I really only stopped using it because Philips sold the rights to Ambx to Madcatz, who never updated the divers again...

#

I have plenty of screen space... 5760x1200

orchid rose
#

That's resolution, not area though

#

We all have to make compromises, I know I do. But I don't think anyone would choose ambilight over a bigger screen

subtle pasture
#

777 inches^2

#

That's a lot of area...

deft pewter
#

777 inches by 777 inches? That's some weird ass pixel density.

subtle pasture
#

I didn't say that...

#

You said area, I gave you total area...

deft pewter
#

I'm just messing. I'm used to seeing/hearing 'square inches'.

subtle pasture
#

66" wide x 14" tall

#

Approximately

deft pewter
#

That's a lot of girth

subtle pasture
#

Triple 24" (16:10) monitors, baby

#

3x Dell U2412M

orchid rose
#

That's a lot smaller than my 92" projector screen which honestly is at least 30" too small

clear ferry
#

Triple 24, I've had that for 15 years, had two more screens at some point

#

Miss them now

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, I'm not about to replace my monitors with a projector...

orchid rose
#

I'm not trying to claim that Leapo

light trout

Why not?

#

At most I had 3x24" crt + 17"crt + 15" crt + projector

Back in.... 2006

#

@light trout Because I wouldn't be able to see shit 75% of the time due to light pollution

light trout
#

Turn off the light

orchid rose
#

I thought about going 3xU2412M actually, but in the end ended up with a 21:9 display mostly because of 144Hz vs 60Hz and I'm pretty happy with it

subtle pasture
#

I'm not reconfiguring the house for an absurd display technology, lol

deft pewter
#

Projectors seem neat for movies but not for desk equipment.

light trout
#

Sounds like a fun project 😄

clear ferry
#

@deft pewter still remember when shitkids would bring their 32" LCDs to LAN parties

orchid rose
#

Projectors are awful for desk environment. Even news and stuff are annoying

clear ferry
#

As a single screen

deft pewter
#

Split screen gaming? 🤢

clear ferry
#

Not even

subtle pasture
#

Triple-screen gaming > Dual-screen gaming

#

It's really hard to play anything with a split right down the middle

clear ferry
#

I started with triple screen in 2001 I think

orchid rose
#

Dual screens are great for work stuff though

#

for gaming triple is just so much better

clear ferry
#

Triple or quad is great for work

orchid rose
#

Yeah but you can do stuff with two screens just fine as well

#

with gaming you'll have the split right in the middle which makes it painful

scenic radish
#

Yeah I get by just fine with dual monitors for work

subtle pasture
#

I have triple-1080p screens at work, and it's such a huge downgrade from triple-1200p...

orchid rose
#

16:10 is pretty good for non-entertainment stuff

subtle pasture
#

I mean, you always have the option of running 1920x1080 on a 1200p panel

orchid rose
#

Sure but black bars are worse than black borders

subtle pasture
#

You just get letterboxing, but no loss of resolution vs. the original 1080p picture

#

I'd rather have black bars for 1080p content than a smaller monitor ALWAYS

orchid rose
#

I'll disagree on that

subtle pasture
#

Why wouldn't you want an extra 120 vertical pixels? lol

orchid rose
#

If I'm not using it? Because it actually isn't black

subtle pasture
#

Also, hot take: 16:10 was designed to minimize black bars

brazen root
#

Any SQL-gurus here? I have a quick question.

I have a Table with MenuItems and MenuCalories. I want to select every row where MenuItems contains the word "cheese", and insert them in the table again with MenuCalories * 1.5

subtle pasture
#

16:10 is an average of all common TV and film aspect ratios, designed to produce the smallest black bars for all of them

orchid rose
#

Now that's a very hot take. I know where you're going with it but nowadays it's not really the case

deft pewter
#

21:9 here... there's a lot of movies produced in that aspect ratio now.

#

And for the ones that aren't... black bars aren't a big deal.

#

I can always put the show to one side and still have room for a browser.

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, I don't mind the black bars, they're unavoidable

orchid rose
#

They are avoidable in most scenarios on a PC

subtle pasture
#

You're not going to get 100% of content in the exact aspect ratio of your display

deft pewter
#

I'd rather have vertical letterboxing over horizontal. Horizontal stops you using the space for anything else.

#

Imagine watching a 21:9 movie on a 4:3 🤣

subtle pasture
#

@deft pewter I disagree, it's great running 16:9 content on a 16:10 monitor

#

I get full access to the taskbar and titlebar without scaling or overlapping the picture

deft pewter
#

But no other applications on screen

subtle pasture
#

I do a lot of remote desktop, so factor that in

deft pewter
#

Haha, yes. I love sharing my screen with my team... they have to squint to see anything.

subtle pasture
#

Remoting into a machine with a 16:9 monitor is great with a 16:10 monitor

orchid rose
#

It depends on what you do/consume

subtle pasture
#

Remoting into a machine with a 16:9 monitor is painful with a 16:9 monitor

orchid rose
#

Games are great at 21:9 as are most movies. Sports are pretty awful and for desktop use you'll want to use a split screen to get the most out of it

deft pewter
#

It depends on what you do/consume
Developer. I have my IDE taking up two thirds (with terminals and stuff taking up some of that room) and comms/documentation taking up the remaining third.

subtle pasture
#

Dev work? Give me 16:10

#

I want the extra vertical real-estate

orchid rose
#

On 16:10 it's the opposite. All software is pretty damn great full screen 16:9 stuff works but games and movies are meh at best

deft pewter
#

1440 pixels isn't enough vertical? 😄

subtle pasture
#

I've had no issues with games or movies on 16:10?

orchid rose
#

All I can say is that I wouldn't go back to the 16:10 for those

subtle pasture
#

Most games support 1920x1200 without issue, and 1920x1080 is always an option (with no scaling)

orchid rose
#

They do, but the wider aspect ratio is massively helpful

subtle pasture
#

enables Nvidia Surround and games at 5760x1200

#

48:10 master race

orchid rose
#

That's your wider aspect ratio then. I thought about that too but 60Hz felt a little low for 2020

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, I keep waiting for a decent ultrawide I could use as a replacement

orchid rose
#

DWUXGA 👀

subtle pasture
#

e'yup, it's 3840x1200 (dual 1920x1200)

orchid rose
#

1440p might be worth it nowadays for gaming though

subtle pasture
#

I've had trouble finding a comparable 1440p ultrawide

orchid rose
#

or even 2160p if you have unlimited budget

deft pewter
subtle pasture
#

That Lenovo is the smallest I'll go, lol

#

34" on an ultrawide is tiny

deft pewter
#

Although I bought it for the built-in KVM more than the other features.

#

Tiny? I still have to turn my head :/

orchid rose
#

tiny head

deft pewter
#

🤏

subtle pasture
#

The Lenovo is exactly the size of two of my monitors put together

#

I could actually tile two of my existing monitors above the Lenovo, and everything would line up if not for the bezels

orchid rose
#

It's not yuge. A 30" 16:9 or so has the same area iirc

#

I love it though, but the curve kinda sucks on desktop use

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, I don't like the curve either

orchid rose
#

It's great for games and movies, it really surprised me

subtle pasture
#

"Remember how we tried so hard to make flat-tube CRT monitors to improve screen geometry? Well fuck all that! Back to curved glass!"

orchid rose
#

Just give me the movement clarity of a CRT and I promise I won't complain

subtle pasture
#

That depends on the speed of the phosphor 👀

orchid rose
#

Not just that

subtle pasture
#

Some CRTs used really slow phosphor, and would ghost like a bitch

orchid rose
#

There's the sample and hold problem as well

#

Even an oled won't be as good as a CRT unless you start flickering it

subtle pasture
#

But it lacks adaptive refresh rate support, so it's basically a non-starter in 2020

orchid rose
#

Mine has it, but it doesn't work....

orchid rose
#

More like medium oof

subtle pasture
#

The other thing I liked about the Lenovo is you can hook it up via dual-HDMI rather than single-displayport, and your OS will see two 1920x1200 monitors

#

No weird windowing software required

orchid rose
#

Not many people who need that, but I guess it can be neat

subtle pasture
#

I mean, if you want it to behave like two monitors for desktop work...

#

Which is why all of these ultrawides tend to come with window management software

#

Is it me, or is shopping ultrawide monitors kinda a nightmare? Way too many variants

clear ferry
#

🏇

subtle pasture
#

Fun fact for triple-monitor and ultrawide users: If your horizontal resolution exceeds 4096 pixels, most Quake3-engine games will insta-crash because of a framebuffer overflow.

midnight adder
#

i alo got a ultrawide monitor.. but thats just looking rediculus. I also dislike curved monitors. nice to game shit to work with anything what needs straight lines

slate marsh
#

Hmm never spotted that my left monitor is vertical maybe I just sneak under

subtle pasture
#

A single 4k 16:9 screen is still only 3840 x 2160, so not enough to break the engine

slate marsh
#

You see what you’ve done here is make me want to go back and play old games!

subtle pasture
#

I first noticed it trying to run Return to Castle Wolfenstein triple-monitor

#

You can work around the issue if you switch to ioquake / iortcw, which are based on the source released by ID, with lots of fixes and improvements (original game required)

clear ferry
#

Rtcw 4 lyfe

#

That said, the two latest games are great

I really need to check those out

Do y'all know if WD shuckables typically go on sale on Amazon during Black Friday/ Cyber Monday?

#

Typically, yeah

#

Though they've become more of a crapshoot in recent years

#

No telling if you're going to get an SMR drive or not

#

And no telling if you'll get a Red or a White drive

amber bramble
#

i hope they do, i need a couple more 8tb drives for my nas

grave hill
#

Can anyone give me a hint how to use the emergency console?

scenic radish
subtle pasture
#

@amber bramble If you get a white label drive, you might find it won't work in your NAS unless you remove this pin

#

This happens because the white label drives use this as a reset pin, and older backplanes (made before this being a reset pin was made part of the SATA standard) just tie that pin high at 3.3v at all times

#

So the drive just resets over and over because of the outdated backplane

#

This will also happen when connecting a white label drive to a PSU that provides 3.3v power to the SATA connectors. You can either modify the drive or the SATA power connectors...

amber bramble
#

@subtle pasture yeah i've got some adapters to fix that 😃

subtle pasture
amber bramble
#

i've got 4 drives in my nas currently, but I can expand it up to 15 if i remember right

forest edge
#

when you need small buisness storage space you know you got issues

subtle pasture
#

@forest edge Plex library + system backups from computers around the house take up a lot of space...

forest edge
#

not that much space

#

if you are hording system backups then you got even more issues lol

scenic radish
#

I think ur just jealous that ur storage is 🤏

forest edge
#

it's not the size of capacity but the compression that matters

shrewd oasis
#

A movie and or tv series library takes up a lot of space. Especially when you “get” them as high res.

subtle pasture
#

12x 4TB drives there (48 TB raw capacity). I'm not even close to what the datahorder guys are up to...

forest edge
#

anything more than 10TB for a residents constitutes as an "addiction"

subtle pasture
#

You can get 16TB in a single drive bro...

forest edge
#

why get this amount when you can get this amount amirite

shrewd oasis
#

I have a kodi library and 10 tb between me and my gf goes fast with tv shows, movies, music, picture, and the smallest group documents.

forest edge

stop downloading p0rn then

subtle pasture

I don’t need p0rn. I got a girlfriend for that.

scenic radish

Your girlfriend makes porn? Sweet, where at?

subtle pasture
#

Lol

shrewd oasis
#

subtle pasture
#

But yeah, pre-recorded VR video files are gigantic. Think dual-4k video at 60 to 144 FPS

#

The bitrates are nuts

shrewd oasis
#

Didn’t have vr

#

But that does sound like it would take up space fast

#

I do use unraid for my nas so I also need the space for dockers ( which isn’t much) and vms.

#

Vm backups take up space too

subtle pasture
#

Not backing up to the nas they're running from, I hope..

shrewd oasis
#

Unfortunately yea.... but they are backups I will move to another unraid system offsite once I get it built.

#

How do you keep a backup?

#

Do you have another system right next to it or offsite?

#

Because I have a question about offsite if you are doing that

hushed basalt
subtle pasture
#

My virtualization hosts have local storage, so backing up to the NAS is a suitable backup for the VMs

#

I have some cloud backup, but only for documents and photos. Cloud storage gets expensive fast

hushed basalt
#

Especially since Google Drive unlimited got nixed

shrewd oasis
#

Mine also has local storage and I backup all of that together to the nas it’s running on

#

Only thing that’s not local storage on a vm are games which run directly from the nas to the vm.

My question is, i now have to decide whether to just use wifi all the way out there, or whether i could run the io cables in conduit i have, keeping the esp32 inside. Would the signal be ok reaching that far (30m) if kept away from other power source interference, or am i gambling too much and the cable will basically just be one big antenna picking up noise etc and causing more trouble than its worth? subtle pasture
#

@clear ferry There is no proper on the fly translator from x86 to arm either
I wouldn't say that... Windows and Linux have both had x86-on-ARM transparent emulation support for a long, long time now

#

And many ARM chips include additional instructions specifically to accelerate x86 emulation

static schooner
#

sometimes 32-bit and 64-bit differ in emulation

subtle pasture
#

My guess is Apple jointly developed an x86 emulator AND the supporting silicone to accelerate it when designing their new ARM chips, allowing for decent x86 performance for apps that don't have native ARM versions

#

One of the advantages of vertical integration/consolidation, I suppose

clear ferry
#

Really? Is there a wowarm?

subtle pasture
#

Yup!

static schooner
#

Windows on Arm has been a thing for a while

subtle pasture
#

clear ferry
#

I knew W10 introduced arm support

static schooner
#

oh 🙂

subtle pasture
#

WoW was traditionally used to allow 64bit Windows to run 32bit applications

#

But yeah, same thing exists on Windows for ARM, allowing it to run x86 applications

clear ferry
#

Without performance loss?

orchid rose
#

iirc it wasn't a huge loss, but the compatibility was limited

#

at least the last time I checked

subtle pasture
#

WoW (32bit applications on 64bit Windows)? Performance loss is very, very minimal, and compatibility is near-perfect.

clear ferry
#

Well, was thinking if wowarm or whatever they call it

subtle pasture
#

Windows for ARM was (until recently) limited to running 32bit applications. They just started supporting AMD64 emulation.

clear ferry
#

Aha

subtle pasture
#

And performance does take a hit vs. native recompilation

clear ferry
#

And amd64 is it's own mess

subtle pasture
#

AMD64 == x86_64...

clear ferry
#

Afaik amd64 and x86_64 isn't 100% compatible

#

Atleast it wasn't

#

Or whatever was emt64 at some point

It's the same thing now. Intel gave up on designing their own 64bit architecture and just runs AMD64 now

Windows 2000 never booted on alpha did it?

It did. Windows 2000 Beta 3 was the last version of Windows to run on Alpha

I need to move my printer to a protected are to print what @green inlet wanted 😝

subtle pasture
#

lol

#

@clear ferry Nothing wrong with knowing what you like

#

Also, I'm absolutely shocked nobody dropped an eggplant emoji anywhere in there

last plaza
#

🍆

subtle pasture
#

...there it is

#

omg, the first GIF that comes up when you put "eggplant" into Discord's GIF search...

clear ferry
#

I have no idea what I like, but I like almost anyone

last plaza
#

Yeah, let’s not do that. Those gifs are graphic!

subtle pasture
#

That's why I posted my reaction, and not the gif. lol

clear ferry
#

I fear no man

#

Nor eggplant

subtle pasture
#

That's a woman with an eggplant in that gif, though 🤔

clear ferry
#

Is it?

#

Isn't that presumptuous of you?

#

🥳

subtle pasture
#

lol @ calling the trans person out on assuming gender

#

So original

clear ferry
#

Thanks

subtle pasture
#

Give him a hand, everyone 👏

clear ferry
#

🏇 🏇

#

I leave you in the stables

forest edge
#

turns around and walks back out

subtle pasture
#

XD

#

(we're cool, seriously)

last plaza
#

I think discord changed their menu order with the latest update on mobile. I keep hitting wrong menu item - muscle memory!

clear ferry
#

Yep they did

subtle pasture
#

What menu changed?

last cedar
#

Not on android right? I haven't noticed any changes for a while

last plaza
forest edge
#

read somewhere discord is working on trying to implement a zoom type feature. soon we can all brady bunch one another but atx will have to be on the bottom middle because we're already use to looking down on him

scenic radish
#

Noticed that too @last plaza ... Super annoying

last plaza
#

This menu - when you click on the message.

clear ferry
forest edge
#

grats, you got clutter

last cedar
#

Are those underwater creatures?

last plaza
#

Getting ready for holidays @clear ferry I still got good old Christmas lighting. I need to switch to led lights.

last cedar
#

That I can't spell the name of

deft pewter
#

Fish?

forest edge
#

it's bacteria that has grown into various forms in his garage from years of never cleaning

#

it just looks like led lights

last cedar
#

Yes, fish. Thanks

clear ferry
#

Wow, the power supply actually has a fan

low harness
#

Well, atx. That Donald gif could have been more family friendly...

last cedar
#

Sea anemones

low harness
#

It upset my kids and, more so, my wife... so thanks a lot...

last cedar
#

Apparently

forest edge
#

upset your wife? 🤔

clear ferry
#

Did you open discord on the family TV?

low harness
#

Had it open on my computer

subtle pasture
#

@forest edge Discord already supports group video chat on servers

last cedar
#

With a 65 inch screen

subtle pasture
#

So you can do zoom-type / brady bunch meetings if you want. lol

forest edge
#

@subtle pasture it's not like zoom tho

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, it sucks less >_>

forest edge
#

i meant the layout

#

So you can do zoom-type / brady bunch meetings if you want. lol
@subtle pasture hmm? this is new cause I messed with it a bit ago with a friend and it didn't appaer like that

clear ferry
#

The new teams feature of every camera having a seat in a movie theater...

#

It kinda weird

last plaza
#

Apparently they (MS) are rolling out more of those modes.

#

Gallery view, together mode...etc.

deft pewter
#

Huh? What's wrong with just seeing who's currently speaking?

forest edge
#

people like to see everyone.. they miss skype

deft pewter
#

I don't like to see anyone.

forest edge
#

close your eyes?

deft pewter
#

I just leave my cam off and minimise Teams...

#

Leaves my whole desktop free to actually do some work while everyone else talks shit.

last cedar
#

I don't even like seeing myself

forest edge
#

well you do look like you just robbed a convivence store

last cedar
#

Excuse me!

#

Only with my balaclava on

#

Which reminds me.

clear ferry
#

Mmmm baklava

#

I should buy some

last cedar
low harness
#

Makes me think of the story about Rabarber-Barbara.

#

And Rabarberbarbarabarbarbarenbartbarbierbierbarbärbel.

#

The English translation is so-so, unfortunately.

subtle pasture
#

@clear ferry Wait, when did they add that to Teams? 👀

#

I gotta try that

clear ferry
#

A few weeks ago

subtle pasture
#

I need to experience this weirdness

last plaza
#

It’s been there for a while.

low harness
#

Anyone else think the unmute and camera buttons are way too close to each other in Teams?

subtle pasture
#

yes

#

Discovered that shortcoming when I was running late one morning and joined an 8:00 AM meeting from my phone while getting ready

last dirge
#

heh

low harness
#

I misclicked first time introducing myself to a new client. Glad I was decent.

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, thankfully all they got was a shot of my bathroom ceiling for a minute, because the phone was face-up on the counter

#

But that could have been bad XD

clever mortar
#

@low harness you don't have a cover on the camera? 🤣

forest edge
#

or good.. depending on the viewer..

last plaza
#

Best part for me is the ability to set custom backgrounds.

subtle pasture
#

@forest edge True, true...

#

"Onlyfans: Office Space Edition"

last plaza
#

There are some really funny backdrops we could use

clear ferry
#

So far running 300 LEDs off 5v with only power on both ends looks good

subtle pasture
clear ferry
#

Wtf

#

🤣

last dirge
#

I used the Four Seasons background earlier today

subtle pasture
#

Four Seasons Total Landscaping? 😂

clear ferry
#

I wish discord supported videos

last dirge
#

oh yeah

subtle pasture
#

It does O.o

clear ferry
#

It does?

#

Not from the camera

#

I can't film my wled setup 🤣

#

Then I have to imgur it

#

😠

subtle pasture
#

Not sure what you mean? I can attach MP4 files from my phone camera no problem

#

And they play embedded

low harness
#

You can show it in hangout

clear ferry
#

Orly, can't do it directly from the camera atleast @subtle pasture

subtle pasture
#

I just use the file-attach button inside Discord 🤷‍♀️

#

@last dirge There's already a Four Seasons VRChat world

clear ferry
#

Had to go to gallery, not directly in discord @subtle pasture

#

And not auto playing I would say

subtle pasture
#

@clear ferry That's odd that it didn't embed...

#

Nope, that works fine...

#

First random MP4 file I could find, lol

clear ferry
#

Weird

night zodiac
#

@clear ferry wutcha working on

clear ferry
#

Christmas outdoor lights

night zodiac
#

I was looking into the same last night

clear ferry
#

Have 900ish of them to hang up

night zodiac
#

are yours fancy at all or normal?

clear ferry
#

Wled ws2811

#

So fancy?

subtle pasture
#

Are those individually addressable LED Christmas lights? 👀

night zodiac
#

yeah, I was looking into individually adressable

clear ferry
#

@subtle pasture yup

subtle pasture
#

And they don't appear to flicker, woo

night zodiac
#

the girlfriend rolled her eyes when I talked about using a light strip so maybe christmassy lights will be better

subtle pasture
#

I hate cheap flickery LED Christmas lights... makes it nearly impossible to drive at night

clear ferry
#

Bought 3x350w psus

#

So I should be fine

night zodiac
#

links? lol

scenic radish
#

Embedding videos doesn't work for Norwatians @clear ferry

night zodiac
#

thanks ted 😉

forest edge
#

they will last about a week thern burn out

clear ferry
#

Ok price, I paid about $80 for 900 of them

#

From AliExpress

night zodiac
#

yeah, damn. They might be here too late 😛

forest edge
#

so the chances of catching your house on fire... 90%

night zodiac
#

I'm moving soon and the girl has always wanted a christmas tree so i got a fancy one

#

I should be able to get away with plenty of gaudy lights

#

not for the tree, but for the house

clear ferry
#

I bought fancy Christmas lights last year

forest edge
#

walmart sells that prelit tree with twinkle or whatevver that system is

#

looks neat

night zodiac
#

I bought some 7.5 foot bullshit

clear ferry
#

Twinkly was the name

#

Integrated in HA

forest edge
#

thats it

#

they had the bottom half of what looked like santa that clips onto the tree core and would movve it's legs and looked like he flew into the tree. was kind of funny
