Dont we have user statistics around? (docker pulls)
naaah, dont feel it right now https://www.gasimof.com/blog/track_docker_image_pulls/
Hey, everyone. I recently recently tried to get statistics about how many people pull the docker images of Intelec AI from Docker Hub by time.
docker pull stats are not a stable metric, too much tools/bots influence the values
With how much RAM your system has, did it even matter?
No
It just felt good
what a load of bullcrap
I have to install chrome to use gotomeeting
Ayyyyy 1 day early too
ZZH
Yes
CC2562 goodness
But what is a zzh
Zigbee heaven
Oh
A zigbee dongeongle?
Isn't zigbee like a mesh, does it really need an aerial?
Or is this a perfect product for a server that has an aerial outside the rack?
it is a mesh, and the coordinator enjoys a proper antenna to talk to as many children as possible
Aha
Wonderful
Also, this might be a #zigbee-archived question, how many devices can you reliably connect to a single dongleongle?
Trรฅdfri is 50, but I think that is a software limit
I want to do most stuff hard wired, but a mail box motion sensor etc is unreasonable to pull a cable
Is that so thr racoon that lives in your mailbox can check its emails?
or you can track a racoon across the country
That sounds amazing actually
Didn't know anything like that existed. I am glad I looked like a moron and asked now ๐
I know I am
You defo are
weirdos still praising plex in here?
I use plex, don't praise it much though
I use Plex, and there simply is no overall alternative
Jellyfin?
Nope
I used kodi for ages
But the library crapped out once every 6 months for about 2 years. I got angry and went plex. And haven't looked back
Picked up a shield tv (non pro) for the living room over the weekend
Don't have 4K atm, and sound skips on DD (but not DTS HD etc????)
@clear ferry gotta start somewhere, this is my first venture into HA, conbee with ZHA or Z2M planned!
@forest edge giving up VHS?
@tidal bronze i will when you give up on vinyl
Vinyl is great
Plex is the best. Period.
It has a dynamic that other formats does not have
And it degrades super fast over time with use
Imagine pretending to be an audiophile and also claiming vinyl sucks ๐ค
Lmao
Because when it comes to sound quality, vinyl does suck
It just doesn't match up to 21st century technology
@forest edge that's apples to kumquat comparison
Good quality analog is always going to win. Digital loses detail.
No
Look at everyone with their sassy wee memes lmao bunch of kids
Yeah... you're not gonna last long if you come on here insulting people.
@obsidian ibex Rule #3: Do not insult, belittle, or abuse your fellow community members. Any reports of abuse will not be taken lightly and will lead to a ban.
Please take the time now to review all of the rules and references in #rules.
The vast majority of music is recorded and processed digitally.
Honestly, Iโm not sure Iโd want to stay, been here less than 24hrs and so far Iโve encountered uneducated and now kids. I thought this place would be full of chill tech heads
Hence the 'problem'
It's not really a problem. It's superior
This place is plenty chill. But yeah... Bye, Felicia.
Felicia? Lol. Is that another sassy move.
It's also slang that's like 10 years out of date
Honestly are you 12? @deft pewter
I was thinking the other direction
โบGet the free mastering workshop at https://sonicscoop.com/mastering101
In this presentation, GRAMMY-nominated mastering engineer Alan Silverman shows how music streaming services have turned the world of mastering for loudness upside down.
Explore how the tools and techniques that mix and mastering engineers of the 21st century are changing ...
๐ฟ
Current music is mastered to sound good on $10 headphones not for quality.
If you rip that music
Quad vs Scolias and Mono vs Felicia
Flac means nothing
You rip shit it is still shit
Or your lossless codec of choice*
It doesn't get better
Duh?
DSD would at least stand a chance.
@green inlet this all started with @forest edge being hesitant to switch from vhs to plex
That's not the RED interview
They stole that word for word
Lolol
@obsidian ibex
Oh ye? Was there something before RED? It was the main yoke when I looked into this stuff again
He graduated to VHS?
It's a shame sacd never took off
Yep
Looks at his HD-DVD collection in the box to the left
That page is a direct copy of their shit lol
@brazen fable you obivoulsy have not heard a decent to high end sound system with vinyl ...
Uh huh
@green inlet he finally got a tape rewinder last month. ๐
@brazen fable nice. I completely skipped the torrent scene for about 10 years! I ditched it for usenet, kodi etc, couldnโt believe it when I found out torrents not only had survived but were thriving haha
If you think I'm sassy, wait until atx gets started ๐
Someone thinks ripping Taylor swift in flac makes the audio mastering better so ๐คท
The only reason I used what. CD is because they were the only source of high quality controlled flac on the net
Period
setting up a new pc, not keeping up with all the filthy trash talk around these parts
I cant believe this @tidal bronze never have i heard such bs ..... Hell even reel to reel to can beat some modern stuff
Only a master if ripped from 64k mp3 to flac
Cd is a shit format tbh
I refuse to buy mp3s
It restricted mastering for years
But I'll buy flac all day
I actually can appreciate some of Sonomaโs ways.
Lol
this is epic
๐ฅณ
@green inlet you mean being a Firestarter?
Paying multiple 0s for a low percentage upgrade ๐คท๐ผโโ๏ธ
he is talking shit to two of us at least that have over 15k in audio ....and we dont dont know shit @tidal bronze
you are prolly 3x 5x that LOL
Firestarter == shit stirrer ?
But he can't beat the dude who cooked a steak in Delta toilet.
๐ค
๐คฃ
@clear ferry that's what hot today. ๐
Here goes another large portion of my life I wonโt get back
Lulul
Give it another few moments and we'll be called a bunch of children again.
@green inlet you done building ?
By the way, Fahrenheit is the proper way to measure temp
Kodi was great when I used it. Apart from the library
Quad, not my house. It is volunteer work, so every Saturday. Actually tweaked my lower back yesterday doing Christmas decorations so still in bed
Just tweak it in the other direction and it'll balance out
Man donโt I wish. Lower back pain is the worst
@green inlet sorry to hear that. I was actually asking about volunteer work ๐
@green inlet all that on your knees work finally catching up to you huh
Been on a break the last couple weeks with thanksgiving. Also, we donโt shingle or sheet the roof on 2 story builds so that has been happening
My weekends have been non stop lately
Honey-dew shit
This is why you shouldn't do christmas decorating
Ha ha. Michelle, every year I tell myself, โthis is the last yearโ
I'm just going to install permanent LEDs along my house
Perfect for Christmas or the occasional rave
And then the weekend after thanksgiving we puke Christmas every where
just do what @clear ferry does, buy some super cheap chinese leds strings and chuck them over the center of the roof and plug them in and call it a day
Sounds like a great way to set the neighborhood on fire
@forest edge but they should be interconnected with fiber right ?
they build using asbestos so fire is no concern for norwegians
Big win this year though. Finally got the last little tree automated so EVERYTHING turns off and on by itself
Xlights?
And lead paint @forest edge
clap dog hit tree button!
Yupper
Lmao.
Wtf does that mean?
quad knows, his fetches beer likely
I have kids for that.
๐คฃ
My daughter actually claims she is the best outta the three
So excited about clouds
Don't get clouds that often.
it's either all sun or smoke nothing else
-7 degrees celsius = 19.4 degrees fahrenheit!
When is the conference?
Oh didnโt see that Iโm on mobile
I forget some people don't use Celsius
But the interface is the same on mobile and desktop ๐ค
I can't decide which was more effort... setting up a new gas lift monitor arm or finding one that could hold the weight ๐
Glad to be rid of the 25cm square base the monitor came with.
Gas lift monitor arm ๐คฃ. Fuck man, how heavy is your monitor ๐คฃ
I need to google that
I too like hydraulics to lift my computer equipment
I just use these ๐ช๐ป
Suns out, guns out
@bitter zinc , have purchased your ticket?
No Iโm planning to later today
Ticket?
@clear ferry probably has extras
8kg monitor. 34 inch ultrawide. I didn't need the gas lift feature but it was the same price as fixed height arms I could find that would support the same weight.
You would have loved the 3x24" crt I had, only 42kg each
I used to work for a TV repair shop doing pickup and delivery
My hardwood desk almost buckled
My cheap IKEA desk definitely wouldn't have handled that crazy shit.
I think my last CRT was a 14" TV back when I was a kid. ๐คฃ
and for whatever reason Sony designed the bottom like a cheese grater
at one point I had more 17" CRTs than I knew what to do with
my school was throwing a bunch away because they had vertical foldunder
so I did some research and found out it was shitty caps
so I replaced 5 caps for like $10 and had a free monitor
I had 3x17 from 99 or something
My TV at the time was a 28" wide sony
Great tv
Before 99 I had one 17 and one 15 I think it was
It's so weird that 17" used to feel big
because they were huge
๐ค
Yuge
My 12" was heavier than my 17"
Because it contained the PSU and soundcard of the IBM
What did your wife think of your 4"?
Gj. Yall killed the chat
It's what we do
it happens when talking about atx's 4"
I'm sorry. I tried to inflate his 3.5" floppy.
the RF code website is down (https://bbconv.hrbl.pl/), anyone have another way to convert the RF codes?
Support, huh? #general-archived
What's a good channel to ask questions about MQTT and auto discovery?
Not this one
please look at the other channels for that. If you can't work out which is relevant, start in #general-archived
MQTT is an #integrations-archived though
they can also be a #hardware-archived or even #diy-archived ๐
It could be a #whale - oh, I still need to create that one
haha
#smeg
I'm gonna steal @clever mortar 's crayons
Feel free, I've got some coloured lasers I can use instead
Kodi sucks. That is all.
such hate for superior programming
Wowza HA UI is not easy. ๐ 1st time playing with lovelace.
umm it's point and click..
Depends on how into it you get
About half of my cards automatically fall back to the YAML editor
A lot of customizations and options are only present if you edit the YAML. The new grid card automatically falls back if you change the columns or square options from default.
Never done anything with UI. Point and click or not. Shits all over the place.
@tidal bronze I see the issue now. in the notes it states, "So easy a non-Californian can do it" I must have missed that cliff note before..
lol. All I ever use on the UI is Dev Tools and CTRL F ๐
Pulled out ALL Pentair Intelli shit and switched to Pi + HA, now need a UI for guest control. Don't want to be bothered with texts for crap ๐
what inspired that action
I don't trust tablets being used touch screens mounted on a wall for longevity at all
Heater control and valve actuators were still Pentair, now running HA generic thermostat much better temp control.
why not just make it all voice control. i mean you got 40 million nests around lol
guest couldn't whisper in the bathroom and escape being heard..
Guests basically never use voice control
Yep
They lock up trying to figure out what to say
LMAO. Epic shit.
I got tired of that stuff and now leave a labeled mini mote in every room.
At least Alexa has room-aware shortcuts, so you can just say wakeword: lights on and the lights in the room where the Echo that heard you turn on.
As apposed to having to know/say the room name, or worse, having to know/say the individual light's name
Would anyone be up for reading a research paper I'm working on to tell how it looks? It's on using FPGAs in IoT applications.
@tidal bronze you are one invention away from just plugging something into your head when you walk through the front door
@lavish smelt not ready for bed yet but maybe later
@forest edge Don't worry, it's putting me to sleep writing it.
lol
Plugging something aside, I just don't want to interreact with HA for any reason. Don't want to see it, hear it, press anything or say anything ๐
@tidal bronze looking for that hand gesture integration are you? *Recognized: Middle Finger - Unlocking bathroom door and initializing Fabreeze spritz now"
IR distance sensors solved that for me long time ago. ๐
Building DIY was easy finding a sloan wall plate not so much lol
Would someone familiar With Docker help me troubleshoot a networking issue? I have docker running at ip: 10.0.7.12 which had a number of containers. The docker host is forwarding specific ports to specific containers (ie 10.0.7.12:10012 is forwarded to my HA container)
The issue however is that when i enter 10.0.7.12:10012 on a browser in my local network i'm not being forwarded to the HA container but rather my NGINX container at 10.0.7.12:80/443
Nevermind, i think i've tracked down my issue to the container configuration.
so I avoided Amazon Echo as long as I could to avoid cloud reliance, but I finally caved and got one. Nothing in home automation has made happier than having Alexa whisper "hail satan" to me
@subtle pasture that pen worked by the way
pen?
Oh nice
Glad that's all that was needed
Sure beats replacing the hub and redoing all your Hue config
same. I can touch the button on my Hue without it losing connection. much better.
I let two thick coats sit for a bit and q tipped them off and then left a tiny coat on and plugger 'er in and it has been solid
I pick it up and hot potato it to see if it loses lights but it is good
Are rusty hue hubs a thing? This is the 2nd I have read about in like a week
It was probably me the first time
I can't remember but this might have been a Hue hub that arrived covered in picked eggs. It seems like it
I ordered a hue hub and picked eggs years ago and it arrived with the jar smashed and they sent me out a new shit
I gave my friend a hub but I must have gave him the new one
lmao
oh well, contact cleaner pen to the rescue
not sure if this is the pickled Hue though
๐ I have so many questions right now ๐
a rusty hue hub sounds like something you'd learn about Urban Dictionary
๐
any1 here do DrZzs christmas LEDs ?
DrZzs did
I get tired of voice controls
as soon we we have a house I'm putting tablets up everywhere
Plus google doesn't let you change the trigger phrase and I hate saying "Okay Google" for everything
I just had my house remodeled and I have CAT6 drops in every wall I'd want a tablet, but having even PoE in the wall like that kinda freaks me out
Hardest thing would be finding a tablet that doesn't cost $400 but also doesn't look like hot garbage
the Fire tablets with the show dock are pretty nice
that's a counter top tablet though
No fire tablets in Australia unfortunately
Well it'd be expensive
You'd have to buy them, then reship them
So probably $100 on top of their price
I never hear much good about being in Australia 8(
need that energy to flee the fires and insects
I wouldn't really be concerned by insects
I'm sure American forests have more killer fauna
any1 good here with electrical stuff?
if you need semaphore help I'm here for you
I want to do 1000 lights (12v string) and by z's tutorial i would need a 12v 20amp power supply. Is this safe to be using?
there's a decent chance your house breaker is only 15 amp, and even if it's 20, actually drawing 20amps continuously doesn't sound great
So a Amazon Kindle Fire HD 10" 32GB would cost about $210 AUD to get
that's not, terrible.
that's not bad at all
but i may not need 1000 lights, could I use less than needed power with a 12v 20a power supply? (probably just running 5-10pm)
A galaxy Tab A 10 is $300
There's someone who made 3d printed wall mounts with inbuilt charging but I can't remember who they were
But they looked very slick
and of course the fire tablets are compatible with those custom wall mount things that guy sells (mike something?)
20 amps is on the low voltage side, if either of you don't understand that principle you should not be playing with electronics
Would probably run CAT6 with passive 24v and a 5v usb regulator in the wall
Makes by Mike is a reputable provider of comprehensive mounting and integrated power solutions designed to drive smart home automation.
That looks like the one thanks
those are super cheap for a boutique kind of item
I'd love to hear how they work if you get one
It'll be 6 months at least
but yeah long live tablets
And real physical light switch buttons for light control
ooh I just got the Innovelli Red Series
installed one, think I'm going to replace all my lutron switches and sell the lutrons for the same or more than the innovellis cost
I wish we had good light switch options
The best option here is to use a shelly or something wired to a real light switch. Bell switch is ideal.
Z-Wave paddle switches where you can force the relay to be on 100% of the time and remap the off button to a z-wave scene
what is that? Are those british style switches?
oh man, shed the yoke of your imperial oppressors and get some nice big 'murican paddles
Wait till you see our power points
do you not use the british ones there? those are actually decent I hear
Murica buttons ๐คข
you should save up your dollarydoos and get out of there
Has to be a country that isn't 120v though ๐
ah yah I supposed you're already kinda invested
I've been saying you should move to a proper country with health care and brown cheese @hushed basalt
Nah I just don't want to support that wasteful 120v ๐
America must be under the control of copper and power companies
Big copper
we just half of it or some witchcraft like that
centre tap 240v, ew
๐คข
That's the same thing fool
Each phase is 230v I assume
No point calling it 400/415v if you're not actually using that on a single device
Yes, 3 phase 230/240v.
Anyways, my point is it's exactly the same thing
And in kitchen stovetops sometimes
Same thing != 'much better'
๐คฃ
I could half forgive them if it was 120v 3 phase
How much are you paying for kindergarten every week now @hushed basalt ?
They just upped our prices by $4 per month
So they make about $30-$40k per child

It's not a coincidence a lot of politicians own child-care centres
So it'd be probably $1000/month if we were in full time and not getting a family discount
But the more your family earns the less discount you get, so it can be a lot
My sister was paying $40k out of pocket a year at one point for her two kids
๐
only place here that has them at a decent price is sold out ๐ข
Still, nice deal overall
aye, can by three of those for the price of a 250
no new 4k monitors for sale
๐
BW\BF\BWE\CM has been an utter joke this year tbh
Yeah, there's not been any awesome deals here, though I did get a good bottle of Islay malt at discount ๐
But you pay like three fiddy for a bottle of that anyway
not like the norwegian licqour-vendor that charges ... ยฃ120 for some blended rubbish ๐คฃ
That's because they think you lot would be permanently bladdered if it was affordable, and so would impact your ability to work.
They really need to come over to Glasgow for a fact finding trip. Then they'd realise that with practice it's not a problem any more...
True, and they have mastered the biology of keeping the blood level stable in an alcohol stream
Who needs jackets when you have natural antifreeze
oh wow, it suddenly started snowing and the sky turned pink
no wait, this is nuclear winter
..
shit
grats
Bit of a learning curve, first esphome device but itโs calibrated and Alexa yells at m when the dryer is finished so... ๐ป time
too old to be dealing with this switching to a new pc crap
Has anyone got host override working in unbound dns on opnsense?
I swear I've got it all set right but it's just not working
aye, I have a few examples
yes, but no.
It works, but somewhow it's not used by the websocket in HA, so I can't login
server:
private-domain: "plex.direct"
local-zone: "mydomain.com" redirect
local-data: "mydomain.com 86400 IN A 192.168.1.102"
Is one I have noted
I haven't used config as code on opnsense yet
Wanted to see if I could get it working at all first,
Mine just shows me the public DNS resolve for my domain,
Should work, a lot of people over at the homelab discord use it
I haven't had a use for it since I migrated to opnsense
I only have three vlans currently, one regular, one for the wifes cyberstuff and one for playing with IoT devices ๐ค
Oh no, I have four, the vsphere lab I haven't finished yet
wifes cyberstuff? kinky
you want plex.domain.local to resolve if you ping or look it up inside your domain ?
register dhcp leases should do that for you if you have done it properly already
The domain just resolves to the public address on my WAN,
Oh, so it is not your internal domain
it is your externally facing domain
why do you need to use that inside your domain ?
plex will know if it is on the same network as the client via plex.direct which is the example I showed you to add if you have multiple subnets
because then it can get confused
plex.direct?
This week Plex, a self-hosted media server, announced that they now offer TLS to secure all connections, including those to the user's servers. This is actually pretty interesting. Background A quick overview of the Plex architecture to understand why this is different from the average HTTPS deployment. The server is
but if your client and server are on the same subnet it should just resolve properly afaik
My plex is behind a reverse proxy
And it's getting the x-real-ip and x-forwarded-ip header values of the lan interface of my router from the loopback
nat reflection*
then it won't go out anyway
Client is on 192.168.2.0/24 and the plex interface is on a 172.18.0.0/16 network,
let me try adding an override here
My overrides work if it's not a real domain
my override worked fine
for my official domain
pointing it to my nginx proxy
instead of doing nat loopback
๐คทโโ๏ธ
before and after
since all my external subdomains are routed through nginx I should just be able to do wildcard tbh
Unbound DNS - Unable to resolve Host Overrides
This is basically my problem
Same with my reverse proxy,
I couldn't get wildcard to work either
Hosts which are defined in unbound and in the public DNS (w/ A or CNAME in the public DNS) do NOT work.
The difference I see is in the number of ANSWER, which seems like unbound is passing the public answer to the client instead of an overwrite
; <<>> DiG 9.10.6 <<>> localnpublic.mydomain.com

That's the $1.4m AUD question
How the fuck do you guys manage to get out of the addiction of home automation. It started as a philips bulb one year back and now i spent like 2000Euros on my setup. When will this stop. Please tell me there is an end.
When your house is repossessed.
No home, no automation required.
100% efficiency
I knew i was having a problem when i hacked our air freshner to make it smart. Yesterday was the last straw when i said to my wife, how cool would it be to make the candle smart and started shopping for parts for 2 hours to make the candle smart.
interesting, my second override didn't work
I have done this for 2 years, I have used nowhere near $500 even tbh, even with all my ali express orders
He's lying
ikea bulbs keeps cost down too
Hoarders are always in denial
I am telling the actual cost not the one that i say to my wife ๐
for my wife we got everything for offer at 600$
I only stock the bare essentials in my pantry
Buys house extension to store more shampoo
$15-$30 for Ikea bulbs here
$60-$90 for Hue I mean
My expensive ones are the thermostats, door lock and the smart blinds
everything else i really got for a good deal or bought used ones or made it myself.
Door locks ๐คข
I found $50 on the street yesterday maybe I could buy some more bulbs
and we don't use blinds in this country
Wife would never know
or thermostats really
What country are you from. I will find something expensive. Why should i be the only one
Norway
@hushed basalt interesting, removing and adding the previous override that worked, and it doesn't work anymore
Told you
You dont use thermostats? For sure you should be having the radiators no?
in the 80s and 90s we had electric radiators heating the house year round
since the 90s most houses have heatpumps
and electric ovens for extra heating as needed
we have +35 to -35 c temperature
.c2f -35
-35 degrees celsius = -31 degrees fahrenheit!
.c2f 35
35 degrees celsius = 95 degrees fahrenheit!
You have like this right
@somber ferry we have water in the big cities yes, but very rare in houses
mostly apartment complexes
@hushed basalt appears to be working fine here, it is just ubuntus dns shitshow that was tricking me, if I do the dns lookups from bsd they work immediatly and always
ipconfig /flushdns ?
yep
after a few minutes ubuntu figures it out as well
so stuff appears to be working fine on my end
I feel like I've gone back to a restaurant 10 times that keep spitting in my food
When I should just go to a different restaurant
and now it works fine
Hmm plex still sees it as remote,
It's seeing my client's ip now and not the router,
in the x-real-ip header
Love that my rsync progress bar keeps increasing number of files that supposed to be synced
this was actually a win98 bug I believe... any file bigger than > 2.5g triggered this I believe
Just reminded me in a Internet Explorer "bug"
when you hit download, but not jet safe just insead waited the download time, you East saw incredible connection speeds after hitting safe. the file were already downloaded after all.
haha yeah like the downloads from megaupload getting loaded in your localstorage and then offloaded to it's final destination
There's some interesting comparissons between cheap bulbs and the more expensive. The cheaper tends to have a worse flimmer that could cause head ache and such. @clear ferry so at least be careful with what ali-express bulbs you buy
the heck?
You don't have gravity plating in your office?
My wife has migraines and I tend to notice flicker easily, and none of us have had issues with any bulbs so far, we have 2 dumb bulbs left in the house, but all we have are brands, IKEA, tradfri, Wiz, Xiaomi, gledopto so
@clear ferry itโs the kind of flickering you canโt really notice just by locking at it. But if you donโt have any problems with it Iโm sure itโs ok.
I have terrible eyesight, but I can notice flicker very well
Almost like my HDD ears
I can hear a failing HDD from across the DC
I notice flicker when boiling water. I have led bulbs in the fan hood and they cause really interesting interference patterns with the movement of the water right before it starts boiling on my induction plates.
So... not the flicker really... more the... moirรฉ... caused by it...
As far as I understand itโs flickering you canโt actually pick up on with you eyes, but the brain โnoticesโ it
@low harness i dont have induction plates but my water boiler does the same
Yeah... probably rather a function of the vessel size and shape than the boilers, come to think of it.
shouldnโt induction plates be on their own three phase line? at least here in austria we do that with high power appliances
i remember being able to see the CRTs flickering at 60hz when I was in highschool and can still notice some cheap LED products flickering
@rancid wharf That's the original Tacoma Narrows bridge
The GIF cuts off, but the bridge collapses shortly after that
So, this actually gets rather interesting. Human visual response time is contrast-based, i.e. the larger the difference in brightness, the higher the perfectible frequency. Because the phosphor in a CRT doesn't immediately go dark (and may not have time to go completely black before the next scan), lower refresh rates than you might expect are often acceptable.
LEDs change state near-instantly, going from full brightness to completely off, so the flicker is visible at MUCH higher frequencies.
Hi, would it be possible to link my self made Smart Home control system with Home Assistant to control my lamps with Google Assistant?
I still have issues shopping for LED-backlit LCD monitors because of this. Most of them, I can see the backlight flicker in high-contrast content.
Well, unless the backlight is set to 100% brightness, because that makes the PWM duty cycle 100% (always on)
@autumn owl yes, you would need to either write your own little api in your existing system and/or use #integrations-archived like REST or command_line switches, sensors etc..
if you need help with these please ask in the proper channel, the #the-water-cooler is for shitposting
Oh okay, thank you!
cheap half-wave rectified LED Christmas lights are especially bad. It's legit difficult to drive in a neighborhood lit by them, because the stroboscopic effect causes them to break into thousands of dots any time I move my head/eyes.
Some LED tail lights do it too. That shit should be illegal, it's a road hazard.
as someone old enough to have had CRTs on the PCs on my job, 60hz was noticeable by most people. Nicer monitors could push 70hz-75hz which was far, far less noticeable
Oh, I'm not saying 60Hz isn't noticeable
But an OLED display flickering at 60Hz would be a fuck-ton worse than a CRT flickering at 60Hz
yah, for sure
LED studio lights have to have PWM frequencies in the kHz range to not have visible flicker (and, more importantly, to not cause artifacts on camera)
Philips Hue lights? Forget about it; too slow, too much PWM flicker.
I am glad I am not sensitive to it. Sounds like a nightmare
I've legit had people not believe me until I took a high speed / slow motion video recording with my phone and played it back at 1/32 speed
"I told you your Christmas lights were flickering..."
I can see the flicker on Hue lights when they're set to lower brightness, as well. Thankfully we don't usually run them dim enough to see it...
Yeah, I have seen LED lights (back of cars) on film flickering (I guess they use PWM to be brighter to act as aa brake light). Otherwise I would have no idea
Yup, they use a cheap low-frequency PWM circuit to dim the tail lights while driving with the headlights on. The PWM duty cycle goes to 100% (full bright / always on) when the brake pedal is depressed.
I really wish they'd either use a 1 kHz+ PWM circuit, or go back to resistive dimming...
There was nothing wrong with resistive dimming, no flicker whatsoever...
Cheaper to use pwm? At a guess
I don't think you can resistive dim an led
๐ค
oh, I'm wrong it looks like
School electronics class says you're wrong.
I had thought that was why we had PWM in the first place
That's like one of the first things you learn... basic circuit with a power source, LED, resistor.
well yah, but in that first sample project the resistor is so you don't blow the LED, not to dim it
though I guess it would get a bit brighter right before it blew
You can have a higher value resistor to result in a dimmer LED.
The resistor is there for current-limiting, true... but if you hook up a variable resistor, you can ramp the brightness up and down.
TIL
The LED's power is a function of, well... power.
Lower current at the same voltage = lower lower.
The only real downside is the resistor converts the power into waste heat
So dimming a high-current LED matrix with a resistor could result in... a lot of heat...
That said, if it's an LED matrix, you could always just turn off segments of it to change between discreet brightness levels. No need for any form of PWM or resistive dimming at all
Is anyone buying a security camera system or has bought one recently? Looking for deals on 4-6 cam sys
outdoor home system
That's pretty much what they did with incandescent bulbs on cars. Multiple bulbs (or bulbs with multiple filaments)
So even when using LEDs as a drop-in replacement for existing incandescent bulbs, there's no reason for PWM.
@deft pewter Hey, if you know why a road-safety hazard became the norm for modern tail lights, let us know ๐
Also, being called a nerd for car-talk... that's a first...
I can't say I've noticed it over here. I think we mostly have separate bulbs for rear lights and brake lights.
I think I've noticed the weird LED lights over there... but tbh, I'm usually more focused on paying attention to your roads than to features of cars ๐
Driving in another country always takes a bit more attention than driving at home.
I mean, same, but the flicker / strobe makes it difficult
Anyway... nerd isn't exclusive to computer/comic talk ๐
That's literally the complaint here, that it's difficult to see where the fuck you're going with a red strobe light on the back of every other vehicle
A nerd is a person seen as overly intellectual, obsessive, introverted or lacking social skills.
That's most of us, right?
Yeah, I haven't noticed the flicker here.
You know what I love here? Assholes driving with their fog lights on... at all times.
Driving towards a stream of traffic? Fog lights.
Midday in the summer? Fog lights.
Yeah, never understood that...
Hell, half the time, they don't even have their headlights on... it's like they think fog lights are a fucking accessory.
Also never understood cars that come without fog lights
I wouldn't want one without front and rear but I think only rear fog lights are required by law here.
They're somehow "optional" on my car. Glad mine has them...
DRL, that does not light up rear lights, but illuminates dashboard annoys me
See at least 1 car every day that drives in the dark without rear lights
DRL?
daytime running lights
Daylight running lights
Ah
Daytime? TIL
I've been completely unsuccessful communicating that to the other driver
Thanks
you're probably right
Unsure
My car's lights are mostly automatic. I don't even have to think about day vs night ๐
Anyway, but yeah, people drive on the motorway. In the dark. With no lights on the back :/
Makes me want to give them a high 5, in the face, with a chair
Depending on prevailing regulations and equipment, vehicles may implement the daytime-running light function by functionally turning on specific lamps, by operating low-beam headlamps or fog lamps at full or reduced intensity
Ugh. This might be why I see so many fog lights now...
Low-beams should be the only acceptable DRL's. Fog lights are way too bright.
I usually use front fogs and side lights during thr day actually. It is "legal" and doesn't blind, but we have to have 2 lights on by law. Saves the reflectors in the headlights a lot (normal 55W bulbs, not projector lenses or xenon)
Doesn't blind? They hurt my eyes ๐คทโโ๏ธ
They are the same bulb, and a lot lower beam, at least on our car
there's a road near me with giant signs threatening fines if you don't turn your headlights on
Not the same bulb, sorry. Same power, 55W. H1 and headlights are H7
Low-beam lets you be seen. High-beam dazes other drivers.
I believe my van has 21W for DRL and 5W for sidelights. For some silly reason. One of those dubbel bulbs
But yeah, no back lights and that it illuninates the dash is just silly
People think that their lights are on
People think?
Lets face it, aa lot of people don't know how to fill the screenwash
So lights are a magical force
Everyone I have managed to tell about their lights say that they thought they were on because wverything was lit up
You give them too much credit. They don't know or care if their lights are on as long as they can see.
That is almost certainly true ๐
Driving with fog lights are illegal here outside of it being foggy outside or in combination with regular headlights during daytime
They are fucking annoying
And most people have no idea what park lights are
The UK:
Headlights and fog lights should also be used in daytime hours when visibility is seriously reduced โ although you must switch them off when visibility improves to avoid dazzling other road users.
Dazzling other drivers is fucking dangerous. They don't care.
They can see where they're going. They don't care if others can't.
Something that grinds my gears is the EU regulations and ev that have no running lights during daytime
Everything grinds your gears ๐คฃ
In Norway that was mandatory up until 2016 or so, then some EU regulation came into effect
for any ubiquiti nerds...
The EU has done some proper weird stuff tbh
Lots of regulations about cucumbers and such
that is the worst. I'm in charge of audio/visual/production at my church and we've got a couple LED stage fixtures that flicker like crazy on camera if they're not at 100% intensity. I really want to replace those things.
hmm. I'm really interested in ubiquiti's door access system but I'm not a fan of them trying to cram everything into their "dream machine" appliance
i don't want one device that's a router, firewall, security nvr, and door access controller...
Question about that
The "bell" is a touchscreen
Can you have tag and code for entry?
had one of those drivers today also. luckily he found the right knob just in time. ๐
finished reinsulating my attic on the weekend, I only regret not having more temperature sensors last year to be able to do a good comparison on heating times and energy usage
I wouldn't reccomend the UDM pro TBH
I have one and I'm looking to switch back out to a pfsense box
Imagine thinking superior security, stability, and feature set is stale and boring
After using pfsense for 15 years I have better judgement ;-)
Based on your past rants, I think not.
And also based on your past rants, you probably don't have very powerful hardware to run it on properly
Yeah, keep telling yourself that ๐ฅณ
lol
Damn kids
kodi is better than plex ๐
don't sweat these kids atx.. they think plex is ๐คข good ๐คข
anyone find any unbeatable cyber monday deals
Amazon's 'Cyber Monday' is all clothing and home crap. No tech.
So perfect for you
I think they missed the whole 'Cyber' part.
weird lol
Hawaiian shirts and kitchen aids for @deft pewter
yeah 11.11 was disappointing
Got my KitchenAid years ago.
not really surpising considering the pandemic and all
Sales are really disappointing now that I have everything I want.
lol
I was even trying to find cheap RAM and a CPU for my brother, but no such luck. Doesn't look like you can even get the new AMD cpus this year ๐
AMD ๐คข
Out of curiosity... what good alternatives are there to Plex? I'm using Plex now but only because I haven't come across anything I like better.
@orchid rose did you look at microcenter?
too murican
they ship outside us
Yeah but that brings 24% in added taxes
oh yea..
@deft pewter jellyfin looks good, but is still an alpha product at best
๐คทโโ๏ธ i wanted to like plex...but when i tried it subtitles didnt work baked into mkv's and you couldnt easily download sub's like you could with kodi.
hearing impaired person in family so its a must
Kodi is love
care to share? cuz i saw nothing like that
Kodi ๐คข
plex is the equivalent of a childrens see n say
https://support.plex.tv/articles/subtitle-search/
@clear ferry like this? wasn't there when i tried it so maybe they've put it in since
the movie goes play
weird. would think a firestick would be more powerful than an rpi2 and i had kodi on that for years
was wicked slow scrolling thru menus/movies for me on a fs4k
explain yourself mono!
Nevah
https://github.com/croneter/PlexKodiConnect looks pretty neat with the caveat of "I don't actually use plex, just kodi, but im interested in checking out plex once I get more dedicated local storage"
that's what @subtle pasture was talking about the other day.
I run kodi on a 4k firestick and it seems fine
also on a shield and uhh, like circa 2008 imac
might depend on interface and such, I tried one of the netflix alike skins with library integration and ended up going back to one of the defaults
team kodi ๐
still have my original xbox with xbmc and full of emulators
now that I see it.... i still need to get that IDE - CF Card adapter to get rid of that HDD
Heh, I gave up on the original xbox as a XBMC / Kodi client when h.264 became a thing
It just doesn't have the horsepower to decode h.264, and Kodi doesn't have remote-transcode to prop up weak clients
Strictly speaking, the original Xbox can play back 1080p content at full framerate, IF it's encoded correctly (generally that means MPEG2, which is hardware accelerated on the old console).
So a Plex client would still be workable on the OG Xbox, if such a thing were ever developed...
yeah xvid was kind of the limit containerwise, 720p h264 was playable I think
Looks like Kodi + the official Plex plugin for Kodi might work for remote transcoding on the OG Xbox
still an amazing machine to play mario kart with friends
Hey guys, long time listener, first time caller. I have been looking at both kodi and plex. What say you guys?
Best I ever got was 480p h.264 @ 30 FPS, anything more and the poor little Pentium 3 in there would drop frames like mad
Neither
I have my library strict in h264 and I don't have a need for transcoding, so I'm fine with kodi
Heh, real-time transcoding a 24fps 1080p file to MPEG2 would result in an 80 mbps stream. That's... most of the Xbox's 100 mbps NIC's bandwidth
Would probably need to be a lower bitrate, I don't think the hardware MPEG2 decoder can handle that
@dusky plank I'm winding up with more and more h.265, so transcoding is happening more often these days
And then you've got the weird h.264 formats, like Hi10p, which need transcoding to play on most things
Strangely enough, people don't need your permission to discuss it,
See what you started? @green inlet happy now? ๐คฃ
I find transcoding to be annoying if I want to skip around in a video, so I try to avoid it. Luckily, my Shield Pro handles the throughput just fine
I find it annoying that they keep changing the Plex app around (maybe just for Android TV). It's gotten a lot worse lately
Transcoding can be cpu intensive. I avoid as much as possible
I keep 4k and 1080 versions of the same movie/show to avoid transcoding
Why the fuckery are there so many 28" 4k monitors without vesa mounts
but for some mobile devices/lesser hardware you still need minimal transcoding
@clear ferry because you get what you pay for
@last plaza Same, but can't help it when there's an old Roku 3 still in the mix ๐คทโโ๏ธ
And the older Nvidia Shield TV, which has questionable h.265 support
True! Upscaling can be a pain
It's always nice to have the option of transcoding if a particular endpoint croaks on a particular file.
Exactly
and with my mobile device sync, it pre-transcodes it then stores it on my mobile device
super handy
prob should stop trying to watch 4k movies on lemons lol
I have a number of old DVD rips that often have issues with aspect ratio (non-square pixels of the original video file were preserved). Being able to have the server transcode them fixes the aspect ratio every time.
Oh, shit, here comes Sonoma
@forest edge See above, even helps old 480p DVD rips sometimes...
never had an issue with dvd rips
Then you may have converted them to square pixels while transcoding
More compatible, significantly less space efficient
I don't transcode...
talking about dl shit, not something i personally ripped
Then whoever ripped it may have converted them to square pixels while transcoding
The video file WAS transcoded by someone. lol
altho i do have some vhs shit I converted that also play fine
I KNEW IT @tidal bronze
We do not speak about fossils
Next up he's going to be bringing in betamax and 8 tracks
@green inlet hey vhs was a thing, cannot be helped
even have lord of the rings on vhs i think
I love you for it man
DVDs are often mastered with video that fills the entire 720x480 frame (trying to take advantage of as many pixels as possible to retain as much quality as possible). If a movie isn't 16:9, the DVD will then specify an aspect ratio, and the DVD player will squish the video so that the aspect ratio renders correctly on your TV
i.e. "non-square pixels"
so convert it instead of relying on transcoding to fix your shit lol
it is converted, and there's nothing to "fix"
The endpoint just doesn't respect the aspect ratio tag
That was not a surprise ๐
handbrake does wonders.. or use too. not sure that's still the go to thing
That's an endpoint problem, not a file problem. Plenty of video files use non-square pixels.
They were made using handbrake.
The default option for transcoding DVDs in Handbrake is to retain non-square pixels
Because converting to square pixels just bloats the file size, with no increase in quality
Sonoma I think you know not of which you speak
I know enough that everything i have never needs to be transcoded
Plex's real-time transcoding works-around the endpoint problem by converting to square pixels before streaming to the client
Your variety of devices and usecases must be hilariously small then.
Because it knows the client doesn't support non-square pixels
because Plex has a fuck-ton of device profiles built right in
I dunno if i should laugh or just wonder wtf this so called variety of usecases entails for you lol
but my movie won't play on my apple watch..
usually today it's not a matter of format or compatibility between devices because of standardized containers and formats, it's more in need when you have bandwidth limitations because then you are f'ed if the stream has to buffer
bandwidth and/or the endpoint doesn't happen to support one of the codecs
But yeah, playing from my library remotely over the internet basically requires real time transcoding. I only have so much upstream bandwidth :x
I don't watch shit abroad
once i put a few movies on my psp and watched them on a plane flight but that was the extent of it lol
Sonoma, what about when you want to watch three men and a sheep in your barn?
psp lol... I like sony and their products but I always wondered why they always need their own media formats... memory stick, UMD and all that stuff
Then he has to invite two other men over.
Lmao Mono. He is just sitting back trying to figure out a proper response. Itโs coming though
@dusky plank mine was homebrewed
or is considering i still have it
@green inlet this is 2020, 40+" smart tv's are free.. barns these days have the latest tech
I mean, that doesn't fix the memory stick requirement...
How much storage can you even get in a PSP?
think i had a 1 gb card
all i remmeber about it it was neon yellow in color lol
and translucent
It's nice you still have your memories at such as advanced age @forest edge
Looks like the largest "Memory Stick Pro Duo" that Sony ever made was only 32GB (though the PSP supports larger capacities than this if you use a MicroSD to MSPD adapter)
Looks like someone even got a 128gb card working via an adapter
The famous line by Egon Spengler from "Ghostbusters".
@subtle pasture this was back when either 720 wasn't or had just become a thing lol
movie sizes were not that big
holds up a 720p / 1080i dVHS tape
oh, Sony entered the chat in #330990055533576204
HD has been a thing since the late 90's. lol
Interesting tech, as well. 50GB per tape, which is the same capacity as a dual-layer BluRay
@forest edge D-VHS was primarily sold to record HD-TV service, which hit the market WELL before HD movies went mainstream
my first "HD" tv was a sony trinitron or whatever that name was, was a CRT and id 1080i with a 4:3 screen size. was a 36"
thing weghed a fucking ton
that was like somewhere between 2003-2006
we ended up giving it away on craigslist to just get rid of it, was in perstine condition too
sony vega
was a really nice tv, just weighed more than a car
I watched Terminator on LD. They forgot to censor out Arnie's dick when he's walking after time travel.
cool tech, the discs were massive
I think I have around 10-15 LD. Top Gun is one. Canโt remember the others but pretty sure terminator wasnโt one of them
Laser Disc is the true meaning or going out of style before it ever was in style
i think my dad picked it up from a pawn shop for $50 including a few discs
it also had one of the craziest remotes with a jog wheel
Top gun on LD is the shizzle
my uncle had a laser disc player
went out and bought all these movies
then the format died lol
whoa, I didn't realize that Ubiquiti ever ran cyber monday sales.
guess some people don't like unifi
What do you run instead? Emoji responses, only, please.
๐
So you run extreme networks? I love the barney factor.
I've been working out this payment dispute with my gardener for a while (mostly my fault), so I decided to drive to his place to drop the check off. dude has a much nicer house than I do
lol
why do i have the sudden urge to push you to make sure he's not sleeping with your wife as well lol
I would have felt it if he was fucking my hand
lol
Unifi is pretty great for what it is
ya. cheap and descent.
Absolutely descent
