So not a hub really

#

Depends on your definition of a hub

serene mortar
#

@tidal bronze You are tempting me

#

also, is your synology_dsm integration is working? mine broke in 2020.12.0

celest oasis
#

i am trying to move away from xiaomi gateway and i read that with raspberry pi + zigbee adapter i am able to do so

#

i am heavily invested in aqara switches and yeelight ceilings

orchid rose
#

Oh wait the 130€ for ODrdoid is without eMMC so it would be easily 200€ fully setup in Europe

night zodiac
#

I'll install DSM 7, lol. I don't even use my NAS really these days

serene mortar
#

I just updated one drive on my NAS - a schucked 18tb

night zodiac
#

arsaboo, my DSM integration works but I haven't updated to 2020.12.0 yet

serene mortar
#

it was working for me in the beta

#

not working now 😦

deft pewter
#

I'd say you guys convinced me to buy a NUC but I was actually tabbed out for that entire discussion while I bought an NUC.

floral pulsar
#

for the script help i need to go in integration ? or automations ?

deft pewter
#

Glad I didn't tab back in to see you talking me out of it 🤣

orchid rose
#

which NUC did you decide on?

deft pewter
#

I went for this one. Good amount of RAM and storage, seemed a decent price. Even other machines by the same brand are more expensive for less storage, so I think they made a mistake with the pricing 😄 https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08PL895D3

#

£169 for a Celeron J4125, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD. 10W TDP... way better than the 240W workstation I'm using now.

orchid rose
#

oh damn that's really slim

deft pewter
#

Yeah, the dimensions are awesome. I'll just sit it on top of my main PC tower until I find a better home

serene mortar
#

weird....I cannot even delete the integration

orchid rose
#

does it have a fan mono?

tidal bronze
deft pewter
#

No fan but I don't think I'll ever work it hard enough to care.

#

Think I'll go Buster + supervised, but only so I have a bit of flexibility over the OS.

clear ferry
#

@deft pewter that'll take you far

#

Just do KVM tbh

#

And run VM if you want add-ons 🤢

deft pewter
#

Why KVM?

Me: "This Aruba switch you picked doesn't support 10gbps at all, and it requires an additional module for stacking. Shouldn't we try to future-proof a little?"
Coworker: "Well, this switch is already $1200, and the one with 10gbps and stacking built-in is nearly $10,000"
Me: Pulls up a 48 port Cisco switch for $700 with the same switching capacity, built-in stacking, and two 10gbps ports

#

HPE/Aruba price-gouging worse than Cisco. Never thought I'd see the day...

tribal whale
orchid rose
#

fanless nuc sounds pretty great. I'll try to remember the beelink next time I need a small PC

clear ferry
tribal whale
#

They are decent for internet browser /email machines. Underpowered for much else.

clear ferry
#

@subtle pasture curious about the actual model numbers there ;-)

tribal whale
#

So.. Great for grandma!

subtle pasture
#

@clear ferry JL321A ARUBA 2930M 48G vs. Cisco SG350X-48

#

$1250 vs. $700, but the Cisco switch supports stacking (no additional module required) and has two SFP+ ports for 10gbps connectivity (the Aruba switch has no 10gbps capable ports). They both have the same 176 gbps switching capacity, and they both support basic L3 operation.

deft pewter
clear ferry
#

Because supervised install is.... Fickle, not for the faint of heart and a shitshow in the end ;-)

#

@subtle pasture looks pretty similar, is the "Linksys" full layer 3 too? And does it scale to 10 per stack? 🤣

subtle pasture
#

@clear ferry Not a Linksys switch... the 350x came out well after Cisco sold Linksys 😕

clear ferry
#

Psssh, it's Linksys DNA rubber_duck

#

SG will always be for me 🤣

subtle pasture
#

Not really. I've used Cisco-Linksys switches, and they don't run the same OS as these SG series switches at all

#

Configs aren't cross-compatible, either

clear ferry
#

Is it iOS?

#

Or is it something else entirely?

subtle pasture
#

It's not iOS, though the command and config structure mimics iOS

#

iOS is limited to Catalyst switches

clear ferry
#

Like most switch os`

#

Except the French shitshow which is colibris

subtle pasture
#

But, anyway... I can find no reason for the Aruba to be so much more expensive, given the specs, performance, and warranty

clear ferry
#

Poor reseller discounting probably

#

Cisco is always more aggressive

#

First needle free etc

subtle pasture
#

What really blows my mind is the price-jump on the Aruba side to get some 10gbps ports

#

That goes from "unreasonable" to "you're fucking kidding me, right?"

clear ferry
#

I had Cisco undercut us on a customer once, like, 50% cheaper, but when the customer wanted to add 4blades to their ucs it was cheaper to buy a whole enclosure plus 4 servers from us, and they still had enough money to buy two more servers from us

subtle pasture
#

Like, I'm sure the $10,000 Aruba switch does more than the SG350X, but we don't actually... need that... we just need stacking and a couple 10gbps ports

clear ferry
deft pewter
clear ferry
#

Yes

deft pewter
#

Hmm, that sounds tempting. Either way, I just start with Debian as the base, right? It's just the next steps that differ?

clear ferry

#

inner vault
clear ferry
#

Lulz

subtle pasture
#

@inner vault Nope, SG series switches include the licensing built in... that's part of the "Small Business" package. Only Catalyst series need additional licensing.

clear ferry
#

I still remember Cisco Nexus 6000, $1000 per port you want to activate, comes with 8 ports enabled

subtle pasture
#

Cisco doesn't even hide the firmware updates for SG series switches behind a login or paywall, they're just there...

inner vault
#

huh wild

subtle pasture
#

@clear ferry As for the sick face on the Rocky Linux link... at least this is back to being an independent free-ified version of RHEL

#

Unlike the now-defunct CentOS, which was taken over by IBM

#

Original CentOS founder started the project, as well. Dude came out of nowhere and picked up the mantle.

clear ferry
#

Eh, most centos shops I've talked to (with a couple of thousand centos bare metal nodes) are just considering moving to something else because rhel are see ju enn tees

#

We'll see

#

Not sure what their best options are, mostly HPC environments

subtle pasture
#

I mean, anyone running CentOS right now basically has to consider moving... they're shuttering everything except CentOS Stream, which is the rolling pre-release version

clear ferry
#

Yup

subtle pasture
#

Rocky will be the closest to a drop-in replacement

clear ferry

I know of the environments ran rocks, which used to be popular in hpc

night zodiac

yee, ours look weird because we choose 120/240 at the breaker panel

every row alternates between -120 and +120. we use the single breakers to get 120 between one of those poles and the neutral. we use a double breaker to get the 240 between the -120 and +120

#

a device can also use 120 and 240 easy so it can use 240 for the beefy things inside of the device and 120 for rest.

@obsidian ibex That's more of a Pi issue than a HA issue. UBoot only supports so many adapters

Not sure which install you're using? If you have system_health enabled you can check Configuration -> Info, or see the following.

  • If you're using HassOS, flashed an image, or booted a VM with an image you're using #330990055533576204

  • If you installed Linux and then ran a script to install HA and have add-ons then you have #330944238910963714

  • If you're running docker commands or use a Docker manager and have no add-ons then you have #449717345808547842

  • Finally, if you use pip to install or upgrade you have #551864459891703809

where in the world

#

does plex store path information about stuff

#

ex: boost::filesystem::last_write_time: No such file or directory lot of errors in the logs referring to my jail directory structure, that I cannot find anywhere in the plex config settings 🤔

subtle pasture
#

I believe all media paths are stored in com.plexapp.library.db

#

It's a SQLite database

clear ferry
#

is that the viewed status database ?

subtle pasture
#

Probably, but I don't know that for 100% sure

#

Might just have to open it and take a look 🤷‍♀️

clear ferry
#

I see a lot of stuff in there

#

but nothing about hardcoded paths

#

Warning: ex: boost::filesystem::last_write_time: No such file or directory: "/usr/local/share/plexmediaserver/Resources/Plug-ins-a78fef9a9", couldn't check file: "/usr/local/share/plexmediaserver/Resources/Plug-ins-a78fef9a9" def something hanging around from my jail

atx - I'll come back to this later after my next meeting, but do you know why a fresh install of Debian would just show 'static' post-installation? Setup menu was all visible but I can't see anything when I boot normally. HDCP maybe? What do I do? 😄

clear ferry

Can you login via SSH?

deft pewter
#

Haven't tried yet. I was hoping there was a graphic-less way to log in while I still have this hooked up to a monitor.

clear ferry

Probably an acpi or other kernel value

#

I've seen a lot of stuff like that in laptops over the years

#

It turns to static after the X environment is up?

deft pewter
#

Yeah. I see the bootloader, then I see static.

#

Looks like port 22 is closed 😂

deft pewter

Beelink Gemini M. The NUC I bought last night.

clear ferry

Intel UHD600 should be fine 🤔

deft pewter
#

There was a warning during installation about non-free software needed for some hardware. I didn't know what to do, so skipped that... But that's why I think it's HDCP.

deft pewter

Running through the installer again, the hardware warning is about the WiFi adaptor. I'll ignore it again 😂

@deft pewter desktop environment for a server is eeeeeeeh anyway

deft pewter

Yeah, I'm going to try without a DE this time. Got closer on the third attempt... It hung when trying to get the non-free firmware. I'll disallow non-free this time.

clever mortar
unkempt osprey
#

OK thanks, I'll stick with HA then.

forest edge
#

if they had released HA blue before the rpi4 got usb boot support I may have even bought it and I am a cheap bastard lol

subtle pasture
#

@forest edge I keep going back and forth on if HA Blue is a worthwhile purchase vs. buying a used NUC off ebay

clever mortar
#

Or an old/second hand laptop 😉

#

Those come with a built in UPS

light trout
#

At least for a while

subtle pasture
#

Usually time to replace the battery in a 2nd hand one 😛

#

Old thin clients are cheap AF, as well

forest edge
#

@subtle pasture would depend what your future plans for it are. if you don't plan to do much more than what you currently using it for on a rpi then I would say yes it's worth it.. considering the components that come with it's actually cheaper than buying them separate.

subtle pasture
#

Eh? I'm looking at a $125 NUC right now with a faster processor, double the RAM, and double the SSD capacity...

#

How's the Blue worth it?

#

That's the wall I keep running into. lol

forest edge
#

talking about the N2+ retail along with the eemc and case etc retail costs vs the Blue's cost

subtle pasture
#

Right, it's a deal compared to buying the same components separately... but there are cheaper x86 options with way more power

forest edge
#

but then those other options use more power etc

#

it all falls down to effiency and what you plan to do with it

#

why put HA on a nuc if you are not going to utilize the extra ram etc

subtle pasture
#

Mostly because it'd be cheaper to do it that way than buying Blue 😛

forest edge
#

well thats custom vs not

subtle pasture
#

Cheaper than some Pi4 setups, as well

forest edge
#

the blue is cheaper than some rpi4 setups lol

subtle pasture
#

All you really win on with the ARM-based systems is power consumption

#

1.8w at idle on the N2+ vs. 8w at idle on the NUC

forest edge
#

I see it as a waste of a perfectlky good nuc in my setup

#

cause i wouldn't utilize what the nuc would be capable of

#

course that depend son the nuc too

#

the nuc your looking at could be a turd lol

subtle pasture
#

We're talking a dual core (2c 4t) i3 NUC. it's not that fast (though it is faster than the ARM CPU in a N2+)

#

NUC DC53427HYE, to be specific

light trout
#

NUC is a useless middle ground, not powerful enough to be the only server, and too powerful for single application use

subtle pasture
#

I feel that way about the Pi4, honestly. Just running HA seems like a waste

forest edge
#

if you had a few cameras it would fit the bill perfectly

light trout
#

If you are just using the core, then yes that is massively overkill

forest edge
#

i run a discord bot, cameras and a few other things on mine. cpu averages around 50% when i'm not looking at it lol

subtle pasture
#

That said, I'd almost choose the NUC just because it's A) cheap... really, really cheap for the hardware you get, and B) an all-in-one package (like HA Blue)

#

If I needed more power than a Pi provides, that is

forest edge
#

depends on what you plans to do. again back to cameras.. the rpi is much better at encode/decode than that nuc's onboard chip

#

was that nuc even ddr4? saw it was discontinued back in 2010 or something

clear ferry
#

@subtle pasture atleast the blue is reasonably priced where you are, $230 in Sweden and $365 in Denmark 🤣

summer hazel
#

I just had an idea that I think is probably going to be too much effort in practice to be worth it, but I have these ikea on/off switches and a lot of devices I'd like to control with them... I'm going to look into how much of a pain it'd be to have RFID tags near devices, and then scanning one with your phone would change the on/off switch assigned to you to control that device. So as you move around and spend time in different areas of the house you can change which device is being controlled by that switch, and carry the switch around with you instead of having to have a switch for every device that I think someone might want to control physically. Maybe the switch itself could have a tag on it that you read to register it to your phone so you become the controller of that switch.

Is this a crazy idea? Have I lost my mind?

deft pewter
#

You may not have lost your mind but you've lost your way.

#

HA stuff goes in other channels.

#

But for what it's worth... I carry a multi-switch with me at all times. My phone.

#

No need to scan anything when I move to a new room smart

forest edge
#

voice control would actually work better in that scneario

#

than rfid tags and carrying a switch

#

part of me is happy that the magic home integration is pushing forward considering the existing flux led integration really only turns the bulbs on and off with very little control of anything else. many people will be thankful for it but the fact that it's cloud polling is absolutely gross 🤢

summer hazel

hmm, yeah good points all around.

@subtle pasture figured out the path stuff.... apparently when you have a running instance of plex, and you migrate to another server on the same network, whenever you go into the "settings" of that said new server (I went to newip) it will show you the settings of the "old" still active server it seems, as soon as I shut down the old server all the settings were "new server path" "new server ip" etc in the interface

which I found quite interesting

One of the funnier moments was when I was informed that someone had complained about my use of profanity in a company meeting. My boss hadn't even noticed I'd swore (because I hadn't actually been offensive in any way), but was still required to bring it to my attention.
Hilarity ensued:

Me: "Ok, fine, so you want to play by Battlestar Galactica rules on this one?"
Him: "You know... I might actually be ok with that"
Me: "So if I told you to go FRACK yourself, that'd be cool?"
Him: "Well... no... hang on a minute"
Me: "Yeah, because it's not the WORD itself you care about, it's not the combination of MOUTH SOUNDS I'm making, it's the INTENT BEHIND IT that you care about it. When I dropped an F-bomb in that meeting, it was NOT used in any way that could even remotely be construed as offensive, and you know that. Whoever complained is the one with the problem here, and they need to learn to lighten the fuck up."

@floral pulsar Not sure which install you're using? If you have system_health enabled you can check Configuration -> Info, or see the following.

  • If you're using HassOS, flashed an image, or booted a VM with an image you're using #330990055533576204

  • If you installed Linux and then ran a script to install HA and have add-ons then you have #330944238910963714

  • If you're running docker commands or use a Docker manager and have no add-ons then you have #449717345808547842

  • Finally, if you use pip to install or upgrade you have #551864459891703809

Having difficulty chosing an install method? See this blog post for guidance.

I managed to install Hassio on a rpi 4. For now all my Devices work flawless. ZHA with CC2652 45 Devices, Hue Bridge 33 Devices, Ikea Bridge 9 Devices, Yeelight 2 Devices, Google Cast 3 Devices, a printer etc. Created some basic Automations and Scenes in UI. But that’s all I can do. Complete noob. So some Basic Tut to follow threw and learn would be nice.

clever mortar

There's a load of them out there, DrZzs Discord has a lot of links to them, but ... we know from bitter experience that they're outdated fast, and cause confusion as a result

Got it no Vids ☹ Ok so basically, I should google each individual topic and read on it? For now my questions seem so broad and simple. Like: How to group lights; How to disable and enable specific automations if others are triggered; which editor to use; YMAL Basics; lovelace basics etc.

See the relevant channels 😉

We can help you
