subtle pasture

Heh, I bought a lifetime pass when $70 was full price

#

I literally moved from Windows Media Center to Plex somewhere around 2008. lol

#

I think I ran them both in parallel until about 2013, when WMC was officially dead

night zodiac
#

I still have an Xbox original with XBMC on it

odd kindle
#

Spent the last 30 minutes hand coding an svg logo and then optimizing it down byte for byte. This can't be a healthy behaviour, I'm starting to question my sanity

#

I got the lifetime pass like 6 yeasr ago. Such a good purchase. Plex have been really good imho

subtle pasture
#

The big reason we kept WMC around for so long was because of the TV Tuner / cablecard support

#

Plex didn't add DVR capabilities until much, much later... and it still doesn't support CableCard, you need a 3rd party solution for that

odd kindle
#

I ran WMC for a while as well, but I didn't trust it so I ended up having all content on two systems and realize that was just stupid

subtle pasture
#

There are people who still keep a Windows 8.1 box around, with the last version of WMC installed, loaded with TV tuners, because there's no better option

odd kindle
#

What's the purpose for it? To record tv?

subtle pasture
#

Usually as a centralization point for live TV and TV recordings (+ timeshifting and DVR capabilities)

#

So instead of having 6 cable boxes around the house, they'll have a PC with three dual tuners installed

night zodiac
#

back in the day we used 'em for DVRs

odd kindle
#

I see. I haven't had a need to record tv for the past 8 years at least. Our set up boxes have a feature where you can replay old episodes of anything I would ever want to watch later.

subtle pasture
#

You can't actually do that with Plex if you need CableCard support to descramble the channels, only Windows Media Center can do that

night zodiac
#

yeah, we used windows media center back in the day I am pretty sure

subtle pasture
#

Microsoft actually worked out contracts with cable companies to make that happen

night zodiac
#

somewhere around the time windows ME was released, lol

odd kindle
#

We also just have tv via fiber, there's no descrabling that we can do without the set up box 😦

night zodiac
#

we used to use IR to automate channel changes, lol

#

and record based on schedules

#

all types of different points of my life

subtle pasture
#

Windows Media Center actually handles that as well. You can connect the video-out of a cable box to a video capture device on the PC, and WMC will use an IR Blaster to change the channel on the set-top-box

#

It was a seriously robust DVR solution (it kind of had to be, it was competing with TiVo)

night zodiac
#

oh, we had TiVo too at one point, lol

subtle pasture
#

WMC was TiVo on steroids. lol

odd kindle
#

Anyways... I'm gonna jump into a call with a psychologist and talk about what would make me hand code and optimize svgs. I'm sure there's a decent enough reason.

night zodiac
#

eventually my father became one of the largest satellite box distributors for NA

#

we had the most wild setups

#

we had so many satellites on our roof

#

we had test setups too for like the satellites on motors. You would change channel and according to what satellite it was on, the motor would move and point to that satellite

#

echostar was the name of the satellites we would mainly hit, lol

#

I used to be pretty good at hitting it during setups

#

looks like dish networks relationship with echostar is a bit different now days

#

EchoStar Corporation is an American company, a worldwide provider of satellite communication and Internet services through its Hughes Network Systems and EchoStar Satellite Services business segments.
Prior to 2008, it operated the DISH Network service brand, which was spun off as DISH on January 1, 2008.

subtle pasture
#

I remember before Plex's built-in DVR was a thing, we'd have WMC dump recordings into Plex's library. lol

#

Couldn't watch live TV with Plex, but you'd get the recordings as soon as the show finished

night zodiac
#

I was huge into Xbox modding

#

so I had XBMC and it was super fucking ideal

#

XBMC4Xbox is a free and open source media player software made solely for the first-generation Xbox video-game console. The software was forked from the XBMC project (now known as Kodi and formerly known as Xbox Media Player) after XBMC removed support for the Xbox console. Other than the audio / video playback and media center functionality, XB...

subtle pasture
#

Yeaaah, we had 3 OG Xbox's that were used exclusively for XBMC

night zodiac
#

hell yeah

#

I still have mine

subtle pasture
#

It was, unfortunately, never stable enough to pass the WAF test

night zodiac
#

I need to put some new capacitors in it if they haven't leaked everywhere yet

subtle pasture
#

It was also a HUGE bitch to keep all the media scraped, because XBMC has no real centralization

night zodiac
#

yeah, adding RAM to the xbox was a pain and I only saw it done by like one person

#

literally soldered RAM into the mobo

subtle pasture
#

So you had these old Pentium 3 systems scraping metadata for 10 TB of content for hours, and hours

night zodiac
#

yeah, it was back in the day for sure. haha

subtle pasture
#

And each one had to redo it... and god forbid something scanned wrong on one, because you had to manually fix it on all of them

#

XBMC really felt like it fell apart as soon as there was more than one system running it

night zodiac
#

I mean Kodi still seems to be pretty popular

#

I've never used it under that name myself

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, I have the same issue with it, because it hasn't changed structurally πŸ˜›

night zodiac
#

but so many non tech savvy people have told me to use it, lol

subtle pasture
#

Except now, a decade later, there are backend servers you can use to access media via Kodi

#

Plex, Jellyfin, Emby, etc.

#

At which point, Kodi is just a glorified media player

night zodiac
#

yep. Plex took over for me quickly back in the day.

#

"back in the day"

#

= I have no idea what year

subtle pasture
#

I only have some idea because I know WMC's timeline

peak cloud
#

Hey @subtle pasture, you like stats right? πŸ™‚

subtle pasture
#

WMC had a good run. Launched in 2003, last version was released in 2013

night zodiac
#

I just remember using our prebuilt PC that came with windows ME

#

and we swapped that very fast

#

RIP windows ME

subtle pasture
#

Yeaaaah, ME wasn't a terribly great product

night zodiac
#

we had constant driver issues

#

with a prebuilt

subtle pasture
#

Oh, from a technical standpoint? The biggest issue is they shipped it with Internet Explorer 5.5 Beta 3

#

And the shell used web integration

#

So beta IE 5.5 libraries were loaded as part of Explorer...

#

As soon as you update the OS to a stable version of IE, it's about as stable as Win98 SE

#

But ME has the advantage of having Windows 2000's network stack ported over, so it can actually STILL function to some degree on a modern Windows network, where as 98 SE can't

#

So if you need a Windows 9x environment with networking, ME is your baby, oddly enough. It turns up in weird places because of that...

peak cloud
subtle pasture
#

Interesting, though this can't tell the difference between restarting the HA container, and restarting the entire OS

#

Except that one scenario will take inordinately longer than the other

peak cloud
#

True. It doesn't distinguish between the two, unfortunately.

subtle pasture
#

You might be able to add that functionality. I believe HA has an optional sensor you can enable that reports boot time vs. container start time.

peak cloud
#

...please, enlighten me.

subtle pasture
#
  - platform: systemmonitor

stable flint

peak cloud

Twinkly integration is coming in 0.119.0! I am so excited!

stable flint
#

i wonder if i should just buy a twinkly instead..

#

i was counting the number of strings i would need which came out to about 130, and you could buy a tree for that

subtle pasture
#

Ok, I must have missed something. What's Twinkly? πŸ‘€

stable flint
#

leds designed for christmas trees

#

the app lets you customize the led's in an order of a christmas tree, not in a single line

#

so you can have layers of color for example

peak cloud
#

Do you have 22 minutes free to watch a video?

stable flint

peak cloud
deft pewter

Twinkly is an overpriced, newbie-friendly version of WS2812B projects.

Heh, how does it map the lights once a human randomly spews them all over a tree?

peak cloud

WS2812B are 5V bruh.

clever mortar

But it comes with an app so you can "draw" the patterns you want πŸ˜‰

deft pewter
#

What's wrong with 5v?

clever mortar
#

So, advanced and also newbie friendly πŸ˜›

peak cloud
#

Distance.

#

You have to inject power more often when running 5V strips.

deft pewter
#

So... just inject power

#

There's 5050 too, right? 12V?

stable flint
#

but noob friendly

peak cloud
#

5050 is the LED size.

deft pewter
#

No shortage of addressable LEDs.

peak cloud
#

WS2811 and WS2815 come in 12V

stable flint
#

2811 comes in 5v? i thought it was 12v only

peak cloud
#

Twinkly are worth the money, in my opinion. But then again, I also think Hue is worth the money. "It just works."

#

WS2811 comes in 5V and 12V.

deft pewter
#

But where's the fun in 'it just works'? Tinkering is half the fun.

subtle pasture
#

@peak cloud Strictly speaking, it's possible to design a 5v strip that will work at-distance, but it'll be more expensive because it will need an integrated buck/boost converter every so many feet

#

Also, the amp draw would get a bit nutty at 5v...

peak cloud
#

WS2812/WS2812B comes in 5V. WS2813 comes in 5V, but has a redundant data line. WS2815 is the 12V version of WS2813.

deft pewter
#

Just use heavy gauge wiring πŸ˜„

peak cloud
#

For what it's worth, I had a 5V WS2812B strip with 144 LEDs/m, and it faded quite a bit toward the last 15% of the strip. And that was using a hefty PSU.

#

But yeah, I tried the DIY route previously. Even designed a PCB to manage 4 channels of WLED boards.

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, poorly designed strip. Could have probably done with current limiting resistors (slowly decreasing in value down the strip) to maintain even brightness

peak cloud
#

It corroded before summer came. 😦

#

It was an Adafruit strip if that tells you anything.

deft pewter
#

If the length of the strips is the problem, why not run multiple shorter lengths instead? I'm not saying I don't see the appeal in Twinkly, I'd just rather find my own solution.

stable flint
#

will the new integration be local or cloud polling?

peak cloud
#

When it comes to Christmas lights, it's difficult/cumbersome to inject power on most homes.

#

Which also means it's not easy to send power to multiple strips.

#

Sure, an extension cord run alongside the lights would help.

deft pewter
#

I'm probably thinking smaller than you guys. I'd only care about a smaller tree inside my house, not all the billions of lights some Americans have πŸ˜„

The phrase "Bye, Felicia" was first used in a scene in the Australian road comedy film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994), a film about two drag queens that is well-known in the gay community. A year later, it was used again in the American comedy film Friday (1995) (actually spelled "Felisha" in the cast listing)

IMO life is more fun when you manage to steadily acquire random knowledge

subtle pasture

You ever blurt something out, and then go "wait, brain, where the fuck were you storing THAT all these years?"

clever mortar
#

I do that at work too, where I help people solve problems by providing key details that I don't remember learning...

subtle pasture
#

Oh yeah, it's great when it happens at work. One of my favorite instances was when I got pulled over to help another engineer because he couldn't get logged into an ESXi host. It wouldn't accept the password he'd just set (and manually reset)
"What version of ESXi is this? ...oh, type the password and DO NOT hit the enter key. Click the login button next to the password field instead"

#

Logs right in

#

"How the FUCK did you know that?"

#

That particular version of ESXi had a bug with the password entry field. If you hit enter, it would parse the carriage return as part of the password, which would always fail

Given the Supervisor is a Docker container... shouldn't matter

subtle pasture

Hoooo boy, yes it does

Upgrade a container too far without upgrading the docker host, and the containers will stop working. I ran into that earlier this year when I rebuilt my primary Docker host

clever mortar

As I said shouldn't πŸ˜„

I've also ran into weirdness like that

The containers started requiring features of Docker that were not available on the latest release of Docker for CentOS7, so when Watchtower updated all of my containers... poof, dead.

clever mortar
#

See, that's your problem... watchtower

It was either "wait for Docker to be updated in the CentOS7 repos" or "Move to CentOS8"

So I rebuilt the entire VM on CentOS8

Watchtower just updates docker containers...

subtle pasture

But, anyway, yeah... host updates before docker container updates, every time, for sure...

#

Or configure WatchTower to install updates on a 1+ month delay, I suppose πŸ€”

Gotta love when everyone starts using bleeding edge features before they've even been rolled out for popular distros

SmartThings Community

Beginning tomorrow, Dec 1, 2020, SmartThings will start shutting down the APIs and backend systems that support the Classic app. After tomorrow, users who have not migrated to the new app yet will experience significant disruptions. To ensure a predictable impact to users who have not migrated to our new app, SmartThings will take the following ...

#

I'd really hate to be on a long vacation and missed that announcement.. They just deleted peoples routines

#

LOL

#

There is no way I'd ever trust something running cloud that I do not have a monthly subscription for. Even then it better be able to run locally

barren hound
cedar herald
barren hound
#

Logitech bricking remotes, or Nest killing their API is usually on a very expensive product that you bought expecting to work for a while.

cedar herald
#

I tried to list all the hub software I could think of to try and be fair

barren hound
#

a beta project that only really has issues if you upgrade is widely different

#

you're not required to upgrade HA or any of the other OSS packages

tropic hedge
#

I have a lot of stuff running that's just different random dudes on github. That always makes me a bit uneasy

stable flint
#

lol that is my mom's reaction to who works on ha

barren hound
cedar herald
#

Yeah but when you have to upgrade because some service shut down or locked you out, and then that broke you is what I should have mentioned

#

I could clarify that

barren hound
#

if you were running a local product (ESPhome, zwave, zigbee, etc), you could stay on the same firmware and HA version for decades.

cedar herald
#

that's not entirely true

tropic hedge
#

it's a pick-your-poison thing, I pick random dude on github over random company that might not exist in a year

cedar herald
#

some products have dual functionality and talk to the cloud and will update the zwave firmware too

#

the august locks did that to me

tropic hedge
#

but there are some things, like Frigate, that you just can't get in a commercial product

cedar herald
#

were offline for 3 months and I have 2 of my 5 locks off line (wifi) right now

barren hound
#

uh, august is wifi

stable flint
barren hound
#

i said local products, you listed a cloud product

tropic hedge
#

I don't do cloud stuff when I can at all avoid it

stable flint
#

at least git allows you to see the code

cedar herald
#

august gen 3 is wifi + zwave

barren hound
#

that's an edge case and a cloud product, that's a false equivalence

cedar herald
#

just pointing out a product is only local if it has no access to an app on the phone or network outside of a protocol like zwave.. Even then it's not safe. They are starting to rollout zwave ota updates in some hubs and I know smartthings has had that for a long while and it has caused issues with devices bricking / removing functionality.

barren hound
#

excellent example. OTA is a hub specific thing. OZW doesn't support it right now. If you were to get a full setup (pi, zstick, some normal devices), configure it, and put it in a time capsule. it would work 5 years from now.

cedar herald
#

I'd bet by the end of next year open zwave might have ota

barren hound
#

you only need to update HA when you want new functionality or one of those cloud providers you cite breaks functionality

#

and OZW wouldn't force you to use OTA, it would expose the API and let you chose to use it or not.

#

that's kind of the point of OZW

#

another thing most of those other products/services listed don't have is a way to roll back. once a vendor pushes something new, that's what you get from now on, in 99% of cases.

#

i could roll all the way back to my .37 config if i wanted to scrounge ebay for the old devices i used to run (gen 1 zwave, x10, etc).

#

now, do you want to talk about legitimate gripes about HA? go for it. It has plenty of broken edges. Put in the bug reports, help polish that roughness.

night zodiac
#

I want to talk about birds.

The deprecating of a major install method deserves to be called out but so does breaking changes with the note of you update at your own pace and it's not 1.0 yet and should be expected to an extent

blazing parrot
# barren hound Logitech bricking remotes, or Nest killing their API is usually on a very expens...

I bought a house this year with Nest thermostats installed. When my automations come around to climate, I'm going to be looking around at current Z-wave & Zigbee options in the US market. Ecobee is still accessible (I think?) but for how long? I have to imagine they will try to start charging for API access and end up like so many others who can't make enough just from selling widgets... they have to start holding our widgets hostage to stay afloat.

night zodiac
#

it's $5 to use the official API or you can use badnest which has worked well for me

#

I use both

#

I use badnest for temperature sensors and normal nest integration for everything else

barren hound
#

i went with ecobee, but i also know that they might break the integration, and i'll put them on ebay at that point.

night zodiac
#

I would suggest ecobee, myself. My family does HVAC and they love 'em.

#

I also think their dashboards are sexy in comparison to Nests

forest edge
#

both are such a rip off imo

#

well nest wasn't

barren hound
#

i like their thermostats look (square vs round)

blazing parrot
#

yeah I did have ecobee in my previous house and it did play well with HA. But at that point I was still kind of oblivious to the dangers of depending on cloud-based services.

barren hound
# forest edge both are such a rip off imo

i only spent $75/ea on my ecobees. i figure they can spy on my heating habits and try to sell me filters, and i'll take advantage of their people handling the "follow me" function of their sensors. since that will help ensure a happy spouse.

#

climate/comfort is a big deal in that arena

blazing parrot
#

LMAO when they came out with a smart switch that detected room occupancy & temperature, but made it completely incompatible with their thermostats.

barren hound
#

i cannot believe how fucking stupid that is.
