oh it just looks smaller than it is
normal spacing but no f keys ore anything past the return key
You could do those stupid personalised keycaps people sell.
Glass mat? How thick is it!
🤏
@night zodiac I had some click-together laminate flooring I put together where my chair sits
TikTok 🤢
Trying out for a Darwin Award clearly
They should hand out more of them.
Although this year is probably helping them along.
@deft pewter Out of all the crap on TikTok... that was pretty funny
I've never actually logged into TikTok. I let Reddit filter it for me...
I just don't get memes. The whole internet is full of people who think they're funny... the vast majority aren't.
And TikTok... it's all one giant meme. Just a bunch of people creating short musical/dance skits.
Or, in this case, documenting OSHA violations to song. lol
Yes... musical.
So perfect for a generation with ADHD.
If people find it funny, great. It's just incredibly frustrating that you can't choose to avoid it without disconnecting completely.
Like you said, that shit gets onto Reddit too.
Hell, my LinkedIn feed has memes now.
You're a grumpy old man already 😛
🤣
blursed Mario and Peach - https://i.redd.it/9rhp1tef28161.jpg
And that's coming from someone that thoroughly loves Monty Python. I like silly. Modern humour is just... lame.
Monty Python is very different though
This is how my wife describes me after 20 years of relationship
Good British humour is very different to the modern idea of humour
Mr Bean sits on both sides of that line, and in the middle 🤣
Don't mention the war!
Whatever you do
lewronggeneration.gif
lowtestostorone.gif
Is that one of those homophobic memes?
@clear ferry Could you imagine if Nintendo did a Pulp Fiction themed Mario game? lol
"Goddamn, that's a pretty fuckin' good mushroom"
"Told ya'"
"Dunno' if it was worth no 5 dollars, but it was pretty fuckin' goomba"
lol
I'd tap that
Bring out the gomba, the gomba's asleep, well you'd better wake him up then
So Bowser would be Marsellus Wallace, then?
Mario is Vincent... so Luigi as Jules?
I would have chosen a black Maro Bros character, but I've just realized... they don't actually have one...
Also, if you google "Black Mario Bros character" you get...
Google thinks Luigi is black, apparently 😂

Mamma mia
Here we go again
homosexual nothing to do with test levels
So what exactly are you implying?
Riiiiight...
I've worked hard to nuke my test levels. Y'all can have my portion, I don't want it. lol
Maybe we should rewind to that discussion on toxic masculinity.
No such thing
Anyway, anyone get into this yet?
I'm breaking up with Alexa
😔
Did you hear their proprietary mesh network shenanigan's? Last straw for me
I enjoy saying things then having ads come up in my feed. Its like the easy way to google
They're getting wiped and ebay'd
That's too bad, but you should tell her in person before you brodcast that on a public Discord server
3/8th of the way through a hdd burn in test
This stuff takes a while :/ have been running since Monday
Seems support-y

Sorry
My girlfriend's mom requested I print some 2020 Christmas ornaments... this is the link she sent me, lol 😂
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4653531
i'm totally stealing that.
I'm warming up the printer now, I want a couple of these on our tree too
You could probably slice the STL file for a laser cutter, as well.
it says the fusion file is included. so its fair game
props to the guy for including it. no idea why most people are so stingy.
and collected lol
@subtle pasture printed. i might hang it on my sister's tree when she's not looking. she has kids ~10. 🙂
🤣
I really like my Ikea Symfonisk 🤔
I should buy a second one to have stereo in my office
Also thinking hard bout buying the ikea speakers. But smb1 in my home 🤢
They still require SMBv1 for something? O.o
Last I checked, but that was on the Austrian launch. Where looking at the speakers with disgust.
Just looked into it... yup, if you want a Sonos speaker to access a file share directly, it only works with SMBv1 shares
Which might as well read "SMB shares are not supported, because nobody is running that protocol version anymore"
Luckily they support DLNA, so you can push media to them from any DLNA server (such as Plex)
Yeah, it's a sonos, there are tons of app integrations
and the hack to make them amps for floor standing speakers to make them wireless is pretty cool
But if you just want to browse media from it, or shove media to it, DLNA is a decent alternative to a SMB share
there are no smb1 devices in this house 🤣
Plex also works, if you have a Plex server
I did mention that, lol
Coffee does tend to get things moving, yeah @_@
My wife says I move like a british politician late for a meeting when I need to go
she can tell my by my style
What do you guys do to identify everything? Do you go for "HASS" , Vacuum cleaner, lawn mower. Or do you give your stuff names like: Tom, Jerry & Spike? If the latter, what are you guys using?
I use the same naming convention as for cats - just call everything the same thing, they're gonna ignore you anyway
It depends on what you are referring to
I name my servers differently from how I name my home appliances
Yeah, I only "name" computers, and even then some are named for their function (backup or familyPC)
I should close tabs more often
That is only one of my four firefox windows though 🤔
I'll be fine though
lol 5 zombie tasks 😄
all the zombie processes are [vmware-remotemk] <defunct>
dem horizons
I have to run a win10 vm for a single customer vpn solution
How many ethernet ports are you all running at home
I'm weighing up getting a 24 port switch but I don't think it'll cut it when I actually run my own cabling
more
Two 10-port switches, a 28 port switch, and an 8-port switch. Also one additional 8-port switch for LAN parties.
I've got 16 ports in the office (currently doubling as my server room), a couple of 8 ports (one of which could be a 4 port), and a couple of 6 port ones
I like the idea of having no switchces outside the rack
even if that means running 4 cables to a TV point
Yeah, can't really help that with how my house is wired. All the ethernet drops terminate in a cabinet (far away from the server rack)
But the Mikrotik 48port POE is about $1300 AUD
So there's always going to have to be a separate switch in that cabinet
Yeah, even if I ever get around to proper wiring, I'll end up with some switches around
And I have 2-port LAGs everywhere, so that's nice 😛
If I can persuade the better half I'll be aiming for at least 2 ports to each room, and more in many cases
Trouble is, still doesn't help where there's half a dozen devices that have a network port 😄
If you're after decent cheap switches, take a look at Cisco SG200 / SG250 (L2), or Cisco SG300 / SG350 (L3) series switches
'Office' as bedroom 4
Full managed, L2 and L3 switches, usually for less than $200
You'll set off @clear ferry if you say cisco
I mean, they're not Catalyst series switches, they're small-business switches
So you get a cushy webadmin
But yeah I think a 24 port would fill out very quickly,
I'll have to do some more thinking
My crappy netgear 8 port died so I'm down to just router ports now 😄
This 52 port is going for $125 right now. lol
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Cisco-SG300-52-52-Port-Gigabit-Managed-Switch-SRW2048-K9-V02-w-Ears/402529300184?hash=item5db89daed8:g:zoEAAOSwnclfoKNf
Get a 24 port with a couple of 10 Gb uplinks 😛
Yeah, but it could be worse... it could be Ubnt 😛
@clear ferry The SG series existed before Cisco purchased Linksys...
Yeah, but linksys got merged into it
It literally can't be rebranded Linksys hardware
Pretty sure that only applies to the really low-end G200-08
Might be, but it is still the case then 😛
Which is still a handy managed switch, but it is more limited than the other SG200 switches with more ports
Also, Cisco discontinued the 8-port SG200 in favor of a 10-port SG250, which also isn't Linksys based, because it came out after Cisco sold Linksys.
You can get a Catalyst 2960(x) for 40ish dollars though, that'll do L2 and L3 and be powerful enough for most
I have a few of those laying around here
15 years old, but hey, it'll kick most consumer stuff these days anyway
15 years old, no firmware updates, and not many people like to rummage through conf files to configure their switches
gui config 🤢
Oh, and you better stock up on CF cards to store config backups. lol
you nasty
Centrally managed GUI config. The SG switches all support Cisco FindIT 😛
Make the sick face all you want, I can drop an SG-series switch on my network and my FindIT Probe will auto-provision it with credentials, NTP server, VLANs, SNMP config, SYSLOG server, firmware updates, config backups, etc.
I'll pass
If you have a FindIT probe on your network, a unconfigured (or freshly factory reset) switch will auto-provision. It's pretty sweet.
I might do IMC autoprovision with Comware, but only if we are talking... 25000 port scale
🤣
You do you, I guess. I like the auto-config. I swapped out an SG300-10 for an SG300-28 and I literally didn't have to do anything.
Pulled my VLANs, started logging to my log server, SNMP community matched and was picked up by Observium, etc.
You still have to do the physical cabling, transferring the config or redoing the config adds 5 minutes local onsite
There wasn't any config to transfer, it was automatic
when it works yes
A used HP switch could be an option
Switch was auto-assigned a configuration group based on the port it was connected to on the upstream switch, so everything was automatic.
but they're so thirsty and I assume loud
always cracks me up. looking at MSI MB's on amazon and this was the top rated question.
Oh neat, I didn't realize this. Cisco actually moved L3 routing down a segment in their product stack. Previously, SG200 was L2 only, and SG300 was L2/L3
The SG250 now has L2/L3
isn't it past your bedtime?
full L3 or "L3" ?
L3 static routing. You need the SG500 / SG550 for L3 Dynamic Routing
Though most homelabs probably don't need dynamic routing
#zigbee-archived would be where to ask 😉
Thanks bud
I should order some LoRA stuff to play with
Implement a long range temperature sensor for my daughters kindergarten
they have a chicken coup
Ask hax he's the sensor expert
I'll pass!
after seeing some of your pictures I don't see how it would be any different than your homes 😉
I want a need for Lara WAN
why in the hell are tv's getting so damn cheap
they have been cheap for a decade
I paid almost 3k for a 55 back in like 2006 and a 65 is only like 500 bucks today lol
Probably you can get a 85" tbh
lcd yeah probably
Not sure if there are any bigger than that yet
eagerly waiting to replace a projector with a TV but not quite there yet
yeah, appears 77 is in that range
was sure I had seen a 85 in that range
might have been a flash deal
there are 88" but they are $30k
🤣
I've measured I have room for 90" in my living room, so my 2yo 65 will probably be upgraded at some point
42kg, not too bad
I have an 85 and it was pretty pain in the ass to install
Depends on the wall, but 50-60kg 100" sounds pretty great
Who said anything about taking anything out @quartz ether 😉
yeah, my wall can easily handle that, but our building codes are probably better than some other countries with their drywall shit 🤣
Yeah I have some of those and it's not something I would be comfortable installing a 30k€ tv on 😄
I think I put 8 tech screws in that were each rated for like 50% of the tv's weight and the bracket I used was rated for a 110" tv and 3x the weight of the tv
hehe
drywall shit huh? you mud huts people just think throwing poo on the wall and letting it dry is the best there ever was
I mounted two pieces of wood on my wall across two construction pieces inside the wall (norwegian code is 50cm apart) and mounted my swivel mounted 65" to those two bars
I have an old not-so-flat 42" hanging in this room on just two studs. tv weighs a ton lol
My 50" plasma weighs a fair bit
We have 4x2 studs in all walls but 50kg is not something you want to swinging around without something decent holding it up.
🍆
No cardboard houses here
I also just measured my living room space for a new tv and max out at 55 😒 so I ordered a lg cx...
guess I live in a ant house 🤏
I have a 75” and really can’t imagine wanting more.
It over takes the room.
Pretty common these days for builders to put 1/2” ply for the obvious place your tv will mount
Our media room cant fit anything bigger than a 65. So the 85 is in the less formal lounge.
Along with an outlet an Ethernet ports
It should be way more common. It makes way more sense
I think my 75” has about 3” of wall on either side
yeah, my collegue had a house built last year, they put ethernet ports in every room, to a central rack in the basement
apparently the norm now
I have an “network closet” in my house with all cables pulled to it. It is small, and in the laundry room, but it works.
Pulling more cable in a two story house is difficult without tearing things up anyway.
the norm here is becoming more and more 3-4 story houses though, which makes the central rack quite a good idea imo
i converted the phone jacks since they ran 4 pair cat5e
I always wonder if people are just scared to try a bigger TV or if they just can't physically fit it in the room when they say they can't get a bigger one
I've heard the same line since TV's got bigger than 32"
and in most modern houses they put in extra cable tubes and you have drawings of the building and cable tubes so you can install new ports and power later
which is nice
since landlines haven't been sold in 10 years, and cable tv is dying for over a decade the only things you need inside a house is power and ethernet
Mounting mine took 3 of us 😉. I would prefer better technology over size. I purchased mine in 2015 so probably already outdated
I always laugh when I go to the recycle place here. The TV section is always piled high. When we moved in 2015, I could barely find someone to take my rear projection TV 🤣. Obviously very outdated at the time but it still had a great picture. TVs are pretty much disposable these days
I don't think the tech has advanced that much since 2015 tbh
there is some benefits to not going huge tv right off the bat. when you get older and retire you can more affordably get a bigger tvv and renew the wow factor without needing to take down some walls to make it fit
interesting viewpoint, but by that time I'm sure we'll have some new tech to blow our minds
well if it's VR tv I am not interested
More than likely 3D hologram tv that comes from the size of a Roku box
VR is pretty cool, just with a google cardboard and a smart phone
Muse has a VR music video on youtube
and I've used it with google street view to revisit cites I've been in
which is cool
I don't see VR being the replacement for TVs though, but it's definitely a cool tech
Muse is good music
@scenic radish will love you @last cedar
Tediore is away for 4d 21h 19m 3s with a message :point_right: 🤏
they are OK, some of their stuff is catchy to me, but I'm more about the tech, matt bellamys kaos pad is 👀
but I build my own guitars and pedals so
Yeah, his equipment is really cool
I'm sometimes abhorred at working in a technology company and seeing my collegues struggle to understand basic concepts in MS Teams

why is my spotify saying that casting to my bedroom speakers is a premium only feature....
That actually blew my mind thomas. At first I was like what's so interesting about this until I noticed and
I was sure the inner circle was moving at first, but that's not it either.
Yeah, that's really spooky
Not having spotify premium 🔕
family account with 5 users is only 10% more expensive than a single account
I spent hours putting together a single ikea piece of furniture. Only a bunch more to go.
I need to hire someone to do the rest for me.
What could I need from ali the next few years? 🤔
Faster shipping
nah, Europe ll close the borders for small deliverys (wel not true but they ll tax it)
so I have to buy stuff I could need before I need it -_-
Faster shipping ?
I got something in 5 days recently
most stuff is 7-14 days
feckers
We pay tax on stuff from AliExpress
We do too now, but it is still 50-60% cheaper
So it doesn't change anything for me
I mean it can be 90% cheaper on some things
The idea for the tax was to protect "norwegian businesses"
20% cheaper on zigbee stuff
but hey, we aren't shopping there anyway
It's to protect middlemen
How dare you buy cheap stuff from China, that's our job!
@clear ferry so your dollar earned is only 30c in pocket ....between income tax and sales tax....... 🤣
eh, haven't done the hard math, but my income tax is 30%, regular stuff is 25% and food is 12% tax, but I can support the whole family with a single income and I don't have to worry about going bankrupt if I sprain my ankle and my wife is doing her masters for "free" so I don't complain 🤣
one subject at a time .....i dont have to worry either ....so guess i was right ....
i have 68% of income in pocket after all taxes .....so not to bad i guess
and yes that is hard math ...i have money software
so am i right a dollar earned is 30% ...you buy a item with same dollar (25%) u can only buy a 45c candy bar and break even
I don't have worry about going bankrupt if I sprain my ankle
Another important take away from this is also "I can quit my job and"
If I were to get fired and couldn't find a job the state would pay me 70% of my current salary for up to a year
which is also a plus
we have same and it varies state to state (not for fired but if its no fault of your own)
Hey I prolly wont be on tomm. but for those that believe in the giving of Thanksgiving.... I want to say
HAPPY THANKSGIVING
Amazon EC2 is down this morning
All of our LoB apps at work use ConnectWise SSO, so... no work getting done today
I take no responsibility
@subtle pasture so 1/2 day turned into full day off 😛
Nope, the two owners aren't responding
Nobody else (who isn't off already) has the authority to call a snowday
So the entire company is sitting with their thumbs up their asses
Kinesis is experiencing increased API errors in the US-EAST-1 Region. This is also causing issues with ACM, Amplify Console, API Gateway, AppMesh, AppStream2, AppSync, Athena, CloudFormation, CloudTrail, CloudWatch, Cognito, Connect, DynamoDB, EventBridge, IoT Services, Lambda, LEX, Managed Blockchain, Resource Groups, SageMaker, Support Console, and Workspaces. This issue has also affected our ability to post updates to the Service Health Dashboard.
Amazon can't update their own service health dashboard to show that shit's down. lol
Depending on cloud 🤢
@clear ferry Our vendor really gives us no other option...
Shitty vendor
All of their applications use their SSO portal, which then links to your actual SSO provider of choice
Yeah, it's ConnectWise
We know they're shit
Wait, is that what those bundle of fibers I dug up go to?
Sorry everyone
They were covered in trash
as opposed to when they normally just don't update their health dashboard haha
If you want 100% uptime, you generally have to colo in a datacenter (build your own cloud) or use the cloud for failover...
You can't guarantee 100% uptime with no off-site failover
And don't have children or pet racoons
Single site? 🤢
Gotta have three sites
With full replication, and servers that multipath between the three arrays
And proper services that handle clustering or load balancing
Ain't hard
I have one client that has a 100% uptime without cloud - and has had that for years
They even test their backup restoration at least weekly, and DR at least monthly
Apparently all it takes is caring enough to make it happen... who'd have thought 🤷
🤣
Hybrid cloud is fine, as long as not a single service only lives in the cloud
@clever mortar Yeah, it's easy to get near 100% uptime with the cloud, you just multi-home on both Azure and AWS
The odds of both being down at the same time are very, very low
If your wan is down both are down, customers can mostly work fine locally without wan for days
if WAN is down we can't work anyway
That's an MSP problem...
if WAN is down, we don't have email, tickets, or phone calls coming in
Smoke signals
No tickets coming in? Not much work getting done.
Transport snails
Just means customers are happy, bask in it
We have redundant WAN, but an upstream fiber cut in the wrong spot can take both down (found that out last year when a backhoe dug up some fiber out in the countryside)
That's why you don't order fiber from two vendors
We didn't, lol
One is Comcast Cable, the other is AT&T Fiber
They both eventually connect to Level 3's backbone, which is what got cut
All ISPs south of the cut went down for several hours
But then you ordered from two different ones 🧐
Yes, that's what I said...
Two different ISP. One cable, the other fiber. They both, eventually, connect to Level 3's network
And Level 3's fiber is what got cut
Yes, you order redundant lines from the same vendor
You said "don't order fiber from two vendors"
We didn't order FIBER from two different vendors. We ordered Fiber and Cable.
But maybe American isps don't offer that
🧐
I've said it 3 times now. lol
if they're two lines from the same vendor, it's not really redundant... because they'll both go down for sure...
So yeah, we ordered two WAN connections, from different vendors, for redundancy
Yes it is, because they have two different routing paths
We do that here
Every vendor has atleast two different cable paths from one side of the country to the other
If we order AT&T Fiber twice, we just get two connections to the same distribution panel. lol
Zero real redundancy
Nothing touches the same panels here
everything here is the same copper for hundreds of miles until about 5 years ago when a new company ran new fiber
You also get the fun where you get redundant providers, but through the same physical location at one point
both of the big companies would always be down at the same time
This is where it pays to have good relationships with people who know what really does on
we were working IT debating if we should get another line but it was pointless at the time
@clever mortar That's basically the nightmare scenario we wound up in. Fiber was cut, but it was the fiber that was feeding pretty much every ISP in the California central valley
I now understand why @forest edge says he'll never give up his landline, America is Norway in 1970 when it comes to telecom 🥳
welp I think my hassio install is fucked
Lounge against the machine
had a power outage yesterday and now the vm is all wonky and stuff isn't initializing
yayyy
Thankfully you have backups of that wonderful easy to manage locked down appliance
So, uh... if the whole Discord window shakes when I try to add an emoji response to someone's message, does that mean they've blocked me? 🤣
open the inspector and see if you get a sweet console.log
I always forget this is an Electron app
haha
@clear ferry i wouldn't be in it if I had backups
403 when trying to interact with them. I guess that means they blocked me.
yup
HI, QUATRO! 🤣
well at least you backed up your configs
You can still quote them, so there is that
@night zodiac the configs are still there I guess so that's good
it's just not starting up properly anymore
oh well
I'm terribly upset right now.
I just moved and have been waiting on a switch for more ports so I can redo hassio entirely.
I'm automationless other than google routines which is fake
yeah I've been meaning to do a complete redo anyways since I'm on an unsupported setup anyways
Speaking of supported stuff...
I need to see if the boot from usb is out of beta but I am too lazy atm
@astral warren There's no support for Home Assistant here - please look at the other channels for that.
No politics, religion, or any other obviously contentious topics! Please ensure you've read the Code of Conduct (https://www.home-assistant.io/code_of_conduct/), and #rules.

@midnight adder Time to invest in a UPS...
i'm not asking for support?
It's a fine line 😉
And if you were running from MicroSD... switch to an SSD
^ big one
My entire network core + IOT wall is battery backed. lol
@subtle pasture nah I migrated from rpi to VM about a year ago
pretty sure it's running off the ssd array
Leapo, same. I will probably get more too.
I have all of my networking, my pc, and one of my monitors on it and will probably isolate the networking stuffs.
thank god I migrated the VM to a difference machine about a month ago btw seeing how the old rig quite literally blew up yesterday
very pretty.
that's the ikea board isnt it
Nah, Home Depot special 😛
I've been looking at getting a few
I was going to do something like that for my bedroom yesterday but stuffed it all into an IKEA side table
my main network stuff is in office and then I have some other stuff stuffed into the bedroom atm
Leapo, very very nice!
Yeah, this takes up the spare closet in the home office, along with a 12u server rack.
Server rack has its own 1500 vA UPS
I think I will an an in/out fan for the door on my side table
I think I have that for my networking jazz as well
now for the opposite
🤢
lol, I'm not going to invest much time into it. I think I am moving it to the living room anyways once that furniture arrives
I have to smash an 18 port switch into this today
the lackest of racks
my very cable unmanaged stack
🤢
is that real
in the middle of the living room because i live alone
I should dust it off tbh
should probably also check which cables are still in use lmao
I think I need a new Hue bridge
any time I touch mine, it goes out for a sec
my vacuum has been running nonstop at this new place and its always full of dust. so much shit embedded into the carpet it's getting out.
I had a few in my cart at one point at my old place but this new place is much cleaner. The previous people just didn't replace air filters or vacuum much.
I need to invest some time today and see where the whine is coming from in my HVAC shit.
🤢 🤢 🤢 🤢
either a dirty fan or bad bearings
a carpet cleaning service came before I moved in but the roborock keeps getting shit every day
like full bins
alright, time to spin up a brand new shiny VM and redo my setup I guess
I'm a VMWare guy and mostly run debian/ubuntu server stuff
practically the same, ubuntu just installs faster for some reason
idk
This is acceptable, almost, if you redact Ubuntu
I don't really notice much difference between headless debian distros
at the end of the day I just don't really care
🤢
I think I'll stick to 4 for now. I'm to chicken to try 5 for the USB boot. I'll just continue to do data partition on the USB. fek it.
Can i install this on Raspberry PI 1 Model B
the first rpi?
pretty sure the minimum is rpi 3
It doesn't have WiFi build in it
Folks have used a Pi Zero, which is the same hardware as the original Pi. But your life with it will be painful. The install may take a day or so. Performance will generally suck.
TL/DR: Don't do it
I wonder if they're any good for use as an mqtt server
Where i can get Pi4 2GB the cheapest :D
(I know folks forget that their country isn't the only country, but it continues to annoy me that nobody thinks it matters when asking where to buy stuff)
"Something very bad is happening"
this place has a light switch that I haven't identified yet
Is it red and says, do not press?
not yet
I got a label maker to label all of my switches and I'm doing that now
the person that made this was a fan of three way switches
is the ova image supported at all
the second fedex man of the day rolled up in a uhaul
i love how amazon makes sure not to run their own shit on AWS lol....they may take down 1/2 the net but not themselves lol
They are smarter than most
I just emailed a lawn service about removing some leaves. I wonder if they are able to still. Idk why not but Idk lawn service stuff.
Yes, I have a few reasons for not doing it myself and I want the yard to look nice and not have leaves under the snow when it comes
then I need someone to mow next year
Buy a sheep
Free cutting and fertilising
Don't buy a goat
It will eat the house around you
And don't buy a trash panda
Thry will steal your valves from your lawnmower
Who buys trash pandas? They just turn up for free.
Not in Sweden
I would gladly buy a trash panda
I want a trash panda, a short clawed otter, eagle owl and an alpaca
if mqtt is going to be the main messenger between HA and your sensor network, do you really want it running on a wifi device? IMHO, Home Assistant, mosquitto, etc. should be on ethernet in case you're having wifi issues.
I thought that conversation had died. Support belongs in support channels.
@blazing parrot doesn't the rpi 1 have lan tho
yeah, lan is good. WiFi not. I was responding the the RPi Zero scenario, and trying to discourage that.
Oh
I've been meaning to get some more rpis around the house and just hook up random shit
Maybe throw up some cameras and additional receivers, you know
🤢
Maybe pull some cat7 to the bedroom, throw in a second switch, put up another AP
It's too bad orange pi zero's aren't all that stable, they're cheap and small
Hey I might even get some fiber just to have an excuse to get one of those fancy mikrotik switches
I would personally use conduit and then run what I needed. I think most of my runs will be normal cat6. I will install what I have on hand
iirc they have a small one that has an sfp+ uplink port and four gigabit ethernet ports
Come to think of it I think I still have a mikrotik AP laying around somewhere
One of those routerboxes
They're pretty fancy and you can set them up to broadcast networks with emojis as SSID
Which of course totally screws around with older devices in the area that can't parse unicode properly
I thought I was being smart doing that. I had one with a smiley type face for home and a frown face for guest. On some of the kids devices, it didn't work so well. Ended up ditching it recently for a more normal name
Some devices, it was just blocks
Yeah I remember it straight up crashing my Xbox 360 at the time
They have more nintendo stuff. I don't know if it was the 3DS or the wii u that was really odd
The nds doesn't support it either but rather just shows random kanji
Actually, I don't even think the 3DS connects with WPA2 properly
I mean to be fair does any Nintendo product have proper networking?
They have yet to release a single console with native ethernet lol
It's all crappy dongles
i have to do a static nat pfsense for their switches to join the online lobbys
There is some info if you're curious. not even sure if it's still an issue, but just left it in there
It always bothered me how there is no real way of including my Nintendo consoles in hass
None of em support WoL or anything like that
@midnight adder Heh, I remember going through this to get our two Switch consoles online
Xbox One and PS4 can use IPv6 to avoid NAT altogether if you have native IPv6 on your network, but the Switch is the only modern console with no IPv6 network stack.
You can also assign the console a static DHCP lease, then enable UPnP just for that IP address, to make things really automatic.
I put all their stuff on their own vlan and I had upnp on for awhile, but never saw anything in the logs for it
I wish I got native ipv6. I had an he tunnel for awhile, but never put it back when I rebuilt my pfsense box
We have two Switch consoles, so UPnP was a must
They dynamically assign port forwards for themselves
Huh.. maybe it depends on the game?
I don't see any "sessions" in pfsense for it
I enabled it.. just haven't seen it used
Don't be jealous of our 100% uptime..
I forgot sized cables for the new stuffs.
Oh well. enough ports to add the pis back
Yeah... that white one. Wrong form factor for that rack.
Heh, 2-post telecom rack?
Also... how's signal on the Hue hub? Can't be doing too great surrounded by metal...
This is why all my shit can fall back to local control...
Glad so many devices have Homekit as an option, and it's local-polling
Hue is fine. There are a bunch of bulbs just a few feet from it.
Ah so it can bounce through those
yep. I noticed some corrosion on the ethernet port of the Hue. I might get a new one. If I touch this one it flickers out for a second
I tried to clean it with some alcohol but might need more patience
WD40 on a q-tip
It'll help lift the corrosion, and the oily coating it leaves behind will prevent new corrosion
I was looking up contact cleaners and see that wd40 sells their own now
Fun-fact: the original purpose of WD-40 was as a de-icing agent on Atlas rockets 🚀
They'd literally coat the entire fuselage with WD40 so ice would slide off it during takeoff
https://www.amazon.com/MG-Chemicals-801C-P-Contact-Cleaner/dp/B00H5A61G0/ I'm going to give this a go
Worst case, you crack it open and solder in a new RJ45 jack
No need to buy a whole new hub
And... maybe try a different cable
yeah, I've tried a new cable. i can see corrosion on 'er. I will definitely look into a new rj45 jack but I bought that pen and I am pretty confident
WD-40, Hot Glue and/or Duck Tape fwiw.
How do you have rust on ethernet port? Too much moisture?
Moist packets
As an electrician who deals with high voltage and communications contacts daily, Dylec is the best you can buy
But likely overkill for RJ45 lol
I'd make philips replace that hue and 2nd on the deoxit for cleaning/protection
A+
Hi! The website is not sending emails when I request a password reset. Is here the right place to ask for help?
WD40 is for Water Displacement. Don't use it for anything else, there are better products for whatever you think you can use it for.

Pssh, the WD40 contact spray is great, I've used it on my synth, it was like brand new
Apply the WD-40 Specialist electrical contact cleaner spray to establish strong electrical connections on circuit boards, controls, switches and more. This electrical contact cleaner lubricant removes dirt and residue and dries quickly to leave a clean surface for contact.
No residue either
Yeah ok, that's not the general purposed product though.
Nope
Their product became their brand name
but the contact cleaner is amazing tbh
I've tried 4-5 different ones over the years, this was the best by far
Well just dont use the non "specialist" WD40 as a lubricant or contact cleaner. It turns waxy with age. An ex-colleague of mine used it to 'lubricate' some locks at remote receiver sites that take a day travel to visit. 6 months later during our maintenance scheduled visit we found ourselves well and truly locked out.
Yeah I believe people were suggesting general wd40
Which is one of the most useless products imo
Useless to destructive
its great to loosen rusted bolts when working on cars tbh
but in the end, stuff is so stuck you'll mostly be using a small flamethrower to losen the nut or just crack the nut
if there is room
So.... you can replace WD-40 with a garage full of other things 🤔
everyone talks about pb-blaster as the worlds greatest thing
BUT THEY DON'T SELL IT HERE
I mean, I agree, it's a crappy lubricant, but it's not designed for that
@clear ferry There's thing called The Internet, it has shops from all over the world you can buy from.
Grey import.
fleabay
Just go to any mechanic specialist store and buy what they have there
buy wd40 you mean
Having a dozen types of solvents etc isn't abnormal at all
Use the right tool for the job
so sledgehammer
Using literally nothing is often better than using wd40
Nekminnit you'll tell me you put it in locks
Happy Thanksgiving to you civilized people
Call yourself civilised? You can't even spell it correctly 🤣
But... Happy Turkey Day to all our friends across the pond.
civilsurprised?
"When all you have is a hammer.." I can't properly see how wet the roads are when looking out of the window, so I figure the next step is a "road wetness" template sensor :F
argh this would be difficult, since wind speed and temperature are major factors
truly a relaxing feeling
@deft pewter my wife says I have a shaving problem
You shave too much or not enough?
Or maybe he shaves things that shouldn't be shaved.... shaving strange patterns into the hair of passing strangers 🤔
Is that because you're enjoying your DE?
I shave daily, but then I don't have to shave my skull 😄
People bash the Proraso stuff but I quite like it.
Maybe it's just that people are snobby and want to show off all the artisan stuff they spend a small fortune on.
I use their "healing gel", but not their soap
Aye, the green tea is great for me, I don't like lots of smell, and I have sensitive skin
I'm not going to pay £20 for a soap when £5 will do.
I spent about £10 - Mitchells Wool Fat Shaving Soap
I bought the kit with the pre shave cream, shaving cream and soothing balm for £23
But, each thing lasts most of a year
You're going to upset the vegans, watch out!
It'll last me a year
Eh, I'm just about to have some beef for lunch
One soap a year is pretty good compared to those crappy aerosol cans.
I want beef now. 😦
Proper lunches is one of the many perks of WFH 😄
Yup
I have so many meetings the last few weeks I don't have time for proper lunches 🤣
next week is 3 days of Prince2 remote training + exam though
Meetings? What are they?
and the week after I'll be flying out one day to install a few PB of storage and then upgrade 700 servers from home the next three days
We've been trialling a new cycle thing at work. No 2 week sprints... we do 6 weeks instead. First week is planning and we cram in all the meetings. 4 weeks for implementation where we get left alone. Last week is for review or firebreak type projects.
It's been really great going 5 weeks without talking to BA's 😄
Well I gotta be professional sometimes...
5 weeks of sarcasm, 1 week of mature mono.
I'm just a cunt every day
except when my daughter wants something 🤣
Just 40 days of paternity leave left I need to cram in before the summer 🤔
gotta squeeze out another crotch goblin so I get 40 new weeks
You make it sound like your role is difficult.
Actually it kinda is
I have needles probed into my testicles, it's not very hard, but it's not very comfortable 🤣
🤢

Very good btw
Wow getting stuff AD integrated with linux is so hella lot easier these days than a decade ago
I love the fact that because I have so many tabs open with my email now that I get 9 pings for every mail that comes in
For anyone interested in doing a simple AD integration with automatic creation of homedirs on RHEL it is just this
https://hatebin.com/ggwdabnnru
Nice
That was all
I was shocked
Last time I did it I had to config 8 config files, summon the antichrist and give up four faetuses
i am too ...you said you loved something ...maybe there is hope
I love you too vas
awwww
Transatlantic's live concert from London.
Once covid is over I need to book something in Shepherds bush
I've seen so many concerts from there I'm practically homecozy
my imagination is running wild of you being in a bush of a shepherd and watching a concert....just saying
cute puppy
i am good with that
somehow that logo looks awefully familiar
@clear ferry a decade ago I used a commercial product to use AD users in centos 5, this is wild
and now I can't even remember what it's called, which is surprising considering how much time I spent cursing at it and writting chef cookbooks for it
Hi, how long should a supervisor update take on a rpi4? Clicked on update 4.18 about 30 minutes ago and ha unreachable ever since 😟
@bitter moat Not sure which install you're using? If you have system_health enabled you can check Configuration -> Info, or see the following.
-
If you're using HassOS, flashed an image, or booted a VM with an image you're using #330990055533576204
-
If you installed Linux and then ran a script to install HA and have add-ons then you have #330944238910963714
-
If you're running
dockercommands or use a Docker manager and have no add-ons then you have #449717345808547842 -
Finally, if you use
pipto install or upgrade you have #551864459891703809
Having difficulty chosing an install method? See this blog post for guidance.
You should also read the channel topics 😉
Tink beat me to it
Thanks, I feel a bit lost in here to be honest!
That's ok, we have a map
The map is downstairs, in the basement. The stairs are missing, the light doesn't work, and there may or may not be a hungry big cat down there
I've been using home assistant for years and love it but it's getting harder to keep up with all the changes, even though they are making it more awesome
Even with the releases slowing down to only every three weeks, it's still a fast paced thing
Anyway I am not even sure from that list what I use 🤪
Clicked on update 4.18
That sounds like #330990055533576204 maybe
-> Info tells you
No when I say unreachable I mean it! I cannot SSH in or anything, I think it has borked my install
Then I'd guess you updated the OS, and #330990055533576204 is for you
I'm starting my fresh install now, weee
waiting for it to come back online after the datactl so I can stare at 100 badges
🎉
It only took me 20 minutes to find the sd card to usb and only 15 minutes to find a thumb drive
only 15 minutes for the pi power adapters
I didn't organize very well when moving
also, I have destroyed the storage room.
wires and boxes everywhere now.
SD card 🤢
lol, just for boot partition.
I'm waiting for 5 to be stable because I don't like adventure with HA
so a SSD would be the preferred method for a Pi over the SD card? (better performance and reliability with corruption on the SD card)
Yes
Pi 🤢
Nobody wants to buy those
@clear ferry it was a start and has been doing well so far. I'd like to move to something more powerful in the future
I run a bunch of Pis 😉
HA ran for 2.5 years on one
If you know what you're doing, they're fine
Yeah, but you also know what you're doing - and have access to decent hardware 😄
I imagine future pis will have m.2 or eMMC and that will be fresh but the boot from USB will be fine for now.
not sure if I should write here or somewhere else..
I have a home assistant server on my raspberry pi.
And I have the companion app to my mobile.
Can I also have a companion app for my other raspberry pi?
Not another instance.BUT just a client (to have voice assistant not only from my living room but from bedroom too..)
upgraded my OS from the 32 to the 64 bit. LOVE the VS Code add-on. And it's one of the topics for the conference (VS Code yaml like a pro)
.topic @craggy dune 😉
@craggy dune There's no support for Home Assistant here - please look at the other channels for that.
No politics, religion, or any other obviously contentious topics! Please ensure you've read the Code of Conduct (https://www.home-assistant.io/code_of_conduct/), and #rules.

I'd ask over in #general-archived
thanks so much!New to discord, new to homeassistant..still trying to figure out everything..
Anyone have any recommendations on a robot vacuum that works well with HA? There seem to be a ton of sale for Black Friday
Roborock, but also #hardware-archived
And search the history, because that's asked weekly
thanks, I'll take a look
And look up, because someone else was just told not to ask support questions here 🤣
Northen Lights in Norway - https://v.redd.it/nd8cpxc3zk161
I should really get around to getting usb boot setup on my pi
to stay up or not to stay up waiting for the black friday sales
@deft pewter I didn't know. But this time I sort of have a thing I want to buy
I know what face @clear ferry would make if he knew the product tho 😄
My best Black Friday deal was a discount on good Whisky 😄
That's nice, they'd never have discounts on alcohol here 😦
Of course atx will pull a face. He doesn't buy butt plugs, he 3D prints them.
@clear ferry what's you're view of Ubiquiti dream machine?
I see pandas, pandas aprove
Did someone say (trash) pandas? @last cedar
Think just normal boring pandas :(
😦
Yeah, sad
Anyone remember this
Hard to believe this little JAG spinoff is still going
i stopped watching like > 10 years ago
NCIS? It's decent.
Who is a phone geek here? $600 for the OnePlus 8T or $500 for the Pixel 5?
I'd normally go for the OnePlus but they're been cranking their prices up each year.
They were an amazing choice as the underdog. Now they want to compete with the flagship handsets at almost flagship prices.
8T has 865 processor vs 765 on P5. Faster storage speed, quick charge, and a slightly larger screen and battery.
Sounds like you've decided 😉
I did. I'm going with the P5. I realized that there are features I'd miss with the Pixel that I can't stray away from. I just wish I could have a 1+ to hold onto for a few days to really test them both.
Hello! Not super specific to HA so I hope it's ok to ask here, but I'm looking for an HDMI switch to connect to my TV. I'm moving to a soundbar and need a switch to manage all my devices. Looking for 5-8 ports. Any good suggestions?
Lol thanks but just need a switch
How many inputs does your soundbar
You could compromise and get a small switch to put all your consoles on
Since when you use consoles you'll be at the tv anyways
Then put the rest of your gear on the other inputs
That'll give you 7 devices on a 4 port sound bar
Or 4 port TV, but you'd lose one for ARC
@ocean arrow is that your max budget?
I cant decide if i should have RGB or not in my porch lighs, thoughts?
If you want it tacky go with RGB, otherwise don't.
I mean it could be useful if you have parties often
"My house is the one with the Green Light at the front"
And maybe halloween etc
Other than that probably not. Simple strobing is good enough if you want doorbell feedback,
Personally I don't use any of the RGB features in my globes inside
I use colour at Halloween, and pragmatically that's about it
I do have a handful of lights that are RGBW and I can turn colours, but other than maybe turning them red for nightlights I don't bother. I could get very similar results from dim warm white though
I use RGB lights for some shifting: In the late evenings I like my lights to shift a bit more to red/yellow rather than just dimming the brightness..... It's nice if you don't like bright lights
CCT FTW 😉
Then you can use the new Adaptive Lighting integration (or Circadian lighting) and have a white that shifts from cool white to warm white as the sun moves
Most of the lights that use RGB in my house are indirect, by lighting up against the walls behind closets and under tables and couches you can create a very nice effect
The only thing I can recommend is never to use more than 3 total and preferably not even more than 2 colors from RGB lights: More colors quickly gets distracting (and it looks like a funpark)
mega pozzz
I just realized the way posh British people say issues is almost as funny as how Swedes pronounce human
I've got a bunch of Philips "Warm Glow" LED bulbs on smart dimmers, it's great because when they go below ~50% brightness, it flips from like 3000k to 2700k which is a nice effect
while also getting dimmer obvs
I've seen those, interesting but I just use CT bulbs for everything that adjust all day
ARRGH! F@#%ing Windows 10. Updating failing? Ok sfc /scannow. Huh, that's not working either. No worries, let's try DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth oh ffs that fails too. Now what? Reinstall from 5000km away or hope that it keeps working for 4 more months until I can get home?
@spice grove no support for Home Assistant in the lounge (read the topic).
Sorry Tom - Never used Discord but realised I can click the title for the topic - I’ve added I think to the correct area 👍🏼
Why it be like this though?
Automation sucks to debug sometimes, I don’t understand why I’m getting differently coloured lights
Fixed it, some old scene automations overriding the circadian lighting...
You guys ever think about ripping your entire system out and going back to basics? Today is one of those days for me. I need home automation counselling 😅
Hey guys— can I get some opinions on lighting with home assistant? I’m sort of losing my mind on what the best and most cost effective (without sacrificing) method of handing lighting is...
-
hue bulbs. + Standard Switches + Motion detectors — can have classy motion but need to not hit light switches.
-
Regular bulbs (to keep costs similarish) with zwave smart switches (inovelli, Ge, etc) and motion sensors — we can use the switches on the wall and still use motion sensing.
-
taking out a high interest loan with a loan shark, buying Lutron Caseta switches for the home... probably doing motion detectors as well since they are so cheap (wyze)
Does anyone have any thoughts?
Smart switches > smart bulbs
You’ll almost always run into frustrations with smart bulbs and regular switches
This is really more a chat for #hardware-archived though, but
- Smart switches will last longer
- People know how to work switches, they don't need an app for lighting
- See (2)
Or tape on your dumb switches 🤢
I have both smart switches and smart bulbs, completely unnecessary, but the switches came after because of the frustrations
haven't run into any issues with my yeelights on dumb switches tbh
Turn it off at the switch, then try automating it 😉
but then again I live alone so I don't have the issue of family pressing on those switches
yeah I just don't turn it off
The pain is real
when I start living with someone else I'll totally invest in smart switches simply so I wouldn't have to deal with other people pressing on them and disabling the lights
right now I can only blame myself when the lights are off and that's good
Oh god. Someone in the forum is asking how to update from v0.65 😩
Start again!
Yeah that's what I advised. Also back to windows being utter shite. The media creation tool failed because I have English(Australian) and the only option in the tool was English(UK )
Solid I’ll go into #hardware-archived — is circadian lighting and the hue setup in general not worth it then? I always assumed circadian and hue was like the creme de la creme (bulb de la bulb) setup?
That way you've got smart switches/dimmers and dumb bulbs that get warmer as they dim
I've got smart bulbs everywhere but have plans to put in smart switches (with the load disconnected) so my Luddite house sitters can control them.
kek
But in the same boat as you Q. I have no issue with them. I never have to touch a light switch. Its all automated.
I've been doing Lutron Casetta as I've got extra cash
to the uninformed user, there's no difference
haven't touched mine in months
and like there's no reason to replace all the switches at once
Got some good deals on Aus approved Shelly 1s today 3 for the price of 2.
I just wish they went on sale more often
the only switch I still operate manually is the one in the bathroom since it's also wired to the fan
the best part about Caseta IMO is the pico switches
I use HA to "wire" all my lamp based smart bulbs up to pico switches mounted on the wall so literally every smart light can also be also controlled by a switch
because that's what normal people expect, being able to turn lights on and off with a switch
plus at $65 CAD for the switch alone or $69 CAD for switch+pico it's a no brainer and I've got some extra picos hanging around
@inner vault @young sigil and @midnight adder
So are y’all using motion sensors or what? If you don’t really touch peasant light switches anymore?
motion sensors, voice control and time-based stuff
the picos at $4 are "cheaper" than any other smart switches and look just like regular wall switches
I do presense based automation and time, motion sensors are hard to get right, so I don't bother trying
Motion, time, lux sensors and other presence (like my alarm being on or off, bed sensor, etc...).
there's nothing more frustrating than motion sensor turning off the light on you because you didn't move
I use a motion sensor outside in combination with door sensors to turn on the lights when I get home
I do have to do a dance in the kitchen to turn the lights back on now and then when standing by the stove to stir something.
"was there motion at the door from outside and then did the door open" if the lights are off, turn them on
that way the lights don't turn on when I'm leaving the house
they also turn off automaticallty when neither my wife or I are home
I should add a power (kW) condition to stop that.
I have a temperature sensor above the stove that indicates if the stove is in use or not, that together with a motion sensor above the door activates the lights in my kitchen and keeps it on
but only if the sun is down
So do you guys just turn on all the lights in the house once you get home?
Nope.
