@deft pewter Out of all the crap on TikTok... that was pretty funny

#

I've never actually logged into TikTok. I let Reddit filter it for me...

deft pewter
#

I just don't get memes. The whole internet is full of people who think they're funny... the vast majority aren't.

#

And TikTok... it's all one giant meme. Just a bunch of people creating short musical/dance skits.

Or, in this case, documenting OSHA violations to song. lol

Yes... musical.

subtle pasture

They still require SMBv1 for something? O.o

hearty depot
#

Last I checked, but that was on the Austrian launch. Where looking at the speakers with disgust.

subtle pasture
#

Just looked into it... yup, if you want a Sonos speaker to access a file share directly, it only works with SMBv1 shares

#

Which might as well read "SMB shares are not supported, because nobody is running that protocol version anymore"

#

Luckily they support DLNA, so you can push media to them from any DLNA server (such as Plex)

clear ferry
#

I don't do that though

#

I just do spotify connect

Yeah, it's a sonos, there are tons of app integrations

How many ethernet ports are you all running at home

#

I'm weighing up getting a 24 port switch but I don't think it'll cut it when I actually run my own cabling

clever mortar
#

more

subtle pasture
#

Two 10-port switches, a 28 port switch, and an 8-port switch. Also one additional 8-port switch for LAN parties.

clever mortar
#

I've got 16 ports in the office (currently doubling as my server room), a couple of 8 ports (one of which could be a 4 port), and a couple of 6 port ones

hushed basalt
#

I like the idea of having no switchces outside the rack

#

even if that means running 4 cables to a TV point

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, can't really help that with how my house is wired. All the ethernet drops terminate in a cabinet (far away from the server rack)

hushed basalt
#

But the Mikrotik 48port POE is about $1300 AUD

subtle pasture
#

So there's always going to have to be a separate switch in that cabinet

clever mortar
#

Yeah, even if I ever get around to proper wiring, I'll end up with some switches around

subtle pasture
#

And I have 2-port LAGs everywhere, so that's nice 😛

clever mortar
#

If I can persuade the better half I'll be aiming for at least 2 ports to each room, and more in many cases

#

Trouble is, still doesn't help where there's half a dozen devices that have a network port 😄

hushed basalt
#

I did the math on what I'd end up doing in a 4 bedroom + games room house

subtle pasture
#

If you're after decent cheap switches, take a look at Cisco SG200 / SG250 (L2), or Cisco SG300 / SG350 (L3) series switches

hushed basalt
#

'Office' as bedroom 4

subtle pasture
#

Full managed, L2 and L3 switches, usually for less than $200

hushed basalt
#

You'll set off @clear ferry if you say cisco

subtle pasture
#

I mean, they're not Catalyst series switches, they're small-business switches

#

So you get a cushy webadmin

hushed basalt
#

But yeah I think a 24 port would fill out very quickly,

#

I'll have to do some more thinking

#

My crappy netgear 8 port died so I'm down to just router ports now 😄

subtle pasture
clever mortar
#

Get a 24 port with a couple of 10 Gb uplinks 😛

clear ferry
#

Cisco small business 🤢

#

Linksys crap

clever mortar
#

Yeah, but it could be worse... it could be Ubnt 😛

subtle pasture
#

@clear ferry The SG series existed before Cisco purchased Linksys...

clear ferry
#

Yeah, but linksys got merged into it

subtle pasture
#

It literally can't be rebranded Linksys hardware

clear ferry
#

sure it can, some of them are afaik

#

it was subsumed into the product branch

subtle pasture
#

Pretty sure that only applies to the really low-end G200-08

clear ferry
#

Might be, but it is still the case then 😛

subtle pasture
#

Which is still a handy managed switch, but it is more limited than the other SG200 switches with more ports

#

Also, Cisco discontinued the 8-port SG200 in favor of a 10-port SG250, which also isn't Linksys based, because it came out after Cisco sold Linksys.

clear ferry
#

You can get a Catalyst 2960(x) for 40ish dollars though, that'll do L2 and L3 and be powerful enough for most

#

I have a few of those laying around here

#

15 years old, but hey, it'll kick most consumer stuff these days anyway

subtle pasture
#

15 years old, no firmware updates, and not many people like to rummage through conf files to configure their switches

clear ferry
#

gui config 🤢

subtle pasture
#

Oh, and you better stock up on CF cards to store config backups. lol

clear ferry
#

you nasty

subtle pasture
#

Centrally managed GUI config. The SG switches all support Cisco FindIT 😛

clear ferry
#

🤢

subtle pasture
#

Make the sick face all you want, I can drop an SG-series switch on my network and my FindIT Probe will auto-provision it with credentials, NTP server, VLANs, SNMP config, SYSLOG server, firmware updates, config backups, etc.

clear ferry
#

I'll pass

subtle pasture
#

If you have a FindIT probe on your network, a unconfigured (or freshly factory reset) switch will auto-provision. It's pretty sweet.

clear ferry
#

I might do IMC autoprovision with Comware, but only if we are talking... 25000 port scale

#

🤣

subtle pasture
#

You do you, I guess. I like the auto-config. I swapped out an SG300-10 for an SG300-28 and I literally didn't have to do anything.

#

Pulled my VLANs, started logging to my log server, SNMP community matched and was picked up by Observium, etc.

clear ferry
#

You still have to do the physical cabling, transferring the config or redoing the config adds 5 minutes local onsite

subtle pasture
#

There wasn't any config to transfer, it was automatic

clear ferry
#

when it works yes

hushed basalt
#

A used HP switch could be an option

subtle pasture
#

Switch was auto-assigned a configuration group based on the port it was connected to on the upstream switch, so everything was automatic.

The SG250 now has L2/L3

how much does the 88" weigh?

$2300USD 🙂 Was a good buy

orchid rose
#

Depends on the wall, but 50-60kg 100" sounds pretty great

clear ferry
#

Who said anything about taking anything out @quartz ether 😉

#

yeah, my wall can easily handle that, but our building codes are probably better than some other countries with their drywall shit 🤣

orchid rose
#

Yeah I have some of those and it's not something I would be comfortable installing a 30k€ tv on 😄

quartz ether
#

I think I put 8 tech screws in that were each rated for like 50% of the tv's weight and the bracket I used was rated for a 110" tv and 3x the weight of the tv

orchid rose
#

hehe

forest edge
#

drywall shit huh? you mud huts people just think throwing poo on the wall and letting it dry is the best there ever was

clear ferry

I mounted two pieces of wood on my wall across two construction pieces inside the wall (norwegian code is 50cm apart) and mounted my swivel mounted 65" to those two bars

forest edge
#

I have an old not-so-flat 42" hanging in this room on just two studs. tv weighs a ton lol

clear ferry

My 50" plasma weighs a fair bit

green inlet

I have a 75” and really can’t imagine wanting more.

#

It over takes the room.

#

Pretty common these days for builders to put 1/2” ply for the obvious place your tv will mount

quartz ether
#

Our media room cant fit anything bigger than a 65. So the 85 is in the less formal lounge.

green inlet
#

Along with an outlet an Ethernet ports

quartz ether
#

It should be way more common. It makes way more sense

green inlet
#

I think my 75” has about 3” of wall on either side

clear ferry
#

yeah, my collegue had a house built last year, they put ethernet ports in every room, to a central rack in the basement

#

apparently the norm now

green inlet
#

I have an “network closet” in my house with all cables pulled to it. It is small, and in the laundry room, but it works.

#

Pulling more cable in a two story house is difficult without tearing things up anyway.

clear ferry
#

the norm here is becoming more and more 3-4 story houses though, which makes the central rack quite a good idea imo

quartz ether
#

i converted the phone jacks since they ran 4 pair cat5e

orchid rose
#

I always wonder if people are just scared to try a bigger TV or if they just can't physically fit it in the room when they say they can't get a bigger one

#

I've heard the same line since TV's got bigger than 32"

clear ferry
#

and in most modern houses they put in extra cable tubes and you have drawings of the building and cable tubes so you can install new ports and power later

#

which is nice

#

since landlines haven't been sold in 10 years, and cable tv is dying for over a decade the only things you need inside a house is power and ethernet

green inlet
#

Mounting mine took 3 of us 😉. I would prefer better technology over size. I purchased mine in 2015 so probably already outdated

#

I always laugh when I go to the recycle place here. The TV section is always piled high. When we moved in 2015, I could barely find someone to take my rear projection TV 🤣. Obviously very outdated at the time but it still had a great picture. TVs are pretty much disposable these days

orchid rose
#

I don't think the tech has advanced that much since 2015 tbh

forest edge
#

there is some benefits to not going huge tv right off the bat. when you get older and retire you can more affordably get a bigger tvv and renew the wow factor without needing to take down some walls to make it fit

orchid rose
#

interesting viewpoint, but by that time I'm sure we'll have some new tech to blow our minds

forest edge

Hybrid cloud is fine, as long as not a single service only lives in the cloud

subtle pasture
#

@clever mortar Yeah, it's easy to get near 100% uptime with the cloud, you just multi-home on both Azure and AWS

#

The odds of both being down at the same time are very, very low

clear ferry
#

If your wan is down both are down, customers can mostly work fine locally without wan for days

subtle pasture
#

if WAN is down we can't work anyway

clear ferry
#

Just by using dark fiber between sites

#

That is a you problem though

subtle pasture
#

That's an MSP problem...

#

if WAN is down, we don't have email, tickets, or phone calls coming in

last cedar
#

Smoke signals

subtle pasture
#

No tickets coming in? Not much work getting done.

last cedar
#

clear ferry
subtle pasture
#

We have redundant WAN, but an upstream fiber cut in the wrong spot can take both down (found that out last year when a backhoe dug up some fiber out in the countryside)

clear ferry
#

That's why you don't order fiber from two vendors

subtle pasture
#

We didn't, lol

#

One is Comcast Cable, the other is AT&T Fiber

#

They both eventually connect to Level 3's backbone, which is what got cut

#

All ISPs south of the cut went down for several hours

clear ferry
#

But then you ordered from two different ones 🧐

subtle pasture
#

Yes, that's what I said...

clear ferry
subtle pasture
#

Two different ISP. One cable, the other fiber. They both, eventually, connect to Level 3's network

#

And Level 3's fiber is what got cut

clear ferry
#

Yes, you order redundant lines from the same vendor

subtle pasture
#

You said "don't order fiber from two vendors"
We didn't order FIBER from two different vendors. We ordered Fiber and Cable.

clear ferry
#

But maybe American isps don't offer that

subtle pasture
#

We used two vendors, not one...

#

Comcast and AT&T

clear ferry
#

🧐

subtle pasture
#

I've said it 3 times now. lol

clear ferry
#

Don't order redundant lines from different vendors

#

Better?

subtle pasture
#

if they're two lines from the same vendor, it's not really redundant... because they'll both go down for sure...

#

So yeah, we ordered two WAN connections, from different vendors, for redundancy

clear ferry
#

Yes it is, because they have two different routing paths

#

We do that here

#

Every vendor has atleast two different cable paths from one side of the country to the other

subtle pasture
#

If we order AT&T Fiber twice, we just get two connections to the same distribution panel. lol

#

Zero real redundancy

clear ferry
#

Nothing touches the same panels here

night zodiac
#

everything here is the same copper for hundreds of miles until about 5 years ago when a new company ran new fiber

clever mortar
#

You also get the fun where you get redundant providers, but through the same physical location at one point

night zodiac
#

both of the big companies would always be down at the same time

clever mortar
#

This is where it pays to have good relationships with people who know what really does on

night zodiac
#

we were working IT debating if we should get another line but it was pointless at the time

subtle pasture
#

@clever mortar That's basically the nightmare scenario we wound up in. Fiber was cut, but it was the fiber that was feeding pretty much every ISP in the California central valley

#

I thought I was being smart doing that. I had one with a smiley type face for home and a frown face for guest. On some of the kids devices, it didn't work so well. Ended up ditching it recently for a more normal name

#

Some devices, it was just blocks

#

Yeah I remember it straight up crashing my Xbox 360 at the time

#

They have more nintendo stuff. I don't know if it was the 3DS or the wii u that was really odd

#

The nds doesn't support it either but rather just shows random kanji

Actually, I don't even think the 3DS connects with WPA2 properly

#

I mean to be fair does any Nintendo product have proper networking?

#

They have yet to release a single console with native ethernet lol

#

It's all crappy dongles

#

i have to do a static nat pfsense for their switches to join the online lobbys

#

There is some info if you're curious. not even sure if it's still an issue, but just left it in there

#

It always bothered me how there is no real way of including my Nintendo consoles in hass

#

None of em support WoL or anything like that

subtle pasture
#

@midnight adder Heh, I remember going through this to get our two Switch consoles online

#

Xbox One and PS4 can use IPv6 to avoid NAT altogether if you have native IPv6 on your network, but the Switch is the only modern console with no IPv6 network stack.

#

You can also assign the console a static DHCP lease, then enable UPnP just for that IP address, to make things really automatic.

midnight adder
#

I put all their stuff on their own vlan and I had upnp on for awhile, but never saw anything in the logs for it

#

I wish I got native ipv6. I had an he tunnel for awhile, but never put it back when I rebuilt my pfsense box

subtle pasture
#

We have two Switch consoles, so UPnP was a must

#

They dynamically assign port forwards for themselves

midnight adder
#

Huh.. maybe it depends on the game?

#

I don't see any "sessions" in pfsense for it

#

I enabled it.. just haven't seen it used

only 15 minutes for the pi power adapters

#

I didn't organize very well when moving

#

also, I have destroyed the storage room.

wires and boxes everywhere now.

SD card 🤢

night zodiac
#

lol, just for boot partition.

#

I'm waiting for 5 to be stable because I don't like adventure with HA

night mason
#

so a SSD would be the preferred method for a Pi over the SD card? (better performance and reliability with corruption on the SD card)

clever mortar
#

Yes

night zodiac
#

SD cards are bad.

#

The fact that pis are supposed to only use an SD card is a joke

Cheap 😉

#

An industrial SD card is fine

@clear ferry it was a start and has been doing well so far. I'd like to move to something more powerful in the future

I run a bunch of Pis 😉

HA ran for 2.5 years on one

#

If you know what you're doing, they're fine

clever mortar
#

Yeah, but you also know what you're doing - and have access to decent hardware 😄

night zodiac
#

I imagine future pis will have m.2 or eMMC and that will be fresh but the boot from USB will be fine for now.

not sure if I should write here or somewhere else..
I have a home assistant server on my raspberry pi.
And I have the companion app to my mobile.
Can I also have a companion app for my other raspberry pi?
Not another instance.BUT just a client (to have voice assistant not only from my living room but from bedroom too..)

@deft pewter I didn't know. But this time I sort of have a thing I want to buy

Who is a phone geek here? $600 for the OnePlus 8T or $500 for the Pixel 5?

deft pewter
#

I'd normally go for the OnePlus but they're been cranking their prices up each year.

#

They were an amazing choice as the underdog. Now they want to compete with the flagship handsets at almost flagship prices.

ocean arrow
#

8T has 865 processor vs 765 on P5. Faster storage speed, quick charge, and a slightly larger screen and battery.

deft pewter
#

Sounds like you've decided 😉

ocean arrow

I did. I'm going with the P5. I realized that there are features I'd miss with the Pixel that I can't stray away from. I just wish I could have a 1+ to hold onto for a few days to really test them both.

Hello! Not super specific to HA so I hope it's ok to ask here, but I'm looking for an HDMI switch to connect to my TV. I'm moving to a soundbar and need a switch to manage all my devices. Looking for 5-8 ports. Any good suggestions?

dull chasm
#

has 8

#

plus @glacial reef it has a remote

glacial reef
hushed basalt
#

How many inputs does your soundbar

#

You could compromise and get a small switch to put all your consoles on

#

Since when you use consoles you'll be at the tv anyways

#

Then put the rest of your gear on the other inputs

#

That'll give you 7 devices on a 4 port sound bar

#

Or 4 port TV, but you'd lose one for ARC

brazen fable
#

@ocean arrow is that your max budget?

#

I cant decide if i should have RGB or not in my porch lighs, thoughts?

young citrus
#

If you want it tacky go with RGB, otherwise don't.

hushed basalt
#

I mean it could be useful if you have parties often

#

"My house is the one with the Green Light at the front"

#

And maybe halloween etc

#

Other than that probably not. Simple strobing is good enough if you want doorbell feedback,

#

Personally I don't use any of the RGB features in my globes inside

clever mortar
#

I use colour at Halloween, and pragmatically that's about it

#

I do have a handful of lights that are RGBW and I can turn colours, but other than maybe turning them red for nightlights I don't bother. I could get very similar results from dim warm white though

fathom haven
#

I use RGB lights for some shifting: In the late evenings I like my lights to shift a bit more to red/yellow rather than just dimming the brightness..... It's nice if you don't like bright lights

clever mortar
#

CCT FTW 😉

#

Then you can use the new Adaptive Lighting integration (or Circadian lighting) and have a white that shifts from cool white to warm white as the sun moves

fathom haven
#

Most of the lights that use RGB in my house are indirect, by lighting up against the walls behind closets and under tables and couches you can create a very nice effect

#

The only thing I can recommend is never to use more than 3 total and preferably not even more than 2 colors from RGB lights: More colors quickly gets distracting (and it looks like a funpark)

I've got a bunch of Philips "Warm Glow" LED bulbs on smart dimmers, it's great because when they go below ~50% brightness, it flips from like 3000k to 2700k which is a nice effect

while also getting dimmer obvs

I've seen those, interesting but I just use CT bulbs for everything that adjust all day

@spice grove no support for Home Assistant in the lounge (read the topic).

Automation sucks to debug sometimes, I don’t understand why I’m getting differently coloured lights

#

Fixed it, some old scene automations overriding the circadian lighting...
You guys ever think about ripping your entire system out and going back to basics? Today is one of those days for me. I need home automation counselling 😅

hidden tiger
#

Hey guys— can I get some opinions on lighting with home assistant? I’m sort of losing my mind on what the best and most cost effective (without sacrificing) method of handing lighting is...

  1. hue bulbs. + Standard Switches + Motion detectors — can have classy motion but need to not hit light switches.

  2. Regular bulbs (to keep costs similarish) with zwave smart switches (inovelli, Ge, etc) and motion sensors — we can use the switches on the wall and still use motion sensing.

  3. taking out a high interest loan with a loan shark, buying Lutron Caseta switches for the home... probably doing motion detectors as well since they are so cheap (wyze)

Does anyone have any thoughts?

clever mortar
#

Smart switches > smart bulbs

spice perch
#

You’ll almost always run into frustrations with smart bulbs and regular switches

clever mortar
#

This is really more a chat for #hardware-archived though, but

  1. Smart switches will last longer
  2. People know how to work switches, they don't need an app for lighting
  3. See (2)
green inlet
#

Or tape on your dumb switches 🤢

spice perch
#

I have both smart switches and smart bulbs, completely unnecessary, but the switches came after because of the frustrations

midnight adder
#

haven't run into any issues with my yeelights on dumb switches tbh

clever mortar
#

Turn it off at the switch, then try automating it 😉

midnight adder
#

but then again I live alone so I don't have the issue of family pressing on those switches

#

yeah I just don't turn it off

green inlet
#

The pain is real

midnight adder
#

when I start living with someone else I'll totally invest in smart switches simply so I wouldn't have to deal with other people pressing on them and disabling the lights

#

right now I can only blame myself when the lights are off and that's good

young sigil
#

Oh god. Someone in the forum is asking how to update from v0.65 😩

young sigil

Yeah that's what I advised. Also back to windows being utter shite. The media creation tool failed because I have English(Australian) and the only option in the tool was English(UK )

hidden tiger
#

Solid I’ll go into #hardware-archived — is circadian lighting and the hue setup in general not worth it then? I always assumed circadian and hue was like the creme de la creme (bulb de la bulb) setup?

clever mortar
#

That way you've got smart switches/dimmers and dumb bulbs that get warmer as they dim

young sigil
#

I've got smart bulbs everywhere but have plans to put in smart switches (with the load disconnected) so my Luddite house sitters can control them.

midnight adder
#

kek

young sigil
#

But in the same boat as you Q. I have no issue with them. I never have to touch a light switch. Its all automated.

inner vault
#

I've been doing Lutron Casetta as I've got extra cash

#

to the uninformed user, there's no difference

midnight adder
#

haven't touched mine in months

inner vault
#

and like there's no reason to replace all the switches at once

young sigil
#

Got some good deals on Aus approved Shelly 1s today 3 for the price of 2.

inner vault
#

I just wish they went on sale more often

midnight adder
#

the only switch I still operate manually is the one in the bathroom since it's also wired to the fan

inner vault
#

the best part about Caseta IMO is the pico switches

#

I use HA to "wire" all my lamp based smart bulbs up to pico switches mounted on the wall so literally every smart light can also be also controlled by a switch

#

because that's what normal people expect, being able to turn lights on and off with a switch

#

plus at $65 CAD for the switch alone or $69 CAD for switch+pico it's a no brainer and I've got some extra picos hanging around

hidden tiger
#

@inner vault @young sigil and @midnight adder

So are y’all using motion sensors or what? If you don’t really touch peasant light switches anymore?

midnight adder
#

motion sensors, voice control and time-based stuff

inner vault
#

the picos at $4 are "cheaper" than any other smart switches and look just like regular wall switches

#

I do presense based automation and time, motion sensors are hard to get right, so I don't bother trying

young sigil
#

Motion, time, lux sensors and other presence (like my alarm being on or off, bed sensor, etc...).

inner vault
#

there's nothing more frustrating than motion sensor turning off the light on you because you didn't move

#

I use a motion sensor outside in combination with door sensors to turn on the lights when I get home

young sigil
#

I do have to do a dance in the kitchen to turn the lights back on now and then when standing by the stove to stir something.

inner vault
#

"was there motion at the door from outside and then did the door open" if the lights are off, turn them on

#

that way the lights don't turn on when I'm leaving the house

#

they also turn off automaticallty when neither my wife or I are home

young sigil
#

I should add a power (kW) condition to stop that.

midnight adder
#

I have a temperature sensor above the stove that indicates if the stove is in use or not, that together with a motion sensor above the door activates the lights in my kitchen and keeps it on

#

but only if the sun is down

hidden tiger
#

So do you guys just turn on all the lights in the house once you get home?

young sigil
#

Nope.
