Holy crap! I just found a $20k couch for only $60!! I need to get off my butt and go pick it up RIGHT NOW!!

I wanted to reverse engineer it, but never got around to it. Well, now Iβm obsessed with a much better product and itβs already been reverse engineered! Twinkly Christmas lights!!!
Umm, no. Last year was WLED+WS2811 stings. π
shit that's expensive
Expensive, but worth the pizza dough.
two fiddy
My old DIY setup failed after a few months due to corrosion.
Two fiddy for like the most expensive string. The most expensive tree is $116,000...
Yes, $116k Christmas trees do exist apparently π
Eh, I bought the 250 twinkly for $60 ish last year, the 150 one was $40 this year on black Friday
But I'll try to get up the remaining 700 ws2811 on friday
not much cheaper from the big rock candy mountain
I bought the ws2811 last 11.11 around 900 of them for $60 or something
That'll cover most of my house facade
I learned about Twinkly last year but only the trees, not the strings. π¦ Otherwise I would have jumped on them.
Where was the 150 on sale for $40 this year?!
I got the 400 direct from Christmas Designers a couple weeks ago for $157, and was able to score a 250 on Black friday for $90.
when the sun isn't behind the tree
@night zodiac That doesn't look like a Twinkly tree.
WS2811 tree?
that picture looks terrible. I need a new one. No, just a tree.
I wish I got it with just white lights
next year I might just replace all of the bulbs with white
Oh man.
That reminds me...
Back in the day when I was a younglin', way before blue Christmas lights were a thing...my dad and I used to hand-dip every single bulb in blue dye just so we could have blue Christmas lights on the house.

Twinkly...
This is most in-depth review video of Twinkly I've seen.
damn breh
i'm freshly installed and new to this software (HA) and it's so awesome and i've barely customized yet
I thought about those trees quite a bit but decided on a tree that isn't going to be buck wild in the room

Man, I miss the days of having to spend 1.5 hours building open-zwave, and having to wait 10 minutes for HA to restart after every single config change. π¦
lol
"Back in my day we used to restart HA uphill both ways!"
I am spending the day restarting my HA installation from scratch
I think I am going to use the official nest integration for everything I can and fill in the cracks with bad nest for the temperature sensors.
fun
I don't miss Nest, not even the slightest bit. π
hopefully they just add the temperature sensors and I won't care about it
yea i gotta set that up at my parents house sicne they got nest for free
they are liking HA now that i got it set up for them
been a fun experiment setting it up and managing things remotely
is plex worth the 5 per month for features? i currently have netlfix and spotify family (both are 15/month)
I bought their lifetime sub a long time ago, well worth that for me
how much is the lifetime sub?
$119.99 USD at the moment
ah ok
you can just do it monthly until you see a deal
The hardware acceleration is neat. It lets my little NAS forward 4k to my chromecasts no problem.
thanks for the info!
i got lucky and got one of those 50% off deals so lifetime was 75 π
wow
yep. that's a good deal. I wasn't aware of the deals and just bought it full price.
If I use it for three years, it will be cheaper than paying yearly
'been using plex for a long time though
I'm a happy free plex user π
how dare you
i got tiny media manager for trailers and metadata and bazarr for subtitles
lol
Heh, I bought a lifetime pass when $70 was full price
I literally moved from Windows Media Center to Plex somewhere around 2008. lol
I think I ran them both in parallel until about 2013, when WMC was officially dead
I still have an Xbox original with XBMC on it
Spent the last 30 minutes hand coding an svg logo and then optimizing it down byte for byte. This can't be a healthy behaviour, I'm starting to question my sanity
I got the lifetime pass like 6 yeasr ago. Such a good purchase. Plex have been really good imho
The big reason we kept WMC around for so long was because of the TV Tuner / cablecard support
Plex didn't add DVR capabilities until much, much later... and it still doesn't support CableCard, you need a 3rd party solution for that
I ran WMC for a while as well, but I didn't trust it so I ended up having all content on two systems and realize that was just stupid
There are people who still keep a Windows 8.1 box around, with the last version of WMC installed, loaded with TV tuners, because there's no better option
What's the purpose for it? To record tv?
Usually as a centralization point for live TV and TV recordings (+ timeshifting and DVR capabilities)
So instead of having 6 cable boxes around the house, they'll have a PC with three dual tuners installed
back in the day we used 'em for DVRs
I see. I haven't had a need to record tv for the past 8 years at least. Our set up boxes have a feature where you can replay old episodes of anything I would ever want to watch later.
You can't actually do that with Plex if you need CableCard support to descramble the channels, only Windows Media Center can do that
yeah, we used windows media center back in the day I am pretty sure
Microsoft actually worked out contracts with cable companies to make that happen
somewhere around the time windows ME was released, lol
We also just have tv via fiber, there's no descrabling that we can do without the set up box π¦
we used to use IR to automate channel changes, lol
and record based on schedules
all types of different points of my life
Windows Media Center actually handles that as well. You can connect the video-out of a cable box to a video capture device on the PC, and WMC will use an IR Blaster to change the channel on the set-top-box
It was a seriously robust DVR solution (it kind of had to be, it was competing with TiVo)
oh, we had TiVo too at one point, lol
WMC was TiVo on steroids. lol
Anyways... I'm gonna jump into a call with a psychologist and talk about what would make me hand code and optimize svgs. I'm sure there's a decent enough reason.
eventually my father became one of the largest satellite box distributors for NA
we had the most wild setups
we had so many satellites on our roof
we had test setups too for like the satellites on motors. You would change channel and according to what satellite it was on, the motor would move and point to that satellite
echostar was the name of the satellites we would mainly hit, lol
I used to be pretty good at hitting it during setups
looks like dish networks relationship with echostar is a bit different now days
EchoStar Corporation is an American company, a worldwide provider of satellite communication and Internet services through its Hughes Network Systems and EchoStar Satellite Services business segments.
Prior to 2008, it operated the DISH Network service brand, which was spun off as DISH on January 1, 2008.
I remember before Plex's built-in DVR was a thing, we'd have WMC dump recordings into Plex's library. lol
Couldn't watch live TV with Plex, but you'd get the recordings as soon as the show finished
I was huge into Xbox modding
so I had XBMC and it was super fucking ideal
XBMC4Xbox is a free and open source media player software made solely for the first-generation Xbox video-game console. The software was forked from the XBMC project (now known as Kodi and formerly known as Xbox Media Player) after XBMC removed support for the Xbox console. Other than the audio / video playback and media center functionality, XB...
Yeaaah, we had 3 OG Xbox's that were used exclusively for XBMC
It was, unfortunately, never stable enough to pass the WAF test
I need to put some new capacitors in it if they haven't leaked everywhere yet
It was also a HUGE bitch to keep all the media scraped, because XBMC has no real centralization
yeah, adding RAM to the xbox was a pain and I only saw it done by like one person
literally soldered RAM into the mobo
So you had these old Pentium 3 systems scraping metadata for 10 TB of content for hours, and hours
yeah, it was back in the day for sure. haha
And each one had to redo it... and god forbid something scanned wrong on one, because you had to manually fix it on all of them
XBMC really felt like it fell apart as soon as there was more than one system running it
I mean Kodi still seems to be pretty popular
I've never used it under that name myself
Yeah, I have the same issue with it, because it hasn't changed structurally π
but so many non tech savvy people have told me to use it, lol
Except now, a decade later, there are backend servers you can use to access media via Kodi
Plex, Jellyfin, Emby, etc.
At which point, Kodi is just a glorified media player
yep. Plex took over for me quickly back in the day.
"back in the day"
= I have no idea what year
I only have some idea because I know WMC's timeline
Hey @subtle pasture, you like stats right? π
WMC had a good run. Launched in 2003, last version was released in 2013
I just remember using our prebuilt PC that came with windows ME
and we swapped that very fast
RIP windows ME
Yeaaaah, ME wasn't a terribly great product
Oh, from a technical standpoint? The biggest issue is they shipped it with Internet Explorer 5.5 Beta 3
And the shell used web integration
So beta IE 5.5 libraries were loaded as part of Explorer...
As soon as you update the OS to a stable version of IE, it's about as stable as Win98 SE
But ME has the advantage of having Windows 2000's network stack ported over, so it can actually STILL function to some degree on a modern Windows network, where as 98 SE can't
So if you need a Windows 9x environment with networking, ME is your baby, oddly enough. It turns up in weird places because of that...
Reason I asked about stats was because I just cooked this up based on someone's idea of clocking HA restart times: https://gist.github.com/dale3h/417f3e6fc2fc12a3e7c71fbeac5325c1 -- it measures the time it takes for HA to restart, from the shutdown event to the start event.
Interesting, though this can't tell the difference between restarting the HA container, and restarting the entire OS
Except that one scenario will take inordinately longer than the other
True. It doesn't distinguish between the two, unfortunately.
You might be able to add that functionality. I believe HA has an optional sensor you can enable that reports boot time vs. container start time.
...please, enlighten me.
- platform: systemmonitor
resources:
- type: last_boot```
Holy jeebus. Thank you!
systemmonitor can report a bunch of things from the host, including CPU/memory use, disk use, etc.
I am totally going to add all of those now. π Thanks!
do you have the page to the integration? i would love to have those as im running on a pi so i also get the power supply checker
But the Last Boot timestamp will let your monitor distinguish between host boot time, and container start time π
thanks!
Good bot!
#goodbot
And that, my friends, is the difference between tweeters and redditors.
.goodbot
@peak cloud You can also do this to get uptime minutes of the container with the following sensor:
- platform: uptime
name: Uptime Minutes
unit_of_measurement: minutes```
I have uptime enabled currently, but didn't know about System Monitor until now.
Ah, gotcha
Do you have last_boot setup currently? I am curious as to the type of value it reports.
I do, it reports a full timestamp: 2020-09-13T22:37:16-07:00
My Pi has been up for 11 weeks π
Perfect, thank you!
And wow, that's almost a a full quarter!
I really need to order some CFA. I am soooo hungry.
Yeah, it's about time to run an OS update. I rebooted HomeAssistant itself last night to install 0.118.4
Twinkly integration is coming in 0.119.0! I am so excited!
i wonder if i should just buy a twinkly instead..
i was counting the number of strings i would need which came out to about 130, and you could buy a tree for that
Ok, I must have missed something. What's Twinkly? π
leds designed for christmas trees
the app lets you customize the led's in an order of a christmas tree, not in a single line
so you can have layers of color for example
Do you have 22 minutes free to watch a video?

Twinkly...
Twinkly is an overpriced, newbie-friendly version of WS2812B projects.
Heh, how does it map the lights once a human randomly spews them all over a tree?
WS2812B are 5V bruh.
But it comes with an app so you can "draw" the patterns you want π
What's wrong with 5v?
So, advanced and also newbie friendly π
but noob friendly
5050 is the LED size.
No shortage of addressable LEDs.
WS2811 and WS2815 come in 12V
2811 comes in 5v? i thought it was 12v only
Twinkly are worth the money, in my opinion. But then again, I also think Hue is worth the money. "It just works."
WS2811 comes in 5V and 12V.
But where's the fun in 'it just works'? Tinkering is half the fun.
@peak cloud Strictly speaking, it's possible to design a 5v strip that will work at-distance, but it'll be more expensive because it will need an integrated buck/boost converter every so many feet
Also, the amp draw would get a bit nutty at 5v...
WS2812/WS2812B comes in 5V. WS2813 comes in 5V, but has a redundant data line. WS2815 is the 12V version of WS2813.
Just use heavy gauge wiring π
For what it's worth, I had a 5V WS2812B strip with 144 LEDs/m, and it faded quite a bit toward the last 15% of the strip. And that was using a hefty PSU.
But yeah, I tried the DIY route previously. Even designed a PCB to manage 4 channels of WLED boards.
Yeah, poorly designed strip. Could have probably done with current limiting resistors (slowly decreasing in value down the strip) to maintain even brightness
It corroded before summer came. π¦
It was an Adafruit strip if that tells you anything.
If the length of the strips is the problem, why not run multiple shorter lengths instead? I'm not saying I don't see the appeal in Twinkly, I'd just rather find my own solution.
will the new integration be local or cloud polling?
When it comes to Christmas lights, it's difficult/cumbersome to inject power on most homes.
Which also means it's not easy to send power to multiple strips.
Sure, an extension cord run alongside the lights would help.
I'm probably thinking smaller than you guys. I'd only care about a smaller tree inside my house, not all the billions of lights some Americans have π
Lol, I'm watching the linked video now.
He held up the box and it said "Generation 11" and my first thought was "woah, how long have they been making these things??"
i have about 10 reels of old fashioned christmas lights collecting dust in my basement
Poor labeling, it's Generation 2...
Roman numerals in sans-serif fonts are a bad π idea π
I have 5L of gasoline in my Jeep that'll help you take care of those.
Mmmm yummy! I canβt wait!!
Chick-fil-a π€’
#ByeFelicia
I literally just watched The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert a couple days ago. lol
F*ck. Tornado sirens are going off.
The irony of using that quote in proximity to Chick-fil-a was not lost on me
I've never heard of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert π€·
Now you know what to watch next
That's where "Bye Felicia" is from...
I currently have 200 ws2811 on my setup, hooking 200 more on that same PSU Friday, and doing 400 on the other PSU , just injectiing on both ends per 200 now, works fine
Are you sure?
I thought it was from Friday.
Great movie@subtle pasture
The phrase "Bye, Felicia" was first used in a scene in the Australian road comedy film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994), a film about two drag queens that is well-known in the gay community. A year later, it was used again in the American comedy film Friday (1995) (actually spelled "Felisha" in the cast listing)
Hugo weaving was great in it
"This article is about the phrase originating from the 1995 film Friday."
it was used in both, Priscilla did it first.
Interesting!
I'll have to check that out. I've always known it to be from Friday. π
@clear ferry Hugo Weaving was suuuuper young in that movie
I am beginning to realise that playing Trivial Pursuit against @subtle pasture would be a losing proposition ....
It also stars Guy Pearce and Terence Stamp
"Alexa, tell plex server to download The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert"
yoo wait is that possible?
It is. π
Be prepared for a wholesome roadtrip movie revolving around drag culture
mmm i need to look into plex more
@clever mortar we need to make it so, HA discord trivial pursuit night
i used it as a free user
π₯³
but i ran it on a crappy mac that was collecting dust
so it just stopped working after a whille
@peak cloud Wait, you're asking Plex to do the download? Not Radarr?
How'd you rig that up?
The free option for Plex is suitable for almost everyone. Mainly it's server owners that benefit from Plex Pass I think.
well thinking about it now could i run plex and nextcloud on the same machine for the same drive?
that will probably be enough motivation to get back into plex
Here's the skill: https://github.com/bobbintb/Ombi-alexa
Cheers!
I made a few changes, namely adding support for a .env file so that the credentials didn't have to reside inside the script.
I do have a lot of random knowledge... this is true...
I had noticed π
IMO life is more fun when you manage to steadily acquire random knowledge
You ever blurt something out, and then go "wait, brain, where the fuck were you storing THAT all these years?"
I do that at work too, where I help people solve problems by providing key details that I don't remember learning...
Oh yeah, it's great when it happens at work. One of my favorite instances was when I got pulled over to help another engineer because he couldn't get logged into an ESXi host. It wouldn't accept the password he'd just set (and manually reset)
"What version of ESXi is this? ...oh, type the password and DO NOT hit the enter key. Click the login button next to the password field instead"
Logs right in
"How the FUCK did you know that?"
That particular version of ESXi had a bug with the password entry field. If you hit enter, it would parse the carriage return as part of the password, which would always fail
My wife says my random knowledge is quite annoying, also that its incredible how such a smart person can be so incredibly stupid about my general comprehension π€£
I'd encountered it on my homelab, like, 2 years prior

Heh. Remember when you had to buy boxes for like twice the cost of the components?
I've used these before. Lots of sizes, ABS, easy to drill holes in
@low harness Yeah, and now it's a 5 pack for $8
Perfect, thank you
Some things weren't better back in the days.
Those boxes + solderable breadboards = good times
That's how my garage door sensor is built

Did I ever show my z80 computer around here?
I normally hang stuff like that in the cable π
Socketed the ESP module so it can be replaced if need be
Woohoo! My Twinkly 250 string and Solo Stove Campfires arrived! Saw them on the porch when I went to grab my oh so amazingly delicious CFA that had been delivered. β€οΈ
I've found that socketing ESPs is the best way to go for that reason, as well as easier programming.
I'm a little bit anal about my bodge wires...
I have a 3D printed form for making precise bends in them. lol
nice
Looks like Ben Eaters.
Yup, I'm subscribed to his YouTube channel. lol
AliExpress is looking like a winner for project boxes
@subtle pasture why blue wire so bent?

Cat5-o'-9-Tails
I upgraded mine to Cat6A o' ninetails
I'm always disappointed nobody crossed an etherkiller with a catX-o-ninetails
not an etherkiller, but i cannot confirm that a violet wand works well with exposed copper
I did have that HP A10500 with Poe boards that were delivering POE on all ports without anything connected
I welded a rack bar with a connected cable
that sounds "safe"
Well, it was only 256 ports of 25000
I checked the rest

i meant using HP switches π
We did fry a few access points, and a few medical equipment devices
same thing.
waits for someone to invent a PoE powered violet wand...
To be fair, the A series is 3COM Huawei
god, i miss old school 3com
3C905-TX
Didn't 3COM get purchased by HP?
905... Youngling, give me 509
I've encountered a large number of old "HP" switches that are really 3COM rebrands
the only 10/100 NIC that worked out of the box every time. no muss, no fuss
HP or Procurve?
@subtle pasture 3com merged with Huawei, and formed H3C, HPE purchased majority in H3C but we currently own 49%
Ah, that explains the overlap ^
Procurve was a seperate company, that was merged into hp
Also, this would have been before HP and HPE were two distinct entities
Which is now a subsidiary of Aruba
switch/routing incestuous relationships requires a spaghetti diagram
HP splitting into HP and HPE caused all sorts of hell with our inventory management system
does hanging a sheet between two walls really separate you as your own entity tho?
@subtle pasture don't forget micro focus, dxc and the others
It worked for BT and BT OpenReach for long enough
lol
I still like my Barney brand switches.
We use HPE / Aruba switches at work, I opted for Cisco at home
Except for my APs, those are Aruba
Hey, shit works
@clear ferry What do you use? Linksys WRT54GLs?
the cisco device tracker for HA is flawless.. just sayin
the unifi one works well, too π (start the flame wars up)
@forest edge The Aruba one works great as well
I have it tied directly to my IAPs
There's a Bluetooth / Zigbee add-on for the Aruba IAPs as well... expensive, though
i thought cisco had something like that as well
There's * for the Aruba IAPs... expensive, though.
@barren hound I've actually been able to get second-hand Aruba kit fairly cheap. The USB dongle that adds bluetooth and zigbee support is just hard to come by
My Aruba IAPs were cheaper than the equivalent Ubiquiti hardware, by a long shot.

if only you could see that mess off to the left of that picture lol
@clear ferry This little guy: https://www.cdw.com/product/aruba-ap-usb-zb-10pk-usb-zb-ble-dngl/5885282
Buy a HPE Aruba AP-USB-ZB - network adapter at CDW.com
Plugs into the USB port on a number of different Aruba APs and adds all kinds of IoT features
thanks, that brings back some memories of deploying a HP Procurve 5412zl with a controller card and those MSM APs
great space heaters
i have 4 cores in my raspberry pi
Found the datasheet: https://www.iptrading.com.au/productAttachment/IoTExpansionRadio.pdf
that's nifty
i saw Eero is doing something similar for home users
does it backhaul zigbee over the wire or just act as a node?
I believe the AP will also automatically make sure WiFi and Zigbee don't interfere, once the AP is joined to the zigbee mesh.
Kinda makes sense, since Wifi / BT / Zigbee all share 2.4 GHz spectrum
@clear ferry Sure, they're out of stock pretty much everywhere
Would be interesting to see what HomeAssistant can do with an IoT enabled AP
The dongle also adds Bluetooth LE 5.0, so bluetooth beacons / triangulation are a thing
Did anyone else just get a notification email about a beta for 1.0.0 from Frenck? It popped up in my emails notification on my phone but it was gone when I went to open my email app. Or am I going crazy?
Heh, OS update included the Supervisor update
Neat
Killed two birds with one stone, there
Making doubly sure your system no longer works π€
I figured updating the OS first made sense, because "what if there are dependencies on the newer OS version?"
But, uh, yeah... it just did both at once
Given the Supervisor is a Docker container... shouldn't matter
Hoooo boy, yes it does
Upgrade a container too far without upgrading the docker host, and the containers will stop working. I ran into that earlier this year when I rebuilt my primary Docker host
The containers started requiring features of Docker that were not available on the latest release of Docker for CentOS7, so when Watchtower updated all of my containers... poof, dead.
See, that's your problem... watchtower
It was either "wait for Docker to be updated in the CentOS7 repos" or "Move to CentOS8"
So I rebuilt the entire VM on CentOS8
Watchtower just updates docker containers...
You mean auto breaks π
If I'd updated the containers myself, it would have broken the same way
It has it's place for sure, but most HA users have shot themselves in the foot by using it π
But, anyway, yeah... host updates before docker container updates, every time, for sure...
Or configure WatchTower to install updates on a 1+ month delay, I suppose π€
Gotta love when everyone starts using bleeding edge features before they've even been rolled out for popular distros
I had docker configured to automatically update on the host, but that doesn't help when there literally isn't an update out for your distro yet. lol
Bleeding edge π€’
I'm a purist, long live RedHat
I'm suse certified, I might be biased
I'm moving all my 15 jails to containers right now in preparation of freenas scale π€£
But I like jails
FreeNAS dropping jails?
Fuck all you Ubuntu is where it's at
And windows ME
Tbh I run most of my shit on Ubuntu and it's flawless
Β―\_(γ)_/Β―
i've said it earlier today, but today is my first time using HA and it's so sick.
i'm honestly in awe i can send push notifications to my LGTV and can't wait to come up with neat uses for this.
My TV doesn't even have the interwebs π
imagine push notifications on your tv when some new movies hit the dark side of the interwebs.
@subtle pasture What kind of detection algorithm did you have in mind earlier when you mentioned last_boot?
Nah, I'd just use it to bug the wife while she's watching TV downstairs π
@frozen fulcrum That's already possible.
did someone already make that?
You can cast an image to your TV, and it's possible to generate an image with text on it.
Surely someone has. π€·
Someone needs to find a way to cast completely innocent and non-sexual images to every TV in an electronics store.
The tech wasn't good enough when I was young and mischievous, so I only had one of those universal remotes that would turn everything in range off. π¦
Speaking of new movies... Monster Hunter is out tomorrow, right?
Can't decide if I'm expecting it to be any good.
can I introduce you to the saviour systemd-nspawn?
I had a TV-B-Gone from ThinkGeek, but it barely worked half the time.
and nope, not dropping jails, just have out a new project called truenas scale, debian based sooo
is this basically the general chat?
major chat
nvm just saw the header regarding no support
ooooh..
So close!
New robot slave vacuum is already busy cleaning the house π₯³
Have you stopped it from phoning home
Must resist the urge to nickname the device "Succ Machine"
@hushed basalt What needs to be done for that?
Is it on wifi?
It is, yeah
You can pretty much guarantee it'll be sending metrics at least back to the mothership
Already gave it a static DHCP lease and static ARP, so I can block any ports necessary to just it.
So what needs blocking? lol
Does it work with local polling
It's a Roborock S4 Max, so yeah, it should
Once I make time to get a rooted Android environment set up to get the API key
If you can deny all internet access to it that's the best bet
Firewall rule that blocks any destination from that device that isn't your LAN net
Yeah, that also blocks firmware updates, is the thing
You could turn it off when you need to do that
If it has cameras in it it's also extra risky
No cameras on this one, just Lidar
π€ π€£
But in theory people can even use the LIDAR as a microphone
Yeah, heard about that
But you'd have to be pretty important for that
Are you a diplomat, politician or celebrity?
How about an C level at a fortune 500 company
Should have asked before speculating. π€£
Imagine trying to deal with security for those people in this day and age
?
You'll have to speak slower I'm Australian
Really, didn't know. Which company?
The company that manufactures the device...?
Like Knight Industries ?
π€
I don't get it
Yep same
Ain't nobody worth listening in to here anyway @hushed basalt
Just a bunch of cundiments
@hushed basalt I am messing with you man.
I mean, ultimately, this vacuum has ties with Xiaomi, and nobody trusts them
Lol
If it doesn't need to talk to the internet, I'm all about blocking it. lol
I just walk around talking mumbo jumbo. Like full on conversations with my vac.
'twas cheap, and I have a SSID and VLAN specifically for IoT shit.
Me too. @green inlet got 3 and talk to them on the daily.
Don't know how much of it is transmitted to mothership
Anyone listening is like, this guy is a whack job
Oh, and LibreRVAC is working on making open firmware, so that's interesting
Ultimately it's a damn vacuum. Not something that controls the thrust vector half way to Mars. π
True, though it does keep an up-to-date map of the house
It probably could
That's about the most sensitive thing it intentionally records
Open or xiaomi if someone could keep the maps losing orientation every few months is all I want. They could transmit shit all day to Pluto for all I care.
@frozen fulcrum
Switched to 1080 ?
Yup, that's a 1080p remux!
i was thinking something more along the lines of RSS feed updates.
like RSS announce channels on private trackers, i dunno.
i guess that would probably get really spammy and annoying.
is that image push something exclusive to the samsung api?
I wouldn't do it for TV shows, but only movies. And you could easily setup a way to toggle it on/off.
That push above was done with the Notifications for Android/Fire TV integration: https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/nfandroidtv/
ah.
That's awesome, dale. I might start using that. If we're using the TV, it's almost exclusively on the Fire stick.
@subtle pasture the S4 was on sale ?
Yeah, $110 off on Amazon
350 shipped not bad.
I figured that coupon checkbox would only be good for Black Friday, but it's still up π€·ββοΈ
It's doing a good job navigating our clutter, so far
It did try to eat a sock, though
lol
They are great. Got 1 x s5 and 3 x s6. I still prefer the s5, the way it handles dark carpet. I only have issues with braided USB C cords. They love em
When I got mine. I stayed up till like 1 am watching it in utter amazement
I didn't see any difference between the S4 Max and the S5 Max, aside from the mopping attachment
Isnβt the S6 out. I want the s6
S6 is old
It looks more powerful
About a year old.
I want to change my s5 to a newer one. 2.5 years in service 3 to 4 runs a day. I think time to retire.
3-4 runs a day π€
here we go again
If you want to donate your old one...
2 years old?! did the myans use it!?
I still have a Neato
It'd dead though
And I don't want to sink more money into crappy nimh batteries
All the after market ones are crapper too
@green inlet different rooms different times and some multiple. I am little crazy about keeping things extra tidy.
I'll wait till we are in a single story house to get a new one
Automated zone cleaning would be amazing
Clean the kitchen every day, whole house every 3 days
i swear after something has been in @tidal bronze possession form longer than two years it suddenly develops ancient egyptian markings all over it and he no longer can handle such filth around his home
I just wish they had one with a self emptying bin
Month long maintenance cycles would be amazing. Not daily
@forest edge sell before things break on eBay is policy. Nothing more than 2 years.
Most 1 year max.
good thing your wife manage to get in that exception clause
Heh, back to the dock it goes... only came out of the box with 60% charge, but still cleaned about 1/2 the house
Apparently it will pick up from where it left off after it charges back up
Yes it does.
I feel sorry for people on dumb roombas
what the hell is your ebay quad so i can anonymously low bid on shit your trying to sell?
That's like the "Low fuel" light on my car coming on with 3 gallons left in the tank
If your batteries stay cool and within 20 to 80% they'll last orders of magnitude longer
@forest edge shhhh. Don't want you knowing types of kale and kelp I buy.
you buy that shit from ebay? eww
@hushed basalt Then hide that extra capacity from the user like a smart manufacturer
@forest edge was waiting for that. Nopes. Just messing with ya.
I mean it doesn't really matter
They're unattended devices really
Set and forget. Just have to clean the damn bin and rollers
Unattended until they get stuck and start screaming for help >_>
"Dear seller: I see a finger print on your product you are trying to sell. I will give you $200 less than what your asking.. I am aware you are only asking $200 but it is what it is. Please pay for first class shipping immeditaly. thank you"
The only thing missing on roborock is estimating battery requirement per room or combination of rooms. Wish it didn't have to top up to 100% before resuming rest of the rooms. It already knows the area and even battery consumption per room by averaging multiple runs. Perhaps one day soon.
Has anyone ever used the mopping function on any of these devices
Yep I use it.
In particular the more sophisticated ones that aren't just a damp rag
Good not great
do any of you know how to vacuum and mop by hand? just curious
Sorry no @forest edge
Do you know how to wash clothes by the river with rocks
i believe it from you lol
Do you have video guides ?
Are the smart mops any good
@tidal bronze If the argument here is that they're trying to extend battery life, then they'll never implement that, because it would increase the total number of charge cycles
Eventually we'd want a house with all hard floors
ew
Cycling between charging and discharging is significantly more harmful to the battery's longevity than running it consistently
Carpet is ew
the right kind of carpet is heaven
@subtle pasture replacement oem batteries are cheap. Although I am running stock ones
who the hell does that?
Then let me use the last 19%!
noone
lol
Well the post industrial world is
@hushed basalt Brava Jet is much better at mopping.
@hushed basalt i hear going outside is nice once awhile
don't bring atx into this
6% of global deaths are attributed to outdoor air pollution. In some countries itβs responsible for as many as 1-in-10 deaths.
Finally roborock implemented no mop zone. But still not the best at mopping.
you people are going to end up turning the world into that movie Surrogates
@forest edge it will be ready when you finally move down to LA. Can't wait.
what? a surrogate?
better be 600lbs and bald with a tatoo of martha stewart on the left arm
i need to maintain any excuse possible to complain walking 5 feet lol
Why bald ?
Easier to oil them up
bald cause at 600lbs hard to comb correctly
Lol
I mean i imagine if it's out there your ass would want to go to some 5 star restaurant and even tho my clothes wouldn't fit at least my hair need to not look like i just came out of a wind tunnel and thus being bald solves that issue
I like how you envision your future. @forest edge
if your gonna go surrogate you go all out
You should always start your spin CCW
maybe we could visit @subtle pasture and teach her how to properly detect if a garage door is open or not lol
Mine garage door sensor works fine, though?
It actually tells me exactly how open it is, which is nice
and the neighbors wonder why you have pet dolphins.. win/win
It's ultrasonic, you can't hear it
it's a joke.. sheesh
@forest edge see you can't hear it. I told you π
If you use ultra sonic in series with a flux capacitor then you can hear it.
I love Frenck for the VS Code so much. Don't tell him I said so.
pretty sure he's in here, so it's too late for that
I know.
I just posted a new post on smart home product and service trends... it's not good, would love your thoughts and see if I missed anything / other feedback https://blakeniemyjski.com/blog/disturbing-trends-in-smart-home-products-and-services/
Over the last decade there has been some really great software products that have been shut down with little to no warning. This is getting so common that someone created a website called Killed by Google. After Google shutdown Reader in 2013, I spent months trying to find a replacement. During this research I determined I should try to find sol...
Big companies just π© on us left and right
true π
not the companies fault people are dumb enough to keep investing in their products after being screwed over once. shit on me once, shame on you. shit on me twice, shame on me.
keep shitting, the aristocrats
yeah
Exactly
Beginning tomorrow, Dec 1, 2020, SmartThings will start shutting down the APIs and backend systems that support the Classic app. After tomorrow, users who have not migrated to the new app yet will experience significant disruptions. To ensure a predictable impact to users who have not migrated to our new app, SmartThings will take the following ...
I'd really hate to be on a long vacation and missed that announcement.. They just deleted peoples routines
LOL
There is no way I'd ever trust something running cloud that I do not have a monthly subscription for. Even then it better be able to run locally
I'll say that lumping open source projects with commercial changes rubs me the wrong way.
fair enough, was just trying to say you are not safe where ever you go and share my experiences of pain. It's a trend and I mention that's to be expected with software especially pre 1.0
Logitech bricking remotes, or Nest killing their API is usually on a very expensive product that you bought expecting to work for a while.
I tried to list all the hub software I could think of to try and be fair
a beta project that only really has issues if you upgrade is widely different
you're not required to upgrade HA or any of the other OSS packages
I have a lot of stuff running that's just different random dudes on github. That always makes me a bit uneasy
lol that is my mom's reaction to who works on ha
then go with a commercial project that is much less transparent.
Yeah but when you have to upgrade because some service shut down or locked you out, and then that broke you is what I should have mentioned
I could clarify that
if you were running a local product (ESPhome, zwave, zigbee, etc), you could stay on the same firmware and HA version for decades.
that's not entirely true
it's a pick-your-poison thing, I pick random dude on github over random company that might not exist in a year
some products have dual functionality and talk to the cloud and will update the zwave firmware too
the august locks did that to me
but there are some things, like Frigate, that you just can't get in a commercial product
were offline for 3 months and I have 2 of my 5 locks off line (wifi) right now
uh, august is wifi
or sell your data to make a few more thousand
i said local products, you listed a cloud product
I don't do cloud stuff when I can at all avoid it
at least git allows you to see the code
august gen 3 is wifi + zwave
that's an edge case and a cloud product, that's a false equivalence
just pointing out a product is only local if it has no access to an app on the phone or network outside of a protocol like zwave.. Even then it's not safe. They are starting to rollout zwave ota updates in some hubs and I know smartthings has had that for a long while and it has caused issues with devices bricking / removing functionality.
excellent example. OTA is a hub specific thing. OZW doesn't support it right now. If you were to get a full setup (pi, zstick, some normal devices), configure it, and put it in a time capsule. it would work 5 years from now.
I'd bet by the end of next year open zwave might have ota
you only need to update HA when you want new functionality or one of those cloud providers you cite breaks functionality
and OZW wouldn't force you to use OTA, it would expose the API and let you chose to use it or not.
that's kind of the point of OZW
another thing most of those other products/services listed don't have is a way to roll back. once a vendor pushes something new, that's what you get from now on, in 99% of cases.
i could roll all the way back to my .37 config if i wanted to scrounge ebay for the old devices i used to run (gen 1 zwave, x10, etc).
now, do you want to talk about legitimate gripes about HA? go for it. It has plenty of broken edges. Put in the bug reports, help polish that roughness.
I want to talk about birds.
boobies
I've tweaked it, changes being deployed
The deprecating of a major install method deserves to be called out but so does breaking changes with the note of you update at your own pace and it's not 1.0 yet and should be expected to an extent
I appreciate the discussion
no problem.
I bought a house this year with Nest thermostats installed. When my automations come around to climate, I'm going to be looking around at current Z-wave & Zigbee options in the US market. Ecobee is still accessible (I think?) but for how long? I have to imagine they will try to start charging for API access and end up like so many others who can't make enough just from selling widgets... they have to start holding our widgets hostage to stay afloat.
it's $5 to use the official API or you can use badnest which has worked well for me
I use both
I use badnest for temperature sensors and normal nest integration for everything else
old school programmable thermostats that have zwave are inexpensive, local alternatives
i went with ecobee, but i also know that they might break the integration, and i'll put them on ebay at that point.
I would suggest ecobee, myself. My family does HVAC and they love 'em.
I also think their dashboards are sexy in comparison to Nests
i like their thermostats look (square vs round)
yeah I did have ecobee in my previous house and it did play well with HA. But at that point I was still kind of oblivious to the dangers of depending on cloud-based services.
i only spent $75/ea on my ecobees. i figure they can spy on my heating habits and try to sell me filters, and i'll take advantage of their people handling the "follow me" function of their sensors. since that will help ensure a happy spouse.
climate/comfort is a big deal in that arena
LMAO when they came out with a smart switch that detected room occupancy & temperature, but made it completely incompatible with their thermostats.
i cannot believe how fucking stupid that is.
that's like google killing off... well most of their cool ideas.
iGoogle, Inbox, Chromecast Audio (although, this was more due to patent lawsuits), Goggles, Code, etc
Where is the best place to post questions about zha quriks?
#zigbee-archived channel π€
@tidal bronze you see the new emergency orders?
All travel, including, without limitation, travel on foot, bicycle, scooter, motorcycle, automobile, or public transit is prohibited, subject to the exceptions in Paragraph V
you cant even walk outside your house now in LA lol
Knew it was coming when Costco limited me to 1 stack of paper towels.
lol they been doing that since march π
Hmmm month ago I got 2
But that time couldn't by chicken and beef in multiples, lmao.
funny thing is it's not due to the pandemic, they just don't want cali's mindlessly walking around anymore lol
Dying for some flan π
@shy comet last night got pulled over by CHP while coming home in an uber. I was woken up by flash light in my face. The uber driver has fallen asleep on the 101 and was driving at 45 going all over the place. π
my son will be upset that we cant go for our walks like normal
holy shit dude glad your ok!!
was he drunk or just tired
Is this a real story???
No he was not the cop said most drunk like not drunk driver he encountered.
The dude does not drink
Didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
lol
3AM from LAX, felt bad for the driver
didnt we just pass a bill to let them keep their hours and get benefits etc...? π
It was dead dude. Lucky someone showed up. Never seen LAX like that. I was so tired fell asleep in like 10 seconds.
Glad you're safe man. That's scary.
yea lax being dead is crazy
im still shocked at the airlines keeping all their flights the way they do
Thank you. Yes didn't realize at the moment. @peak cloud
@shy comet canceled my flight last night 6 hours wasted got on a plane today in the AM
damn
Had only 30 ~ passengers
i wish all flights were like that all the time lol
They said mechanical but thats BS. 4 flights in 10 days same freaking story.
i hate how they jam everyone in the way they do
the chances of their employees testing positive for covid is higher than that i think
I don't know the stats on that.
i find those stats purely depend on people
my friend is a veterinarian....theyve hd to shut down the office 4 times since march
first manager had positive test but didnt tell anyone because they were asympotmatic
customers who didnt care went in
Good thing is frequent flyers are very responsible. Flight last Wednesday was bonkers. I skipped 2 flights. Some people are crazy.
@tidal bronze can't you fit a private jet on your property?
these times bring out the best in people
@forest edge lmao dude.
what? save on uber costs...
Wednesday a guy got pulled out for not covering the nose. Delayed the flight 2 hours for the drama.
people cant follow simple instructions
Yep.
does HA come with a disclaimer/warning? in less than 1 week, I've went from ordering a Conbee out of curiosity/boredom, to ordering a Pi4b, ZZH, 2x switches, 3x esp32, 4x motion sensors, 4x Spirit TRV's...
everyone needs Cartmans social distancing stick
Wife and the son left him behind. Epic
@obsidian ibex thats all you got? psh
to be fair i only put the mask around my crotch
IT'S BEEN 2 DAYS SINCE I GOT THE CONBEE
im gonna have no money left by christmas at this rate
no presents for anyone
@forest edge so everything fits under that tiny mask. ? π€
@obsidian ibex thats just 2 days...wait till you hit the 3 year mark π
mask is made of spandex
mask or chin diaper?
π€£
i'm hooked, its 6am and I've spent the past 4hrs on HA
Yep
yea the honeymoon phase is real expensive here
