town"
"gamlebyen" "gamlastan"
Just DIY one

Buy 4 x 14" HD monitors, glue them together, it'll be fine
Y'all so smart
You have enough LEDs. Build your own panel and control them with WLED
you aren't wrong
I will build a matrix display for my garage door next year
if I have time
2meter x 2meters should be good enough
Don't forget to build a range sensor so it can display a giant stop sign when you get too close.
or just flip off random kids if they get too close to my house
I use watch way too little
I'm so old I just rerun commands when I wait for stuff
i just realized you can recreate "WELCOME HOME, JENNIFER" from back to the future 2 using home assistant and geolocation sense.
Yeah I'll let my house yell WELCOME HOME, JENNIFER @ me when I come home... just to creep out some OneNight stands
reid "smart home solver" did a comparison on how you can recreate back to the future's smart home with today's products and tech. he's on youtube
I don't even have my own house 😄
want to be my ons though? 😏 🍆
woAH
interesting.....
moved my plex from a jail to docker
but it still thinks it's IP is the jail IP
which seems to screw with some stuff
why yes i have
lol wait is that a nk flag i see???
isnt there an apple tv skin that you can put on it tho?
you can make your tv remote control HA with Kodi, show me that Killer feature anywhere else 😄
tv remote controls kodi via cec, kodi sends command based on keys to HA
ooooh i gotta find a pi now
lel
or flash my apple tv 2nd gen lol
you can make use of the stupid colored buttons on your tv remote at least
so I changed the "preferred interface from epair0b to any, but it still believes it's IP to be the old one
now to grep on all files to find where that is hiding
we don't do that here
move along
new emojis 😂
lol wut 😂
MOAR EMOJIS 🇳🇴
Why does his hat have teeth?
Looks like that bearskin outfit atx wears around the house
how do you know that.....
He livestreams it...
Need a new thermostat (my nest decided to be running both heat & ac for the last little while....). What's a good one w/ decent integrations? Looking at ecobee, but open to others too
See #integrations-archived and answer
Looking for advice about a device to buy? Remember to provide guidance on:
- Which country you're in
- What your budget is
- What protocols you prefer (eg Zigbee, WiFi, Z-Wave)
- Any features you want (such as power monitoring, dimming, etc)
where in the world
does plex store path information about stuff
ex: boost::filesystem::last_write_time: No such file or directory lot of errors in the logs referring to my jail directory structure, that I cannot find anywhere in the plex config settings 🤔
I believe all media paths are stored in com.plexapp.library.db
It's a SQLite database
is that the viewed status database ?
Probably, but I don't know that for 100% sure
Might just have to open it and take a look 🤷♀️
I see a lot of stuff in there
but nothing about hardcoded paths
Warning: ex: boost::filesystem::last_write_time: No such file or directory: "/usr/local/share/plexmediaserver/Resources/Plug-ins-a78fef9a9", couldn't check file: "/usr/local/share/plexmediaserver/Resources/Plug-ins-a78fef9a9" def something hanging around from my jail
as that new path inside the container will be /config blablabla
checked all tables in com.plexapp.plugins.library.db
atx - I'll come back to this later after my next meeting, but do you know why a fresh install of Debian would just show 'static' post-installation? Setup menu was all visible but I can't see anything when I boot normally. HDCP maybe? What do I do? 😄
Can you login via SSH?
Haven't tried yet. I was hoping there was a graphic-less way to log in while I still have this hooked up to a monitor.
Probably an acpi or other kernel value
I've seen a lot of stuff like that in laptops over the years
It turns to static after the X environment is up?
Beelink Gemini M. The NUC I bought last night.
Intel UHD600 should be fine 🤔
There was a warning during installation about non-free software needed for some hardware. I didn't know what to do, so skipped that... But that's why I think it's HDCP.
Running through the installer again, the hardware warning is about the WiFi adaptor. I'll ignore it again 😂
Ethernet ftw
I can see about 12 pixels now... Progress! 🤷♂️
hi
whats the devices that does bluetooth le , wifi and run on an esp32?
err , tnot the device the project
@mild moss may wanna ask in #diy-archived and restruct your question cause I didn't understand a bit of that lol
ESPhome and Tasmota are popular
it s liek i flashed my esp32 with something a year ago , i dodnt remember the name of the project
what mono said most likely
Haven't figured out a way to actually reach the desktop yet but on my third attempt at installing, I thought I'd try the SSH installation 🤣
So I found home assistant and set it up without really looking at alternatives. Now I see OpenHab, has anyone used both and can say which they prefer? I am sure I will get a biased opinion towards HomeAssistant here but it's ok 😄
@deft pewter desktop environment for a server is eeeeeeeh anyway
Yeah, I'm going to try without a DE this time. Got closer on the third attempt... It hung when trying to get the non-free firmware. I'll disallow non-free this time.
If I can just get SSH going, I'll be okay from there
I think the answer depends on what you wants. OH is slower paced and so easier to keep up with, but significantly less capable. HA is faster paced, demands more from you, but is well worth it in the end
OK thanks, I'll stick with HA then.
if they had released HA blue before the rpi4 got usb boot support I may have even bought it and I am a cheap bastard lol
@forest edge I keep going back and forth on if HA Blue is a worthwhile purchase vs. buying a used NUC off ebay
At least for a while
Usually time to replace the battery in a 2nd hand one 😛
Old thin clients are cheap AF, as well
@subtle pasture would depend what your future plans for it are. if you don't plan to do much more than what you currently using it for on a rpi then I would say yes it's worth it.. considering the components that come with it's actually cheaper than buying them separate.
Eh? I'm looking at a $125 NUC right now with a faster processor, double the RAM, and double the SSD capacity...
How's the Blue worth it?
That's the wall I keep running into. lol
talking about the N2+ retail along with the eemc and case etc retail costs vs the Blue's cost
Right, it's a deal compared to buying the same components separately... but there are cheaper x86 options with way more power
but then those other options use more power etc
it all falls down to effiency and what you plan to do with it
why put HA on a nuc if you are not going to utilize the extra ram etc
Mostly because it'd be cheaper to do it that way than buying Blue 😛
well thats custom vs not
Cheaper than some Pi4 setups, as well
the blue is cheaper than some rpi4 setups lol
All you really win on with the ARM-based systems is power consumption
1.8w at idle on the N2+ vs. 8w at idle on the NUC
I see it as a waste of a perfectlky good nuc in my setup
cause i wouldn't utilize what the nuc would be capable of
course that depend son the nuc too
the nuc your looking at could be a turd lol
We're talking a dual core (2c 4t) i3 NUC. it's not that fast (though it is faster than the ARM CPU in a N2+)
NUC DC53427HYE, to be specific
NUC is a useless middle ground, not powerful enough to be the only server, and too powerful for single application use
I feel that way about the Pi4, honestly. Just running HA seems like a waste
if you had a few cameras it would fit the bill perfectly
If you are just using the core, then yes that is massively overkill
i run a discord bot, cameras and a few other things on mine. cpu averages around 50% when i'm not looking at it lol
That said, I'd almost choose the NUC just because it's A) cheap... really, really cheap for the hardware you get, and B) an all-in-one package (like HA Blue)
If I needed more power than a Pi provides, that is
depends on what you plans to do. again back to cameras.. the rpi is much better at encode/decode than that nuc's onboard chip
was that nuc even ddr4? saw it was discontinued back in 2010 or something
@subtle pasture atleast the blue is reasonably priced where you are, $230 in Sweden and $365 in Denmark 🤣
oof
Not that I would ever buy a kids toy in an eyesore colour 🤣
if it dosen't take up half his living space it's not a computer in atx's mind
nuc masterrace
@clear ferry Show us your setup, then. Running a full high availability cluster with HomeAssistant in a VM? 😛
You've seen my vCenter cluster. lol
I knew it. There's nothing down there.
got both darksky and openweathermap on the dashboard. preparing for the switch and darksky is always more closer to my actual weather conditions. gonna miss when it goes bye bye
ah openweather is UK.. bleh that's why lol
Yeah, it's because they only have weather stations this side of the pond.
Really bad for accuracy if you're 1500 miles from the nearest station.
And sometimes really bad if you're not
I found OWM worse than anything else, other than the generic MetOffice integration, which lacks any useful details
Well since when have forecasters been known to be accurate? 😄
To be fair, that one wasn't his fault
too bad noone slapped a weather.com intergration together. they bought out weatherunderground but there is an api. not sure if it's paid tho might be why
seems to me that openweathermap for me is just pulling noaa information and redirecting that back to me. there's already a direct noaa intergration soooo.. lol
I just had an idea that I think is probably going to be too much effort in practice to be worth it, but I have these ikea on/off switches and a lot of devices I'd like to control with them... I'm going to look into how much of a pain it'd be to have RFID tags near devices, and then scanning one with your phone would change the on/off switch assigned to you to control that device. So as you move around and spend time in different areas of the house you can change which device is being controlled by that switch, and carry the switch around with you instead of having to have a switch for every device that I think someone might want to control physically. Maybe the switch itself could have a tag on it that you read to register it to your phone so you become the controller of that switch.
Is this a crazy idea? Have I lost my mind?
You may not have lost your mind but you've lost your way.
HA stuff goes in other channels.
But for what it's worth... I carry a multi-switch with me at all times. My phone.
No need to scan anything when I move to a new room
voice control would actually work better in that scneario
than rfid tags and carrying a switch
part of me is happy that the magic home integration is pushing forward considering the existing flux led integration really only turns the bulbs on and off with very little control of anything else. many people will be thankful for it but the fact that it's cloud polling is absolutely gross 🤢
hmm, yeah good points all around.
(what is a good place for a discussion like this? I don't think any of the "support" rooms are appropriate, as it's more of bouncing ideas around than actually asking for technical help)
It seems that the Integration documentation web page is failing, https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/
its just me ?
@serene mortar syno photos, simply amazing. So glad I did the update.
@shy comet did you watch Tenet?
Is it me or the audio track is WTF?
its Nolan lol...the fact that a movie released in 2020 without 3d audio should tell you something haha
Neural X is usually great. This thing is all lumped together. Trying the 3rd one now.
Half the audio is decoded to heights.
cue helicopter noise
Reloading of the clip outputs on front and rear heights. Yep Nolan shit
oh great. not sure how to feel about the denmark mink thing with covid. culling millions of mink because of covid kind of pisses me off but at the same time scientist finding strains of convid in mink that can transfer to humans that the vaccines are useless against is kind of scary
Not to worry, we will deal with before it gets to KC
in some cases it manifests into FIP which is a fucked up way to die
ive had a kitten and an older cat pass from FIP
Are we going for a complete shutdown ?@shy comet
idk i just saw a bunch of restaurants petitioning to keep outdoor dining open
hell the one lady in sherman oaks at pineapple hill saloon compared her setup to a movie crew
customers != employees
like you cant say shit like he did to a customer LOL
FIP is very uncommon. crazy you lost two to that
yea the kitten really sucks since she was like 9 months old
my wife was super upset
does anyone know of a Zigbee temp/humidity sensor that would survive in a freezer?
The sonoff ones say they handle -10C to +40C which is fine for a fridge, but not freezer
sorry
no biggie
your problem is going to be the battery, not the sensor
looks like the grocer Kroger rolled their own for their freezers
remote temp probe
Modifying a Xiaomi one to use a probe would probably be good
I was considering that before I decided to do esphome multi probe for my 5 freezers
@forest edge I think it sucks that millions of mink were kept for fur, and sucks even more that they got infected. And sucks even more about the kull. We don't need to use actual animal fur.
Those mink "never should have been there"
Damn Danish
Yeah
Good thing that the kolskål pile didn't get covid
The whole country would have starved
I am working in a nursery today
Time to scare all the kids by wearing a mask
Hillarious to see them asking why I have mask, like, "because Tegnell and Löfven want you dead"
@subtle pasture figured out the path stuff.... apparently when you have a running instance of plex, and you migrate to another server on the same network, whenever you go into the "settings" of that said new server (I went to newip) it will show you the settings of the "old" still active server it seems, as soon as I shut down the old server all the settings were "new server path" "new server ip" etc in the interface
which I found quite interesting
Yeah Plex web isn't actually your server
It's just a front end client that can connect to your server
If that makes sense
I'm guessing it just serves you a SPA
So the entire client is running in your browser
So I think you could hit the random server of someone else
And it'd just show you your server
lulz
I have to run a VM with our corporate Windows image
to update my password every 3 months
because there is no web way of doing that
just noticed this in the server controls, "Control your Home Assistant server… from Home Assistant." that's a.. little long lol a simple Restart or Stop Home Assistant (even though the buttons say that) would be ok lol
Yeah, it is even more... sounds like a poorly google translated phishing ad in norwegian
Oh nice, there is a tool for Mac users that I can abuse
🤣
Just ordered 50m of WS2815 strips 😄
50m ? 🤏
The Spelunkys are finally coming to Switch. About time, perfect games for the Switch
That's like A$4000 in Phillips Hue strip prices
I should hit up hax when I finally have the opportunity to do led strips. Make him do all the work and I'll just copy his homework
Hello - I am trying to understand the terminologies w.r.t HA like entity, template, etc.. I read documentation couple of times , as English not being my primary lang could be that is what I am thinking. Can someone be able to guide me some youtube videos? I know the videos will be old but I believe the terminology must not have changed. Thank you!
could you tag me when you respond..
@junior forge Sorry for the highlight, but after watching the HA conference/your YT channel I just love your voice. So pleasing to listen to. When can we expect your voice as TTS? 😄
ASMR Assistant? 😛
Here's a poll for you.
When you get a cold/flu, would you rather not take drugs and feel miserable for a short period of time
Or take the drugs and feel decent but be sick for longer
Some where I heard , for cold if you take medicine it will cure in 7 days ,if not in a week .
I wanna watch his Ytube video for this statement...
wait HA has a podcast ??? thats awesome...
I am on the side of letting the fever and such run it's course
It's there for a reason
funny , I am pretty new to HA
@clear ferry are people in norwatland even capable of getting warm
I heard a snippet only @junior forge , I should agree what @regal elbow has said ..
36 degrees body temp, this man is burning up. Ice stat
I can get pretty high fevers. Must be genetic since my daughter is the same.
You should listen to some episodes @dusk berry, in general they do a great job and some interesting guests
It's probably too cold and dark for viruses
Having 2 seconds of sunlight a winter must help
that's very optimistic of you
I wish Thomas Lovén in Washington would learn his own email address... but I hope his lasik procedure goes well.
Ms Thomas Lovèn thank you
maybe he can see his email better afterwards and gets it right 🤔
At this point I've given up. I've emailed a few addresses that I think may be right, I've talked to his buddies in the Crossings Guard. I even talked to some sherif somewhere who wanted some background on his cousin for an employment (Really, via email?)... It's been going on for years. I even tried to offer to set up theamericanone@thomasloven.com as a forward.
Just cancel things
It's amazing how fast that gets folks to sort their stuff out - speaking from experience
my wife has the same, she has firstnamelastname@gmail.com and some idiot of a woman thinks she has registered firstname.lastname@gmail.com as her email
and keeps using that to sign up for stuff
I get emails for two different folks in the US, and one in Aus. The numbers dropped off after I started cancelling appointments, or responding to things with You do realise that I'm not your client, and you just released sensitive legal/medical information to a strange
To a strange Scottish man
that is implied
you don't need to add that
why is noone sending appointment mails to me
I could rebook them every two weeks
that would be great fun
mmm performance review for 2020 with my boss in 30 minutes, does my hair look good ?
@clear ferry I had one of those last week. lol
One of the funnier moments was when I was informed that someone had complained about my use of profanity in a company meeting. My boss hadn't even noticed I'd swore (because I hadn't actually been offensive in any way), but was still required to bring it to my attention.
Hilarity ensued:
Me: "Ok, fine, so you want to play by Battlestar Galactica rules on this one?"
Him: "You know... I might actually be ok with that"
Me: "So if I told you to go FRACK yourself, that'd be cool?"
Him: "Well... no... hang on a minute"
Me: "Yeah, because it's not the WORD itself you care about, it's not the combination of MOUTH SOUNDS I'm making, it's the INTENT BEHIND IT that you care about it. When I dropped an F-bomb in that meeting, it was NOT used in any way that could even remotely be construed as offensive, and you know that. Whoever complained is the one with the problem here, and they need to learn to lighten the fuck up."
We left it at that
Hey fuck you
lol
fun fact for you @subtle pasture , the part of the country where I'm from we use swearing as adjectives
so when I moved south everybody thought my swearing was cute
Swearing as adjectives?
Redditors ruined swearing for me.
@clear ferry This is a case of us having one highly conservative/religious, mid 60's, upper-middle-class white lady on-staff who loves to complain about literally anything anyone does...
Is there a good reason I can add a sensor in the GUI but have to edit the config file to convert the "access control" into a usable device class?
No support in here
"This was a moth... interesting problem, I wonder I we can use the fooki... new drivers or if that'll be a goddam... shitshow" would be totally normal sentence @deft pewter
You're asking something about HA. Ask it in a support channel.
And she's especially sensitive to curses, even when used in the most positive way possible. For example, I said "America, fuck yeah" in company chat, on the 4th of July, in response to someone's overly-patriotic independence day meme, and she complained...
Start in #general-archived if you're not sure where to ask.
I did nothing wrong there, IMHO. This is a her-problem...
this is another reason why I have never accepted a job offer from the states
wow that was interesting, I stuttered in my little finger and told octoprint to raise the bed temperature to 800 degrees
it didn't even flinch
SIR YES SIR
Heh, my printer firmware would balk at that. I've got Marlin's max bed temperature set way lower than that
Agreed. Some people are just too sensitive or look for fights.
This is also the same lady that got on everyone's shit-list when she basically forced the entire office to go home and change after complaining that a significant number of employees showed up with Pride-themed shirts, on a casual Friday, during Pride month...
The shirts had been cleared with one of the owners of the company before-hand, I'll add.
That's pretty gay
See #zwave-archived or #integrations-archived 😉 (but yes, there is, mostly it's only supported in YAML)
I just want to bitch and moan until the developers fix it.
👀
(the zwave onboarding process)
I already submitted two in the last month
I guess you could say I'm one of the lead devs
Folks normally just whine and bitch.... not actually get involved
Don't kinkshame me
Gotta hit that perfect balance of bitching WHILE submitting a PR
I just can't find the motivation to put effort into implementing my grand plan only for the devs to shoot it down because it doesn't fit their grand plan.
Sounds familiar
I mean, that's why add-ons / HACS exist
addons 🤢
If I had it my way, there'd be no blue and no references to "home"
@clear ferry only using core 🤢
Because knowing how to run stuff is ... hard?
If I use homeassistant at the office it says I'm "home" when I'm at work.
No, my work is my home
Not literally
But the management is getting kind of snarky about me being here at 2AM
Also the example interfaces on the website are dated. There are some cool ones in the forums that I'd rather see in action rather than screenshots.
0 hours here. I don't want the extra pay, I want my personal time to myself 😄
pssh, I'm happy with 115 hours
I'm used to 400-700
🤣
I can do most of my overtime while doing other stuff, even more so with the WFH situation
put 400 servers on update, go down stairs put daughter to bed, go up again afterwards
hey dudes, finally got my RPI3 working and over the moon with my little automations so far!
simple but effective!
Still counts as working. If they only paid us for the time we actually pressed buttons, we wouldn't get paid much at all.
pi 🤢
For now, will upgrade as I go!
Now if only Microsoft would make Teams behave properly with Bluetooth audio devices in linux
that would be great
Got an email from a prospective employer at 8.30pm
But ill wait till tomorrow to reply
Don't want to set a bad precident
Speaking of Linux... I gave up on trying to get the graphics drivers working with Debian. Going with Docker on Ubuntu instead 😂
y'all missing out
Hmmm, apparently there are fixes in ubuntu 20.10 for my bt issues
better do an upgrade
Non-LTS? 🤢
For personal desktop use? Don't really need LTS
hi
Here doggie doggie
Woof
I'll almost exclusively use SSH now that it's set up, so I would have preferred non GUI. Just couldn't get the bloody thing to work with Debian, even when not selecting a DE during setup.
that is pretty strange tbh
does it have DSUB outputs or only HDMI ?
I had some issues on my chinese minicomputer with hdmi
dsub worked fine though
Only HDMI. I considered grabbing an adaptor and plugging it into an old monitor but that felt like too much effort
orly
do you have a hypothesis about Tinkerer?
!seen Tinkerer
.seen Tinkerer
what's up with that, @velvet horizon
I am never seen, just heard 😛
last I checked it was over 3 weeks since you were here
Tinkerer is likely based on same technology as this https://www.sixthtone.com/news/1006531/The AI Girlfriend Seducing China’s Lonely Men/
Hello everyone, I have now installed the HACS on my RPI2 and also linked it to Github. In the HACS menu, however, has been saying "HACS is setting up, during this time some information might be missing or incorrect" for 2 days
See #integrations-archived and the channel topic here 😉
Hey, work with what ya got!
Don't tell him that, he'll spin up the Cray
Not all of us can have an hex-socket octo-core 69.420THz processor supercomputer.
or we choose not to
lol, Nice read for EU boys https://www.statewatch.org/media/1510/eu-council-encryption-declaration-13084-20-rev1.pdf
Microsoft can't make Teams work properly on their own OS. You're awfully optimistic thinking it'll happen on any other 😂
bt works fine in teams on my side. But the bult in does not
also screensharing does not work at all
I've just spent half a day and a couple of braincells trying to figure out why my motion sensor automation wasn't switching the lights off after 10 minutes. Turns out, that part works a lot better when you call turn_off instead of turn_on.
Anyone know of a good place to ask some Shelly questions? I get the basics but have a couple projects I cannot figure out
@rancid wharf probably in #hardware-archived or #general-archived or #diy-archived depending on what you want to do..check the channel topics to see which is more appropriate
i.e. not #the-water-cooler
@turbid karma can't begin to tell you how often that happens hahah
"hey why doesnt this work"....next day oh look it was unplugged 🤦♂️
It's always good debugging practice to check the fundamentals first.
See #general-archived (as mentioned in the channel topic) if you're not sure where to ask
thanks you
We need a bot command for that 😂
There's no support for Home Assistant here - please look at the other channels for that.
No, there isn't actually a bot command for everything
It was tongue in cheek, dale
Lol, I just saw it come in on my notifications and figured I'd respond 😂
Hum i got a big problem i do exacly the same as this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkBcGl7Vq8s&ab_channel=KPeyanski and now i can't connec to my home assistant
Do you want to have a secure remote access to your Home Assistant from everywhere, but you don’t want to setup complicated VPNs or to pay for the cloud service? If yes, then this video is just for you.
Exposing a local server or service to the outside world has always been tricky. Exposing Home Assistant is not hard, but you have to do it the r...
Hang on, I got this!

Or, more seriously, see your install method channel
oups sorry
Nah... I got this!
Videos are great to watch but are usually out of date QUICK.... Best to read the DOCS
Not even a first time offender...
Sorry :(
That's ok, we can GIF them to death
All jokes aside, if you do not know what you are doing when enabling remote access, you should not even attempt to try it untill you actually set yourself into what it actually would do, how it works, and how to best protect your self from common mistakes
so were i can post ? my thing because Installation method chanel i only for installation
No
It never ceases to amaze me how much people get stuck on a word
No matter what those channels are called, people don't believe it when they're told to ask there
@floral pulsar Not sure which install you're using? If you have system_health enabled you can check Configuration -> Info, or see the following.
-
If you're using HassOS, flashed an image, or booted a VM with an image you're using #330990055533576204
-
If you installed Linux and then ran a script to install HA and have add-ons then you have #330944238910963714
-
If you're running
dockercommands or use a Docker manager and have no add-ons then you have #449717345808547842 -
Finally, if you use
pipto install or upgrade you have #551864459891703809
Having difficulty chosing an install method? See this blog post for guidance.
☝️
I have a word for you! ||Ha! Made you look||
||That's not fair||
can we try an experiment and rename this channel to #random or #no_support and create something like a #lobby specifcally designed for "where do i go" or at the very least make #general-archived the very first channel people see after welcome rules?
i feel like the lounge should be moved somewhere that its not easily found near the top
better yet move the lobby section below everythingn else lol
install channels should be the first thing new peopel see
#directions
i mean installing HA is the first thing people do anyways 😛
You would think that
You have probably gotten an issue or 2 in the android repo where someone download the app, but didn have ha setup
@light trout thats most of the 1 star reviews in teh play store
"i installed this app and I cant figure what to do next"
maybe its a good opportunity to put a link to the HA homepage on the first screen 🤔
Maybe list it as a requirement in the app description
we do
Home Assistant for Android requires that you have access to a Home Assistant instance.
Just ask how well #read-this-before-you-post has worked on the HACS discord 😛
touche
I've had people get damned abusive when I point that channel out 😉
I kicked them
I did consider it for a moment, then I just found out all I need is in Plex, Disney+ and Netflix, all norwegian TV is free to watch anyway ⛹️♀️
Same. Minus the shitty Norwegian TV.
do esp32 boards get hot? lol. It's a ttgo beam, waiting on project boxes from china, wondering if a cardboard box will do in the meantime
They get warm, not hot. Cardboard will be fine.
Works better when you have a role-bot that needs to be interacted with before you're granted the role that allows you to see any other channels 😛
ive seen discord servers where a user has to enter the words "accept" into the rules and then tehre is a 2 minute wait period before thigns open up
because if you stop them from immediately asking a quiestion they will look elsewhere
Well.. HACS has that as well...
id love that...users have to ask the bot for #the-water-cooler permissions
until then they dont even see it
didnt we do that for the status stuff?
Correct
Can we do it? Pretty please?
Couple that with no-warning bans for asking in #the-water-cooler after you've confirmed to the bot that you won't ask in #the-water-cooler 🤣
"How do install on my 1999 Windows XP?". I feel like this is the best channel to ask 😂
You can't install it on 1999 windows XP
@last cedar That's the joke 😂
@grand thicket That's some quality shitposting. Absolutely the right channel. lol
Also, 1999?
Windows XP wasn't released until August 24th, 2001.
Windows 2000 was only released December 15th of 1999, so that'd just barely make the cut
Oh, happy birthday Windows 2000. December 15th was yesterday O.o
Windows 2000 is officially old enough to drink (21)
@subtle pasture I'm not sure, I think the computer was built in 98... It may be 88
Shh, we're buying Windows 2000 beer now
It's crazy to think that some of these operating systems are either as old or older then me
inb4 Tinkerer goes on about being able to tell the baud rate from the dial-up tones...
@deft pewter I mean, back with 300 and 600 baud modems were common, you could absolutely hear the difference
I'm not disputing that. Was just getting there before Tinkerer tells us his old man tales.
Logging into a BBS at 300 baud was an experience... literally watching each character draw-in as it's downloaded
Note: I'm only 30, but my dad was a hardcore Commodore fanboy, and kept his Amigas around way past when he should have
When Tinkerer was born, it was so long ago, people didn't even see in colour.
allegedly
Not my fault I pre-date the epoch 😛
Oh, hi Tinkerer!
Hah
❤️
I've just had more years to accumulate random knowledge - most of which seems to be useless, until it's not any more 😄
@clever mortar How does one write your birthday in Unix time? Negative number?
Knowledge is never useless . Unless you forget that you have knowledge
Oh yeah, it's amazing how often that "useless" knowledge comes in handy
I think you'd get an integer overflow in either direction, tbh 😄
I agree with that. When you are the only person that remembers how to do something obscure at work. And you don't even need to look it up.
Obscure things no-one else in a giant office knows how to do? You mean like washing your hands after taking a dump?
@last cedar That's me a lot of the time, in addition to my actual job description
Random ADDS / networking / virtualization / security / exchange / etc. problem? Seems to eventually get shot my way 😛
We finally hired another engineer who can competently use Linux, so at least that load gets shared now...
Anyone can sudo apt-get update though 😂
25 people on staff, and they all just do Windows server... it's wild...
(joking, I am an absolute moron when it comes to linux)
That said, 99% of the servers we manage are Windows servers, so...
It sounds like that is a good thing tbh, and you sound incredibly valuable for them
Job security++
I am hoping to take 3 big certs soon before next pay discussion and be able to squeeze them a bit. Will make buying a house easier.
Yes, exactly
I feel the same way tbh, not last person in, and can do 90-100% of all the systems apart from maybe 2, that we have other people do for us.
Hi Bob
Hey there, I´m new to HA and new to Discord. For now i´m just looking for recommendations for beginners tutorials. Prefer preferably Videos?
Is he your uncle?
Videos are great to watch but are usually out of date QUICK.... Best to read the DOCS
Start at https://www.home-assistant.io/getting-started/ and move to https://www.home-assistant.io/docs/ next 😉
Bob might be his aunt, don't be like that 🤕
Would appreciate some Video tutorials. Easier – ADD you know 😄
I managed to install Hassio on a rpi 4. For now all my Devices work flawless. ZHA with CC2652 45 Devices, Hue Bridge 33 Devices, Ikea Bridge 9 Devices, Yeelight 2 Devices, Google Cast 3 Devices, a printer etc. Created some basic Automations and Scenes in UI. But that’s all I can do. Complete noob. So some Basic Tut to follow threw and learn would be nice.
There's a load of them out there, DrZzs Discord has a lot of links to them, but ... we know from bitter experience that they're outdated fast, and cause confusion as a result
You're talking about a platform that has a new release every three weeks.... things move fast 😉
not anymore..
I noticed got zha map installed last week now its in the release. Waste of time …
True, it's gone from fortnightly, to three weekly, to monthly
Oh. My. Does that mean it's grinding to a halt 😱
might mean less discord questions about bugs.. think positive not negative!
It's ok, Blue will offset that by introducing a new wave of users who bought it pre-installed, then broke it 😛
i dunno, it don't have have wifi
True, there'll be a wave of users asking how to connect it to WiFi 🤣
my wifi don't work!
Have you tried turning it on and then off again?
Got it no Vids ☹ Ok so basically, I should google each individual topic and read on it? For now my questions seem so broad and simple. Like: How to group lights; How to disable and enable specific automations if others are triggered; which editor to use; YMAL Basics; lovelace basics etc.
See the relevant channels 😉
#automations-archived , #frontend-archived for Lovelace, #general-archived for YAML, #integrations-archived for groups/lights/etc
We can help you
(probably)
HACS keeps trying to tell me to remove the calendar card but I keep giving it the finger.. I'm a rebel!
ok thx i´ll be off reading the doc.
(grouping lights - light.group, disable/enable automations - many ways, editor - vim)
And that 😉
dem packages doe
I hope ur right
It's a bit... basic
This is why I bought a 3d printer
So I can print dildo molds according to @deft pewter
According to me? You're the one that asked me to create the mold.
I'm happy with my non-Debian journey so far, atx. Trying my hand at docker-compose for the first time ever. It's going well.
Bye, bye, add-ons 😄
HA, z2m, MariaDB, Mosquitto and AppDaemon all running fine together. Tomorrow's task will be to start migrating config.
Is anyone else having issues with community.home-assistant.io?
Somebody was having issues with the main site
